When it comes to the fence of the estate, the board is most often relegated to the last plan. This material is considered by many to be temporary and not a creative option.

However, in last years the design of wooden fences has changed significantly. From primitive "ladders" they turned into masterpieces of wooden architecture. Great appearance, ease of installation and minimum cost attract the attention of many owners of suburban housing to them.

In this article, we bring to your attention an overview of modern board fences and practical advice for their manufacture. We hope that after getting acquainted with the options presented, you will change your mind and build a beautiful and practical wooden fence in the country with your own hands.

Plank fence options

In order to install a wooden fence, you do not need to strain your imagination and test your design talents. Dozens of interesting types of fences have already been built and photographed.

The simplest option is horizontal fence from the croaker. Its cost is minimal, and the aesthetic qualities are high. Before installation, the slab must be ennobled by grinding, tinted by firing and varnished. Otherwise, its external will be associated with pasture for livestock.

One more piece of advice. Wooden fence from unedged board look perfect with wooden buildings. In the photo below White color the walls of the mansion and the columns of the entrance group do not fit well with the wooden fence.

Slab fence - simple, inexpensive and aesthetically pleasing

In the design under consideration, the runs from the boards are fixed between two wooden posts. The ends of the racks are protected from rain by an inclined bar. The most vulnerable point - the contact of wood and concrete requires high-quality insulation. Here you need to use modern antiseptic impregnations or coating with hot bitumen.

The slab, peeled from the bark and overlapped, looks very nice in the fence. He is nailed to wooden poles. The edged board covers the front joint. An easy-to-make plank canopy crowns the structure.

Another interesting option- "artificial" croaker. In this case, the edges of the boards are cut so that they form a symmetrical pattern.

To create a color contrast, the wooden linings on the poles are treated with a dark stain.

The "decorative turn" method is equally acceptable for both slab and edged boards. In the latter case, we get an aesthetic fence-blinds. When viewed directly, he looks deaf. However, due to the gaps between the slats, this design is not only well ventilated, but also partially transmits the sun's rays.

Weaving plants love these fences and quickly turn them into flowering trellises.

Fragment of the design of the fence-blinds from the edged board

In passing, we note that best base for fixing fence boards - metal posts. A compromise option is to embed steel clips in concrete from scraps of a profile pipe. Wooden racks are inserted into them and fixed with self-tapping screws.

A bit of imagination and a nondescript obapol croaker turns into a designer picket fence guarding the “kingdom of Berendey”.

Poles for such a fence can be cut from a cheap round timber thinner. The natural form of this material will fit perfectly into the "country design" chosen for this fence.

The classic picket fence (planed board with a rounded edge) remains a relevant element of the fence structure. The only condition is not to paint it with dull green or brown paint. It is better to treat the planks with an antiseptic and open them with a good varnish a couple of times. Wood after such refinement will sparkle with golden hues and will last 10 years longer.

If you prefer tinted wood, then use dark brown paint for this purpose. It will reliably protect the fence from moisture and give it a noble look.

A blank edged fence looks better when the vertical slats are overlapped on both sides rather than on one side. This editing scheme creates a rhythmic stepped structure. The ends of the boards are covered from above with a planed plank. A decorative framing belt is also mounted at the bottom of the fence.

A blind fence will not look boring if arched lattices from a thin plank are introduced into its design scheme.

Arched lattice inserts eliminate the monotony of a blind fence

When choosing material for the fence, pay attention to the terrace board. It is strong, expressive and durable. Attach it to metal posts installed in a concrete foundation.

The photo below shows a double-sided version. horizontal mounting terrace board (fence-American). To increase rigidity in the middle part of the spans there are vertical bars.

Decking fence - 50 year guarantee

Such a fence cannot be called cheap, but it is very durable and beautiful. Terrace board It is made from a colored wood-polymer composite and does not need to be painted.

In the fence structure, the board can be combined with a bar. Below we see a variant of the fence, in which the beam is installed on the outside, and the board is nailed on the inside. Its joints are not visible, because they are covered by a beam. Brown tinted wood in contrast with the white plinth gives the structure a solid and solid look.

From the facade, this fence is made solid. There is no railing on the side of the board at the bottom. This decision was made to improve the ventilation of the site.

Russia is far from America, but the romance of cowboy ranches has reached us. On a spacious plot, remote from other buildings, a low country-style fence looks great. Its base is thick wooden poles, to which three belts of boards are horizontally nailed on one side. In the upper part, a wooden plank is launched crosswise, closing the open "windows" of the sections.

Wicker board fences

If someone tells you that you can weave fences from a board, don't hesitate. Today it is the most fashionable topic. A wicker fence made of boards looks great, and there are many options for its installation.

The board for the wicker fence should not be very thick. Therefore, having bought a trimmed "thirty" in the warehouse, you can safely plan it on both sides to a thickness of 25 mm. The optimal width of the bar is from 8 to 10 cm.

The simplest version of such a fence resembles the wall of a summer gazebo. Having made openwork panels from wooden lamellas, they are attached to the pillars. For contrast, you can nail a frame from a dark board along the contour.

