Everyone who has encountered cutting firewood is probably convinced that doing this work “on the knee” is very inconvenient and time consuming. Our great-grandfathers left a legacy convenient fixture, called "goats" with an accent on the first syllable.

In the west, this simple sawmill is also well known, but it was called the "horse" there.

In order to make goats yourself, you need to think over their design in advance and make a sketch or drawing. In this case, assembly will go faster and will not require error correction during operation.

In addition to the usual variant of wooden beam, today you can find very interesting collapsible structures of metal goats, which are specially adapted to work with an electric or chainsaw.

Ergonomics lesson

It is not difficult to make goats for firewood with your own hands so that they are light, stable and easy to use. To do this, you need to accurately select the dimensions of this design for your height, as well as take into account the type of tool used for sawing.

In order for the sawing process to take a minimum of time, the firewood must be at a height that does not require a person to squat or a large inclination of the body. It is best when the working cutting height is between 90 cm and 110 cm. At this level, you can cut firewood quickly and comfortably without bending your back.

Sawing firewood with a two-handed saw requires a rest for the free hand. In such a machine, it is a cut wood installed in goats. When using a chainsaw, a stop is not needed, since both hands hold the tool. Here it is much more important to make such a design that would allow one end of the wood (log) to be pushed out of the machine as much as possible. In this case, there will be no risk of chainsaw clipping, inevitable when cutting firewood between the racks of the goat.

Goats for sawing firewood with a two-handed saw must meet two main requirements: stability and strength. The fact is that the manual cutting process is accompanied by alternating shear forces that loosen the machine and can cause it to tip over. Therefore, X-shaped racks, fastened together by a longitudinal beam or a metal puff, must be made of high-quality wood with a thickness of at least 100 mm.

The width of the lower supporting part of the uprights should be slightly larger (by 10-15 cm) from the distance from the ground to the top of the tie bar. In addition to the longitudinal screed connecting the support crosses, the legs of the wooden machine should be strengthened with a strapping bar to increase the rigidity of the entire structure.

Sawing firewood can also be performed on metal goats. Compared to wood, they are less bulky and will last for decades. For their manufacture, you need a corner or profile pipe with side dimensions of at least 50 mm. If mobility is important to you, then the crosses and the fastening of the longitudinal profile to them should be done not by welding, but by bolted connections.

If there is no time and desire to manufacture a machine, and there is a mountain of unsawn firewood in the yard, buy a finished structure. The price of collapsible metal machines for sawing firewood is in the range from 1800 to 5500 rubles, and their model range is very wide and varied.

When choosing, pay attention to the stability of the frame and the quality of the profile. If the machine staggers easily from hand action and its developers saved on every gram of metal, look for a more reliable option.

Chainsaw loves the "loose end"

Low prices and a large selection of chainsaws have made this tool the main one for sawing firewood, so today craftsmen are developing their own original goat designs for it. The productivity and ease of cutting wood with gasoline and electric tools is ten times higher than traditional mechanical sawing.

Goats for sawing firewood with a mechanized tool can be made according to the classical scheme - two symmetrical X-shaped racks with a crossbar. However, in this case, there is a high chance that the chain saw will be caught when the cut is completed. This moment cannot be called pleasant and safe when working with a high-speed saw.

To avoid jamming, the log has to be turned down each time with a cut and only then the sawing is completed. It is much more convenient and safer, especially for a novice lumberjack, to cut the free end of the log protruding outward from the goat.

Therefore, preference should be given to metal structures that allow the log to be pulled out as much as possible in one direction, reliably clamping its other end with the help of toothed grips or a steel chain.

We make goats for firewood with our own hands

Consider the simplest version of the design, which can be done by any man who knows how to hold a jigsaw and a screwdriver in his hands.

First, cut a wooden block according to the dimensions of the drawing. For racks and transverse tightening, you will need a bar measuring 100x100 mm or 50x100 mm, and for tying the legs, a section of 50x50 mm is enough.

