No residential or public space is complete without doors for various purposes. Quite often, these doors are made from wood or modern wood substitutes (laminate, MDF, veneer).

Due to its natural specifics, a wooden door cannot remain flawless for a long period.

Any wooden door requires the right approach to the choice of coating material.

The moment comes when you have to change old design for a new product. Only not everyone can afford to replace all doors or the quality of the old door is so good that it can be given new life... Then a legitimate question arises - how to cover a wooden door. The answers may vary. It depends on what you want to see in the end result. Consider the techniques and materials most available for independent use.

Giving new life to an old wooden door

Most often, the question of how to cover a wooden door arises from the owners of old interior structures, which the apartment got from the moment of construction.

Don't rush to throw away your old wooden doors. They have a solid construction and can serve for more than one year with the right approach.

Perennial paint layers begin to crack, crumble, the facade design does not fit into the new modern interior... The time has come for a major restoration of the wooden sheet and box. The main requirement is to prepare the structure for a new decorative coating. After thorough cleaning, a base coat must be selected to know what work needs to be done before covering the wooden door. For coating, you can choose paint, varnish or stain. The sequence of work will be the same. The only difference is the finish layer and the drying time of the surface.

Staining an old wooden door

If the decision is made not to buy, but to cover old door paint, the choice must be made between two types of paint:

    • alkyd enamel;
  • acrylic enamel.

The choice of paint dictates the sequence of further actions.

    • Alkyd paint dries within two days, has a very pungent odor, which does not bring comfort to you or your family members. The only advantage is the fact that alkyd enamel is resistant to abrasion, does not require varnishing, if a glossy composition is chosen, it is affordable.

If you or family members are prone to allergies, acrylic paint should be preferred for covering a wooden door.

Thinking about how to cover a wooden door, do not forget to buy a primer for wood and putty.

Putty and wood primer will be needed to prepare the door for paint or varnish.

These funds will be needed to prepare the canvas for subsequent painting.

Having considered the properties of two types of enamel, we will get acquainted in detail with all the stages of returning an old wooden door to a new life.

How to cover a wooden door: instructions for working with paint

If an old wooden door is chosen for the interior space, then all work must begin with the purchase of materials and tools.

What needs to be prepared:

for removing old paint

    • putty knife;
    • sandpaper of different fractions;
    • a rag;
  • construction hair dryer, if the paint is poorly removed.

to prepare the canvas

    • putty for wood;
    • primer for wood;
  • roller or brush.

for painting

    • enamel of a suitable color and composition;
    • brush, roller, sponge;
    • wood varnish;
  • protective agent for the face, hands.

Stages of work on the renovation of a wooden door:

    1. The door must be removed from its hinges, because it is difficult to perform a high-quality coating of the leaf in a hanging position. There is no way to get to all sides of the facade without problems, the paint will run down with smudges, the fittings will be stained with finishing materials, which will affect their external and functional qualities.
    1. Prepare a mat on the floor to prevent contamination of the flooring. If you are using formulations with a pungent smell, then, if possible, do all work on the street or balcony to reduce the presence of odors in the room.
    1. Place the canvas on the prepared surface and remove all accessories. The fittings may need to be updated too.
    1. We proceed to remove the old coating. Remember that wood is soft and can be easily damaged. Therefore, proceed with caution. Some experts advise using special removers to remove old paint. You can use these tools, but after having studied their composition and effect on the wood flooring. If you find it difficult to peel off the paint, you can use heating elements that will soften the paint and allow you to remove all of it without residue.
    1. Inspect the canvas and remove any defects that have arisen with sandpaper, putty or wax-based mastic.
    1. After drying, the surface must be sanded again to remove any irregularities that may appear during the application of the finishing coat of paint.
    1. We proceed to applying paint according to the instructions on the package. It depends on the type of enamel chosen.

Let's take a closer look at how to properly varnish a wooden door, because it can be used as a basis for restoration.

Choosing a varnish for covering a wooden door, the specifics of applying glue to the surface

If the staining method does not suit you, or you do not need to cover the old door, but a new one, but without finishing, then to maintain the natural texture and shade of wood, varnish fit better Total. But you need to choose the right varnish, because each surface has its own composition.

Varnish and any other means applied simultaneously to the canvas must have the same properties.

The assortment of varnish can confuse the uninformed person. Some formulations have a very pungent odor, while others are light. There are several types of varnish:

    • Alkyd - the base is a solvent that has a pungent odor. The varnish is water resistant. When correct application give light wood yellow tint. Dries up within one day. A hardener can be added to improve the properties.
    • Nitrolac - similar in composition to the first option. Dries quickly. For even application, it is better to use a paint sprayer.
    • Polyurethane varnish is the most resistant to external influences, it stays on the surface longer than other varnishes. But it must be remembered that this varnish can darken the wood if you do not first apply a primer.
  • Acrylic varnish is the most environmentally friendly of all of these, because it is water-based. It does not have a pungent odor, which also commands respect. But acrylic varnish, like acrylic enamel, is less resistant to abrasion. You should not count on long-term preservation of gloss at a wooden door.

The choice is yours.

We varnish the blank door

Many people, trying to save money, buy products without finishing. They are cheaper and can perfectly fit into the interior if you know how to cover a wooden door and how to do it correctly.

The varnished wooden door retains its natural color and texture.

If the workpiece is not intended for painting (a panel with a white matte finish), then select a varnish of the desired composition so as not to spoil the canvas.

    1. Basically, door blanks are sold in a polished form, but do not be too lazy to check the entire surface for chips, dents, roughness, which the varnish will show even more. Deal with defects if necessary.
    1. Apply a coat of primer and let it dry. The primer will protect the wood surface from darkening.
  1. We proceed to applying varnish, after stirring it and pouring it into a jar. It is necessary to apply varnish quickly, with cross movements, without smudges. Slowness is useless here. The varnish quickly adheres to the surface. The more strokes, the less even the layer will be. This will lead to additional processing from streaks. The varnish must be applied in three to four layers, allowing each layer to dry.

Your efforts will be visible in the end result - a beautiful glossy canvas in a natural shade of wood will perfectly fit into the interior of any room.

You can varnish not only a new wooden door, but also an old varnished canvas. The restoration begins with a thorough cleaning of the old coating. The process is similar to working with a painted old door, excluding the enamel painting step. Craftsmen advise to use more toxic varnishes for long-term use of lacquered doors, because they are more resistant to abrasion.

Let's not forget about the stain

Stain is still appropriate for covering a wooden door. If you want to change the natural shade of the wood, the stain will do the job very well. Any wood lends itself to staining. The shade depends on the intensity of application of the composition to the surface. The more stain, the more the natural shade changes. But you need to do everything carefully to avoid dark spots or smudges on the door.