Plank fence with a diamond pattern is elegant and light

The wooden fence post is antiseptic and concreted in the ground

And here is another, no less interesting plank wickerwork.

Here, a thin planed board 25 mm thick and 2.5 meters long is staggered to the posts. The bend gives it original way installation: the ends of the boards are alternately fastened on one side and on the other side of the wooden rack. In the middle part of the span there is a vertical rail that fixes the bend. Places of fastening of boards to racks are covered by laths.

Vertical weaving from boards looks no worse. In this case, the answer to the question of which board is better to use for the fence is obvious: at a length of 2 meters, the bar is most easily bent, no more than 16 mm thick and 8 cm wide.

A wicker fence is good for everyone, but it can also be improved by combining it with a picket fence.

Such a design is quite difficult to install, but its picturesque appearance justifies all the effort expended.

The original version of the fence, combining weaving from boards with double-sided installation picket fence

Those who wish to build an exclusive fence from boards should contact experienced master. Only he will be able to assemble the construction depicted in this photo.

Each board for such a fence is cut separately, based on the section template. At its ends and side faces, connecting spikes are cut, with which the boards are connected to each other according to the principle of puzzles, attached to the pillars and to the lower belt.

The advice that we gave in the course of the article should be supplemented with the parameters of the main elements of the board fence:

  • The size of the cross section of wooden poles is 10x10 cm.
  • In case of use for racks steel profile its cross section must be at least 40x40 mm (wall 2 mm).
  • Horizontal crossbars (runs) must have a cross section of at least 30x50 mm with a rack spacing of 2 meters.
  • For ease of installation of wooden girders, mounting plates “ears” with holes drilled in them for self-tapping screws must be welded to steel racks.

At the stage of purchasing materials, the question arises of how to calculate how many boards are needed for the fence. It is solved simply. If the fence is solid, then its total length must be multiplied by the height and thickness of the purchased board.

For a lattice fence from a picket fence, the calculation is done differently. Taking into account the selected step of the slats, their number is determined by 1 running meter fences. The resulting pieces are multiplied by the total length of the fence, and if necessary, converted to cubic meters, multiplying the total area by the thickness of one plank.

Another important point- how to paint a fence from boards? If you save on the quality of the paint, then the fence will have to be updated more often. Therefore, we recommend buying expensive paint for outdoor use. Before applying it, treat the board with hot drying oil or antiseptic impregnation. The consumption of paint and impregnation will be minimal when applied to a planed board. Consider this nuance when choosing a material.

Considering the large area of the wooden fence, you need to paint it with a roller or spray gun. Omissions and flaws made during work are corrected with a paint brush.

Fences made of natural materials are becoming increasingly popular among summer residents. At the same time, the leading positions remain behind the tree.

A board fence is a simple structure that can be assembled on your own, and in the hands of masters from such ordinary raw materials, unique compositions will be obtained that will not only protect, but also decorate the estate.

The most reliable types of fence boards are as follows:

Edged is most in demand due to availability, ease of fastening, the possibility of painting in any color.

Popular do-it-yourself installation methods

In order to build not just a fence that outlines the boundaries of the site and protects from prying eyes, but also an aesthetically interesting structure, it is recommended to use different assembly techniques.

Consider the most famous types in more detail.

Herringbone (ladder)

Refers to double-sided fences. She is also called parquet way board installation. Vertical (horizontal) ones are mounted to the longitudinal logs, to which boards are attached to each other in a vertical (horizontal) position. It turns out sections with an inclined board at an angle, which looks like blinds. Each element is placed next to the next with a small gap, overlapping it.

An important feature of the ladder is that the space outside it is not visible, but the inclined openings perfectly let in air and light.

Photo: with spans of boards laid in a herringbone.

To get a horizontal Christmas tree you need:

  1. Proceed to fill in the section below.
  2. Fasten the board first to the vertical supports, guide beams.
  3. Overlap the next row. In this order there is an alternation.
  4. Align the ends of the material.

To simplify the fastening process and achieve an inclined position of the elements, wooden linings are fixed to the supports according to the type of steps or a channel is substituted.

checkerboard

Nice way to mount.

A significant advantage of this method is the closure of the area from the rear from prying eyes, but at the same time the territory is blown by the wind. In addition, in such a fence, both sides are front and look facade.

There are two types of chess:

  1. Vertical . Boards are fixed vertically to horizontal beams. It is necessary to calculate the location of the material so that each element overlaps the previous one by ⅓.
  2. Horizontal. The mounting method is similar to the previous one. In the spans between the pillars, additional vertical supports are placed. For this, an unedged board is most often used. The boards are fixed horizontally.

In a chessboard, the fence can be made with gaps or a solid method.

If used as pillars profile pipes, then metal corners must be welded to them, on which the beams must be fixed with self-tapping screws.

Do not forget about the markings - this is a guarantee of the exact location of the boards in a checkerboard pattern. Therefore, it is better to pre-designate the places of fixation of each bar.

