The method of wood brushing is very popular. This method is used to decorate wooden floors or ceiling beams (ceilings), as well as to stylize interior items and furniture. It consists in treating the surface with a coarse metal brush, and then varnishing. During mechanical processing, the soft layers of wood are removed, and only hard layers remain on the surface.

Due to this effect, the surface will acquire a relief appearance. After that, the wood must be varnished, and it is better in two layers, which will emphasize the texture of the wood and give it elegance. Remember that not all wood can be used for brushing. Conifers, as well as oak, walnut and ash, are best suited for these purposes.

First stage preparation

If we talk about how to make aged furniture with your own hands, then you need to start with the fact that the first step is to prepare the product for this procedure.

To really age the furniture with your own hands, you should start with preliminary preparation of the product for this procedure.

To do this, you should:

  • remove all handles, as well as other decorative elements from the product to be processed;
  • then empty all the drawers of the chest of drawers or wardrobe, they should also be fully pulled out;
  • remove all paint or varnish that is on the subject;
  • if the surface was stained before applying the varnish, then, of course, the entire layer of paintwork cannot be removed, in which case we remove as much varnish as possible.

In order to really age the furniture with high quality with your own hands, you should start with preliminary preparation of the product for this procedure, for this, of course, you need to empty all the boxes, otherwise in the end it will be clear that these are not antique products, any master class says about this.

It is important to empty all dresser drawers

In addition to all of the above, certain materials should be prepared in advance that are used to carry out the procedure for artificial aging of furniture. It:

  • water-based paint;
  • special devices that are used for direct cleaning of furniture;
  • sandpaper;
  • brushes to be used in the work;
  • craquelure varnish.

There are about 10 main methods of artificial aging of furniture. Each of which is based on a specific technology.

Aging furniture with staining

Restoration of the appearance of wood

We have to face such a necessity everywhere. If the piece of furniture has served for some time, and defects have appeared in a separate area or throughout the entire area, the original decor has been lost, then this can be removed relatively easily, with your own hands. In principle, this technology is one of the varieties of wood aging.

Operating procedure:

  • Removal of the applied layers (wood stripping to the base). The skin is used. The grain size is selected based on the complexity of processing.
  • Bare wood is covered (in 2 layers) with acrylic paint (black).
  • Any furniture has a peculiar configuration. Consequently, all protrusions (corners, bevels, segments around the handles, etc.) will wear out over time. After determining these areas, they are rubbed with paraffin. It's easy to find a candle in the house.
  • Painting the wood in the required color.
  • After the composition dries, the paraffin is washed off (peeled off), and dark paint will appear on the areas treated with it.
  • Finish.

The author recalls that the article outlines only the simplest ways to implement artificial aging of a tree with your own hands. There are a lot of them, as well as the instruments and preparations used. But if the meaning of all technological operations is clear, then it is not difficult to develop your own methodology. The specifics of the work and local conditions themselves will tell you what and how it is most expedient to do.

Recent fashion for vintage products, cars and retro clothing has not spared the design of wooden products. Semi-antique wood processing allows creating an interior in new buildings that looks like the owners inherited the apartment from their great-grandfathers. The hosts country houses decorate facades and internal space with old wood. Decorative false beams on the ceiling, stairs, doors and other design elements are made of artificially aged wood, making the house look like a medieval castle or a fairytale forest hut.

The high cost of artificially aged wooden objects makes home craftsmen want to do the necessary things with their own hands, immediately achieving both a cheaper product and its true uniqueness. The work of aging a tree is not at all as difficult as it might seem from the outside. You just need to know about the main ways to achieve a beautiful textured surface on ordinary lumber, which can be purchased at any company that sells building materials and wood.

Glaze technique

The method of glazing a wooden surface is also widely applicable. This method involves the use of various coloring compositions, ranging from acrylic and oil, and ending with watercolors. The glaze technique is to obtain deep color overflows through layers of different transparency. For artificial aging of wood using this method, it is convenient to use acrylic-based paints, since they are easily diluted or mixed, forming a wide range of colors.

In addition, a solution of an acrylic-based coloring composition dries quickly on the surface and is moisture resistant. The staining process is quite simple: the prepared solution of acrylic paint is applied to the surface, after which it is allowed to dry completely. If necessary, the procedure can be repeated to obtain the desired shade. Glazed layers do not hide the texture of the wood, and the aging effect is achieved due to the overflow of translucent layers of the dye.

Decorating surfaces by the glazing method, among other things, opens up ample opportunities for experimentation, as it allows you to apply translucent layers of the dye composition of various colors, obtaining unique shades.

Thermal and chemical treatment of wood

These methods can be called related, since the destruction of the top layer of the tree occurs almost without mechanical stress. It's over dangerous waysthan the previous ones, so processing should be done in the air and in compliance with safety measures.

