The cornice often performs not so much its main function as a decorative one. And no wonder: designers simply could not pass by such a great option for experimentation. There are cornices various kinds, each of which is good in its own way.

What it is?

By and large, the cornice is just a crossbar on which the curtains are attached. It would seem that nothing special, but now the cornices do not just serve to hold the fabric. They are important elements that allow you to maintain the desired style of the room, decorate it, and also make the window opening a bright accent. Cornices are needed for attaching curtains to windows of different locations. It can be classic rectangular windows, ceiling, curly. Depending on the shape and purpose of the window, as well as on its location, the required type of cornice is selected.

This element is made from a variety of materials, which further affect the overall perception of the room. You can make it so that the cornice will not be visible at all. The so-called hidden models are popular lately due to the fact that they create an unusual effect. In order to choose suitable option for curtains, it is necessary to understand well the methods of fastening, types, materials from which the cornices are made. Taking into account each of these points, as well as focusing on the general style of the room, you will be able to buy a successful cornice and in the future you will never regret your purchase.

Device

How this or that model is arranged depends on its type. Below are the names of the main elements with a description:

  • Brackets or hangers to secure the base. The kit usually comes with 2 or more pieces, depending on the length of the cornice. Two brackets (suspension) are installed on the sides, and at least one supporting one is in the middle.
  • Basis for hanging curtains. Regarding the type of cornice, it can be a bar, string or profile;
  • Flerons (if provided). Basically, figured tips are installed at the ends of round rod cornices.

In some cases, the structure will consist of only one solid part, for example, a busbar when a busbar cornice is fixed to the ceiling.

Kinds

All models can be divided according to the mounting device into two large groups: ceiling and wall:

  1. Ceiling options are attached directly to the ceiling. Ceiling structures can visually increase the height of the room, make it more majestic. In combination with the large width of the cornice - from wall to wall - they create a truly solemn atmosphere in the room. Ceiling cornices are also installed in cases where it is not possible to fix wall cornices (for example, if the wall material is plasterboard or the distance between the ceiling and the window opening is too small). Ceiling options are inferior to wall-mounted ones in the ability to withstand a large weight of curtains, as well as in the choice of curtain mounting options (ceiling models, as a rule, install only two types - tire and profile).
  2. Wall options offer a wide scope for imagination. Such cornices have been popular for several years and do not plan to give up their positions. Most often, the installation of wall cornices is chosen in the presence of stretch or false ceilings. Depending on the model of curtains, only ceiling or only wall cornices are suitable for its fastening. So, Roman blinds can only be hung on wall options in order to achieve a snug fit to the window. Depending on the configuration, both ceiling and wall cornices can be presented in the following variations.

Round

Round cornices are the most traditional and familiar type. Currently, there is not only a single-row, but also a two-row round version with rods of different diameters parallel to each other. Round rods are complemented with special tips - fleurons - on each side. At first, they did not carry any decorative functions, but after some time, designers began to make them curly: in the form of flowers, petals, animal heads, and not so long ago, fleurons decorated with rhinestones and enamel appeared.

The choice of a round cornice imposes certain obligations: the fasteners of the curtains, as well as the various decor of the curtains, must be made in the same design with the tips and the rod itself. For example, when ordering curtains with eyelets, not only the eyelets themselves, but also the tiebacks of the curtains must be made in a single color scheme with a cornice and using the same materials. The cornice can be either straight or angular round. The corner is used for hanging curtains in the bathroom and is usually not involved in the decor of living quarters.

Strings

String structures look very modern and minimalist. They do not take up much space and are almost invisible, but their presence adds the necessary outrageousness to the room. The design of the string cornice is extremely simple and consists of two brackets equipped with special devices for tensioning and the string itself. It is a metal cable that can withstand a lot of weight.

The same cannot be said about the fixing devices, usually under heavy curtains they are weakened, which leads to the “sagging” of the entire structure. Most often, string cornices are used in interiors of modern styles: Hi-tech, Minimalism, Modern. In traditional interiors, they will look more than out of place.

Tire

The bus bar is a structure equipped with a special hollow in which the fastening mechanisms are installed so that the curtain slides between the two parts of the eaves. This was often installed earlier in the USSR, so most people, by inertia, choose it. The number of rows is usually limited to two, but variations are possible. This is due to the fact that it is not customary to equip tire cornices with additional pompous details such as lambrequins or gangs: the insufficiently majestic design of the cornice itself does not allow this from a stylistic point of view. But the use of light curtains in combination with a sliding thick curtain is not forbidden.

A big plus is that the curtain is attached close to the ceiling on the tire cornice, and there is practically no gap left. Therefore, busbars are chosen as ceiling mounts: this way the ceiling of the room seems even higher.

Baguette

Baguette is complemented by a carved bar. The plank not only covers the entire “stuffing” responsible for the ability to move the curtains, but also acts as a decorative element. The relatively low price of a baguette cornice allows you to choose Various types coatings: from plastic trim under the tree and ending with natural leather. Often under the bar there is a place for lighting, which gives the curtains a special charm.

Properly chosen lighting further enhances their beauty. As a rule, a conventional busbar structure is hidden under the bar, so the baguette version is a combined type.

Profile

The profile cornice is in many ways similar to the tire cornice, except that the rows of the tire cornice are separated from each other and represent, as it were, separate slats, while the profile is a single flat piece. Profile models are made of flexible materials, so that they can be installed even along the contour of a figured window. A huge advantage of profile options is just their flexibility. For example, by installing this option on the ceiling, you can round off its edges, "hiding" the unattractive appearance of the sidewalls.

Profile cornices serve as a good alternative to wall-mounted framing, as they can also be equipped with a hood - a bar with various patterns that covers the curtain fasteners. The lens hood is not a very wide element, but the possibilities for decorating it are quite large: from embossed patterns with gilding to fabric coatings. The three-row profile version is usually supplied with a stretch ceiling. It allows you to hang curtains, curtains and a soft lambrequin at the same time.

Telescopic

As the name implies, telescopic models can be folded and unfolded. Unlike ordinary tubular cornices, they do not need to be filed to fit the desired size: just fold a little. This feature allows you to use telescopic cornices not once, but in different rooms after various renovations.

Mini eaves "cafe"

The stained-glass mini-cornice is attached directly to the frame. Such models have a relatively small diameter and are usually supplied in pairs. They can be mounted both above and below, and in the middle of the window to achieve a cute rustic look of the room. The ability to protect each of the sashes individually, as well as the unusual design makes the telescopic window design option quite popular. In addition, this type of attachment can save space in the room. Often it is stained glass cornices that are installed on the sloping walls of the attic. Between a pair of such elements, you can fix the curtain fabric. For the design of the ceiling window, this design is also suitable.

Swivel

Swivel is also attached directly to each of the wings. It is usually chosen for windows that sit very "deep" in the wall and for blind windows. Curtains mounted on pivoting cornices can be opened and closed like sashes. Usually only one curtain rod is required, the curtain hangs freely on it.

Spacers

Spacer models are somewhat similar to telescopic models, with the exception of a few significant differences. The spacer cornice is a stick with a spring inside. The spring "pushes" the ends out. Thus, the installed cornice "rests" against the walls, without the need for additional support in the form of brackets. When choosing this type, you need to be more careful, since if the material of the walls is not strong enough, it can severely damage them. For example, plasterboard walls won't withstand pressure. Hanging heavy curtains on a spacer cornice is also not recommended. Despite the fact that the design is quite reliable, it will not cope with a lot of weight.

For roman blinds

Similar designs are installed directly on the window sash, allowing you to raise the curtain vertically, like blinds. Size window frame must perfectly match the size of the eaves, otherwise installation will become impossible.

Which is better?

