Rain, wind, slush, you need to make a fire, dry out and warm up a little, but the lighter failed. It turned out to be of poor quality, the valve slowly released all the gas. Or it simply cannot cope with the wind and dampness, it goes out. For a way out of such situations, hunting matches are intended.

Materials and accessories

The match consists of a head, which is struck on a grater on a box, and straws, a thin wooden stick.

1. You will need regular matches. And quite a few, several boxes. We will extract from them a composition containing sulfur and berthollet salt. That is, to remove the heads.

2. Wood chips that will serve as straws for future products. Be sure to dry. They can be obtained, for example, by neatly splitting pencils lengthwise into quarters.

3. Knife, mortar, sheet of paper, some old cupfrom which no one drinks. And also a piece of plasticine. Or any other suitable tool with which you can perform the following actions.

Manufacturing

First, we clean the heads off the matches. That is, we separate the flammable composition from the straws. You can use a knife. Or whoever is more comfortable. You just need to collect a slide from this composition on a sheet of paper, trying to minimize the presence of wood shavings.

Then we pour the prey into a mortar and very carefully grind it into powder. Berthollet's salt detonates from excessive mechanical stress, so work should be really careful.

Is it done? Pour the powder into a cup. The one from which no one drinks for a long time and, most importantly, is not going to drink in the future. A glass will do. We arm ourselves with a stick and begin to add water to the powder, thoroughly stirring the composition.

You should end up with something viscous, like dense mud. We spread this mass on pre-prepared straws. On the very dry chips that you, of course, were careful not to cut when cutting.

Spread abundantly and at least half the length of the future match. The larger and more abundant, the higher the resistance to wind and moisture, the easier it is to light a fire. But that's later, but for now we move on.

Why do you need plasticine? In general, it doesn't really matter how you set the matches vertically. The easiest way is to stick them into plasticine immediately after spreading. Why vertical? So that the mass applied to them does not shift to one side under the influence of gravity. Let it slide evenly along the straw. Otherwise, when ignited, the ignited pieces will fly off in an unpredictable direction.

In general, we leave the matches to dry for at least a day. Until complete and unconditional drying of the composition with sulfur and berthollet salt.

Using

For ignition, use the usual matchbox, or rather, his grater. We strike carefully and in a safe direction (away from ourselves), since due to the large mass of the composition, the ignition process will be quite intense, sparks may fly off. Do not inhale the smoke (sulfur dioxide) emitted by combustion.

You don't have to wait for the match to light up. We immediately use it for its intended purpose. That is, for making a fire. By the way, you must have hurried to throw away the straws from the ordinary matches from which the heads were removed? In vain. They would serve as a good auxiliary kindling, especially if you pour in a whole handful. Since they are saturated with acid in order to obtain a stable flame (so that the wood does not smolder).

Seasoned fishermen often prefer free reservoirs for fishing. The chance of a good catch there is about 50 to 50, which gives the effect of surprise and a share of excitement. Paid fishing is no longer of sporting interest, as it practically guarantees good results.

The similarities and differences between different types of paintball: which game is safer and easier, and what sports training is necessary for. We understand all the nuances of this exciting game.

Today we have helpful advice is addressed to people who like to wander around nature with a gun (hunting season, its discovery, just around the corner) or go fishing. of course, they don't give up their hobby in winter either. Someone winter fishing I like it even more than summer. But it seems to me that there are still more “heat-loving” fishermen. As you know, nature is very changeable, and fishermen and hunters need to be always ready for any unforeseen situations, especially if you are somewhere far from "civilization". Here are hunting matches, this is exactly the "arsenal" that you need to arm yourself when going out into nature. After all, ordinary matches and lighters are even very unreliable during a long stay in nature. And such matches can help you out in various situations.

How to do it and what is needed for this?

And you can make such matches very easily and you will not need any super-materials for this. There are no problems with ordinary matches, except for them you also need ammonium nitrate, you will need nitro varnish to cover the matches, and the well-known silverware (it is needed in the form of powder).

The first thing we will do is mix dry with ammonium nitrate. We will mix these compounds 1: 1. When you mix these two components well, add nitro varnish to them and then mix the entire contents again. You will need to achieve a doughy state of this mixture.