The essence of firing lies in the fact that soft fibers are destroyed when exposed to open fire. For this, the surfaces of the workpiece are fired with a blowtorch flame or a special gas burner to a depth of 3 mm. With superficial firing, the aging effect will be negligible, with deeper firing it will be more pronounced. At the same time, the master adjusts the process depending on his taste and needs.

After charring the top layer, a metal brush or a drill bit is put into operation, scraping off carbon deposits until desired color and textures. Such wood can not be dyed, because it will already have dark and light areas. The final processing consists in sanding and varnishing the product.

With the chemical method, antique wood decoration occurs in the process of exposure to alkalis or ammonia. To do this, you can use sprays for cleaning stoves or a drainage agent. Before use, it is necessary to familiarize yourself with the composition of the product, it must contain alkali

Particular attention should be paid to precautions when working with it

Falling on the surface of a tree, these chemical substances Some of the soft fibers are “burned out”, at the same time staining the wood gray. After processing, all surfaces are washed with water and covered with a weak solution of vinegar or citric acid (1 tsp per 200 ml of water), removing alkali residues.

The dried products are subjected to brushing and staining, if necessary.

Wood processing by the listed methods will help the owner himself decorate the interior of the apartment in an antique style, without investing large funds and without spending a lot of time on it. The availability of materials and tools for processing allows to engage in this kind of creativity and a sophisticated master carpenter, and a beginner, and even a woman with imagination and skillful hands.

Furniture made of wood aged over the years is able to create in any interior a certain atmosphere of connection between times, continuity, fabulousness and unique comfort. However, it is not at all necessary to wait half a century for a beautiful wooden table or chest of drawers acquired or created by you to acquire such a unique look - there is a special technology for aging wood for this. And today we will tell you about.

Aging a tree is not a quick and painstaking process. It consists of mechanical processing of wood and subsequent work with paints and varnishes... To begin with, furniture (either wooden board, from which you are going to build something) you need to process it with a metal brush - but do not rush to think that this is aging - you just need to scratch it a little and add texture to its surface. For brushing, rough and massive furniture is most suitable, which, in principle, is capable of conveying the real beauty of natural material, and it is not entirely suitable for it, which is made of wooden lamellas and is somewhat "thin" - after texturing it will look a little sad.

According to many experts, it is this superficial approach to the aging of wood that forms in some people the attitude to furniture treated in this way, as if it were furniture after a fire. In addition, the combination in the interior space of the house of aged wooden products and stone elements, ceramic, or artistic forging is a stylish and win-win option, allowing everyone who will be in this room to touch the time, to feel like in another time period in history.

Under natural conditions, aging of wood occurs under the influence of wind, moisture, sun rays, temperature differences. And how to do something that nature takes more than one decade to do, in a couple of days, how to artificially age a tree?

How to age wood Sanding wood

In production conditions, there are special machines for grinding wood, which provide for both the speed of feeding the wood and the removal of wood dust. However, for an ordinary amateur, such equipment is an expensive thing, and not particularly necessary. Of course, if you intend to professionally age wood, it is better to purchase a brush machine, but the most simple option for grinding will be a grinder, or a drill. It is only desirable that they have the ability to adjust the speed.

In principle, the process of brushing wood is represented by three main stages:

  1. Rough selection made of soft fiber wood;
  2. Grinding;
  3. Polishing.

Each of the stages needs a separate brush. The first stage involves the use of a metal brush, also called brushing. However, when working with it, small scratches can also remain on the annual tree rings themselves, which are not so easy to get rid of during subsequent processing. Therefore, you must adhere to some rules:

1 First of all, the brush should only be driven along wood fibers - otherwise, you can damage the rings themselves and spoil the natural pattern of the tree.
2 The speed at which the wire brush moves and the pressure on it should be approximately the same - otherwise, holes may result.
3 When working, the light source must be marked from the side at an acute angle so that the light beam is directed across the wood fibers - this will allow you to better observe the surface on which you are working.
4 Do not press too hard on the work surface - the motor is overloaded and the risk of premature tool breakage increases.
5 The speed of rotation of the brush should not exceed 3000, the most optimal option is 2-2.5 thousand revolutions, otherwise it can simply fly in different directions.
6 Work must be carried out in goggles, and do not forget about protecting your hands with gloves, because small pieces of metal bristles from the brush sometimes fly off several meters and can injure. You also need to remember about respiratory protection and dust removal - during such work, even eyelashes are covered with wood dust, imagine what will happen to the lungs.
7 If the brush is new, then it must be “run in” - otherwise, the wood blank will be too much “wrinkled”.
8 You only need to work in one direction - only rotation. It is better not to turn on the reverse at all, because it will literally "destroy" the metal brush.
9 Another important point is that the moisture content of the tree should not be higher than 15%. Otherwise, the result will not be a textured surface, but a "furry" one.

By the way, when working with hard wood, for example, oak or, it is necessary to remove dust, because dust particles of these wood species are considered carcinogenic and can lead to lung cancer.

To obtain a better finish and get rid of excess "pile", you will have to use one more brush - a grinding disc made of polymer-abrasive material. If so that it was clear - plastic (nylon) with the most common grain size equal to 120.

