What types of decorative corners are there, methods of application, installation rules and examples of use in the interior.

Decorative corners for walls

One of the most problem areas in the interior decoration are the outer corners.

It is quite difficult to paste over them with high quality, often the wallpaper is lifted at the corners, the corner is easy to damage, touching when moving furniture or carrying any solid large object.

Decorative corners help in solving these problems.

The corner protects the surface from mechanical damage, allows you to hide some flaws in the finish, make a transition from one material to another, close the ends of tiles or panels.

Where are applied

There are many options for using corners in the interior. They can be used to decorate both outside and inside corners of walls. Some difficulties arise when finishing corners other than 90 °; this requires special, so-called. folding corners. For finishing the curved surface of the corner, flexible, "arched", corner profiles are used.

The most common ways to use decorative corners:

  • Adjoining the window slope to the wall. It is extremely rare to see a slope, the near edge of which is not closed by a corner. In this case, their use protects the edge of the slope from damage and prevents the wallpaper from peeling off, which quite often happens at the outer corners. In addition to technical, the corner profile also carries an aesthetic load. The use of a white corner completes the window opening. A profile that contrasts with the slope and wall decoration can create the desired accent color or become an independent original interior detail.
  • Doorway decoration. The corners can also be used when decorating a doorway when the wall thickness is greater than the width door frame... In this case, additional strips are installed to the door, the adjoining of the end of which to the wall is closed by an angular element matched to the color of the door.
  • Protection of external corners of walls, columns, ledges. In this case, the corner protects the wall decoration from mechanical damage, for example, an accidental impact with a heavy oversized object. It helps to maintain the finish and layers of putty and plaster. Also, the use of a corner profile simplifies cleaning the room. Often hand marks remain on the outer corners, which are easier to remove from plastic than from wallpaper. Correctly selected contrasting corners avoid boring and monotony of the interior.
  • Decoration of openings. In interior design, instead of doors, an opening is often left, for example, between the kitchen and the living room. The corners serve to decorate and protect the corners.
  • Outside corners of walls lined tiled tiles or wall panels. The corner profile covers the ends of the tiles, because they differ in color from the face of the tile. If the tile is cut to size, and the cut edge is not sanded, it is easy to cut against such an angle. When installing the corner on the panel, they close the corner joint. The use of a special corner profile for these purposes is not always convenient, then decorative corners are used.
  • Decoration and protection of corners of gypsum plasterboard structures, for example, racks or shelves.
  • Furniture decoration, mirror framing. In addition to decorative functions, it protects the edges from chipping.

Varieties according to materials of manufacture

Corner profiles are made of various synthetic materials, MDF, wood, metal. Its appearance depends on the material of the corner, specifications and scope.

Metallic

Manufactured from aluminum, stainless steel, brass. Steel and brass products are polished and uncoated, while aluminum products are subdivided into polished, anodized and with a decorative coating, usually imitating wood, but can also be painted in different colors. They are mainly used in the manufacture of furniture, less often in interior decoration. To protect the ends of the furniture boards, they are covered with a multi-shelf corner, one of the shelves of which completely covers the end, the second goes slightly onto the plane. Unpainted profiles are suitable for framing mirrors and glass-covered paintings or posters.

Metal corners can be mounted on walls as a base for easy false ceiling type "Armstrong" or PVC panels. The aluminum product is attached to the steps as anti-slip pads and edge protection against chipping.

Wooden finishing

They are made from various types of wood, including valuable ones. Wooden corners are used to complete interior decoration made of wood, for example, wall cladding with a block house or clapboard.

With their help, the ends of the boards are closed, both on the outer and inner corners. Also, these products are suitable for decorating painted or wallpapered walls. In this case, they need to be painted or varnished. Wooden corners can only be used on strictly right angles, because they are fragile and can crack at the slightest effort to bend or straighten them.

Transparent silicone corners for wallpaper

If necessary, protect the corner and preserve the wallpaper pattern, stick a silicone corner profile. This material is quite soft and is well suited for rooms where small children are often present. Reduces the child's risk of injury from hitting a corner. The relative disadvantage of these products is that due to their transparency, they do not hide flaws in the decoration.

