Since then, the hanging chair has become not only one of the whims of interior fashion from the pages of glossy magazines, but also a comfortable component. living rooms, bedrooms and children's rooms in simple apartments.

Types of hanging chairs

For more than half a century of its existence, the hanging chair has undergone many metamorphoses and "reincarnations", and for given time there are already several types of this piece of furniture.

  • With a rigid frame - such chairs are made of rattan, acrylic, plastic base covered with durable fabric. Vine can also be used as a material for making a rigid frame of the chair.
  • With a soft frame - this type of chair resembles an ordinary hammock. Its main difference is size. The suspended frameless chair is much smaller than a hammock and takes up little space. When used, it takes the shape of the human body, that is, you can just sit in it or take a horizontal position.
  • Hanging cocoon chairs. Their peculiarity is that the inner space is 2/3 hidden from prying eyes with the help of wicker walls. Such a resting place will appeal to those who are a fan of solitude.
  • The Kaplya chair is usually installed in children's rooms. Outwardly it looks like houseand some models even have doors.

In addition, hanging chairs are divided into types and according to other criteria - the type of attachment (axial and rod), the material used and the load. Before choosing a chair, you need to decide where and how it will be used, and what intensity of load is expected on it.

Advantages and disadvantages of hanging chairs

Like everything that surrounds us, hanging chairs have their pros and cons. Their advantages include originality, uniqueness, if the chair is made by hand, in a single copy. But their main advantage is, of course, comfort. Where, if not in a hanging chair, can you remember your childhood, calm down the nerves that were shattered during the day?

The disadvantages of such a piece of furniture are the difficulty in moving, because it is quite difficult to install or dismantle a hanging chair. In addition, if you move the chair to another place, then on ceiling there will be traces of the previous fastening.

Types of hanging chairs

A wide variety of models and designs are produced. They can be made from wood, metal, rattan, vine, transparent plastic. There are models that you can make yourself without any problems.

  1. Swing chair. The attachment is carried out at two points. Due to this, the structure swings in one plane. There are soft models (hammock chair) or on a rigid frame:
    • the basis of the first version is a soft fabric or wicker fabric, which is easy to sew, weave using macrame technique or crochet - the ends of the cloth are attached to the transverse bar with 4 slings, and it is already suspended from the ceiling or leg-post;

Finishing techniques and materials

Such chairs usually have a rigid frame and a seat made of various materials.

  1. The cloth. An affordable and easy-to-use material, the density and strength of which is selected based on the expected load. A raincoat, tarpaulin will do. The chair for children from old jeans with pockets and rivets looks original.
  2. Knitted fabric. Craftsmen who know the knitting or crocheting technique can use their skills to create an original chair from plain or multi-colored threads.
  3. Macrame. Weaving from a durable cord will not only last a long time, but also add a special flavor to any interior.
  4. Vine, rattan. Chairs made from sustainable materials will decorate any interior, but special skills are required to work with them. In addition, rattan does not grow in our country.

It is interesting! An unusual and very durable material for the armchair braid - a thread from plastic bottles... Such a chair will not get wet, will not deform, it can be hung on the street.

Frame material

The base of the chair can be made from different materials.

  1. Gymnastic hoop. Suitable only for a child seat, for an adult its strength is not enough, since the cross-sectional diameter is 16 mm, and for the frame of the chair you need 2 times more.
  2. Metal pipe. The product from it will turn out to be durable, but heavy - at least 7 kg. For its manufacture, you will need pipe bending equipment.
  3. Tree. The design will be durable, lightweight, environmentally friendly. Since the material absorbs moisture and dries up in the sun, wood for outdoor chairs must be treated with impregnations. This will protect the material from decay.
  4. Reinforced-plastic pipes. Strong, lightweight and non-corrosive material. When using coiled pipes, there is no need to bend them. The ends of the segment are connected with a wooden or plastic insert and fixed with self-tapping screws.

You should not use old material in the manufacture of an armchair: such furniture will not last long.