When installing new wooden doors in the bath, you should immediately take care of their protection from negative influences. Steam, heat, drafts from ventilation contribute to wood damage, deformation and loss of visual appeal. Painting doors will help to avoid this - a simple and effective way. Most importantly, choose the right paint and apply it correctly.

Paints and varnishes are classified as follows:

  • by type - varnishes, paints and impregnations (oil, wax, stains, penetrating and film-forming);
  • by chemical composition - on an organic basis and water;
  • by method of application - internal, external and combined;
  • in terms of protective effects - from temperature and humidity fluctuations, from mechanical damage, from chemical and organic irritants.

In addition, all coatings are divided into transparent and opaque. The former include varnishes, glazes and oil impregnations, the latter - paints and enamels made on acrylic, alkyd, polyurethane and oil bases.

Wood treatment compound typeBasic properties
Suitable for painting interior and exterior doors, has high moisture resistance. Transparent, emphasizes the structure of the wood. Disadvantage: long drying time.
Safe for health, suitable for any wood, quick-drying. Provides high protection against ultraviolet radiation, gives the surface increased resistance to dirt and moisture.
The most harmless to health, non-flammable, used indoors. Not suitable for exterior doors. Preserves the natural texture of the wood and its original color.
Easy to apply, it penetrates well into wood, gives wood a darker shade. It is used for processing before painting.
Penetrates deep into wood, perfectly protects against moisture, fungus and dirt. Provides additional strength and a pleasant gloss to the surface.
It is used for external and internal surfaces, creates a durable dense coating with water-repellent properties. Has a high hiding power with a glossy or matte effect.
It is easy to apply, has a low hiding power, thanks to which it retains the wood texture. It has high air permeability, therefore it allows the tree to "breathe".

Opaque paint for bathroom doors is used less often, since the natural pattern of wood fits more harmoniously into the interior. Traditionally, the interior decoration of the bath is made of wood, so doors with a pronounced texture look more advantageous.

But if tiles are used for wall decoration, you can make the doors monochromatic by choosing the appropriate color.

When using paint, preliminary surface treatment with antiseptic impregnation and fire retardant is required if the door is in a steam room. It is advisable to choose all products from one manufacturer, this will improve their interaction and make the coating better.

The optimal choice for bathroom doors are alkyd-based varnishes and paints, the main advantages of which are resistance to temperature fluctuations and water resistance.

And one more thing: paints and varnishes should be purchased only in specialized stores where storage conditions, especially temperature conditions, are observed.

How to paint new doors

Untreated wood absorbs moisture well, and if you put new doors in the bathhouse without impregnation protective compounds, they will swell very soon and stop closing tightly. Therefore, before installing the doors, they must be properly prepared and painted. All work should be carried out indoors so that no dust gets on the paint.

Step 1. The door leaf without handles, hooks and hinges is laid on a flat, stable surface. During the manufacturing process, the material was already amenable to grinding, but small roughness or protrusions could remain. Therefore, using a grinder or sandpaper, the doors are processed again on both sides and at the ends. Remove all irregularities, wipe dust off the canvas.

Step 2. If paint is chosen for the doors, the canvas is first impregnated with a primer. Depressions are processed first, then flat areas. Since the doors are in a horizontal position, drips do not form and the absorption is more even.

Step 3. Allow the surface to dry completely and re-treat it.

Step 4... Now you can paint. For a panel door, a roller is more suitable, for a paneled door, use a narrow brush. The paint should not be too thick, if so, thin it with solvent. Do not apply the paint in a thick layer, the quality of the coating will only lose from this. Depending on coverage, it may take 2 to 4 coats of paint, each completely dry before applying the next.

Step 5. While the door is drying, paint the opening. It is impossible to leave it unprocessed for the same reason as the doors; moreover, a painted door in an unpainted opening does not look very harmonious.

After the paint has dried, hinges, a handle, a hook are screwed onto the door and installed in the opening.

If a stain is chosen for the door, do not use a primer. The stain penetrates deeply into the wood, coloring the fibers and increasing the protective properties of the material. There are several ways to apply the stain, which will give different results.

WayDescription
Trituration.This method requires a stain with a long drying time. Using a roller, the composition is applied to the door leaf and carefully rubbed with a foam rubber swab or a piece of dense fabric. It is necessary to rub with effort, centimeter by centimeter, so that the liquid penetrates well into the pores of the tree. The painted surface has a very pronounced pattern.
Spraying.The stain is chosen in light colors and 2-4 layers are applied using a spray gun. This method of staining gives less pronounced texture, but perfectly hides minor wood defects.
Regular application.Suitable for flat surfaces. The stain is applied with a roller, as a result of which the surface is painted evenly and has no streaks.
Staining with a brush.Apply generously with a wide brush, first along the fibers, then across. Thanks to this method, the tree acquires a deeper and more intense shade.

Council. To avoid discrepancies in color, the stain should be purchased with a margin and mixed well in a jar before use. Coloring pigments tend to settle to the bottom, as a result of which, when painting doors, one part may differ in tone from the rest.

Using oil or wax impregnation

Processing of doors with oil impregnation also has its own secrets. Improper application may result in streaks and darker areas. Stir the impregnation very well before use, and do this several times during work. Impregnation is applied in any convenient way - with a roller, brush, spray or foam sponge. The number of layers depends on the porosity of the material.

So, take a little of the product and distribute it evenly over the surface from edge to edge. It is more convenient to do this along the width of the door leaf. Next, the impregnation is carefully rubbed with a brush or rolled out with a roller, avoiding sagging. The surface dries from 8 to 12 hours, depending on the composition and air temperature. The second layer is applied no later than 24 hours later, otherwise it will not be able to absorb well and its protective properties will decrease.

Painting old doors

Old doors in the bath can also be revived and made no less attractive than new ones. Although this process is more laborious, everyone can cope with it. For convenience, the door must be removed from its hinges and laid horizontally, but if for some reason it is not possible to remove it, you will have to work like this.

Step 1. The door leaf is removed from the hinges, laid on a flat surface. Unscrew handles, hinges, remove locks. If you can't unscrew it, wrap them with tape or foil.

Step 2. Using an abrasive nozzle, remove all layers of old paint to the base.

If there are putty areas, the putty is also cleaned off completely. There is one more convenient way remove paint: the top layer of the coating is heated with a building hair dryer until the paint begins to swell, and then clean it off with a metal spatula.

Step 3... Pieces of paint and dust are swept from the canvas, after which the surface is carefully sanded. IN hard-to-reach placesah it is convenient to use sandpaper. After grinding, there should be no rough areas, small irregularities, scratches.

