For many years, wood trim has been considered a real classic, which is not subject to newfangled trends. Modern market offers a huge selection of high-quality floor curbs, that's just natural wood appreciated above all else. In this article we will talk about the pros and cons of this material, we will try to figure out how to make a skirting board yourself and install it.

Features of a modern skirting board

When choosing such products, you should first of all remember that high-quality wood has never been cheap. Such curbs belong to the middle or upper price range. Even if you understand how to make a wooden plinth with your own hands, then you must initially take care of the right choice material. Naturally, wood is much more expensive than plastic. Now let's look at what skirting boards are, and get acquainted with their advantages and disadvantages.

Varieties of skirting boards

Today in the store you can find only two options for products made from natural wood:

  • Solid skirting boards solid wood... Their cost in to a greater extent depends on the type of wood, in addition, the complexity of the profile, the level of processing and the grade play an important role in determining the price. As a rule, such curbs are classified as elite goods and products of an average price niche.
  • Veneer skirting boards. They are made from a natural array of less expensive conifers, in particular, spruce or pine. There are also models made of laminated veneer lumber. After the front profile has already been formed, the expensive wood veneer is industrially glued to the strip. As a result, a product is obtained that is identical to an expensive natural elite array, but it costs much less than the original.

Important! Pressed MDF planks covered with natural veneer are also classified as wood products.

Skirting shapes

Long gone are the days when the manufacture of such a product was limited only to models with triangular cuts. They differed only in the absence or presence of a chamfer. Fortunately, the current woodworking market regularly improves equipment and technologies.

By form, they are divided into the following models:

  • Traditional forms. Modern wooden planks are in no way inferior to gypsum stucco or polyurethane products in terms of the complexity of the ornament.

Important! High-tech programmable machines allow you to apply patterns that are as similar as possible to those created by hand carving.

  • Travel forms. All manufacturers are trying to somehow stand out from the crowd with their unique models. Therefore, there are also classic standard products on sale, the main bar in which has a size from 10 to 25 mm, and models with a non-standard height from 40 to 300 mm.

Important! By choosing optimal size skirting boards, try to push off from the ceiling height:

  • In urban apartments, the ceiling has a standard height of 2.7 m, so the height of the plank in such cases should not exceed 7 cm.
  • For higher ceilings, it is better to buy curbs of at least 5 cm.

What material is the baseboard made of?

Previously, people chose a plinth based solely on what material it was made of. But modern designers successfully combine various tree species, so they easily bypass the already established rules. Before making a skirting board, check out its varieties depending on the material:

  • Pine. This type of conifers is considered the most popular because it is quite easy to work with. The solid itself is very soft, it is easy to cut and process. The variety of colors and textures allows you to use a wide variety of tinting compositions to achieve an original design solution.
  • Larch. Curbs from this material occupy a separate niche in the modern market. It is not cheap, but it is absolutely not afraid of moisture, due to which it does not rot. Larch curbs are ideal for showers or kitchens.
  • Oak. It belongs to the elite massif, as it is distinguished by its unique durability and strength. But this material is appreciated more for its aesthetic qualities.

Important! Models made of bleached, stained or artificially aged oak are usually used to add solidity to the interior.

  • Beech. It also belongs to the varieties of elite wood, because in its characteristics it is in no way inferior to the aforementioned oak. In its pure form, it has an original pink tint, perfectly smooth texture.
  • Nut. Such borders are distinguished by a noble brown shade. Walnut planks are elastic, mainly used for the manufacture of bent profiles.

Important! Due to the high iodine content, the nut also has certain health benefits.

  • Ash. This material has a charming light olive shade. Like a nut, it bends well, it looks a bit like oak in texture, but the fibers are more clearly traced in it.
  • Alder. It lends itself to processing, but it is difficult to bend. Such planks are afraid of water, even temporary dampness can lead to deterioration and rotting of the curb.
  • Exotic mahogany and wenge. Basically, they are preferred because of the original texture and color. The array itself is very light and durable, but in terms of finance, not everyone can afford it.
  • Linden and aspen. The materials are flexible, resistant to moisture, and work well. They are relatively inexpensive, therefore, in particular, baths are trimmed with them.
  • Cherry. Such curbs are in deserved demand. They are not as strong as oak, but they are more resistant to decay and elastic. If you choose such a thin skirting board, then keep in mind that over time it will change its color.

Important! When buying a clean, un-varnished border, remember that after you varnish it, it will change its shade a lot. If you want to know how it will turn out as a result of varnishing, then wipe the bar with a wet sponge.

The nuances of self-assembly of skirting boards

Despite the fact that wooden products are much tougher compared to their plastic counterparts, even a beginner will figure out how to make a plinth from wood with his own hands. Guide self installation does not cause any difficulties, especially if you have worked with a drill and screwdriver at least once.

