Leveling the surface of walls and ceilings by plasterboard lining has become quite popular. It turns out it is relatively inexpensive and fast, but at the same time, albeit slightly, the volume of the room decreases. Such an option, how to make a drywall niche, may well expand the usable space, and not only visually. In any case, plasterboard walls with niches will look great both in the living room and in the corridor, and when using a waterproof material, they will also be used in the bathroom.

Drywall niches increase the usable space of the room.

Do-it-yourself drywall niche is an interesting and creative task, quite doable for anyone home master. First you need to figure out how your design will look like and transfer all the dimensions on paper. So it will be easier to calculate how much and what material is required. After that, you can purchase material and prepare the tools necessary for the production of work:

Glasses for working with drywall, building level, plaster saw, metal scissors, pliers, side cutters, hammer, knife with replaceable blade, tape measure with lock.

  • perforator;
  • grinder and / or metal scissors;
  • screwdriver or a set of screwdrivers;
  • level, plumb line, tape measure, pencil;
  • stationery knife, hacksaw;
  • putty, a container for it, spatulas;
  • sickle;
  • fasteners: dowel-nails, bedbugs.

Additionally, a spiked roller, glue, paint, dry building mixtures, such as gypsum plaster, power tools may be required. But it already depends on what kind of design you come up with.

Drywall niche installation technology

The easiest option for placing a niche in the wall is to move its lining to a distance equal to the depth of the niche. Such niches can have a small width, 15 centimeters, but they can be built not one, but 2 or 3, equipped with additional shelves, mirrors.

The installation of any niches begins with the marking according to the drawing of the base wall and the installation of a metal profile on it along the perimeter of the niche.

To cut and set the profile exactly according to the markup, you will need scissors or a grinder, a tape measure and a building level. For fastening we use dowel-nails.

In our case, you can use almost any profile, rack or rail, since the recess of the niche is not wide and does not imply a heavy load. To cut and set the profile exactly according to the markup, you will need scissors or a grinder, a tape measure and a building level. For fastening we use dowel-nails. Then we begin to assemble the frame for wall cladding.

It is more convenient to start by placing a guide profile (NP) on the floor of the room. To do this, measure the required distance from the main wall with a tape measure, taking into account the thickness of the plasterboard. Sheets with dimensions of 2500x1200x12.5 mm are usually used. We make marks, draw a line along the profile. You can transfer the marks for the ceiling NP using a plumb line, or you can do otherwise. Assemble the frame from the upper and lower NPs by installing vertical rack profiles (SP) of the desired height along the edges.

The length of the profiles is usually 3 m, so it will be necessary to cut them. It is better to measure the height of the profile in each place where it will be installed separately.

The length of the profiles is usually 3 m, so it will be necessary to cut them. It is better to measure the height of the profile in each place where it will be installed separately. In different places in the room, the height may differ by 1-1.5 cm. Each room is imperfect and has its own errors. Applying a level, we achieve a strictly vertical position of the racks. Now the guides need to be fixed on the dowel-nails. If desired, you can assemble such a frame using only NP around the perimeter. When moving from a wall to a floor or ceiling, it is enough to cut the side walls with scissors and bend it at a right angle.

Exactly opposite the profile fixed on the main wall, we put vertical racks and horizontal jumpers between them according to the size of the niche. Then we install jumpers from the racks in the direction of the main wall. These can be profiles for attaching shelves or simply connecting jumpers at the corners of the structure. We fasten on bedbugs.

If such niches run along the entire wall, the frame will be strong enough, otherwise additional profiles and lintels must be fixed to the wall.

What if you need a wide and solid niche?

For the manufacture of large shelves and niches, a conventional galvanized profile with a back width of 75 mm is used. The products of the German company Knauf are also distinguished by high strength.

The combination of a metal profile with drywall allows you to make a wide variety of designs, arbitrary shapes and sizes. Everyone is well aware of the furniture multi-level wall - a slide. Such a wall can be built independently using GKL. Only the profile needs to be chosen more durable.