To make it you will need:

  • a hoop with a diameter of 90–95 cm;
  • durable fabric 3 m long and 1.5 m wide;
  • lightning - 90–95 cm;
  • strong cord or rope - 10 m;

How to make a wicker nest chair: step by step photos

By making the seat flat and providing the structure with sides, you can get a nest chair. For such a rocking chair you will need:

  • two hoops made of a metal-plastic pipe with a cross section of 35 mm: for a seat with a diameter of 70 cm, for a backrest - 110 cm;
  • polyamide cord 4 mm thick - 900 m;
  • sling or strong rope - 12 m;
  • thicker cord for connecting the seat and backrest.

To make this chair, you need to be able to weave.

  1. First, braid both hoops:
    • wrap the pipe with a cord (it is worth taking a cord with a polypropylene core, as it will help to make a stronger knit);
    • pull the thread well (each next turn should fit evenly and tightly to the previous one);
    • fasten the thread every 20 turns, pulling it as much as possible and twisting it;
    • for greater strength, coat the weaving with glue.
  2. At regular intervals, fasten with a double loop on the braid of the hoop the pieces of the cord folded in half. They should be half the length of the hoop.
  3. Weave the bottom of the chair with flat knots in a checkerboard pattern, securing the remaining ends to a free semicircle. The tension on the cords when weaving should be quite strong. It is not scary if the hoop is slightly deformed, in the future the shape will be restored.
  4. Connect the finished seat and backrest hoop by tying them to each other with a cord at the front of the structure.
  5. At the back, connect the seat and the backrest hoop with two wooden spacer bars, making cuts in their ends for a strong attachment. The length of the spacers is adjusted according to the desired backrest height.
  6. Attach the cords to the upper arch of the back and weave from top to bottom. Fasten the rest of the cords to the seat and form brushes out of them.
  7. Connect the upper arch of the backrest and the seat with a thick cord parallel to the struts, and then remove them.
  8. Tie the slings to the finished structure. They also need to be made using the macrame technique from cords.
  9. Hang the chair.

  • lightning;
  • pillow or inflatable balloon;
  • sewing accessories.

The technique of making a cocoon is simple, the main thing is to follow the instructions.

Fastening suspended rockers to the ceiling, rack, beam

For any suspended structures the main thing is a reliable fastening. The safety of those who use the chair depends on it. There are several mounting options:

  • to the ceiling;
  • to the leg stand;
  • to a tree branch or beam (for the street).

If there is a stretch ceiling in the room, then it will be problematic to install the mount. In this case, you need to mount the structure before fixing the ceiling, or you should purchase a special stand-leg.

Consider different installation options.

  1. A hole can be drilled in a concrete ceiling, a powerful anchor with a hook can be installed in it to suspend the structure. There are special kits on sale, consisting of anchor, hook and chain. The fasteners must be able to support at least 120 kg.
  2. The voids in the ceiling through the hole must be filled with a special solution of high strength polymers - chemical anchors. These formulations are sold in syringe tubes. Then you need to insert an anchor into the hole and wait a day until the composition is completely dry.
  3. For ceilings with sturdy joists or for terraces and outdoors, bolting is suitable.
  4. For a suspended ceiling, it is worth purchasing a special suspension that has a bracket that is attached to the concrete ceiling and exits through the suspended one. A hook is screwed to it.

    The mounting bracket is installed on concrete ceiling, then a hook is screwed to it

  5. The slings are tied to a tree branch with a strong knot.
  6. The leg stand can be purchased at the store. It is convenient because the chair is not permanently fixed in one place and it can be moved, and, if necessary, disassembled and transported.

Diy rack drawing

The simplest stand-leg for a hanging chair can really be made by yourself.

  1. The wooden rack consists of only 5 parts, but it cannot be made without special equipment, all the parts are bent.
  2. The most common option is a metal stand. To make it you will need metal pipe, pipe bending equipment and welding.
  3. A simple version of a metal rack: the design does not require complex drawings and special skills.

