When it comes to the fence of the estate, the board is most often moved to the last plan. This material is considered by many to be temporary and not a creative option.

However, in last years the construction of plank fences has changed significantly. From primitive "ladders" they turned into masterpieces of wooden architecture. A great appearance, ease of installation and minimal cost attract the attention of many owners of suburban housing to them.

In this article, we bring to your attention an overview of modern board fences and practical advice for their manufacture. We hope that after familiarizing yourself with the options presented, you will change your mind and build a beautiful and practical board fence in the country with your own hands.

Board fence options

In order to install a wooden fence, you do not need to strain your imagination and test your design talents. Dozens of interesting types of fences have already been built and captured in the photo.

The simplest option is a horizontal slab fence. Its cost is minimal and its aesthetic qualities are high. Before installation, the slab must be refined by grinding, tinted with firing and opened with varnish. Otherwise, its external will evoke an association with a pasture for cattle.

One more tip. Wooden fence from unedged boards look perfect with wooden buildings... In the photo below white color the walls of the mansion and the columns of the entrance group do not fit well with the wooden fence.

Slab fence - simple, inexpensive and aesthetically pleasing

In the construction under consideration, the girders of the boards are fixed between two wooden posts. An inclined bar protects the ends of the racks from rain. The most vulnerable point is that the contact between wood and concrete requires high-quality insulation. Here you need to use modern antiseptic impregnation or coating with hot bitumen.

The croaker looks very nice in the fence, peeled from the bark and installed with an overlap. It is nailed to wooden posts. In front, the joint is covered by an edged board. An easy-to-manufacture canopy of planks crowns the structure.

Another interesting option - "artificial" croaker. In this case, the edges of the boards are trimmed so that they form a symmetrical pattern.

To create a color contrast, the wooden posts on the posts are treated with a dark stain.

The "decorative turn" method is equally acceptable for both the slab and the edged board. In the latter case, we get an aesthetic shutter fence. He looks deaf when viewed directly. However, due to the gaps between the slats, such a structure is not only well ventilated, but also partially transmits the sun's rays.

Climbing plants love these fences and quickly turn them into flowering trellises.

Fragment of the construction of a fence-blinds made of edged boards

We note in passing that best base for fastening fence boards - metal posts. A compromise option is the embedding of steel clips in concrete from cuttings of a profile pipe. Wooden racks are inserted into them and fixed with self-tapping screws.

A little imagination and a nondescript croaker-obapol turns into a designer picket fence guarding the "kingdom of Berendey".

The posts for such a fence can be cut from cheap round timber. The natural shape of this material fits perfectly into the "country design" chosen for this fence.

The classic picket fence (planed board with a rounded edge) remains an actual element of the fence structure. The only condition is not to paint it with dull green or brown paint. Better to treat the planks with an antiseptic and open a couple of times with a good varnish. After such finishing, the wood will sparkle with golden hues and will stand for 10 years longer.

If you prefer tinted wood, then use a dark brown paint for this purpose. It will reliably protect the picket fence from dampness and give it a noble look.

A blind edged board fence looks better when the vertical planks are installed not on one, but on both sides with an overlap. This editing scheme creates a rhythmic step structure. The ends of the boards are covered from above with a planed bar. A decorative framing belt is also mounted at the bottom of the fence.

A deaf fence will not look boring if arched lattices from a thin strip are introduced into its design scheme.

Arched lattice inserts eliminate the monotony of a blind fence

When choosing material for the fence, pay attention to the decking. It is strong, expressive and durable. Attach it to metal posts installed in a concrete foundation.

The photo below shows an option for double-sided horizontal mounting decking (American fence). To increase the rigidity in the middle of the spans, there are vertical bars.

Decking fence - 50 years warranty

Such a fence cannot be called cheap, but it is very durable and beautiful. Terrace board is made of colored wood-polymer composite and does not need painting.

In a fence construction, the board can be combined with a bar. Below we see a variant of the fence, in which the timber is installed on the outside, and the board is nailed from the inside. Its joints are not visible, since they are covered by a beam. The brown tinted wood in contrast with the white plinth gives the structure a solid and solid look.

From the facade, this fence is made solid. On the side there is no fence at the bottom of the board. This decision was made to improve the ventilation of the site.

Russia is far from America, but the romance of cowboy ranches has reached us. On a spacious site, remote from other buildings, a low country-style fence looks great. Its base is thick wooden pillars, to which three plank belts are nailed horizontally on one side. In the upper part, a wooden plank is allowed in a crosswise manner, closing the open "windows" of the sections.

Wicker fences from a board

If someone tells you that you can make fences from the board, do not hesitate. This is the trendiest topic today. The wicker fence from the boards looks great, and there are many options for its installation.

The wicker fence board should not be very thick. Therefore, having bought an edged "thirty" in the warehouse, you can safely stitch it on both sides to a thickness of 25 mm. The optimal plank width is from 8 to 10 cm.

The simplest version of such a fence resembles the wall of a summer gazebo. Having made openwork panels from wooden lamellas, they are attached to the posts. For contrast, you can nail a frame from a dark board along the contour.