Grinding the door leaf

Step 4. They carefully inspect the door from all sides, check the tightness of the joints, if necessary, strengthen the frame with metal corners and self-tapping screws.

Step 5. The resulting gaps and cracks must be repaired with new filler. Putty is suitable for any color under alkyd paint, it will not shine through anyway. If the surface is planned to be treated with oil impregnation, wax or varnish, the shade of the putty must match the color of the door leaf.

Council. If the wood has darkened strongly from time to time, it can be bleached a little: bleach is mixed with water in a 1: 3 ratio and the surface is abundantly moistened. When it brightens, the door is washed well with clean water and air dried.

Sanding dry putty

Step 8... Wipe the cloth from dust from all sides with a damp cloth. Next, cover the door with a uniform layer of primer. Instead of the usual primer, you can take an antiseptic impregnation. The joints and grooves must be treated especially carefully.

Step 9. For staining, you need a thin brush and roller.

When the primer is dry, take a brush and paint all the lintels, recesses, decorative overlays, panels first. Further, with the help of a roller, even wide areas are painted.

The paint is applied in a thin and even layer, carefully rubbed in one direction. The second layer can be applied no earlier than the first dries. In this case, the upper layer is always applied perpendicular to the lower one, that is, if the first layer was applied along the width of the doors, then the second must be done longitudinally. It is especially important to follow this rule when using a brush that leaves behind strokes.

Step 10... Leave the canvas to dry, start painting the door frame in the opening. Here it is exactly the same: a thin brush is used at the joints, and a roller is used on flat areas.

If the door is not removed from the hinges, for convenience it is fixed with wooden wedges on both sides so that there is maximum access to all parts of the leaf. The wedges should be fixed as tightly as possible, otherwise the blade may move during operation. All further actions are performed in the same way. When painting, be careful not to drip. Handles and hinges, other parts of the fittings should also be cleaned of dirt, sanded, and re-lubricated for ease of movement.

When treating doors with wood stain, it should be borne in mind that splashes on clean wood remain dark spots, which shine through 2-3 layers of dye. Therefore, if you are painting a door that has not been removed from its hinges, it is recommended to apply the stain very carefully and from the bottom up. The roller or brush should not be dipped too much into the liquid to avoid dripping. A canvas with streaks and dark spots looks sloppy even under a layer of varnish.

From using water-based stains wood fibers tend to straighten, from which the surface becomes rough. To eliminate such a defect, sanding with fine-grain sandpaper will help. After the secondary treatment with stain, the canvas remains smooth.

Video - Door staining technology

Wooden doors look aesthetically pleasing and sophisticated. There are many opportunities to buy a blank for painting or varnishing. It's cheap and practical. You can paint the old product in the desired tone to match the interior. Many people wonder what they cover with solid wood doors. There are many upgrade options. The only thing that is necessary is to adhere to the technology of preparing the canvas and painting.

Solid pine surface covered with enamel

Features of painting door leaves

It often happens that old doorways have a good frame and leaf, but have lost their original luster. An affordable, simple renovation method is considered to be coating with dyes. Any person can handle such work. It is enough to know the properties of paintwork materials from which the doors are made. Attention is paid to compliance with the technology of painting structures:

  • Paneled canvases. Before painting, they are disassembled into elements, since the number of joints leads to wear, requires updating.
  • Solid wood: heavy structures that convey the natural structure of the tree. For renovation, varnish is taken, paint for such doors under a tree.

With varnish application
  • MDF. It is easy to paint the structure, but before that, the surface is carefully prepared.

Choosing a shade of interior door designs

The range of paints makes it possible to embody different design solutions, therefore, how to cover the surface, the question does not arise. Three color trends can be seen in the design: delicate, light shades; bright shades of yellow, red; dark shades. When choosing a color, adhere to the principles:

Shades of paints
  • The shades of chocolate and cherry give luxury and sophistication.
  • Light colors are selected for the bedroom, for the nursery, which create coziness and comfort.
  • Sashes made of solid wood are suitable for a log house.
  • In a room with antique furniture, artificially aged ones look great.
  • The color of the door frame is made darker (lighter) than the walls.

The choice of material for painting

Quality paint is never cheap. Sometimes stores offer discounts on quality paints when their expiration date approaches. If painting is carried out immediately after purchasing the paint and varnish material, then this option will save money without reducing quality.

Thinking about what wooden doors from solid wood are covered with, you will need knowledge about paints and varnishes. The range of paints is divided into: transparent, opaque. The first include impregnations, varnishes, glazes. When processing the canvas with a transparent coating, the natural color, the wood pattern is emphasized. For canvases from an array, varnish is often used. It protects the surface from moisture, different influences... Varnishes are transparent and tinted.

Important. When purchasing a varnish, attention is paid to the drying speed. Better to take a quick-drying paintwork. It does not spread on the surface and is also harmless.

Opaque coatings include alkyd, oil-based coloring materials that have specific features. More often used:

Paint for doorways
  1. Nitro paint. It has aesthetic properties, a wide color palette that surpasses other types of paints. Has strength, durability. But it is harmful to health, its fumes are toxic.
  2. Acrylic. Suitable for use in rooms. When painting, it is well applied, there is no toxic smell. The disadvantages of paint include low strength, high cost. To increase the resistance, acrylic varnish is applied to the paint.
  3. Alkyd enamel. It is affordable, has a wide range of shades, and forms a durable coating. This paint is suitable for wooden doors, it is wear-resistant, economical, and dries quickly. Significant disadvantage: an unpleasant odor lasts for 2 days. This type of paint is not used where allergy sufferers or children live.

Preparatory work before painting

To cover the door with paintwork, some preparatory work must be done. The first step is to prepare the tool:

  • brush;
  • container for paint;
  • rags;
  • gloves;
  • scotch;
  • sandpaper;
  • 4 stools;
  • putty knife.

Be sure to prepare paints and varnishes.

Painting tools

The next step is the preparation of the canvas. It is removed from the awnings, placed horizontally on stools. If the selected paint has a pungent, unpleasant smell, then the work is done on the street. Remove the accessories. Fixed elements are wrapped with paper, tape. The lock is closed with masking tape. In order to properly cover the surface, it is prepared:

Removing the old coating
  1. Remove the old coating of paint, primer using a grinder, sandpaper, solution-remover.
  2. Perform preliminary sanding, which helps remove scratches, paint.
  3. Remove dust, dirt.
  4. They putty imperfections, cracks in wood.
  5. After drying, the cloth is putty with medium-grained, and then fine-grained sandpaper.

