What is outdoor recreation and what does a deck chair mean in this context, there is no need to repeat. But for a person who knows at least a little how to craft, it may be easier to design a deck chair with his own hands than to buy a ready-made one. And it's not just about money. In affordable retail outlets, there may simply not be one in which, well, you really just want to lie down and relax. Yes, there is, of course, online trading. But what will come to you, in terms of ergonomics, may not be at all what it looked like in the picture. In general, furniture and leisure items (not to mention medical ones) should not be bought in absentia. Unless the seller guarantees the return of 100% of the payment without any explanation from the buyer. Okay, write science fiction for science fiction, and for us - closer to the point.

Products similar to those in the photo below will not be considered. For one simple reason - their manufacture requires production conditions. And at home it will hardly cost less than buying ready-made. Even if you are a skilled craftsman and own everything essential tool. But a deck chair made in a day (maximum over a weekend) from improvised materials on a balcony or in a garage can be no less comfortable, look no worse, and will probably cost no more than a third of the price of such a purchase. That's what we're going to do. Including couples and children.

Soft or hard?

The first question to be decided is whether, so to speak, the seating surface of the lounge chair will be hard or soft. On the one hand, this is determined by the purpose and nature of the use of the product; on the other hand, the choice of soft / hard determines the choice of the design of the deck chair. His bed/seat can be either soft cloth or hard typesetting of wooden planks. A soft bed, if done correctly, absorbs well, removes and, like a wick, evaporates grease; a padded lounger is cheaper, easier to make (especially foldable), and takes up less storage space. But - it is unlikely that you will be able to fully relax in a soft deck chair for more than 2-3 hours; why - see below. In general, in terms of the combination of qualities, it is soft - the best deck chair for giving (you still don’t lie there all day long) and as a portable one, for example. for fishing, also see below.

It is more difficult to make a hard deck chair, the materials for it will cost more, and for its storage in the winter you will need a fairly large room. But on the other hand, a hard deck chair can be extremely ergonomic: it is possible to lie on it all day or quickly and have a good rest after hard work. Provided that it is covered with a terry sheet or a cover made of upholstery fabrics for cabinet furniture - flock, microfiber, etc. Otherwise, on a hot day, you will have to get up, tearing your sweaty back off the sticky tree, which is not very pleasant.

Note: hybrid of both, possessing almost all of them positive qualities, but bulky - a deck chair on a tubular frame, see fig. But structurally and ergonomically, this product is closer to hammocks and rocking chairs.

Varieties

A chaise lounge is, roughly speaking, either a trestle bed with an adjustable headrest, or an armchair with an adjustable camber of the seat and back (with one exception, see below). Chaise lounge-trestle bed is performed preim. hard; chaise lounge chair - soft.

The main types of design of deck chairs are shown in the figure:

A simple deck chair-trestle bed (pos. 1) is extremely economical: it may take only 2-3 hours of time and materials for 100-200 rubles to make it. (depending on what you already have at hand), see for example. video:

Video: homemade sun lounger for 100 rubles

For ease of use and transportation, armrests, footboards, shelves, pos. 2. This significantly increases the cost and complicates its manufacture, but does not improve ergonomics at all: you lie down on such an hour and a half, you have to get up - and you groan, your lower back hurts. However, there is a very simple trick that can greatly improve the ergonomics of a simple sun lounger-trestle bed, see below.

The anatomical trestle-bed (pos. 3) allows you to quickly, within half an hour or an hour, recuperate after hard work or take a sunbath all day without becoming ossified. But structurally it is the most complex, material and labor intensive. A chaise longue of an “anatomical type” with a broken rather than a smoothly profiled bed (pos. 4) is not much simpler in design, but in terms of ergonomics it is worse than even a simple straight one; the angular dip under the “fifth point” is especially felt.

Of the soft sun loungers, the most common is universal (garden), pos. 5. In fact, a soft beach chair is universal, pos. 6, but to make it more difficult: it is necessary not only to increase the maximum camber of the back and seat, but also to add steps for its adjustment, see fig. on right.

The fishing deck chair is made almost exclusively soft (pos. 7 in the previous figure), keeping in mind its weight and dimensions and ease of transportation. In a fishing lounger, firstly, the seat depth is less, and the back height is greater. Secondly, their collapse and slopes, especially if the deck chair is homemade, are set for themselves once and for all. The reason - does not peck, does not peck, suddenly - it's gone! And, it seems, the chub (or bream) leads, which must be hooked very skillfully and carefully. And from a garden or beach deck chair, after relaxing, you will not rise quickly, smoothly and silently.

Chaise longue or armchair?

Very ergonomic and at the same time structurally quite simple are the so-called garden chairs. Adirondack type, or simply Adirondack chairs (see the figure on the right); they were invented by the inhabitants of the Adirondacks of North America. You can sit in an Adirondack chair for a day, admiring the landscape (there are worth it, look at least the picture of Rockwell Kent "Adirondack Autumn"), and get out of it fresh, cheerful.

Note: Adirondack garden chair and without a footrest completely replaces a deck chair. On its armrests, vessels with a drink, dishes with a snack are quite conveniently placed. Making an adirondack chair with your own hands is within the power of an amateur master of the middle hand. Therefore, although there are other publications about garden chairs, here we also give drawings of the Adirondack garden chair made of wood:

materials

Next, we will look at how a deck chair is made of wood. Chaise lounges on a metal base are much more labor intensive. The frame (frame) of a deck chair made of ordinary steel in normal conditions its operation quickly corrodes despite any painting, and profiles made of corrosion-resistant metals will cost more than very high-quality wooden blanks, see below. The only exception is a deck chair for fishing (weight and dimensions!); it is better to do it on a frame made of aluminum pipes, see for example. video:

Video: homemade deck chair for fishing

<

But the choice of material for a wooden deck chair is also not easy. And the question immediately arises: solid or re-glued plywood? The first is more solid, but it is more difficult for him to pick up the material. A chaise longue made of re-glued plywood is more laborious, but more technologically advanced, especially in the case of an anatomical chaise longue; material for it will cost less than high-quality wood.

array

Ordinary timber for a sun lounger is of little use - it is not sufficiently resistant to regular alternating loads (after all, houses and sheds are not dragged from place to place, they are not folded and hidden for the winter). In terms of mechanical and chemical resistance, larch would be suitable for a deck chair, but its wood, like that of other conifers, quickly fades and turns gray from solar ultraviolet radiation.

