Quality finishes

Among the wide variety of finishing materials for ceilings, polystyrene tiles are quite common due to their low cost and ease of installation. Moreover, the surface to be glued does not need careful preliminary preparation. It can hide many irregularities and defects. It is attached to the ceiling with glue.

How to glue with your own hands, and what glue to glue ceiling tilesto make it nice and cozy in the house?

Types of products

Several types

For finishing the ceiling, manufacturers offer several types. They vary in quality, strength and cost.

It:

  • Stamped - simple view. The manufacturer presses polystyrene granules under low pressure. The quality of the material does not stand out among others, which determines the lowest price on the market. The material is fragile, and its front side is decorated with a three-dimensional pattern.

  • - higher quality than stamped. It is stronger and denser. in various shades water-based paint.

Extruded

  • - durable, long service life, moisture resistant. It can be washed and cleaned. On the front side, it is most often laminated, so it can be used in bathrooms, kitchens and bathrooms.

Any kind is produced by the manufacturer in dimensions 50 * 50 cm. Thickness may vary. In addition to the tiles, skirting boards and rosettes are available for complete renovations.

Advice! For dry rooms, a simple foam is suitable. And for rooms with high humidity, choose laminated tiles that are easy to wash and clean. It does not require additional coloring, as it is sold in different colors... For this material, glue for the ceiling master is suitable.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the product

So:

  • It's easy to work with her... No complicated tools and fixtures required.
  • The coating can faithfully simulate plaster molding, or other materials, if we are talking about laminated models.

  • If you have, then glued tiles will only slightly reduce the height, as opposed to hanging.
  • Has high sound and thermal insulation, which allows you to make your home comfortable.
  • The material is not harmful to health, which allows the use for decoration in rooms for children and allergy sufferers of varying degrees.
  • A large assortment.

  • Variety of patterns, plus for finishing you can choose various options according to their financial capabilities.
  • The ability to lay on any surface.

Ceiling tiles have only two drawbacks. Cheap material burns perfectly, and high-quality compounds only melt - in both cases, toxic substances are released. The second drawback is complete vapor permeability.

Preparatory activities

Before gluing the tiles, you need to prepare the material and tools for work. We just need: a sharp knife, ruler, tape measure, clean rags, optionally - a glue gun.

  • Tiles should be bought from the same batch, because they can differ from each other, and the difference in parameters by a couple of millimeters already leads to a gap in the seams.
  • Since the material has standard sizes, then it is quite simple to calculate how much it is required. We measure the length and width of the room with a tape measure. We multiply these values and divide by the area of one tile, which is exactly a quarter of a square meter.
  • You need to buy with a small margin, making calculations for pruning. In order to give the renovation a complete look, purchase plinths and sockets for chandeliers.
  • Choosing an adhesive composition. Everyone decides the best glue for himself, but we will look at them in the next chapter.

Advice! When cutting the tiles to length, first measure the dimensions you want and transfer them to the material, taking into account the orientation of the pattern. Place the tiles on the table with the wrong side up, cut the required pieces along the marked lines.

Which glue to choose

Before gluing the ceiling tiles, you must remove the dust, otherwise there is a high probability of peeling off.

The adhesive for these purposes must meet the following requirements:

  • It must be highly adhesive. Since it is glued to the ceiling, and not to the floor, it is necessary for the glue to set quickly.
  • Be viscous, because the tiles cannot stick to the ceiling with liquid glue. And also it will drip from the ceiling.
  • Better if the glue is transparent or white... In this case, the joints will be invisible.
  • In the process of gluing tiles, it is required to connect surfaces of different properties. Therefore, the adhesive must be suitable for any gluing. different materials (glass, wood, concrete, drywall).
  • The glue should not contain any solvent. When it hits the tile, it deforms.

Adhesive options:

  • Universal adhesive. The composition contains polymer components, with the help of which various materials are glued. Its consumption is small. Universal adhesives have bad smelltherefore the room should be ventilated. They have good toughness and this allows for quick tiling. This type includes glue Master, Titanium, Montage and others. Instructions on how to use it are on the packaging.

  • Polyvinyl acetate compounds. These include PVA glue and bustilate. They do not have a strong odor, which makes them different from universal ones. The tile is easily glued to them, but the consumption is much higher. For a strong fixation, both surfaces are completely coated with glue. After that, press the tiles to the ceiling and wait for the glue to set. In terms of time, laying tiles with PVA takes longer than with universal glue.

  • Liquid Nails. The best adhesive for ceiling tiles. Convenient and reliable glue. It can be used to seal joints, seams and cracks. For gluing, it is better to use a gun, which will facilitate the work. In the process of gluing, it is applied pointwise in the center and in the corners. Bonds tiles reliably, even on uneven surfaces. It is used less often in work, this is a great expense, so the cost of repairs increases.

  • Acrylic putty - suitable for gluing any tile, including for fixing skirting boards. It is applied in a thin layer. Then you need to press it against the surface and wait until the element is fixed. This is how beautiful, even seams are obtained.
  • Instant glue. It is called that - Moment, for a very quick grasping. This is convenient if your hand is full and you can immediately set the cover elements in the desired position. But the price of the Moment is higher than that of other adhesives.

Preparing the surface for work

In order for the repair to take place with ease and without damage to the material, a small preparatory process should be carried out.

Remove old tiles before gluing. If the ceiling is whitewashed, then everything must be washed off. Remove peeling plaster layer. Re-plaster and dry large chips. If the ceiling was covered with wallpaper, then they should be removed, and the surface should be cleaned of glue. After cleaning the entire surface, prime and dry.