Attention. The darkened wood is clarified with a mixture of chlorine bleach and water (3 to 1).

Scheme, order of coating a door with paint

The application of the coloring material on the doors is carried out according to a certain scheme. The shield surface is painted in 3 stages. Better to use a roller. It provides an even application without streaking. Begin to paint from the top from the corner of the door across from left to right. Then, after drying, the second layer is applied along, and the third layer - across.

The paneled door is painted with a brush, starting from the recesses. Make sure that no excess paint remains. After that, the door is painted with a roller in accordance with the scheme for painting the shield surface. For a saturated color, it is painted in 3 layers.

Before varnishing the doors, consider the number of layers. Quality depends on it, appearance... Apply 3 times more often. Each layer is applied after the previous one has dried. The number of layers can be found on the varnish jar itself - information is provided by the manufacturer.

The varnish is applied to the wooden door with a large brush. If patterns are present, then use brushes different sizes... To make the varnished surface even, painting is carried out on a flat surface in the horizontal position of the door.

To varnish, the canvas is placed in a horizontal position

The first (base) layer is made with diluted (water, solvent) varnish along the length of the wood structure. You cannot stop in the process, as dark spots remain. The next layer is applied across, after drying and surface treatment with fine sandpaper. Wooden doors are varnished until a smooth surface is formed.

Attention! If a drop of varnish got on the surface and managed to dry out, then it is better to leave it as it is. Otherwise, you can spoil the appearance.

Pine painting

The advantage of inexpensive pine is the pleasant smell of pine needles, which brings calmness to the house and promotes good sleep. Pine is a wood that is susceptible to environmental influences. Pine will become strong, durable, if painted with the chosen paintwork.

Not all designers in the interior design willingly use a pine door - it has a lot of knots. This deficiency is corrected with a stain, giving a noble shade.

Before painting a pine door, it is putty and polished. Resin drips are removed, the pine door leaf is sanded. To paint pine doors, work must be done:

  • Any pine door is pretreated with sandpaper - sanded.
  • The surface of the pine canvas is cleaned of dust.
  • Pine doors are primed, which promotes uniform paint application, protects the wood from decay. To improve antiseptic protection, a special impregnation is used.
  • Next, a layer of stain of the required shade is applied to the pine door with a roller. Opaque paints are suitable for full color texture.
  • Cover the pine door with varnish.

When coating solid wood doors, do not save time and do not shorten work processes. This turns into an unattractive appearance, the appearance of defects on the surface of the canvas. Therefore, carrying out the main stages of painting from stripping to polishing is an important aspect of it.

The interior of absolutely any room implies the presence of certain of its elements, which are most susceptible to operational loads. These are, in particular, entrance and interior doors, which are used most intensively and are second only to floor coverings in this respect. Due to these circumstances, any door must be protected with a special coating that would ensure its attractive appearance and excellent performance properties for a long time.

Painting protects wood from temperature extremes and high humidity, and also increases its service life.

In the overwhelming majority of cases, such coatings are performed using various paints and varnishes. However, the currently existing huge assortment of a wide variety of paints, enamels and varnishes will certainly confuse a newbie and push a reasonable question: what is the best way to paint a door and how to avoid mistakes? Let's try to consider this issue comprehensively and in detail.

Why do you need to paint doors?

The modern market of building and finishing materials is able to offer the buyer a wide range of ready-made entrance and interior doors that do not need any revision. However, in some cases, staining the door may be necessary. In the same way, you can restore and update an old door, giving it an attractive and original look.

Quite often, people deliberately purchase unpainted wooden doors in order to then refine them on their own in accordance with their own tastes and preferences. In addition, this approach allows you to somewhat reduce the cost of installing doors.

The main advantage of nitro varnishes is their high drying speed.

There are various techniques for painting surfaces, with which you can achieve not only an even glossy or matte finish, but also create various decorative effects in the form of cracking, scuffs, imitation of wood texture, etc.

However, the main purpose of covering the door with paints and varnishes is to protect the latter from:

  • mechanical damage (chips, scratches, abrasions);
  • changes in temperature and humidity;
  • fungus, mold, insect pests.

The most demanding for the quality of the protective coating is a wooden entrance door, especially if it has direct contact with the external atmospheric environment. Before you paint front door, it is very important to correctly select the necessary material.

Classification of paints and varnishes

Exceptional variety of assortment and the widest range color solutions paint and varnish products presented on the shelves of modern stores are able to satisfy the needs of the most demanding customer and allow the most extraordinary design projects to be realized. All paints and varnishes, including those used for painting doors, can be classified as follows:

  • by type: impregnations (stains, etc.), varnishes, paints (enamels);
  • by chemical composition: water-borne or based on organic solvents;
  • by application: for internal works, for outdoor use, universal;
  • by the nature of protection: from changes in humidity and temperature, from mechanical, chemical and other influences.

Various shades of tinted varnish allow you to create wooden surface imitation of valuable wood species.

In addition, the coatings formed with these materials can be transparent or opaque. Transparent coatings form varnishes, glazes and oil impregnations (including drying oil). Are opaque different kinds paints and enamels:

  • oil;
  • alkyd;
  • polyurethane;
  • acrylic;
  • perchlorovinyl.

Each of the above types of paints and varnishes has a number of specific characteristics that ultimately determine the scope of their application.

An important role in the process of painting the door is also played by special primers (primers), which make it possible to create the most even, strong and durable coating.

Coating doors with varnish

It is advisable to use various kinds of transparent and translucent varnishes to cover doors made of solid natural wood and veneered doors.

Transparent varnish allows you to preserve the texture of the wood and even highlight it favorably. This property is especially valuable when processing doors made of valuable wood species. Of course, a door prepared for coating with transparent varnish should not have any defects that spoil the appearance of the product. Translucent (tinted) varnishes are available in a wide variety of colors and shades, allowing to simulate a particular valuable breed when applied.

Most often, 2 main types of varnishes are used:

  • nitrocellulose (NC);
  • pentaphthalic (PF).

A distinctive feature of nitro lacquers is the high drying rate of each layer, which forms a strong film with a low sheen. However, nitro lacquers are quite toxic, and therefore have a limited scope.

Pentaphthalic varnishes are much less toxic, but they also dry much longer (at least a day). When dry, PF varnishes form a durable coating with a pronounced gloss.

Regardless of the type of varnish chosen, the final quality and degree of gloss of the coating will directly depend on the number of layers applied.

Painting doors with enamels and paints

Acrylic washable interior paint is very resistant to abrasion and does not have a characteristic specific odor.