  • When you get this consistency, roll out this "inedible" dough in a thin layer and cut it into narrow strips. The width of such stripes should be a very small millimeter or two.
  • Next, we will need regular matches. We take one of them and spirally wind those narrow stripes that we have already cut out on it. You need to start reeling from the middle of the sulfur head down and finish doing it in the middle of the match itself. So, we wrap each match (that is, based on the number of prepared strips) and then let them dry.
  • When the matches are already dry well, you will need to cover them with nitro varnish. You can cover with a regular brush, which children use when drawing. BUT, cover the sulfur head of the match with this varnish DO NOT DO IT! Otherwise, you will simply have problems lighting matches. Someone thinks that it is much easier to dip the whole match directly into nitro lacquer, but again this does not need to be done, otherwise the head of the match will also be covered with varnish and problems with ignition cannot be avoided.
  • That's it, your hunting matches are completely ready! So you can now safely use them for making a fire, moreover, you can use not even the driest firewood. Such home-made matches can successfully burn even in water, and the wind cannot extinguish the flame of such matches.

But in this video they will show you well and tell you again. Try it and you will succeed.

Once upon a time, hunting matches were a necessary part of the equipment of a hunter, tourist and fisherman, and helped them to make a fire in extreme conditions.

Today, in view of the fact that there is a huge selection of means for starting a fire, from lighters to, it would seem, there is no special need to lug these matches on an extreme journey.

We decided to find out whether this is really so or not. Let's figure it out.

Let's consider the main ways how you can kindle a fire in the field, with the exception of exotic methods such as friction and metal wool.

Gas and petrol lighters

The advantage of a lighter is obvious

  • burns in almost any conditions,
  • she is not afraid of getting wet,
  • she has a supply of gas that will last for a long time,
  • cons are difficult to set fire to in severe frost, you have to somehow heat it up, and after getting wet, you need to dry the lighter somewhere, namely flint.

Gasoline lighters have similar characteristics and are somewhat superior to gas lighters, for example

  • burn well in the wind
  • trouble-free operation in severe frost,
  • the main disadvantage is to carry gasoline,
  • minus the high price for high-quality copies, due to the lack of tightness of the structure, gasoline constantly evaporates from it.

Flint

an excellent alternative to other methods of starting a fire,
  • requires skill and dry kindling,
  • strongly depends on the humidity of the environment and the strength of the wind.
  • not afraid of getting wet, just wipe and dry a little and you can knock out a spark.
  • minus - you need to solve problems with tinder, you need skill.

Regular matches

Simple and cheap, they work in any frost.

  • become unusable when wet,
  • need a chirkash,
  • difficult to use in strong wind,
  • limited quantity,
  • can fall into pockets or a backpack.

As it turns out, there are a lot of methods for kindling a fire in the field, the easiest and most convenient is to take an ordinary lighter, or preferably several, throwing them into your pockets and a backpack, and in most situations the problem with the fire will be solved.

This is true, but up to a certain point. Let's move on to hunting matches.

Hunting matches

In fact, these are ordinary matches, but unlike ordinary ones, they are covered with a solution of berthollet salt, so they can burn in any conditions, even under water or in a strong storm. The burning time of these matches is about 10 seconds.

The main purpose of these matches is the ability to use them in non-standard situations or extreme conditions, for example, overturned in a kayak or fell through the ice after falling into cold water.

Unfortunately, if you are lucky enough to get ashore after that, the danger to life does not disappear, the problem remains how not to die from hypothermia or hypothermia, because the equipment will most likely be sunk or become wet and you will not be able to change clothes quickly.

Hands will tremble from the cold and kindling a fire with ordinary matches, a lighter or flint will most likely simply be impossible, and in addition to this, according to the law of meanness, a strong icy wind will surely rise.

Actually, in such situations, hunting matches will help save your life, but on one condition if they were hidden in the equipment that will remain on you in this situation.

So the question of whether hunting matches are needed or not is definitely needed, but they must be included in the emergency equipment set and kept constantly with a person, otherwise there will be no sense from them.

In normal situations, it is enough to use an ordinary lighter, ordinary matches or for amateurs.

How to make hunting matches

In view of the low price (from 30 rubles) for hunting matches, it is not advisable to make them yourself and it is not possible, since it is impossible to make full-fledged matches that can burn in water, under water and in the wind at home, everything that is possible is to protect ordinary matches with wax or paraffin from moisture and increase the burning time, but here it is easier to buy gas lighter and enjoy it.