After the preparatory work done, you can start pasting.

Installation

There are several options for stickers, but for those who are doing this for the first time, it will be easier to install it parallel to the walls.

Start laying the first tiles from the center of the ceiling or from where the chandelier is. Cut the hole for it with a clerical knife. You do not need to worry about the evenness of the edges, since in the future this place will be closed with a socket.

  • At the same time, it is important to stick the first rows evenly, because the distortions cannot be eliminated. If, nevertheless, the rows go crooked, you will have to tear off the tiles and stick a new one, which will lead to additional costs. In order to avoid this, make markings on the ceiling. Draw several lines that you will be guided by when working.

Titanium glue

  • Apply the glue pointwise along the edges, center and diagonally. Try not to miss corners.
  • After applying the glue, you need to wait a few minutes and then press the product against the ceiling. In the case of installation on liquid nails, it can be glued immediately after application.
  • Since the material is quite fragile, you do not need to make great efforts, otherwise dents will remain or it will break and deteriorate appearance.

  • All other products are laid in even, parallel rows. Leave a minimum gap between them. Remove excess adhesive immediately with a damp sponge. If seams appear in the process, they can be repaired with acrylic sealant or putty.

For the snake in the center, mark a point, and from it draw two diagonally crossing lines. The first tile will be angled to the center.

The rest of the tiles in a spiral in two colors are glued around it. The chess arrangement also starts from the center. But the tiles are arranged, alternating colors, parallel to each other.

What kind of glue is better to glue, see above.

Advice! In order for the appearance of the ceiling to be beautiful and to serve you for a long time, you should not skimp on the quality of the material. Choose a reliable and high quality adhesive. Polyfoam is a fragile material and when choosing products of poor quality, it will quickly become unusable.

In the photo - installation of ceiling plinths

  • After the entire ceiling is covered with products, install the skirting boards. They, firstly, will hide defects between the wall and ceiling, and secondly, they will add coziness and give a complete look to the room.
  • Now the glue should be allowed to dry. After two to three days, apply a primer to the ceiling and baseboards, let it dry again and now you can paint the surface in any color you want.
  • In this case, it is better to use water-dispersion paint. If you have used laminated tiles, no surface painting is required.

After you have learned the whole process of gluing, and what to glue the ceiling tile on, now you can easily do it yourself. It is only necessary to observe accuracy in work. For a more complete picture, watch the video.

Ceiling cladding with foam plates - cheap way renovate the surface of the ceiling and give it a beautiful appearance. The richness of patterns and patterns and colors allow you to choose the best option that suits you.

What you need to consider when choosing a material and how to properly glue the ceiling tiles, you will learn by reading the material to the end.

Types of foam materials

There are three types of tiles to consider when choosing. They have different textures and differ not only in price, but also in surface quality.

Extruded

It is made of expanded polystyrene, characterized by high density and strength. There is a large selection, including in terms of color, imitation wood or marble. So even so cheap facing material can look rich and interesting.

It makes no sense to paint such plates additionally, besides, the surface does not absorb paint for a reason high density... The paint just rolls off. The thickness is only 2-3 mm.

Foam

Large porosity, graininess is visible and looser in appearance. Strength is achieved through a thickness of 6-12 mm. A relief pattern is applied to the foam sheet under pressure. The low price is the advantage of the material, which determines its popularity.

Injection

It has a clear pattern, there is a wide selection. It is baked in a special form, that is, you can choose an interesting relief. Good value for money makes injection material a popular cladding.

What is considered when choosing?

  • Correct product geometry. Make sure all corners are 90 degrees, there is no sag at the edges and the pattern is clearly visible. Remember: the stingy pays twice, so don't try to save money on this cheap cladding option.
  • The material from which the plate is made. It should not break under its own weight. If you took it around the corner, then the stove should not crack in your hands. Increased porosity and fragility - negative properties future cladding. It will be difficult to work with it, besides, the cladding will not last long.
  • Higher quality is considered to be those products for which the grain size is smaller, because it has a higher density and, therefore, strength.

How to calculate how much you need?

  • Measure the ceiling area. To do this, the width of the room must be multiplied by the length, so you get the number square metersto be veneered.
  • Decide on the format of the tiles, the most commonly used size is 50x50. You can see which size is right for you to avoid a lot of unnecessary trimming.
  • Material is always taken with a small margin for trimming and in cases of defective fragments or force majeure. Take 10% more.
  • If you want to combine two or more shades or textures of foam boards, you can calculate how many tiles you need per piece. Draw a styling diagram on paper and you will know how many shades you need.

Choosing glue

  1. There are special adhesives for working with foam ceiling tiles. They are sold in small mastic buckets. A practical and economical option with low consumption. In addition, installation is simplified, and the foam quickly adheres to the base.
  2. Also popular are "liquid nails", superglue "Moment", as well as "Titan" and "Econaset". When using "liquid nails", be prepared for the fact that you will need to stand with outstretched hands for several minutes and hold the plates so that they are firmly attached and fixed in the correct position. Moment is seized the fastest.
  3. If the ceiling is uneven and there are drops of more than a centimeter, a plaster screed is certainly required. Buy a plaster-based filler, such as Perfilks glue. The installation of the foam will be carried out on a small layer of putty.

Foundation preparation

How to glue tiles to the ceiling? Where to begin? Before starting work, you need to prepare the ceiling, which determines the durable ceiling cladding and ease of installation.