Alkyd resin enamels are the most widespread and popular at present. The reason for this is not only their quite acceptable cost, but also their exceptional versatility in application. The advantages of this paint and varnish material are:

  • high coating strength;
  • frost resistance, resistance to temperature extremes;
  • water-repellent properties;
  • excellent hiding power and high gloss.

Due to the listed qualities, alkyd enamels are used not only indoors. Alkyd enamel can be used to paint the front door in a private house, and not only wooden, but also metal (subject to appropriate preparation). Exceptional hiding power and color saturation make it possible to use alkyd enamels for the restoration of old doors, in order to hide various defects, traces of filling, etc.

However, alkyd enamels are environmentally unsafe and have an extremely unpleasant odor. In addition, they have a long drying time for each layer (at least 10 hours).

Paint-enamel for doors with a plastic effect will allow you to make an imitation of plastic from an old wooden door.

Water-based acrylic paints are completely devoid of such disadvantages. Although it is rightly believed that water-borne paints are unacceptable for painting wooden doors (since they can lead to deformation of the door leaf and distortion of the door), acrylic paints are often used for this purpose. This popularity is due to a number of the following advantages:

  • environmental safety and lack of smell;
  • abrasion resistance;
  • high drying speed;
  • color fastness;
  • long service life.

It is best to paint interior doors with acrylic paints, since they allow atmospheric moisture to pass through, which in conditions of high atmospheric humidity can have undesirable consequences. A significant disadvantage of acrylic paints is their relatively high cost. Considering the fact that acrylic paint is applied, as a rule, in several layers, the cost of painting can increase many times.

Oil paints and enamels made on the basis of drying oils can also be used to paint doors, but are considered morally obsolete. Possessing a high hiding power, they at the same time have a very pungent odor that lasts up to 7 days.

Thus, having wondered how to do it correctly, first of all, you need to decide on what to paint it with. The choice of material for painting should not only take into account its technical and operational characteristics, but also include an aesthetic component.

Wooden doors look noble, aesthetically pleasing and sophisticated! No other door made of any other material can compare with them. Today it is possible to purchase a door blank for painting or varnishing. It is cheaper and more practical. You will be able to lacquer the product in the tone that best suits the interior. An even more economical option is to renew the varnished door. Of course, you need to remove the old coating - sand the surface, which takes time, but this option will be much more economical in terms of money.

The varnish has a transparent structure. This enhances the natural beauty of the wood. Even budget door options, for example, made of pine, acquire a solid, expensive and high-quality appearance after varnishing. The tone of the doors, especially those that lead to the same corridor, should be the same. This creates a complete picture of the interior. Although the interior door from the side of the room can be painted in any tone of paint or varnish that suits the interior.

To paint the door you will need:

  • wood varnish,
  • small brush or roller
  • rags,
  • spatula and putty for wood,
  • grinder,
  • fine and coarse sandpaper,
  • construction hair dryer.

Varnish selection

Varnishes for wood are divided into several types.

  1. Alkyd varnishes are based on solvents. They give the wood a yellowish tint and are waterproof. To speed up the drying process, improve moisture resistance and increase hardness, special hardeners can be added to the composition. Drying time is about 24 hours.
  2. Acrylic varnishes are water-based. They are odorless and non-toxic. To harden the coating, special hardeners can be added, because such a varnish itself is fragile.
  3. Nitrolacs have a significant advantage over their counterparts - they dry quickly. Solvents are used as a base. Nitrolacs are very toxic, so their use is not always justified. By the way, when using nitro varnishes, it is best to use a spray gun.
  4. Polyurethane varnishes are strong. They are distinguished by a dark shade and that is why the door surface is first primed.

Of course, there are many more varnishes for wood, but they are usually not used at home.

All types of varnish have one feature - the more toxic they are, the better their consumer characteristics.

Whatever your choice, painting a door surface with varnish is basically the same. It is more important to understand how to properly prepare the door for varnishing.

Preparing the door

If you have to varnish an old door, then you must first remove a layer of old paint or varnish. Although, if the varnish is well preserved, it is sometimes allowed to apply a new coating over the old varnish. To remove the old coating, use sandpaper and a hair dryer. If the doors are covered with paint, they can be cleaned with a special remover. It is not recommended to perform such actions before varnishing. The thing is that the remover can be absorbed into the wood and affect its color.

Because how well the old coating layer will be removed from the door, its final appearance depends. And this means that it is better to clean the door from the old paint carefully, avoiding damage to the surface.

If you have to apply varnish on new door, then you should first grind all the irregularities. Often sanding paper wrapped around a 25 x 10 cm board is used for this purpose.

Grinding is a crucial stage, so it must be carried out with great care, although it will take a long time. The abrasive fraction of sandpaper is 60-180, and it all depends on how uneven the surface is. For this purpose, a grinding machine can also be used, which will only speed up the process. Cracks and holes are eliminated with a filler matching the color of the wood. The choice of the color of the putty is important - after all, the final appearance of the door will depend on it.

Next, a special impregnation is applied to the door, which protects the wood from bark beetle and mold. To increase the quality of varnish application and reduce its consumption, a primer is used. It is applied with a roller or brush.

The impregnation, primer and varnish must have the same base. Otherwise, due to incompatibility of components, the coating will delaminate. You can eliminate the problem by purchasing impregnation, primer and varnish from one company.

After priming, the door is re-sanded with either 180 sandpaper or a sander. This will remove the remaining irregularities. Grinding places are re-primed. If the varnish does not change the color of the wood much, it can be substituted for the primer. However, the composition is pre-diluted.

After opening a jar with the composition, before varnishing the door, stir it slowly. This condition is important, because only with slow stirring, air bubbles do not form. Pour a small amount of the composition into the tray, after fixing the door horizontally. With the frame, of course, everything is more complicated, which is why when painting it, the drips are simply skinned.

To make the transitions between the layers invisible, it is important to apply the varnish quickly. Layers are applied in an overlapping direction and there should be at least 3 coats. Before proceeding with the next coat, make sure that the previous coat is completely dry. Varnishes have different drying rates, so read the instructions to find out how quickly the composition you purchased dries.

As for the panels, they are usually varnished with a small brush. Smears, sagging and streaks are removed with sandpaper, except for the top layer. While the varnish layer is drying, the roller or brush can be stored in a varnish jar or tightly wrapped bag.

When varnishing, many craftsmen do not remove the handles, but simply wrap them up, although this action is incorrect. This is because the places under the handles also need to be coated with impregnation and primer.

So if you stick to the above simple tips, door varnishing will take place without difficulty and in a short time. Perhaps you have questions about the topic or some notes on the article. We are waiting for your comments.