From domestic hardwoods, oak and beech are suitable, provided they are impregnated 2-3 times with a water-polymer emulsion (WPE). The last name is not entirely clear, and the first one is a bit long, so now VPE goes on sale under the name Ecogrunt. This is the same substance, suitable for impregnating everything even a little porous - from concrete to soft wood.

Note: walnut and hornbeam, which are also sufficiently resistant in terms of mechanics, chemistry and light, are unsuitable for outdoor furniture, because easily attacked by pests.

Hevea

There would be no need to talk about tropical species like teak due to their high cost and the fact that in the Russian Federation they are supplied almost exclusively in products. Recently, however, hevea wood has appeared in sufficient quantities on the wood market. This Brazilian tree is known as the best rubber-bearing plant, but Seringero suicide bomber armies are no longer sent to the wilds of the Amazon for "wild" latex. Hevea is grown on plantations in the humid tropics around the world, and when the trees are exhausted from regular cutting, they are cut down and sold as commercial timber; partially - dissolved into ornamental blanks.

Note: why are these rubber miners - seringeros - suicide bombers? Amazonia is a real green hell, teeming with deadly diseases and creatures. Here is an example - during the Second World War, when the demand for natural rubber increased dramatically, only Ford Motor Co. sent 30 thousand Seringero to the Amazonian selva. Of these, according to official American data, 283 people (less than 1%) survived. But, by the way, this hell is the main supplier of oxygen to the Earth's atmosphere. All other tropical forests, together with the taiga, give it almost three times less, and the ocean, as it turned out, consumes almost all of its oxygen itself.

The advantages of hevea as an ornamental tree are undeniable:

There is only one drawback of hevea wood: its trees on plantations are depleted young, at the age of 5-10 years. Therefore, hevea does not enter the market as building long blanks. But for the manufacture of a deck chair, this is not essential.

Note: if you walk through furniture stores, you will find that 10,000 rubles. for a hevea seating chair, it's still not quite expensive. But it immediately turns out that a dining table made from it, from the same set, for which 10-15 times more wood was used, costs 18,000 rubles. Aha! We are looking on the Internet to see if hevea blanks are sold. It turns out - yes, and the prices are reasonable.

Plywood

Here, too, a choice arises: is birch bakelized moisture resistant (aviation)? It is very expensive, does not bend well and often cracks on a bend. Building pine? It fades and turns gray in the light, like any coniferous tree, and is also not very cheap. Packing from "junk" wood (alder, aspen, poplar)? Cheap, bends, figuratively speaking, knit even with bonds. Fragile, unstable to mechanics, chemistry, pests? After some additional processing, quite doable at home (see below), it will be quite suitable for a deck chair. Especially for the anatomical one, in the design of which there are curvilinear details, and the concentrated loads are much smaller in magnitude than in the soft one.

Impregnation and sawing

It is obvious that packaging plywood needs to be impregnated for strength and moisture resistance. It is not difficult to guess that the best impregnation in this case is the same Ecosoil (VPE): cheap, safe (you can work in a living room with children), effective enough for a deck chair. It is impregnated with a plastering brush 2-3 times on each side with an interval of 15-30 minutes and dried for a day (at temperatures above 25 degrees and humidity up to 60%, you can dry overnight).

And here is the first secret - you need to impregnate a whole sheet or part of it, intended for a deck chair. Yes, before sawing into workpieces. Why? Anyone who has ever worked with an electric jigsaw knows how much sawdust it gives and how they scatter + the pungent smell of scorched wood. When sawing, impregnated plywood produces dust and stinks much less. It’s easier with a circular saw, but not everyone has it, it doesn’t make a curved cut, and all the same, the less sawdust, the better.

About the jigsaw

If you are only planning to purchase a jigsaw (which will come in handy in so many cases), then, having taken it in your hands, do not cut it clean right away, practice on scraps and waste. The electric jigsaw is capricious no less than manual. The first cuts can generally go to the sides, then they will go slightly wavy. There is no use from a laser marker - it literally goes astray in the first centimeters of the cut, even if you have a “cool” Bosch or Makita. But, fill your hand under your own, namely your own, tool - and your friends will not believe that this is done by hand, and not on a cutting machine.

plywood

Plywood parts will gain full moisture resistance after complete drying of the impregnation, after 2-3 days. But for the necessary strength, they need to be glued from plywood strips. The best glue, again in this case, is mounting PVA. It is sold in hardware stores under the names "Construction", "Reinforced", "PVA D2". Its important advantage is comparatively, for example. with liquid nails and other nitro-based adhesives - not dried PVA is completely washed off with water. Got on clothes - wash under the tap; on the carpet - wipe several times with a wet swab or walk with a washing vacuum cleaner.

Mounting PVA has a somewhat gelatinous consistency and dries to full strength for a long time, the same 2-3 days. According to the usual technology, the parts to be glued are kept until the glue is tack free (this is approx. 20 minutes), and then for at least a day under pressure. Considering that for gluing, say, beams 24 mm thick, you need 4 strips of plywood 6 mm thick, and the home master does not have a bunch of clamps and weights for weights, then making a deck chair can be delayed until the time when you need to think about insulation, boxes / screens for radiators, etc.

Not just nails

All parts for a plywood deck chair can be re-glued in a day, and the next day the product itself can be assembled, if metal fasteners are used to fasten the glued parts with compression. But the heads of the usual self-tapping screws will either stick out in plain sight, or they will need to be puttied and painted over. Over time, they will rust, but the main thing is that a large number of thick ribbed fasteners will inevitably weaken the parts.