Depending on the functional purpose rooms and whether it is residential or non-residential, its general style depends on which option should be preferred. For non-residential premises, it is better to prefer simple, reliable designs. For example, choosing the right option for the balcony, decide what effect you want to achieve. To create a cozy home environment, preference should be given to round cornices. In a room that serves as a living room or bedroom, you can choose any option, it all depends on your preferences and the style of the room. In particular, modern styles are "friends" with string or profile structures, while baguette or tubular models are suitable for more traditional ones.

The attic space is of particular interest. For roof window, located on the ceiling, you can pick up both mini-cornices "cafe", and for roller blinds. It all depends on how much you want to darken the room. Ordinary curtains will not fit as close to the glass as rolled curtains, and therefore more light will penetrate the room. There are no bad or good cornices, each of them has its own advantages. There are suitable and inappropriate designs. If you look at the choice from this point of view, it will become much easier and more enjoyable.

Accessories

Cornices are usually complemented by a variety of fittings. Mounts are of two types: bracket and suspension. Their separation is extremely conditional and depends on what exactly the structure is attached to - to the ceiling or to the wall. So, for ceiling structures, suspensions are used, and for wall structures, brackets are used. Brackets are open and closed. The open holder allows you to simply place the barbell on top of the mounts and remove it just as easily. As a rule, this type is useless for ceiling fixtures.

A closed fastener means that the rod will be threaded into it, then attached to the wall or ceiling and left straight. There is no mention of any separation. Therefore, when choosing curtain fasteners, this fact must be taken into account. There are a variety of curtain fasteners: eyelets, loops, ties, hooks, rings, magnets, and so on. The choice of each is determined by the type of cornice, as well as by the fact that it is closed or open view fasteners used. For example, the curtain on the grommets cannot be placed on a closed-type cornice, since it will not be possible to remove it for washing in the future without completely disassembling the cornice. When choosing tips, be guided not only by their attractiveness, but also by the diameter of the rod.

It is also important to remember about the general style content: choosing a plastic tip for a barbell made of noble wood, you run the risk of making an absurd duet.

materials

Cornices are made from various materials, ranging from quite expensive to the most affordable:

  • The most economical material is plastic. Plastic cornices are quite in demand today, especially ceiling ones. They do not draw attention to themselves, allowing you to place accents in the room. Such models can even be hidden behind the ceiling, creating the illusion that the curtains are not attached to anything and just float on their own. A similar solution is applicable for simple, modest interiors, but bright solutions can also be found.

  • Recently, it has been possible to glue plastic structures with special material, imitating various coatings: wood, leather, even metal. From afar, it is not clear that you have a fake in front of you, but upon closer inspection it becomes obvious. Plastic and even more so metal-plastic cornices can withstand quite a lot of weight, but when ordering, you should clarify this issue separately.

  • Wooden cornices - timeless classics, allowing to give any room a regal look. There are both tubular and baguette cornices made of wood, and both types look great. You need to be more careful when choosing a wooden baguette cornice. The design looks quite massive and is not suitable for window decoration in a small room with a low ceiling. The wooden models themselves are bright decoration rooms, so you need to plan their use at the stage of interior design planning in order to properly fit them into the environment in the future. Wooden cornices can withstand quite a lot of weight (especially wall models). They are perfectly combined with classic heavy curtains made of solid fabric like brocade, jacquard, tapestry, but they can also emphasize the beauty of light curtains.

Metal cornices are the most expensive. They are distinguished by durability, expensive appearance and a large selection of different options.

Metal structures are presented in different coatings:

  • White;
  • Black;
  • Gilded;
  • Brass;
  • Copper.

The texture can be matte or glossy: matte cornices are more suitable for modern interiors, while glossy cornices are more suitable for classic ones. However, there may be exceptions to this rule. Curly cornices are especially loved and popular. You can buy a ready-made forged cornice, or you can order an individual design. Individual models are more expensive for two reasons: they are made in an exclusive version and, as a rule, handmade. Iron cornices are heavy in themselves, so they require high-quality reliable wall fastening.

Dimensions

The length of mini-cornices depends on the width of the window sash: the cornice should be slightly narrower than the sash. The same goes for swivel and roman blinds. The diameter of the mini-cornices is approximately 1 centimeter. The diameter of iron rods varies from 10 to 40 mm depending on the purpose of the pipe. Single models are usually 25 mm in diameter. In double-row, the rod for curtains is 28 mm, and for tulle - from 10 to 16 mm. The length usually varies from 160 to 360 cm, but you can buy a one-piece rod 28-50 mm in diameter and 6 m long.

The standard diameter of the wooden rod is 28 mm. They produce models with a diameter of 16, 28, 25 mm and maximum length 2 m. It is possible to make a bar up to 50 mm in diameter on order, then its length can reach 4 m. Plastic tires reach 4 m in length and can be up to 8.7 cm wide, depending on the number of rows. The decorative strip is standard 5 or 9 cm, but models with hoods have wider strips up to 300 mm. The diameter of a standard plastic rod is the same as that of a wooden one - 28 mm. For kitchens or bathrooms, thin tulle models of 12 and 16 mm are selected. The length is from 2 to 3.6 m.

Pick up right size cornice is easy, if you start from existing standards of choice, as well as from several rules:

  • On each side, it is necessary to make the cornice longer than the window opening, by 15-40 cm;
  • When installing a cornice in the entire wall, it should lag behind the wall by 1.5-2 cm on each side;
  • Do not forget to install additional brackets every 1.5-2 m in the case of wall cornices and every 30-50 cm in the case of ceiling models.

Color solutions

To date, white cornices are the most common. This color goes well with the ceiling and baseboards, and also visually adds height to the room. The textures look interesting. Natural materials such as wood and leather look great in a classic or colonial interiors. Light gilding will add pretentiousness to the decoration in the good sense of the word. Black curtain rods are a great fit for modern styles, especially if you want to make the top of the curtains as inconspicuous as possible, while leaving it spectacular.

Various metallic shades have not gone unnoticed for many years now. Brass and copper cornices will add sophistication and come to replace the slightly bored gold and silver.

How to choose?

It is best if you take care of choosing a cornice even before the start of the repair. Then you do not have to then in a panic choose an option that is more or less combined with an already finished interior. But it is necessary to build on not only the style. Features of the room also mean a lot:

  • For narrow long room with a window on a narrow wall, the best choice would be cornices covering the entire space around the window. The cornice must be hung just under the ceiling to balance the proportions of the room.
  • Wooden bulky structures or wide baguette cornices should be bought for decorating large halls, since they will look bulky in small rooms.
  • Round cornices suitable for framing windows in a room of any size. If you choose the right fleurons, the room will seem cozier and more harmonious.
  • string cornices create an interesting effect of curtains floating in the air. They are perfect for small rooms in which the window should not become the center, but only set off the overall composition.
  • The larger and grander the room, the thicker the rod of the round cornice should be and the more expensive the material should be. If your budget is limited, use imitations, for example, plastic cornice instead of a wooden or inexpensive forged model.
  • Wrought iron structures should always be a bright accent, this is worth considering. It is almost impossible to “kill” the unusualness of the element without overloading the room. Even professional designers this causes certain problems.

What are in fashion now?

In our age, fashion is very democratic, and each of listed species cornices has its actual embodiment. In particular, tire ceiling cornices, iron round and forged figured ones are rightfully recognized as the most fashionable. Fashionable variations of the tubular cornice are mounted on the wall and equipped with simple attributes without unnecessary decor. They do not differ in bright color: black - perfect option. The given model of the cornice is combined with any curtains, including the current classic models on the drawstring. It is also suitable for eyelet curtains, which designers use in almost every style.

In the case of forged options, decor, on the contrary, is welcome. The latest trend is the stylization of the cornice under the branch of the plant. It can be just a bare branch, or maybe with leaves. The small double wrought iron mini curtain rods feature a similar plant design. Colors for both small and large models should be chosen from natural metals: blackened silver or gold, aged copper and bronze, brass. Black is also relevant here, it is especially often used when choosing mini-cornices for ceiling windows.