For the manufacture of large shelves and niches, a conventional galvanized profile with a back width of 75 mm is used. The products of the German company Knauf are also distinguished by high strength; they use thicker metal. The frame for the shelf itself is done a little differently.

A rectangular frame is bent from a single piece of the profile, which is fastened with dowel-nails to the wall. In the place of bends, only the side of the profile is incised, then the adjacent sidewalls are fastened with self-tapping screws (bugs) or a cutter. If the frame is long, it is reinforced with transverse jumpers spaced no more than 400 mm apart. Sheathing the frame with drywall from above and below gives it additional strength.

Two such frames, fastened together by jumpers, form a frame for a wall cabinet, and if you attach them to the floor with profiles, you get the base of a rather voluminous niche built into the wall. Combining such designs with each other, you can create built-in furniture with shelves, niches, cabinets of any configuration. Gorka is no exception.

Even more original things can be done if you use a flexible profile from Flext for installation. Each profile section consists of 2 L-shaped halves with locks at the ends. This allows you to create a profile of the required length, with the possibility of obtaining a closed structure of arbitrary shape. Using Flext along with a regular profile, you can include elements of a round, oval, heart-shaped, and so on in a plasterboard wall frame with niches.

Today's repair is almost impossible without the use of drywall as the main finishing material. With it, you can achieve the perfect surface of walls and ceilings, as well as create a variety of structures: partitions, niches, shelves and arches.

This material has several advantages:

  • environmental friendliness;
  • availability;
  • ease of fastening;
  • light finishing;
  • there are various options sheets with different characteristics.

In addition, a do-it-yourself drywall niche is very simple. It is enough to know the basics of drywall technology and your home will be transformed beyond recognition.

Drywall niches can have a wide variety of designs. Among all options the most common types are:

  • open type design. Open niches from drywall most often installed in the living room to display souvenirs, collections of small items, etc. With their help, you can create a unique entourage of the room;
  • closed type of construction. The most functional and is used to store clothes, books and other things. They are mainly made in the corridor or bedroom, where it is necessary to hide household items from prying eyes;
  • with backlight. Such a drywall niche will help add additional lighting to the room, as well as allow you to highlight and focus the attention of guests on it in an original way. Looks great if interior decoration combined with the use of mirrors;
  • without illumination. It has the lightest design. Partition with such niches will perfectly fit into any interior of the apartment.

Niches also differ in functionality:

  • decorative. It is part of the interior of the room and does not carry a special practical load. Such drywall niches in the living room will look best;
  • to store various things. The most practical. Such drywall niches in the wall will help rid the room of bulky cabinets and hanging shelves. Moreover, they will fit very organically into small-sized rooms;
  • zonal. Such a partition with a niche will help not only visually, but also actually divide the room into several functional zones. For example, in the dining room, kitchen and rest area.

Today, the use of drywall constructions instead of some furniture elements is very relevant. So, drywall niches can be used instead of hanging shelves, for placing a TV in a wall, creating decorative fireplace or dressing room, etc.
All of the above options can be easily done with your own hands. Therefore, the choice of design depends solely on your wishes and possibilities.

Create a design diagram

If you want to construct drywall niches with your own hands, you definitely need to develop a drawing of the future design.
The scheme is developed according to the following algorithm:

  • determine the appearance;
  • choose its position inside the room;
  • we draw on the diagram the parameters of the wall on which the installation will subsequently be carried out;
  • put on the drawing the dimensions of the niche itself. It must be calculated deepening;

Note! The deepening of the structure directly depends on its purpose. If a TV will be installed in it, then the recess should be sufficient for mounting and connecting it. In such a situation, the recess should be at least 30 cm. If the design has a purely decorative function, then 10-15 cm is enough.