These problems will not arise if you use the so-called. finishing nails. They are also sold in hardware stores, and if they cut off “No!” or look in surprise, explain: “Yes, these are the ones with which platbands are nailed to MDF doors! Nails for platbands!”

"Cash" nails are made of bronze (these are more expensive) or high-quality stainless steel; their heads and necks are shaped somewhat differently than those of conventional construction. Therefore, finishing nails very rarely bend and do not prick the material, even if the hammer is in the hands of a “full kettle”. And one more thing - the finishing nails are anodized in different colors, so you can pick up invisible ones on your material (see fig.). Finishing nails are available in different sizes; the most popular ones are from 12x0.6 to 25x1, which is just right for assembling plywood parts by plywood.

Gluing

Plywood parts from strips are glued using finishing nails. way (see also fig.):

  • Let's say we need a beam 25 mm thick - we prepare 4 strips of plywood 6 mm thick, the missing 1 mm will give layers of glue;
  • We lubricate with glue and put together 3 strips (on the left in the figure), it is not necessary to withstand until tacky;
  • We fasten with finishing nails 15x0.7 (0.8) with a snake in increments of 200-300 mm, but at least 3 attachment points per part. If our beam is up to 600 mm long, only 3 nails will be needed, arranged in the form of a stretched letter Λ, in the center in fig;
  • Similarly, we attach the last strip on the opposite side. We arrange the attachment points in a mirror image of the original, i.e. nail heads form a stretched V;
  • With a wet swab, remove the squeezed out residues of glue;
  • We set aside the assembled blank of the part to dry and make the next one.

Note: the workpiece assembled in this way is, in principle, suitable for final processing immediately, only wet glue stains the tool.

What if it's crooked?
Bent glued parts made of plywood are also assembled in a similar way, but it is impossible to overdry them after impregnation: within 1-2 days, the VPE-impregnated plywood remains quite plastic, but then it becomes more rigid and brittle than “raw”. The technology for manufacturing bent parts of the deck chair flooring depends on how this very flooring is assembled: transverse frame or longitudinal in place, see below. Longitudinal flooring is quickly assembled directly on the finished frame of the product; transverse on the frame is much more laborious.

The strips of longitudinal flooring are nailed one after the other directly to the load-bearing beams of the frame with the same finishing nails. The finished product is dried for a day, sanded, varnished or painted - and you're done. To assemble the parts (lamellas) of the transverse flooring, you need to prepare a plaz - a flat wooden shield of a suitable size. Then:

  1. On the plaza, the contours (profiles) of the flooring lamellas are beaten off. Because lamellas cannot be removed from the plaza until the glue is completely dry; the plaza needs to be large enough;
  2. The plaza is covered with a transparent PE film;
  3. Along the lines of the profiles of the lamellas, wooden blocks are nailed - rats (this is a technical term). Rats are placed on one side of the profile line in those places where the frame support beams will be under the lamellas. The height of the rat is equal to the width of the lamella; thickness - the thickness of the beam.
  4. The first strip of plywood is simply nailed to the rats with finishing nails;
  5. Subsequent strips are smeared with glue before attaching;
  6. After 2-3 days (in this case, you need to wait for the glue to cure at least 85%), the blanks, together with the rats, are torn off from the plaza;
  7. The rats are knocked down or (better) carefully torn off with a sharp nail puller;
  8. The oblique / bent ends of the nails are cut off, the straight ones are used to attach the lamellas to the beams.

Making a soft deck chair

The easiest thing to do for a summer residence, fishing and, possibly, a free beach nearby is a soft deck chair. Its cloth bed is sewn from tarpaulin or other durable cotton fabric. Linen canvas is of little use - it is resistant, but rather rough, but at the same time slippery, which can result in scuffs on the body. Furniture flock and microfiber are perfect, but quite expensive.

Typical dimensions of a universal (see above) soft chaise longue are given in the figure:

But in the design shown there, there is a zest: no need for locksmith work and simplified carpentry. The details of the back-seat camber regulator (highlighted in bluish-gray on the right in the figure) are wooden because the oak (or beech) locking rod does not rest on the holes at the points, as usual, but on the rails along the entire length; the rest of the metal fasteners are ready-made purchased (M6 bolts with pressure washers and nuts for them). By arranging the regulator rails in a different way or simply stuffing them more, you can achieve any camber adjustment limit and the number of its steps from those indicated above. Most of the structural details are made of 40x25 timber, except for the head and knee screeds - they are fastened with pairs of confirmatory furniture screws and therefore are made of 60x30 or 80x40 boards (in section).

Headrest

Achilles' heel of soft chaise lounges - head and popliteal supports-screeds. If the patella does not really interfere, then the headrest is very felt by the neck or the back of the head. Therefore, the headrest of a soft chaise longue is almost always made double (which, by the way, also increases the transverse rigidity of the structure) and turns into a bed fabric, see Fig. change at least every season.

Note: drawings of a soft garden deck chair of a classical design are given in the figure:

Without adjustment

A soft garden-cottage deck chair for one person or several of similar height, corpulence and complexion can be quickly made unregulated from improvised materials. An example of this kind of design is shown in the video:

Video: homemade deck chair for giving

One of the commentators of this video states that this deckchair is prone to transverse parallelogram folding. Why he called the horizontal transverse axis the z-axis, he knows better. But in the described design, there are enough cross-links of rigidity and at least 3 virtual boxes can be distinguished that prevent exactly parallelogram folding. Who did not study building mechanics, just look at any panel or monolithic house. Where are the oblique / diagonal slabs, beams, columns? But it's worth it. And if it collapses from excessive influence from the outside, then it is in no way parallelogram.

Let's move on to anatomy.

It is much more difficult to make a hard anatomical deck chair than a soft one, and you cannot carry / carry it with you, but rest in it will be much more pleasant and complete. First, let's define the purpose of the product. To relax after hard work and / or elderly people, you need a deck chair with a low back and a deep dip under the pelvic region, pos. And in fig. For the beach and relaxation in general, a deck chair with a raised back and a small smooth ledge under the lower back is more suitable. In the first case, it is necessary to ensure the outflow of blood from the loaded (possibly sick) legs; in the second - to prevent its rush to the legs. Of course, the best will be a transformable deck chair, which allows you to implement one or another anatomical scheme.