Polyurethane

They are smooth, with embossed ornaments and profiled. Smooth are similar to ordinary PVC corner profiles, differing from them in a greater thickness of the shelf. Three-dimensional ornament is often reproduced on the shelves.

For use in classic interiors, polyurethane profiles of complex cross-section, imitating plaster moldings, are produced. On sale there are white and painted in various colors, including imitating wood, you can also find painted in several colors, for example, the smooth part is like a tree, and the ornament is like gold. Due to the complex shape, they require great care in installation. Paints used in decoration fit well on polyurethane.

Plastic colored

Made from PVC. Visually imitate wood, metal surface, or simply painted in one shade. The palette of monochrome corners contains about 30 shades. If necessary, a white profile can be used with special paints in the desired shade. It is used everywhere in decoration, second only to white in popularity. For the design of arches and other curved surfaces, there is a special type of corners - flexible or arched.

MDF corners

They are 2 MDF strips glued together with a film. The film is applied from the front side, the pattern repeats the pattern on MDF panels. Due to the fact that the shelves are fixed movably relative to each other, the same profile can be used on surfaces mated at different, internal and external, sharp, straight and obtuse angles. They are usually used for wall cladding with MDF panels, but they can also be used instead of any other type of corners.

It is undesirable to use MDF corners in rooms with high humidity.

Decor of corners in an apartment: how to decorate corners in a room

The options for using decorative corners in the interior design of a room depend on many factors:

  • Surface material. White plastic cornerglued to the corner of the walls lined with clapboard will look ridiculous.
  • Finish colors. The red element should never be placed in a room designed in pastel colors.
  • General stylistic solution of the interior. Polished stainless steel profile will not fit into classic interior, polyurethane, "under the stucco", not suitable for high-tech style.
  • Purpose of the room. In the nursery, silicone corners are great. They will keep the corners intact and help keep your child safe from injury.

Wallpaper design options

To complete the finish after wallpapering, a profile from any of the above materials can be used. The main criterion when choosing a corner will be its color. The choice of color can be approached in different ways. If the joining walls are of about the same shade, you can choose the product to match the color of the walls, if different, to match the color of the wall at which the eye is more often directed. For example, when finishing the corner between the room and the hallway, it is more logical to choose a profile to match the color of the room's finishing.

One of the finishing options is decorating with a wooden corner, tinted in the color of the doors or the floor, using impregnation stain and varnished. For the same purposes, products made of MDF and PVC, decorated under a tree, are suitable. When designing a strict, laconic interior, metal corners will look good.

Solution for corners on slopes: the better to close up corners in an apartment

To complete the finishing of the slopes, corners are used in the color of the slope, it is almost always white. Often the materials for the slopes are a sandwich panel, therefore, so that the material does not differ much, corner PVC profiles are used. The width of the shelf is chosen such that it covers the end of the panel or gypsum board. If there are any defects in the finish near the window opening, for example, unevenly cut wallpaper, the corner is chosen of such a width that these errors are closed.

The angle between the wall and the slope is usually more than 90 °, in order for the corner to lie flat, it should be slightly "unbent" - put on a flat surface or a large-diameter pipe and lightly press with your hands, moving along the corner.

During the cold season, the profile should warm up to room temperature before working.

Option for decor under the wallpaper

For walls covered with wallpaper, an option with wallpapering a corner may be suitable. For these purposes, PVC, MDF, wood or smooth polyurethane profiles are suitable. The profile should be light in color, because dark may come out from under the wallpaper. Wallpaper is glued to it, the glue is allowed to dry, then, no earlier than the next day, they are mounted on the wall. The wallpaper on the corner must be glued in one piece, of such a size that the wallpaper goes onto the inside of the shelves.

How decorative corners are attached

For the installation of the corner profile, various adhesives are usually used, much less often metal and wooden parts fastened mechanically with self-tapping screws or nails.

What to glue plastic

For fastening PVC corners are used:

  • "liquid Nails";
  • acrylic sealant;
  • silicone sealant.

When using sealants, the profiles must be fixed for 12 hours after gluing with masking tape. The best result is given by liquid nails, some brands of this glue do not require fixing while drying. As a rule, such glue must be applied to one of the surfaces, press the second one, then remove, allow the glue to dry, and then firmly press the part to be glued.

For the installation of polyurethane products, you can also use liquid nails or special glue.