Let's start collecting homemade goats from the racks. To do this, in the bars of the cross at the place of their connection, we cut out grooves for a tighter rallying, after which we put the racks on top of each other and fix them with three long self-tapping screws (75 mm).

We also make two small cutouts in the tie bar and tightly stuff it onto the assembled racks. We fix the lower part of the legs of our machine on self-tapping screws with strapping bars.

The metal structure is made in the same way, with the exception of cutting grooves in the profile for a tight connection of the frame elements. In this case, a wooden block can be fixed on the longitudinal corner or pipe that fastens the racks to protect the saw teeth from contact with the metal.

Do-it-yourself goats for sawing firewood? Easily! Good owners take care in advance that they have enough firewood in reserve for the winter. To harvest them, you must have an indispensable tool for all owners of private houses - goats for sawing firewood.

This is enough simple design, which should be in everyone's dacha, so that it is convenient to process, harvest firewood and cut metal planks or wooden boards with an accuracy of millimeters.

Making goats with your own hands is quite simple, and even someone who does not have any special skills can handle it.

Kinds

To make a classic version of such sawing equipment, you will need any of the materials:

Despite the fact that the design itself is simple, sawing goats can be classified as machine tools. For this reason, during the manufacture, some conventions should be observed, one of which is the presence of a drawing or plan according to which the collection will be made. When planning, it is worth signing all dimensions, the same applies to even the smallest details.

It is also important to choose the right angle of inclination of the supports, as this will increase the level of convenience when sawing wood with a chainsaw. Subject to all the nuances, you will get a comfortable and strong design in every sense. So, the goats for sawing firewood will be mobile, which means that you can carry them and use them in any convenient place.

Criterias of choice

The main thing to pay attention to when assembling is the dimensions. This will be affected by:

All the time spent on work will depend on what sizes will be chosen. The best option- make a machine with a height of 0.9 to 1.1 m. So, the person who will work will not bend his back too much, and his arms will be horizontal. It will be easy to work, and the load on the back will be reduced.

Features of using tools when working on goats

If you plan to process wood with a conventional two-handed saw, then you will definitely need a reliable support for the second one. For this reason, when planning, take care of the presence of such elements. Available option- creating an emphasis from wood, which will give you the advantage of installing a support anywhere. When using a power tool like a chainsaw, make sure the goat has a solid surface.

Note, that this feature should be considered at the planning stage, as this will help make the design suitable for a particular instrument.

Goats for sawing firewood with a chainsaw have their own characteristics, as there are differences in the operating rules that affect the safety of the worker. In this case, you will need to take care in advance of a place for free hanging of the material to be sawn. This way you can avoid clamping the tool with the blade being cut.

Make goats

We make goats for work with a hand saw

Since they usually use ordinary hand saws for sawing small-sized firewood, goats can be made in their own standard size. When using them, the owner will make a machine that is convenient and light in size, which at the same time will be strong enough.

This will require the following material:

  1. , whose dimensions are 10 * 10 cm in section. This will be enough for sawing firewood on medium-sized goats. The beam should be 1-1.3 m long.
  2. The goat's legs can be made smaller in section. It is enough for you to take a bar 5 * 5 cm and 1 m long. There should be 4 legs.
  3. It will also be important to install the “horns”, here you can take the same beam, but it should be 37 cm long. Two bars will be required for assembly.
  4. Sometimes reinforcement under the legs of the structure may also be required. To do this, use a timber with a section of 1 inch. Ideally, you need to use 4 such supports, but you can get by with two.
  5. In the role of fasteners, simple self-tapping wood screws are best suited, the width of which will be 4.5 cm and a length of 10 cm. In order for the reinforcement to be reliable, it will take from 30 to 40 pieces.
  6. To protect the timber from rotting, you will need to cover the finished structure with varnish or protective paint. You will also need to buy stain for additional processing.

This list is relevant if you want to make the entire structure with your own hands from scratch. But those who have owned the land for a long time probably have other materials that can replace some of the items on the list.