Note: pre-liberal Americans put their feet on the table at every opportunity not at all their rudeness. Then they only had managers not lower than the middle level who worked sitting in a chair, and the rest, like wolves, were fed by their legs.

Topchan

Let's start with a simple one, without any physiological and anatomical subtleties. You can quite well relax on an ordinary beach trestle bed, but is it possible to somehow improve it without complicating and increasing the cost?

Drawings of a simple beach chair-trestle bed with an adjustable headboard are given on the left in the figure, and on the right in the same place - with the same improvement that makes the bed more ergonomic. Specifically, with slightly profiled sidewalls. In this case, it is better to use an ordinary combat board on the tsargs, 2-3 times soaked with eco-primer; flooring - from slats 30x30 or 40x40. This deck chair will either be painted or varnished with acrylic varnish for outdoor use in 3-4 layers; in this case, the wood will not fade in 4-6 years.

Frame or beams?

Frame in Russian frame without any Hi-Tech. It is now customary to call frame structures with a supporting frame and non-working skin; again in Russian frame.

Frame carrier schemes (see, for example, on the left in the figure) are widely used in furniture production, incl. anatomical lounge chairs economy and middle price segment, due to the minimum consumption of material; their labor intensity in automated production is also low. The flooring on the frame frame (claims about the tautology - to the authors of the term) can be laid from longitudinal or transverse lamellas. But for an amateur working in a garage or on a balcony, the frame design is clearly complicated.

If you look closely at the photos of expensive / elite anatomical deck chairs, it turns out that most of them are made according to the beam scheme with a working longitudinal planking of the flooring (on the right in the figure); the transverse beams are laid on the drawers without a tie-in and are attached to them with self-tapping screws. The point here is not only and not so much in the "steepness of the grandmas" - rest on a deck chair with a longitudinal flooring is much more complete, because. the ribs of the lamellas are not felt by the body already through a single-layer terry blanket. In addition, the lamellas can be made from a single layer of 6 mm plywood and are mounted plastic immediately after impregnation without a plaza right in place, see above. But the flooring of the bed of a beam deck chair can only be longitudinal, because. his cover is working.

Note: in fact, the only case when the bed of an anatomical deck chair is possible only from transverse lamellae is a quick-assembly / collapsible deck chair like the one in fig. on the right or shown in the video below:

Video: anatomical lounge chair

Design examples

Master furniture makers, both amateurs and professionals, rarely apply the canons meticulously and scrupulously. Any product of human hands requires a creative approach, and in the practical designs of deck chairs, the basic principles of their construction are applied with various combinations and modifications.

For example, a deck chair, the drawings of which are given in Fig., can be classified as partially transformable. The profile of its tsarg (on the right in the figure) is chosen so that, depending on the inclination of the bed, this deck chair is suitable for both deep rest and thoughtless relaxation. The power circuit is combined: a small number of transverse beams (not support ones) work in conjunction with the flooring of the bed from thin boards (better - plywood lamellas). As a result, the design is technologically simple and low material consumption.

On the trail. rice. - an example of a different approach to the same problem: a rocking chair (cell side of the section drawing is 100 mm; flooring from 30x40 slats). Here the “mechanism of transformation” is the resting person himself: leaning back or leaning forward, he chooses for himself (perhaps unconsciously) the most comfortable position. Swinging, you can combine both types of recreation. If a deck chair is under a tree, then the psychological relaxation from contemplating the fluttering foliage against the sky will enhance and complement the physiological one.

For the elderly and / or people who are very tired of physical labor, a deck chair is more suitable - a recumbent rocking chair with a canopy (see fig.). If the body aches, the legs are filled with lead, and, moreover, the romantic illusions of youth are behind, the flickering in front of the eyes and the bright light in them only irritate, but when the fatigue subsides, the canopy canopy can be rolled up “to suit the mood”.

Drawings of a mobile double sun lounger with a folding canopy

A massive structure that can be rolled into a secluded corner, a strong elastic bed woven from a rope (preferably a propylene cross lay); in such a deck chair, a vacation together can be very, very active. And over time, its natural result will be to the taste of an anatomical children's deck chair (sidewall profile in the figure below; cell 10x10 cm, dimensions also in cm).

The best way to relax after working in the garden is to lie on a sun lounger and drink juice. At the same time, it is important whether such an armchair will fit into the environment around and whether it will give a feeling of peace. If you can’t buy furniture for a summer residence, then you can make it yourself.

But even before make your own sun lounger, you need to choose the type of this country furniture. It should also be taken into account that the craftsmen do not recommend using plastic as the basis for a deck chair due to the lack of quality and fragility of this material. But the wooden base, even and smooth, is the best fit, although such a chair will be heavy. But this disadvantage can be compensated by the rollers installed on the legs of the deck chair.

The type of this furniture depends on the design of the chaise lounge chair, namely:

  1. Monolithic deck chair.
  2. Monolithic deck chair with inserts.
  3. Portable product.
  4. Chaise lounge chair on a base made of metal.

A monolithic chaise lounge is an armchair, the components of which are joined together during the manufacturing process of the product and can no longer be disassembled. Such furniture is durable, hardy and can withstand a significant load. But using this deck chair is not very convenient. It cannot change the slope of the back, it cannot be folded, and therefore it is very difficult to move from one place to another.

Monolithic chaise longue with inserts- this type of country furniture, made by hand, will certainly be beautiful, aesthetically attractive and neat. But these additionally inserted parts, which can be made of different materials, reduce the strength and reliability of the entire product.

A portable product that is designed to a mechanism that allows you to quickly and easily change the position and configuration of the entire sun lounger. The inclination of the footrest, the inclination of the headrest and the back of the chair can be changed. And yet such a product can be folded and made compact when transported to the country.