Examples in the interior

A fashionable simple iron tubular cornice does not attract too much attention, acting as an addition to an existing interior. Unobtrusive color and matte texture allows you to emphasize the deliberate simplicity of the design, while at the same time focusing on the interesting design of the window itself. Tire cornice is almost invisible under the ceiling of this living room. This choice is good for small room, as it allows you not to block the access of light to the room, while visually increasing the ceiling. A similar effect is provided not only by the white color and smooth texture, but also by the fact that the cornice is identical to the plinth in width.

Baguette cornice acts as a gang. In a room with such high ceilings, this solution is quite acceptable. It does not look overloaded due to the fact that the cornice is chosen to match the color of the walls and ceiling and is made in a simple design. The geometric ornament of the plank repeats the general direction in the interior, and the color of the contrasting element is chosen in the same shade as the floors. For a modern bohemian interior, there is nothing better than a string cornice. It allows in no way to distract attention from the bright curtains, which act as an accent in the interior. Roller blinds are fixed with a hidden cornice with lifting mechanism. Thereby general form rustic style bedroom unspoilt modern look designs.

In this case, the cornice is hidden behind the ceiling. which makes the room seem even taller. It is quite possible that at night you can light a special backlight built into the eaves. This helps to make the atmosphere of the nursery more interesting. Corner iron black cornice visually separates the walls and ceiling, made in the same color. Such small contrasting inclusions are necessary to create a truly stylish interior. Forged finial perfectly complements the design, emphasizing its lightness. In this case, the curtains do not perform a protective function, but a zoning one. For the same purpose, small forged cornices were selected. They visually separate each of the "sofas" from each other. The technique allows you to visually lengthen the space without losing the functional component.

Tell

The choice of a cornice for curtains can affect not only the perception of the interior of the room, but also its size: a well-chosen cornice can visually “raise” the ceiling, “expand” a wall that is too narrow, give volume to a small room.

Curtains should always match the chosen interior style, match the color scheme and complement the overall picture. They play an important role in the decor of the room, but cornices are no less important. In addition to the fact that the cornice has a constructive task - to hold the curtains, ensure their reliable operation, easy closing and opening, it must also match stylistically and harmoniously fit into the interior.

In order to choose the right curtain rod for curtains, the following factors must be considered:

  1. Each cornice is designed for certain loads, so approximately estimate the weight of the curtains, and select the cornices so that they correspond to this indicator.
  2. Decide on curtain mounts. They should match the selected fabric, move easily along the eaves, without clinging or “getting stuck”, while there should be no sounds.
  3. For light curtains, any type of fastening of cornices, both ceiling and wall, is suitable. For heavy materials, it is better to prefer a ceiling mount - it can withstand more weight.
  4. The choice of cornice is influenced by the location of the battery, heating pipes, as well as the size and width of the window sill. Nothing should interfere with the free hanging of the curtains, so these elements will have to be taken into account when attaching the cornice.

Advice. Remember that a properly selected cornice can visually change the perception of a room, correct flaws and emphasize advantages:

  • Narrow window. If the window has a small width, you can "enlarge" it - to do this, pick up a long cornice so that the curtains hanging on it cover not only the window, but also part of the wall near it.
  • Low ceilings. The ceiling can be visually “lifted” if you choose a ceiling-mounted cornice: a curtain hanging from the ceiling to the floor will help “lengthen” the distance between them.
  • Too big window. To correct the perception of the window, select a cornice with a length exactly the width of the window opening.

Cornice and room style

From the many options for curtain rods on the market, choose the one that most closely matches the style of your interior.

  • Baguette cornices are offered for decorating rooms in a classic style. Round cornices also look good, especially if they are wooden.
  • Minimalism or hi-tech that is popular today can be supplemented with a string cornice or round metal cornices.
  • Almost all "rustic" styles, be it American country or French Provence, use forged products as decorative elements. Forged cornices are suitable for them - both the natural color of the metal and painted.
  • Japanese and Roman blinds go well with aluminum profile cornices.

Cornice length

The total length of the cornice includes the length of the crossbar and two decorative tips. But before you start measuring the length of the cornice, you need to determine where it will be and how it will be attached.

  • When choosing a cornice for curtains that cover the entire wall with an entire window, the length of the cornice itself should be two to three centimeters less than the distance from the wall to the wall. At the same time, keep in mind that there should be at least three attachment points for such a long cornice!
  • If the cornice is located exactly above the window, then the brackets on which it is attached must be behind the window opening, otherwise you will not be able to fully open the window, and the parted curtains will cover part of the glazing. In this case, the length of the cornice should be thirty to forty centimeters longer than the width of the window opening.

brackets

Please note that the brackets have different lengths. If this length is greater than the distance from the window opening to the ceiling, the bracket will not fit above the window. Sometimes in such cases they are fixed below the level of the window opening, such placement is called "partially above the window". If the cornice has a length of more than two meters, then it must be mounted on three brackets, if less, two are enough.

The distance between the brackets should ideally not be less than one and a half and more than two meters. In this case, the cornice will hold tight, its rods will not deform, and the curtain fabric will not sag.

Cornice dimensions

To choose the right cornice for curtains, its design and position, you need to make the following measurements (in cm):

  • The length of the wall with a window from one side wall to the other.
  • The width of the window itself.
  • The distance the curtains will be from the wall.
  • Height from window opening to ceiling.

Mounting types

Each type of window cornice has its own mounts for hanging curtains. Consider the most common options.

Profile systems

The aluminum profile has guides, one or more, along which hooks slide - curtains cling to them.

Pros. Aluminum is strong enough, but at the same time plastic, it can be used to make rounded cornices for decorating niches, bay windows, lancet or other non-standard windows. In addition, it is profile cornices that are usually equipped with automatic curtain position control systems, which is very convenient, especially if the room has high ceilings.

There are also profile systems made of plastic, which attract at a low price. They are only suitable for light fabrics, as heavy curtains cause their deformation with their weight.

Hooks for profile systems are made of transparent plastic - so they are less noticeable. On top of the system, for decorative purposes, planks “under the tree”, “under the stone”, “under the skin” are usually attached. Installation and installation of such structures are simple and do not require much time.

If you need multi-row options for curtain rods, profile - the best choice. They can consist of curtains in two, three, and even four rows. For example, a transparent tulle is attached to the profile closest to the window, the next one carries a thick curtain, and the last one has a lambrequin. Or you can attach transparent tulle to all rows different colors, which will make it possible to vary the density of the light flux and its shade according to the mood.

Roller blinds, Japanese blinds, Roman curtains and blinds, which are popular today, belong specifically to profile systems, and have a common basis, although there are design differences between them.

classic cornice

The most traditional type of window cornice is tubular structures. They can be made of wood or metal pipe. The larger the diameter of the cornice - the heavier the curtains it can withstand.

Mounts for such curtains can be as follows:

  • Magnetic clips that serve not only as fasteners, but also as decoration. They can be of various shapes and colors.
  • Fabric loops.
  • Eyelets (holes in fabric, edged with metal or plastic).
  • Rings of wood or metal to which curtains are attached with hooks. Tulle and organza can tear on fasteners, and it will not hold dense fabrics; this option is only suitable for medium-density fabrics.

When choosing grommets or rings as fasteners for curtain rods, check the diameter of the cornice - it must be smaller than the diameter of the fastening ring, otherwise the curtain will not slide along the guide.

Typically, classic cornices have one or two tubular structures - you can hang tulle and a thick curtain on them. It is also possible to replace one of the structures with a string - the most suitable mount for tulle and organza. Classic cornices are suitable for any interior, it is only important to choose the right material from which they are made.

Forged cornices

If you want to choose a curtain rod that will decorate a room in the Baroque, Rococo, Empire, Country or Provence styles, stop by forged products. Depending on what tips they end with and what fabrics are used for curtains, such cornices look completely different.