Fence

An ordinary picket fence also looks beautiful if it is painted in an original way or the top of the planks is made in a wave or rounded.

Photo:

Most simple design fence. Nails are nailed to the lags or edged boards are attached to self-tapping screws, not close, but with a certain step between the elements.

Network

An unusual way to design a fence, when horizontal and vertical boards are alternately intertwined with each other.

No less popular is a wicker fence made of tree branches, vines. This design outlines the boundaries of the garden, flower beds, garden. But the service life of such fences is small - up to 10 years.

Given the height of the fence, they are divided into 3 types:

  1. Up to 1 m. Horizontal weaving is used. Suitable for decorating flower beds, wells, garden paths.
  2. From 1 to 1.5 m. Both types of weaving are allowed. With such a fence, the site is divided into separate zones.
  3. Up to 2 m. Protective fence. Separates the estate from the street, neighboring plot. Both types of weaving are suitable, their combination is allowed.

With proper design, the braid will become an interesting fence for a private house.

Lattice

Refers to decorative designs. It consists of a wooden frame, in the middle of which a lattice of planks is fixed. The fence is easy to assemble with your own hands. It is created in one or two rows of crossed planks.

Before purchasing material for the fence, you need to accurately calculate how many planks, boards you will need, and take at least 10% more.

It should be noted that wood goes well with metal, brick supports, forging, masonry.

Board layout types

There are several types, which is why externally the designs have significant differences.

Vertical or horizontal

traditional fastening methods. The elements are fixed to the legs with two screws or nails at the top and bottom. The top of the material can be cut to form an acute angle. An alternative is to cover the sections with visors.

Solid or through

In the first version, the boards are mounted tightly one to the other, forming a solid wooden wall.

In the second, boards of the same size are attached to the joists with a certain step.

How to find out how much material is needed for fencing

For this, it is important to take into account the type of construction.

For example, in a solid fence, the total length of the fence is multiplied by the height and thickness of the material. Get the number of board cubes required.

In the case of the fence, the situation is different. First you need to calculate the number of boards per 1 linear meter of the fence. The resulting figure is multiplied by the total length of the fence.

If the result is needed cubic meters, then the area of \u200b\u200bthe fence is multiplied by the thickness of one plank.

The design will be more attractive if the width of the gap between the slats is equal to the width of the slat itself.

Scheme of installing a fence from a board on poles from a metal profile

The generally accepted height of the fence ranges from 1.5 to 2.5 m.

When building a fence yourself, it is worth considering a few subtleties:

  1. Vertical poles are installed in increments of 2.5–3 m.
  2. The evenness of the attached elements must be checked with a level.
  3. To increase the support area and improve the rigidity of the structure, special shoes are attached to the supports.
  4. All wood before assembly needs pre-treatment with antiseptics, fire retardants and other protective agents.
  5. Only carefully dried raw materials can be painted.
  6. There are many oil-based paints on the market. It is not recommended to buy them, because they quickly crack under the influence of external factors.
  7. If nails are used for fasteners, then they should be taken with a galvanized coating, which is not very susceptible to corrosion.

If you want to keep the natural look of the wood, then you can soak the boards with stain, wax or varnish.

Photo gallery

In our photo gallery you will find many ways to design wooden fences that will suit different styles landscape design.

Which fence option to choose, whether to make it yourself or order assembly from specialists - it's up to you. The main thing is that the resulting design becomes a strong protection and decoration of the site.

You can secure your property with different materials, but the most colorful and appropriate outside the city has always been a wooden fence.

At first glance, this construction seems quite simple, however, if you take up construction without knowing some of the subtleties, it is unlikely to be durable.

From this article you will learn what wood fences are and how to carry out work on the construction of such a structure.

A wooden fence consists of many elements that can be arranged in completely different ways. At the same time, wood is extremely easy to process, so at home it can be given any shape.

Both of these circumstances lead to a huge variety of fence designs, of which the most popular are:

  1. Wattle: the second name is a braided fence. Thin stakes are dug into the ground with a certain frequency, which are braided with horizontally located flexible thin rods. There are no straight lines and clear geometry, however, we can say that the decorative properties of this fence are most pronounced - it is strongly associated with antiquity and national traditions. Wattle is extremely easy to manufacture, but you should be prepared for the fact that of all the varieties of a wooden fence, it is the least durable.
  2. Ranch: although this design is called in the Western manner, it was not borrowed at all. We have been using such fences for a long time where functionality is at the forefront - for fencing pastures, vegetable gardens, orchards, etc. Like wattle, a ranch fence is made without any difficulties: wooden beam just nail a few long poles or boards.
  3. Palisade: this type of wooden fence is solid, that is, with a sufficient height, it completely hides the fenced area from the views of those walking along the street. It is built like this: one to one logs or boards burst into the ground, the tops of which are sharpened at an angle of about 90 degrees. As you can see, it is much more difficult to get over such a fence than through a wattle fence or a ranch, but the material consumption is impressive - not only because of the location of all the elements close, but also because a significant part of them is in the ground.
  4. Lattice: openwork design, due to its aesthetic merits, is incredibly popular. Most often, slats or narrow boards do not cross at a right angle, as in a conventional lattice, but with a slope - this is more interesting. The lattice fence is successfully used not only for fencing the territory, but also for highlighting individual zones within it, for example, flower beds.
  5. Fence.