    For stability, a simple metal post is attached to the vertical support with a chain or cable

You don't have to spend a lot of money to fully relax. With a creative approach to business, relaxation will be not only relaxation in a hanging chair, but also the process of its manufacture. And the product will cause legitimate pride.

Such a hanging chair looks incredibly stylish, fashionable, as well as very organic and aesthetically pleasing, however, not all interiors are ready to accept such an unusual piece of furniture in their design. For instance, classic interiors will not tolerate such a presence, and all modern designs the premises opposite will only be happy with such a neighborhood.

Such chairs are capable of withstanding a serious load, for example, plastic, textile and wicker chairs can freely withstand a weight of 100 kg, and modern acrylic chairs can even withstand a weight of up to 200 kg.

What is a hanging chair for home.

At its core, a hanging chair is a swing with a voluminous and comfortable seat, on which you can recline and swing back and forth. This chair is made from a wide variety of materials: rattan, willow vine, textiles or plastic. It is called suspended because the seat-bed is suspended from the ceiling on cables, ropes or belts specially provided for this purpose. In addition, there are also portable designs of such chairs, which consist of a massive base equipped with a strong hook on which the chair is suspended; the advantage of this design is undoubtedly its certain mobility, for example, today the chair can stand in the house, and tomorrow it can be transported to garden. Many people ask themselves how much weight hanging chairs can withstand, in fact, such answers should be given by the manufacturer or seller of the product, but if we talk about average indicators, then this chair is able to withstand a person weighing 100 kg.

Who created the hanging chair.

The hanging chair owes its appearance to Nanna Diesel, a designer from Denmark, who in 1957, based on the well-known hammock, came up with a radically new solution for the interiors of houses, she created an egg-shaped chair and hung it with ropes on the ceiling beam. The idea of \u200b\u200ba hanging chair excited the world community, and there was literally a line for such chairs. Some time later, in 1968, another designer from Finland proposed a new design for such an armchair - in the form of a plastic ball.

Varieties of hanging chairs.

It would seem that such a chair can have varieties, in fact, they are of three main types:

  • Fixing only to the ceiling surface;
  • Mobile - equipped with a portable stand;
  • Strictly fixed - simultaneously attached to the ceiling and floor.

In addition, such chairs differ in the material of manufacture, there are:

  • With a plastic seat;
  • With textile seat;
  • With wicker seat.

Hanging chair for an apartment or house, what to look for before buying and installing.

  1. You should know that on average the depth of such a chair is 50 cm, chairs in the form of balls are usually deeper, about 70-80 cm, so you should choose a place for the chair where it will not interfere. This means that there should not be obstacles in front, behind and on the sides of it, in the form of furniture, fragile vases or stands with flowers, taking into account the possible degree of rocking the chairs.
  2. Such an armchair must necessarily fit into the style of the interior, so the wicker armchairs will best fit into stylized interiors such as African, Hawaiian and Tropical. Floral textiles will perfectly accentuate interiors Vintage and Shabby Chic, linen, cotton will suit Provence and Country styles. Acrylic chairs will accentuate the Hi-Tech or Art Deco style.
  3. Before buying, be sure to study the surface of the ceiling, because if there are stretch ceilings in your house, then you simply will not be able to attach such a chair to them. Ideally, it should be secured to a sturdy ceiling slab or large solid wood beam.
  4. If you want to purchase a two-seater armchair, then in this case we recommend that you still purchase two different armchairs and hang them side by side, then the load will be correctly and evenly distributed over the ceiling surface.

How to make a hanging chair yourself.

We take a straight stick, measure the length of half of the desired chair, drill seven holes in the stick at a distance of 7 cm from each other. We take a sheet of thick plywood, in the center we put a rail with drilled holes, in the center we fix it on the screw. Insert a pencil into the second hole from the center and draw a circle around a stick (like a compass), and do the same with the rest of the holes. When all the circles are drawn, cut out the rings with a jigsaw. We process each ring with sandpaper. Then in each ring we drill four holes with a drill, thread a tight rope through them and string plywood rings, tie a knot around each hole. We also drill four holes in the central circle of the seat, where we pass the ends of the rope and tie the knots. It remains to hang the structure on the ceiling and put a soft pillow in the chair.