  • if it is planned to make a partition, then we apply the parameters of the room on a scale to the drawing in order to correctly assess the dimensions of the structure in relation to the entire room.

The drawing will help you correctly assess the scope of work and buy required amount materials.

Tools and materials you will need

Drywall niches can be easily made only if you have the following set of tools:

Necessary tools

  • perforator and drill;
  • building level, tape measure and pencil;
  • spatula and sandpaper;
  • special fasteners, dowels and screws.

In addition, you should purchase the following materials:

  • drywall sheets;
  • guides and rack profiles;
  • sickle, putty and primer.

Today the best manufacturer drywall and all finishing materials for it is considered the German company Knauf.

Preparation for work

The list of preparatory operations that must be carried out before installing the niche frame in a plasterboard wall includes:

  • remove all irregularities from the working surface;
  • treat the wall with a primer;
  • mark the wall using a previously created drawing.

Note! We apply the markup, focusing on the level. Otherwise, the niche device may turn out to be crooked and uneven.

Frame installation

Many people ask the question "how to make a niche in the wall"? To do this, you first need to create metal carcass.
The frame is made as follows:

  • we apply a guide profile to the drawn lines and drill a hole in the wall and in the profile with a perforator;
  • fasten the profile to the screws;
  • in a similar way we form the entire perimeter of the structure;
  • then mounts the rack profiles to the finished frame. We also fasten them with self-tapping screws. The length of the rack profiles corresponds to the depth of the niche itself;
  • on the removed rack profiles we fasten the guides with the help of self-tapping screws.

Finished frame

If a partition with niches is needed, then we construct the frame as follows:

  • first, on the floor and ceiling, we mount the base from the guides;
  • then we connect them with vertical guides;
  • where necessary, according to the scheme, we fasten the rack profiles and additional fasteners. The partition structure is ready.

If it is necessary to install additional lighting, after mounting the frame, we carry out the necessary wires.
Now the frame device is ready for further finishing work.

Drywall installation

So, the frame of the drywall niche is ready and now it remains to complete it with the finishing of drywall sheets.
Fastening drywall to a metal frame is carried out as follows:

  • cut sheets of drywall into the desired pieces;
  • we apply them to the frame and fasten them to the screws;
  • first comes finishing the outside and then the inside.

Sheathing the frame with drywall

If the drywall niche has additional lighting, then holes must first be made in the drywall for spotlights. In this case, the installation will proceed as follows:

  • we insert lamps into the prepared places;
  • we connect them to the wiring, which was carried out at the stage of assembling the frame;
  • we fix drywall with lamps to the structure using self-tapping screws.

Now the niche device is ready for final finishing work.

Note! The heads of the self-tapping screws should not protrude above the surface of the drywall sheets or be strongly sunk into them. Otherwise, the final finish will not be very high quality and neat.

Carrying out the final finishing

Finishing is necessary in order to give it a finished and aesthetic appearance. The niche and the interior of the room should be decorated in the same style and complement each other.
The final finish includes:

  • sealing all joints with sickle;
  • smearing the niche with a rough layer of putty;
  • rubbing rough putty to a smooth state;
  • surface treatment of the structure with a deep penetration primer;
  • applying the final putty after the primer has dried. In the presence of roughness, we overwrite them with sandpaper.

Nearly finished design

Now it remains only to bring a niche under the design idea of the room. To do this, it can be painted, wallpapered, overlaid artificial stone or make decorative plaster moldings.
It is quite easy to construct a drywall niche. The main requirement is to follow all the recommendations and not skip a single step. As a result, your creation will become a worthy addition to the interior of the room.

Such a voluminous element of decor allows you to remove many everyday problems without destroying the base. When assembling drywall niches with wall mounting (this is a more correct definition of the essence of the work), various goals are pursued - arranging a place for storing toys (if it is for children), installing household appliances, optimization of usable space, which allows more rational placement of furniture items, additional decoration of the room or otherwise in the room.