Finishing wooden corners in the apartment

The surface of the wooden corners must be protected with varnish or paint. The varnish will preserve the texture of the wood, the paint applied in a thick layer will hide it. If it is necessary to give the wood any shade, while retaining the texture, you should use a wood stain or tinting impregnation for wood.

Fasten wooden elements with liquid nails, joiner's glue or PVA. Can also be attached to finishing nails.

When driving a nail, the distance from the edge of the part to the nail should be more than 10 of its diameters.

How to glue a plastic corner on the wallpaper

The plastic corner is glued to the wallpaper using the same adhesives as to any other surfaces, i.e. liquid nails or sealants. It is important that the wallpaper at the installation site is well glued to the wall, the wallpaper glue is dry. It is best to wait a few days after pasting the wallpaper and only then do the decorating using the corners.

How much dries

The drying time of the glue is indicated on the package, and rarely exceeds 12 hours. When gluing to a silicone or acrylic sealant, it is advisable to keep the elements fixed for 24 hours.

Decorative corners allow you to solve many tasks for decorating a room. They are inexpensive and relatively easy to mount and dismantle, so you can experiment if you want.

Repairing an apartment or house is only half the battle. It is also important to maintain its condition for a long period. This can be difficult, since small children or pets are able to ruin the wallpaper in a short period of time, flooring, doors and other finishing materials. The outer corners of the walls, which are located on the "passage", for example, in the corridor or in front of the entrance to the room, can suffer most of all. Is it possible to get rid of such influence of time on the walls of the house and how can additional finishing of corners in the apartment help in this?

Such material for decorating an apartment as corners has several purposes:

  • visual alignment of the corner;
  • protection from damage that is inevitable in an apartment or house, especially where pets live;
  • protection against pollution;
  • decoration and wall decoration.

In addition, such a decorative finish for corners can be successfully used to improve appearance doorways, window plumb lines and panel joints. Advantages of plastic decorative corners

Installation options for finishing materials on the corners of the walls

The option of their installation will depend on the type of corners. Plastic products can be fixed using additional means (specialized glue, "hatless" nails) or using an adhesive layer that has already been applied to the inner surface of the corner. A clear advantage of the second option is the flexibility of the product and the possibility of breaking it at any angle. But not all the material with which the corners of the walls can be finished, it is possible, even during the production process, to apply an adhesive composition. For example, such a finishing material includes an artificial stone. It consists of tiles different sizeswhich are made of concrete or plaster. Any external corner in the apartment can be decorated with decorative stone. The design of modern hallways or living rooms in this way is very popular (photos can be viewed on Internet portals).

Regardless of the type of fastening chosen for this decorative element, the finishing of the outer corners should be done only after the repair of the walls has been completed. That is, all necessary work: Wallpaper glued, paint, decorative plaster, etc.

Installation of plastic decorative corners

Before proceeding with the installation, make sure that the wallpaper, layer of paint or plaster has dried sufficiently so as not to damage them with the plastic surface. You should also purchase an adhesive that will be used to attach the decorative corner. If a self-adhesive model is used, then there is no need to purchase such a tool. Please note that the adhesive on these corners is covered with protective paper, which must be removed before gluing to the wall surface.

As mentioned earlier, the following can also be used as "fastening" means:

  • carnations without caps;
  • liquid Nails;
  • sealant.

When buying liquid nails, you should pay attention to the fact that the product is not of high strength (the degree of strength is indicated on the packaging, as well as the list of materials with which this product can interact). Since when used with plastic products there is a risk of erosion. High strength liquid nails are designed for heavy (metal) parts.

Despite the fact that decorative plastic corners can visually transform the uneven corners of the wall, you need to determine what the level of "curvature" is. To do this, you can use a regular ruler or a flat board: it should be applied to the edges of the corners between which the unevenness is located and the degree of "distortion" should be analyzed. If the transition from a flat wall to a curved wall is not very noticeable, then you can safely attach the product. Otherwise, if you install a decorative corner on a strongly curved wall, then after a while a gap is formed due to a significant difference in the size of the corner.

Installation of decorative corners does not require special knowledge; even a beginner who does not have sufficient knowledge can perform it. Since this product should be fixed only after the final processing of the walls, the process is greatly facilitated.