Options

The frame can be made of materials of varying rigidity and when choosing a suitable model, this parameter should be taken into account, since it affects the convenience and service life of the product. A solid base with a rigid frame is reliable and durable, withstands significant loads.

It is made on the basis of artificial and natural materials and can be made of wood, lightweight types of metal, wicker, rattan or various types of plastic. After shaping the seat, it is covered with a soft cloth, placed inside the pillow, or other methods of creating a comfortable resting place are used.

The soft frame takes the shape of the body of a person sitting or lying in it, as if enveloping from all sides and creating a personal cozy house. Usually these are textile models. different sizes, shapes and colors, reminiscent of a hammock. Sometimes there is a modification based on an interwoven mesh, but this structure is more suitable for a summer vacation than for creating cozy interior in the apartment.

In the form of a cocoon, ball, egg or other variations on the theme of a spherical shape, a very interesting design and appearance an armchair that, in addition to being comfortable, provides protection from prying eyes and also gives a sense of privacy.

Models for the smallest family members can be of various shapes in the form of houses, cars, swings. Since children weigh very little, there are much more options for choosing material and creating original chairs.

Choice of model and location

When choosing any option for a unique designer chair or a typical production model, it is important to take into account some of the features of their use in the interior.

Suspended structures cannot be attached to stretch ceilings and other complex modifications, since it is impossible to reliably hang without reinforcement, and some ceiling materials do not provide for the device of additional fastening systems.

If the house is stretched or dropped ceilings, but you really want to arrange a hanging chair, then you can consider options on a rigid stand that do not require installation worksassociated with a solid ceiling mount device.

The armchair on the counter can be moved, carried and deployed at will, which is very convenient and practical, and also makes it possible to change the environment as you wish.

It is important to consider the volumes occupied by the hanging model of the hanging seat. A product that is too close to walls or furniture will be uncomfortable for everyday use.

For safety reasons, do not place near such a device glass vases or other fragile or breakable items.

Conventional designs are designed for a weight of up to 100 kg, so you should not try to settle in such a chair together, and you also need to take into account the individual characteristics of the body structure.

For a bedroom, installation of a floor or ceiling modification closer to the windows is suitable, this will allow rational use of the space of the room and create comfortable conditions for rest.

In the nursery, especially close attention must be paid to safety, since it is very easy for restless children to be injured if they are installed incorrectly or choose not the most suitable model.

In the reception room, such models look great in combination with bean bags, as well as in the style of minimalism and naturalism. Such seating will provide additional seating options and create a cozy living room.

Verandas, terraces, large balconies are ideal for wicker hanging chairs. Placing a fountain, pool, biofireplace or other decor item with an imitation of fire or water next to it will enhance the feeling of relaxation.

Mount

Usually, the installation of suspended structures is associated with installation work. Anchor bolts are placed in the ceiling, designed to support a sufficiently large weight and designed for high loads. Anchor manufacturers offer modifications with ready-made hooks for attaching hangers.

In the event that work with construction tool is not a common thing, it is better to entrust the installation to professionals with experience and all the necessary details. As in most cases of working with fasteners, you should not save on quality, the comfort and safety of use depends on it.

Childhood passes, and the desire to at least sometimes ride a swing and be in limbo does not leave. If at least sometimes you have such a desire, then do not suppress it, but get yourself a hanging chair and enjoy weightlessness and comfort every day. Don't believe that this is possible? Then we invite you to the virtual world of hanging furniture, where, together with the Dream House website, we will not only see the types of such chairs, but also decide how to use them in the interior.