The last option is the most "popular", known to everyone.

ranch style fence

The picket fence owes its popularity to the following important qualities:

  • quickly and easily built;
  • is not unnecessarily material-intensive;
  • thanks to its even and neat “combing” it looks very good.

The design has the following form: racks are dug into the ground, to which two horizontal threads or veins are nailed; further, vertically narrow boards with pointed tops - shtaketins - are nailed to these threads with a certain step. Fences are installed with a fairly wide clearance, which is the reason for the efficiency of this fence.

Owners of suburban real estate often prefer wooden fences. – simple, eco-friendly and eye-pleasing design.

Consider the types of fences from unedged boards.

Mounting technology

There may also be differences in technology. They consist in the method of constructing the underground part, that is, the base.

There are two options:

  1. The fence is built without a foundation.
  2. The foundation is laid at the foundation.

The first method is the cheapest, in which racks made of timber or steel pipe are buried directly into the ground.

Building a fence on a foundation is more expensive, but it also looks more presentable.

Stages of installation of wooden fences

In our high-tech era with its metal-plastic-glass dominance, everything that reminds of a real nature especially dear to the heart. Therefore, probably, country style in landscape design especially in demand today. The classic wooden fence not only fits well with it, but, perhaps, can even be considered an integral part of this style.

The construction of such a fence will be quite within the power of even a beginner, and at the same time, it does not need any intricate decorations, since it is quite self-sufficient without them.

Scheme of installation of a wooden fence with metal poles

What should one do who wants to erect a more complex fence? First of all, you need to choose the right material. It is best to use blanks made of durable wood species - oak, aspen, acacia, mulberry, ash, Siberian larch. The latter is famous for its special durability, as it is very resistant to moisture.

Birch wood is the least dense, so you should not make a fence from it - parts will often have to be changed. It is also undesirable to use pine or spruce, which are known for their softness.

Wood must be carefully inspected for rotted places or affected by fungus. Further, all blanks should be thoroughly soaked with some modern antiseptic.

Very reliable impregnation for wood - the so-called Swedish paint - you can prepare yourself.

Here's what it consists of:

  • iron minium: 260 g;
  • iron vitriol: 260 g;
  • table salt: 260 g;
  • rye flour: 580 g;
  • drying oil (can be replaced linseed oil): 240 g;
  • water: 4.5 l.

Prepare like this:

  1. A paste is cooked from flour and 3 liters of water.
  2. The finished mixture is passed through a sieve to remove lumps.
  3. The purified paste is returned to the fire and salt and iron sulfate are immediately added to it.
  4. With constant stirring, a little drying oil is added to the mixture, then water. The cooking process should be continued until the ferrous sulfate is completely dissolved.

The result is a mixture of golden color. If this color does not suit you, instead of red lead, you can use manganese peroxide or ocher. It is necessary to use this impregnation in such an amount that per 1 sq. m of the surface took about 200 - 300 ml.

If you are short on free time, look for already cut and processed material on sale.

Also on preparatory stage it is necessary to determine the height of the future fence.

A “transparent” fence is made about 1.5 m high, a solid one is higher than human height, up to 2.5 m.

Step-by-step instructions for installing a wooden fence

When building a fence, you need to act as follows:

  1. At the site of the future fence, debris and vegetation growing there are removed.
  2. At the corners of the fenced area, wooden pegs or steel pins are driven in, after which a nylon cord, fishing line or twine is pulled between them.
  3. We install pegs along the stretched fishing line, indicating the position of the gate posts and the gate.
  4. Now you need to figure out how long the sections should have, so that a whole number of them fit into the gaps between the already installed pegs. The length of the sections on different sides of the fence, for example, on the east and south, may differ, but not so much that they appear to the observer to be completely the same.
  5. Having decided on the length of the sections (preferably no more than 2 m), place pegs to indicate the location of the intermediate racks.
  6. At the place where the pegs are installed, recesses are dug for racks. The soil should be selected to a freezing depth (but not less than 0.5 m), the value of which for a given latitude can be found in SNiP on building climatology. If the laying depth is smaller, the heaving forces in the freezing soil will gradually squeeze out the rack. It is most convenient to make recesses with a garden drill.
  7. At the bottom of the recesses, a sand cushion 120 mm thick is arranged, after which they proceed to install the racks. The recessed part of each rack, if it is made of wood, must be protected from the effects of ground moisture by wrapping it in roofing material (shooting with a construction stapler) or coating with a thick layer bituminous mastic. Also, to prevent possible decay, it is useful to burn the wood in this place.
  8. First you need to set the height of the corner posts. They are installed vertically in the pit, propped up with wooden wedges or pieces of brick, after which a tightly stretched rope is tied to the heads. Now you need to move back some distance and see if the rope is parallel horizontal lines in the construction of the house, for example, roof overhangs or horizontal elements window frames. If the rope is oblique relative to these landmarks, you need to raise or lower one of the racks by changing the thickness of the sand cushion located under it.