A plank fence with a diamond pattern is elegant and light

The wooden fence post is antiseptic and concreted in the ground

And here is another, no less interesting plank wicker.

Here, a thin planed board 25 mm thick and 2.5 meters long is staggered to the posts. The bend gives it original way installation: the ends of the boards are alternately fastened on one and the other side of the wooden rack. In the middle part of the span there is a vertical rail that fixes the bend. The attachment points of the boards to the racks are covered with slats.

Vertical weaving from boards looks no worse. In this case, the answer to the question of which board is better to use for the fence is obvious: at a length of 2 meters, the strip is easiest to bend, no more than 16 mm thick and 8 cm wide.

A wicker fence is good for everyone, but it can also be improved by combining it with a picket fence.

Such a design is rather difficult to install, but its picturesque appearance justifies all the efforts expended.

The original version of the fence, combining weaving from boards with double-sided installation picket fence

Those wishing to build an exclusive fence made of boards should contact experienced master... Only he will be able to assemble the structure captured in this photograph.

Each board for such a fence is cut separately, based on the section template. At its ends and side faces, connecting spikes are cut, with which the boards are connected to each other according to the principle of puzzles, attached to the posts and to the lower belt.

The tips that we gave along the way should be supplemented with the parameters of the main elements of the board fence:

 • The cross-sectional size of wooden posts is 10x10 cm.
 • In case of use for racks steel profile its cross-section must be at least 40x40 mm (wall 2 mm).
 • Horizontal beams (purlins) must have a cross-section of at least 30x50 mm with a rack spacing of 2 meters.
 • For the convenience of installing wooden purlins, fastening plates "ears" with holes drilled into them for self-tapping screws must be welded to the steel posts.

At the stage of purchasing materials, the question arises of how to calculate how many boards are needed for the fence. It is solved simply. If the fence is solid, then its total length must be multiplied by the height and thickness of the purchased board.

For a lattice fence made of a picket fence, the calculation is done differently. Taking into account the chosen step of the slats, their number is determined by 1 running meter fencing. The resulting pieces are multiplied by the total length of the fence, and, if necessary, converted to cubic meters, multiplying the total area by the thickness of one strip.

Another important point - how to paint a fence made of boards? If you save on the quality of paint, then the fence will have to be updated more often. Therefore, we recommend buying expensive paint for outdoor use. Before applying it, treat the board with hot linseed oil or antiseptic impregnation. The consumption of paint and impregnation will be minimal when applied to a planed board. Consider this nuance when choosing a material.

Given the large area of the board fence, it should be painted with a roller or spray gun. Omissions and flaws made during work are corrected with a paint brush.

Fences made of natural materials are becoming increasingly popular among summer residents. In this case, the leading positions remain behind the tree.

A fence made of a board is a simple structure that can be assembled on your own, and in the hands of craftsmen, from such ordinary raw materials, unique compositions will be obtained that will become not only protection, but also decoration of the estate.

The most reliable types of fence boards are as follows:

Edged is in the greatest demand due to the availability, ease of fasteners, the possibility of painting in any color.

Popular DIY installation methods

In order to build not just a fence that outlines the boundaries of the site and protects from prying eyes, but also an aesthetically interesting structure, it is recommended to use different assembly techniques.

Let's consider the most famous types in more detail.

Herringbone (ladder)

Refers to double-sided fences. It is also called the parquet method of installing boards. Vertical (horizontal) are mounted to the longitudinal logs, to which the boards are overlapped to each other in a vertical (horizontal) position. The result is sections with an inclined board at an angle that looks like blinds. Each element is placed next to the adjacent one with a small gap, overlapping it.

An important feature of the ladder is that the space outside of it is not visible, but the inclined openings perfectly allow air and light to pass through.

Photo: with spans from boards laid in a herringbone.

To get a horizontal herringbone you need:

 1. Start filling the section from below.
 2. Fasten the board first to the vertical supports, guide beams.
 3. Mount the next row with an overlap. There is an alternation in this order.
 4. Align the ends of the material.

To simplify the fastening process and achieve an inclined position of the elements, wooden strips are fixed to the supports according to the type of steps or a channel is substituted.

Chess

A beautiful way of installation.

A significant plus of this method is the closure of the site from the rear from prying eyes, but at the same time the territory is blown by the wind. In addition, in such a fence, both sides are front and look front.

There are two types of chess:

 1. Vertical. The boards are fastened vertically to horizontal beams. It is necessary to calculate the location of the material so that each element overlaps the previous one by ⅓.
 2. Horizontal. The mounting method is similar to the previous one. In the spans between the pillars, additional vertical supports are placed. For this, an unedged board is most often used. The boards are fixed horizontally.

In a checkerboard, the fence can be made with gaps or with a solid method.

If used as pillars shaped pipes, then metal corners must be welded to them, on which the beams must be fixed with self-tapping screws.

Do not forget about the markings - this is a guarantee of the exact location of the boards in a checkerboard pattern. Therefore, it is better to pre-designate the fixation points for each plank.