What is a hanging chair

For the first time a hanging chair for home was created by a designer from Denmark in the middle of the last century. Despite its venerable age, it, as before, belongs to the category of designer furniture. However, recently it has been increasingly used to equip country houses and city apartments. Ergonomic design, modern materials and unusual shape make you choose a hanging chair.

What is it like? This is a comfortable bed, mostly wicker made of vine or rattan, or made of modern materials like acrylic or plastic, which is suspended from the ceiling by a hook. Thus, it turns out that you can swing in different directions in it, as in childhood on a swing. By the way, the second name of this unusual "flying" furniture is a suspended swing chair, which fully justifies its name.

Many are interested in the question of how much weight a seated person can withstand when suspended from the ceiling? This question should be asked directly to the seller, because depending on different models and materials, the indicator can vary - some chairs can withstand a person weighing up to 100 kg, while others can hold heavy weights up to 150 kg in their "arms".

Types of modern hanging chairs

Suspended chairs can vary in shape and material of manufacture, but, as a rule, they all allow you to sit and swing back and forth, left and right, and even diagonally. The only exception is one type of chair, which is attached not only at the top of the hook, but also fixed at the bottom. By analogy, this design is similar to the fastening of a punching bag, which is fixed to the floor and to the ceiling. As you can imagine, on such a chair you will not be able to swing from side to side, it will only allow you to rotate around its axis.

The frame of such a chair can also be of several options. The rattan and vine wicker hanging chair has a rigid body, as are the modern egg chairs made of clear plastic or acrylic. For ease of location, soft mattresses and are placed inside.

But there are more soft option Is a hanging hammock chair that looks like a real fabric hammock, only in smaller sizes.

Which one you prefer is up to you, but perhaps the most comfortable models are those that allow you to retire and abstract yourself from the outside fuss - these are cocoon chairs, closed on three sides by wicker walls and comfortably enveloping the person sitting inside.

There are even such wicker models that are made in the form of a drop with a small window designed only to get inside. And then you find yourself in your own separate world, full of comfort and enjoyment of solitude.

Hanging chairs on a frame or rack

As you already know, hanging chairs are suspended from the ceiling or from wooden beams, but there are also those that are fixed on a metal stand on the floor. These models are the most functional because:

  • firstly, they are mobile - such chairs can be carried and installed anywhere in the house and even on the street;
  • secondly, the frame itself can be detached from the rack and suspended from the ceiling.

In the second case, the hanging chair can be turned into the main accent of the room. For these purposes, an extraordinary model is suitable (for example, with an engraving and lED backlight) placed right in the middle of the room. In order not to be known as an individual farmer, opposite your bed, install another chair for your soul mate.

But let's go back to the backlit chair mentioned earlier. This original design masterpiece will allow you to relax with maximum comfort after a hard day. The drawing is applied to the surface of the ball based on your preference for individual orderwhether it will be funny openwork curls or a futuristic spider web is up to you. But besides this, even the color of the backlight can be chosen to your taste - depending on your mood, you can change the color of the glowing ball, for example, a soft green or light green color will relax and relieve tension, at the same time, if you are in high spirits, then red color will fit more.

Hanging chair for cottage and garden

Hanging chairs for the street can be attributed to a separate type. If the furniture installed indoors can be made of any material, then a chair made of materials resistant to natural disasters will be required for placement in an outdoor area. It has to withstand high humidity and the scorching sun.

A hanging chair for a summer residence or for open ones is better to choose from artificial rattan - unlike its natural counterpart, it withstands the influence of atmospheric phenomena better and, therefore, is more durable. But even such furniture must be removed from the street in winter time. The best place storage during unused period - this is an unheated room (but not a damp barn).

Whatever hanging chair you look after, the main thing is to choose it for the interior or exterior, so that in shape and size it fits well into the surrounding environment. But the most important thing is that a chair suspended from the ceiling or to the frame should be comfortable, so before buying, test it not only for strength, but also for comfort. Do not hesitate to settle in a cozy cocoon right in the store!