Installation instructions

For the installation of self-adhesive corners, the same sequence of actions is applicable, with the exception of point 1 (applying glue to the surface of the corner).

Instead of plastic decorative corners, MDF products covered with a plastic film can be used, and, as noted earlier, decoration with decorative stone is possible. All of these materials can also protect wall corners from rubbing and damage. Photos of the corners in the design of which these materials were used can be found on Internet resources.

Decorative corners made of MDF, thanks to a wide selection of colors, can become a great decoration for any room. You can also fix them to the walls using special adhesives, sealants or liquid nails (on the packaging of the selected medium, MDF should be in the list of materials with which the glue interacts). Like any other decorative corners, such products can be used not only to decorate walls, window and door spans, but also serve as decoration and protection for other interior items.

Many designers prefer not to leave the corners in the apartment untreated and add to the interior unusual solutions for this part of the apartment. This applies to walls, ceilings, doorways, window slopes, etc. But in order to give the lines a finished look and protect them from deformation, they use protective plastic corners that are easy to install, have durability, practicality and an acceptable price.

    Show all

    Plastic profiles to protect external wall corners

    Perforated metal or plastic corners are used even at the stage of plastering and leveling walls and ceilings using drywall. Profile options are installed to strengthen the finishing layer of putty and to give the joints and lines in two planes an ideal geometric shape. With these materials, it is easy to align, at least visually, external and inner corners even on the most uneven surfaces.

    This material for finishing the outer corners of walls has a number of advantages, among which experts highlight such as:

    • Reliable protection. No matter how carefully you treat the decorative finish in your apartment, without using these plastic parts after a few months, scuffs, scratches, chips and other traces appear at the joints of the walls. Especially if there are pets in the room.
    • Elimination of gaps and gaps. The plastic corner does an excellent job of solving the problem on any curved surfaces between wall panels.
    • Improving appearance. The variety of options and colors allows you to transform the decor of the room and give it a finished and beautiful shape.

    But not only are plastic corners used on the outer sides, they are also used to protect internal joints to hide the visible transition from different types of finishes, for example, drywall or MDF panels with wallpaper and wall plates.

    Plastic corner - features of production and use

    When sealing corner joints and irregularities on walls and ceilings, profiles made of silicone, polystyrene, polyurethane or polyvinyl chloride are used. Last PVC option remains the most popular and in demand due to its versatility and practicality. Such species are not used only as "flats". When it is necessary to close the outer line of the window opening, metal analogs or MDF panels are better suited for this.

    Otherwise, the popularity of the PVC corner is due to its good flexibility, durability, ease of installation and adhesion of the material with different kinds glue. Another plus is the affordable price, which is why the finishing corner is used if necessary to decorate large premises.

    According to the shape, on which the specific area of \u200b\u200bapplication depends, the following options for plastic corners are distinguished:

    • L-shaped and T-shaped. They are used for sealing joints, cracks, seams and creating an even edge and angle between slabs or panels of different types.
    • Standard (P-profile). Designed for decorating window slopes, arches, interior openings etc.
    • F-shaped. Used as a material for arranging slopes to close the joints of PVC panels and walls.

    Corners are available in several sizes and in almost any color, wood grain, a natural stone and so on, depending on the specific conditions and tasks for finishing. For installation on transitions between wallpaper and decorative plaster the smallest corner of 10x10 mm is enough. For others internal works use materials with dimensions 20x20 or 25x25, which are considered universal. Large types (50x50 mm) are used mainly for finishing external arches and the facade of a building.

    Finishing slopes and bathroom

    One of the areas of application of the PVC corner in repair and construction is the sealing of door and window slopes. This material is ideal for covering outside corners. The traditional technology for the manufacture of slopes involves the use of drywall and plaster with the obligatory reinforcement of special metal profile with perforation.

    It allows you to create perfectly flat surfaces and geometrically align the planes, but after the final finishing, the open edge remains unprotected and here a plastic corner comes to the rescue.

    They cover the ends of the facing panels and other external joints, as well as the lines of intersection of the window sill and walls. Dimensions are chosen based on the width and height of the window opening.

    Such a corner is indispensable when decorating a bathroom with tiles laid out on the walls. The L-shaped profile is used to close the seam between the bathroom and the wall. Due to its properties, polyvinyl chloride is ideal for a humid atmosphere and warns against the appearance of fungus at the joints and water spillage.