The abrasive brush is versatile. It is characterized by a delicate surface finish. Its use completely eliminates the metal brush, especially if you need to handle the product delicately, or if you intend to avoid scratches that remain after metal brushes.

Thermal aging

In fact, this is a complex wood processing.

Stages of work

First
- firing over the entire surface or in a separate area. This is necessary to remove all the "pulp" and a clearer manifestation of the structure, growth rings, knots, cracks.

Second
mechanical restoration... Carbon deposits are removed with a metal brush. In addition, it allows you to achieve the most pronounced relief of the tree.

The third
(optional) - wood staining. Depending on the breed, this can often produce a greater texturing effect. A single coat is sufficient.

Fourth
- applying varnish. If the aged wood looks great, it is better to use a colorless varnish. Its task is to protect the material from the negative effects of the atmosphere. In some cases, additional toning of wood is made with varnish, but this time with color.

  • The author in practice used different sources of open fire and in the process of training came to the conclusion that the best way - gas-burner. If you work with a blowtorch, it is difficult to achieve a uniform flame. As a result, with aging, scorch marks appear on the tree, which are rather difficult to level, and sometimes even impossible.
  • Before proceeding with the surface treatment, you need to "fill your hand". Therefore, at first it is advisable to get at least a minimum of experience by training on waste lumber. There will always be some kind of wood waste on the farm.

How to age a tree Preparing the material

To begin with, before aging a tree, it must first be prepared. First of all, for brushing, it is better to focus on soft wood, or medium hard wood, which has a pronounced woody texture. This can be, for example, spruce, or pine. These species are distinguished by the fact that their soft fibers are often formed in spring and summer, and during this period the annual rings of a tree grow most rapidly, therefore the fibers are more "loose". Woods with a homogeneous and almost unexpressed texture, such as beech and maple, will not be suitable for aging.

Before starting work, the surface of the tree must be carefully prepared. All dirt and possible defects are removed, it can be a trace of grease, sweat, other stains - the fact is that they can appear when applying a tint solution. Any wooden products must be processed disassembled, regardless of their size - this way you will reduce time costs and reach with a brush in all places, thereby ensuring a uniform aging effect.

How to age wood Finishing aged wood

The final stage of the story about how to artificially age a tree is toning. With its help, the shade of wood changes into several tones. Then patination is done - this is the process of emphasizing the unique woody texture with special solutions that penetrate the wood pores that have opened during brushing. And also craquelure, allowing to achieve the effect of cracking, and varnishing.

After the wood has been discarded, it looks like new but has a textured, embossed surface. To give the tree an aged look, it is covered with various compounds, with dark shades giving the most natural aged look to the tree.

It is the correct color play that gives the aged look to the wood. Those parts of the elements that have soft wood (these are depressions, pores, etc.) can be unevenly painted in darker shades, and the hard part (ridges) in lighter shades. True, today the opposite options are gaining more and more popularity - with crests of a dark shade and depressions of a light one.

The easiest way to tint wood is to apply a generous amount of dark wood stain on the surface and immediately wipe the treated area with a wide rubber spatula, or an ordinary rag. The point is that, in theory, the stain absorbs faster on the softer surface, and slower on the ridges. True, in practice it has already been proven by many experts and amateurs that this is not always the case.

Therefore, you can focus on a slightly more complex technique of aging wood with color. To do this, after the stain has completely dried, the combs are processed with fine sandpaper.

But this method requires subsequent processing of wood with varnish, or special colorless impregnations, because the top layer of wood loses its protective coating.

Another option is to use paints in two contrasting shades. First, the surface is completely painted with the first color, then the second is applied. While the second one is drying, it is necessary to run over the wood with a wide rubber spatula to remove excess paint and open the combs of the first layer.

So you learned about how to age a tree with your own hands
... Yes, this process is not so simple and easy, but as a result you will get unique, handmade, decorative elements that conceal a piece of your soul, the beauty of time, but at the same time are highly durable.

Specificity of processing various surfaces

It is better not to grind the edges and corners of the workpieces at all, especially if you do not intend to varnish the finished product after processing - they will constantly cling and even break off.

On seats, countertops and other horizontal surfaces, you should not do too deep relief, because later cleaning will be much more difficult - spilled drinks, small food crumbs and other "trash" will get stuck between the fibers.

In order to prevent the ingress of dust between the fibers and constant clinging of the rag when cleaning the surface, it must be sanded with an abrasive brush and fine sandpaper.

And the last stage of brushing is polishing or fine sanding. It is performed with a sesal or other synthetic brushes. Also fine sandpaper, abrasive sponges, metal wool are suitable for this. Dust from the treated surface must be removed with a wide soft brush and a vacuum cleaner.

Craquelure technique

A significant effect of aging of the surface is given by the creation of cracks in the coating, or the craquelure technique. In this case, a network of cracks is artificially created in the upper layer of the coloring composition, through which the base or base layer of the coloring matter is visible. The craquelure technique is extremely beautiful and can be different types: one-step, two-step, multi-component, etc.