If there is a thick layer of whitewash on the ceiling, it is better to remove it. Foam plates weigh a little, but if the whitewash itself does not hold well, then over time everything can fall off. You can clean off the whitewash layer with a small spatula or a brush, after wetting the surface with water.

The surface that will be faced with polystyrene foam boards should be relatively flat, clean and primed. It is imperative to prime in order to improve adhesion and additionally strengthen the base if it is loose. In this case, deep penetration primers are suitable.

If the whitewash holds well, you can prime it with a deep penetrating primer to strengthen the base. After that, you can install the tiles on the old whitewash, which will save time.

Layout and choice of the method of placing tiles on the ceiling

The most common options for gluing ceiling tiles are in rows or diagonally. Sticking parallel to the walls is faster, creating a beautiful and correct geometry.

The right tips: how to properly glue the ceiling tiles without seams - video

The diagonal sticker requires more trimming, but the seams are more difficult to see, and the pattern is intricate and interesting.

How to make markup:

  1. We need to find the center of the room. To do this, take the diagonally opposite corners and hit the line. Then repeat the procedure with another pair of angles. The intersection point of the corners will be the center of the room. If you plan to mount the slabs diagonally, then you already have guide lines. If you need lines for installation in rows, beat a line between opposite walls through the center of the room.
  2. Often the slabs start from the chandelier. The corners of the slabs are cut to make room for the wire, then the cut will hide the chandelier holder.
  3. How to make the markup is clearly shown in the photo below.

You can choose not only plain tiles for the entire ceiling, but also combine several colors. Among the combined options are popular:

  • chess order;
  • snake;
  • alternating or intersecting diagonals;
  • darker shades of tiles are used around the perimeter of the ceiling.

It should be noted that styling combined option is no different from installing plain tiles. It takes only a little attention so as not to confuse anything, and also to pre-calculate how many tiles will be needed.

How to glue boards

Ceiling tiling is possible in two main ways. It all depends on the surface, on how smooth it is. Such a ceiling lining is designed to hide surface defects cheap and cheerful.

About the types of marriage or what to look for when buying - video

Often, foam lining is considered as a temporary measure, and then you can easily remove it and make it more expensive and more beautiful. stretch ceiling, eg. The fastening method depends on the differences.

On a flat surface

In this case, adhesives for foam or expanded polystyrene plates, we wrote more about possible materials for gluing above.

The technology of how to glue ceiling tiles with your own hands is as follows:

  • The adhesive is applied along the perimeter of the board and diagonally. A thin layer is enough, no bloopers are needed, no need to apply glue to the entire surface.
  • The tile is mounted in the desired place, after which it must be held for several minutes until the glue "seizes". Depending on the glue you choose, you need to hold the tile from a few seconds to a minute or more.
  • We mount the next part of the cladding in the same way: we apply it to the desired place on the ceiling, and then hold it so that it is securely fixed. It is necessary to ensure that the drawings match. As a result, you should get a whole picture, so make sure that there are no gaps and a gap between the tiles, and the drawing matches.
  • If you need to trim, use a pencil and a paint knife for this. Use a pencil to mark the dimensions to cut to. Do not cut by weight, but lay the tiles on a flat surface.

note

If it becomes necessary to touch up an already glued board, use a small wooden plank. Press it gently against the edge of the slab and try to move it to the desired distance. Do not do it with your hands, as foam materials are fragile and fragile, so you can easily break off a corner or the stove will crack.

On an uneven ceiling

It will not work to mount on liquid nails or foam glue on the ceiling that has visible irregularities. There will be too much consumption, and these materials are not intended to level uneven substrates.

In this case, you can use putty mixtures, which one depends on the magnitude of the differences. If they are within 5-7 mm, you can use a finishing putty, if more, use starting rough mixtures.

Video tips for pasting the ceiling with foam tiles with your own hands

How to glue ceiling tiles to uneven ceiling:

  • Dilute the putty to the consistency of sour cream.
  • Apply the solution to the ceiling, using a notched trowel, remove excess. A notched trowel will save glue consumption and minimize layer thickness. The solution is applied to the area of several fragments, after which styling begins.

    Do not apply too much solution at once, so that it is convenient to work with it, and it does not have time to set and dry.

  • Place the first tile on top of the mortar and press down to make sure it is fixed to the surface.
  • Align the edges of adjacent slabs so that there are no gaps, check that the pattern matches.
  • You can check the plane of the slab with a building level. With gentle movements, you can press the tiles that openly protrude. If this fails, remove the tiles and remove the excess putty underneath.

If the surface of the foam plates is embossed, then visually the differences will not be so noticeable. But still watch the joints and check the plane with a level.

The advantage of this fastening method is that the cladding immediately sticks, so that the tile does not need to be pressed and held, and then wait for it to fix.

note

Do not lay tiles on a layer of putty more than the maximum value, otherwise everything may collapse.

Grouting

Ceiling tiles are laid by applying glue or putty to the front surface of the facing. Remove any remnants of adhesive mixtures immediately, it will be much more difficult to remove dried adhesive.

The fresh mortar is removed with a fiber, sponge or soft cloth. Check the rag for lint and shedding beforehand. If it turns out that, despite your efforts, gaps have formed between the plates, they should be repaired.

For this, use any putty that may have remained, or a white acrylic sealant. Gently apply sealant into the joint and remove excess with a wet finger or sponge. Acrylic will mask cracks well, besides, it has excellent contact with the foam.

Outcome
Foam ceiling covering is an inexpensive but practical option if you need to improve the interior quickly and inexpensively. There are a lot of tips on how to glue tiles on the ceiling, we have given only a part of them, you have the right to choose interesting option and realize it on your own.