There is no need to consider all options, since the specifics of cutting and fixing drywall (and for a niche built by one's own hands, GKL is the most best material) remains unchanged, regardless of the implemented plans of the owner. If the reader understands all the features of each technological stage, then without any difficulties he will be able to make a drywall niche with his own hands according to his own drawings - of any size and configuration. The nuances of designing and assembling the box is the topic of the proposed article.

Preparatory activities

Drafting

No one will work "blindly". Therefore, you need to choose a place and take all the necessary measurements, taking into account the volume of the niche and the convenience of attaching its frame to the wall, not only with your own hands, but also with the help of the tool available in the house. Especially for such a one-time job, it is hardly reasonable for the owner of a city apartment to acquire, for example, a “grinder”.

The remains of the material after cutting it are, as a rule, extra costs. And whether cutting profiles, slats or small fragments of gypsum boards will be useful in the household is unknown and unlikely. All necessary for homemade Niche materials are sold in the form of blanks in standard sizes.

To reduce the amount of waste, it is desirable to correlate them with the dimensions of the place where the structure is supposed to be installed, thereby optimizing costs. Therefore, the design features depend on the products (samples) that are supposed to be purchased. By the way, it is this nuance that is often not taken into account if something is done in the house with your own hands.

The dimensions of the niche compartments in those places where it is supposed to install household appliances (for example, a TV set) on the shelves should be several more sizes technology. This is due to the need for natural cooling of the equipment in the operating mode. Otherwise, overheating and equipment failure are inevitable.

Material selection

For frame

There are few options for a niche - wood or metal profiles. From the point of view of practicality, it is better not to mess with a tree, regardless of the specifics of the room. The main reason is that it gradually dries out, and changes in humidity and temperature affect it. As a result, the entire structure will “lead” over time.

And since drywall, by definition, is a rather brittle material, it takes a long time for a niche, the frame of which is assembled from wooden slats, will not stand still.

It happens differently, so it’s wiser to opt for aluminum - the weight is less, and the workpieces are cheaper, and the processing is easier (since the material is soft).

For lining a niche

There are several for sale. One thing is certain - for a niche it is necessary to choose products of the "moisture resistant" category. But in terms of thickness, one should focus not only on the shape and dimensions of the box, but also on the purpose of the shelves. If something massive is not supposed to be placed on them, then arched drywall is quite enough. Its thickness is less than analogues of the ceiling and wall (about 6 mm), respectively, and the cost is lower.

The order of construction of a niche

Wall marking

Nothing complicated - a drawn drawing is projected onto it (taking into account the scale).

Foundation preparation

There is no need to talk about her thoroughness, since the niche will close all the flaws. But in order to evaluate the convenience of fastening in this particular place, you should attach a profile rail to the wall and see how tightly it fits, and if there are any significant distortions. If necessary, at least partial alignment will have to be done. The technique is selected depending on the size of the defect.

It is easy to bring down the bulge (chisel + hammer), seal it into the recess with a solution. In some cases, to give the profile the correct position, wedges, linings, and the like can be used during its fastening.

Laying el / wiring

If it is decided to highlight a niche, then about the connection method lighting fixtures need to think ahead.

Recommendation - in order not to gouge the wall under the gate, you can put the main part of the line under the plinth. By the way, plastic products are just designed for secret laying of wire (cable) communications. Comfortable and modern.

Frame assembly

The specifics of the work depends on the dimensions of the future niche.

If the box is small, and the base for mounting is fairly even, then it is more convenient to assemble the frame first, and then fix it on the wall.

What to consider - when assembling the skeleton of the box, one cannot do. To check the correct geometry of the niche frame, it is advisable to use a square. It is easy to make it yourself, and the length of the "rays" of this device should be commensurate with the smallest side of the mounted three-dimensional form. Then the total value of inevitable measurement errors will be reduced to a minimum.