It makes no sense to achieve a strictly horizontal position of the rope using a water level, since it is the visual correspondence of the fence to the house or other elements located on the site that matters.

Board installation diagram

Having set the racks in height, they are brought to a strictly vertical position (here you already need to use the building level) and the pits are covered with a mixture of sand and soil with a layer-by-layer rammer or concreted.

Similarly, intermediate racks are installed, previously set along a stretched rope.

If the fence is supposed to be made especially high, it is desirable to weight the recessed part of the racks by attaching several steel plates to it.

Further, two horizontal beams are attached to the racks - one at the top, the second at the bottom. These will be the veins, to which we will later attach the pickets. Of course, they must be parallel to the stretched rope.

timber fence

If sections of steel pipes are used as racks, then brackets must be welded to them to fasten the veins

It remains to nail pointed pickets to the veins with an equal step. The line formed by their tops should be parallel to the landmark in the form of a stretched rope.

Wooden fencing is an economical and at the same time durable fencing option. is associated with some nuances that you need to know about before starting construction.

Palisade, wattle fence, slab fence - there are many options for wooden fences. It will help you decide on the type of construction.

Care

At least once every two years, and preferably annually, the fence must be painted or varnished. Lacquer is best used yacht - it provides the best protection.

If you want to give the fence an unusual look, paint the pickets in different bright colors - then it will look like a picket fence made of colored pencils.

Another interesting option is to use white and black paint to make the fence look like a piano keyboard.

It should be remembered that a board or beam is most vulnerable in the place where the cut is made across the fibers. Here the paint must be applied especially carefully and generously.

If somewhere the processing was not completed in a timely manner and the wood began to rot, the damaged area must be cut out. Further, a galvanized steel overlay is fixed at this place.

If, for the same reason, any of the steel elements has begun to rust, it should be treated with a rust-converting compound. If corrosion has severely destroyed the material, the element must be replaced.

In case of loosening of any of the pillars, you need to dig a hole next to it and see if the wood has rotted. If not, do this:

  • the pillar is supported by props;
  • dig it in to a depth of 20 cm;
  • a brick battle is poured into the recess and concrete is poured on top.

Concrete gains sufficient strength in a few days - then it will be possible to dismantle the supports.

If the check revealed rotting of the support, you need to dig to its base, cut out the damaged area and install a column of concrete or brick instead.

Price

If you order the construction of a picket fence with a gap between pickets of 20 mm in length from 30 to 100 m to a specialized company, then for 1 r.m. you have to pay the following prices:

  • at a height of 1.5 m: 1140 rubles;
  • at 1.8 m: 1220 rubles;
  • at 2 m: 1280 rubles.

With a length of more than 100 m, a discount is provided and 1 r.m. will cost, respectively, 1070 rubles, 1150 rubles, 1200 rubles.

A wooden solid fence of the same height will cost 1280 rubles, 1360 rubles. and 1410 rubles. for 1 r.m. with a length of 30 to 100 m and 1180 rubles, 1260 rubles. and 1310 rubles. for 1 running meter with a length of over 100 m.

The construction market is now expanse. What only materials for fences are not sold. Can be built stone wall with forged ornate patterns or a solid brick fence without frills, solid plastic sheets in an urban style or economical - from corrugated board, stretch the mesh or set up metal posts. There is a rotation of trends, today they prefer one type of fencing, tomorrow another. But there is one group that does not obey fashion trends. They are always in demand. These are wooden fences. About their types, pros and cons, about how to make a wooden fence for a country or country house with your own hands, and many, many photos - in our article.

Types of wooden fences

A wooden fence around a residential building or in a country house, especially made by oneself, is a subject of special pride for the owner. The degree of involvement in the process of its construction can be different: from the installation of finished processed elements to the independent cutting of trees, wood processing, and so on.

Before you go to the building hypermarket for shopping or into the woods with an ax, you need to decide on the type of fence that will be built. They are different.

The first classification separates the types of fences depending on the functional purpose. They are built for:

  • designation of territorial boundaries;
  • penetration protection uninvited guests including animals;
  • providing isolation from the attention of passers-by and neighbors;
  • limiting noise, wind, dirt, dust and similar disturbances;
  • fencing of dangerous areas - ravines, steep slopes of reservoirs, roads and others;
  • landscape decorations.

Depending on the functions performed, the fence is built:

  • deaf;
  • transparent (mesh or lattice);
  • combined.

According to the construction technology, fences are distinguished on the foundation and without it.

When choosing, you should take into account the general style of the site, the fence should organically fit into its design and be combined with buildings. Consider the types of fences in terms of design in more detail.