Video

This video shows an interesting option for restoring a wooden door:

When installing new wooden doors in the bath, you should immediately take care of their protection from negative influences. Steam, high temperature, drafts from ventilation contribute to wood deterioration, deformation and loss of visual appeal. Painting doors will help to avoid this - a simple and effective way. Most importantly, choose the right paint and apply it correctly.

Paints and varnishes are classified as follows:

  • by type - varnishes, paints and impregnations (oil, wax, stains, penetrating and film-forming);
  • by chemical composition - on an organic basis and water;
  • by method of application - internal, external and combined;

Untreated wood absorbs moisture well, and if you put new doors in the bathhouse without impregnation with protective compounds, they will swell very soon and stop closing tightly. Therefore, before installing the doors, they must be properly prepared and painted. All work should be done indoors so that no dust gets on the paint.

This method of staining gives a less pronounced texture, but perfectly hides minor wood defects.

There is another convenient way to remove paint: the top layer of the coating is heated with a construction hairdryer until the paint starts to swell, and then it is scraped off with a metal spatula.

Step 3... Pieces of paint and dust are swept from the canvas, after which the surface is carefully sanded. It is convenient to use sandpaper in hard-to-reach places. After grinding, there should be no rough areas, minor irregularities, scratches.

When treating doors with wood stain, it should be taken into account that dark spots remain from splashes on clean wood, which are visible through 2-3 layers of dye.

Using water-based stains tends to straighten wood fibers, which makes the surface rough. To eliminate such a defect, sanding with fine-grain sandpaper will help. After the secondary treatment with stain, the canvas remains smooth.

Interior doors help to delimit the space, protect rooms from dust, noise, drafts, support uniform design interior. However, over time, the entrance structures lose their usual appearance, which means that painting of the interior doors is required.

Can be painted with any enamel, in particular oil-based products and alkyd paints. Materials dry quickly, have a durable coating, a wide palette of shades. Alkyd enamel, however, has a strong odor that lasts up to 4 days indoors.

Therefore, the restoration of interior structures in a house where there are children is carried out acrylic enamel - This coating is odorless, non-toxic, dries quickly. Acrylic-based paint is sensitive to mechanical damage, therefore it needs to be fixed with varnish.

For MDF canvases, varnishes are suitable - transparent or tinted. They preserve the texture of the material and mask defects. Veneered structures are treated with nitro paints, since this composition tolerates moisture well. It is better to paint with glyphtal and polyurethane compounds.

What and how

Paints and varnishes differ in composition (organic or water based) and application (for internal, external protection against chemical and organic matter, temperature and humidity changes). Coatings also differ in the type of base - impregnation, paints, stains, varnishes.

An opaque very durable coating is created by thick enamels and paints based on polyurethane, liquid acrylic, and perchlorovinyl. This group includes oil-based formulations. Alkyd enamel is the most common method of surface treatment, since it tolerates temperature extremes and is resistant to mechanical damage. Alkyd-based paint is applied to metal, wood.

Surface tinting compounds are represented by various impregnations that penetrate the layers of wood, give the desired shade and protect against external influences. You can paint the interior doors with transparent coatings. These are varnishes (matte or glossy) that protect the wood from moisture. Colored varnishes preserve the wood structure and give the desired shade.

Internal doors from fiberboard are painted with nitroenamels - dense, resistant coatings. For home use, painters recommend lightweight water-based acrylic paints. The materials are suitable for painting with a brush and have good covering power.

Coating and color selection rules

When choosing a paint, it is worth considering the material of the door, its purpose, and the interior design of the room. The canvas can be covered with a dense layer - opaque enamels, synthetic dyes based on polyurethane, perchlorovinyl. In order to give a light tone to the wood, you will need a transparent varnish or stain.

The choice of color for interior designs is determined by the interior of the house. There are three popular dyeing trends - in pastel shades, rich dark tones, bright colors. Doors in a house made of wood are covered with varnish or transparent oil-based impregnation. For classic interiors with antique furniture, the technique of artificial aging of the surface is suitable.

Experts recommend choosing a tone that is different from the tone of the walls for painting the door frame. The enamels used in kitchens and bathrooms must be moisture resistant. If you need odorless paint for interior doors, acrylic-based materials are suitable. All coatings must be intended for indoor use.

Preparatory work

The preparatory stage includes performing several sequential operations. The door is removed from the hinges, then the handles, locks, decorative elements are dismantled. You can remove the old coating chemical composition (it may smell unpleasant). Prepare the surface and grind it with medium-grained sandpaper. After processing, the canvas must be washed and degreased with a solvent.

The door surface is carefully inspected. The detected defects - cracks, chips - are hidden with a putty, leveling the material with a tool. The highest quality surface for painting is after priming. Door elements that do not plan to be painted must be protected with masking tape, tape.

Removing the old coating from the interior structure

Before repainting the door, it is necessary to remove the old enamel with a building hair dryer. Hot air is directed to the old paint layer. After softening the surface, the enamel is removed with a spatula. Pentaphthalic materials and nitro-paints are removed from the surface in layers, oil - softened to a viscous mass. Chemical removers also help in removing old paint. The next stage is grinding the cleaned surface. The work is carried out manually and with the help of a power tool.

Process sequence

In order to paint, it is necessary to complete the work in several stages. Experts recommend carrying out these works in rooms with closed windows, ventilating if necessary. In addition to paint, restoration requires a set of tools: sandpaper, spatula, sponge, putty, solution to remove the old coating. Construction tape, a primer, brushes, rollers, a screwdriver, paint containers, a ladder are also needed.

Prepare paint according to instructions. Then the decorative elements are covered with a paintbrush and the enamel is applied to the surface. It is better to paint the door leaf with a roller, since stripes remain from the brushes. After applying the enamel, dry the door thoroughly. If necessary, you can paint the surfaces in stages in several layers. It is recommended to remove the masking tape after the surface is completely dry. The final stage: after installing handles, locks, latch, the door leaf is hung on the hinges.

Common mistakes

When errors are made that can spoil the result. Defects missed by inattentive inspection of the surface will appear on the surface. If the master has not removed oil stains from the surface before applying fresh enamel, streaks will appear on the fresh paint. To avoid this, the door must be treated with a solvent or acetone, then work is performed on the surface primer. The primer is selected for the appropriate type of paint.

Before painting, it is required to thoroughly clean the room from debris and dust. Even small specks of dust, villi will create irregularities when painting the surface. A mistake will be painting without a respirator and special clothing necessary for the safety of the master.

Work is carried out with closed windows, however, experts advise airing the room when painting large surfaces, since enamels, even odorless, emit harmful substances... Do not rush to paint: even quick-drying paint needs to be dried. The time required for this is indicated on the packaging.