What kind of hunting matches to buy

The only thing before taking them with you is to check their quality:

  • whether they burn under water or after getting wet,
  • withstand strong winds.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of low-quality matches on sale.

It should also be remembered that hunting matches have a shelf life, and may lose their function during long-term storage.

Example and overview in video from Youtube channel tushich

How and where to store hunting matches

Since hunting matches are an essential element of survival, and may be needed in an emergency, they should be stored on the body in an emergency kit.

The main requirements for an emergency kit are its miniature and inconspicuousness, so a sealed container hanging around the neck or fastened to the trousers, or lying in a trouser pocket is perfect. as an option, you can use either ready-made matches already packed in sealed packaging, for example, as in the photo:

Or order, for example

ABOUT old ways We know the kindling of fire mainly from the history and descriptions of travelers who observed them in the camps of the so-called backward tribes. Themselves have long been accustomed to using matches. It should be noted that in last years lighters and auto ignition for gas stoves... However, matches have not lost their relevance to this day. But how much do we know about them? How often do people look closely at such familiar, everyday things?

Matches are different

Even the simplest, "home" matches are conceived quite cleverly. The main secret is in their heads, which satisfy two almost opposite requirements: the tip of a match should not fall off the stick when ignited, crumble during storage, and the stick should go out almost instantly when it burns out a little.

Even more difficult are the tasks that hunting matches must perform. They are charged with the obligation to burn much longer, they must give a large and hot flame, and they are supposed to ignite both in the wind and in the rain. As a result, hunting matches below the head are coated with an additional compound and can burn from 10 to 20 seconds - what you need when you kindle a fire in “non-flying” conditions. Covering the head with a special film prevents it from getting wet. So a quality product can ignite even in the rain.

Storm matches are even more "weather-resistant": naphthalene and starch are also included in their coating, so that even a wind of 12 points is not an obstacle to their ignition.

For those who rarely use such incendiary sticks, we note: it is undesirable to use them in an apartment (house) - they have too much flame, and they smoke with a pungent and unpleasant odor.

The most famous way

Hunting matches can be bought at any specialty store for fishermen and hunters. However, if there is no such thing near your house, and it is lazy to go to look for it, then you can handle it yourself. Most often, do-it-yourself hunting matches are made from ordinary ones with additional substances: silver, nitrolac and ammonium nitrate. Serebryanka is mixed with saltpeter in equal amounts, varnish is added to them. Everything is kneaded like dough until it starts to resemble it. The resulting "plasticine" is thinly rolled out (better with a glass bottle, which you do not mind throwing out afterwards). The pancake is cut into the narrowest strips, not wider than a couple of millimeters, but better still. These ribbons are spirally wound around the match, from the head to the middle of the stick. Almost finished hunting matches are left to dry, after which the wound strips are painted with varnish. In no case should the head be varnished - the match will not light without sulfur. Of course, the work is painstaking, almost jewelry, but in the country, on a hike or fishing, you will not be left without fire.

You can do it differently

Less well known is another way of making a hunting match. Instead of the above components, cotton threads and paraffin wax are suitable. The threads are tightly wound on household matches, preferably not in one layer. The head naturally remains open. The paraffin is melted, and the workpieces are dipped into it. It's easier to just throw matches at it, and then catch it; but, in order not to wait for the excess "wax" to drain, it is better to take each one with tweezers and dip it into the melt.

But whichever method you make hunting matches, do not forget to attend to the dry "swirl" (or "striker" - call it what you want). Without it, the most water-resistant matches won't light. The easiest method is to keep it in a tightly tied condom.

Will be useful on holidays too!

Craftsmen believe that such a hunting device is appropriate not only in field conditions. If you introduce some small iron sawdust into the composition that processes matches in the first version of production, then during combustion you can observe a beautiful spark fireworks like the one you don't want to cancel a holiday in bad weather, and not every factory product will "agree" to work in dampness. So you can please children with safe homemade products.

Hunting matches suitable for use even in the worst climatic conditions... The burning time of one match is on average 20 seconds, during which time you can easily kindle a fire even with damp small twigs. Matches are not afraid of wind or moisture. Buy Hunting matches and give yourself the opportunity not to get nervous because the matches are constantly extinguished from the wind. We offer matches of the well-known company Kedr Plus, many are already familiar with their products and use only these matches.