To get started installation work you will need the following tools:

  • To cut and level, you will need a regular hacksaw for wood.
  • In order for a do-it-yourself machine to be even and not stagger during use, you should use a building corner.
  • To mark the material, a simple pencil is enough for you.
  • It is best to screw in the screws with a Phillips screwdriver or a screwdriver.
  • When fixing the "horns" you will need a hammer to drive nails.
  • Roulette for measurements, will be required at the measurement stage.
  • Chisel.
  • To cover the finished structure with a protective layer, you will need / paint and a paint brush with a pile width of 4-5 cm.

After you have collected all desired material to create a goat for sawing firewood, you can proceed to the assembly. It is best to start work with the processing of timber. We mark the cuts on it, there should be 6 of them on each side. The total number of slots for attaching legs and horns is 12.

Each of them should have a depth of about 3 cm, this will be enough for secure fastening. When sawing, make sure that the grooves are 3 mm smaller than the legs - this will allow you to quickly fix the bars. After the main part of the work is done, you can proceed to the installation of fasteners. The components will be well fixed with self-tapping screws.

Next, you should install an amplifier for fastenings, which will provide not only stability and strength, but also make the work place reliable, and also eliminate the possibility of divergence of the legs. To install, you need to saw off the lower part so that you can install additional fasteners. When the assembly is completed, you can proceed to applying a layer of protection in the form of a stain. When the goats are dry, they can be used.

We make goats for work with two-handed tools

Using a conventional sawhorse for a two-handed saw or similar tool may lead to unsafe situations, such as the machine tipping over. This may be due to loosening during alternate shearing when sawing. For this reason, you should take care of the safety and installation of a solid structure.

Important , that this project has an X-shape, and the material must be strong and thick (at least 10 cm thick in section). In addition, there should be a metal puff on the bars.

Since it is already more difficult to make such goats for sawing firewood with your own hands due to the special requirements for stability, the width of the lower support of the uprights should be much larger than the top tire. A good strength indicator can be achieved by additionally tying the crosses for support with a wooden screed.

For this it will be enough to take a simple board small length. When you follow all the above tips, you can make a strong wood sawing machine with your own hands. Dimensions and proportions can be left unchanged.

Mobile goats made of wood

By design, ordinary goats are quite large and bulky, which complicates transportation. But with your own hands, you can make a lightweight version, which will be in the form of a folding machine and will be easy to carry. Typically, the manufacture of such structures requires serious costs and more time for assembly.

Folding structures will require the following materials:

In order to avoid unnecessary costs and reduce the likelihood of breakage in the manufacture of a sawing goat, an assembly process was thought out, which in itself is very simple. We start with bars. You can also make them with your own hands from boards of 5 cm. When everything is ready, you need to put marks on the places of the cut, where the legs will be installed in the future. After everything has been drilled, it is required to run the base into the bar under the pipe, and put the legs in place. Next, we make a limiter for the racks, which will prevent the legs from moving apart.

It is important to be extremely careful here and choose the same length for both sides, which will allow the goats to open from 360 to 450 degrees. So, you will get a design that will be easy to assemble and disassemble, and it can be stored in small spaces.

The main advantage of metal sawing machines is high strength, stability and long service life.

Since this device will be made by hand, you will need the following materials and tools:

Before you start assembling, you should have a finished sketch in your hands. After you determine the dimensions, you should prepare the base beams, on which the places for welding the legs and horns should be marked.

Next, we take measurements and cut off the remaining parts. If you want to make a mobile goat, then make the connections collapsible, this is possible using bolts. If you want to do stationary machine, then simple welding is enough constituent parts to each other. And in the final, we attach a wooden beam to the entire length on the longitudinal base - this will help to avoid contact between the saw and the metal.

Conclusion

As you can see, there is nothing complicated about this. The only difficulty that may arise is the lack of one or another tool, but everything is easily fixed if you borrow what you need from your dad / brother / neighbor. Ready-made drawings can be found on the Internet, they will already have dimensions. Evaluate your strengths objectively, and then you will be able to make a device for sawing firewood with your own hands!