The simplest in execution is a one-step technique for creating artificial cracks in the layer of the coloring composition. For her, you will need two different colors of the dye and, of course, a colorless craquelure varnish. As the first layer, you can choose from bronze, gold or silver shades, which will give the surface a sophisticated look

After applying the first coat, it is important that the surface is completely dry. Then, quite abundantly, a transparent craquelure varnish is applied.

Unlike the first layer of the coloring composition, you should not wait for it to dry completely, after 45 minutes you can safely apply the second layer of color. Best used for the second coat of acrylic paints

Moreover, it is important to dilute them with water and achieve a not too thick consistency. However, you should not dilute the coloring composition with water too much, since the cracks will be much larger.

You can speed up the drying process of the coloring composition somewhat by using a regular or building hair dryer. A day after the surface is completely dry and a network of artificial cracks is formed, it is recommended to fix the coating with shellac or acrylic varnish.

The technique of microcracking is quite interesting, that is, the creation of a network of microcracks on the stylized surface, which form a thin web. In general, this technique is very similar to the one described earlier, although there are some peculiarities. For example, as a base, a transparent primer must be applied to the surface, and after it has completely dried, a colorless craquelure varnish is applied. When dry, a network of small cracks with a size of one millimeter is formed on the surface. If desired, a layer of patina, paste, or oil paints can be applied to the coating for protection.

How to age a tree Brushing a tree

The term brushing comes from english word “Brush”, which means “brush” in Russian. This technique is also called wood tecturing, that is, with the help of a brush, the texture or relief is given to the wood, which is characteristic of old wooden products.

At the initial stage of brushing from solid wood soft fibers must be removed. This can be done by several methods - light aging involves the creation of a barely noticeable roughness on the surface of the wood, or rough (deep) aging, in which irregularities can have a depth of flesh up to 2-3 mm.

Larger details, for example, ceiling beams or wooden pillars, can be completely pre-processed with an ax - you can make notches, cut the edges, and do not be afraid to spoil something - after all, no one except you knows what should be the result. Such processing allows you to give the product a deep microrelief of the surface, the depth of irregularities in which will be up to 2 cm.

Also, when a tree grows old, fate and "traces" that appear over time from the "work" of various bugs are necessary. Before finishing, they can be simulated with a drill or a drill. In addition, you can apply such simple threaded elements as, for example, pigtails - as a result, you will get a Scandinavian-style product.

How to age a tree: highlights

To add age to the tree with your own hands, you need to be able to work with natural materials and stock up on tools. From the tools you need to have:

  • metal brush;
  • electric or manual plane;
  • sandpaper;
  • grinder.

In addition to the listed tools, it is necessary to have dust protection equipment. This can be a respirator or goggles. Since there will be a lot of dust in the process of creating crafts, you should think about ventilation methods. It is advisable to carry out this work outdoors. If this is not possible, then it is recommended to slightly moisten the wood before abrasive processing. But before opening it with varnish, it must be dried. Also, do not forget that it is absolutely impossible to sweep the resulting dust from the surface with your hands in order to prevent the appearance of splinters. You should also not touch the surface with your hands in order to feel its relief. This can be done only after complete dust removal.

This technology is used very often in the interior. It combines well with stone, metal and ceramics. Without it, the Provence interior style is unthinkable. But then a special painting of the boards is required.

Aged wood is used inside the house for steps, benches, as well as for creating a designer lamp or finishing a dresser. It can be used to make furniture such as a table or chairs. It also makes unique boxes. There are many ways to use old wood in the interior, the choice depends on the design style and aesthetic tastes of the owner.

An artificially aged tree should resemble a natural tree as much as possible, which has been exposed to the influence of sunlight, wind, rain and other natural phenomena. Therefore, here it is necessary to use only hand tools and manual processing of the material whenever possible. It is also important to choose the right varnishes and paints for the outer coating. Today there is a huge assortment of such, so it is important to make the right choice depending on the desired result.

In order to achieve the effect of antiquity at home, it is first recommended to practice on a piece of wood. This will allow you to evaluate the result and avoid mistakes. For training, you need to take the species of wood from which the whole structure will be made in the future.

To make a beautiful and durable wood structure with an antique effect, it is important to choose the right type of wood. Coniferous trees not suitable for this idea, as they contain resin, which interferes with the creation of the effect. It is also worth giving up birch, cherry, maple, pear, juniper. It is better to pay attention to ash, larch, oak, wenge, merbau, dussia.

In order to properly make the aging effect of wood, you need to take old boards. They are the easiest to machine and absorb paints and varnishes well. It is advisable that they have knots. This will add even more beauty to the craft. If there are no such boards in the house, then you can ask neighbors or friends. Surely someone has in store for such, but they have not found a use. They can often be borrowed for free. Young wood does not have many fibers, therefore it is difficult to process, it is better to leave it until the required time.

