Making a metal chair

How to make a metal chair yourself, at home? A chair is made of duralumin or steel pipes with a diameter of 18-22 mm. If steel pipes are used for the chair frame, the rear legs (detail D) are optional. Frame metal chair can be assembled from two halves by connecting them together using wooden or metal bushings (bougie). The sleeves should fit tightly into the connected ends of the tubes. They are fixed using through metal studs with a diameter of 2-3 mm.

The bending of the frame of a metal chair presents some difficulty. It is most convenient to bend using the device described in, and the plasma.

Draw the shape of the chair in two projections (side and top) on a sheet of plywood by cells. It will be a plaza. Front flexible pipe remember to fill them tightly with sand.

Bending the tube, fit it along the contour on the plasma. Only in this case you will be able to quite simply and easily achieve the desired shape of the chair frame. Reinforce the frame with two crossbars and rear legs made of the same pipes. The rungs and legs are screwed in with wooden plugs.

Profile pipe is a very versatile material. In addition to its widest use in industry, the pipe finds active use in private construction. When building small forms, craftsmen give preference to a material of a smaller section than in industrial use. The most popular are pipes with a cross section of 100x50 and 80x80 mm, from which frames for houses, outbuildings, gazebos and sheds are constructed. Erected from shaped pipes also fences with gates. In addition, recently, furniture from a profile pipe, which is made from thin-walled elements with a section of 40x25 or 20x20 mm, has been very popular. How to make a table and chair from a shaped pipe, we will tell you in our today's article.

It is not surprising that profile pipes are so actively used for the construction of country and home furniture - they have a number of undeniable and significant advantages.

  • Thin-walled elements weigh a little, therefore the final structure is also lightweight.
  • Thanks to the stiffening ribs, a table made of a profile pipe (or other piece of furniture) will be very strong and withstand quite high loads. You can even make a workbench out of shaped pipes - and it will carry almost any work for which you will use it.
  • The geometric shape of the profile pipes is also considered very successful among the craftsmen: due to the rectangular or square cross-section, they are compact during storage and transportation, they are easy to assemble and provide optimal connection with the planes. That, we note, guarantees high stability of the structure as a whole.
  • The relatively low cost of the material, which makes it possible to save on details without losing quality and aesthetics, cannot but rejoice.
  • Another attractive side of chairs and tables made of a profile pipe is their ease of installation. Elements can be connected both by bolts and by welding. And for the last option welding machine you don't have to buy or rent: household equipment is enough for processing a profile pipe.
  • Wear resistance and indifference to aggressive influences (temperature extremes, atmospheric precipitation, etc.) makes it possible to use furniture made of shaped pipes outdoors.
  • Products made from this material are durable. Even without additional processing, the frame will serve for several decades. And if you protect it from corrosion, then almost forever.

The only drawback of the profile pipe is the difficulty in obtaining a bend. However, this problem can be solved: in the absence of a machine tool, the element can be given a predetermined curvature by filling with sand during bending.

Good start: simple table

Diy profile pipe table

If you have never taken up the manufacture of furniture from this material, we recommend starting with the most primitive option. Maybe it is not very aesthetic, but you can practice on it at work, and then use it as a workbench or give it under the schoolchildren's desk - teenagers simply "burn" furniture, and even a hyperactive child cannot break such a table.

To cut the elements you need a grinder

Algorithm of actions

  • Creation of a drawing indicating the dimensions of all elements of the planned product.
  • Cutting profile pipes into parts. In its simplest form, you will need four leg legs, two short struts and one long one. If you do not like the "extra" elements under the countertop, you can make two short and two long parts from the corner, which will be reinforced directly into the surface.
  • The frame is welded or bolted together with a mandatory check for right angles between the elements. If you prefer the "invisible" option, the rectangle on which the table top will fit must be additionally reinforced with corners.
  • The tabletop can be cut from a fiberboard plate, or from thick plastic, you can take a ready-made one by removing it from the old table.

Any other product can be made in a similar way. The only thing that is required at the initial stage of furniture manufacturing is detailed drawing... All parts in it can initially be wooden; you simply replace them with elements from shaped pipes.