Fence - the most popular type of wooden fence

The basis for such a fence is a wooden plank with a flat or beveled end. The standard version looks like this: they are driven into the ground or fixed with concrete mortar support pillars, horizontal logs are attached to them, and boards are already screwed vertically to them.

The organization of such a fence made of wood is considered the fastest and most economical. If desired, you can make it yourself, and with proper care This fence will last for many years. This explains its widespread popularity.

Another advantage of the picket fence is the ability to limit the site without shading the territory. This can be achieved by mounting pickets not solid, but with gaps.

If a standard fence seems boring, you can decorate it, for example, by installing a lattice at the top of the fence or diluting a solid canvas with them in the spans.

Another version of the described fence is the horizontal fastening of the lamellas. By the way, the longitudinal planks look great in the design of beds, shelves, benches, interior borders.

Palisade - simple but reliable

Palisade is called a wooden solid massive fence, consisting of closely standing logs with pointed tops. Such fences are very strong, impressive, they are difficult to overcome and break, they provide reliable sound insulation.

The paling cloth can be made independently. To do this, the processed stakes are sharpened at an angle of 40 degrees and set in a tight row. Of course, a lot of wood for construction will be required.

The described fence will stand for a long time, but it is not eternal. Due to the fact that during its installation the pouring of the foundation is not provided, over time the logs loosen and settle.

If the owner feels sympathy for palisade fences, but at the same time their massiveness is not needed, it is proposed to opt for a bamboo palisade. This fence is also wooden, it will give the estate a touch of exoticism.

Lattice or beautiful perforated wooden fence

The sheathing of a lattice fence consists of planks (usually of the same width) crossed vertically and horizontally or at an angle of 45 degrees. They can be mounted close to each other or with clearance, at equal distances or in groups, using strips painted in different colors and processed with varnishes, creating an original ornament.

This beautiful fence from wood looks like an openwork pattern. True, there is no need to talk about outstanding strength. As a rule, this type is chosen to perform the tasks of homestead zoning and decoration.

Often decorative wooden lattice fences are used as a support for climbing plants and flowers. The result is something like a living wall or panel. Another way to emphasize the elegance of such fences is to decorate the gates and gates with pergolas, arches, columns, canopies in the same style.

It is not difficult to make such wooden fences with your own hands.

This is the name of a complicated kind of picket fence, when the planks are attached alternately from the outer and inner sides of the frame, that is, in a checkerboard pattern. The location of the shtaketin can be deaf (close or overlap) and ventilated if a small space is left between the elements. Offset can be horizontal, vertical or diagonal. Such a wooden fence looks more elegant than a regular one.

Maybe the description sounds confusing, but the order of collecting a "chess" is no more difficult than a standard picket fence. It is only important to observe the order of fastening the slats.

The ranch is not only American

When the name sounds similar, the imagination immediately draws a picture of a spacious fenced pasture with cows walking along it and a brave prancing cowboy on a horse, in a hat and with pistols. Nevertheless, fences of this type have long been used in our area. As a rule, with their help, they delineate the boundaries of vegetable gardens, orchards, and spaces for grazing livestock. Sometimes the ranch serves as a decorative fence.

Structurally, a ranch-type fence consists of supports with several large horizontal and sometimes diagonal lags.

During the construction of fences of this type, the planks are attached to the frame with a gap or overlap at a given angle relative to the vertical or horizontal planes. The inclination of the cladding elements is ensured by calibrated pads.

It is not difficult to build such a fence yourself. The procedure is standard. First, the support pillars are installed, then the wooden lining. Usually, channels serve as the basis for fastening, making it easier to maintain the same angle of inclination. It is important not to forget about the cushioning material between the boards, which will provide sufficient ventilation, and, therefore, protection from decay.

Blinds like a kind of wooden fence

Fences, made in the form of "blinds", look very unusual. Boards are laid horizontally at an angle downwards. The result is a ventilated impenetrable fence. The distance between the bars can vary.

The standard design of such fences involves the organization of a local or strip foundation, and grooves are formed in the supports thus strengthened. Bars of preferably equal width are inserted into these holes (as an option, fence boards). Another option for fastening the beams is on vertical crossbars. An alternative name for such fences is "cross".

Wicker wooden fences

A "braid" is a design in which vine branches or thin wooden planks go around vertical or horizontal logs. Such a fence looks authentic, it is used in the design of the semi-antique site. Despite the apparent simplicity, the manufacture of such a wooden fence is not an easy task.

Another deceptive impression is fragility. The fact is that the skin elements are attached in a curved position, and, striving for straightening, they will fit quite tightly to the frame.

Basic requirements for fences

In order for wooden fences, curbs and other fences to be strong, reliable and stand for many years, it is necessary to adhere to the following design requirements for their construction.