The simplest device for sawing firewood - goats, allows you to process cubic meters of wood raw materials, make a neat cut of a board or a metal plank. The classic look of the machine is represented by a simple design. The material for the manufacture of wood sawing equipment is more than available and is chosen at your discretion: wooden beams, thin tree trunks, metal profiles, scrap metal at hand.

How to make goats for sawing firewood according to the rules of ergonomics

Like any machine, a sawing unit requires preparation for its manufacture, thinking about the design, making a sketch or drawing with sizing, indicating small parts, the choice of the angle of inclination of the supports, the height of the horns. A careful approach will save you from subsequent refinement, speed up assembly, and help create the prerequisites for effective work.

Accurately selected dimensions and dimensions of the goats allow you to assemble a light, stable and easy-to-use frame for sawing logs. The overall dimension should take into account the comfortable and convenient use machine:

  • worker growth,
  • type of instrument
  • type of wood being cut.

The height of the log affects the duration of sawing. The optimal height of the crossbar-support for laying raw materials is 90 - 110 cm, the size allows you to work in a free natural position, without bending your back or placing your hand above the horizontal.

The work tool predetermines the mounting of additional elements on the trestle. Working with a two-handed saw requires a hand rest. A simple stop is made from wood inserted into the goats.

The use of a chainsaw for the preparation of chocks requires a strong material for the upper part of the goat and a different design. The technology of working with modern cutting tools requires maximum space for free hanging of one of the ends of the log in order to remove the possibility of clamping the blade.

How to make goats for sawing firewood with a regular saw

We present dimensions And detailed instructions for the manufacture of light, durable and comfortable goats.

For work, prepare the material from the list:

  • For the base. A piece of bar with a section of 100x100 mm. Cut length 1.1+/- 00.5 m.
  • For legs. Segments of bars with a section of 50x50 mm. Quantity - 4 units. Length 1.1 +/-0.05 m.
  • Under the horns. Segments of bars with a section of 50x50 mm. Quantity - 2 units. Length 360 m.
  • For amplifiers under the legs. Segments of a bar of an inch section. Quantity - 2 units. Length 1.3m.
  • 3 dozen self-tapping screws 45x100 mm.
  • A remedy for protection wooden surfaces from rotting, stain.

The proposed list is not mandatory. Materials are selected from the presence in the own household of residues from previous construction works.

To work, you need a set of tools:

  • Construction corner.
  • Soft simple pencil.
  • Wood saw.
  • Ordinary hammer.
  • Chisels.
  • Construction roll.
  • Flat and Phillips screwdrivers.
  • Paint brush 4-5 cm.

Mark the beam for the base for 12 cuts, 6 pieces on each side, 2.5 cm deep. These will be the grooves for the horns and legs. Helpful advice. The cuts are made 2-3 mm narrower than 50 mm, for a dense, tight fit, insertion of 50x50 mm bars.

Cuts are selected with a chisel and a hammer, sawn-to-size bars are inserted into the resulting grooves. Fastening with self-tapping screws.

On the bars of an inch section, places are marked for mounting amplifiers, which ensure the strength of the structure and remove the possibility of legs divergence under load. The end segments are sawn off with a hacksaw, the length is selected flush with the legs. The ends of the legs resting on the ground are sawn off at an angle.

Ready goats are treated with stain. After drying, a simple machine is ready for use.

Making goats for sawing with a two-handed saw

Cutting logs with a two-handed saw causes loosening of the machine due to the alternating shear force and causes the narrow trestle to tip over. X-shaped racks for a sawing unit for a two-handed saw are made of thick, good quality wood with a cross section of 10 cm or more, using a metal puff or a wooden block for screeding. The width of the lower support of the racks is made 10-15 cm larger than the distance from the surface to the top of the tie bar. In the case of connecting the support crosses with a wooden screed, they are additionally strapped with a thin beam, strengthening and giving the structure rigidity and stability.

Dimensions for the manufacture of goats are taken similarly to the dimensions for a simple design, with adjustments for the dimensions for the lower support.