Chaise lounge chair on a metal base. This type of country furniture is difficult to do on your own, so it is usually bought ready-made. This product has a frame made of aluminum or steel, and a canvas made of fabric is already attached to it. This country product is light, compact, resistant to pollution and easy to carry.

What you need to work

In order to independently make a country deck chair out of wood, the following tools and materials should be available:

For sun loungers made by hand, it is best to use sheets of wood spruce or other needles. Such material is moisture resistant and is not subject to the negative influence of temperature changes. Such wood is sold in building materials sales centers or made to order by carpenters.

Chaise lounge dimensions and the beginning of the process of its creation

Chaise lounge made of wooden material can be done with the size of your body or according to the size of the future owner. But you can use the standard size of the product, namely, sixty by one hundred and ninety centimeters. First you need to make all the necessary drawings. So, do-it-yourself deck chair drawings can be found on our website.

After you have decided on the dimensions, you can start making a deck chair: form the sides of the deck chair from the bars and form the frame of the product, fixing its details with the help of corners; upholster all the outer sides of the created frame with boards; carry out the following assembly steps.

Stages of work on the independent creation of a summer lounge chair

It is necessary to prepare the legs of the deck chair from the bars of the required height. The standard height for the legs of the product is approximately five to ten centimeters, but if necessary, you can use a different height.

At a distance of five to seven centimeters from the edges of the long bars, it is necessary to fix the legs long with screws. In the center of the legs, the rollers should be fixed with smaller screws (about three centimeters).

With an electric jigsaw, you should cut parts of the lattice for a summer lounge chair made by yourself. by the most a suitable size for planks is eight by sixty centimeters. Then you should screw the planks to the frame of the deck chair for giving with the help of spacers to obtain the desired gaps (from one to two centimeters). After completing all these steps, the deck chair must be sanded and painted.

If a decision is made to make a sun lounger on your own, which will be folding, then the wood grate will need to be divided into two parts, then connecting them with door hinges. Moreover, it is necessary to remember about the fastener bar, which should rest on the rack fixed with screws.

The process of creating a deck chair based on a frame made of dense fabric

One of the most popular and at the same time a simple way to independently create a summer lounger is to make it from a dense fabric on a frame. For summer cottages, this is a light and very comfortable product that can be quickly turned from a deck chair into a chair and back into a sunbed.

Materials and tools for work:

It is necessary to use a dense fabric that is resistant to wear, to water, to the influence of the sun. It can be denim, canvas, tarpaulin. In this case, the slats must be birch, oak or beech (as they are hard and durable).

To independently make a light summer lounge chair, you need to prepare slats of the required length and grind them. And then you need to collect all the details.

Stages of product assembly

Follows the drill make holes on long rails for selected bolts(from the edges you need to retreat from seven to ten centimeters); all defects must be sanded with a file. Holes must be drilled at the head of the frame in order to be able to change the position of the backrest.

In order to make a seat, two more holes should be drilled at the ends of the rails with a large length; their diameters should match the diameters of the round rails; for their more reliable fixing, the ends must be coated with polyvinyl acetate glue.

Then you need to combine the structures with screws that pass through the top holes, and then fix it.

After that, you need to stretch the fabric, wrap its edges on the crossbars and sew it with a strong thread (if this is done before the final assembly of the deck chair, you can sew the fabric on a sewing machine).

Armchair Kentucky

This chair is original, it is completely assembled from bars. It can be folded up and put away for storage.

To make your own kentucky chair you will need the following materials:

The assembly of the Kentucky chair is as follows. Finished the bars should be processed to give them strength and beauty and also to protect against UV rays, water and wind. To do this, the wood is treated with stain (Beitz). For a deck chair, you should purchase an outdoor stain based on oil and wax. You can use parquet oil, which is suitable for any wood product.

After completing the preparation of all the bars, you need to clean all their faces with fine-grained sandpaper.

After reading this article you can make a summer deck chair with your own hands without using the services of masters or the advice of their friends. It is not difficult if you do everything according to the instructions and carefully follow all its points. Learn to do everything with your own hands and improve your skills!

Chaise lounges are attractive because they are characterized by low weight and can be used to relax anywhere - on the veranda, in the garden, when leaving the city, and so on. Based on this, the appropriate design is selected - monolithic, sliding, portable (a very convenient option for transportation) and a number of others.

The cost of the simplest models of sun loungers available for sale starts from 3,080 rubles. On the one hand, it's attractive. But the main drawback of finished products is that many of them simply do not suit the buyer - one in size, the second - design, the third - the frame material. The conclusion suggests itself - to make a deck chair with your own hands, just “for yourself”.

This concept is generalized. An important question is what breed to focus on. Before dealing with the drawings of a deck chair and the progress of work on its manufacture, it is worth clarifying which wood is best suited.

Firstly, mostly with their own hands (if we are not talking about a professional working on orders), those who want to save money sensibly do something. Therefore, it is unlikely that anyone will use an expensive tree (for example, beech or oak).

Secondly, all breeds differ in various properties and characteristics, including the density of the structure (and this is the weight and ease of moving a deck chair). Therefore, when choosing a tree, it is necessary to take into account the specifics of its operation, depending on which the corresponding drawing is developed.

Thirdly, such sun loungers for the house (apartment) are not purchased or assembled by hand. The main place for installing a sun lounger is outside the building (near the pool, in the summer cottage, etc.). Consequently, the tree will be exposed not only to dampness, but also to the effects of sunlight. And here is some contradiction. Coniferous trees are less prone to rotting, but when heated, they "tar". Even if the lounger after manufacturing and (paint), this is not a way out.

Therefore, for example, cheap spruce for the manufacture of deck chairs is undesirable to use. In addition, not everyone can tolerate the tart smell of resin. On the Internet, there are numerous tips for assembling a deck chair with your own hands from this particular tree. The author has already outlined his arguments against. Well, to take them into account or not, you, the reader, will have to decide.

  • Larch. Strength, durability will be provided.
  • Ash. Good texture, ease of processing - these are pluses. Cons - it will cost a little more, and it’s not very suitable for a portable model of a deck chair because of the density (hence, weight) of the tree. Although for a stationary sunbed - one of the best options.