  1. The maximum section length is 2.5 m. This is due to the fact that wood is not a lightweight material, so failure to follow this recommendation will lead to an increased load on the supporting frame and sagging of the structure.
  2. The installation depth of the support pillars should be equal to the depth of soil freezing in the region (usually 80-120 cm). In this case, the size of the underground part of the support must be at least a quarter of its total length. It is also important to take into account the level of groundwater, soil characteristics and other factors that can affect soil properties in the off-season.
  3. The support pillars located at the corners of the perimeter and serving as the base for the gates and wickets should be thicker.
  4. The distance between the bottom line of the canvas and the ground must be at least 15 cm.
  5. Support posts should rise above the upper boundary of the fence sheathing by at least 10 cm.

Wooden fencing: pros and cons

Wood is a raw material traditionally used to build a fence. Despite the saturated market of building materials, which includes both classic metal, brick and stone, as well as modern European fence, corrugated board and polycarbonate, the demand for wood is consistently high. This is due not so much to habit as to the outstanding virtues of wooden fences. They differ:

  • environmental friendliness;
  • attractiveness and originality;
  • variability of colors and textures;
  • ease of processing;
  • ease of installation;
  • the possibility of prompt replacement of worn structural elements;
  • cheapness and availability.

Wood goes well with most building materials and harmoniously fits into the design of any site. Such a fence can easily be built alone, special knowledge and skills are not required for this. The cost of wooden fences is lower than the popular brick, stone or metal fences, and the installation process is much easier and faster. The main unique advantage of these fences is due to the natural wealth, which gives a variety of textures and shades of wood for decoration.

It will be wrong if the shortcomings of the considered fences are not listed. There are few of them, but it is important to consider them when choosing a material:

  • tendency to ignite;
  • dependence on climatic factors;
  • vulnerability to harmful insects;
  • the likelihood of development of putrefactive processes;
  • limited service life (on average, 10 years).

Some of the listed shortcomings can be successfully stopped by treating boards, beams, logs with an antiseptic, flame retardant or a special pest control agent. To limit the impact of moisture, the upper ends are covered with protective strips and plugs, and the lower edge is not lower than the recommended level. For the same purpose, it is important to regularly get rid of vegetation in contact with the canvas.

How to make a wooden fence

So the decision has been made. A wooden fence will be built. Where to start? Like any serious event, the first stage is design. It is better if there is a cadastral plan of the site with precisely marked boundaries. The perimeter value indicated in this document is the main reference point. To facilitate the work, it is recommended to transfer the site diagram in compliance with the scale on paper.

Now you can start marking. This will require pegs, twine and a hammer. First of all, the locations of the corner supports are marked with stakes, after which a rope is pulled between them. Next, marks are driven in, indicating the location points of the gate, gate and all supporting pillars. After all the manipulations are completed, the results are transferred to a schematic drawing.

What tools will be needed

The following materials will be used to build an ordinary wooden fence with their own hands:

  • boards, picket fence, beams or others, in accordance with the project;
  • support posts or materials for their construction (metal, brick, concrete, wood);
  • cross boards or pipes;
  • cement, crushed stone, bituminous mastic;
  • fasteners (self-tapping screws, nails, bolts, and so on).

You should take care of the full arsenal of construction tools in advance, which includes:

  • shovel, crowbar, earth drill;
  • tools for working with wood - an ax, a jigsaw, a hacksaw, a planer, emery;
  • saw with discs cutting metal;
  • electric drill with sets of drills for wood and metal, screwdriver;
  • welding machine;
  • building level, plumb line, tape measure, twine;
  • hammer, pliers, screwdrivers, wrenches;
  • brushes for coloring and coating with protective agents.

The choice of wood species and its processing

The choice of wood species is made based on the planned functionality of the fence and decorative considerations.

The most popular raw material for the construction of protective structures is from coniferous trees(pine, spruce, cedar). Cedar has high strength, expressive texture, but it belongs to rare, and therefore expensive materials.

Pine and spruce are the most popular building materials. Their structure is saturated with resins that successfully resist the spread of rot and fungus. The moisture index of pine and spruce blanks is 15-20%, which corresponds optimal value exploitation of materials in the open air. The density of spruce is lower than that of pine, therefore it is easier to process, but the knotty is higher, which indicates an increased percentage of waste. Both breeds are prone to cracking.

Less durable, but more beautiful, especially after proper processing, are considered hardwoods- ash, beech, oak, birch, aspen, alder, mulberry, acacia, Siberian larch. The strongest fences are obtained from Siberian larch. Despite the fact that the main enemy of most tree species is moisture, when in contact with water, this material becomes even more solid. But birch has the lowest density, which means that the service life of products made from it is shorter. Oak wooden fences for a private house are a rarity, since the raw materials are not cheap. Nevertheless, oak is more often used in interior decoration.

The vulnerability of wood is associated with fluctuations in humidity: when it is high, it swells and is affected by mold, when it is low, it dries and cracks. To extend the life of the fence, the wood must be pre-treated with an antiseptic composition, which will increase its resistance to moisture, mold, and impregnation with a UV hardener to protect against ultraviolet radiation.

Fence construction technology

Wooden fences can be built on a foundation base or without it. In the first case, a trench breaks out along the entire perimeter and a tape, that is, a solid foundation, is poured. The second option involves digging holes for support poles at their installation sites. Such local holes are also concreted or filled.