A master class on creating an aged tree can be found on the net without any problems. There are many videos and detailed descriptions process. So don't worry if you have no experience with natural materials at all. In just a few hours of studying the information, you can understand the essence of finishing and choose the simplest and most beautiful way for yourself.

There are many ways to create the aging effect. Among them there are the simplest ones, which take several hours, and also more complicated ones, which take several days to make. Everyone chooses for himself, based on his stock of tools and the expected result. There are ready-made boards with the effect of antiquity on sale, but the very process of creating them at home fascinates and pleases much more.

How to age wood with paint?

Painting is a must in all ways to create aged wood. If no paint is used, then the outer layer is covered with a colorless or colored varnish. This is to protect the outer layer and give it a nice texture. Translucent glaze "Belinka" is a base on which other paint layers can be applied. It covers the surface after machining. Before coating with varnish or white paint, the surface must be brushed with a soft brush to give relief. A colorless varnish is applied to a slightly dried paint. Thus, wood with a slight antiquity effect is obtained. It comes out light in color and without gross damage.

If you like the aged aggressive effect, then you can't do without multi-layer painting. Also here you should expose the boards to all kinds of damage: beat with iron rods, scrape, make holes with an awl. If you want to completely achieve naturalness, then you can make wormholes, but this option suits the most daring and creative.

Wood, painted several times, it acquires a deep color. For priming, Pinotex is often used, it covers the surface unevenly. It also serves to create a thicker color in the lowest layers of the board. After it dries, it is necessary to make minor damage to the surface and proceed with further processing.

Using white paint is welcome in some cases. She will help to create a craft in the spirit of Provence and give beautiful shade... Since it can give a glossy sheen, it is recommended to dilute it with white spirit.

How to age a Provence tree?

To create a Provence style interior, you cannot do without old white boards. They have very different purposes: they are used for shutters, furniture or steps. After the basic primer coating, the surface is covered with white paint. It does not have to be applied evenly. After drying, you need to go through the brush to further achieve the effect of antiquity.

Loft involves the use of gray aged boards that resemble concrete as much as possible. They can be made gray using acrylic paints of the desired shade.

How to age a tree with your own hands in white?

If you want to paint the board gray, you can do without paints. Chemical method aging involves the use of alkaline agents or ammonia. Using this method, you need to take care of your safety: wear a mask and gloves. After treatment with alkali, the future product can be covered with a film to reduce the drying rate. When the craft is dry, traces of alkali should be removed: for this, it must be rinsed with vinegar solution and brushed. The last stage is coating with colorless varnish.

How to age a tree using decoupage technique?

To make cracks on a product using decoupage technique, the surface is processed step by step with special paints. For the first layer, you need to take paint, which will shine through small cracks. Next, you need to apply craquelure varnish on the dried first layer. It should be applied in a thick layer. After waiting for almost complete drying or accelerating it by drying with a hairdryer, it is necessary to apply the top layer with confident strokes. For small cracks, it is recommended to dilute acrylic paints. Craquelure on the craft can be considered ready after the paint has dried (30-40 minutes).

How to quickly age a tree?

The fastest way is heat treatment of wood and subsequent varnishing. A blowtorch or torch will help you achieve the desired effect very quickly. The top layer of burnt must be removed in order to facilitate staining.

How to age wood with patina?

Aging wood with ammonia is a cheap way to get a patina effect. You can also use special paints with gold, bronze or silver particles to ennoble wood. You can also achieve patina with stain. It is used for full or partial patting. The stain will protect the wood from moisture, mildew and mildew. Of the minuses of its use, only one can be distinguished - as a result, only a dark color is obtained.

Aged wood effect

The imitation of wood damaged by the sun and rain is popular for decorating country houses and modern apartments. You cannot do without such wood when creating certain styles in the interior. It is also successfully used for facade decoration.

Antique wooden products with a faded surface, textured notches and openwork grooves left by woodworm beetles are distinguished by special luxury and charm. Understandably, the natural aging process of wood takes many years. However, if you wish, you can also artificially age the tree. There are several techniques that you can use to give your new wood items a bold antique look.

Chemical treatment ideal for artificial aging of hardwood:
  1. To begin with, wooden blanks are thoroughly cleaned of stains and dirt.
  2. To make the natural wood pattern more textured and voluminous, the boards are alternately processed with coarse and fine-grained sandpaper.
  3. Next, the sanded wood is wiped with a rag or sponge soaked in ammonia or another alkaline solution. As a result of such simple processing, the workpieces acquire a noble darkening.
  4. Finishing varnishing with a transparent glaze will give the prepared wooden products a rich iridescent gloss.
To effectively and quickly "age" coniferous wood, heat treatment with an open fire will be required:
  1. Free from stains and dust wooden parts fired with a blowtorch or gas burner until light carbon deposits appear.
  2. The charred wood is then manually brushed with a metal / wire brush and then cleaned with fine emery cloth.
  3. To emphasize the beauty and texture of the wood, the products are covered with a neutral stain. To apply the solution, use a soft, clean sponge, paint over depressions and other hard-to-reach areas with a brush.
  4. The final stage of processing the blanks is the application of decorative antique wax. The paste is rubbed into the wood in a circular motion using a woolen cloth.