A niche of impressive dimensions is mounted in parts, like any prefabricated structure. According to the markup, the carrier profiles are attached. They also serve as guides. It depends on how accurately (in accordance with the drawing) and reliably they will be fixed on the wall. appearance niches and its stability under load.

Recommendation - if the niche is designed in such a way that it reaches the floor, then you should not be limited to just wall mounting the rails. At the bottom, they should all be “fastened” (if possible) to the floorboards as well. Such installation will give the entire assembly additional stability.

All that remains is to assemble the niche frame from individual parts (sections of the metal profile) and check its geometry and resistance to deformation.

Plasterboard sheathing

Fragments of the required dimensions and geometry are prepared in advance. Immediately after cutting, each should be tried on at the place of its installation. If necessary, adjust to the required size. At the same stage, drilling holes for self-tapping screws is also performed.

What to consider when sheathing

  • The heads of the niche fasteners must be recessed into the drywall sheet. Therefore, chamfers are necessarily made with a larger diameter drill.
  • How will it be produced finishing niches. Based on this, the need and method for sealing the joints of sheets in the corners is determined. There are several options for this work. Since it is unlikely that it will be possible to make cutting ideal with your own hands, you can remove a part of the gypsum along the edges (in the form of a chamfer). After joining the GKL fragments, the seams formed on the surface of the niche can be easily filled with putty, leveled and sanded. Additionally, it is recommended to stick a serpentine tape on top and paint over with a thin layer.

niche finishing

If the niche is supposed to be painted to match the walls, then its surface should be prepared. Firstly, the paint on the “clean” drywall will lie poorly, and secondly, it will partially soak into the gypsum, and the sheet will swell. Therefore, it is advisable to first process the entire box with finishing putty. Its difference from analogues is that all solid fractions in the composition of the mixture are microscopic. After leveling such a coating, it is polished with the finest sandpaper.

For all other types of finishes (for example, wallpapering), all sides of the niche should be treated with a primer. It will significantly increase the adhesion of surfaces and provide a stronger bonding of the cladding.

If it is necessary to equip a backlight in a separate compartment of a niche, then it is more expedient to use (cords). Installing spotlights is a more complicated process. First, you have to drill drywall. Second, count optimal power light bulbs. In addition, the tapes can be shifted at any time by changing the lighting and design of the room. You won’t be able to experiment with lamps in this way, except by turning off one or more of them.

When using lamps with light bulbs, the circuit should be powered through a step-down Tr (36, 24 or 12 V). More high voltage, given that the frame of the niche is metal, it is not recommended to use it.

When arranging a niche with your own hands, do not be afraid to experiment. There is no standard for such prefabricated structures. If desired, swing or sliding doors can be made in separate compartments.

How are drywall niches assembled: simple instruction, plus a photo report

A very popular solution is a niche at the head of the bed.

Hello readers of my blog. Today you will learn how to make drywall niches in the living room for TV and other equipment. However, those structures, the assembly of which I will discuss later, can be installed with equal success both in the living room and in the bedroom, in the kitchen for the refrigerator and in other rooms where this is necessary.

A distinctive feature of those structures, which I will discuss later, is the simplicity and short assembly time. And this means that you are guaranteed to cope with it.

A few words about niches and their assembly

Making a niche in the wall with your own hands, using traditional building materials, such as brick, is very difficult, and it will take a lot of time to complete the project. The situation is quite different if, as building material use GKL. After all, a gypsum board reinforced with two layers of cardboard is simply cut and also easily attached to the supporting frame with self-tapping screws.

Several varieties are on sale. drywall sheet. Some varieties are moisture resistant, others are ordinary and their price is more affordable. Drywall also differs in standard sizes, and above all, in the thickness of the sheet.

What to choose from this variety so that the drywall niche is durable and looks good?

It all depends on the purpose for which the quick-assembly structure is assembled. For example, a niche for curtains or a similar structure that will be used exclusively as a decorative element, can be assembled from thin plasterboard with a thickness of 6.5 mm. Such material is widely used for cladding walls and ceilings, and therefore is not designed for significant mechanical loads.