There are technologies for building a fence with or without a base. The base, as a rule, repeats the material of the pillars and is made of brick, stone or concrete.

Consider the procedure for building a simple fence from wooden picket fence on a local basis.

Installation of supports and assembly of the frame

The universal algorithm for erecting any fence is as follows.

  1. Installation of supports, if necessary - pouring the foundation.
  2. Lag installation.
  3. Sheathing fastening.

Start over. Holes with a diameter of 40-50 cm and a depth of 100-120 cm are drilled or dug at the installation sites of the marking pegs. A sand cushion is laid and compacted on the bottom, the layer thickness of which should be 10-15 cm.

A support post is installed exactly in the center of the hole. If the backfill option is selected, then the pit is filled with a mixture of crushed stone and sand and compacted; if concreting, then poured cement mortar. The verticality of the support is strictly controlled using a plumb line or other devices.

Logs are easiest to mount on special brackets that you can make yourself or purchase at the store. If metal supports are used, then the fastening of the cross members is best done by welding. Depending on the height of the fence and the massiveness of the sheathing, the optimal number of veins is selected (usually 2 or 3). The frame is ready.

Final assembly and installation of wooden fences

At this stage, the frame is sheathed with pickets, boards, logs or other elements. They are attached to the lags with screws, bolts or nails. Depending on the approved design, the planks are installed close to each other or with a predetermined spacing. In order not to deviate from the horizontal, nails are hammered into the upper ends of the pillars, and twine is pulled between them.

Another option for mounting fence boards is to mount them on logs before installing the latter on poles. This method makes it easier to control the level of the lamellas and maintain an equal distance between them. In addition, stress is removed from the weight of the boards on the crossbars, which provokes their deflection.

Protection and finishing: how to cover

To protect the fence from the aggressive influence of natural phenomena, before painting, it is recommended to prime the surface, treat it with an impregnation, an antiseptic, cover it with protection products (Swedish paint, hot drying oil, yacht varnish) and moisture-resistant varnish. Keep in mind that some of the listed chemicals can distort the natural color of the wood.

A wide range of paints is offered in building hypermarkets. When choosing, it is necessary to pay attention not only to the desired shade, but also to the type of binder. So, oil paints are unlikely to last longer than three years, enamel ones are designed for a ten-year period. The most stable are water-dispersion dyes; they do not need to be updated for at least 20 years. Silicate and silicone compounds also proved to be excellent.

wooden fence color design

The most popular shade of a wooden fence is natural. Nothing compares to the natural beauty of wood. Special varnishes and colorless paints can emphasize and enhance the natural pattern.

An interesting effect can be achieved by pre-firing the boards.

Often the fence sheathing is painted in a shade that echoes colors, in which the house or parts of it are decorated, for example, balcony railings, terrace railings, columns, and so on.

Fence from natural wood of this type will emphasize the magnificence of your suburban area. Such a fence is decorative and can be painted in any color at the request of the customer. The price per linear meter is 1,345 rubles if it is made of spruce and pine, and 7,100 rubles if it is made of more valuable larch.

The boards of this type of fence are overlapped, which means that the fence will be ideally combined with a house finished with siding panels. A spruce or pine two-meter version of such a wooden fence will cost the owner 1,595 rubles per linear meter, the same fence, but made of larch - 8,500 rubles.

This fence is in many ways similar to the previous view, however, additional solidity is given to it by decorative elements made of concrete, improving the compatibility of the variety of this fence with stone houses. The price of a two-meter canvas per linear meter will be 1,535 rubles, when made from larch - 9,500 rubles.

Few people could have thought of this 100 years ago, but the modern wattle fence for the poor peasantry has turned into a very popular fence for owners with average and higher incomes. Such a two-meter fence made of spruce or pine will cost the homeowner 1,745 rubles per linear meter. A similar option, but from larch - 8500 rubles.

For those who want not to shut themselves off from the world, but to surprise it non-standard solutions created this type of wooden fence. A light and elegant two-meter-high fence made of spruce and pine will cost 1,595 rubles per linear meter. Larch fencing will cost more - from 6500 rubles.

Despite the abundance modern materials, the tree remains in demand in the production of such protective structures as a fence. This is due to several advantages, namely its beauty and environmental friendliness, a variety of design options, high practical qualities provided by modern developments in the field of wood protection. Thanks to them, a fence made of wooden picket fence lasts an exceptionally long time, without losing its strength characteristics under the influence of external factors such as temperature changes, humidity, exposure to ultraviolet radiation and microorganisms.

Wooden fences for giving - the most best option. If you chose desired material and provide proper care, such fences can last more than 10 years. As a rule, the protective functions of wooden fences are high, in contrast to their cost. For a relatively small price, you can pick up a very good option.

This type of fence will hide you from prying eyes, allowing you to enjoy on your site the harmony that nature itself gave. The price of spruce and pine for one linear meter will start from 1,185 rubles.