Mechanical processing (brushing) is the process of removing soft layers of wood using various brushes mounted on a drill or angle grinder. The brushing procedure consists of three stages:
  • wood preparation and rough sampling of soft fibers;
  • grinding and polishing of workpieces;
  • toning and varnishing of prepared parts.

An important nuance! For mechanical processing, it is recommended to use soft wood with a pronounced patterned texture - pine, spruce, fir, larch, linden, ash or walnut.

At the first stage of brushing, wooden parts are processed by hand: with a wide chisel or an acute angle of an ax, the edges of the boards are carefully cut and chaotic notches and dents of various depths (up to 1.5 cm) are applied. Further, an electric tool and brush nozzles are put into operation - it is they that allow you to remove soft wood fiber without damaging the growth rings. A polymer brush set on a drill or grinder will help to achieve delicate aging, a metal brushed brush is chosen for a more "brutal" effect. When using brush heads, it is important to adhere to certain rules:
  • Before starting work, be sure to put on protective equipment: a high-quality respirator, plastic goggles and heavy gloves will protect you from wood dust and flying particles of metal bristles.
  • It is desirable to organize workplace so that the rays of light are directed perpendicular to the wood fibers.
  • In the process, avoid strong pressure on the work surface, the pressure on the tool should be moderate.
  • Before direct brushing, new brush attachments must be “rolled in”, otherwise the wooden blanks will be covered with fine, fleecy “terry”.
  • The movement of the brush should be directed along the hard wood fibers; cross-cutting can spoil the natural beauty of the growth rings.
At the second stage of brushing, ribbed wooden blanks are processed using an abrasive brush and fine-grained sandpaper. During the sanding process, it is important to remove any protruding fibers and burrs. To polish the textured boards, use a sisal brush, metal wool or an abrasive sponge. Dust from the workpieces is carefully cleaned off with a flat brush and a vacuum cleaner.

On a note! For more naturalness, the product can be decorated with "wormholes". To do this, using a blunt core or awl, shallow holes are scattered in the wood.

At the third stage of brushing, wood is tinted. To give the blanks a natural aged look, they are painted with stain or acrylic paint in dark shades. First, the selected paint and varnish is abundantly applied to the wooden surface, then immediately remove its excess with a rag or rubber spatula. Thanks to this toning technique, the potholes and depressions acquire a rich dark shade, while the protrusions, the so-called "ridges", remain lighter. After complete drying, the products are covered with transparent protective impregnation or acrylic varnish.

To simulate the aging of wood, you have to be very patient. Such work does not tolerate fuss and rush. However, the result is worth it - the artificially aged tree looks incredibly beautiful, impressive and soundly.

Modern design developments for interior decoration or the creation of furniture designs from natural wood have established themselves recently with very original proposals. One of the fashion trends is the use of wood with an aging effect, which is achieved by artificial methods.

What is brushing?

The word "brushing" is translated from of English languagelike a "brush". Do-it-yourself wood brushing is performed with a stiff brush, which removes some of the fibers from the surface of the workpiece, and the created relief is emphasized by coatings. The process involves the creation of a surface that exhibits rings and a pronounced structure.

How does a tree age?

Today, ordinary furniture can be given an original style by exposing wood artificial aging special methods. Interiors made from such details will also look expensive. Natural conditions help the tree to age, but it takes quite a long time. At home, reducing the time, you can get the final result by subjecting the wood to mechanical processing and coating special formulations... In this article, the home craftsman will receive not only advice, but also an answer to the question of how to age a tree with your own hands using special methods.

A few tips:

  1. A good effect can be achieved if used for work old boards. The absence of such simple material at home or on the site does not mean that it is not nearby. Most often, neighbors are ready to give away unnecessary boards for free.
  2. It should be remembered that the purchase of old boards makes the process of work easier, it is not difficult to age them.
  3. Wood different breeds ages differently regardless of the use of the same coating materials. Fastening products with different effect aging must be foreseen in the finished wooden structure.
  4. A ready-made aged board today can be easily purchased in a store or on the market, sometimes there is no need to do the work.

Necessary materials

Wood aging works are performed using:

  • brushes with metal bristles;
  • circular brush;
  • sandpaper;
  • sawdust brushes;
  • several brushes;
  • white spirit (solvent);
  • dark "Pinotex";
  • transparent and white azure "Belinka";
  • large sponge.

Wood processing can be done in five ways.

Wood aging workshops

1. Aging by removing fibers from the surface with subsequent painting.

Do it yourself wood aging metal bristle brush... It removes some of the fibers, due to which a unique pattern is created, which will be further emphasized by painting.