Graceful Empire curls and velvet or satin curtains will create an atmosphere of luxury in the Baroque style, while floral elements of forging and "chintz" curtains in a small flower will take you to the hot summer of Provence.

Forged cornice brackets are interior decorations in themselves. The ideal option is to order them individually in order to express your personal preferences as much as possible and create a unique look for your home. Forged cornices are used as guides metal pipes or rods, and in this they are similar to the classical ones. There can also be several guides, usually no more than three.

string cornices

String cornices use a stretched metal wire - a “string” as guides. Fasteners for curtains - the same as in the classic cornice, but smaller in size. Magnetic clips look best on this design. Plastic strings are also used - they are suitable for light tulle or organza curtains. Such a cornice is practically invisible and there is a feeling that the tulle is floating in the air without any support.

Of all the options for curtain rods, this option is the most “lightweight” - it will not hold heavy curtains. More than others, it is suitable for decorating rooms in hi-tech, minimalism, modern, as well as combined styles. Such cornices, with the right selection of related elements, are most suitable for masking the shortcomings of the room.

Baguette cornices

Baguette cornices are similar in design to profile ones, but in them the fasteners are always closed with a decorative strip - a baguette. The baguette can be wide or narrow, various shapes, size, color.

Profiles for curtains can have from one to three rows. In the first row, a Velcro strip is often placed to secure the lambrequin. When choosing a baguette cornice, be guided by the color and shape of the baguette itself - after all, it is the main decorative element, and should organically fit into your interior.

Let's say you have purchased newfangled curtains that completely fit into the style of the interior of your home. Now is the time, also affecting the perception of the room. Choosing the right accessory for curtains, you can change the idea of the room - narrow it down or, conversely, expand it, as well as slightly increase in height.

Decorative cornice for window curtains

If the curtains are made of heavy thick textiles, you need to take into account the weight of the fabric and purchase a cornice that can withstand a significant load. How to choose a curtain rod for almost weightless curtains? A bulky product will look too strict and pretentious - the cornice should complement the curtain and not come to the fore.

How to choose a cornice among the many presented in specialty stores? To begin with, it’s good to get acquainted with all its types and understand how they differ from each other.

Classification of cornices

Profile products

They are made of metal, equipped with plastic fittings, lightweight, bend in accordance with the radius of curvature of the wall structure, ideal for mounting on sophisticated devices and arched window openings. They can have one lane or two at once. Such models are fixed to the wall with fasteners and ideally “lay down” to secure a light curtain.

Profile cornice for curtains

It varies from 10 cm to 30 cm in length, which makes it possible to carry out installation with the required overhang. Therefore, even if the window sill noticeably protrudes beyond the general boundaries of the window, curtains with such a cornice will not “lay down” on top of it.

Experienced craftsmen note the versatility of profile samples that can be mounted not only in residential premises, in the office, but even on the stage on the stage. It is very convenient that the products are equipped with a curtain pulling device - now you do not have to touch them with your hands and fear that they will get dirty ahead of time. The mechanism provides for the rise of French, Roman and Austrian types of curtains, and everything works automatically, without hesitation and breakdowns.

You will have to tinker with the cornices that are fixed for angular turns to the wall - they are made to order according to the measurements provided by the customer. Correctly taken measurements avoid the gap that usually forms between the curtains and the wall.

Plastic products

Due to the presence of an internal filler, heavy curtains can withstand. They are considered the simplest and most convenient device, which, if desired, is also attached to the ceiling.

Plastic cornice for curtains

If there are classic notes in the interior, a decorative overlay imitating wood is provided for such models.

Metal specimens

Transmits multiple metallic shades - gold, bronze, silver, retro-metals. In addition to being durable, they are wonderfully combined with unusual themed curtains, fixed on rings, which can be replaced with ties and loops.

Metal curtain rods

You should not count on the cheapness of this product - high-quality metal products are expensive.

Forged cornices

A real work of art, such models are hard to find on sale. Forging gives chic and luxury, but shows capriciousness and pretentiousness in relation to furniture and to the repair of an apartment or house. Particularly distinguished are forged tips made in the form of arrows or pipes.

Wrought iron curtain rod

It is possible to “control” the curtains using a pointer pen and a cord - the first device adjusts the position of the curtains to the left or right, the last one raises and lowers them. Products with an electric drive are equipped with a remote control panel. As you can see, everything is created solely for the convenience and comfort of the consumer.

Round samples

Buyers prefer round two-row and three-row cornices, with a pipe - such models are multifunctional and make it possible to design curtains as your heart desires.

Pipes are made from metal, wood or metal-plastic, each of which has a number of advantages. The classic wooden version is still popular.

string products

As you might have guessed, in such devices, pipes replace elegant and concise steel strings that run from one bracket of one wall to the opposite.

String cornice for curtains

It is not worth counting on the fact that the string will withstand a weighty thick curtain - you can only attach tulle to it.

Baguette cornices

Here, all the details are framed in a plank that performs a decorative role. You can choose a figured plank, embossed, with a pattern or pattern.

May have 2 or 3 rows. When buying such a model, pay attention to the correspondence of the color of the strip to the wallpaper and curtains - too saturated or, conversely, faded shades can spoil the appearance of the adjacent wall and ceiling.

wooden cornices

Their cost varies markedly due to differences in the quality of the types of wood from which the products are made. Wooden material is represented by oak, pine, cherry, walnut, can be pressed into a flat shape or be a round stick-pole with rings strung on it.

Choosing such a model for parquet and ceiling is as easy as shelling pears - natural colors fit into any design style.

Questions for designers

Criteria for choosing a cornice for the style of the room

Experienced designers shared their own secrets and recommendations on how to choose the right cornice:

  1. A spacious room, not cramped in space, also made in a classic style, will be favorably shaded by baguette and round cornices.
  2. Hi-tech does not tolerate platitudes, so string products will come in handy here.
  3. Aluminum profiles add sophistication and sophistication to Japanese and Roman curtains.
  4. If the apartment or house is finished with natural materials, for example, wood or stone, do not be stingy and buy forged products.

Despite the fact that the cornice is an auxiliary and functional element, it is able to level and hide the flaws of the room:

The role of tips and decorative details

For some reason, the notion has taken root in our society that it is better to hide the cornice than to flaunt it, even if it is worth it. However, designers continue to change the minds of customers by decorating rooms with profiles. good helpers unusual accessories and decorative details serve in a successful frame.

As decorative details brackets, holders, eyelets and other fasteners can protrude, you can’t do without tips. They can be sold as a set or purchased separately.

Brackets for curtains

Tips made of crystal and Murano glass will help to draw attention to a beautiful curtain, they look especially unusual in the form of a cone and a ball. In the children's room, it is appropriate to place tips that imitate fruits, greens and animals.

Do not forget about the rings - the best products today are those with a Teflon coating, which ensures silent and smooth movement of fasteners along the baguette.

  1. Above the window opening.

In this case, the guideline is the width of the window, to which at least 30-40 cm is added.

  1. Partially above the window opening.

You will need to measure the distance between the walls, the width of the window, the minimum protrusion from the wall structure to the curtain, the length between ceiling surface and the back side of the window opening.

Conclusion

Now you know all the secrets of how and which cornice to choose for curtains in your apartment. When purchasing a cornice, do not forget about the practicality and reliability of the device, consider the weight of the draperies of the curtains and the nuances of the layout of the room.

The cornice, of course, should fit the style of the interior, the shape of the window and the type of curtains, but first of all it is a functional accessory. That is, its main purpose is to support the curtains and provide all kinds of manipulations with them.

Metal profile cornices, equipped with plastic fittings, can be bent to any radius - they are light, therefore they are used for intricate arched windows, they are single-slat or multi-slat. Attach profile cornices to the ceiling or to the wall using brackets.

