Wooden floors

  • another layer of insulation is laid over the poured screed. For this, special bars are mounted in the gaps, between which the selected insulation material is laid. Next, a vapor barrier layer is laid, and from above it is closed with plywood or board flooring;
  • the most the best option, of course, there will be installation of any of the known floor heating systems.

From a decorative point of view, a plywood and board coating does not look elite, and parquet or laminate laid on top of technical wood will look better in the photo and upon visual inspection.

Dry floor screed

Today in construction industry dry floor screed is gaining popularity. To create such a base, it is necessary to purchase a free-flowing composition for creating a dry screed. It may include fine-grained expanded clay, expanded perlite sand, etc.

Once the dry backfill layer is leveled, it can be covered with a technical layer of material, which will be the base for the cladding. Most often used for these purposes: chipboard, OSB, moisture-resistant plywood and other materials.


This design has excellent sound and heat insulation characteristics. It is very easy to install, and the structure allows the joint installation of various engineering communications... It is possible to improve the thermal characteristics of a room with such a screed by mounting any type of underfloor heating system.

The floor insulation itself is carried out according to a certain technology, based on what material was used to create the base for laying all the other layers.

Thermal insulation of wooden floors

This part will deal with how to insulate the floor in the old wooden house or at the stage of construction of a new building. You can start work with soil insulation (read also: ""). It is best to use a layer of expanded clay for this purpose. The embankment of material should be 0.2-0.4 meters thick, while it is leveled for high-quality laying of subsequent layers. The advantage of such a layer is that it blocks the penetration of cold into the premises, stopping it at the very base. However, this layer is not enough for high-quality thermal insulation of floors.


In this case, the insulation procedure is as follows:

  • the subfloor is in perfect condition. For this, any defects are removed: cracks and holes are sealed with clay soaked in water to a creamy state. Clay can replace the putties familiar to builders. This natural material interacts well with wood and acts as a "excellent" sealant for board flooring;
  • as soon as the applied clay mixture dries up, you can start laying insulation in the voids between the support logs. In this case, you can use: expanded clay, foam, mineral or ecowool, or polymer liquid insulation, presented in the form polyurethane foam;
  • on top of the insulation, a vapor barrier layer of the film is laid, fixed on the logs and transverse fasteners between them;
  • finally, you can start laying the boarding and installing the skirting boards.

Next, a layer of insulation is placed on the resulting structure and covered with a vapor barrier material. Plywood is used as a flooring, which, upon completion of installation, can be primed and varnished. Insulation of a concrete base

As mentioned above, concrete is a priori a cold material, which means that its warming should not even be discussed.


You can implement the laying of the material as follows:

  • first rough concrete base covered with a waterproofing film, over which a 10-15 cm layer of expanded clay is poured. It is best to pour and level this insulation according to the pre-installed beacons (more: "");
  • the prepared base is poured cement mortar liquid consistency to create a film on the expanded clay layer that protects against moisture loss from the main mortar to be poured under the screed;

  • the selected coating is laid on the hardened screed.

Insulation of floors on a dry screed

A dry screed can act both as the main base for laying the floor covering, and as a heat-insulating layer over the existing concrete floor. Electric underfloor heating

The electric underfloor heating system itself is produced ready-made for installation. It is enough just to unfold it and lay it on a flat surface. A grid with a heating element is fixed on an adhesive mixture, which is usually used when installing tiles.


According to the standard, a sheet of electric underfloor heating has a length of up to 25 meters and a width ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 meters. Accordingly, before buying such a heating system, it is necessary to measure the room and determine the number of sheets required for high-quality heating (in more detail: ""). The advantage of this underfloor heating option is that it can be installed over a dry screed.

It is more difficult to use the option with a power cable as a heating element, since it is necessary to prepare a certain base for it with fasteners of appropriate dimensions. This method is more suitable for a cement-sand screed, in which it is easier to create appropriate fasteners.


Upon the installation of an electric underfloor heating, a thermostat is mounted in the room at a height of 0.5-0.7 meters from the floor, with which the owner will be able to control the used power of the system and adjust the heating level. This controller is connected with the laid cable, and the sleeve, which contains the floor part of the cable, must be under the tie.

The screed is poured over the installed and proven heating system. Its thickness should be at least 5 centimeters. It is possible to put the warm floor into operation no earlier than 1 month after the screed is filled, since this is the optimal period for the cement-sand mortar to harden.

Water heated floor

An underfloor heating system consists of a heating circuit that is properly installed on a selected base. For its assembly, pipes made of metal-plastic or polyethylene are used, laid on special mats or reinforcing mesh.


The step between parallel sections of the pipeline should be between 30 and 35 centimeters. How to insulate a floor in a wooden building?

At the stage of building a house, the process of floor insulation begins. First of all, the place under the floor is covered with sand 5-6 cm, then expanded clay is poured onto it.

When choosing a heater, you need to take into account many points, for example, if you opt for natural materials, then it is worth remembering that they are subject to combustion, while they rarely resist moisture, and various microorganisms and rodents can start in them.

If the floor in the house is wooden, then a dry screed on the floor is well suited as insulation. To equip such insulation, you need to fill in expanded clay along the guides set at the level. Then a gypsum fiber insulation plate is laid on the expanded clay. This method is simple, but not applicable in high humidity.

Not so long ago, a practical, durable and fireproof material appeared on the market - foam glass. The thickness of this material reaches 12 cm. These slabs can be laid not only on a wooden floor, but also on a concrete one.

How to insulate a concrete floor

The concrete floor can be insulated with the following materials:

  • expanded polystyrene;
  • styrofoam;
  • ecowool;

If the floor in the apartment requires insulation, then it is better to use Isolon, followed by the arrangement of a warm, infrared, electric floor. This option will not reduce the height, and will make living in the apartment more comfortable, due to the fact that the floor temperature can be regulated.

The most effective option for high ceilings is the arrangement of a water heated floor. The height of the cover in this case will be 10-12 cm.

To save space, you can use a screed with an insulating effect. This is enough new material, but has already established itself as high quality and reliable. In this case, the insulation layer will be only 3 cm.

You can use the simplest and most common method - double decking. Planks 2.5 cm thick are fixed directly on the concrete base with tongue-and-groove piles. After that, a substrate and a laminate or linoleum with an insulating layer are laid on the wooden base.

The gap between the insulation and the vapor barrier layer should be at least 4-5 cm. This value ensures proper ventilation of the space. If there is a lack of height, counterrails are packed on the logs.

If the building is located in an area where high groundwater is present, then instead of a vapor barrier layer, you need to lay a waterproofing layer that will prevent the insulation from getting wet. In addition, some types of insulation do not need a vapor barrier.

The installation outside the house of special air ducts installed in 4-5 m increments and an exhaust pipe will also help get rid of high humidity. The presence of these elements promotes good air circulation and increases the efficiency of floor insulation.

It is possible to insulate a wooden floor without dismantling the old coating using linoleum on a jute or felt basis, but it is better to use it not as independent view insulation, but as an addition to warm floor... This durable and easy-to-install coating performs the function of waterproofing.

Another method of insulation without dismantling is liquid foam, which is driven under the floor through the holes with a special device. But, using this method, it is worth remembering that the filling of the space is uneven, and therefore this option is not perfect.

How to choose the right insulation