Material selection and preparation for installation

Many people wonder whether it is possible to make wooden borders on their own, but the main thing in this matter is not to forget that their production is not always economically profitable.

Important! All financial and labor costs will pay off only if you choose the right board.

Remember:

  • The moisture content of the material should not be lower than 16%. Raw wood does not lend itself to grinding, moreover, it will not work to process it on a milling machine.
  • Rot, various chips, knots, and other defects are undesirable here.
  • The ideal option is a dry, clean, planed board.

Important! The main type of processing at this stage of material preparation is milling. For this you need milling machine or a high-quality manual router with stops and clamps.

Installation of a wooden plinth

Installation instructions for natural wood products are as follows:

  • Use a tape measure to determine how many planks you need, then add 20% to that figure. This tolerance is required for trimming and joining.
  • Start the arrangement with a door lute or near corner. Move clockwise.

Important! Remember that wood is not plastic, there are no adapters and plugs, so in this situation, competent joining in a straight line of planks and trimming corners is especially important.

  • If the corners are perfectly flat in the room, use a miter box to cut the planks at a 45-degree angle and join them. Since this situation is rare, it is better to use a flat plinth for marking, apply it alternately to both sides of each corner, then draw along the upper and lower edge of the line strip. Cut angle line - the intersection of these lines.
  • Install with self-tapping screws. To secure the planks with them, simply make through holes in them. Or fix them on the wall with clips, then install the plinth on top.

From this article, you learned how to make a wooden plinth with your own hands, so do not hesitate, choose quality material and get to work. Natural wooden borders are known to be preferred by people with refined, well-developed taste. But, nevertheless, it is not difficult to mount them, as you can see by reading this material.

Hello to all homemade lovers!

This summer we had to do quite a lot of renovations.

And it all started with the fact that we wanted to replace the old wooden windows on plastic. However, since our house is wooden and rather old, during the dismantling of the previous windows it turned out that some of the wall logs (especially the logs located under the window sills) were quite rotten. As a result, in addition to installing new windows, almost half of the wall had to be replaced.

Naturally, at the same time, the repair was significantly delayed (even now it has not yet been completed to the end), and, in addition, much more money had to be spent than had been planned for the repair in advance.

In this regard, at the last stages of the repair, it was necessary to save a lot, mainly, of course, on what could not be bought, but done by hand.

As a result, when it came to the plinth, they also decided not to buy a ready-made one, but to make it ourselves from ordinary spruce and pine boards.

Moreover, we did not have any special requirements for the beauty of the skirting board, since the floor in our house is also quite old and perhaps in a few years it will still need to be changed.

Since the plinth had to be made of boards, it turned out to be somewhat narrow, although, in general, this width was quite enough. In terms of height, I decided to make it bigger, 50-60 centimeters in order to make it easier to attach to the walls.

In order for the plinth to adhere well to the floor (on which there are irregularities in some places), I made the lower edge of the plinth beveled back at an angle of 10 degrees. So it will fit snugly against the wall (this will be the base surface) and at the same time against the floor, the irregularities of which will not be scary.

Below is a drawing of this skirting board with dimensions.

In order to make this skirting board, it took me about two and a little hours in the evening, as well as the following accessories.

Materials:

Boards 2.5 cm thick, 12 cm wide, and 200 cm long.

Tools:

Circular saw for wood;

Electric planer;

Manual frezer;

Belt sander;

Saw blade guide;

Shaped cutter for wood for a hand router and wrench to install it;

Protective glasses.

First, we install a guide fence on the circular saw and set the width of the sawn-off workpieces for the skirting board on it. I set the width to 58mm, taking into account a roughly 3mm allowance for the cut.

Then we tilt the saw blade to 10 degrees.

Now we make sawing.

Our workpieces have already been cut.

Now we process the upper front edges of the blanks hand milling cutter with a curly cutter installed on it.

This operation must be carried out with protective goggles, since when the router is working, chips fly in all directions, as well as small pieces of wood that can easily get into the eyes.

After that, we carry out the final - finishing processing of the blanks with a grinding machine.

Wooden skirting boards are a traditional attribute of interior decoration and continue to be in fashion due to their environmental friendliness, spectacular appearance and durability. The slatted decor can be made of solid wood or in combination with decorative veneer.

Skirting boards in modern interior are used not only for decorating floors and ceilings with walls, but also for masking wires and even pipes with a small diameter.

Features of skirting boards made of wood

The cost of the skirting board is determined by the type of wood, but in any case, wooden decor will cost more than plastic counterparts. It should be taken into account that in this case the price-quality ratio is quite fair. The durability and durability of wood products, the possibility of cosmetic renewal and the status appearance justify this choice.