Profile cornices are suitable in cases where you need to hang a light tulle or if there is a small distance between the ceiling and the window, and also if you want the cornice to be invisible.

As for the brackets, they come in different lengths - from 10 to 30 centimeters. This allows you to fix a profile cornice with the desired overhang on the wall. Thanks to this, the curtains will not “lay down” on the window sill if it protrudes strongly. The length of a solid cornice of this type is up to 6 meters. If you use docking elements, then you can make any length.

Profile cornices are equipped with mechanisms for pulling curtains, so you can touch the curtains with your hands and not touch them. They are easy to use - sliders for curtains and tulle slide freely along the profile, and multi-row cornices allow you to decorate the window with multilayer curtains consisting of fabrics of different shades.

Profile plastic cornices with filler are used for heavy curtains, as well as for simple, straight windows. In these cornices, a decorative overlay under the structure of the tree is used, which gives the cornice a classic look.

These are familiar to all cornices with rounded guides. Can be made in gold, chrome. There are models for both modern and classic interiors.

Metal cornices are attached to the wall or ceiling. Accessories are also made of metal - hooks and rings. Metal cornices, in addition to their functional purpose, can also be perceived as decoration, they usually cost more than profile ones. The metal cornice is suitable for tulle and curtains. It is not suitable for sets with a lambrequin.

Such cornices are usually made to order, they are able to give the room a special chic. There are single, double and triple, with pipes and with strings. The main decorative element is forged tips. Management is mainly manual - using a cord or pointer pen.

The cord allows you to open the curtain with just one pull down, but there are also electric models equipped with a button or remote control. This design looks like an aluminum profile with a carriage driven by an electric motor.

1

This is a traditional type of cornice. It is the most versatile, as it fits into the interior of any style. There are eaves with one pipe, as well as two-row and three-row. The pipes of these cornices are made of wood, metal or plastic. Each material has its own advantages. But the wooden cornice is considered a classic - it never goes out of style.

In these cornices, a string is used instead of a pipe. The cornices look minimalist and do not attract much attention. Structurally, they are a special steel string stretched between brackets that are attached to the ceiling or walls. The string can be covered with a baguette. The main disadvantage is the low load bearing capacity, that is, for heavy curtains, this option is unacceptable.

Baguette cornices are similar to profile ones. In this version, all fasteners are hidden behind a decorative strip, which is important for interior design. Planks can be different: large or small sizes, very intricate shapes and any colors. The profiles of these cornices are made single-row, double-row and three-row. In the first row, a Velcro strip is often placed, to which a lambrequin is attached. When buying a baguette cornice, first of all pay attention to the color and shape of the plank, as this is the main element for creating a decorative composition.

1

Wooden cornices are a classic. They are made from oak, pine, cherry, walnut and other types of wood. As for the shape, they are flat or round with rings. Such cornices are matched to the color of furniture or parquet, which makes the interior more harmonious and holistic.

Choice of cornice parameters

The length of the cornice includes the length of the crossbar and two tips. Before choosing the length, first decide on the location of the eaves.
With the “wall to wall” option, choose the length of the cornice 2-3 centimeters less than the distance from wall to wall. Install the eaves on at least 3 brackets.

In the “above the window” option, install the brackets behind the edges of the window opening so that you can move the curtains and open the window completely. The total length of the cornice in this case must be taken 30 - 40 centimeters wider than the window opening.

Note that in both cases, the distance from the extreme point of the window to the ceiling must be sufficient to install the brackets. If this distance is small, then the bracket will not fit there. In this case, the option is suitable - "partially above the window", when the brackets are placed slightly below the level of the window, along the edges of it.

When choosing, remember the presence of batteries, pipes, the width of the window sill. After all, the curtains should hang freely from the eaves. To do this, there must be an optimal distance from the cornice rod to the wall.

Now about how many brackets to buy. If the length of the cornice is up to 2 meters, then two brackets can be dispensed with. The optimal distance between the brackets is 1.5 - 2 meters. Then they securely hold the eaves, and the rods themselves do not sag under the weight of the curtains.

  1. The distance between the side walls at the window.
  2. Window width.
  3. Minimum distance from wall to curtains.
  4. The distance from the ceiling to the top edge of the window opening.
  5. With this cheat sheet and go to the store.
  • When choosing a cornice, remember that it must match the interior.
  • For a room in a classic style, a baguette cornice is suitable. You can also use a round cornice, especially a wooden model.
  • If the design of the room is minimalist or high-tech, buy a string cornice.
  • Aluminum profiles go well with Roman or Japanese curtains.
  • In a room finished with stone or natural wood, it is better to use a wrought iron cornice, it is ideal for high style.
  • If the room is low, buy a ceiling cornice, then it will appear higher.
  • To visually enlarge the window, choose a long cornice. If the curtains cover part of the wall, the window will seem larger than it actually is.
  • For curtains with a lambrequin, it is optimal to fix the cornice under the ceiling so that it does not cover part of the window. You need to take a triple cornice.
  • For a children's room, plastic cornices are ideal, as they come in all colors and blend seamlessly with bright furniture for kids.

The color of the cornice plays a huge role in shaping the proportions of the room. The choice is influenced by the palette of walls, the style of the interior, the height of the ceilings, the colors of the curtains, the size and geometry of the opening, the dimensions and shape of the window to be decorated.

How to choose

Today, the assortment of cornices is represented by a huge palette, you can choose not only color, but also shades. Here the question arises: what is the benchmark? In each individual case, the answer is different, and not even the most experienced designer will give clear recommendations. There are just a few general tips that will help in choosing the color of the cornice for curtains.

under the walls

Matching the color of the cornice to the main tone of the wallpaper or wall paint is a universal solution. The option is neutral, suitable for rooms of any size, merges with the main color of the finish, “lost” in the interior. The composition is complete, and the main aesthetic load falls on the curtains.

In the color of the curtains

Cornices are relevant in rooms with low ceilings. This combination visually raises the opening vertically, as a result, the proportions visually change. The same solution helps when the interior is full of details, and you need to calm down the riot of decor a little.

Contrast with the main trim

If the room is high, then the cornices will fit exactly in contrast with the main finish. Prem is very effective if the colors are polar, for example:

  • White black;
  • cream, light beige / dark chocolate, wenge, walnut, cherry in rich colors with a red tint - this combination can be called a classic;
  • black, dark brown, burgundy, purple, rich red, green walls / metallic color of curtains - silver, gold, brass, light gray, fasteners for curtains in natural wooden shades - honey, amber work well here.

Curtains in contrast with trim horizontally cut the space and align the geometry. Also, designers often use this technique if they need to decorate a very long opening with several windows. Here the curtains are matched to the color of the curtains, and this composition visually breaks the elongated wall, leaving the feeling of stretching.

Under the ceiling

- a win-win option in any interiors. The choice here is small - all shades of white, or the selection of shades to match the color stretch fabric. The cornices become invisible, merge with the overall design and do not draw attention to themselves from other details.

Furniture, skirting boards, parts and accessories

Textures and textures also play a huge role in choosing the color of the cornice. If the handles on the doors, the chandelier is made of bronze, then the curtain mount should be chosen in this segment. Metallic gloss, such as chrome products, and the discreet gloss of brushed metal, are recommended to be combined with gray shades in the design of the space. For gold accessories, it is better to choose a cornice in the same palette.

If furniture made of laminated chipboard or wood, as well as skirting boards and trim on the doors are made in dark color, then the curtain rod should be in this color segment, and vice versa, so you will avoid dissonance in the design. In modern styles (high-tech, techno), furniture made of glossy materials is often used for furnishings; cornices with metallic shades will look good here: shining polished stainless steel, gold, silver. For natural wood furnishings, especially in classic interiors, cornices in the color of bronze, brass, aged gold are ideal.

