In the construction of houses is popular modern way roof coverings using euroslate - ondulin. This roofing material has many advantages, including ease of installation. It not only has an excellent price-quality ratio, but is also a versatile material, combining lightness and strength in operation.

Advantages of roofing material

Ondulin soft roofing material is made by impregnating a cellulose base with bitumen with the addition of various fillers, curing resins, and dyes.

In this regard, it has such undeniable advantages:

  • excellent waterproofing properties;
  • stable resistance to temperature fluctuations;
  • resistance to biological and chemical attack;
  • flexibility and elasticity;
  • minimum weight of roofing sheets.

If you decide to lay ondulin with your own hands, you need to remember about the shortcomings. Firstly, it is exposure to ultraviolet radiation and burnout of sheets. Secondly, a sharp decline strength under extreme temperature conditions.

That is why you should not cover the roof in the heat, because stepping on the ondulin canvas, you can deform it.

Roof covering methods

Laying ondulin on the roof can be done using several options for the actions of the masters:

For initial coverage. This is possible if the roof structure can be operated. But it is recommended to update the crate, produce high-quality vapor barrier, cover the joints with mounting tape.

Ondulin is the most popular roofing material of our days.

After all, this material is distinguished by high strength, durability, affordable cost and ease of installation.

The use of natural materials in the manufacture of ondulin allows the finished product to keep its color perfectly.

The service life of ondulin is approximately 50 years.

The material is environmentally friendly.

It absolutely does not perceive moisture in any form.

Fungi and microorganisms do not multiply in the material.

Ondulin perfectly sound and heat insulates the room.

He weighs a little.

Differs in flexibility and elasticity, accepts any form necessary to the assembler.

What makes the installation process of ondulin very simple.

Basic rules for roofing

There are very few of these rules.

But they should be known.

So:

  • when installing ondulin sheets, they step only on the convex parts. It is forbidden to step into the furrows between the waves!
  • installation is started only when the outside temperature is positive. Ideally, this is the end of spring - the beginning of summer.

    If this is not possible and it is necessary to lay sheets of ondulin at a low temperature, then the installation is carried out with great care. It is strictly forbidden to carry out the installation of ondulin at temperatures below -5 degrees.

    It is also undesirable to install ondulin on the roof at very high temperatures. Still, it includes bitumen;

  • for attaching sheets of ondulin to the boards of the crate, special nails are used. The installation technology provides that 20 nails will be used per sheet of material.

    This is a warranty requirement and if you hammer fewer nails, then it is likely that under the influence of the wind the ondulin will collapse or be torn off the roof. It is for this reason that the installation process must be carried out under constant control.

    And if you are laying ondulin not with your own hands, but hired people, then you should make sure that they know about 20 nails per sheet and follow this rule;

  • the crate to which the material is attached is made of a wooden block with a section of 60 x 40 mm.

    The pitch of the crate depends on the calculated angle of inclination of the roof slope:

  • With an angle of up to 10 degrees, a continuous coating of boards or OSB is performed.
  • If the angle is 10-15 degrees, then the step between the bars of the crate is 450 mm.
  • When the angle is more than 15 degrees, then the step of the bars can be up to 610 mm. If the step of the lathing bars is calculated incorrectly, then most likely the entire roof will fail.

    And you have to do everything again. Since the nailed sheet of ondulin is almost impossible to remove without damage.

  • the technique of laying sheets of ondulin prohibits making overlaps from four sheets of material in one corner. Very often this leads to deformation of the extreme parts of the material;
  • when installing the material, you should monitor the size of the overhang. If the overhang is very large, then the deflection of the sheet in this place is quite possible.

    If the overhang, on the contrary, is very short, then debris carried by the wind will clog under it and precipitation will fall;

  • Before starting the actual installation work, carefully study the installation instructions. After all, the durability of the roof of your house depends on how well the installation will be performed.

Step-by-step instructions for mounting sheets

  1. Before laying the ondulin, the crate should be filled. The bars of the crate are nailed to the rafters from each other at the right distance.

    To maintain the parallelism of the bars of the crate, use a wooden bar of the desired length - the conductor.

  2. The laying method does not affect the marking of the ondulin in any way. The main thing is that the markup is done neatly.

    To do this, use a colored pencil or marker and a convenient cut sheet.

  3. Ondulin sheets are best cut with an ordinary hacksaw for wood, but with small teeth. And so that the hacksaw does not get stuck in soft material, it should be lubricated with oil during operation.

    It is also acceptable to use reciprocating or circular electric saws.

  4. The mass of one sheet of ondulin is 6 kg. Even one person can lift it to the roof and lay it.
  5. They begin to lay sheets of material from the edge of the roof, which is located from the prevailing winds on the opposite side. The second row of sheets begins with laying half of the sheet, so that then the overlap in the corner is three sheets.

    With this method of installation, laying is much faster.

  6. Sheets should be nailed to the crate at the ends of the sheets in each wave, also along the edges of the overlaps from both sides and in the end overlap. One sheet is nailed with 20 nails.
  7. In order for the fastener to occur exactly along the center line of the crate bar, the rope is pulled between the extreme nails.
  8. For the device of valleys, special elements should be used. To install them, you need to arrange an additional crate.
  9. Fastening of the ridge elements starts from the leeward side. Definitely with a twist.

    The overlap is 125 mm or more. When attaching the element, nails are driven into each wave of the sheet, which is joined to the ridge.

  10. The design of the side joint is done in the same way as the design of the valleys. For waterproofing, a special silicone sealant is used.
  11. For the design of the forceps, as a rule, the edge of the sheet of material is bent and fixed to the gable board. But in order to be able to use such a method, it is necessary that the street has heat.

    Then the ondulin sheet softens and bends easily.

  12. In order for the roof rib to be properly arranged, ridge or gable elements are used.
  13. In places of end joints of ondulin sheets with vertical walls, ventilation and chimneys, a covering apron is used. For reliable waterproofing of the junction, silicone sealant is used.

    The apron must be nailed to the material on each wave.

  14. For the design of the forceps, a special forceps element is used. Sometimes, in extreme cases, a ridge element can also be installed.
  15. In order to organize the lighting of the attic, use a roof window. It is fixed on every wave.

    The top sheet is laid so that there is an overlap over the base of the window.

  16. To issue a release through the roof of ondulin ventilation ducts, use a special element called "onduline ventilation tube". Strengthen it on every wave.