For craftsmen who have reached perfection: the loft-style table

If there is a lack of space in the room or if you do not want to clutter up the space in the room, we propose to build a two-legged table, “fastened” to the wall. The manufacturing principle is the same, with some deviations from the topic.

  • Two legs are harvested, spacer structures can be completely abandoned.
  • The other two posts are replaced with sturdy brackets that screw directly into the wall.
  • All elements are checked for perpendicularity.
  • A tabletop is installed on the resulting frame.

Advice from experienced craftsmen: If you intend to use furniture made of shaped pipes in the house, buy attachments for the legs at the hardware store so as not to spoil the flooring.

Original solution: side table

Seats

A table without seating is of little use. The simplest of these is a stool. In principle, its manufacture is generally consistent with the already described algorithm. However, for greater strength and ease of use, some subtleties must be taken into account when drawing up a drawing.

  • The frame under the seat must be mandatory so that the stool can support the weight of a person of any size.
  • If the stool is high, like a bar stool, the racks must necessarily have a spacer frame. It can be welded either at a distance of 5-10 cm from the floor, or so that the seated person can put his legs on the crossbar.

When you master the manufacture of stools, you can move on to the production of chairs and even armchairs. The base remains the same (if you made a stool with straight legs). To get a chair, it is enough just to cut one of the pairs of uprights to a greater length and attend to the crossbars between the backrest supports.

Making armchairs will require more complex calculations. All the legs will have to be lengthened, but one pair is larger, the other, which will serve as armrest stands, less.

Bar stools at the bottom should have an extra frame

With experience, the master is able to make a solid dining set

Garden set

For suburban area, if you spend a lot of time on it and like to have some tea in the fresh air, a table with a bench made of profile pipes with your own hands would be a good solution. The set can be placed both directly in the garden and in the yard next to the house.

To make such a set, you will need:

  • Pipes with a cross section of 40 × 25 mm with a wall thickness of 2 mm with a total length of 370 cm;
  • Pipes with a section of 25 × 25 mm with a wall thickness of 2 mm with a total length of 570 cm;
  • Board 25x80 mm in the amount of 11 pieces, if the length of the element is 124 cm;
  • Self-tapping screws in the amount of 50 pcs. (we take with a margin).

From tools, a grinder, a drill with drills for metal, a welding machine, a tape measure are useful. Step by step manufacturing is as follows.

  1. Pipes with a cross section of 45x25 are cut into the required number of elements.
  2. From the parts, 2 brackets are made by welding, from which a folding table should be made.
  3. The ends are welded with steel plugs using the mentioned apparatus.
  4. At the next stage, careful measurements are taken and holes are drilled in the right places.
  5. In accordance with the scheme, both types of profile pipes are cut - blanks are made for the bench.
  6. The frame details are welded.
  7. The spacer is mounted.
  8. Pipes with a section of 25x25 mm are cut; of them is formed folding leg... It is performed by the letter P.
  9. The seams of the frame are cleaned and treated with an anti-corrosion compound.
  10. At the same time, boards are sawn into elements of the appropriate length. They are sanded until smooth and impregnated with antiseptics.
  11. Ready-made tabletop elements are attached to the frame.

The last step is to fix the stops with the axes and expand the pipe ends.

Furniture made of plastic pipes

It is also a very popular idea: such tables and chairs are very cheap, and they can be moved without difficulty at all, since they are made of extremely lightweight material. Craftsmen from plastic pipes are able to assemble anything from a shelving unit to a bunk bed. But it is still recommended to start with something extremely simple. For example, an elementary stool consisting of a base frame with legs and a seat. If you wish, you can turn it into a chair by lengthening one pair of uprights, as we did when making furniture from shaped pipes.

Stages of work:

  • cutting plastic pipes according to the drawing;
  • assembly of the frame;
  • installation of legs;
  • installation on the seat frame. The basis is taken from thick plywood, from which you need to cut a workpiece of the appropriate size. The "stand" is fastened with self-tapping screws;
  • welding of legs with a frame.

The final touch is to check the strength of the structure. If desired, a pillow is tied to the seat for the comfort of spending time on the chair.

With your own hands, furniture made of plastic pipes can be made collapsible using fittings. This option is especially successful for summer cottage use: when cleaning tables, chairs and other furniture for storage will take up a minimum of space.