Ceiling tiles can be seen in many apartments and houses. She is the most affordable and simple finishing method. How to glue ceiling tiles, what kind of glue to do it - we will talk about this today.

What is this article about

What is ceiling tile

Ceiling tiles are a very common method for cladding ceilings in residential and public spaces, offices and retail outlets. Typically, polystyrene products are used for these purposes. They are available in square or rectangular shapes with 90 ° angles. Polystyrene (aka polystyrene) is very easy to install, it tolerates moisture well, and is environmentally friendly. Plates of this material can be smooth or with a relief pattern. On some examples, the front surface is finished with a film with the texture and color of the fabric, natural wood or stone. The edges of the tiles may have bevels.

Different models of products have different properties and require special care methods. Tiles with a film can be washed well with water, without a film they can be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner or a dry cloth. Expanded polystyrene products are available in several versions. They differ in manufacturing methods and appearance. Ceiling tiles can be:

  • pressed;
  • extruded;
  • injection.

Pressed tiles are made from block polystyrene. In its manufacture, the stamping method is used. The thickness of the finished product is 6-8 mm. Extruded ceiling materials are produced by pressing from polystyrene strips. They have a glossy smooth surface. The colors of the products imitate natural wood shades, marble and stone colors. Injection products are manufactured by sintering raw materials. They have a regular shape and a deep pattern on their surface. The thickness of such tiles is 9-14 mm.

In order for the gluing of the ceiling tile to occur efficiently and quickly, when buying material, you need to pay special attention to its size. The form must be absolutely correct. Any deviation from it is a product defect. It is impossible to glue tiles with defects correctly. There will certainly be gaps between separate elements, which will have to be covered up, and this will lead to additional costs and damage the aesthetic appearance of the ceiling. The individual grains of the material must be the same size. The smaller they are, the higher the quality. The edges of the tiles must not crumble. If you take a quality product by the corner and lift it, it shouldn't break. No cuts or dents are allowed on the surface of the drawing.

Calculation of the amount of material

How to stick the tiles to the ceiling correctly? To do this, you need to calculate them required amount... In a rectangular or square room, this is quite simple, more difficult in a room with an irregular ceiling. For calculations, you need to prepare:

  • paper;
  • pencil;
  • tape measure.

When performing calculations, you should remember this rule: we glue the ceiling tiles from the center of the ceiling to its edges. On paper, you need to outline the location of each tile. It should be borne in mind that the rows of material can also be located diagonally. The side of the tile is usually 50 cm. Sometimes other sizes can be found. It is quite easy to count the whole tiles. It is more difficult with trimming near the wall rows, especially when you have to combine the elements of the picture. In order not to make a mistake when buying, it is better to take the number of tiles 10 percent more than the norm. With the cheapness of the material, this will not be very noticeable.

Choosing an adhesive for the job

Many apartment and house owners believe that ceiling coverings can be mounted using any adhesive. It is possible to attach the tiles to the ceiling with good quality only with good glue. Facing products manufacturers have long developed special formulations for gluing various materials... There is an adhesive composition for different types of polystyrene ceiling products. What kind of glue to glue the ceiling tile, how to choose it correctly? To choose, you need to know some indicators:

  • the adhesive should fix the finishing material with the base so that later you do not have to redo the work;
  • the tile should stick quickly;
  • the consumption of glue should be quite reasonable: the higher the adhesion, the lower the consumption;
  • the adhesive must be well applied in both very thin and thick layers.

There is a tile adhesive with minimal consumption. It is based on liquid rubber... Any adhesive should be applied to the surface of the facing material and dried slightly. Many people use the following formulations:

  • Eco-Set;
  • "Titanium";
  • "Moment";
  • "Liquid Nails".

These compounds adhere the tiles to the ceiling well and quickly. It just needs to be pressed and held for a few seconds. The glued tile material adheres very firmly. "Eco-set" and "Titan" adhere well to tiles made of PVC and other materials, but dry for a very long time. Better to use the domestic "Moment". It dries up in a few seconds. The same can be said about Liquid Nails glue.

How to properly glue the ceiling tiles? The surface of the ceiling must be prepared. The quality and speed of cladding installation depends on the quality of preparation. The old coating must be completely cleaned off. If the ceiling was covered with wallpaper, it must be removed without fail. From a surface covered with lime, its layer must be completely washed off. You can only leave a layer of paint if it does not peel off. If the paint cracks, it is also removed completely with a spatula. The ceiling has been cleaned. Now it needs to be primed. It is better to use a deep penetration primer for this operation. The primed surface dries for at least a day. You cannot work at this time.

The dried ceiling should be carefully examined again. If you find dark spots, various recesses, then the ceiling should be plastered. After the putty has dried, apply another layer of primer and dry again. A day after that, they begin to install the tiles.

Bonding tiles

How to glue tiles to the ceiling? First, let's prepare the required tool:

  • roulette;
  • building level;
  • pencil;
  • painting cord;
  • sharp knife;
  • ruler;
  • high table;
  • brush;
  • putty knife;
  • glue.

The tools are ready. How to glue ceiling tiles with your own hands? It is necessary to make markings on the prepared surface of the ceiling. Laying is usually done from the center. To determine it, you need to stretch the cord from corner to corner diagonally. The intersection of the two cords will be the center of the room. There is often a chandelier hanging in this place. If so, then the corners of the tiles need to be cut off a little. This place will later be closed with a figured glass, which is found on each chandelier. 4 elements are greased with glue and applied alternately to the ceiling. Then other tiles are attached to them. They will have to be cut at the wall. This is done with a sharp knife along a ruler. The cut piece of tile is placed against the wall.