Fence

An ordinary picket fence also looks beautiful if it is painted in an original way or the top of the planks is made in a wave or rounded.

A photo:

Most simple construction fence. Edged boards are nailed to the lags or edged boards are attached to self-tapping screws, not close, but with a certain step between the elements.

Network

An unusual way of decorating a fence, when horizontal and vertical boards are alternately intertwined with each other.

No less popular is a wicker fence made of tree branches and vines. This design delineates the boundaries of the garden, flower beds, orchard. But the service life of such fences is short - up to 10 years.

Given the height of the fence, they are divided into 3 types:

 1. Up to 1 m. Horizontal braiding is used. Suitable for decorating flower beds, wells, garden paths.
 2. 1 to 1.5 m. Both types of weaving are allowed. Such a fence is divided into separate zones.
 3. Up to 2 m. Protective fence. Separates the estate from the street, the neighboring area. Both types of weaves are suitable, their combination is allowed.

With proper design, the braid will become an interesting fence for a private house.

Lattice

Refers to decorative structures... Consists of a wooden frame, in the middle of which a lattice of planks is fixed. The fence is easy to assemble with your own hands. Created in one or two rows of crossed planks.

Before purchasing material for the fence, you need to accurately calculate how many planks, boards are needed, and take at least 10% more.

It should be noted that wood goes well with metal, brick supports, forging, masonry.

Types of board arrangement

There are several types, which is why outwardly the designs have significant differences.

Vertical or horizontal

Traditional methods of fastening. The elements are fixed to the slabs with two self-tapping screws or nails at the top and bottom. The top of the material can be sheared off to form an acute angle. An alternative is to cover the sections with canopies.

Solid or through

In the first version, the boards are mounted tightly to one another, forming a solid wooden wall.

In the second, boards of the same size are attached to the logs with a certain step.

How to find out how much material is needed for the fence

For this, it is important to take into account the type of construction.

For example, in a solid fence, the total length of the fence is multiplied by the height, thickness of the material. Get the number of plank cubes required.

In the case of the picket fence, the situation is different. First, you need to calculate the number of planks per 1 running meter of the fence. The resulting figure is multiplied by the total length of the fence.

If the result is needed in cubic meters, then the area of the fence is multiplied by the thickness of one plank.

The design will be more attractive if the width of the gap between the planks is equal to the width of the plank itself.

Installation diagram of a fence from a board on pillars from a metal profile

The generally accepted height of the fence ranges from 1.5 to 2.5 m.

When erecting a fence on your own, it is worth considering a few subtleties:

 1. Vertical posts are installed with a step of 2.5 - 3 m.
 2. The evenness of the attached elements must be checked with a level.
 3. To increase the support area and improve the rigidity of the structure, special shoes are attached to the supports.
 4. Before assembly, all wood needs to be pretreated with antiseptics, fire retardants and other protective agents.
 5. Only carefully dried raw materials can be dyed.
 6. There are many oil-based paints and varnishes on sale. It is not recommended to buy them, as they quickly crack under the influence external factors.
 7. If nails are used for fasteners, then they should be taken with a galvanized coating, which is not susceptible to corrosion.

If you want to keep the natural look of the wood, you can soak the boards with wood stain, wax or varnish.

Photo gallery

In our photo gallery you will find many ways to design wooden fences that fit different styles landscape design.

What option to choose a fence, whether to make it yourself or order an assembly from specialists is up to you. The main thing is that the resulting structure becomes a strong protection and decoration of the site.

You can fence your site using different materials, but the most colorful and appropriate outside the city has always been a wooden fence.

At first glance, this structure seems quite simple, however, if you take up construction without knowing some of the subtleties, it is unlikely to turn out to be durable.

From this article you will learn what wood fences are and how to work on the construction of such a structure.

A wooden fence consists of many elements that can be positioned in completely different ways. At the same time, wood is extremely easy to process, so at home it can be given any shape.

Both of these circumstances lead to a huge variety of fence designs, of which the most popular are:

 1. Wattle: the second name is a wicker fence. Thin stakes are dug into the ground at regular intervals, which are braided by horizontally arranged flexible thin rods. There are no straight lines and clear geometry, nevertheless, we can say that the decorative properties of this fence are most pronounced - it is firmly associated with antiquity and national traditions. Wicker is extremely simple to make, but you should be prepared for the fact that of all types of wooden fence, it is the least durable.
 2. Ranch: although this design is called in a Western manner, it was not borrowed at all. We have used such fences for a long time where functionality is at the forefront - for fencing pastures, vegetable gardens, orchards, etc. Like a wattle fence, a ranch fence is made without any difficulties: to wooden beams just nail in a few long poles or planks.
 3. Palisade: this type of wooden fence is solid, that is, at a sufficient height, it completely hides the fenced area from the views of those walking along the street. It is built like this: one to one logs or boards burst into the ground, the tops of which are sharpened at an angle of about 90 degrees. As you can see, getting over such a fence is much more difficult than over a wattle fence or a ranch, but the material consumption turns out to be impressive - not only because of the location of all the elements close to each other, but also because a significant part of them is in the ground.
 4. Lattice: openwork design, due to its aesthetic advantages, is incredibly popular. Most often, slats or narrow boards are not crossed at a right angle, as in a conventional lattice, but with a slope - this is more interesting. The lattice fence is successfully used not only for fencing the territory, but also for highlighting individual zones within it, for example, flower beds.
 5. Fence.