Having mastered the basic techniques of working with plastic pipes, you will be able to make real masterpieces.

A rocking chair will require a high degree of craftsmanship

Wooden furniture has always been popular. But there are times when its use is impractical. The metal is strong and durable, and the manufactured furniture is stylish and elegant. Working with this material is not very difficult. It is only necessary to have experience with welding and the required materials.

How to make metal chairs yourself

A pipe bender is required to assemble metal chairs. You can assemble it yourself. For this, fix two bars on the workbench in the workshop. Between them you need to leave a gap where it is inserted metal pipe... Fill it with sand, insert wooden plugs at the ends and then you can give the blanks the required shape.

Attention! Before starting work, you need to draw up a drawing in detail. Draw the desired chair model. Indicate the dimensions of all furniture items. According to the drawing, make a full-size stencil from a plywood sheet, by which you can further check the accuracy of the workpieces made.

Which metal to choose

Metal is the most durable material for making furniture. When properly processed, it is not afraid of moisture or sun rays... There are 3 types of metals suitable for making chairs:

Required tools and materials

To work you will need:

Metal chairs: step by step

Today, high chairs on a steel frame, which are called bar chairs, are usually found in interiors. Products can also be made with a small back and armrests.

Attention! For the manufacture of this furniture, steel tubes with a cross section of about 22-27 mm are required. Also welding machine, metal scissors, tape measure and pencil, sander or sandpaper. You will need paint or varnish to cover the stool.

The work is carried out in the following order:

The chair seat is prepared. Next, they begin to make legs. Why from square profile with a section of 4 cm, you need to cut 4 parts of the required size. The height of the product must be determined independently, taking into account the needs. The seat must be approximately 45 cm below the table level.

Do not weld the prepared legs to the body. Assess whether the chair is level, only then finish welding. In this chair, you need to make a footrest. Mark the area where the underlay will be located. The optimum distance is approximately 32-37 cm from the seat. Cut pieces of the required size from the steel pipe, place between the legs, and secure with a welding machine.

Metal chairs fit perfectly into the interior of any room and can be used as garden furniture... Metal only seems "heavy", but the designers prove the opposite with their examples of work. And if this is not the only piece of furniture, but several, made in a general style and located in one composition, then this will be a real decoration of any room.

The author had a lot of steel square pipes at work, which he decided to appropriate. It was decided to make a chair from such a wonderful material. The author is working with metal for the first time, so this article can help other DIYers who are not yet experienced in this type of activity.

DIY materials and tools:

Materials:
- square steel pipes;
- wood panel or other material for making the seat itself;
- plastic plugs for square pipes;
- primer for metal and paint;
- putty for metal;
- beeswax;
- wood glue;
- screws.

Tools:
- grinder;
- welding;
- drill;
- a hammer;
- screwdriver;
- sandpaper (80, 100, 150, 240 grit);
- clamps;
- putty knife;
- disk;
- if the chair will be made round, it is advisable to have a jigsaw.

Chair making process:

Step one. We cut blanks
First, you have to decide on the size of the chair, make it for your height so that it is comfortable to sit. After that the workpieces can be cut. You should have four long legs, four long bottom struts, and four top short struts. The most difficult part of this business is to correctly mark and cut off the corners. The author worked hand tools, so he did not do it very accurately, but this is not critical, because then the welded seams are still cleaned, processed with putty and painted, they are not visible.

Also at this stage, clean the pipes from rust and other contaminants.
If you look from another angle, the chair is made of four figures in the form of "A".

Step two. We weld blanks
Next, we take welding and weld the blanks. In this case, it is important not to rush so that the chair is even. Don't try too hard on the quality of the welds, because they will still be processed. The main thing is that everything is strong.

When everything is welded, take a grinder and clean the welded seams. They need to be made smooth, flush with the pipes. This can be done manually, using files and sandpaper, although it will be more difficult.

At the end of this step, the author drills the mounting holes in the top four pipes. The author chose the hole diameter of 4 mm to securely fix the seat with screws. There are 8 screws in total, two in each pipe. Although, in principle, four is enough.