How to make homemade folding goats out of wood

Firewood is harvested seasonally. The used sawing machine in the rest of the period gathers dust, decays and occupies usable space. The model of folding goats will help to resolve the issue of rational warehousing, it will come in handy when conducting field logging.

For the manufacture of the model you will need material:

  • Wooden bars. Quantity - 4 units.
  • Metal pipe 1-1.3 m long. Quantity - 1 unit.
  • Limiter for connecting legs: cable, chain, belt, rope.
  • Drill for wood with a maximum diameter.

Simplicity of design is combined with ease of manufacture. Bars of the same size are taken ready-made or unraveled from a 50 mm board. On each bar, a place is marked for a hole with a diameter of 1-2 mm less than the diameter of the pipe and drilled through with a punch. The pair connection of the bars is performed by a limiter. The length of the limiter is selected according to the opening angle of the goat 350-450.

Proper assembly allows you to fold the bars in one plane and remove the goats until needed.

How to make metal goats for sawing firewood

Metal goats have a longer working life and compact dimensions, unlike classic wooden structures. To make metal goats at home, you will need the following materials and tools:

  • Corner/profile pipe 50x50mm.
  • Wooden beam 50x59mm. Length 5-10 cm.
  • Bulgarian or hacksaw for metal.
  • Construction centimeter or tape measure.
  • Bolts for connecting or welding machine.

According to a sketch drawn up in advance, with affixed and verified dimensions, the base beam is cut off, the places for attaching the legs and stags are outlined. The remaining parts of the structure are cut. The connection option is selected. For a collapsible design, the parts are connected with bolts. For a stationary goat, parts are welded. A piece of timber 50x50 mm is fixed to a longitudinal corner or pipe fastening the racks. This is a precautionary measure and protection of the saw teeth, the contact of the working surface of the teeth with the metal body of the goats is excluded.

The cost of a homemade metal model is high and is comparable to the price of an assembled finished goat model in the construction market for tools and equipment.

The range covers small machines intended for private use, and ends with large, dimensional machines for large-scale production. Price limits from $12 to $500. The choice of model is made according to the expected load on the bed, the length and thickness of the working forest.

European manufacturers offer inexpensive goats for sawing firewood. Many Ukrainian distributors offer to buy the selected model with delivery. For example, the German company MB exhibits models on the Ukrainian market from $11. The difference between high-quality goats for sawing from Germany and similar Chinese specimens is in the composition and strength of the metal, equipment of machine tools with additional elements. A serrated edge is provided to increase grip, reduce slipping and turning of the log during operation, compact aesthetic design, joints and edges treated with an anti-corrosion compound.

How to make your own goats for sawing firewood with a chainsaw

The popularity of using a chainsaw for cutting firewood is associated with the low price of the tool, ease of operation and the speed of performing a large amount of work. In comparison with the traditional method of manual sawing, the productivity of a chainsaw is ten times greater, and the ease of work is several orders of magnitude higher.

Owner modern instrument the original and convenient design of goats is offered. Cutting a log with a chainsaw on a classic X-shaped stand can cause the chain to pinch during cutting. To prevent jamming of the chain saw, the worker has to turn the log over by hand with the cut down to full implementation cut. It is safer to cut the free-protruding end of the line.

For sawing wood with a chainsaw, improved metal goats are used. A gear grip is installed on one of the ends of the machine or welded steel chain. Having extended one end of the log as much as possible, the second is securely clamped in the fixture.

For private sawmills or large farms for the harvesting and processing of waste from scaffolding, slabs, trimmings of boards, slats, beams, the industry produces versatile, convenient sawing goats. The machine makes it possible to stack all the timber intended for processing in a dense pile, fix it special device, eliminating the possibility of sprawl or unexpected ricochet offcuts during the cut. Models start at $80.

The unsightly design of the goat is transformed, if desired, into a modern aesthetic appearance, with the expansion of the basic functionality of the machine. Manufacturing scheme sawing machine remains the same: legs with horns and a connecting body.