The last option is the most "popular" one known to everyone.

Ranch style fence

The picket fence owes its popularity to the following important qualities:

 • quick and easy to build;
 • is not unnecessarily material-intensive;
 • thanks to its even and neat "combed hair" it looks very good.

The design is as follows: racks are driven into the ground, to which two horizontal threads or veins are nailed; then vertically narrow boards with pointed tops - picket fences - are nailed to these threads with a certain pitch. Pickets are installed with a fairly wide clearance, which is the reason for the economy of this fence.

Suburban real estate owners often prefer wooden fences. - simple, eco-friendly and eye-pleasing design.

We will consider the types of fences made of unedged boards.

Installation technology

There can be differences in technology as well. They consist in the method of constructing the underground part, that is, the foundation.

There are two options:

 1. The fence is being built without a foundation.
 2. The foundation is laid at the base.

The first method is the cheapest, in which the racks made of timber or steel pipes are buried directly into the ground.

Building a fence on a foundation is more expensive, but it also looks more presentable.

Stages of installation of wooden fences

In our high-tech era with its metal-plastic-glass dominance, everything that reminds of the real natural nature, especially dear to the heart. Therefore, probably the country style in landscape design especially in demand today. The classic wooden picket fence not only fits well into it, but, perhaps, can even be considered an integral part of this style.

The construction of such a fence will be quite within the power of even a beginner, and at the same time it does not need any intricate decorations, since without them it is completely self-sufficient.

Installation diagram of a wooden fence with metal pillars

What should be done by someone who wants to erect a more complex fence? First of all, you need to choose the right material. It is best to use blanks from solid wood species - oak, aspen, acacia, mulberry, ash, Siberian larch. The latter is famous for its special durability, since it is very resistant to moisture.

Birch wood is the least dense, so you should not make a fence from it - parts will often have to be changed. It is also undesirable to use pine or spruce, which are known for their softness.

The wood must be carefully inspected for rotten places or affected by fungus. Further, all the blanks should be thoroughly impregnated with any modern antiseptic.

Highly reliable impregnation for wood - the so-called Swedish paint - you can prepare yourself.

This is what it consists of:

 • red iron: 260 g;
 • iron vitriol: 260 g;
 • table salt: 260 g;
 • rye flour: 580 g;
 • drying oil (can be replaced linseed oil): 240 g;
 • water: 4.5 l.

Prepare like this:

 1. A paste is cooked from flour and 3 liters of water.
 2. The finished mixture is passed through a sieve to remove lumps.
 3. The refined paste is returned to the fire and salt and ferrous sulfate are immediately added to it.
 4. With constant stirring, a little drying oil is added to the mixture, then water. The cooking process should be continued until the ferrous sulfate is completely dissolved.

The result is a golden mixture. If this color does not suit you, you can use manganese peroxide or ocher instead of red lead. You need to use this impregnation in such an amount that for 1 sq. m of the surface took about 200 - 300 ml.

If you don't have enough time to spare, look for stock that has already been cut and processed.

Also on preparatory stage it is necessary to determine the height of the future fence.

A "transparent" fence is made about 1.5 m high, a solid one - taller than human height, up to 2.5 m.

Step-by-step instructions for installing a wooden fence

When building a fence, you need to act as follows:

 1. Garbage and vegetation growing there are removed at the site of the future fence.
 2. Wooden pegs or steel pins are driven in at the corners of the fenced area, after which a nylon cord, fishing line or twine is pulled between them.
 3. We set pegs along the stretched line, indicating the position of the gate posts and wickets.
 4. Now you need to figure out how long the sections should have, so that their whole number fits into the gaps between the already installed pegs. The length of the sections on different sides of the fence, for example, on the east and south, may differ, but not much so that the observer sees them as completely the same.
 5. Having decided on the length of the sections (preferably no more than 2 m), pegs are placed to indicate the location of the intermediate racks.
 6. In the place where the pegs are installed, recesses for the racks are dug. The soil should be selected to a freezing depth (but not less than 0.5 m), the value of which for a given latitude can be viewed in the SNiP on building climatology. If the depth is less, the heaving forces in the freezing soil will gradually squeeze out the rack. Excavations are most conveniently done with a garden drill.
 7. At the bottom of the recesses, a sand cushion with a thickness of 120 mm is arranged, after which they begin to install the racks. The deepened part of each rack, if it is made of wood, must be protected from the effects of ground moisture by wrapping in roofing material (shot with a construction stapler) or coating with a thick layer bituminous mastic... It is also useful to burn wood in this place to prevent possible rotting.
 8. First you need to adjust the height of the corner posts. They are installed vertically in the pit, propped up with wooden wedges or pieces of brick, after which a tightly stretched rope is tied to the heads. Now you need to step back some distance and see if the rope is parallel to horizontal lines in the structure of the house, for example, a roof overhang or horizontal elements window frames... If the rope is obliquely relative to these landmarks, you need to raise or lower one of the posts by changing the thickness of the sand cushion located under it.