DIY wood painting

Plain standard doors can be transformed by painting the product like natural wood. For surface tinting, paints of two colors are required: main and secondary. The imitation of the oak surface is created by a combination of light brown and chocolate shades, the color of wenge is created by dark red and black paints.

First, the main tone is applied, after drying, artificial scuffs are performed on it using sandpaper. Then the door is covered with an additional shade of paint. After staining, the surface is dried and varnished. Available in clear lacquers or with an aged wood effect.

Thanks to modern technologies, today wooden doors not only look beautiful, but are also of high quality, which is hard not to pay attention to.

But, not everyone can afford to decorate their premises with good-quality doors, because such a product made of natural wood species costs a lot of money. But how a budget option, you can buy a "semi-finished product" - a door made of solid wood, such as oak, wenga or pine (sold, as a rule, with standard sizes), without decorative elements, and with your own hands give an original design to the door leaf, painting the tree with the most suitable paintwork materials.

Unfortunately, to buy a new interior door block owners of apartments with an old layout are more problematic, because the "native" doors have non-standard sizes. In this case, you will have to make doors according to individual order, which will fly into a tidy sum. Therefore, it makes sense to restore the old doors, thereby saving the family budget and giving the apartment uniqueness and originality.

Next, we will tell you how to properly prepare the surface, in what sequence it is necessary to carry out the painting work and what paint to paint the wooden door with so that the final result looks not only good, but also unusual, if the style of the room requires it.

How can wooden doors be painted?

Today the question "How to paint a wooden door in an apartment?" not very relevant, because the market of paints and varnishes is quite diverse. But, before painting the interior wooden door in the house, you need to think about whether you need to preserve the structure of the natural material, or you need to completely mask the wood pattern by painting over the canvas with an opaque layer. Taking your own wishes as a basis, pay attention to the following paintwork materials:

  • Enamels with an opaque base.
  • Oil based paints.
  • Transparent or tinted varnish.
  • Oil-based impregnation.
  • Stain.
  • Other paints and varnishes, which are able to refresh the color of the tree or give a beautiful correct shade.

The table below shows the classification of paintwork materials.

Of course, how to paint an old wooden door is a master's business, but, according to experienced craftsmen, it is worth listening to. Many finishers recommend:

  • Acrylic material based on water (substances that contain acrylic have the most optimal consistency, which is important when working with brushes, and also spread well over the surface);
  • Alkyd material (has a good ability to repel moisture, is not afraid of the sun, frost and abrupt changes temperature regime, dries quickly).

If you need to process the door to the bathhouse, it is better to stay on alkyd paint for outdoor outdoor work, which is less susceptible to adverse factors. Using such material, it will be possible to cover the doors to the house, as well as interior blocks.

Important! Please note that painting doors with alkyd-containing paints can only be carried out on dry surfaces. If the base of the door is damp, the paint will quickly peel off and peel off. And if you need to treat the door with varnish, do not use drying oil, only stain will help you!

If you are racking your brains “how to paint a wooden door in the country or in an apartment?”, You should already understand that the application of paint is carried out in more than one stage. Sometimes, in order to get the desired effect, you have to use different formulations. Initially, specialists use an impregnation that can give a certain tone to the door, after which a decorative layer is applied.

Painting wooden doors (video)

Sequence of work

The door structure is not only the door itself, therefore it is very important to carry out the preparatory process carefully. Of course, you can only repaint the canvas, but this way the jambs will fall out of the overall picture. And so, the process of painting the door should be done in the following sequence:

  • The door structure is removed and placed on a stable surface (as an option - a pair of stools). If for work will be used alkyd paint, it is better to transfer work to the open air, because such paintwork materials have a pungent odor.

  • Then, without removing the canvas itself, it is fixed with wedges so that the paneled brush has access to all hard-to-reach places. It is also necessary to block the doors so that during the drying process the doors do not slam shut and damage the new layer of paint.

Whichever way you go, you still have to dismantle the fittings. If there are non-removable parts, they can be hidden under paper or foil.

Preparing the door covering

  • Remove all old coating, even primer and putty, until the wood itself remains. For this work, you can use a grinder, a building hairdryer or special compositions for washing.
  • Then you need to sand the surface, remove any defects, sand small residues of paintwork materials, degrease. In this work, you can not do without a grinder, which is better to connect to a vacuum cleaner. If you don't have such a device, you can get by with medium-grained emery paper.

  • When you completely managed to sand the canvas and prime it, you can proceed to the putty of large flaws. If as topcoat you plan to use varnish, it is better to use special composition for wood. If the decorative dye is not transparent, you don't have to worry about the color of the putty. Don't forget about the gaps at the walls and baseboards!
  • After puttingty, after waiting for the time indicated by the manufacturer of the mixture, you need to sand again, masking the scuffs. You can immediately use a medium-grained canvas, and then come to the finish line with a fine-abrasive one.

Please note, if the surface has large dents, and you plan to use an opaque or dark material for the finishing layer of the finish, use an auto-putty. There is no glass fiber in this mixture.

If the doors darkened under the old finishing materials, and you would just like to open them with varnish, preserving the structure and pattern of the wood, problem areas can be lightened. To do this, you can make a simple DIY bleach: mix the bleach with water in a 1: 3 ratio. When the surface is completely processed, wiped with a cloth and dried (so that the paint does not begin to swell), you can start painting the door directly.

How is a regular door painting done?

We told you how to paint an entrance wooden door or an interior door, it's time to talk about how to perform a simple staining in order to avoid smudges and other problems. If you need to update the canvas outside or paint some doors, there is no point in buying a spray gun.

To do this, it will be enough to buy a narrow brush (for hard-to-reach places) and a roller that will fit any canvas ( natural wood, fiberboard, mdf, canadian, etc.). The only drawback of brushes is that they often lose hairs, so before work it needs to be fluffed up so that all unnecessary and poorly fixed falls out so as not to spoil the finish.

For panel doors it is better to use a roller so that the paint spreads evenly. Work begins from the end, moving to the right. You will have to paint the canvas in 3 passes, so each subsequent layer should lie down in opposite movements. If painting is done on any other surface, do not over-use the paint so that smudges do not form.

How to use the stain correctly?

So that the wood species does not absorb excess moisture, and the paint lays down evenly, the prepared canvas needs to be slightly moistened. All horizontal surfaces are stained along the grain and then across. The finishing layer is also applied in the longitudinal direction.

The shoals and parts that have not been dismantled begin to be covered from below so that the drops do not touch the still untouched places. This sequence of actions is followed in the event that an opaque material serves as the finishing layer. When the surface treated with wood stain absorbs moisture, the wood fibers straighten out, which will require sanding the canvas with zero sandpaper and repeating the procedure.