When choosing between metallic and wood shades, it is a good idea to take a look at the overall interior design. Sometimes a bright, shiny note should be added to a calm brown scale. And vice versa, if the room is already filled with details of metallic shades, then it is better, if not to muffle, then at least not to add shine.

Color, functionality and interior style

Today you can buy cornices for curtains of absolutely any color, a larger segment is represented by natural and neutral shades, less often there are models in a bright saturated palette. And here the buyer is waiting for a difficult choice.

Functional

Logically, in standard interior it is better to buy a cornice of ordinary colors, but bright accessories excite the imagination and I want to add something original, accent. In such situations, you should be guided by the functionality of the room in which you choose the eaves.

In the bedroom, office, living room, it is recommended to choose curtain fasteners in a calm, natural color. Bright models are suitable for decorating the kitchen and nursery, here you should rely on your taste and the right combination colors. So, if the room is executed in a green / yellow palette, you should choose the shades of this segment, but the blue cornice is unlikely to harmoniously fit into such an interior.

Bright cornices are the decoration of the room, it is important to choose the right tone, type of fastening, model design

Interior style

Usually, in interior design there is some basic style: classic, oriental, ethno, eco, modern, modern, etc., which dictates its own color segment for decoration.

For example, classic styles are characterized by white, beige, brown, natural wood, gold, natural shades of yellow, green blue, respectively, and curtain rods should be in this color segment. For the loft, the base is gray, white, which means that fasteners for curtains in metallic shades will be relevant here. Minimalism - beige of different tones in contrast with dark chocolate, wenge, so you should give preference to wooden rods or baguette models with a simple decorative insert without frills. For country and eco styles - warm wooden shades: honey, walnut, straw, amber. High tech is based on clean, rich colors: black, red, gray, which means that the cornices must be in the color of the main finish or metallic gloss.

If you really like curtains, you can buy models that are not noticeable in the interior, for example, fixtures with a lambrequin bar. They are a lifesaver, but for their device during the repair process, a special niche should be made. A good option is wooden and metal rods with simple brackets and discreet tips. They become almost invisible in the interior, if or with a lambrequin-skirt.

It's hard to imagine a window without beautiful curtains. This means that it's time to look for the right fabric and learn how to choose the right cornice, because it's so difficult to get lost among all the assortment presented in stores.

How to choose a curtain rod: photos inspire

There is a proverb among designers and not only that windows are the eyes of a room, which means that they should be framed with dignity. But before choosing cornices for curtains, photos of which you can find in the catalogs of manufacturers, it is important to decide in what style the window opening will be decorated. Cornices can be one-, two- and three-row, and are made of materials such as:

  • tree;
  • metal;
  • plastic.

A wooden structure is already a classic of the genre, which fits perfectly into the interior of any orientation. For the manufacture of such a product, wood with a dense texture and pronounced fibers is taken. Generally preferred:

  • walnut;
  • oak;
  • cherry;
  • and some conifers.

Wood cornices are rarely three-row and do not provide for a tulle-curtain-lambrequin combination.

Plastic is a more economical and versatile material that adapts perfectly to any style and is presented in a wide range of shades and configurations. The disadvantage of such products is that low-quality plastic can fade or crack over time.

Metal cornices are distinguished not only by their strength, but also by their solid appearance. They are perfectly combined with various fabrics and in themselves can be an interesting accessory, and forging elements give a special chic to such products. Cornices are available in glossy or matte, and are also made of copper, brass or other materials. Black, white, gold or "silver-plated" products are very popular.

Which cornice is better: the perfect choice

In the question of which cornice is better, one should start not only from the material, but also from the design. According to the configuration, they distinguish:

  • rod;
  • strings;
  • rail;
  • profile;
  • baguette.

The main thing is that the product matches the mood and style of the interior. When choosing a cornice, it is important to consider a number of factors:

  • distance between walls;
  • window width;
  • the height of the wall section between the ceiling and the window opening.

The question of how to choose the length of the cornice often confuses buyers. Usually this parameter is determined as follows: window width plus 40-50 cm. Such calculations are valid for small and medium rooms. When making windows in large and elongated rooms, the rods are pulled along the entire wall with indents along the edges of 3-4 inches. Longer lengths require a larger section of cornice pipes and slats, and in order to avoid sagging of the structure, one additional bracket is added for every one and a half meters of length.

By placing on the wall, the cornices are arranged in the following ways:

  • from corner to corner;
  • just above the window;
  • partly above the window.

This or that method can significantly adjust the spatial geometry of the room. The appearance of the entire room depends on the choice of cornice.

How to choose ceiling cornices

According to the method of fastening, the cornices are divided into wall and ceiling, the latter are more profitable, because they go well with many styles and allow you to visually make the ceilings higher. So, how to choose the right ceiling cornices, what parameters to pay attention to?

  1. The cornice can be made of plastic or lightweight aluminum, which is more durable and has good performance.
  2. Decorative consoles for products serve as an additional element of decor and give the window a more elegant look.
  3. The number of rows of canvases.
  4. Type of clips and hooks: plastic ones are quieter when moving, and metal ones are spectacular.
Cornices with the type of fastening "under the ceiling" have another significant advantage - good heat-insulating properties, provided by a tighter fit of the curtains to the wall, which creates a kind of barrier to cold air from the window.

The financial side of the issue is also important, however, today the cornices are presented in such a variety that it is not difficult to choose the model that is optimal in all respects.

What material are the cornices in your house made of? Tell about it in

Wall cornices for curtains can be presented in a variety of designs. Choosing the right element of decor for individual conditions is not an easy task for the layman.

There are two main types of fastening cornices: to the ceiling and to the wall. Among some ceiling types there are those that are fixed to the wall with the help of special supports. Here you will need additional accessories. The most popular length is three meters. If necessary, a larger structure can be obtained by composing it from short cornices and connecting elements. Holders and fasteners are supplied.

Types of structures

Varieties of cornices for curtains, photos of which can be seen in the article, are represented by the following designs.

Baguette cornice

The shape of the baguette resembles a frame for a picture and has the same functionality - to frame the canvas.

String

This species is known to us from the Soviet past. It is a thin cable stretched between two brackets.

Round

At its core, it has a tubular rod, which is attached to the wall through brackets and supports, and rings with fasteners for curtains or eyelets go along it. Can be supplied with an additional back bar for another blade.

Profile

It has become widespread due to its design - a profile and rails along which fasteners for canvases slide.

Main criteria

  1. After designing the interior, you need to decide how many rows in the cornice you may need. Their maximum number is five, respectively, for five textile fabrics.
  2. If it was not possible to take measurements in advance, it is convenient to stop at sliding version. This design can be moved to any length up to three meters.
  3. The window size affects the scale. The larger its size, the more massive you can use curtain rods, the photos below show examples of rooms and configurations window openings suitable for one species or another.

Material

What are curtain rods? And what to choose - plastic, metal, wood or forging?

Tree

wooden structures- this is comfort, charm, luxury of natural materials. The bar is made from a single piece of wood. This crossbar is not designed for heavy loads. In wooden rods, attention must be paid to varnishing and the quality of the coating.

Metal

Such designs are affordable and easy to install. Already familiar to everyone, round metal cornices are covered with a film with plastic tips and brackets. Family metal structures subdivided into galvanic subspecies, painted, laminated with a film under different materials, decorative with curly tips and forged subspecies. Galvanic coating is the most resistant and high-grade. It does not peel off, does not crumble, does not fade, is not subject to damage.

In forged cornices, it is important to consider several points:

  1. Rod diameter. It ranges from 16-40 mm. These parameters are important when choosing rings or eyelets.
  2. Strength - the thickness of its material with an acceptable indicator of 0.6 mm.
  3. Decorative functional elements included - tips, rings and brackets. High-quality electroplating, inlay, hanging details turn forged structures into an exquisite piece of furniture.