It makes no sense to achieve a strictly horizontal position of the rope using a water level, since it is the visual correspondence of the fence to the house or other elements located on the site that matters.

Installation diagram of boards

Having set the racks in height, they are brought into a strictly vertical position (here it is already necessary to use the building level) and the pits are filled with a mixture of sand and soil with layer-by-layer ramming or concreted.

In the same way, intermediate racks are installed, preliminarily set along a stretched rope.

If the fence is supposed to be made especially high, it is advisable to make the buried part of the posts heavier by attaching several steel plates to it.

Further, two horizontal beams are attached to the racks - one at the top, the second at the bottom. These will be veins, to which we will subsequently attach the pickets. Of course, they must be parallel to the stretched rope.

Timber fence

If sections of steel pipes are used as racks, then brackets must be welded to them to attach the veins

It remains to nail sharpened pickets to the veins with an equal pitch. The line formed by their tops should be parallel to the stretched rope landmark.

A wooden fence is an economical and at the same time durable fence option. associated with some nuances that you need to know about before starting construction.

Palisade, wattle, slab fence - there are many options for wood fences. It will help you to decide on the type of construction.

Care

At least once every two years, and preferably annually, the fence must be painted or varnished. It is best to use a yacht varnish - it provides the best protection.

If you want to give the fence an unusual look, paint the pickets in different bright colors - then it will look like a picket fence made of colored pencils.

Another interesting option is to use white and black paint to make the fence look like a piano keyboard.

It should be remembered that the board or timber is most vulnerable in the place where the cut is made across the fibers. Here, the paint must be applied especially carefully and generously.

If somewhere the processing was not carried out in a timely manner and the wood began to rot, the damaged area must be cut out. Next, a galvanized steel plate is fixed at this place.

If, for the same reason, any of the steel elements begins to rust, it should be treated with a rust-converting compound. If corrosion has severely destroyed the material, the element must be replaced.

In case of loosening of any of the pillars, you need to dig a hole next to it and see if the wood has rotted. If not, proceed as follows:

 • the pillar is propped up with props;
 • dig it to a depth of 20 cm;
 • a brick fight is poured into the recess and concrete is poured on top.

Concrete gains sufficient strength in a few days - then it will be possible to dismantle the supports.

If the check revealed rotting of the support, you need to get to the bottom of it, cut out the damaged area and install a column of concrete or brick instead.

The cost

If you order the construction of a picket fence with a gap between pickets of 20 mm and a length of 30 to 100 m to a specialized company, then for 1 lm. you will have to pay the following prices:

 • at a height of 1.5 m: 1140 rubles;
 • at 1.8 m: 1220 rubles.;
 • at 2 m: 1280 rub.

If the length is more than 100 m, a discount is provided and 1 lm. will cost, respectively, 1070 rubles., 1150 rubles., 1200 rubles.

A solid wooden fence of the same height will cost 1280 rubles, 1360 rubles. and 1410 rubles. for 1 lm with a length of 30 to 100 m and 1180 rubles., 1260 rubles. and 1310 rubles. for 1 r.m. with a length over 100 m.

Video on the topic

There is plenty of space in the construction market now. What materials for fences are not sold. Can be built stone wall with forged ornate patterns or a solid brick fence without frills, solid plastic sheets in an urban style or economical ones from corrugated board, stretch a mesh or put up metal posts. There is a rotation of trends, today they prefer one type of fencing, tomorrow - another. But there is one group that does not obey the trends of fashion. They are always in demand. These are wooden fences. About their types, pros and cons, how to make a wooden fence for a summer cottage or country house do it yourself, and many, many photos - in our article.

Types of fences made of wood

A wooden fence around a residential building or in the country, especially made by hand, is a matter of special pride for the owner. The degree of involvement in the process of its construction can be different: from the installation of finished processed elements to the independent sawing of trees, wood processing, and so on.

Before going to a construction hypermarket for shopping or in the forest with an ax, you need to decide on the type of fence that will be built. They are different.

The first classification divides the types of fences depending on their functional purpose. They are being built for:

 • designation of territorial boundaries;
 • penetration protection uninvited guestsincluding animals;
 • ensuring isolation from the attention of passers-by and neighbors;
 • limiting noise, wind, dirt, dust and similar interference;
 • fencing of dangerous areas - ravines, steep slopes of reservoirs, highways and others;
 • landscape decoration.

Depending on the functions performed, the fence is built:

 • deaf;
 • transparent (mesh or lattice);
 • combined.

According to the construction technology, fences are distinguished on a foundation and without it.