    The top sheet must be overlapped over the base of this element.

  17. In order to eliminate the gap between the sheets, the elements of the ridge and on the cornice, a "frame filler" is used.
  18. If the elements of the crate are not wooden, but metal, then self-tapping screws are used to fasten ondulin sheets. Do not screw them in by hand.

    Screwdriver required.

Laying over an old roof

In principle, if a decision is made to arrange a roof from ondulin, then it is better to dismantle the material that was previously used.

But if you wish, you can lay ondulin on top of the old material.

It all starts with preparation.

First of all, we examine the old material.

We remove everything that should not be there from the roof: branches, leaves, other debris.

All branches that come into contact with the roof should be cut.

If this is not done, then with a strong wind, such branches will most likely break and damage the roofing material.

If during the inspection defects are found: chips and cracks on the slate, deformation of the corrugated board or metal tiles, bubbles on the roofing material, then they should be eliminated.

Cut bubbles.

Align bent pieces.

Nothing should interfere with the laying of ondulin.

Now you need to arrange the crate.

But it is not required everywhere.

If roofing material is laid on the slopes and no serious defects are found, then the sheets can be mounted on the old crate.

If ondulin is to be mounted on a seam or corrugated roof, then two crates are made:

  • a vertical crate is necessary so that the protrusions on the metal roof do not interfere with the laying of the horizontal crate;
  • horizontal crate (standard for ondulin).

The technology for laying ondulin sheets is standard.

We mount additional elements

One of the important elements on the roof is the valley.

That is inner corner, which is formed by two slopes.

In this place, there is a high probability of leaks during a snowy winter, and therefore, its device is approached with special care.

More about the device.

About the repair of the roof in the country in. Repair various kinds roofs: tiles, metal tiles, rolled, slate.

About installing rafters with your own hands. Requirements for the truss system, design, types and features of truss systems, installation methods.

In those places where valleys are formed, a separate, reinforced crate is made at the stage of lathing.

The width of the board must be at least 100 mm.

Two boards are laid along the line of intersection of the slopes.

The valley gutter is placed exactly between the boards.

And the shelves of the valley rest on these boards with their entire plane.

We mount the valley from ondulin:

  • We begin the installation of elements from the eaves. We lay the first element flush with and fix it in the upper corners with the help of two self-tapping screws;
  • the following elements are laid, overlapping 15 cm;
  • we perform marking and cutting sheets of ondulin. To do this, we use a hacksaw for wood, an electric jigsaw or a manual circular saw;
  • we lay the sheet on the crate so that the cut coincides with the boundaries of the valley gutter. Now ondulin and valley can be fixed.

    Nails should be driven in at a distance of 5 cm from the edge of the sheet in each wave. At the same time we fix both ondulin and valley;

  • the first element of the valley is cut flush with the eaves.

Gable element ondulin has a length of 1.04 meters.

The useful length of this element is only 96 centimeters, because 8 centimeters go to overlap.

Gable elements are installed starting from the eaves to the roof ridge with an overlap.

There are transverse protrusions on the elements - these are the places of overlap.

used to decorate the skate.

The length of the element is 1.06 meters.

Useful length 98 cm and 8 cm overlap.

To decorate the ridge, a covering apron made of ondulin is installed on both slopes with an overlap of 4 cm.

A distance of 1 cm is left between the upper edges of the covering aprons so that the air fully escapes.

The joint of the aprons is covered with a ridge element.

A ridge end element is installed on each side along the edges of the ridge.

Fastening is made in each wave of the sheet, which is located below.

When purchasing ondulin sheets, you should be aware that sheets and additional elements work best when they are produced by the same company.

The same applies to sealants: tapes and pastes.

Therefore, if you are interested in high quality roofing, immediately, in one place, purchase everything.

And in appearance there will be no differences, and it will be much easier to mount everything.

And the quality of the roof will be very high!

Video on how to cover the roof with ondulin.

Covering the roof of the bath with ondulin is one of the most popular solutions. And this is due not at all to the low cost of roofing, but to the features of operation, the loads acting on the roof of the bath and the ongoing processes.

We can safely say that covering the bath with ondulin is more cost-effective than, for example, metal tiles. Why?

During the use of the bath for its intended purpose, the temperature and humidity of the air are very high. Steam penetrates through the ceiling and accumulates in the attic. If the roof is not insulated, then the condensate settles on the lower part of the roofing, flows onto the wooden rafters and the crate. Moreover, the lower the air temperature outside, the more moisture settles on the surfaces. And moisture, as you know, is the main enemy of any roof.

Consider another situation where the bath is periodically operated in winter time when there is a layer of snow on the roof. Metal roofing has a high thermal conductivity. When the roof warms up, the snow cover begins to thaw, and then freeze, forming ice. Under such conditions, corrosion processes are rapidly progressing, which leads to the need for maintenance, repair or even replacement of the roofing.

Considering all of the above situations, we conclude: a bath requires a roofing with low thermal conductivity and impervious to moisture. Optimal solution- ondulin, which:

  • in the production process, it is impregnated with bitumen from all sides, after which it perfectly tolerates operation in conditions of high humidity;
  • does not collapse due to several scratches that have appeared;
  • heats up quickly and prevents condensation on the surface;
  • does not make noise when it rains;
  • dries quickly;
  • it is light in weight, which reduces the load on the foundation.

However, you should not expect that ondulin will last 50 years. This material is not characterized by high strength and wear resistance. Subject to all installation rules, the roof will last 15-20 years, after which the coating will need to be renewed due to the loss of the original shade and, possibly, shape by ondulin.

Important! Among the disadvantages of ondulin is high flammability. But this material is not prone to spontaneous combustion, it only supports combustion. This disadvantage can also be considered as an advantage, since with a quick exit of fire to the outside, it is possible to save the main part of the building.

Types of ondulin

Ondulin is produced in three versions. Sheets have different sizes and weight, but are produced using a single technology.

NameTechnical specificationsPeculiarities

195 x 96 cm - dimensions.
3 mm - thickness.
6.3 kg - weight.
There are markings on the sheets, relying on which it is convenient to drive in nails. There is a hydrobarrier lock.

On sheets of 10 waves.

195 x 76 cm - dimensions.
3 mm - thickness.
5 kg - weight.
The narrowest eight-wave sheets.

When installing narrow sheets, there will be more longitudinal overlaps, respectively, the overall rigidity of the roof and its bearing capacity will increase.