If you are going to have a niche in the bathroom or a TV stand built into the wall, I recommend using a sheet with a thickness of 9 mm or more. Such dimensions provide the sheathing with high resistance to mechanical stress, which is important if the plasterboard structure is assembled under a large-screen TV.

If drywall niches are assembled in rooms with excessive humidity, it is advisable to use not ordinary drywall, but gypsum-fiber sheet, which does not have surface paper reinforcement and is more resistant to moisture.

Two types of materials can be used to assemble the supporting frame:

  • Wooden slats and bars - perfect solution if for some reason you are afraid or do not know how to work with mounting metal structures;
  • Metal galvanized profile - allows you to quickly assemble light metal structures of any complexity, the price of which will be slightly lower than the cost of wooden counterparts.

Comparing the characteristics of the listed materials, we will use a metal profile and gypsum board with a thickness of 6.5 mm to assemble the niche, taking into account the fact that we will assemble a decorative niche.

Installation of drywall construction

Now we will learn how to make a drywall niche with our own hands. Assembly instructions are as follows:

  • We measure the mounting surface, in this case the wall, and, in accordance with the measurements and our preferences, we make a drawing;

  • With the help of putty, we completely level the wall, since at the end of the installation it will be very difficult to align the niche openings;

  • We grind the surface leveled with putty and cover it with a primer to prevent dusting;

  • By using laser level(if this is not the case, we use a spirit level and a plumb line), in accordance with the prepared drawing, we apply markings on the mounting surface, along which the profile will be attached to the wall;

  • With the help of a tinted lace, we connect the marking points to the perimeter along which the installation will be carried out;
  • In accordance with the markup, the required number of profiles of a suitable length;
  • In the profile, according to the diameter of the prepared screws, we drill through holes at a distance of 20 cm from each other;
  • The pieces of the profile prepared in this way are applied to the wall according to the markings made;

  • By inserting a pencil into the holes, we transfer the location of the holes to the mounting surface;
  • According to the marks made, we drill holes to the depth and width of the dowel;

  • We fasten the perimeter of the crate to the mounting surface;
  • Using cutting pliers, we install vertical racks that will be pushed forward relative to the wall;
  • All connections that were made with cutting pliers are strengthened with self-tapping screws;
  • We cut strips of drywall in width equal to the distance at which the front of the niche will protrude forward from the wall;

  • We fix the prepared strips perpendicular to the wall along the perimeter of the niche;
  • From the inside of the fixed plasterboard strips, at a distance of no more than 50 cm from each other, we fasten reinforcing jumpers that will make the end part of the structure more rigid;

  • We also strengthen the sidewalls of the frame with jumpers installed perpendicular to the wall;

  • We cut and fasten the longitudinal jumpers;

I recommend that before proceeding with the sheathing of the frame with drywall, take a few photos of the assembled metal structures. As a result, it will be easier for you to navigate the location of the profiles to which the GKL will be attached.

  • We cut a vertical stand and jumpers 20 cm long;

  • From these blanks we assemble the front sidewall of the niche frame, as shown in the photo;

  • Similarly, we assemble the frame of the front part around the entire perimeter of the opening;

  • We assemble the frame on which the LED strip will be attached;

  • We completely sheathe the transverse opening of the side console with drywall;
  • We completely sheathe the side console with a solid sheet;

  • Then, with a hacksaw, we cut out a rectangle according to the markings made and open the opening;

  • We sheathe the front edge of the frame on which the backlight will be mounted;

  • We sheathe the lower part of the frame, which remained open;

  • After the whole structure is assembled, we check that the seams between the pieces of drywall are cut at an angle of 45 °, and we also look that the heads of the self-tapping screws do not protrude above the surface;
  • We prepare the putty mixture;

  • We glue the technological gaps with a sickle and align the seams;
  • We completely plaster surfaces sheathed with drywall;

  • After the putty has completely dried, the surface is sanded and primed for subsequent painting.