First a tree is needed sand, then process with a circular brush in an automated way. You can use a metal bristle brush and apply it by hand. In any case, the lines are drawn along the grain.

When the sawdust is removed, a completely new appearance of the board is revealed, which must be emphasized with paint for aging wood.

Then the cleaned product is processed twice with a brush or roller, a translucent glaze is applied to it " Belinka».

After a short time, a small layer of coating must be removed with a sponge to reveal relief... If this aging effect satisfies the master, he can apply a clear varnish on top.

Otherwise, the effect can be enhanced by applying another thin layer. azurewhich is also removed with a sponge to create the bleached canvas popular in this style. On dried wood, varnish or clear paint is applied in one layer.

Various elements wooden structures, made according to this technology of wood aging, are perfectly combined in the old style.

2. Creation of an aging effect with a brush.

With the help of a brush, wood is manually processed, which is covered with a white opaque glaze in one layer. When the coating is dry, the product is processed again.

The surface becomes the aging effect white with a relief pattern.

3. Creation of an antique pattern on the wood, which is covered with several layers of paint.

With this do-it-yourself tree aging, it can be given ancient specieswhen the thing looks like a shabby from time to time. To begin with, the material undergoes minor damage when it can:

  • beat with a hammer;
  • pierce in some places;
  • scratch with a cutting tool;
  • damage with a screw head or an iron bar;
  • and other.

All possible manipulations are performed over the tree, which can emphasize the ancient relief. After a layer is applied to the surface Pinotexwhich has a thick consistency. Due to its density, it will be unevenly laid.

After the thick layer has dried, the surface must be refined with a fine brush or sandpaper. Damage should be kept small so that the influence of time appears to be minimal. Now the product is covered with white glaze " Belinka"With a liquid consistency. The coating must be applied in a thin layer, not necessarily evenly.

When the top layer is dry, it must be scraped off, for which a brush is used, which performs longitudinal movements. The resulting relief emphasizes the effect of antiquity, but the color is still far from the real color that the aged tree has.

Now, to make the thing more natural, its shade needs to be slightly muted. Azure is mixed with white spirit in a ratio of 1: 1.

The product treated with the mixture has a calm surface in a warm tone, from under which the dark surface of Pinotex is visible. In this way, it is good to create aged wood furniture with your own hands.

4. Processing by fire.

A gas burner is used. There are three ways to achieve the result:

  • Wood processing is not required, its structure is emphasized by firing. Then the material is processed with fine sandpaper, sawdust is removed, and varnish is applied.

  • Mechanical processing is carried out and the material is fired. As a result, the surface looks three-dimensional, and the wood looks rich.

  • Do-it-yourself wood aging is achieved by intensive firing, when some of the fibers are removed. Then the product is mechanically processed with a brush having a hard metal bristle.

5. Creation of a voluminous product with gross damage, varnished.

The wood brushing workshop shows you what needs to be done step by step in order to properly age the wood:

  1. First you need to make the right choice. wood... It cannot be young or resinous. It is better to use a material with a clear structure.
  2. For processing the workpiece, manual plane, and not electric, which is not able to emphasize the natural effect.
  3. On the board by hand using chisels serifs are made that do not have the correct shape. The notches must be made on the edges so that it looks like the product was chopped with an ax.
  4. In automatic mode using drill and hard fibers of the attachment, soft fibers are removed from the wood. Movements during work should be light. If you use a regular brush, the treatment will be rougher.
  5. Stupid nail allows you to add wormholes to the decor. It can be used to make shallow holes.
  6. The surface is cleaned with a brush from debris, it is applied to Pinotex Ultra... This paint varnish is resistant to environmental influences.
  7. After drying, the surface is processed fine sandpaper, the treatment of which will accentuate dark cavities and light protrusions, giving the product volume. The pronounced wood structure now looks very nice.
  8. Finally, the tree is covered again varnish.

Photo of brushed wood

Examples of photographs depicting the processed material allow you to see the wide decorative possibilities of wood aged by artificial methods. Products from various species of elderly wood, opened with varnish, paint, wax, oil after brushing, can acquire all sorts of shades and get a new life.

Choosing a suitable room design, it has become fashionable to give wood products an antique effect. There are several technologies that will visually add age and make the decor details unique and handmade.

They are easy to use, so you can do it yourself, saving money from the family budget.

What is this type of processing for?

The whole the world man is filled with electronic assistants, artificial materials. Under these conditions, it is not surprising that among city dwellers it has become popular to use wood in interior design in order to get even a little closer to nature.

By processing semi-antique boards or timber, the owner gets an exclusive product, because each tree has its own unique relief.

In addition, the aging technology significantly increases the strength of raw materials, in contrast to the natural impact of the environment and time.

And thanks to the coating of wood with protective solutions and varnishes, its service life is extended, in addition, paint or varnish prevents the entry of insects, prevents the process of wood decay.

This kind decorative finishing used for ceiling beams, flooring, furniture.