100 x 75 cm - dimensions.
2.6 mm - thickness.
2.5 kg - weight.
The best option for baths with a small or complexly shaped roof. The small dimensions of the eight-wave sheets reduce the amount of scraps and waste.

The waves of all types of ondulin are the same - 9.5 cm pitch and 3.8 cm height. To minimize the amount of waste when arranging the roof, you can combine different sheets.

Ondulin installation rules

The installation rules are as simple as possible, remember and apply them even to those who have not previously been involved in the installation of roofing.

Bituminous sheets are fastened either to a solid or to a sparse crate, observing the recommended overlap sizes. The exact data is presented in the tables below.

Data for roofs with a slope of 5-10 degrees.

The crate is arranged solid.

Important! In all situations under consideration, the edge of the ondulin sheet on the cornice cannot be further than 35 mm from the edge of the crate.

General rules for the installation of bitumen sheets.

ruleDescription

When working on the roof, be sure to use a safety belt and rope.

Safety ropes must not be attached to the heads of chimneys or ventilation pipes.

To move on the roof, it is necessary to use a ladder with a hook, ladders with transverse bars to support the legs.

Rain, hail, fog, ice, wind at a speed of more than 10 m / s - under such weather conditions, laying sheets is prohibited.

Bitumen sheets are laid strictly at air temperatures above -5°C, but not more than +30°C. In hot weather, ondulin becomes too plastic and it is inconvenient to work with it, especially for beginners.

It is convenient to mark the sheets with a colored pencil, using a ruler, a rail, a stretched thread or a smooth factory edge of another sheet of ondulin.

Determine the direction of the prevailing winds for your area. Laying sheets must begin from the lower edge of the roof, on the side where there is no wind.

Stretching or compressing bitumen sheets by more than 1 cm is highly discouraged.

The second, and then every even row, should not begin with a whole sheet, but with a sawn in two lengthwise.

In one place, 4 corners of the sheets should not converge at once, otherwise deformation cannot be avoided roofing material.

● All nails are driven into the upper crest of the wave at right angles to the crate.

● The first four nails are driven into the corners of the sheet.

● Bottom and top nails are hammered into each comb.

● In the central part, the nails are driven in through one wave so that the ondulin does not deform.

● Nails are driven into the overlapping edge wave during the installation of the next sheet.

Calculation of roofing and additional elements for the roof of the bath

Step 1. Calculation of the number of sheets.

To begin with, the roof must be measured.

Initial data: ridge length 8 m, gable length 16 m, slope length 4 m, total roof area 64 m2.

For the calculation, we take a sheet of ondulin 1 m 95 cm long and 95 cm wide.

The useful area of the sheets depends on the slope of the roof:

  • 5-10 degrees - 1.29 m2;
  • 10-15 degrees - 1.54 m2;
  • 15 degrees and above - 1.56 m2.

In our case, the useful area of one sheet will be 1.56 m2.

To find out the number of sheets, you need to divide the total roof area by the usable area of \u200b\u200bone sheet and round up to a whole value.

64 m2: 1.56 m2 = 42 sheets.

Professionals advise purchasing sheets from stocks of 5-10% of the total. So, for a roof area of 64 square meters it is recommended to purchase 45 sheets of ondulin.

Step 2. Calculation of the number of ridge bars.

In addition to directly bituminous sheets, you will need a ridge bar. The useful length of one plank is 85 cm.

Accordingly, we divide the length of the roof ridge by the useful length of the plank and get the required amount.

8 m: 0.85 m = 10 planks.

Step 3. Calculation of the number of gable strips.

We use the formula that was used when calculating the number of ridge slats.

The useful length of the gable bar is 95 cm.

16 m: 0.95 m = 17 tongs.

Plus one spare tong, total 18 pieces.

Step 4 Calculate the number of nails.

One sheet of ondulin must be fixed with twenty nails. Multiply the number of sheets by the number of nails.

45 x 20 = 900 pieces.

Also, nails will be needed to fix the additional elements, so you should take it with a margin so as not to interrupt work due to suddenly running out of hardware.

We cover the roof with our own hands. Instruction

Stage 1. Mount the crate under the ondulin. Consider the slope of the roof to accurately determine the distance between the boards.

Before you start laying the coating, you need to nail bars under the gable and ridge strips for greater structural rigidity.

Fasten the bars at a distance of up to ten centimeters from the center of the ridge bar. This distance is chosen depending on how steep or gentle the slopes are. Skate is best to try on the roof in advance.

Stage 2. Attach a special apron bar that bends at various angles to the eaves. Due to its design, the element can be fixed at any distance from the edge of the cornice.

Fasten the elements with a five-centimeter overlap.

Stage 3. Install the wind board 3 cm above the level of the crate.

Prepare roofing for installation. Trim if necessary. Install the first cover sheet so that its long edge extends over the windboard. If a drip was installed before, then install the sheet flush with the edge of the roof.

If the presence of a drip is not provided, the sheet should hang over the edge of the roof by no more than five centimeters.

Stage 4. To protect the roof space from birds, insects and debris, use an eaves filler. To ensure ventilation of the under-roof space, make holes in the filler by squeezing out the material with a suitable tool at hand.

Stage 5. Begin the mounting process.

New nails have a strong, monolithic head. The shade of the cap corresponds to the color of the roofing material. Drive nails with a hammer, placing them perpendicular to the coating and the boards of the crate.

Stage 6. If it is necessary to install gable elements, then fix the wind board tightly to the ondulin, and the upper edge of the board should be 35 mm higher than the surface of the crate.

The tongs are mounted from the bottom up. The overlap of the tongs on each other is 12-15 cm.

Drive the nails in from above and from the side in increments of 31 cm, and in places where the fixation overlaps, pay extra attention.

Stage 7. Attach a horse. Planks are fastened, taking into account the direction of the winds. Determine in which direction it blows most often and mount the skate on the other side.

Take the sealant (cornice filler), free the holes and insert it under the plank.

Nail the skate along each underlying wave of the ondulin, alternately on each side.

Install the following ridge strips with an overlap of 15 cm and in such a way that the hydraulic barriers coincide.

Video - Analysis of possible errors

Internal junction of slopes

It is made using a valley plank.

Stage 1. Fasten boards or beams that will be additional support for the plank. The bar itself will be attached to these boards.

Stage 2. Take a sheet of roofing and fix it on the lower slope. Trim it if necessary.