You can glue the tiles to the ceiling in another way. Work begins from the wall opposite the door. Glue is applied to several sheets of material and kept for some time. This time is indicated on the package. Then the tiles are glued one after another to the base. Ceiling skirting boards are attached last.

Other mounting methods

How to glue ceiling tiles in other ways? You can combine colors. The most common options: intersecting or parallel diagonals of different colors, a snake, gluing panels of different colors in the center of the ceiling or along its perimeter, gluing the ceiling with dark and light tiles in a checkerboard pattern.

How to glue a foam ceiling tile? You can glue it directly onto the whitewash:

  • on the primer;
  • over a partially scraped ceiling.

The old whitewash on the ceiling is primed. It adheres well to the base. After it has completely dried, the foam tile should be glued. You can partially scrape off the whitewash with a spatula. Then apply a layer of glue to the product and glue the tile, holding it with your hands for several minutes.

Conclusion on the topic

Renovating ceiling coverings is difficult. You can use different cladding materials: suspended and tension structures, panels of mirror panels different shapes... But the most common finishing material is foam ceiling tiles, how to glue and different ways of placing it on the ceiling were discussed above. The matter of choosing each individual owner is how to glue the ceiling tiles. This business also depends on the financial capabilities of the family. The tiled ceiling in the apartment is a decoration of the house. Ceiling tiles can only be properly glued onto a specially prepared base. Styrofoam tiles only adhere well on a flat surface.

How to glue ceiling tiles - this question worries many. It is a very lightweight material that does not weigh down the ceiling structure. When to glue the tiles to the ceiling: before wallpapering the walls or after? This is also a challenge for many. The glued ceiling will not do any damage to the walls. Therefore, it is better to start repairs with it. We also learned how to properly glue the ceiling tiles and what kind of glue to use. It remains to prepare tools, materials and start repairs. After installing the tiles, you will not have any questions about how to glue the tiles to the ceiling. A white sealant can be used to seal the joints if the tiles are white. And the main thing is that you can do everything yourself.

Expanded polystyrene tiles are one of the most popular types of ceiling coverings. Therefore, the question of how to glue ceiling tiles is of interest to many novice craftsmen planning to do their own finishing work.

How to choose a tile for ceiling decoration?

The great popularity of this decorative material due to its following advantages:

  • simple installation - everyone can handle gluing tiles;
  • easy care - foam tiles can be washed with any non-abrasive product;
  • the ability to hide small defects in the base;
  • fast finishing - a base that is small in size (for example, a ceiling in a bathroom) can be easily completed in a few hours;
  • low cost - prices for ceiling tiles are quite low, so everyone can afford such a finish.

For successful execution renovation works you need to answer 3 questions:

  • how to choose a facing material so that it will last for many years;
  • how to glue the selected finishing option so that it does not fall off;
  • how to glue ceiling tiles correctly so that the ceiling is not only reliable, but also attractive.

In the domestic market, ceiling tiles are presented in a wide range. Various models differ in color and texture, production technology, geometric dimensions, quality of expanded polystyrene and cost. Therefore, before gluing the tiles to the ceiling, you need to choose the right finishing material.

According to the production method, ceiling tiles are divided into 3 types:

  1. Injection. It has a low density and, accordingly, strength, therefore it costs less than other types of finishes. Its thickness is no more than 14 mm. Such a tile is made by sintering foamed foam, which is why it is called foam.
  2. Stamping. It is characterized by a denser structure and mechanical strength. The thickness of the product is 6-8 mm. It is made by pressing polystyrene foam at high temperatures.
  3. Extruded. It is the most expensive and highest quality tile. With a high density and strength, its thickness is about 3 mm, which during finishing allows you to save extra millimeters free space... During the production process, the tiles are covered with a laminated layer, which not only improves its appearance, but also protects against the harmful effects of moisture. This allows the material to be used in rooms with high humidity (bathroom, kitchen).

By choosing suitable type product, its color and pattern, you need to check the quality of the material and its geometric dimensions. The first step is to inspect the edges of the sheets - they must be dense and consist of small granules. The smaller the granules, the better. Then the strength of the material is checked. To do this, from the selected batch, you need to take one element by the edge and shake it a little. If at the same time it does not deform or break, then its quality is good.

Each tile must have the correct geometric dimensions. For example, if it is a square, then all the faces must be the same length, and the corners must be 90 °, that is, they must not be rounded or flattened. Only in this case can you finish the ceiling without seams.

Choosing an adhesive for ceiling tiles

When answering the question of how to glue the ceiling tile, one cannot ignore the glue, which is the link between the base and the finishing material. Ceiling lining adhesive must have the following properties:

  • strength and reliability;
  • fast setting;
  • good adhesion;
  • environmental safety;
  • the ability to lie down in both thin and thick layers.

If everything is more or less clear with the first four points, then the last one needs to stop a little for clarification. Most of the old-style apartments do not differ in flat ceilings, they can have height differences of more than 15 mm. How to finish in this case? There are two ways to get out of this situation: level the ceiling before facing or use glue that can be applied in a thick layer. The first option is not optimal, since it requires additional financial investments from the contractor. therefore the best option is the application of the adhesive in a thick layer, thereby simultaneously leveling and finishing the ceiling base.

Gluing tiles on a flat ceiling can be done using adhesives such as liquid nails, Moment, Eco-Set or Titan. They have excellent adhesion to any coating, be it plaster, wallpaper or other material, and a fast drying time, which greatly facilitates assembly work.