An eclectic approach allows you to use wooden skirting boards not only with parquet or board cladding, but also a wide range of flooring.

Possibility effective heat and noise insulation, a variety of configurations and the simplest methods for joints and corners allow you to apply any design solution.

Fixing skirting boards made of wood

When calculating the price of a wooden plinth, it is necessary to take into account the labor costs of installing them, which requires carpentry skills. Perfectly flat walls create best conditions for installation. The higher the quality renovation works, the more aesthetically pleasing styling can be. Instead of self-tapping screws, you can use wooden pins or liquid nails.

Solid wood skirting boards are the most workable material: they can not only be painted, but also carved. By changing the standard configuration, you can mask defects and implement non-standard ideas.

Clip-on skirting boards

A special technology using metal holders allows you to attach both wooden and veneered skirting boards without damaging the decorative surface.

An important advantage of this method is easy dismantling without damaging the walls and decor, it gives the most convenient access to the communication lines hidden under the skirting boards. The clips are attached in 30-50 cm increments, then once the plinth is installed on the fasteners by pressing.

Fashionable configurations of wooden skirting boards

Special wiring ducts are not the only innovation in modern wood skirting boards. The fashion for wide edging around the entire perimeter of the floor conceptually changes the configuration of the wooden skirting board.

The traditional boot widening at the bottom is inferior in popularity to tall and narrow baguettes, the surface of which is perpendicular to the floor.

Flat and narrow minimalist skirting boards of the European type in models with a height of up to 10 cm are usually used more often in white, with a higher height, milling decoration is done in classic style.

Using non-standard large sizes wooden skirting boards are only possible in spacious rooms with high ceilings.

The most neutral option is low moldings made of solid wood with a height-to-width ratio of 2: 1. Such dimensions favorably emphasize the natural texture of the tree.

Selection of wooden skirting boards

Untreated baguettes from the same wood species as flooring can be tinted and varnished for a uniform effect or to create contrast. You can also purchase veneered skirting boards, matching them to a tone darker than the floor.

Landmark color scheme when choosing a floor molding, there can also be platbands doorways... Skirting boards can be matched in black and white contrast, or exactly in the color of doors and windows.

IN modern design skirting boards are also used to match the color of the walls or furniture.

Ceiling plinth, or fillet made of wood

A stylish addition to an interior decorated in a classic style can be matched to floor decor ceiling skirting boards made of wood, but it is necessary to take into account the greater laboriousness of installation and the need for more careful alignment of the walls and ceiling.

The standard width of wooden slats is from 1 to 3 cm, they are fixed with screws or self-tapping screws.

Preservation of the wood decor, installed in hard-to-reach places, especially in rooms with high humidity can be provided only if treated with special paints and varnishes.

If a few decades ago, skirting boards were made of wood and fastened to the floor, now there is much more choice. For example, you can purchase plastic ones, which are quite simple to mount on the floor with your own hands.

They are chosen depending on the color of the floor, and also take into account the presence of a cable channel.

Calculation of the required material

Before going to the hardware store, calculate the required amount of materials. This can be done as follows:

  1. Using a tape measure, measure the floor around the perimeter - excluding the width of the openings.
  2. We calculate the number of planks: the number obtained as a result of the previous steps must be divided by the estimated length of the plinth. The number must be rounded to the nearest whole number. For example, if the calculation results in 7, 5, then we buy 8 slats.
  3. In addition, the calculation includes external and internal corners, connectors, plugs, right and left.

How to mount?

You will need in work:

  • nails, screws;
  • drill;
  • screwdriver;
  • glue for plastic.

For installation on the floor of skirting boards with cable channels, you will need nails or self-tapping screws:

  1. First, the strip of the cable channel is removed from the plinth - holes must be drilled in it. They are drilled in 50 cm increments, and about 10 cm retreat from the corner, the diameter of the drill used in this case will be 6 mm.
  2. Attached to the plinth inner cornerok and glued with glue to fix as securely as possible. A plinth is applied from the corner, after which points are marked on the wall, in which shallow holes are then made with a drill.
  3. Plastic dowels are inserted into the holes. Along the entire length of the plinth, fasten with screws (the latter can be replaced with dowel-nails).
  4. The end of the skirting board is closed with a joint.
  5. Measure the length before joining, then cut the bar. Follow the above scheme for further installation. Don't forget about the markup.
  6. A cable is laid in the channel and covered with a lid.

You can proceed to the final stages, which include the installation of lighting equipment and installation of ceiling and floor skirting boards. Skirting boarding is a completely simple process that anyone can do without the help of professionals. If you follow the instructions below, then any house master will be able to install both plastic and wooden skirting boards without any problems.