Plastic

This is a lightweight and economical option, made of PVC, available in a variety of colors. Wall-mounted plastic cornices for curtains are designed for weightless fabrics, as well as for curtain or medium-heavy linen. Lightness, environmental friendliness and smooth sliding of curtains are the advantages that these curtain rods have. Photos in the interior clearly demonstrate the external attractiveness and purpose of these models.

Choice of mounts

Types of cornices for curtains differ in the types of fasteners.

The quality of the wall cornice is always determined by the reliability of the fasteners.

brackets

Some manufacturers compress the circumference of the holders to 30-40 mm. Full fasteners are defined with a diameter of 55-60 mm and with three mounting holes instead of two. The length of a good bracket, so that the canvas hangs freely and closes the heating system, is 15 cm or more.

Retainer

A simple way is to fix the rod with a screw. If the stem is accidentally rotated or shifted, it is possible to get a deep scratch. Tightening the screw under the ceiling is extremely inconvenient. The best solution for attaching a metal rod is a magnetic retainer. In this case, the bar and its coating will be intact. You can always wear it with a curtain.

Rings

Round wall designs have a unique approach to these details. The inner part of the metal rings is made of plastic - thus, friction on the rod itself is minimized and allows the curtains to move silently. Rings are counted in the ratio: 10 pieces per 1 m.

Angle hinges

They are used in complex, non-linear forms, with non-standard walls, windows or niches. To install the rod on the bay openings, bay window connectors are required, mounted both on the external and on the inner corner.

delighter

Most manufacturers forget to put it in the kit. This necessary element allows you to start one curtain after another, completely closing the gap through which sunlight breaks through.

Selection rules

For different types of cornices for curtains, some factors are taken into account:

  1. Interior style and textile design.
  2. The compositional construction of curtains - layering, rows, the presence of lambrequins and the mass of fabrics.
  3. The area of the room and the shape of the window opening.
  4. The system for attaching curtains to the eaves - eyelets, hooks, clips.
  5. Material and design of the cornice.
  6. The maximum load on the eaves depends on the diameter of the guide.

The well-known folk thought is applicable to the selection of an important interior detail for a room: "the miser pays twice." After all, style and reliability cannot be cheap. A well-thought-out interior is a guarantee of a high-quality choice of such necessary and decorative elements as wall cornices for curtains, the photos of which further show popular options for wall models.

It plays an important role in this. To hang curtains beautifully and securely, it is advisable to know what curtain rods are. , and where they can be placed. According to the method of fastening, there are two types of them: wall and ceiling. From the name it becomes clear where each variety is installed.

Both options are attractive and practical, but each of the designs has some features. Using a ceiling mount provides significant benefits:

  • . The effect is achieved due to the length of the canvas descending from above. If vertical striped fabric is chosen, the illusion is enhanced.
  • It becomes possible to hide the protruding window sills. Especially good in this case will be a curved lamella.
  • Windows located just under the ceiling can be decorated even if there is no place to fix the wall console.
  • The ability to hide flaws in the finish.
  • The best option for additional temperature control in the room. Dense curtains, fixed on arc-shaped lamellas, cover the window opening from all sides. They trap cold air in winter and overheated air in summer.

Ceiling systems can be used for any design, including tensile structures. Modern technologies settings allow it.

So, there are 2 types of cornices for curtains: wall and ceiling. Wall-mounted ones are more familiar to us, they are easier to install, and ceiling-mounted ones need to be chosen at the stage of rough repair, but they create additional opportunities for zoning, and often look more neat.

Types of cornices for curtains with photos and descriptions

They are made from various materials. The three most commonly used are:

  • plastic;
  • tree;
  • metal.

All of them are quite strong and reliable. As long as it's made of good quality plastic. The systems are also different. Three groups of fasteners can be distinguished.

1. Strings

The main element on which the fabric is suspended is a metal wire or string. It is fixed in two places to the ceiling and stretched to the desired state using a special threaded mechanism. The system is extremely simple and cost effective. Its main disadvantage is its low strength. Heavy panels will become an unbearable burden for the wire, so dense textiles should be selected with care.

In any case, over time, the string stretches and sags ugly. This problem is easily eliminated by tightening the wire with an adjusting mechanism. The significant advantages of such consoles include lightness, ease of installation and use, low cost. They can be not only one, but also multi-row, which makes it possible to fix several different curtains.

If you do not like the unattractive appearance of the string, you can close it from the side of the room with a baguette, decorative tape or foam plinth. Designs are good for airy fabrics, they can be used to create a feeling of lightness and spaciousness. It is better not to fasten dense curtains of even light weight in this way. They are unlikely to look good.

2. Profile

Curtains are attached to movable hooks that are installed in the guide profile or rail. Hence the second name of such models - tire. Hanging curtain fasteners move like on a rail due to their special T-shape or on small rollers. Such a panel is highly durable, which, however, depends on the material from which it is made.

The guides are mounted in one row or in several and are closed with a decorative overlay. The latter can be anything: imitate stucco, wood, metal, etc. If the console is supposed to be fixed in a stretch ceiling or a special niche, the trim is not installed. The design of the profile cornice gives it a number of possibilities:

  • Adjustable length, which can be reduced / increased by removing / adding elements. The seam areas do not hinder the sliding of the hooks.
  • Making bends of various configurations. Special turning fragments allow you to make a corner or turn.
  • Flexibility. Guides made of special plastic can repeat the configuration of the base, while the smoothness of sliding of the panel is not disturbed.

Systems can have a different number of rows. The exception is horizontal flexible varieties. They are produced only in single row.

3. With a barbell

To fix and move the curtains, a rod of round or square section. Rings attached to the fabric are put on it. With their help, the curtains can be moved along the console. You should not make such systems longer than 4 m, otherwise they will not be able to withstand heavy textiles. In any case, for this reason, it is recommended to install additional fasteners every 1.3-1.5 m. The curtain will not move in these areas, which must be taken into account.

In the past, most rods were made of wood, modern options more often metal. Bronze and brass products are especially good, but steel and duralumin are also not bad. You can find in the sale of parts made of metal-plastic, imitating various materials.

If we compare the profile and rod consoles, then the former allow the fabric to move freely throughout the entire length. The latter do not always provide such an opportunity, but they can have a very attractive appearance. These are metal tubes and rods of complex shape with engravings and embossed surfaces. Complementing the composition curly tips.

Types of fastening curtains to the eaves

The choice of how to attach the curtain to the panel depends on several factors. From the type of construction, from the density and texture of the material of the curtains, as well as from their model. It is necessary to take into account the style of the interior. You can choose one of these options:

1. Hinged

Loops are sewn on top of the product, which are put on the bar. They can be made from base fabric, companion material or all kinds of ribbons, cords, braids, etc. Depending on the general design their rooms are decorated with additional accessories, made static or fastened with buttons, decorative buttons, adhesive tape.

On loops with ties

Such models are similar to the option described above, only ties are used instead of loops. The decor is appropriate for all types of curtains, it is used with caution for French and Japanese curtains. You can tie fasteners with bows or knots. Additional decor is also appropriate, such as beads, artificial flowers or rhinestones.

2. On eyelets

Used only for consoles in the form of a rod. Holes are cut out in the upper part of the curtains, which are framed with eyelets: rings made of wood, plastic or metal. A round cornice is threaded into them. This mounting option gives beautiful deep folds, so additional decoration in the form of voluminous lambrequins or swags is most often not required.

3. On clothespins, hooks, clips

Suitable for string and profile structures. The fabric is fixed on fasteners that are inserted into the guides or put on the wire. It is possible to use it with a rod - in this case, large rings with fastenings for curtains are put on it. This a good option for classic interiors. Magnetic curtain clips have also come into fashion, very convenient and easy to fix.