Do not forget about the order of hammering fasteners.

Stage 3. Stick the sealing tape Ondutis BL in the places of overlapping of the valley elements for better tightness of the roof.

Stage 4. Nail the valley plank. Drive nails into each ridge underneath.

Stage 5. Fasten the seal.

Start attaching the sheets over the plank. The bottom edge should not be more than seven centimeters from the fixation point. Drive fasteners into each ridge along the bottom edge.

Consider an example on a roof with a slope greater than 15 degrees.

Under the ondulin, in this case, a sparse crate of boards is mounted with a step of 61 cm.

Stage 1. Fasten additional boards on the lower slope. Nail them in such a way that the tong fastener falls on them.

Stage 2. Take the sheet and install it on the lower slope of the sloping roof. Drive the hardware from below, then from above, and then in the center in a checkerboard pattern through one wave.

Stage 3. Attach the seal to the top edge of the fixed sheet. Lay the gable strips on top with an overlap of 15 cm.

From below, fix the bar with nails into each wave of the underlying ondulin.

Important! The lower edge of the sheet should not hang more than 7 cm from the attachment point.

Valley plank: installation

Endova - a roof element located at the junction of two slopes (inner corner).

Stage 1. There should be a solid base along the axis of the valley. The width of the crate is at least 25 cm from the central axis of the plank.

Stage 2. Lay items from bottom to top. Fasten the first bar with the removal of the lower edge by 5-7 cm, in the future it is not difficult to trim the excess.

On a note! To align the valley plank with respect to the axis as accurately as possible, fix it with a construction stapler on four sides. Drive the staples closer to the edges.

Lay and staple the rest of the elements in the same way with an overlap of 15 cm.

Stage 3. Ondulin sheets that go onto the valley bar, cut at a distance of 5-6 cm from the axis of the valley.

Fasten the sheets on both sides of the valley. Drive fasteners into each wave at a distance of 3-5 cm from the edges of the plank.

Horizontal joint of roof and wall: sealing

Actual for baths with adjoining verandas or terraces, as well as baths attached to the house.

To design the junction, a covering apron and Onduflash Super tape are used.

Stage 1. Nail an additional board or timber to the roof sheathing next to the wall to ensure greater structural strength.

Stage 2. Perform roofing installation.

Stage 3. Lay covering aprons with an overlap in one wave. One side of the additional elements should adjoin the wall, the other should lie on the bituminous sheets.

Fix the lower part of the elements with nails in each wave. Fix the upper part of the apron with self-tapping screws if the connection is not tight.

Stage 4. From the tape "Onduflash Super" cut a strip 15 cm wide. Stick the tape over the apron with the wall.

Stage 5. Secure the top of the sealing tape with a metal rail, into the holes of which screw the self-tapping screws.

Connecting a sloping roof to a wall: sealing

Actual for baths with a porch having a gable roof.

Stage 1. Nail a board or bars close to the wall on the crate.

Stage 2. Attach roofing material.

Stage 3. Stick "Onduband" or "Onduflash Super" at the junction of the wall and the coating to seal the connection.

Stage 4. Screw a metal rail to the top edge of the tape.

And secure the bottom edge of the tape with roofing nails.

Chimney passage: installation of additional elements

Almost every bath has a chimney. The only exceptions are saunas with electric heaters. The place where the chimney passes through the roof must be correctly designed to prevent leaks.

Stage 1. Start by finishing the front wall of the pipe. Try on a covering apron - it should adjoin the pipe so that there are 1 wave to the right and left of the walls).

Trim off the excess with a utility knife.

Put the apron in place and fasten it with nails, and do not drive them into the extreme waves.

Seal the corners of the apron with pieces of Onduflash Super tape.

Stage 2. Attach an apron strip (side connection) to the side walls of the pipe.

Cut off the excess. Nail the apron to the pre-mounted additional crate bars.

Stage 3. Stick the sealing tape on the back wall of the pipe and also on top of the aprons. For this, a tape 15 cm wide is enough.

Fix the sealing tape and apron with metal rails.

Apply polyurethane sealant between the top edge of the apron and the wall.

Stage 4. Fasten an additional sheet of ondulin behind the back wall of the chimney.

Bath roof repair. Step-by-step instruction

Consider the option of updating the bath roof without dismantling the old coating, which in this case is represented by galvanized corrugated board.

With the help of ondulin, you can eliminate all the shortcomings of the old roof:

  • poor quality joints leading to leakage;
  • increased wear of material with high thermal conductivity.

Stage 1. Take measurements and prepare boards with a thickness of at least 25 mm for mounting the battens and counter battens.

Nail boards over the old roofing, placing them parallel to the ridges of the corrugated board.

Nail the crate under the ondulin perpendicular to the fixed boards. The recommended batten spacing can be found in the tables above.

Stage 2. Start laying and fixing ondulin sheets. Due to the low weight of the sheets, an increased load on the bearing structures buildings and foundations.

Stage 3. Fix additional elements.

Repair of a roof is made with the shortest terms and with the minimum expenses.

Useful life hacks from professionals

Tip 1. You can cut the ondulin across using a regular wood saw. And so that the cutting edge does not clog with bitumen, periodically moisten it with water. You can also use silicone grease or oil.

But it is most convenient to use a jigsaw. And to clean the knife, just saw through any unnecessary wood block.

You can cut the bitumen sheet along the wave with an ordinary construction knife.

Tip 2. Nails need to be driven in, slightly sinking the hat into the coating. But at the same time, it is important to calculate the efforts so that the sheet is not broken with a hammer when trying to hammer the hardware as deep as possible.

Video - How to hammer nails

Tip 3. Dismantling an already nailed sheet without damaging it is not only problematic, but in most cases impossible. This is always worth remembering. Make sure that the sheet lies perfectly flat, only then start fixing. It is for this purpose that a guide thread is pulled along the lower edge of the crate.

Tip 4. If it became necessary to walk on the roofing with your feet, then never step between the waves. Place your foot exclusively on the top ridges.

Tip 5 Never throw away the installation instructions that will be included with the roofing material delivered to the site. Firstly, this instruction indicates all the necessary distances, overlaps and overhangs. And secondly, this instruction is a warranty card for materials.

Tip 6 Take care of your ondulin roof to extend its life by several years. Have your roof checked twice a year. Best time for this - October and May.