Plywood

There are quite a lot of various schemes, drawings of sun loungers. In some cases, in the manufacture of such a do-it-yourself lounger, for individual structural elements, not solid wood is used, but materials based on it. Mainly - multilayer plywood. This partially reduces the overall weight of the product. The assortment of such products is quite large, but this does not mean that you can take any of its types. Of the budget options in the private sector, two types of plywood are popular -.

The dimensions of their sheets and the main characteristics are almost identical. The fundamental difference is in the adhesive composition, which holds the veneer layers together. Used in the manufacture of PSF is somewhat toxic. That is why this type of plywood is recommended only for external work (solid lathing for soft roofing, facade cladding, and so on). Therefore, it is definitely not suitable for a sun lounger - only FC. In terms of "environmental friendliness" there are no complaints about it.

Textile

In some models of sun loungers, it is also used. There are few criteria here - strength, minimum extensibility and susceptibility to fading. Therefore, you should focus primarily on the material is sufficiently dense and monophonic. The fact is that coloring substances (pigments) burn out with different intensity, and “bald spots” may gradually appear on a canvas with bright patterns.

fastener elements

Briefly on this point - with a protective coating or from stainless metals (alloys). Since sun loungers are often made for outdoor installation, corrosion of the "iron" cannot be avoided. "Rust" will quickly come through even through the paint, and in terms of maintainability (with the replacement of individual parts) there will be difficulties.

Examples of sun lounger drawings

It is not difficult for the owner, who is used to doing everything with his own hands, to develop his own model. Especially if you accurately imagine what the result should be. Examples can suggest some ideas, features of engineering solutions - and nothing more.

  • A deck chair is almost always made per user. Therefore, its optimal length (in the unfolded position) is 200 ± 10, width - 65 ± 5 (cm).
  • The optimal parameters of lumber are considered (in mm): sheets (plates) with a thickness of 10 to 15, bars - from 3 x 4 to 5 x 5, boards - by 15. This is quite enough to ensure the reliability of the deck chair in combination with a small mass. The use of larger samples (there are similar models, judging by the drawings) is not advisable. On such pieces of furniture, unlike armchairs, beds, sofas, children will not jump. And wooden blanks of the indicated dimensions will withstand the weight of one person, especially in "statics".

Do-it-yourself deck chair - progress of work

Tree layout

In the manufacture of simple models of deck chairs, this is not difficult to do, having a ready-made drawing, and, accordingly, the dimensions of all components. The only thing to consider is the rationality of using lumber. In other words, markup in such a way as to minimize the amount of waste.

It is more difficult if the deck chair has some curly structural elements - handles, supports, and so on. In this case, you will have to make patterns. First, a given detail is drawn on a sheet of graph paper, then its dimensions are projected onto thick cardboard. A blank is cut out of it, superimposed on lumber, on which its contour is outlined. Next is the selection of wood. If we are talking about plywood, then the easiest way is to make cutouts with your own hands using.

Parts processing

  • This applies to both grinding surfaces and rounding all edges. Whatever tool is used to cut a tree, its microscopic fractions along the cut line will definitely remain. And these are potential bugs.
  • Wood, regardless of variety, is affected by mold and fungus. It's all about time, and this largely depends on the breed and operating conditions. But in any case, it is necessary.

Drying lumber

In this case, it means its additional exposure before assembling the deck chair, after impregnation. Even if the tree was initially selected dry, then it is likely that during storage it was partially saturated with moisture. Therefore, drying after processing will not hurt. At the same time, it will be possible to make sure that the geometry of the parts is not broken. If any distortions appear, then it is better to level them immediately than to disassemble the finished deck chair later and eliminate the shortcomings (or completely replace the part).

Construction assembly

There is a drawing on which, in addition to the dimensions, the places of articulation of the parts are indicated, so the algorithm of actions is chosen independently. It is worth noting some features:

Many questions are raised by the specifics of fastening structural elements. What to use?

Firstly, as fasteners - only self-tapping screws, and on wood. Nails are not suitable for this purpose because they easily split dry material. Yes, and it is not always possible to score them strictly vertically. Given the small thickness of the wood blanks, it is not a fact that the ends of the fasteners will not come out. In terms of maintainability, self-tapping screws also win - it is not difficult to disassemble / replace a part / assemble a deck chair.

Secondly, you should not be limited to only one fastener. Be sure to think about strengthening the structure. How to do this depends on the skills of the master and the specific scheme. Spike-groove joints (with landing on glue), corners, slats, earrings - there are enough options.

The installation of fasteners also has its own peculiarity. So that cracks do not appear in the tree, and the self-tapping screw goes without distortions, a channel is first drilled. The cross section is slightly smaller than that of the stem of the hardware. Next - a chamfer (according to the diameter of its head), with the expectation that it "drowns" by about 0.5 - 1 mm. Disguising fasteners in a tree is easy. On sale there are not only sealants and mastics, but also plastic mini-plugs designed specifically for hiding connecting elements in furniture. Moreover, any color, so you can choose the tone of the overall design of the deck chair.

If it turns out to be massive enough, you should think about installing roller bearings in the lower parts of the legs. In furniture stores you can find a suitable option. Such a deck chair will be easy to move alone.

These are the main recommendations, since DIY assembly is a creative process. Having a ready-made drawing of a deck chair and minimal skills in working with the simplest household tool, it will not be difficult to make individual structural elements and assemble it. The main thing is to think carefully about everything, and success is guaranteed.

Not so long ago, a deck chair was considered exotic, and only wealthy people could afford it. We saw sun loungers in colorful magazines and American films, but even with a strong desire, an attempt to buy something like this for ourselves would have turned out to be a failure - there simply were no sun loungers for sale.

Well, everything passes sooner or later, and the information revolution generously endows us with new opportunities. Now anyone can find on the Internet a manual on how to make a sun lounger with your own hands. However, such plans are often difficult to implement, especially for a beginner. They require the use of a large number of expensive tools, and therefore remain unfeasible for many.