When choosing, one should take into account the general style of the site, the fence should organically fit into its design and be combined with buildings. Let's consider the types of hedges from the point of view of design in more detail.

Picket fence is the most popular type of wooden fence

The basis for such a fence is a wooden plank with a straight or beveled end. The standard version is as follows: they are driven into the ground or fixed with concrete mortar support pillars, horizontal logs are attached to them, and boards are vertically screwed to them.

The organization of such a fence made of wood is considered the fastest and most economical. If you wish, you can make it yourself, and with proper care such a fence will last for many years. This explains its widespread popularity.

Another advantage of the picket fence is the ability to limit the area without shading the area. This can be achieved by mounting the picket fence not solid, but with gaps.

If a standard fence seems boring, you can decorate it, for example, by installing a grate at the top of the fence or diluting it with a solid canvas in the spans.

Another version of the described fence is horizontal fastening of lamellas. By the way, the longitudinal strips look great in the design of beds, shelves, benches, and internal borders.

Palisade - simple but reliable

A palisade is called a solid solid wooden fence, consisting of closely standing logs with pointed tops. Such fences are very strong, impressive, they are difficult to overcome and break, they provide reliable sound insulation.

The palisade can be made by yourself. For this, the processed stakes are sharpened at an angle of 40 degrees and set in a tight row. Of course, a lot of wood will be required for construction.

The described fence will stand for a long time, but it will not last forever. Due to the fact that during its installation, pouring of the foundation is not provided, over time, the logs loosen and settle.

If the owner has a liking for picket fences, but at the same time their inherent massiveness is not needed, it is suggested to opt for a bamboo picket fence. This fence is also made of wood; it will give the estate a touch of exoticism.

Lattice or beautiful perforated wooden fence

The sheathing of a lattice fence consists of strips (usually of the same width), crossed vertically and horizontally or at an angle of 45 degrees. They can be mounted side by side or with a gap, at equal distances or in groups, using strips painted in different colors and treated with varnishes, creating an original ornament.

This beautiful fence made of wood looks like an openwork pattern. True, there is no need to talk about outstanding strength. As a rule, this type is chosen for the tasks of interior zoning and decoration.

Often decorative lattice fences made of wood are used as a support for climbing plants and flowers. The result is something like a living wall or panel. Another way to emphasize the elegance of such fences is to decorate wickets and gates with pergolas, arches, columns, awnings in the same style.

It is not difficult to make such fences made of wood with your own hands.

This is the name of a complicated type of picket fence, when the strips are attached alternately from the outer and inner sides of the frame, that is, in a checkerboard pattern. The arrangement of the pickets can be deaf (close or overlapped) and blown if left between the elements small space... Offset can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal. Such a board fence looks more elegant than a regular one.

The description may sound confusing, but the order of collecting a "chessboard" is no more complicated than a standard picket fence. It is only important to observe the order of fixing the strips.

Ranch - not only American style

When the name sounds like this, the imagination immediately draws a picture of a spacious fenced pasture with cows walking along it and a brave prancing cowboy on a horse, wearing a hat and with pistols. Nevertheless, fences of this type have long been used in our area. As a rule, they are used to outline the boundaries of vegetable gardens, orchards, and areas for grazing livestock. Sometimes the ranch serves as a decorative fence.

Structurally, a "ranch" -type fence is a support with several large horizontal and sometimes diagonal lags.

When building fences of this type, the strips are attached to the frame with a gap or overlap at a given angle relative to the vertical or horizontal planes. The inclination of the casing elements is ensured by the calibrated overlays.

It is not difficult to build such a fence yourself. The procedure is standard. First, the support pillars are installed, then the wooden lining. Usually, channels are used as the basis for fastening, making it easier to maintain the same angle of inclination. It is important not to forget about the cushioning material between the boards, which will provide sufficient ventilation and, therefore, protection from decay.

Blinds as a kind of wooden fence

Fences made in the form of "blinds" look very unusual. Boards are laid horizontally with a downward slope. The result is a ventilated, unseen fence. The distance between the planks may vary.

The standard design of such fences involves the organization of a local or strip foundation, and grooves are formed in the supports strengthened in this way. Bars are inserted into these holes, preferably of equal width (as an option, fence boards). Another option for attaching the beams is to vertical crossbars. An alternative name for such fences is "cross".

Wicker wooden fences

"Braid" is a structure in which branches of a vine or thin wooden planks bend around vertical or horizontal logs. Such a fence looks authentic, it is used when decorating a semi-antique site. Despite the apparent simplicity, making such a wooden fence is not an easy task.

Another misleading impression is fragility. The fact is that the cladding elements are attached in a curved position, and, striving for straightening, they will fit quite tightly to the frame.

Basic requirements for fences

In order for wooden fences, curbs and other fences to be strong, reliable and stand for many years, it is necessary to adhere to the following structural requirements for their construction.