What to glue the foam tiles to the uneven ceiling? In this case the best option ordinary putty and glue for tiles or drywall is protruding. These compounds can be applied in layers of up to 40 mm, thereby leveling out even large differences in height.

Preparatory work

Any repair process begins with preparatory work... And finishing the ceiling with tiles in this regard is no exception. Before gluing this material, you must do the following:

  • choose a styling scheme;
  • calculate the required number of tiles;
  • prepare the ceiling for decoration.

There are different ways of placing tiles on the ceiling relative to the walls, the most popular are (Fig. 1):

  • rows;
  • staggered (offset);
  • diagonally.

Each installation option allows you to create a specific pattern that best suits a specific design idea.

To calculate the required quantity finishing material it is necessary to make drawings on a sheet of paper in a box in the selected scale, which indicate the dimensions of the room and the layout of the tiles. It should be borne in mind that the standard dimensions of the ceiling tiles are 50x50 cm. You can start laying from the center of the room or from the wall opposite to the window. If there is a chandelier in the center of the ceiling, then it is recommended to start finishing from it (Fig. 2).

After that, according to the drawing, the number of whole tiles and the number of elements that will be cut are counted. If there are gaps near the walls, the width of which will be less than the width of the tiles (less than 25 cm), then 1 element will go to cover two rows. If the size of the gaps is more than 25 cm, then the tile should be bought at the rate of 1 piece per 1 row.

How to glue the tile so that it does not fall off over time? To do this, it is necessary to properly prepare the finishing surface. First, the ceiling is cleaned of poorly adhered old finish and is treated with a deep penetration primer. If the base has deep cracks and chips, then they should additionally be repaired with putty. Before finishing, the ceiling made of chipboard or plywood is recommended to be primed with a special mixture with abrasive additives that increase the adhesion of the material. After the primer is dry, gluing can be done.

How to glue the ceiling beautifully? First you need to correctly outline the finishing base and mark its center. To do this, take two cords, which are pulled from opposite corners diagonally. The point of their intersection will be the center of the room. Then they retreat from this point by 25 cm (half of the tile) and draw lines along which the first element will be glued.

DIY tile gluing

Before gluing the tiles, you must prepare the following tools and materials:

  • stepladder;
  • a spatula if a drywall mixture or putty will be used as an adhesive;
  • roulette;
  • stationery knife;
  • assembly gun;
  • tiles;
  • adhesive composition;
  • white sealant.

How to apply the adhesive to the tiles depends on the composition to be used. If gluing will be done with putty or cement mix, then the glue is applied pointwise so as not to increase the weight of the finishing material. If it is planned to use "Titan", liquid nails or other similar composition, then it is applied along the entire perimeter of the tile 20-30 mm thick, and a small spot is made in the center.

After applying the glue, you need to leave the tile alone for a few minutes to allow the glue to dry a little. After that, the finishing material is applied to the ceiling according to the markings and pressed with uniform efforts over the entire area. Before installing each subsequent element, it is applied dry to its place in order to see how it lies and does not spoil the drawing. Tiles in the last row are trimmed with a utility knife on a hard surface if necessary. At the last stage finishing works the ceiling plinth is glued.

Before gluing the tiles, all windows and doors in the room must be closed in order to exclude drafts, because they negatively affect the strength of the bond.

If, for some reason, small gaps have formed in some places, then you should not be upset, since they can be sealed with white sealant. After the sealant has dried, it will need to be painted over.

There is nothing complicated about gluing ceiling tiles. The only thing that can cause difficulties is the marking of the ceiling, since it must be made as accurately as possible. If everything is done correctly, then the do-it-yourself ceiling will look no worse than if the installation work was carried out by a repair team.

One of the most economical ways to finish the ceiling is to glue the ceiling tiles. This process has a number of nuances, so it is important to study the basic rules for gluing tiles with your own hands, as well as how to install it.

Types of tiles

All models of ceiling tiles differ in their density, texture, and composition. Let's consider the main types.

Plastic

Plastic tiles are quite durable and of high quality, but they are far from being environmentally friendly. Such a ceiling is easy to care for: the plastic can be washed and cleaned different ways... It has the ability to fade, so this material is not suitable for rooms bathed in the sun.

Extruded

This material has a smooth surface without particularly convex relief elements. Typically, extruded boards are no more than 3 mm thick, although the material is dense. Manufacturers present models in different colors. Some of them imitate marble and wood.

It is not customary to paint extruded tilesbecause the paint does not adhere well to the surface. The stores offer a wide selection of models with different patterns in different colors. Extruded tiles are made from expanded polystyrene. It is easy to look after her. It does not create difficulties in the gluing process.

The only drawback of extruded tiles is their high price.

Foam

In another way, it is called stamped or PVC. It is looser in composition. The surface of such a tile is granular and porous.

The presence of a large number of pores on the surface makes it difficult to care for foam tiles. They become clogged with dirt, the color of the tiles fades. To avoid this problem, such material is often coated with paint. But water-based formulations are not suitable. It is advisable to use acrylic dispersion paints for painting such ceiling tiles.

Each plate is 6 to 8 mm thick, depending on the specific model. The pattern on it is extruded using the technology of a large press. This tile has a huge disadvantage: it is loose, quickly breaks down, deteriorates, shines through... It is difficult to cut it. Therefore, such models should be purchased with a margin. The big advantage of foam tiles is their low cost.