This master class is a pleasant exception to the rule. The deck chair presented by the author has a simple design and a clear system of folding and adjusting the backrest. If you approach the issue of choosing materials correctly, you will need a very modest arsenal of power tools and, in extreme cases, you could well borrow some of them from friends and acquaintances.

In addition, given the fact that the deck chair is made of natural wood, it can easily be used at home as well, instead of a couch or armchair in the living room. It quickly folds and unfolds, has a completely finished appearance. A beautiful textile mattress will complement the image, and the deck chair will perfectly fit into the interior of your home.

In order to make a deck chair with your own hands, you will need:

Materials:

Pine board 20 - 30 mm thick;
- slats with a section of 30 x 30 or 40 x 40 mm for the manufacture of a backrest folding system;
- natural or mineral oil for woodworking, drying oil or varnish for woodworking;
- screws and small nails;
- glue for gluing wood materials;
- metal one-piece loops for fixing the back: two more and a smaller pair;
- a ready-made mattress with ties for fixing it or fabric, batting, foam rubber and threads for its manufacture.

Tools:

Miter saw, circular saw or wood saw;
- a grinder if you are using old or unpolished boards;
- screwdriver or Phillips screwdriver;
- electric drill;
- a clamp with a device for drilling pocket inclined holes (optional, but greatly facilitates the work);
- paint brushes;
- construction tape measure and square;
- pencil.

Step One: Sketch and Layout the Chaise Longue

A product layout is simply necessary if it itself consists of a large number of parts. It will not allow you to get confused in their countless list and will significantly speed up the entire work process. In addition, you will have the entire list of parts and their exact size. Well, without this, then?

But everything is preceded by a sketch. This sketch on a sheet of paper by hand gives rise to an idea and lays the main outlines of the image of the future product. That's where you should start.

In your case, the computer layout of the deck chair is already ready and you can safely take all the dimensions indicated in this master class as a basis. But first, write down on paper the entire list of parts that you have to make. Specify their sizes opposite and only after that proceed to work.

Step two: making parts

The detailing you have collected should be transferred to the material in the form of markings. Use a pencil for this to easily correct crept in errors. Also use a construction square. Especially if you plan to use a hand saw to cut the boards. It will allow you to mark angles at 45 and 90 degrees, and accuracy is never superfluous.

So, mark up the parts and start making them. Saw the boards into pieces of the length indicated on your list. You will need:

Two longitudinal frame parts 1850 mm long;
- five transverse frame parts 470 mm long;
- four blanks for legs 280 mm long;
- four - five boards for the base of a deck chair 1270 mm long;
- two side long boards for the base of a deck chair 190 mm long;
- two small slats for supporting the backrest when folded, 580 mm long;
- three bars for the manufacture of the backrest 43 mm long;
- four - five boards for the base of the back;
- two slats for the backrest folding system, 230 mm long;
- one horizontal rail for the backrest folding system, 460 mm long;
- six small pieces of rail for the backrest folding system - three on each side.

All indicated dimensions should be specified, since the author indicated them in inches. They also depend on the thickness of the boards you are using. To figure out the dimensions in your case, always start with the general values and work your way down to the finer details.

Step three: assembling the sun lounger

Start by assembling the deck chair frame. Remember that it is customary to assemble any frame with screws. This ensures the relative strength of the entire structure. However, it often happens that screws alone are not enough. Then glue is also used. Such combined connections serve very well and do not require repair for a long time.

Assemble the chaise lounge frame with glue and screws and fix the legs. Fasten the base parts to the frame with small nails. In parallel, make the back panel.

Inside the hole for the back on the sides, screw two support rails on which the back rests when folded and on which sections of the rail (teeth) are attached to adjust the inclination of the back. Fix your teeth.

Connect the back to the frame using a pair of one-piece metal loops. Also make a U-shaped piece for the back and secure it in place with the smaller loops. Check backrest adjustment.

Step Four: Wood Protection

Any furniture sooner or later is subject to wet cleaning. Untreated wood hardly tolerates such processing, and the result often turns out to be zero. Therefore, the tree must be treated with suitable paints and varnishes.

The author decided to leave the wood unpainted so that it could be seen that it was made from natural wood. In this case, the most reasonable option would be to varnish the deck chair with a matte or semi-gloss transparent varnish.

Since furniture is usually used very intensively, you should choose a varnish that will give the most durable and wear-resistant coating. For example, profile furniture varnish. Apply it to the surface of the wood in several layers and let each one dry thoroughly.

Do-it-yourself sun lounger or deck chair is quite easy to make. Such a home-made simple garden accessory is not only functional, but will also become a real decoration of the local area. Such peculiar clamshells differ not only in size, but also in appearance.

Chaise lounges and deck chairs for summer cottages: the main types

Chaise longue (Chaise longue) - a popular folding easy chair for relaxing in a reclining position. Such beach structures are easily transformed. A simple wooden accessory can be a great option not only for the beach and outdoor pools, but quite often used as garden furniture, replacing a comfortable and practical chair on open verandas or terraces. There is both an adult and a children's version of a deck chair, for the manufacture of which solid wood, durable plastic, durable aluminum or synthetic fabric are used.

Depending on the design features, there is the following conditional classification of such products:

  • monolithic chairs, represented by components that are fixedly connected to each other, with a high level of strength and designed for significant loads. The feature is safety. The disadvantages include the inability to fold the structure and make changes to the angle of the backrest, which complicates the process of storage and transportation;
  • monolithic chairs with special inserts, characterized by very high rates of decorativeness. They have additional fragments made of various materials, which can adversely affect the level of reliability and strength of such a design;
  • portable models, characterized by the presence of special mechanisms, make it easy and simple, without much hassle, to change the position of such a lounge chair. There is also a great opportunity to change the angle on the footrest and headrest. The folding model is very compact and suitable for transportation in an ordinary car.

Models with a metal base are extremely rarely performed independently and are distinguished by the presence of aluminum or steel frames with fixed fabric durable canvases. The advantages of such chairs include low weight and mobility. and a high degree of operating comfort. Among other things, modern materials are distinguished by a high level of resistance to various adverse external factors, as well as pollution that can be obtained during operation.