    Corners are also used to close cracks and joints on the entrance and interior doorways, especially when used in the decoration of lining, PVC or MDF panels.

    Using "arched" corners in the room decor

    The arched version of the doorway is becoming more and more popular, as it gives the room a solid look and frees up real and visual space. Internal arches are most often made from metal frame with drywall or from wall foam blocks with a special layout.

    In this case, joints and corner transitions from slopes to drywall are closed with a decorative plastic profile. To do this, the corner must be bent correctly so that it does not crack or break. Therefore, when improving arched corners, use a special plastic profile or cut the usual into small segments of 25-30 cm.

    For arches, a corner of an unequal version with a size of 17x5 mm is ideal. It bends without distortions and fits well on the glue base, without peeling off the edge of the wall. With a small radius of the arc, "hot" bending of the profile is used. To do this, as it is being installed, it is heated with a construction hairdryer to a temperature of 60-70 degrees and rolled against the wall with a soft paint roller.

    The very process of installing plastic corners is simple. The course of work is no different from sticking skirting boards or polyurethane glazing beads. The main thing is to properly prepare the material and handle it as carefully as possible so as not to scratch or damage it.

    When gluing slopes, first measure the length of the profile for each slope corner. Most often they have a rectangular shape, which means that all the joints are made at right angles and the joint line is cut at 45 degrees. For arches or multifaceted vaults, the angle of the cut is determined locally.

    After taking measurements, proceed to the correct cutting. To do this, use a sharp knife or well-sharpened scissors. If there are no such tools, then use an ordinary hacksaw for metal and a ruler for an even cut. All burrs and irregularities are processed with fine-grained sandpaper. Next, a preliminary measurement is performed. The workpieces are installed in place of gluing and aligned to the building level and pre-fixed with masking tape in several places.

    After that, it becomes clear how correctly the corner cut of the product was carried out at the junction of the two profiles. Sometimes it happens that a gap appears on the joint line (1-3 mm), especially for those who work with this material for the first time. To avoid this, an allowance of 2-3 millimeters is allowed to the initial measurements, and the excess is erased using the same sandpaper.

    Sizing process and selection of suitable material

    Before proceeding to the final stage of installing the plastic corner, you must choose the right glue. In hardware stores, they offer compounds called "liquid nails", and some craftsmen also use them. But this tool cannot be called universal, it is suitable only for fixing thin and small profiles on a flat wall surface.

    To close slopes or gaps between the tile and the bathroom, it is better to use liquid silicone in complex arches and transitions from one material to another. It can be classic, transparent or colored, mostly white. Silicone does not shrink, does not run off, unlike liquid nails and ordinary glue, which tend to chip and crumble over time.

    This is especially true for places with a high level of vibration, in doorways, window slopes. In the bathroom, silicone will not only securely fix the corner, but will also serve as an additional gasket against water ingress and the formation of fungus due to constant humidity.

    The technology of the sticker is simple. Silicone is applied to the inner surface of the profile along the entire length. If glue and appropriate formulations are used, then they are squeezed out of the tube pointwise, at a distance of 10-15 cm from each other. You should not cover the entire corner with glue, it will be impossible to press it evenly, and the remnants of the glue will stain the surrounding finish, and it will be problematic to remove them later.

    The corner is installed in place of gluing and gently pressed, and then set as evenly as possible according to the building level and ruler. Additionally, they fix it with several pieces of scotch tape or electrical tape so that it does not change its position. The squeezed out glue residues are removed with a wet rag or paper towel, when working with silicone, the excess is removed after setting and drying with a clerical knife.

    When joining a horizontal and vertical profile, a long bar is installed first, followed by an upper one. It is also glued, but it is imperative that a small amount of adhesive is applied to the corners of the joint and then the slats are allowed to fully grasp, usually it takes 15-20 minutes.

    Plastic corner is used not only for decorating indoor space, but also in the outdoor version, at summer cottages, a bathhouse, wooden house from a bar with clapboard, on panel facades, etc. The material gives the structure completeness and additionally protects the tree from excessive moisture and other climatic influences. Reasonable price, durability and variety of shapes and colors make the plastic corner an irreplaceable and reliable interior detail.