So, I told you how to make a niche in the opening of which you can install a large mirror or push in a sofa, wardrobe or another. I offered a photo report on the work done so that you have a general idea of \u200b\u200bhow to work with drywall and metal profiles. Now that you know how to work, I suggest that you familiarize yourself with examples of niches in the interior.

Examples of niches in the interior

I'll start with an unfinished, but very interesting project. The design, which you can see in the next photo, is certainly suitable for small spaces.

It will be possible to place a lot of modern household appliances in a niche, such as a thin TV, a small stereo system, etc. The only obvious disadvantage of this design is that it is very difficult to assemble due to the large number of small parts.

The following photo shows a similar design, but with a smaller size, and with a built-in backlight. This technique is perfect for a bedroom or living room.

In this case, the niche is made not as a functional, but as a decorative element on which you can place lighting fixtures, photo frames and various trinkets. That is, a niche is, in fact, a large beautiful lamp in the interior.

This niche attracts decoration made with wallpaper. The layout of the lighting fixtures is interestingly implemented. But, unlike the first example, this design is not functional, but serves as a decorative element of the interior.

At the end of the review, I suggest that you familiarize yourself with an example of a functional, well-made design, combined with a tastelessly implemented illumination color scheme. If you do not pay attention to the flashy lighting, we can assume that such a niche will be a great addition to a child's room or living room.

Conclusion

From this article, you learned that with your own hands, with the help of a very affordable tool, you can assemble good drywall niches in the bedroom, living room, kitchen and other rooms.

I hope that the proposed photo report with instructions will be useful to you and you will be able to assemble something similar. If you have any problems during assembly, ask questions in the comments - I guarantee an answer!

In the repair and decoration of residential premises, a person’s desire for beauty is expressed in different ways - some want to decorate their home finishing materials incredible colors, others focus on designer furniture, and still others prefer the structural elements of an apartment or house. In principle, both of them are partly right, all these methods are designed to improve the comfort of the premises and create coziness in them. But few people understand the fact that the greatest results are achieved exclusively in the process of using all methods at the same time - an apartment or house should have good furniture, and high-quality beautiful surfaces of walls, floors, ceilings, and, of course, decorative structural elements. We will talk about one of them in this article, in which, together with the site, we will deal in detail with the question of how do-it-yourself drywall niches are made, what material is needed for this and what tools are used to create them.

Do-it-yourself drywall niche photo

How to make a drywall niche: frame device

As with all plasterboard products, the frame is the main component of the entire structure - it is on it that the shape, rigidity, reliability and even the appearance of the finished product depend. The end result completely depends on how responsibly you approach the construction.

To build a drywall niche frame, you will need three types of materials - these are ud guide profiles, with which the structure is tied to the walls and the contours of the product are formed, cd profiles, designed to stiffen the structure, and a sheet thickness of 12.5 mm (better moisture resistant, but you can also normal).

How to make a drywall niche frame with your own hands

Before you start working, you must have a clear picture of what you want to get in the end - you cannot do without it. You may even have to draw a small sketch or a simple drawing that needs to be transferred to the wall in real size. The drywall outlines drawn on the wall will really make the job easier. You will have to draw everything - every shelf and every bend. The more precisely you do this, the easier it will be to create it.

Guide profiles ud are installed along the drawn contours. Fasten them with dowels and a perforator. There will be no problems with straight sections of the structure, difficulties arise when designing radial surfaces - for their construction you will have to learn how to smoothly bend metal profiles. In principle, this is not difficult - in order to get a smooth arc, the shelves of the guide profile are cut in increments of 50mm. If you do not want to do this work, then purchase a ready-made arched profile, in which the cuts are already laid at the enterprise. In my opinion, this is a waste of money - it is quite simple (within 2 minutes) to cut with a grinder or even with scissors.