Injection

Such varieties are made from expanded polystyrene, which is baked in a certain shape, creating the desired pattern on the surface. Drawings are clearer than previous analogs, the texture is more interesting. This material has an average cost and quality. Manufacturers allow painting of this material. With the help of such a tile, you can make a completely seamless ceiling, so it is in demand.

The big advantage of such a composition is its fire resistance and environmental friendliness. Such material has good sound insulation and does not deteriorate from high humidity. However, it is always produced in white, so it is often painted with different compounds after installation.

Most types of ceiling tiles are produced in 50 by 50 cm squares. But there are also non-standard rectangular tile models.

By edge type

Exist different types ceiling tiles that differ in the type of edging. There are models:

  • with straight edges without a seam;
  • having clear edges between each slab;
  • with curved edges that look more interesting.

The different type of edge does not affect the gluing of the ceiling tiles, it only changes the appearance of the ceiling.

By drawing

Models are categorized by pattern type. There are interesting types of tiles with:

  • geometric print;
  • floristic ornament;
  • lace motives;
  • imitation of plaster stucco molding;
  • laconic lines.

A neutral option is a smooth tile without a pattern. From the wide selection presented by modern manufacturers for sale, you can choose an option for finishing the ceiling for every taste and budget.

Surface preparation

Before gluing the tiles, you must carefully prepare the surface of the ceiling. In order for the result of the work to please, and the tile to stay on the ceiling for a long time, it is necessary to follow a number of rules. The ceiling must be cleaned of old coatings. The whitewashed ceiling must be thoroughly washed off, the plastered layer, wallpaper and paint must be peeled off and removed. Depending on the type of coating, you can use a spatula or a hammer drill for this.

Then it is necessary to correct the defects that remain on the cleaned ceiling. More often cracks, bulges and depressions appear on it. To fix uneven ceiling, putty should be used. With this composition, you can grout defects. The putty is capable of correcting defects of any complexity.

After the putty has dried (after about 12 hours), you need to start priming the ceiling. It is better to apply the primer in several layers, observing a certain time interval so that each layer is completely dry. The primer will improve the adhesion of the tile to the ceiling surface and make such a coating more reliable.... It will make the overlap uniform due to the penetrating ability.

An exclusive option for surface preparation is when the whitewash is in good condition and is firmly attached to the ceiling. In this case, the ceiling is not cleaned of whitewash, but immediately primed. However, it is worth considering: on such a basis, the tiled covering will not be able to hold on for a long time, over time it will go away, it may deform. This solution should only be used if you need urgent cosmetic repairs.

Surface preparation with a primer is different depending on the type of ceiling:

  • For concrete ceiling should apply special composition called concrete contact.
  • It is better to treat a gypsum ceiling with a deep penetration agent.
  • If the room is damp, it is worth treating the surface of the base with an antiseptic primer to prevent the appearance of an environment for microorganisms.

If the ceiling is loose and loose, it must be primed. After the preparatory composition is absorbed, you can proceed to gluing the tiles.

Adhesive selection

For gluing, standard types of glue are usually used (Titanium, Moment or Naset). These formulations are fairly common and average cost. However, some of them create difficulties in the gluing process. For example, after applying the glue, the tiles must be pressed against the ceiling for 5 to 10 seconds and fully supported.

The fastest action of these compounds is possessed by the Moment glue... It grabs in about 3 seconds. Before gluing the ceiling tiles with it, it is necessary to keep the composition in air for a certain time. After that, the fragment should be firmly pressed to the base. Ceiling tiles are often glued liquid nails... They are able to fix coatings well, they are also used for the reconstruction of ceilings.

For gluing ceiling tiles often use special mastic... It is sold in buckets and has a pasty texture. Such glue is much easier to use because it is flexible: each element of the coating is immediately fixed to the ceiling, it does not need to be held for a long time. Mastic and tile adhesive are used only for ceilings with a flat surface.

If there are defects or irregularities on the ceiling, a gypsum-based putty is used for pasting. Besides her you can stick coatings on an uneven ceiling using a compound called Knauf... It is suitable for a drop of 5 mm. For large defects, the ceiling should be leveled initially.

Sticking schemes

There are several common options for installing tiles on the ceiling.

Classic scheme

It involves placing tiles in rows tightly to each other along the walls. The gluing starts from the central part. This solution is used when seamless ceiling tiles are used. By gluing the tiles according to the classical scheme, you can create an integral surface.

The classic styling has a second interpretation. In the process of gluing, the tiles are applied with a shift so that each row is half the slab ahead of the previous one. This makes the ceilings lighter and more airy.

It is better to choose the types of gluing depending on the height of the ceiling in a particular room.

Diagonally (obliquely)

This is the most common option, it is universal, as it is suitable for any size of premises. For laying tiles in this way, markings are made in advance along diagonal lines so that the tiles go along them. but diagonal gluing involves a large consumption of finishing material... You will have a lot of scraps left.

Visually, placing the tiles diagonally (with a diamond) looks more presentable. The seams are practically invisible with this installation.... Placing tiles diagonally must start from the chandelier. It is important to control the correct laying in such a way that all slabs follow strictly along the lines.

Diagonals can be drawn using threads, marking them using them.

There are a number of rules that must be followed in order to properly tile the ceiling diagonally:

  • The first element must be positioned so that it is at a 45 degree angle from each wall of the room.
  • Then, the following tile elements must be attached to the central element.
  • After that, all subsequent elements should be evenly joined until the entire surface of the ceiling is covered with tiles.

If you follow these rules, you can create an elegant and interesting styling.