  • Changes will affect the material used:
    • Replace the log with a wide board and place it on edge.
    • X-shaped legs are made not from bars, but from the available metal profile.
    • Assemble a typesetting board from narrow boards, cover with a multi-colored antifungal preparation.
    • Attach supports to the base-panel, previously bent from the upper and lower ends of the support. Use bolts with a wing nut as a connector. Choose an arbitrary bending angle, taking into account the possibility of placing a large log in rogulins. Perform the lower step taking into account the stability of the structure.

The versatility of the made goats lies in the extraordinary design and extended functionality of the horns. After assembly, the legs bent at an angle form a vertical crevice, which conveniently accepts a log of any diameter, boards, beams. Sawing a canvas of a complex, inconvenient configuration will become easy and safe.

  • To the previous design of the modernized goat, add intermediate horns. This will allow you to cut short bars, blanks, boards, branches. The collapsible design of the goat allows you to use the machine in utility room and in a limited area, for example, on the roof, in the attic when repairing or installing a new ceiling.
  • In a small room, the unification of the goat can be brought to perfection. When assembling, leave the long upper end of the horns, mark 2/3 of the length and make a bend at 900 to the vertical in a vice.
  • If necessary, a flat plank is laid on the horizontal horns and an impromptu table is obtained. Having provided a method for attaching a plank to curved horns, a mobile surface for attaching a vise, a verstal plane, and a tabletop are obtained. A flat panel for the time of settling a goat is turned into a plane for hanging shelves, drawers for tools.
  • Newcomers to carpentry advice on assembling a goat from bars. The first bar is passed under the cross, and the subsequent ones are used to connect the legs.
  • In order to facilitate unscrewing and protect the bolts from corrosive oxidation, a lubricant is applied to the nut threads before starting work.

Which of the men has never faced the need to saw a tree into logs in order to chop wood later? It is one thing if this is a one-time job, in nature, for a fire, where in unsuitable conditions to wave an ax is good for health.

Another thing is if this task needs to be performed with sufficient regularity. From ancient times, a device called goats was used to saw logs for firewood.

From a technical point of view, there is nothing difficult in it, and making goats for cutting firewood with your own hands is a couple of trifles. But before embarking on the manufacture of this particular goat design, it is worth considering the options.

Goats for manual sawing

It would seem that this simple device can be improved, and what parameters can be changed, except for the height, to make working on it more comfortable? In the old days, wooden logs were usually sawn by 2 people using a two-handed saw with large teeth.

They completely controlled the process and with their free hand held the ends of the log on both sides, and if necessary, they could put pressure on it so that the cut did not pinch the saw blade. And often, when sawing thick logs, they were finished a little more than to the middle and rotated 180 °. True, the cut at the same time was not very even, which created difficulties in installation during subsequent felling.

The distance between the cross-shaped racks of the goat was usually made a little less than twice the length of the furnace furnace, for which firewood was harvested.

And now such designs have not gone into oblivion, although they have been improved by adding a third cross for the convenience of working with a one-handed bow saw and reducing the distance between them to reduce the risk of clamping the saw blade.

In some metal goat structures, cloves appeared to better fix the logs, and their more traditional types were improved by adding sharp adjustable screw stops for the same purpose.

Work has become much more convenient. And, if you have a need for regular harvesting of a not very large amount of firewood, then this option for cutting them may well suit you.

Goats for sawing firewood with chain saws

But still, when we are dealing with large volumes of firewood, then torturing yourself with manual sawing of logs is a wasteful activity, in terms of time and physical costs. Gasoline and electric chain saws speed up the process tenfold and reduce physical labor.

But traditional goats are not suitable for working with them, due to the high risk of injury and tool breakage when clamping the saw bar in the cut. Of course, you can only saw logs that go beyond the dimensions of the goat, but at the same time you cannot achieve a rational cutting of logs. Therefore, to work with such saws, other devices were invented, which, according to tradition, retained the old name, although they bear little resemblance to their grandfathers.

The most simple goats for working with a chainsaw have a similar design.

Heavy stable base and a pair of horns for fixing the log. What else is needed? Sawing occurs beyond the dimensions of the structure, and the log in it is held by the foot. The productivity of work is low, but such goats are quite functional.