How to make a drywall niche photo

Okay, let's move on and give our frame volume. In accordance with the required depth of the niche and drywall shelves on the floor and ceiling, it is also necessary to install guide profiles - their ends, located on opposite surfaces, must lie in a strict vertical level. Together with the volume of the structure, the front plane of the plasterboard niche is simultaneously set, which must be perfectly flat.

Do-it-yourself installation of a drywall niche photo

Now let's take a look at the formation of corners - as a rule, they are made from two guide profiles twisted together. Their shelves should be at an angle of 90 ° relative to each other. These corner pieces are installed vertically and are inserted into the top and bottom profile, located respectively on the ceiling and floor. It is imperative to check the level of their installation in two planes at once (on the front and side surfaces). If everything is in order, then you can safely fasten the guide profiles and the corner post to each other - for this, self-tapping screws ø3.5mm by 7.5mm are used (popularly they are called "texes" or "fleas").

Having given volumetric outlines to the frame, at the next stage, a drywall niche with your own hands will require you to make it rigid. Hoping that drywall will cope with this task is not worth it. The frame is strengthened simply - for this, the cd carrier profile is used. It is cut into small pieces, the length of which corresponds to the distance between two opposite guides, inserted across them and fastened with two texes on each side. Again, do not forget to control the level and plane of the resulting surface. Such a reinforcement of cd load-bearing profiles on the side faces of the structure will need to be installed with shelves in different directions - in addition to giving rigidity to the frame, they additionally serve as the basis for screwing drywall. And you have to twist it in such products both inside and outside the niche.

After the frame of the drywall niche is reinforced, you can begin to form the shelves. The principle of their manufacture is almost the same as the one described above. First, with the help of ud, a level and self-tapping screws, the plane of the shelf is set, after which it is reinforced with load-bearing profiles located shelves up and down every 300mm.

Most craftsmen (and I am one of them) practice gypsum sheathing along with the manufacture of the frame. Before installing the shelves, the entire internal cavity of the niche is sheathed with drywall - believe me, it is easier to fix one large sheet than to pervert over its individual pieces. And the design due to this approach acquires additional rigidity.

Do you know the golden rule of drywall? Fewer joints - less headache later. This principle applies to all products, including drywall niches.

In addition, this approach to business will help diversify this tedious and monotonous work a little.

An important point in the process of creating decorative niches from drywall is its illumination and noise reduction - all this must be considered at the stage of manufacturing the frame. It is necessary to determine the location of the lamps and lay the necessary electrical cables, and fill the entire internal space of the frame mineral wool. In principle, if you are satisfied with a sonorous hum even with light impacts of objects on a niche, you can refuse noise reduction - some people put up with this phenomenon perfectly, and some are annoyed.

Installation of a drywall niche: frame sheathing

This stage of forming a drywall niche is quite simple and does not have any special nuances, with the exception of a few, which we will consider below.

  1. Firstly, this is the docking of individual parts of drywall. At the junction of individual parts sheet material it is necessary to install additional stiffeners, to which two separate pieces of drywall are screwed. If you ignore this nuance, then during operation you will get a crack in this place, even despite the high-quality sealing of the seams.
  2. Secondly, the absence of which again leads to the appearance of cracks. At the joints of individual sheets of drywall on their cut edges, it is necessary to chamfer.
  3. Thirdly, this is the step of installing self-tapping screws. It is standard and is 150-200mm.

Well, in conclusion, I would like to pay a little attention to decorating a niche, or rather, preparing for this process. If you think that you can refuse to putty on it, then you are deeply mistaken - a drywall niche does not provide for puttying in only one case, when it is lined or tiled. It is this stage of manufacturing a drywall niche that is the most time-consuming - you will have to install a huge number of perforated corners, lay dozens of meters of reinforcing mesh in the corners and at the joints and putty even the smallest cavities with high quality.