Staggered

In order to finish the ceiling in this way, it is necessary to purchase materials of two different shades... Usually they choose contrasting color solutions... Sticking occurs from the center of the ceiling. In this case, the edges of the tiles are parallel to the side walls. The gluing takes place by the alternation method. This creates a checkerboard effect on the ceiling.

The advantage of this type of gluing is the fact that it is able to hide the unevenness of the base.

Snake styling

This styling scheme is a combination of two shades. Colors can be contrasting and similar. Gluing is carried out starting from the center of the room in such a way as to obtain an image of a snake of a graphic type. Usually they try to simplify this process by acquiring a single-color tile, and only then after installation they paint it with water-based paint in different colors.

Calculation of the amount of materials

Calculating the amount of material that will be spent on finishing the ceiling is quite simple. Find out the surface area of the ceiling. If the room is rectangular, you can multiply the length by the width of the room by measuring the walls with a tape measure. When the room has non-standard outlines, it is necessary to measure all the walls separately.

It is desirable to display them on the plan as a picture. After that, the resulting drawing must be divided into rectangles and squares and the area of each figure must be calculated to scale. Then you need to add the dimensions of the area of all the resulting elements. This will give you the surface area of the entire ceiling in a custom room.

If you prefer standard 50 x 50 cm tiles for decoration, the area of such a product will be 1/4 sq. m. Accordingly, four tiles will cover 1 sq. m. m. ceiling. To simplify calculations, you can divide the total ceiling area by the area of the ceiling tiles. As a result, you will receive the amount of material required for gluing.

Now manufacturers present models, the size of which varies: 40 x 40, 60 x 60, 30 x 70 cm and 30 x 60 cm.In this case, calculations should be approached with greater seriousness, calculating the area of \\ u200b \\ u200bthe tiles for buying the required number of packages. Even after making calculations, tiles must be purchased with a marginenough to cover the entire ceiling and trim. This is especially true when you plan to arrange it not according to the classical scheme.

Do not forget that during the gluing process, it may break or deteriorate. You need to buy about 10% more tilesthan you calculated.

Pasting process

The easiest way is to paste over flat ceilings. For this type of surface, foam or polystyrene tiles are perfect. First you need to spread glue on the tile surface. A certain technology must be observed: glue is applied along the perimeter of the tile and diagonally. The entire surface of the tile should not be covered with glue.

Before gluing, draw the markings to make it easier to place the tiles on the ceiling... Then the tile must be attached to the place designated for it. After applying the tile, you need to smooth it over the entire surface with light hand movements. Then you need to wait a few seconds. The exact time depends on the type of adhesive selected.

Further gluing is simplified. Each subsequent tile must be attached clearly to the edge of the element already fixed to the ceiling. If there are patterns on the surface of the slab, they must be combined and docked correctly... First you need to adjust the pattern, and only then glue the rest of the plate. The docking should be perfectly flat.

The surfaces must be completely flat against each other, otherwise the ceiling will be uneven. Each edge must be aligned with an accuracy of 1 mm, otherwise, even because of such a slight unevenness, all coatings will move, the ceiling will look bad, there will be gaps. This procedure must be repeated with all tiles. When you get to the walls, you need to trim the outer elements. Before trimming, it is better to try on and draw markings on the plate. You need to cut the tiles evenly so that a gap does not form between the extreme tile and the side wall.

Minimum wall gap can be hidden ceiling plinth... If, in the process of gluing the tiles, you notice that 1 square is not very flat against the other, there is a small gap between them, you must carefully move these elements. For this, it is better to use a wooden plank. It must be firmly pressed against the free edge of the tile and moved smoothly (with pressure), removing the gap. If you start moving the tiles with your hands, you will simply break the cover.

After finishing the installation process, you can proceed to painting the tiles, if necessary. The easiest way to cover this material with water-based paint on an acrylic basis... In order to qualitatively smear the tiles with paint without gaps, you need to work with a foam roller.

The paintwork should be applied in 2 or 3 layers, depending on the desired shade saturation. In order for the paint to lay down smoothly and efficiently, you need to apply a layer of primer to the tile surface.

Putty joints

In the process of gluing, not everyone manages to properly form the seams between the elements of ceiling coverings the first time. Often a gap can be seen between them. If small gaps have been formed during the work, after laying the tiles, they can be covered with white acrylic sealant. It must be carefully squeezed into the slots so that it fills them. After that, you need to get rid of the excess glue.

The sealant is sold in the form of cans with an extended nozzle. So the composition can be squeezed out exactly where it is needed without any problems. The thin tube easily penetrates even the thinnest cracks. To seal the joints with sealant, you must use a gun. The sealant must be distributed evenly so as not to stain the surface. This tool will not only cover the seams, but also fix the covering on the ceiling.

Some masters assure that gluing tiles to whitewash is unacceptable. They indicate that the lime layer quickly peels off along with the tiles after a while. They advise getting rid of the chalk before sticking. During the gluing process, it is usually difficult to cover the ceiling along the edge of the walls. It is important to ensure that the outer rows have the same size and run strictly parallel to the walls when it comes to classic styling.

In order for the tile to always look beautiful, it is necessary to properly care for it. Tiled ceilings (especially embossed ones) accumulate a lot of dust. The surface darkens and loses its former gloss. therefore it is necessary to carry out dry cleaning at least once a month with a vacuum cleaner or soft brush.

Wet mopping should be done every two months with a mop. To clean such a ceiling, only the most gentle detergents... A mild soap solution is ideal for this. At the end wet cleaning the ceiling must be wiped with a dry cloth to remove moisture and streaks.