For sawing not thick logs, the most suitable, in our opinion, will be goats of a similar design:

Their only drawback is the unsawn logs of the lower row, but for large volumes this design flaw will not be fundamental. And you choose the dimensions of such goats depending on the same length of the firebox of your furnace, the length of the tire and the power of your saw. Their undoubted advantage is their quick disassembly, which makes it possible to simplify and speed up the removal of lumber.

A similar goat design, but with the ability to finish beams of logs to the end, due to the presence of transverse supports that provide a gap between the woodpile and the base of the goat, is shown in this video, but the lack of the ability to quickly disassemble this advantage to a certain extent.

Although you can turn it over to the end side, however, with a little more effort for this.

For thicker logs, a similar design will work, but with them fixed in the sawing container, which will not allow the logs to pinch the saw.

And the size of the chocks obtained in such goats can be minimal.

Not the most successful, as it seems to us, but quite a workable version of the device for sawing not very thick logs is shown in this photo:

The most valuable thing in such a goat design is a stop template that allows you to withstand ideal height chock, which is extremely important for small-sized furnaces.

Other goat options

Most common for sawing single thick logs chain saws, received various goat designs with fixing the back of the log.

It is these, except for cruciform ones, that are most produced industrially.

Their designs are so simple that detailed descriptions do not need, everything can be seen in the photo. Anyone can make such goats for cutting firewood with their own hands. House master, more or less able to hold a tool in his hands. The main thing here is the ability to proportion the dimensions of the support platform to the size and weight of the sawn logs. It may not have a rectangular shape, or even completely replaced by stops. I liked this goat design for its simplicity and minimalism.

Or this option, designed for very thick, but not long logs:

And finally, we will present a very successful for homemade wooden structure, which also guarantees the absence of jamming of the saw due to the small width between the stops of the goat at the cutting point.

In such goats, the log is laid with the same offset on the sides for stability, and sawn in the middle. Then do the same with the resulting pieces.

In all cases, when self-manufacturing goat, you choose the height individually, so that, first of all, it is convenient for you.

Dear readers, if you still have questions, ask them using the form below. We will be glad to communicate with you;)

Sawing a large amount of firewood is a laborious task. Anyone who has done this at least once knows for sure that doing it on the ground or in a semi-hanging position is not very convenient. To be frank, after a few bars, such an activity begins to terribly annoy. Nevertheless, there are goats for sawing firewood that can greatly simplify the task and make the work performed less laborious and faster.

Everything ingenious is simple

The goat itself is a fairly simple design, and even a person who has never done such things can do it. Moreover, there are currently several manufacturing options, each of which is suitable for certain cases. Goats can be made of wood or metal. In the first case, the design is very light, and its strength is limited. At the same time, nothing is needed to create it, except for boards, nails, screws and a few more simple tools. A metal goat is much stronger and more durable, but it takes more effort and resources to make it. In any case, both the first and the second option take place.

Materials and tools

Before proceeding with the work, it is necessary to acquire materials and tools. First, let's look at how to create a wooden goat. To do this, you need a beam with a section of 100x100 and a length of 110 centimeters under the base. For the "horns" and "legs" they take a bar with a section of 50x50, 36 and 110 centimeters long, respectively. It is also desirable to take care of the amplifiers "legs", which will give stability. To do this, you need an inch board. It is advisable to take two, each - 130 cm.

As for the tool, it will need a little, and everyone can find it. To perform the work, you need a hammer, a chisel, and a hacksaw. You will have to buy 25-35 self-tapping screws, unless, of course, you have them. In addition to all this, it is advisable to have a construction corner with a pencil with you, which will allow you to complete the work more accurately. You can not do without a screwdriver, although a screwdriver is preferable.

General provisions

A wooden goat for firewood should be light, comfortable and durable. It is extremely important to understand here that the design must be adjusted to fit your height. But let's take a closer look at this issue and find out how to make goats for sawing firewood with your own hands. A drawing in this case, or at least a sketch, will be what will help you complete all the work more accurately and quickly.