Make sure that the branches of shrubs and trees located next to the bath do not come into contact with the roof. If necessary, cut them in a timely manner with secateurs, otherwise roof repairs cannot be avoided.

Clean the ondulin with a broom at least twice a year. In the spring, you need to remove the garbage accumulated over the long winter, and in the fall you need to remove all the fallen leaves. All the debris that remains on the roof will definitely begin to rot. The roofing itself is unlikely to quickly collapse from this, but the service life will be reduced for sure.

Don't forget to clean your gutters.

On a note! Cleaning up after a rainstorm is much easier.

Completion of the main construction works can be called the arrangement of the roof. This is the last stage, after which they perform interior decoration and connect communications. Do-it-yourself ondulin coating can speed up roofing work.

This modern roofing material is made on a bitumen basis, it can be laid on a newly erected structure and on an old roof without prior dismantling. Ondulin is considered a universal material, since they cover roofs of any shape, area and angle of inclination. Subject to the laying rules, the coating is sealed and durable, able to withstand any natural phenomena.

Characteristic features of the material

Ondulin is considered an inexpensive, but high-tech material. It was invented by the French after the war in order to quickly rebuild old, dilapidated houses covered with slate, tiles or metal after bombing.

The technological process of covering the roof with ondulin implies the following: products with a wavy surface were molded from purified cellulose fibers, dyed and impregnated with bitumen. The result is a material with good water-repellent properties, resistant to sudden changes in temperature, lightweight, but able to withstand mechanical stress. Insignificant weight allows the material to be used for roof repair without dismantling the old coating.

Before laying ondulin on the roof, you should familiarize yourself with its advantages:

  • Easy installation. Roofing material can be laid in 1-2 days without the involvement of auxiliary workers, without experience and a special set of tools.
  • Minor weight. The mass of one standard sheet does not exceed 6 kg, therefore, under ondulin, you can not make a massive base or a complex foundation.
  • Flexibility. Bitumen-based materials are bendable, which makes it easier to install roofs on complex structures.
  • Acceptable cost. Specifications allow you to lay the material on any frame, both old and new, doing all the work yourself. This allows the homeowner to save on the installation of the roof.

Among the disadvantages of ondulin are the following:

  • service life does not exceed 20 years.
  • The color scheme consists of 4 main types: black, brown, red and green.
  • Under influence sun rays the pigment is destroyed, and the material fades.

How to cover the roof with ondulin correctly - features of the roof

The roof covered with ondulin is a roofing cake of the following composition:

  • truss system. For the manufacture of the frame, natural wood is used. Rafter legs have a size of 5 * 15 cm and are located at a distance of 0.5-0.8 m from each other. The roofing material is lightweight, so the frame does not require additional reinforcement.
  • Thermal insulation material. Covering the roof with ondulin with your own hands involves thermal insulation truss system. To do this, the space between the rafters is filled with glass wool, slag or basalt wool.
  • Vapor barrier layer. To protect the insulation from vapors coming from below and subsequent wetting, it is necessary to use a vapor barrier membrane. This material covers the thermal insulation from below.
  • Waterproofing works. Before laying ondulin, it is necessary to waterproof the roof. The waterproofing material protects wooden frame and thermal insulation from above from condensate or accidental leaks. Waterproofing is fixed on rafter legs ah, using a construction stapler.
  • Control grille. To provide ventilation inside the structure on the rafters on top waterproofing material stuffing rails. These actions are performed before the direct laying of ondulin.
  • crate. For the installation of an ondulin roof, a continuous crate is required using moisture-resistant plywood or made of boards with an unedged edge. In the case of boards, the step of the crate for ondulin is 10-15 cm. This design will prevent deformation of the roofing material during operation.
  • Ondulin. The last step is to cover the roof with ondulin. The sheets are attached to the crate using special nails, stacking up to 15 cm on top of each other. Immediately before laying, the wooden frame and other elements are protected from fire and decay using antiseptic solutions and flame retardants.

Required materials and tool kit

For the installation of ondulin, special tools are not used, which allows you to perform almost all the work yourself.

To resolve the issue of how to properly cover the roof with ondulin, you will need the following:

  • Roofing material, in particular ondulin sheets, in required quantity taking into account the margin for cutting and overlapping.
  • A ridge profile that covers the entire length of the roof. When determining the length of the product, one should not forget that at the junction the parts are overlapped from 10 to 25 cm.
  • Special fasteners. The most commonly used nails are carbon steel, painted in the same color as the material and having a rubber head.
  • Materials for the manufacture of crates, pre-treated with an antiseptic solution. It can be a board or bars with a section of 4 * 4 cm.
  • Waterproofing material, which can be used as a film or membrane.
  • Hacksaw and hammer.
  • Pencil and measuring tools.

Covering the roof with ondulin - step by step instructions

Despite the easy processing of the material and the simple installation technology, which even an inexperienced craftsman can handle, the work must be carried out at a high quality level, since the operational period and reliability of the structure depend on this.

When laying ondulin, you should follow the step-by-step instructions on how to cover the roof with ondulin:

  • The installed truss system is covered with waterproofing material. To do this, you need to cut the strips along the length of the slope and lay them perpendicular to the rafters, overlapping up to 15 cm. You can fix the material with a construction stapler, and the joints must be glued with adhesive tape.
  • On top of the waterproofing, a counter-lattice is hammered along the rafter legs. Reiki can be fastened with nails or self-tapping screws.
  • Next, the installation of the crate is carried out using moisture-resistant plywood for a solid version or bars located at a distance of 10 cm from each other. Before laying ondulin, the wooden frame is treated with an antiseptic and fire retardant.
  • Ondulin is laid on the crate. Work begins at the bottom of the slope, laying the sheets with an overlap of up to 15 cm. The installation of each next row is carried out with an offset of half a sheet and a vertical overlap of up to 20 cm.
  • Ondulin is fastened to the crate with special nails with a rubber cap with a consumption of up to 20 pieces per sheet.

How to lay - the rules

In order to avoid common mistakes during the installation process, we cover the roof with ondulin in compliance with the following rules:

  • The laying of the material should be carried out in dry weather at low air temperatures, since deformation of the sheets can be observed in the heat.
  • When installing ondulin, it must not be subjected to strong mechanical stress, this can cause deformation or damage to the material.

Let's remember school course geometry

The hip roof consists of 4 slopes. Two of them are in the shape of a trapezoid, and two more are in the shape of an isosceles triangle.