However, it is important to understand that not all lumber is suitable for this type of work. The aging technique cannot be used for the following types of wood:

  • cherry, pear (other fruit types);
  • maple;
  • alder.

Therefore, for processing semi-antique wood, it is better to purchase solid wood, perfect for:

  • nut;
  • ash;
  • larch;
  • pine.

And having completed a high-quality toning of the product, you can get an imitation of an expensive wood species, taking as a basis a pine or ash tree that is budget-priced.

Important! Older trees require more careful processing, since they have many layers with different densities. Therefore, in order to accurately determine the age of the raw material, you need to pay attention to the number of rings in the cut: the more there are, the older the tree.

What aging methods should you pay attention to?

There are three ways to create antiques from furniture, these include:

But also the patina of wood is also distinguished, when special paints, wax or stains are applied to the raw materials in several layers, which, being absorbed, visually give the surface of the product age.

For masters who will practice such an imitation for the first time with their own hands, it is recommended to practice a little on pieces of boards or timber in order to clearly understand all the nuances of the process.
It should be noted right away that if it is necessary to process the finished product, then it will be correct to initially disassemble it so that the entire surface has a uniform coating.

And to create an author's masterpiece, you should pay attention to wood slightly damaged by insects, the external environment, where there are knots, chips, because in the end such a product will look luxurious. Therefore, it will perfectly complement the kitchen, veranda, living room in the style of "Country", "Provence".

Thematic material:

Mechanical method

This type of aging is called wood brushing, since brush in translation from English is a brush. It is this building element that performs the bulk of the work.

With the help of brushes, soft layers are removed from the surface of the tree, and the material acquires a relief. However, the desired effect will be obtained only when the cleaned raw materials are treated with paint or varnish, emphasizing and giving contrast to the pattern.

Important! For brushing, it is necessary to choose a tree with a pronounced fibrous structure, otherwise the whole processing process may come to naught.

To carry out this method of aging, you need to have the following tools on hand:

  • bulgarian;
  • electric drill;
  • hard and soft metal brushes;
  • sandpaper;
  • paint brushes;
  • stain;
  • acrylic paint;

And in order not to harm health, all operations must be performed in an open space, adhering to safety rules.

Important stages of brushing

Mechanical aging simulation consists of 3 basic steps. Among them:

  1. Rough. A metal brush nozzle in the shape of a circle is installed on the grinder. The surface is processed along the grain, while the hand pressure should not change, so as not to damage the relief of the material.
  2. Finishing or grinding... The electric drill is equipped with a brass brush, a grinder with a less rigid metal brush is also suitable, while the rotation of the tool must be reduced. The entire surface is processed, as a result of which various burrs, roughness must be eliminated. And in order for the wood to become pleasant to the touch, it is better to walk a couple of times on top with sandpaper.
  3. Painting and polishing... The final step, thanks to which the product takes on the expected antique look. A layer of stain is applied to the material, then it is carefully washed off with a rag, due to which only the soft parts of the raw material acquire color. If desired, you can add paint in bright colors. After drying, the wood is polished and varnished.

An option for aging products can be the use of craquelure varnish. After applying this varnish, cracks appear on the surface, into which paint can be rubbed and the raw material acquires a contrasting pattern.

Wood burning

Exposure to the high temperature of the fire on the untreated material allows for an antiqued effect in a short time

It is better to take a gas burner as a tool, since the blowtorch will smoke heavily, which can spoil the surface to be treated.

Operating procedure:

  1. The material is burned by the burner to a depth of 3 mm evenly over the entire area. In this case, you should carefully watch so that the tree does not catch fire.
  2. The charred layer of raw materials is removed with a metal brush.
  3. The surface is sanded with sandpaper.
  4. Painting in this case is not necessary; you can simply apply a transparent varnish to the product.

But you need to understand that firing indoors is prohibited and life threatening.

Chemical method

If you decide to use this method of processing, you need to immediately stock up on rubber gloves and a protective face mask, so that toxic fumes from solutions do not cause poisoning.

Alkalis such as stove cleaners are suitable as a base material. The tree is covered with a solution in several layers and left so for about 12 hours, no longer, depending on the substance and type of wood. Then it is thoroughly washed with a vinegar solution. Its concentration is no more than 1 tsp. for 200 ml of water. When the surface is dry, it needs to be sanded. Acrylic paint is applied to the processed material or varnished.

How much does wood aging cost?

The average price for brushing is from 350 to 1 thousand rubles per 1 m 2. The cost of services depends on the region, breed and size of the material. For example, processing 1 m2 of unpainted hardwood boards will cost 50-100 rubles more than the same sawn timber from pine or spruce.

If the client wants to immediately order the painting of raw materials, then the cost of the work can be safely multiplied by 2. The consumer can find a photo of the services offered on any website of the company of interest.

Of course, the prices for such imitation of antiquity are high. Therefore, you can stock up on the necessary set of tools, patience and make an antique masterpiece from wood at home, the quality of which will not be inferior to factory counterparts.