 1. The maximum section length is 2.5 m. This is due to the fact that wood does not belong to light materials, therefore non-observance of this recommendation will lead to an increased load on the supporting frame and sagging of the structure.
 2. The installation depth of the support pillars should be equal to the depth of soil freezing in the region (usually 80-120 cm). In this case, the size of the underground part of the support should be at least a quarter of its total length. It is also important to take into account the water table, soil characteristics and other factors that can affect soil properties in the off-season.
 3. The supporting posts located at the corners of the perimeter and which are the basis for the gates and wickets should be thicker.
 4. The distance between the bottom line of the canvas and the ground surface must be at least 15 cm.
 5. Support pillars should rise above the upper border of the fence sheathing by at least 10 cm.

Wooden fencing: pros and cons

Wood is a raw material traditionally used to build a fence. Despite the saturated market of building materials, which includes both classic metal, brick and stone, and modern euro bars, corrugated board and polycarbonate, the demand for wood is steadily high. This is due not so much to habit as to the outstanding virtues of wooden hedges. They differ:

 • environmental friendliness;
 • attractiveness and originality;
 • variability of colors and textures;
 • ease of processing;
 • ease of installation;
 • the ability to quickly replace worn out structural elements;
 • cheapness and availability.

The tree goes well with most building materials and harmoniously fits into the design of any site. Such a fence can easily be built alone; special knowledge and skills are not required for this. The cost price of wooden fences is lower than that of popular brick, stone or metal, and the installation process is much easier and faster. The main unique advantage of these fences is due to the natural wealth, which gives a variety of textures and shades of wood for decoration.

It would be wrong if the disadvantages of the fences in question are not listed. There are few of them, but it is important to consider them when choosing a material:

 • a tendency to ignite;
 • dependence on climatic factors;
 • vulnerability to harmful insects;
 • the likelihood of the development of putrefactive processes;
 • limited service life (on average, 10 years).

Some of the listed disadvantages can be successfully stopped by treating boards, beams, logs with an antiseptic, fire retardant or a special pest control agent. To limit the effect of moisture, the upper ends are covered with protective strips and plugs, and the lower edge is not below the recommended level. For the same purpose, it is important to regularly get rid of vegetation in contact with the canvas.

How to make a wooden fence

So, the decision has been made. A wooden fence will be built. Where do you start? Like any serious event, the first stage is design. It is better if there is a cadastral plan of the site with precisely marked boundaries. The perimeter value indicated in this document is the main reference point. To facilitate the work, it is recommended to transfer the plot diagram, observing the scale, on paper.

Now you can start marking. This will require pegs, twine, and a hammer. First of all, the stakes indicate the location of the corner supports, after which a rope is pulled between them. Next, marks are driven in, indicating the location points of the gate, wicket and all support pillars. After the end of all manipulations, the results are transferred to the schematic drawing.

What tools will be needed

The following materials will be used to build an ordinary wooden fence with your own hands:

 • boards, picket fence, beams or others, in accordance with the project;
 • support posts or materials for their construction (metal, brick, concrete, wood);
 • transverse boards or pipes;
 • cement, crushed stone, bituminous mastic;
 • fasteners (screws, nails, bolts, and so on).

You should take care of the full arsenal of construction tools in advance, which includes:

 • shovel, crowbar, earth drill;
 • tools for working with wood - an ax, a jigsaw, a hacksaw, a plane, an emery;
 • saw with discs cutting for metal;
 • electric drill with sets of drills for wood and metal, screwdriver;
 • welding machine;
 • building level, plumb line, tape measure, twine;
 • hammer, pliers, screwdrivers, wrenches;
 • brushes for painting and coating with protective agents.

The choice of wood species and its processing

The choice of wood species is made based on the planned functionality of the fence and decorative considerations.

The most popular raw material for the construction of protective structures is from conifers (pine, spruce, cedar). Cedar has high strength, expressive texture, but it belongs to rare and therefore expensive materials.

Pine and spruce are the most popular building materials. Their structure is saturated with resins that successfully resist the spread of rot and fungus. The moisture index of pine and spruce blanks is 15-20%, which corresponds to optimal value use of materials in the open air. The density of spruce is lower than that of pine, therefore it is easier to process, but the knotty is higher, which indicates an increased percentage of waste. Both breeds are prone to cracking.

Less durable, but more beautiful, especially after correct processing, are considered hardwood - ash, beech, oak, birch, aspen, alder, mulberry, acacia, Siberian larch. The strongest fences are obtained from Siberian larch. Despite the fact that the main enemy of most wood species is moisture, when in contact with water, this material becomes even harder. But birch has the lowest density, which means that the service life of products from it is shorter. Wooden fences made of oak for a private house are rare, since the raw materials are not cheap. Nevertheless, oak is more often used in interior decoration.

The vulnerability of wood is associated with fluctuations in humidity: at high humidity it swells and is affected by mold, at low humidity it dries and cracks. To extend the service life of the fence, the wood must be pre-treated with an antiseptic compound, which will increase its resistance to moisture, mold, and impregnation with a UV hardener - to protect it from ultraviolet radiation.

Fence construction technology

Wooden fences can be built with or without foundations. In the first case, a trench is pulled out along the entire perimeter and a strip, that is, solid, foundation is poured. The second option involves digging holes under the support pillars in the places of their installation. Such local holes are also concreted or filled up.