When installing rafters 4-5 meters long, a difference in the length of the sides of a triangle or trapezoid of 5 centimeters may seem insignificant. However, this difference makes isosceles triangles just triangles, and trapezoids - quadrilaterals with different side lengths.

“How might this affect the roofing materials laid on the roof?” - you ask. We answer in the most negative way.

Installation of ondulin must begin from the lower edge of the slope. Mounting the sheets in such a way that their upper and lower cuts are parallel to the lower cut of the slope will cause a wedge to form on the ridge on the slope.

In order to close it, you will have to cut each sheet of the upper edge individually, sitting on the roof. That is, a small difference in the size of the rafters will lead to a significant increase in waste, labor and cost. roofing works, and also significantly increase the likelihood of leaks and the fact that roof repairs will have to be done very often.

In addition, the row lines on adjacent slopes will not look parallel, which will give the roof a sloppy, unattractive look.

What needs to be done before starting the installation of ondulin

Before starting the installation of ondulin, it is necessary to check the correctness of the geometric shapes of the slopes. Or, as the builders say, check the geometry.

Anyone who is building a house with his own hands can do this work on his own, inviting only one assistant.

The task to be performed is quite simple - check the conformity of the dimensions of the sides of the slopes (triangles and trapezoids)

To perform this work, it is enough to use any strong thread or braided fishing line. It is not recommended to use a monofilament fishing line - it can stretch a lot.

The same length must be:

1. The sides of the trapezium.

2. Sides of triangles.

3. Diagonals of trapezoids.

Diagonals are the distances between the lower left and upper right points of the trapezoid, as well as between the lower right and upper left points.

Advice. Since the lateral sides of the trapezium in our case are simultaneously lateral triangles, the execution of points 1 and 2 can be combined.

If the above dimensions are the same, proceed with the installation of ondulin. If a difference is found, fix it. This is done quite simply - sawing off excess or installing overlays.

Although this work is done only on the extreme rafter legs, before installation, after the string orienting the lower edge of the lower row of roofing materials is stretched, you should carefully examine the roof slope and make sure that the lower ends of the remaining rafter legs are not located below the string.

If the ends of the rafter legs are found lowered below, it is necessary to shorten them to the level of the string. Neglecting this rule will lead to the fact that the installation of wind boards and filing of cornices will be difficult, and they themselves will turn out to be uneven.

How to properly mount ondulin on a hip roof

Installation of the batten (and, if necessary, counter battens) under the ondulin on the hip roof is fundamentally nothing from mounting the batten on the slopes gable roof is not different.

There are 3 things to pay attention to:

1. The slope of the trapezoidal and triangular slopes may be different. Therefore, the step of the crate on different slopes should be chosen in accordance with the slope.

2. Since the lathing on neighboring slopes may have a different pitch, special attention should be paid to the places of their junctions and the installation of reinforcement for the ridge, valley and spike.

3. In order to protect your home from harmful effects as much as possible external factors roofing films Ondutis should be used.

Beginning of installation of Ondulin roofing sheets on slopes hip roof slightly different from the beginning of the installation of roofing materials on a gable roof.

Trapezoidal slopes are the first to hide.

The ondulin sheet, which is mounted first in the bottom row, is laid on the roof in such a way that its lowest point (closest to the edge of the corner rafter) is located 10 - 20 mm from the bottom point of the slope. After that, marking is made, the part of the ondulin sheet protruding above the edge of the slope is cut off, and the sheet is nailed to the crate with branded nails.

It is impossible not to pay attention to the fact that ondulin can be cut with a hacksaw or a knife, and the weight of an ondulin sheet is only 6 kg, which allows you to perform all the described work without lowering Ondulin roofing materials to the ground and without using electricity. This is serious competitive advantage in front of slate, metal tiles and profiled sheets, as it reduces the time of work and (if the work is done by hired roofers) its cost.

Laying the bottom row of ondulin sheets is carried out in accordance with the installation instructions. The last sheet of the row is laid in the same way as the first (with preliminary marking and trimming).

The installation of the second and subsequent rows is carried out in the same way as the installation of the bottom row - the last sheet is marked and cut in place, the remaining sheets are attached in the traditional way, the last sheet is marked and cut in place. It is obligatory to shift each next row relative to the previous one by about half a sheet.

“Why about? The Ondulin company requires shifting exactly half a sheet! - you ask.

The fact is that a situation may arise in which the first sheet of the row will be small size(for example, 1 wave wide). It is not possible to fix such a piece securely, which increases the appearance of leaks. In this case, it is rational to shift the entire row by 1-2 waves and nail a cut off sheet of ondulin of a decent size. The main thing is not to join 4 sheets in one place at once.

A similar situation may arise when mounting the last sheet of a row. In this case, the overlap should be increased by 1-2 waves, which will increase the size of the last sheet.

After laying on trapezoidal slopes, ondulin is mounted on triangular slopes.

Particular attention should be paid to the installation of the ridge element. Previously, we have already described how to properly mount the ridge on a hip roof. We recommend that you strictly follow the installation instructions when performing work.

The installation of ondulin at the exit points of pipes requires no less attention - it is necessary not only to properly mount ondulin sheets, but also to reliably isolate the junction points. Poor performance of these works will lead to the rapid appearance of leaks, which means that roof repairs will be required.

Features of mounting ondulin on a hip roof

Houses with hip roofs on which ondulin lies look attractive. However, in order for the roof on such a roof to be not only attractive, but also reliable, certain rules must be observed during its installation.

Laying ondulin

In order for the roof to be able to withstand all operational loads, the installation of this material must be carried out according to a certain technology recommended by the manufacturer:

Laying is carried out taking into account the direction of the winds

Ondulin sheets are overlapped

The size of the overlap depends on the angle of the slope

Ondulin is fastened with special nails with lockable caps

Laying ondulin on the roof ridge

Covering the roof with ondulin yourself

IN modern world every year there are more and more new types of roofing materials, but at the same time, the long-known types of flooring are not inferior in popularity. Particularly appreciated among users are coatings with high strength, long service life and simple installation process. Roofing ondulin, that is, sheets of cellulose impregnated with a bituminous mixture, can be attributed to such products. Of course, this is a fairly general idea of this material, since it contains many components and additives that make the product durable, resistant to aggressive environments and durable. Today it is not difficult to cover the roof with ondulin, even without involving professional builders in the process. However, before deciding on such a procedure, it is worth carefully studying all the subtleties of the work, as well as the properties and features of the material. In order to properly cover the roof with ondulin, first of all, it is necessary to familiarize yourself in detail with the composition of the product.