Step three. Putty on welded seams
To hide the sinks after welding and other defects, the author uses a putty. Apply a small amount to the joints and let the putty dry completely. Finally, sand the areas well with sandpaper. Now there is a feeling that all these pipes have always been one-piece construction.

Step four. Refinement of the legs
Even with fairly accurate calculations, it may turn out that the chair on a flat surface will sway due to the different lengths of the legs. This is not scary, because we are faced with the task of aligning the legs so that the chair is level. Mark, cut, process the edges.

Step five. Painting
Before painting, thoroughly clean the metal, removing all rust and dirt. It is also advisable to take a rag, moisten it with acetone and wipe the pipes if there are traces of oil on them. Now the metal can be painted; instead of paint, you can use a primer. The author decided to paint his chair black. To make the chair shine, the author varnished the primer.

Step six. Seat making
The author bought a pine wood panel to make the seat. It was cut into squares measuring 30x30 cm. To make the seat strong, the author glues these two sheets together with wood glue, holding them well with clamps.

When the glue is completely dry, you can cut out a circle. Draw it on the workpiece, and then cut it out with a jigsaw, or with a hand jigsaw.

Next comes the grinding stage. Use coarse sandpaper first, and then finer and finer. Your task will be to make the tree as smooth as possible.

At the end, the wood will be impregnated to protect it from moisture, moreover, this will make the tree more beautiful. The author initially made the wrong decision and soaked the wood with mineral oil. The point is that this oil never dries out. In this regard, a layer of beeswax was also applied on top to create a film that does not allow mineral oil to pass through.

To do the right thing, use linseed oil, and better boiled (natural drying oil). Also, some people mix linseed oil with beeswax and soak wood as well. Buff the seat with a cloth to make it shine.

Step seven. Assembling the chair
Finally, you just need to attach the wooden seat to the steel frame. Here you will need screws or screws. If you will be using wood screws, drill holes in the wood for them.

Chairs and stools on a metal frame began to be produced at the beginning of the 20th century and immediately won the sympathy of consumers. The metal base is able to withstand a lot of weight, which makes such furniture practical and durable. Besides the frame, chairs are known to have a seat and back. Today there are many options for their execution, depending on the purpose of the premises in which they will be located.

Furniture on a metal frame for the kitchen is made of aluminum or steel pipe, which can be given the most various forms depending on the imagination of the designer. The final product is coated with several layers of chrome or paint. Often, chrome-plated legs are decorated with additional decorative elements made of pipes of a smaller diameter.

The mysterious shine of metal adds elegance and solemnity to the interior of the room. He behaves great in combination with other finishing materials... There are models of frame chairs, where the upholstery is used only for seats, and there are options where the frame is completely hidden under a decorative cover.

Manufacturing features

The service life of a metal product depends on the method and material of manufacture. Aluminum structures are considered to be more durable and therefore more expensive. Steel pipes with a diameter of 15-25 mm are more affordable and can be made with sharp corners or with smooth lines.

There are two main ways of fixing the components of frame furniture:

  1. Welding the method is used primarily in mass production.
  2. Made... This method uses bolts, nuts and a pipe bender. With their help, craftsmen assemble chairs with their own hands.

Plastic

A variety of, sometimes even unexpected materials can be used as trim for seats and backs:

  • The combination of plastic seats and metal legs in furniture is the most practical and one of the most common options for the kitchen. These materials are easy to care for, moisture and high temperatures. Modern technologies allow you to give plastic the most unexpected bends and shapes. Pleases with a choice and color palette plastic seats. it a good option not only for a city apartment, but also for a summer cafe, as well as an open veranda country house... One of the types of plastic is polycarbonate. Products from it in last years are becoming more and more popular. It is considered to be a more durable material than plastic. Polycarbonate chairs can support a person weighing about 200 kg.

Tree

  • Wooden backs and seats can be one piece or two completely independent parts. They can be decorated with openwork carvings or simply varnished or painted. Italian products are especially appreciated. It is durable, non-toxic and adds comfort and warmth to the room. Wooden chairs go well with kitchen set the same texture.

Rattan

  • It is an environmentally friendly natural material. Such furniture does not require special care - it is enough to periodically remove dust from its elements with a damp cloth or a vacuum cleaner. Rattan can withstand frost down to -35C, so such chairs can be safely left in the summer. country houses, on an uninsulated veranda and in other unheated rooms. Since rattan is not afraid of moisture, such furniture models are quite suitable for the kitchen. Considering that chairs are subjected to intense stress every day, the service life of rattan products is at least 10 years.