It is also worth noting that after staining (when the dye dries) the wood becomes lighter. Therefore, you need to cover it as many times as necessary to achieve the desired color. If you want to speed up the process, you can use an alcohol-based stain. The surface treated with this composition does not require re-grinding. But, water-soluble materials are considered safer, will not smell bad and are more popular.

How to simulate wood?

Advice! Today, the design of premises in the Provence style is very popular, the brevity of which was previously not known to many. Furniture and doors for rooms made in this style are usually chosen in light pastel colors, imitation of antiquity is in great demand.

Adhering to this style when decorating doors with your own hands, a water emulsion or another bleached matte coloring composition can help. At the same time, many are wondering whether it is possible to paint wooden doors with water-based paint? Of course you can, why such doubts?

For such substances, you can use both a spray gun and rollers or brushes. However, on the Internet you can find many videos and photo instructions on how to paint a wooden door in white color emulsion, read in more detail, such skills for artificial aging will not interfere with you!

And so, in order to imitate the drawing of a tree on any base (including metal), you need:

  • Paint the canvas yellowish, grayish, beige or white and dry.
  • Get some liquid soap and a brush, and lubricate the area you want.
  • Take a dark dye and apply to the surface.
  • Remove liquid soap.

Also, to create a retro door, purchase a special brush that is sold at any hardware store. With a brush, movements are made, as if combing hair, over the entire surface in order to touch the soft fibers of the breed. Then you can pigment the surface in different shades.

Do you want to renovate the interior of your apartment, but do not have the necessary funds? Or have you moved into a new home, and you absolutely do not like the doors left over from the previous owners? You can save a lot if you paint the doors.

What coatings to use

Paints differ in the base used for the manufacture.

Oil

They are convenient for painting, and the coating of them is practical in use: you just need to wash off the dirt from the surface with a damp cloth. One layer is enough. But if you want to get a deep saturated shade, then you can use pine or oak in two layers. In addition, several layers will reliably protect the array from external influences.

Acrylic

Dont Have unpleasant odor, non-flammable. The paint adheres well to the surface of a solid wood door, dries quickly (about 24 hours). If there is high humidity in the room, the drying process may take a little longer. When applying acrylic paint on an old coating, further cracking can be avoided due to the special composition and structure of the paint.

Stains

Stain differs from ordinary paints in that it does not remain a separate layer on the surface of a wooden door - it penetrates into the interior of the wooden leaf. This impregnation is suitable for emphasizing the natural structure of solid pine and other beautiful wood species.

The stain will help to change the shade of the interior door, make it deep and rich. When stained, the color of the canvas will appear uniform. Oil-based or water-based impregnations can be used for coloring immediately after purchase. If you purchased them in powder form, then dilute with methyl alcohol. After applying to the solid pine, it is necessary to cover the door with a layer of varnish.

Varnish

It well protects the massif of pine and other species from external influences. Due to its structure, it makes the wooden door unstable to moisture and scratches. There are many types of varnishes that will help give solid wood doors the new kind... This way you can emphasize the deep, intense color of solid pine with a suitable varnish.

Benefits of stain and varnish

Protective stains differ from classic impregnations. If the door is covered with such a compound, it will "breathe". In this case, the coating is resistant to moisture and cracking. There is a large selection of wood stains on the market. They are suitable for solid wood products:

  • pine trees;
  • oak;
  • spruce and other breeds.

Some of the wood stains are transparent. Such solutions emphasize the beauty of wood and protect it from harmful influences. Use brushes for application. Read the instructions carefully: some manufacturers suggest covering in one layer, while some recommend applying in several layers.

The door, previously painted with paint, should preferably be covered with clear varnish. In this case, it will be less susceptible to external negative influences, retain the gloss and color of the coating. If you have covered the door with acrylic varnish and notice that a whitish tint remains, do not worry - after it dries completely, it will become transparent.

By choosing a special cold cure varnish, you can make your solid pine door finish glossy or matte.

How to start updating the canvas

The process includes the following steps:

  1. Before painting, remove the door from its hinges, remove decorative elements.
  2. Remove the top coat. If you do not remove it, then the effect of subsequent painting will be insignificant, moreover, the varnish or paint will fall unevenly and may peel off over time.
  3. Remember that when sanding with sandpaper, you need to make smooth movements along the grain. Cross-sanding will show the grooves after the final varnishing.
  4. After removing the top layer, mask all cracks and potholes with putty.
  5. Re-process the surface of the solid pine with sandpaper. The presence of roughness and irregularities is unacceptable.
  6. After that, vacuum the door, wipe it with a damp cloth and dry it thoroughly.
  7. It is easier to paint in a horizontal position. So the coating will lie flat, and the work is thus much easier.

Coloring can be done with tools:

  • brushes;
  • rollers;
  • spray guns.

The choice of tool depends on your preferences and skills in working with them. The spray gun is used in work by professionals, besides, it has a high cost. If you need to paint or varnish just one door, then you should think about the advisability of buying it.

Features of applying stain and varnish

Any wood is suitable for staining: pine, oak, birch. It should be applied generously so that the surface is saturated. After the wood has absorbed the stain, the remains must be removed. A brush and acetone are used for washing. It is necessary to carry out this procedure until the composition stops washing off. After that, the door should dry well.

Varnishing is done in two stages. After the first layer has been applied, it is necessary to wait for it to dry and remove roughness and unevenness with sandpaper. After that, it will be necessary to process the varnish again.

Painting veneer

If your interior doors are made of veneer, then the sanding procedure should be carried out with extreme caution. It is unacceptable to use grinding machines - they can break the top layer of the veneer. The work must be done manually, and it is better to entrust this work to professionals.

It is necessary to carefully select the material for the coating:

  1. If the door is brand new, and you simply do not like its color, then you can do without sanding. Just pick the right shade of polish and get to work. If there are small defects, you can simply varnish them, and then rub with polish.
  2. Faux veneer doors are paintable. But there are some difficulties associated with the fact that such a door has a smooth surface, from which paint will roll. You can use a primer, but in this case the effect of the natural wood structure will not be preserved.

In this case, the paint must be applied in two layers. For painting veneer doors, you should choose water-based paints. If the paint structure is dense, the individual coating pattern will be lost.

Before processing a veneer door, carefully consider and evaluate the front of the upcoming work. If there is a small flaw in the form of a scratch, local painting can be dispensed with. If you need to radically change the color, carefully approach the choice of coverage. If you change the surface of the outer layer with chemical dyes, environmental friendliness will be violated.

If you follow the suggested tips and tricks, the updated interior doors made of solid pine or other wood will become your pride and will revive the interior of your apartment.