How to make a wooden deck chair with your own hands: drawings and stages of work

The drawing and manufacturing schemes of a wooden deck chair are presented in large numbers, but in order to independently complete such a design, you can also use a simple step-by-step instruction.

Kentucky Armchair Workshop

A very original model is the Kentucky version, completely assembled from wooden bars. This chair can be folded, it is very convenient to store. For self-production, you will need to purchase:

  • galvanized wire with a diameter of 0.4 cm;
  • galvanized brackets in the amount of sixteen pieces;
  • hammer and wire cutters;
  • fine-grained sandpaper;
  • wooden bars measuring 50x33 mm;
  • antiseptic composition and wood varnish, as well as a brush.

It is easy to assemble the structure yourself. Holes are drilled in the bars with a diameter of one and a half millimeters more than the thickness of the wire used. If necessary, you can replace the staples and wire with galvanized studs, the edges of which are fixed with nuts and washers.

A simple option for making a sun lounger out of wood for sunbathing

This option is easy to manufacture, but rather bulky and does not allow you to change the position of the back. Before proceeding with self-production, it is necessary to determine the dimensions of the structure. The optimal length of the lounger is considered to be two meters with a width of 0.6 m.

The main stages in the manufacture of a model of a sun lounger made of wood are as follows:

  • production of a frame base of a lounger from four sidewalls, a pair of which are two meters long, and two are 60 cm long;
  • sheathing the outer part of the frame with polished boards, 2.5 cm wide;
  • fixation on the long sidewalls of four legs with an indent from the edge of the structure of 80 mm using galvanized self-tapping screws;
  • it is best to use stable wooden blocks 100 mm long for the manufacture of the legs of the lounger.

At the next stage, the lattice is assembled, which is the main part of the outdoor lounger. Using an electric wooden board, it is necessary to cut boards with dimensions of 10x60 cm. All serrations and roughness on wooden blanks must be removed with fine sandpaper. Finished boards are fixed with galvanized self-tapping screws on the frame base of the deck chair and a gap of one and a half centimeters, which will allow you to get a convenient and attractive product.

Somewhat less often, models with a comfortable adjustable back are performed. In this case, the lattice should be divided into a couple of parts, one of which is used directly as a sunbed, and the other part serves as a comfortable headboard. Two parts are installed on connecting boards, and standard door hinges of the required dimensions are used to fasten the lattice elements. To fix the headboard in a certain position, a transverse bar is used, which is installed on the inner edge of the frame base of the structure. To such a bar, with the help of galvanized screws, the support post of the headboard is fixed. The finished structure must be carefully sanded, and then coated with varnish-based compositions or special varnishes.

How to make a folding fabric chaise longue with your own hands

One of the most convenient and easy-to-make options is represented by a fabric seat on a frame base. Such a model is quite mobile and can be transferred from place to place, as well as easily folded to an almost flat state. The following materials are used in the manufacture:

  • furniture bolts and nuts D-8mm;
  • two wooden slats of round section 65 cm long;
  • two wooden slats of round section 50 cm long;
  • slats of rectangular section 65 cm long with a section of 25x60 mm;
  • a piece of durable and water-repellent fabric measuring 200 x 50 cm.

You will also need to purchase a round file and fine-grained sandpaper, as well as PVC glue. Experts recommend giving preference to slats obtained from wood species such as oak or birch. As a durable and reliable fabric, types are used that are most resistant to abrasion and are characterized by increased strength indicators. Mattress teak has proven itself best, as well as tarpaulin, denim and camouflage fabric, and canvas.

Manufacturing technology of a folding fabric model:

  • cutting rails of standard length and carefully grinding their surface with sandpaper;
  • with a distance of 0.7 and 0.4 m from the corners, holes are drilled, after which they are polished with a round needle file;
  • so that during operation the position of the backrest changes, with a distance of 8.0 cm, three or four cutouts must be made;
  • with a sufficient indent from the two ends of the wooden slats, holes are drilled for arranging the seat;
  • the end part of the round wooden slats are lubricated with PVA glue and installed in the drilled holes.

The assembly of the frame ends with the installation of a fabric seat. Seat sewing is carried out after measuring the finished frame. The crossbars are wrapped around the edge of the cut and fixed with standard furniture nails. It is also allowed to loop fasten the fabric seat to the crossbars.

We buy a ready-made deck chair: characteristics of the species and selection criteria

To date, a deck chair is a very popular and sought-after product, mainly as a comfortable and beautiful garden furniture. All modern deck chairs or deck chairs are divided according to the material used in the manufacturing process. A significant number of models are made of reliable and high-quality plastic, but there are products made from processed wood and modern metals. Various combined models are especially popular., in which the frame base is made of wood or steel pipes, and the seat is made of wood or fabrics. Some beds have wicker details based on artificial or natural fibers.

Factory products made of modern plastics of different colors are resistant to negative external influences, including ultraviolet, precipitation and wind. Wooden factory products are characterized by surfaces that have undergone a three-stage treatment, represented by a primer, subsequent painting and decorative finishing, which allows such a deck chair to be used in conditions of high humidity, in the open air.

All manufactured products are divided into folding and non-folding models. and also have a rising or falling footboard and headboard. As a rule, the position of the backrest is changed with the help of grooves located on the supporting frame. For example, the Lucca chaise lounge from a German manufacturer is made on the basis of aluminum and modern textiles, and the position of the backrest can be adjusted without getting up by loosening the locking levers located in the access area.

In recent years, owners of suburban real estate are increasingly giving preference to a comfortable and very original variety of a deck chair - duchesse breeze. Such a modern model is a design represented by a very spacious and deep armchair, with a convenient side stool that can be placed next to the main part or fixed by fastening. The sunbed can be folded, transforming into a comfortable armchair or chair, which is convenient for transportation. The most modern models have a raised and lowered footboard, as well as a retractable sunscreen, convertible armrests, as well as roomy compartments for storing various accessories.
