Some owners of private houses refer to sawdust insulation as a temporary measure that allows them not to be too puzzled by the state of the material. The low cost of this insulation allows you to simply change it after a certain period of time. However, this possibility is not always available. For example, if the ceiling plate is insulated and access to the material from the attic is open, then the procedure for replacing the heat insulator is simple and does not take much time.

There are several options for preparing material from cement and sawdust.

There is another option. Sawdust, water and cement are used in a ratio of 20:3:2. Sawdust must be prepared (soaked with an antiseptic and dried). The mixture is mixed and placed on a polyethylene substrate or a layer of sand backfill, leveled and compacted. 5 - 10 cm thick is enough. The application of the material is carried out by filling the gaps between the planks of the lathing (on vertical surfaces) or between the cross members of the ceilings. Important! Copper sulphate is not added to the ceiling insulation mixture in the bath, because when heated, the substance emits toxic fumes.

The prepared insulation is placed in the gaps between the beams with a layer of up to 25 cm. The material is rammed, otherwise after drying it will shrink due to significant porosity.

A mixture of sawdust with clay and lime

To prepare this mixture, use the following number of ingredients:

  • 7-14 parts of water;
  • 1 part lime;
  • 5 parts clay;
  • 10 parts dry wood shavings.

Cooking sequence:

  1. Wait a month for the mixture to dry completely. Then pour a layer of lime on top or lay a vapor barrier layer. Lay the rough flooring from the boards.

Warming methods

All stages of work on the use of sawdust as a heater can be done by hand. There are several ways to use natural insulation:

  • dry;
  • with the addition of clay;
  • based on cement binder.

The essence of this method is to cover the entire surface of the attic base with wood waste. For this type of insulation, well-dried material is used. Determine the approximate degree of humidity source material possible by the "lumping" method. Dry sawdust, being squeezed in the palms, easily crumbles, makes a crisp, creaky sound. Wet material under the influence of mechanical load sticks together into a lump.

Stages of work:

  1. Possible gaps between the ceiling boards are filled with mounting foam or the entire surface is covered with thick cardboard. The latter can be fixed with a furniture stapler. You can use a more durable material that is also a product of wood waste processing, such as fiberboard (fibreboard) or chipboard (chipboard).
  2. A large fraction of sawdust is poured, including small chips. The thickness of the coating is about 10 cm. The material is evenly distributed over the entire surface and compacted, for example, with feet or a wooden pusher.
  3. This is followed by approximately the same layer of fine sawdust, which is also subjected to compaction.
  4. When using the room as an attic, it is necessary to cover the insulation layer with a vapor-permeable film. Polyethylene and other similar materials cannot be used, otherwise, sawdust diaper rash may occur, followed by decay.
  5. An overlap is arranged, for example, from boards, plywood, chipboard.

In composition with clay

Such a composition is used to insulate the ceiling located above a damp room, for example, a laundry room, a bathroom or a bathhouse.

Subsequence:

  1. Clay is kneaded with sawdust. The procedure is carried out on a fenced area or in a large container - suitable old bath or metal barrel, cut along. Ratio: for 8-10 volume parts of sawdust, 1-2 parts of clay are taken. The mixture is wetted and thoroughly mixed until a uniform color is obtained.
  2. A moisture-proof material is mounted on the surface to be insulated, which will prevent the viscous wet mass from entering through the cracks into the lower room.
  3. The resulting solution of sawdust with clay is evenly distributed over the surface, compacted. The thickness of the layer should not be less than 10-15 cm, otherwise, the plate will not have the necessary strength.

With cement

Instead of clay, low-grade cement, such as slag cement, can be used as a binder. Fluffy lime can be added to deoxidize the solution. Approximate composition ratio: 10 parts of sawdust, 1 part of cement, 1 part of lime. The mixture is mixed with water. The degree of humidity of the solution is a “semi-dry” state. Readiness is determined manually - something resembling a bun is molded. With sufficient moisture, a stable product is obtained that does not spontaneously crumble into small pieces.

The types of work are about the same as with the use of clay compositions. But the thickness, due to the higher thermal conductivity, it is advisable to increase to 15-20 cm. The period of complete drying of the insulating pillow will be 2-3 weeks.

Note! Laying in two layers, with a reinforcing mesh between them, will create a solid and warm base on which you can safely place heavy furniture. That is, turn the attic into a living space like an attic.

Tip 1. The method of insulation using sawdust with cement can be used when working on the thermal insulation of glazed terraces, balconies or loggias, that is, where the strength properties of the base are required.