To make the right choice, you should pay attention to several important points:

  • Room decoration. The product should harmoniously fit into the interior of the room, both in size and in color and shape.
  • The number of layers and texture of the material. Multilayer thick curtains have a lot of weight that the design must withstand.
  • console material. Metal products are considered the most durable, but high-quality plastic and wood are practically not inferior to them. The heavier the textile decor, the more reliable the system should be.

It is possible to determine which curtain rods are the most convenient only taking into account the conditions in which they will be used. Each of the systems is good in its own way. For example, for light fabrics, a string will suffice, while heavy panels require secure fastening to a rod or profile. A competent choice of product will help to avoid unplanned spending on the ceiling and the purchase of a new console.

Curtains are an integral part of the design of the room, which favorably emphasizes the dignity of the interior and creates comfort. At the same time, not only the color scheme of the curtains themselves is important, but also the design of the device for hanging them. The choice of a suitable cornice for curtains involves an exact correlation of the artistic features of the device with the design of the room, as well as taking into account the installation method - on the wall or ceiling.

Wall cornice device for attaching curtains and features of choice

The cornice is a device that consists of 3 elements:

  • remote brackets with which the entire system is attached to the wall surface; usually there are 2 at the edges and 1 in the middle;
  • the basis for hanging the curtain canvas - it can be a string, a rod or a profile;
  • cornice tips in the form of artistically designed details.

When choosing a particular model, you need to consider a few simple nuances:

The cornice can be attached to the wall surface above the window or directly into the ceiling. Each option has its own advantages. For example, if a stretch ceiling is installed, then dismantling part of it to install the cornice is quite problematic, and in this case it is better to install the cornice on the wall above the window.

If you mount the unit on the ceiling, then a beautiful impression is created that the curtain simply falls from above. In this case, care must be taken to ensure that all working mechanisms are carefully hidden.

However, if it is assumed that the cornice itself should serve as a design element. Of course, it is mounted in a conspicuous place (more often on the surface of the wall, in order to contribute to the interior of the room.

Features of fastening the curtains to the cornice on the wall

According to the features of fastening the curtains, the following cornices are distinguished:

How to install a wall cornice

Hanging wall curtain rods is not difficult, and all the work can be done in 1 hour. It is important to properly prepare and make all the necessary calculations before purchasing the device.

Window layout

Cornices are selected according to the standard of the window - two- or three-leaf (wider options are less common).

The rules for marking the surface are as follows:

  • It is necessary to decide in advance where the cornice will be mounted - on the ceiling or on the wall.
  • The distance from the rod to which the curtain material will be attached to the upper part of the window opening should be at least 5-6 cm. Otherwise, the curtains will let in light from above and touch the floor. In addition, a lower location can create difficulties with opening a transom or window.
  • The extreme brackets should depart from the edges of the window exactly symmetrically, the distance is chosen arbitrarily, but it should be at least 15 cm. The central bracket is located, respectively, in the center.

It is important to determine how far the bracket will stand from the surface. It depends on the texture of the curtain fabric. If it is planned to install tulle, light curtains in the bedroom or in the kitchen, as well as in the children's room, it is enough to indent 15-20 cm from the wall. In this case, the cornice is mounted to the wall, it is enough to use a 1-rod product.

If heavy curtains are hung, curtains in the hall, curtains on the grommets, which, due to the peculiarities of the bend, have big sizes folds, then it is possible to mount them to the ceiling or choose brackets with a large indent (from 35-40 cm). Otherwise, the canvas will be tightly adjacent to the wall, and the design will lose a lot due to flaws.

Mounting Features

The technology for mounting the cornice and attaching it to the wall largely depends on the surface where it needs to be fixed:

  • on the wall;
  • between two walls (in narrow rooms);
  • on an ordinary ceiling;
  • on a stretch ceiling.

All of these cases are discussed below. The tools you will need for the job are:

  • construction roulette;
  • pencil;
  • long line;
  • building level;
  • screwdriver or screwdriver.

A comparison table of the most popular mounting methods is presented below.

In the case of installation in the ceiling, there are some nuances, since often ceilings are used not traditional, but stretch. At the same time, installation into walls is often impossible due to the fact that they are made of reinforced concrete. Below, the technology for installing a curtain rod for curtains under a stretch ceiling is discussed in more detail.

Fixing the cornice to the stretch ceiling: step by step instructions and video

Faster and easier to fix the cornice to the wall or between two walls, however, if the installation is done directly under the ceiling, then the entire working part will hide behind it, and the view will be more attractive.

Of course, nothing is attached to the material of the ceiling itself due to the unreliability of such a design. The basis for installation is wooden bars, which must be fixed in advance on the base ceiling and hidden under the tension canvas. The sequence of actions will be as follows:

  • Under the surface of the stretch ceiling, support bars of the required length are attached. They must be taken from durable wood species to avoid splitting.
  • Self-tapping screws holding the brackets are screwed into the surface of the bar.
  • The cornice itself with a curtain is hung on the brackets.

NOTE. When installing a stretch ceiling, it is better to take into account the position of the future cornice in advance and create a niche for it. More details can be seen here.

Fixing the cornice in the bath: step by step instructions and video

The bathroom has its own specifics. A special cornice in the form of a bar fits here.

These rods can be conditionally divided into several types:

As for the material, there are plastic and metal rods. Of course, from the point of view of practicality, it is better to choose the metal version. However, such a cornice does not always fit into the design, so the decision must be made based on both factors.

Metal products are not subject to corrosion, as they are made of stainless alloys or aluminum, which is also resistant to water.

The sequence of mounting the rod is as follows:

  • The distance between the walls to which the fastening will be made is measured. At the same time, it is better to indent 10-15 cm from the ceiling - this will look more beautiful.
  • Places where the device will be fixed are marked with a pencil.
  • According to the instructions, with the help of dowels or self-tapping screws, the supports are screwed in and the cornice is put on.

You can see the whole technology visually here.

Regardless of the choice of mounting method for the cornice, the following important points must be considered:

Varieties of curtains

It is important to understand that along with the cornice, it is the curtains themselves that make the main share in the design of the room. In addition, the type of curtains often affects the choice of a particular model of cornice. Today, there are a large number of curtains on the market - traditional and modern.

Classic

They are classic canvases that are fastened with clips, eyelets or Velcro.

If with traditional options met everyone, then the curtains on the grommets appeared relatively recently. Their fittings provide for the creation of special slots in the upper part of the canvas, which are reinforced with metal rings so that the material is not damaged over time. It is through these rings that the curtains are put on the cornice (pipe).

The advantages of this model are obvious:

  • they look original and bring a fresh note to the interior;
  • thanks to the rings, the curtains are very easy to put on the pipe;
  • such curtains are easier to open, especially for kids - they easily slide through the pipe thanks to wide rings;
  • the risk of tearing the canvas from the eaves is practically eliminated;
  • curtains last longer - the fabric does not deteriorate with metal clips.

Such curtains are appropriate in different rooms- they look good in the kitchen and in the nursery.

Especially for children, you can use the option of hinged curtains - it is very convenient to open and close them, and it is almost impossible to rip them off.

With the right approach to business, the loops will serve not only as a fastener, but also as an element original decor rooms.

Roller blinds

They are also called roller blinds or roller blinds. Such curtains rise up and fold into a roll. This technology provides a number of advantages to these products:

  • lifting height can be fully adjusted (at any level);
  • the curtains are fully stretched, which looks very attractive;
  • the canvas can be selected exactly according to the size of the window, including a very small one (for example, in the attic or in the attic);
  • thanks to the possibility of choosing the density of the canvas, it is possible to provide the most comfortable flow of light - with semi-shading or full shadow.

The choice of curtain design today is extremely diverse, it is possible to create individual design with a printout of a pre-selected pattern on special printers. Therefore, when right choice the curtains themselves and accessories for them can be created unique interior a place where the owners and guests will always be pleased to be.