Characteristics of ondulin

More than 70 years ago, at one of the Parisian factories, it was decided to release a new product based on cardboard and bitumen. This product was ondulin flooring, which was appreciated by consumers from all over the world, because it is this material that, at its low cost, has quite high reliability. Manufacturers give a guarantee for ondulin roofing for up to 15 years, however, in practice, you can make sure that such flooring can last a much longer period, up to 50 years. What makes it possible to achieve such an effective result? Many users know that covering the roof with ondulin means providing reliable shelter from negative environmental factors, as well as giving the house an aesthetic look. appearance. Let's analyze the composition of the material in more detail. The main components can be considered the following ingredients:

  • refined bitumen;
  • cellulose fibers obtained from cardboard production waste;
  • fiberglass;
  • mineral fillers;
  • various resin impregnations.

However, a quality product can only be obtained if a certain manufacturing process is observed.

Ondulin production technology

For getting quality material, which allows you to competently cover the roof with ondulin, the raw materials must be subject to preliminary control. First of all, all garbage is removed from the waste paper, then the cleaned paper is processed into pulp. Next, the paper pulp goes through a drying stage on a special conveyor, where the mass is shaped into corrugated sheets. At the next stage, the canvas is cut into segments of the same length and impregnated with a bituminous mixture. This process is accompanied by an increase in temperature and high pressure, thanks to which the sheets are impregnated evenly and with the highest quality. To increase the tensile strength of ondulin, as well as to give products greater elasticity, resins, fiberglass and mineral fillers can be added to the composition. Sheets are painted in total mass, before impregnation with bitumen, thanks to this saturated color preserved for many years. And this is not all the positive aspects of the material.

Advantages of ondulin coating

First of all, it is worth noting that the sheets are produced on the basis of only natural ingredients, which means that one of the advantages of ondulin is its environmental safety. You can also name such positive aspects of using the coating:

  • minimal water absorption, due to which moisture does not get into the subroofing layer;
  • frost resistance of products;
  • resistance to weather factors, that is, the flooring is not terrible snow storms or heavy rains, the coating also endures hail, strong wind and UV radiation;
  • antibacterial, this quality helps prevent the development of fungi, mold, bacteria and other microorganisms on the roof surface;
  • resistance to chemical components (acids, alkalis, gases);
  • ease of installation - to cover the roof with ondulin, you can use the tools of a home master;
  • ease of care;
  • affordable cost;
  • short specific gravity, which allows not to exert significant pressure on the material bearing walls buildings.

Also, do not forget that this product has a long service life. Ondulin has a wide selection of colors, but mostly matte colors - red, green, black, brown and their shades.

Physical and mechanical properties

The main characteristics of the ondulin material are presented in the table.

Wave height - 36 mm;

Many compare ondulin with slate. However, the main difference between an ondulin roof and slate is that this material does not contain asbestos. Yes, and working with ondulin is much easier, because it does not crumble and does not break even when nails are driven into it. In addition, it is a fairly economical material with an affordable cost. However, it is definitely not possible to answer the question of how much it costs to cover the roof with ondulin. After all, you need to know the size of the roof, as well as what technology was chosen as the main one. But it is not at all difficult to calculate the approximate cost, it is enough to know the cost of one sheet and the parameters of the roof. Experts recommend adding 5-10% to the final figure.

1. The device of the crate for ondulin. In the instructions for the material, in order to cover the roof with ondulin, it is recommended to arrange a continuous crate. This allows you to fix the products as firmly as possible and preserve their appearance for many years, preventing subsidence during heavy snowfalls. In addition, only in this way it will be possible to move on the roof without problems in the future. The crate can be made of 60x40 mm timber, OSB-boards or plywood. The specific step will depend on the angle of the roof:

2. Cutting ondulin. To cover the roof with ondulin, it is necessary to properly prepare the material. Since the sheets have a wavy profile, marking the first time can be problematic. To cut off the ondulin of the required size, it is enough to use a pencil, a long ruler or other ondulin sheet and a grinder. Also, the size can be done with a hacksaw for wood, it is enough just to apply lubricant to the blade, which will help to avoid jamming the saw.

3. Fastening ondulin. You can fix the sheets with the help of roofing nails for ondulin supplied in the kit. Such products are equipped with a special decorative cap to match the sheets and a rubber lining that prevents damage to the ondulin. However, it is possible to properly cover the roof with ondulin using ordinary self-tapping screws. The sheets are not very heavy, so they can be carried without the involvement of equipment. Installation begins from the lower edge of the crate, for this the sheet is aligned on the roof and pierced with nails along each wave. The consumption of screws or special nails is approximately 20 pieces per sheet. Then the second sheet is overlapped on the first sheet and also fixed. Thus, the entire row is passed, after which you can proceed to fixing the second and subsequent rows with layering on the previous ones by at least 20 cm.

Important! One of the drawbacks of the material is its combustibility. Therefore, solving the question of how to cover the roof with ondulin near chimneys it is worth taking care of the installation of additional layers of hydro and thermal insulation, as well as using a special element (apron) made of rubber.

The easiest way is to cover the roof with ondulin with your own hands if the house has a gable roof. The situation is more complicated in the case of a hip roof, in other words, structures with four slopes ( hipped roof). The first step is to measure the rafter system and make sure that the sides of the triangles and trapezoids are of equal length on both sides. If one of the sides is larger, then you must either saw off from this side structural element, or, conversely, add the appropriate length to the opposite. In addition, during the installation of the crate, the angle of inclination should be taken into account, since trapezoidal and triangular slopes have a different angle, the pitch of the crate will also change. In general, such a roof covering with ondulin practically does not differ from a gable roof device. That is, it is advisable to adhere to the following rules:

  • installation is required only at a temperature range of -5 to +30 degrees on a calm day;
  • the sheet is fixed in its natural state, it does not need to be stretched or squeezed;
  • overhangs should not be too small (leads to precipitation in the under-roof space) or large (the sheet deforms over time and spoils the aesthetics of the roof).

Ondulin roofing is distinguished by many positive qualities, it is durable, attractive in appearance, and besides, it has an affordable cost. Of course, its main indisputable advantage is that you can even cover the roof with ondulin on your own.