The installation of a floor plinth made of plastic or wood has some differences during the installation process, therefore, before starting work, it is necessary to decide which plinth will be in the apartment.

The plastic skirting board is lightweight, inexpensive and goes well with modern linoleum or laminate flooring. But if the apartment has parquet floors made of expensive varieties of wood, the plastic skirting board will look undignified, and it is necessary to lay the wooden skirting board.

Installation of plastic skirting boards

We do it with our own hands quickly and efficiently. First of all, you need to purchase everything you need and prepare the tool. You should know that the installation of plastic skirting boards is impossible without additional connecting elements, which are also made of plastic and must be of the same color as the skirting board. Docking elements include:

  • Outside corner
  • Inner corner
  • Linear connector
  • End caps (left and right)

The standard length of the skirting board is 2.50 meters. Based on this, it is necessary to measure the walls in all rooms where the installation of plastic skirting boards will be carried out, add one standard skirting board for possible errors, calculate how many internal and external corner joints will be needed, as well as the number of end caps and linear elements. End caps are installed where the skirting board fits the doorway, and the linear elements allow you to connect the skirting boards running along long walls.

To complete the work, you will need the following tool:

  • Rotary hammer or drill
  • Dowels and screws
  • A hammer
  • Crosshead screwdriver
  • Roulette, but glued centimeter is better
  • Pencil
  • Awl
  • Miter box
  • Shaft hacksaw with fine teeth (slotting)

Video instruction. How to install a plastic skirting board on the floor

The miter box is a "P" shaped device that has slots at angles of 30, 45, 60 and 90 degrees and allows you to cut wooden blocks at certain angles with a special hacksaw with high accuracy.

When installing plastic skirting boards, the miter box can only be used for smooth sawing of straight sections of the skirting board, since the corners are formed using auxiliary elements.

Do-it-yourself installation of skirting boards begins with the longest wall. It should be remembered that the quality of work is directly proportional to the accuracy and thoroughness of all measurements.

A long wall can start at the doorframe and end at a right angle to the next wall. The plastic skirting board consists of two parts: a support and fastening base and a removable strip.

First you need to fix the "inner corner" element to the plinth and press this element against the beginning of the perpendicular wall. Then, moving towards the door, measure the total length of the plinth to doorway... Cut the required length of the skirting board, taking into account the line connection and the end cap.

Remove the removable strip, and fix the measured plinth with tape at several points. Using an awl and a hammer, through the base of the plinth, leave marks on the wall, taking into account that the first mark from the corner element is placed at 4-6 cm, and all subsequent marks are placed at 35-45 cm.

Separate the plinth from the wall and with a puncher, if the walls are brick or concrete, fill holes for the dowels along all the marks. Then hammer in the dowels and using self-tapping screws fix the plinth in place. The next measurement should be made from the installed corner element. And just as consistently bypass the entire perimeter of the room.

The most important thing is accurate measurements. If you have little experience in such work, then it is always best to cut off a slightly smaller piece of the baseboard. It is not too difficult to fit it in length, but a short piece can be thrown away.

The advantages of plastic skirting boards are:

  • Low price
  • Absolute moisture resistance
  • Not susceptible to decay

The disadvantages include fragility and fragility.

Installation of wooden skirting boards

Installing them yourself is a little more difficult than plastic skirting boards. Unlike plastic skirting boards, wooden skirting boards are made of solid wood, do not have a removable part and auxiliary joining elements.

When installing wooden skirting boards with your own hands, the miter box becomes the main tool, since only with this device you can cut the skirting board at an angle of 450. Do not expect that the angle of the walls, especially in old buildings, is made strictly at 90º, so you should stock up in advance with putty, which will have to hide construction defects.

Video how to join a floor plinth. How to use a miter box. How to cut correctly

Do-it-yourself plinth installation can be started by measuring the perimeter of the room in advance and using a miter box to cut and mark all the wooden elements.

Installation of a wooden plinth is also carried out using self-tapping screws. They are usually screwed into the baseboard at regular intervals until a sharp point appears on the other side. Then the plinth is tightly pressed against the wall, the points from the screws are marked with a pencil and then, using a drill or punch, depending on the type of wall, holes are prepared for the dowels.

To prevent possible cracks in the skirting board, holes are first drilled with a thin drill and then self-tapping screws are screwed into them. Installation of wooden plinths ends with a thorough filling of places where the wall is not quite even, as well as all possible construction defects.

Solid wood skirting boards have undeniable advantages:

  • Wood is an environmentally friendly material
  • Products are strong and durable

There are also disadvantages:

  • Possibility of mold, wood pests
  • Wooden skirting boards are not moisture resistant
  • High price