Glass

  • For the production of furniture, not ordinary glass, which is found in everyday use, is used, but a special material with increased strength. Such glass is difficult to break and even scratch; it can withstand heavy loads. If, nevertheless, the glass frame breaks, then it will be impossible to cut yourself against the fragments, because they have no sharp edges. Such glass is used in the manufacture of automotive parts.

Leather and fabric

  • These materials are used for upholstery of chairs. Each of them is good in its own way. The upholstered seat is pleasant to touch with your hand. This texture is warm, does not slip and does not stick to the body. However, fabric is difficult to care for, especially when you consider that the kitchen is not the cleanest place in the house. Fabric upholstery, if it is not removable covers, should be cleaned with a steam cleaner or a simple vacuum cleaner for lack of the first. For tough stains, it is suggested to use a cleaning agent specially formulated for upholstered furniture or ordinary soapy water. Leather and its derivatives are more advantageous materials in terms of exploitation. It is moisture resistant and more durable than fabric.

Once or twice a year, for prophylaxis, the surface of the stool should be treated with a special agent for leather products to renew its color and add gloss to it.

Folding models

  • Component parts for them can be purchased or ordered separately. You can assemble such furniture with your own hands. The collapsible design is good for a summer residence or a small kitchen. If not necessary, the chair can be disassembled and it will take up a minimum of space, and reassemble it before the guests arrive.

Stackable chairs

  • Such models have long been successfully used by eminent designers around the world. They dress on top of each other like a children's pyramid and significantly save space. An example of stackable models can be seen in outdoor cafes.

Variety of designs

Kitchen chairs can be used both in the home kitchen and in catering places. Depending on this, they are divided into several subgroups:

  • Dining... This type includes classic chairs with a standard backrest height. It is believed that for a person of average height 167-173 cm, following sizes... The height from the highest point of the back to the floor should be 80-90 cm, of which 40-45 cm is the distance from the surface of the seat to the floor 40-45 cm, and the same is the height of the back itself. The most comfortable width of the back of the chair and its seat is approximately 43-45 cm.
  • Vienna... Their design is characterized by smooth lines, a round seat and high legs with a thin diameter. Despite the fact that the classic model of the Viennese chair has a wooden base, modern manufacturers offer variants of this design in a metal version.
  • Bar chairs differ from dining options dimensions. Their height is greater than the standard size and is selected individually, depending on the height of the bar itself.

There are several types of bar stools:

  • Stool... This option is inconvenient and is not intended for prolonged sitting due to the lack of back support to lean back on.
  • Chair with backrest... At the same time, the height of the backrest can be different - from the very minimum, almost conditional, to high with a headrest.
  • Armchair... This model has a high back, and often even soft armrests, which provides him with the maximum level of comfort. It is this option, judging by the reviews, is most often chosen for home use.

Benefits

  • Durability and strength... The service life of such products is calculated in decades. And since they are able to withstand heavy loads, they are suitable for people with problem weight.
  • If any of the components is out of order or you are simply tired of the shape or color of the chair, there is always opportunity to replace seat and (or) back, which can also be made by hand. In this case, the metal base will remain the same, and you will receive a completely new chair with minimal costs.
  • Folding models do not take up much space, and it is possible to use them in a small kitchen.
  • Variety of styles and colors... Depending on the finishing material, metal furniture can be used in different interiors: from modern to retro.
  • Practicality... Almost no maintenance is required for metal parts, especially if these are rigid structures without upholstery.
  • Wide range of prices... A variety of designs and auxiliary materials allows you to choose chairs on a metal frame for any income. In addition, steel and aluminum are cheaper than wood.
  • Sturdy one-piece construction will not allow the product to loosen, and fasteners in the form of bolts can always be tightened.

The disadvantages the described products can be attributed to their weight. Some models with a metal body are very heavy and difficult to move from place to place when cleaning.

The original color is also not happy with the variety. But it can always be changed, and if you do not like the white metal legs, they can be easily repainted or decorated in some other way.