How to cover the roof with ondulin with your own hands: the right technology

Do-it-yourself roof covering with ondulin. Production technology and material characteristics. Advantages and properties of ondulin.

How easy is it to cover the roof with ondulin with your own hands?

Roofing is the last step in building your own home before you start. interior decoration and connection of communications. To reduce the time for roofing work, you can install ondulin with your own hands. Ondulin is a modern bitumen-based coating, the laying technology of which allows you to mount the material both on a new roof and on an old one without disassembling the structure. It is suitable for roofing of any complexity, area and slope, therefore it is considered universal option used in private and industrial low-rise construction. In this article, we will tell you how to properly cover the roof with ondulin in order to get a durable, airtight coating that can withstand winter frosts and summer rains.

Material characteristic

Ondulin is an inexpensive, technological roofing material that was invented in the post-war period in France for the quick repair or reconstruction of shell-damaged, dilapidated roofs from traditional ceramic tiles, slate, metal. The production technology of this coating consists in obtaining purified cellulose fibers, making sheets with a wavy surface from them, dyeing and impregnating them with petroleum bitumen. Covering the roof with ondulin makes the structure waterproof, resistant to temperature changes, shockproof, but at the same time light. Installation of ondulin due to the low weight of each sheet can be performed on the old roofing material without dismantling the structure. This material has the following advantages:

  1. A light weight. Each leaf of ondulin standard size weighs only 6 kg, so the device of blood from this material does not require the establishment of a massive frame or strengthening of the foundation.
  2. Ease of installation. Do-it-yourself ondulin roofing is done in 1-2 days without the involvement of hired workers, since such a coating can be installed without special tools and experience.
  3. Flexibility. Sheets of this bitumen-based material have a certain flexibility, which simplifies the installation of ondulin on roofs of complex shape, which include valleys, slopes, ribs and dormer windows.
  4. Affordable price. The installation of an ondulin roof does not require large expenses from the homeowner due to saving the lumber used to build the frame and doing the installation on their own.

Important! Since ondulin was still conceived as a repair material, it has a service life of 15-20 years and is relatively small. colors. It comes in just 4 colors: red, black, brown and green. Before covering the roof with ondulin, it must be taken into account that this material fades in the sun due to the destruction of the pigment by ultraviolet rays.

Roof device

Before you cover the roof with ondulin, you need to understand the composition of the roofing cake, which is made for this type of roofing material. The construction of a roof with molded cellulose impregnated with bitumen is not difficult due to its light weight. It consists of the following elements:

  • Rafter frame. The roofing material is fastened to rafters made of natural wood with a section of 50xx150 mm, the step between which is 50-80 cm. Since the material is light in weight, the frame is usually not weighted with additional elements.
  • Insulation. Before laying ondulin, thermal insulation material is laid between the rafters. The most commonly used mineral-type heaters (basalt wool, glass wool, slag wool).
  • Vapor barrier. The insulation laying technology involves the use of a vapor barrier membrane, which protects the thermal insulation material from below from the penetration of steam and getting wet.
  • Waterproofing. To protect the wooden frame elements and insulation from possible leaks or condensation, a waterproofing film is laid. The waterproofing is fastened to the rafter legs using a construction stapler.
  • Control grid. Before laying the ondulin, counter-lattices are nailed over the waterproofing along the rafters, which organize the ventilation gap necessary for air circulation inside the structure.
  • Crate. The type of crate specifies step-by-step instruction for installation. Ondulin must be nailed to a continuous crate made of moisture-resistant plywood or a lattice of unedged boards laid in 10-15 cm increments so that the roofing material does not deform during operation.
  • Ondulin. Roofing material must be nailed directly to the crate with special nails, overlapping the sheets on top of each other by 10-15 cm.

Please note that before covering the roof with ondulin, most professional craftsmen treat the wooden frame elements with antiseptic impregnations and fire-retardant compounds to protect them from fire and decay.

Necessary materials and tools

Many inexperienced craftsmen are wondering how to properly cover the roof with ondulin, and what is needed for this. The fastening of this roofing material is carried out without the use of special tools or expensive equipment, so installation is often done by hand. For the construction of a roof from ondulin use:

  1. Ondulin sheets 0.95x2.05 m in size, necessary to cover the entire roof area with a margin of 10-15% for cutting and overlapping.
  2. Ridge profile for the entire length of the ridge, taking into account overlaps between elements of 10-25 cm.
  3. Fasteners. Special nails for ondulin with a rubber head are made of carbon steel and painted to match the material.
  4. A bar with a section of 40x40 mm or 60x40 mm for the construction of a crate, treated with an antiseptic.
  5. Waterproofing membrane or film.
  6. Sharp hacksaw for cutting sheets.
  7. Lightweight nail hammer.
  8. Screwdriver for fixing the crate.
  9. Ruler, tape measure and construction pencil for measuring and marking.

Note! Before you cover the roof with ondulin with your own hands, you need to arrange scaffolding around the house or a high ladder that allows you to get to every corner of the slope.

Mounting technology

Even without knowing how to fix ondulin, an inexperienced master can easily cope with this task alone, since sheets of material are easily processed. However, do not forget that the reliability and service life of the roof depends on the quality of installation. For ondulin flooring, the following step-by-step instructions are used:

  • First of all, you need to put and fix a waterproofing film on the finished rafters. To do this, it is rolled out, cut into strips of the required length, which are mounted along the slope perpendicular to the rafter legs with an overlap of 10-15 cm. The film is fixed with a construction stapler to the rafters, and the joints are glued with adhesive tape.
  • On top of the waterproofing material along the rafter legs, the slats of the counter-lattice are nailed. To do this, use long nails or screws.
  • A crate of bars 4x4 cm, 5x5 cm in increments of 10 cm or solid - from sheets of moisture-resistant plywood is nailed over the crate.
  • Next, start laying ondulin. Sheets of material must be laid with an overlap of 10-15 cm, starting from the bottom edge of the slope. The rows are mounted with an offset of half the sheet, observing a vertical overlap of 15-20 cm.
  • Sheets are nailed with special nails with wide rubber heads to the crate. It takes about 20 fasteners to fix each sheet.

Not knowing how to lay ondulin correctly, inexperienced craftsmen make mistakes when installing the roof. The main thing is to lay this material in dry, but not hot weather, since elevated temperatures lead to deformation of the sheets. It is forbidden to stand on the ondulin during installation, as it may break or change shape.