The cutting height in most cases should not exceed 110 centimeters and be less than 90 cm. So a person does not need to squat or tilt the body too much. If you plan to use a two-handed saw, then you need to take care of the rest of your free hand. In this case, an additional cut timber is placed on the machine, which acts as a stop. But if you are going to work with a chainsaw, then the emphasis will be meaningless, due to the employment of both hands. When working with gasoline or power tools, it is much more important to take care of the maximum log outreach from the goat. So the workpiece will not be clamped, which is almost inevitable when sawing between the goat racks.

Do-it-yourself goats for sawing firewood

The assembly of the machine must be carried out from the legs. Although there are many options, this one is considered the most optimal and simple. In the bars of the cross, where the place of the future connection is located, grooves are made for a stronger fit. Further, the racks are superimposed on each other and fastened with self-tapping screws. The tie bar must also have several grooves, in the future it must be properly nailed to the structure. Cuts need to be knocked out with a chisel and a hammer. Do not forget also that the grooves should be a few millimeters narrower than the beam inserted into them. This will create an interference connection that will be strong enough and reliable.

On the inch bars, markings are made, in the places of which there will be amplifiers. They are needed to ensure the stability of the legs. In principle, do-it-yourself goats for sawing firewood are made quite quickly, but it is extremely important to make all connections of high quality, so do not spare self-tapping screws.

For sawing with a two-handed saw

It is worth noting that the design of such a machine will differ, albeit slightly, but all changes are simply necessary. For example, the use of narrow goats is unacceptable here, since a variable force during the execution of work will lead to overturning. It makes sense to make X-shaped racks from a thick and durable timber with a section of 100 mm. In addition, the screed is recommended to be made of metal. This approach will allow you to secure the goats as much as possible so that they do not loosen during work. The drawing of goats for sawing firewood with a two-handed saw implies a broadening of the lower part of the support. It should be 100-150 mm more than the distance from the surface to the top of the timber. If you used a wooden one, otherwise strengthen the structure additionally with a thin beam. Otherwise, the dimensions remain the same, and only the lower part of the support is subject to changes. If the last element is made in the standard version, then emphasis is placed on the free hand.

Goats for sawing firewood with a chainsaw

A chainsaw is a relatively inexpensive, but at the same time, an effective automatic tool for sawing wood. At first there were no goats made specifically for this kind of equipment, but today they are. The classic X-shaped design is bad because there is a high probability of chain jamming during the cut. It is for this reason that goats that allow free protrusion of the wood are very popular. Most often used metal constructions that will improve. Modernization consists in the fact that a toothed clamp is installed on one of the ends, which allows you to tightly fix the workpiece. Currently, there are universal devices on sale that have a high-quality clamp, and also completely eliminate ricochet during work. True, the price of such machines starts at 8,000 rubles. That is why it makes sense to engage in the manufacture of such

Metal goat: features and benefits

The main advantages of metal goats are their resource. This is a more durable and strong product that will surely serve you well. In this case, you will need a metal profile with a section of 50x50 mm, as well as a grinder and bolts or a welding machine. In this case, it is desirable to have a pre-prepared drawing and a sketch with dimensions applied. The base beam is cut to size, the joints are marked and the steel elements of the machine are cut. In this case, you can choose any method of connection: both bolted and welded. The latter option is more durable, but you will have to work harder than in the first case. Currently, metal goats for sawing firewood are found in multiple versions. You can find machines of various heights, widths, strengths, etc.

Conclusion

So we figured out in general terms how to make various goats for sawing firewood. Sizes must be selected depending on your height. In any case, work should be comfortable. You can always ennoble the goats. This is usually achieved by using metal profile instead of a wooden bar for legs, the use of narrow boards instead of a log. That, in principle, is all on this topic. Making machine tools with your own hands is good because practically no financial investments are required. In any case, the costs will be incomparable with the market prices for finished goats. In addition, you will gain precious experience that you can use in the future. But remember that at all stages of creating a structure, you need to ensure its strength and reliability.