There are technologies for building a fence with or without a base. The base, as a rule, repeats the material of the pillars and is made of brick, stone or concrete.

Consider the procedure for building the simplest fence from wooden picket fence on a local foundation.

Installation of supports and assembly of the frame

The universal algorithm for the construction of any fence is as follows.

 1. Installation of supports, if necessary, pouring the foundation.
 2. Installation of lag.
 3. Fastening the sheathing.

Start over. In the places where marking pegs are installed, holes are drilled or dug out with a diameter of 40-50 cm and a depth of 100-120 cm.A sand cushion is laid and compacted on the bottom, the layer thickness of which should be 10-15 cm.

A support pillar is installed exactly in the center of the fossa. If the backing option is chosen, then the pit is filled with a mixture of crushed stone with sand and compacted; if concreting, then it is poured cement mortar... The verticality of the support is strictly controlled using a plumb line or other devices.

The lags are easiest to mount on special brackets that you can make yourself or purchase in a store. If metal supports are used, then the fastening of the crossbars is best done by welding. Depending on the height of the fence and the massiveness of the sheathing, the optimal number of veins is chosen (usually 2 or 3). The frame is ready.

Final assembly and installation of wooden fences

At this stage, the frame is sheathed with pickets, boards, logs or other elements. They are attached to the logs with self-tapping screws, bolts or nails. Depending on the approved design, the planks are installed back to back or at a predetermined distance. In order not to deviate from the horizontal, nails are hammered into the upper ends of the pillars, and twine is pulled between them.

Another option for installing fence boards is to mount them on logs before installing the latter on poles. This method makes it easier to control the level of the lamellae and maintain an equal distance between them. In addition, tension from the weight of the boards on the crossbars is relieved, which provokes their sagging.

Protection and finishing: what to cover

To protect the fence from the aggressive influence of natural phenomena, it is recommended to prime the surface before painting, treat it with impregnation, antiseptic, cover with protective agents (Swedish paint, hot linseed oil, yacht varnish) and moisture-resistant varnish. It should be borne in mind that some of the listed chemicals can distort the natural color of wood.

Construction hypermarkets offer a wide range of paints. When choosing, it is necessary to pay attention not only to the desired shade, but also to the type of binder. So, oil paints are unlikely to last longer than three years, enamel ones are designed for a ten-year period. The most stable are water-dispersion dyes; they do not need to be renewed for at least 20 years. Silicate and silicone compounds have also shown themselves to be excellent.

Wooden fence color design

The most popular shade of a wooden fence is natural. Nothing beats the natural beauty of wood. Special varnishes and colorless paints can emphasize and enhance the natural pattern.

An interesting effect can be achieved by pre-firing the boards.

Often the sheathing of the fence is painted in a shade that echoes colors, in which the house or part of it is decorated, for example, balcony railings, terrace railing, columns, and so on.

Fence from natural wood this type will emphasize the magnificence of your suburban area... Such a fence is decorative and can be painted in any color at the request of the customer. The price per running meter is 1,345 rubles if it is made of spruce and pine, and 7100 rubles if it is made of more valuable larch.

The boards of this type of fence are overlapped, which means that the fence will be ideally combined with a house trimmed with siding panels. A spruce or pine two-meter version of such a wooden fence will cost the owner 1,595 rubles per running meter, the same fence, but made of larch, will cost 8,500 rubles.

This fence is in many ways similar to the previous type, however, decorative elements made of concrete give it additional solidity, improving the compatibility of the variety of this fence with stone houses... The price of a two-meter canvas per running meter will be 1,535 rubles, when made from larch - 9,500 rubles.

Few could have thought about this 100 years ago, but the modern fence from the fence for the poor peasantry has turned into a very popular fence for owners with average and higher incomes. Such a two-meter fence made of spruce or pine will cost the homeowner 1,745 rubles per linear meter. A similar option, but made of larch - 8500 rubles.

For those who want not to isolate themselves from the world, but to amaze it non-standard solutionscreated this kind of wooden fence. A light and elegant two-meter-high fence made of spruce and pine will cost 1,595 rubles per running meter. A larch fence will cost more - from 6500 rubles.

Despite the abundance modern materials, wood remains in demand in the production of such protective structures as a fence. This is due to several advantages, namely its beauty and environmental friendliness, a variety of design options, high practical qualities provided by modern developments in the field of wood protection. Thanks to them, a wooden picket fence serves for an exceptionally long time, without losing its strength characteristics under the influence of such external factors as temperature changes, humidity, exposure to ultraviolet radiation and microorganisms.

Wooden fences for summer cottages are the most the best option... If you chose required material and provide proper care, such fences can last more than 10 years. As a rule, the protective functions of wooden fences are high, in contrast to their cost. For a relatively low price, you can find a very good option.

This type of fence will hide you from prying eyes, allowing you to enjoy on your site the harmony that nature itself gave. The price of spruce and pine for one running meter will start at 1,185 rubles.
