If you value your small and cozy apartment, despite all the hardships and deprivations that it presents to you every day, this lesson is for you. You can significantly increase the free space in the bedroom with just one item - this is a folding bed with your own hands. The main and most expensive element in this assembly is a spring mechanism, with the help of which any ordinary wardrobe can turn into an unusual folding bed.

Step 1: Cabinet Frame

Before starting work on assembling the cabinet frame, you need to decide on the wood. As the main material, we chose the cheapest plywood sheets, which were immediately cut to size for us in the workshop. So when you go to choose the material, you need to have a clear idea of \u200b\u200bwhat you want to end up with and have a detailed plan or drawing of a folding bed. We connect three plywood sheets in the form of the letter P and twist them with the help of corners and self-tapping screws.

Step 2: Back baffles

When the U-shaped structure is already formed, it remains to strengthen it with transverse plywood sheets. The first plank on top is at an angle, it will serve as the head of the bed, which is why it is better to tilt it slightly away from the bed. Below, under the headboard, we have a plywood partition, and under it, on the other hand, a beam that gives rigidity to the entire structure.

Step 3: Bed base

As a base for the bed, we made a frame of boards 10 cm high and 2.5 cm thick, in terms of size, our frame should fit perfectly into the frame near the wall. From below, under the frame, we fasten two sheets of plywood, cover the joint of the two sheets again with a plywood sheet.

Step 4: We put it against the wall and fasten the folding mechanism

As soon as the base is ready, we substitute it to the wall and fix it with the help of corners, dowels and self-tapping screws. Also, we will definitely need a folding mechanism, which must be screwed on the sides of the base in accordance with the instructions (detailed and understandable) that come with the kit. You will not find such a mechanism in an ordinary hardware store, so if you do not have a specialized store nearby, we advise you to look for it on the Internet.

Step 5: Putting the Body and Bed Together

At this stage, you just need an assistant, without which it will not be easy to screw and hold the mattress frame. It is noteworthy that already at this stage, after you have connected the folding mechanism with the frame for the mattress, you can safely use such a bed, but you still need to complete the finishing work.

Step 6: Finishing

To make the front of the folding bed look like a closet, we used this simple trick. Pre-cut plywood blanks will form the appearance of two doors and will be able to effectively, and most importantly, inexpensively diversify the boring facade of our bed. How and with what to fasten these boards can be seen in the photo below, you can use both nails and short self-tapping screws.

Well, it was the turn of the dirtiest of all processes - painting. We decided to lighten the whole project a little and used traditional white paint, you have a large choice, so don't be afraid to experiment, create and develop your own individual style.

Step 7: Finished Foldaway Bed

We deliberately did not disclose the details of installing the legs, since they usually come with a folding mechanism, or are sold separately with fairly clear instructions.

Voila! Not too bad for a budget project and a first attempt at something like this. Now it's time to bring in bedside tables, lamps, a mattress, a blanket, pillows, a large rug. Finally screw on the two handles on the front of the bed to make it look more like a closet, and so that there is something to pull on the bed frame.

An example of using and building a similar folding bed

With small apartments in which a large number of people live, there is a need to save space. The issue of furniture placement can become acute in the children's room, especially if it is alone, and several children of school or school are forced to sleep in it. preschool age. To significantly save space, you can buy a folding bed. You can create a drawing and make a wardrobe bed with your own hands. This will significantly save financial expenses and allow you to create a bed of the required dimensions, taking into account the color scheme of the room and the decorative elements in it.

Before starting the process of making a bed, you must have a drawing, following which you can make a wardrobe-bed with or without additional shelves. Detailed scheme the arrangement of the parts will help to create a quality bed as quickly as possible, which will function correctly.

Such schemes most often involve the manufacture of beds with dimensions of 1800 * 2000, 2120 * 1715, 2040 * 2200, 1731 * 2020. These are double beds. Single beds are most often designed for children's rooms, so they are smaller. Since they are installed independently, it is possible to create a drawing of the dimensions of the bed, depending on the availability of free space, the age of the child and the possible use of this bed by younger children after the older ones grow up. To create a transformer bed, the drawings must be as accurate and clear as possible.

To make a wardrobe bed with your own hands, you will need the following tools:

  • Drill;
  • Screwdriver;
  • Electric jigsaw;
  • Saw;
  • File;
  • Pliers;
  • Roulette;
  • Level;
  • Screwdriver;
  • Carpenter's pencil;
  • Sandpaper with different numbers of abrasiveness;
  • Furniture screws;
  • Self-tapping screws.

This is the minimum set of tools; others may be required in the process.

Tools

You also need to have the following materials:

  • furniture boards or chipboard;
  • Wooden beams;
  • Wooden boards;
  • Loops for fastening;
  • corners;
  • Hinge mechanism;
  • Decoration materials;
  • Materials for the manufacture of legs.

This is also the minimum set of materials. Cutting is carried out according to the drawing. It is done like this:

  1. With the help of a tape measure and a pencil, all the details of the future cabinet are made in the form of patterns according to the data from the drawing;
  2. For patterns, you can use connected sheets of whatman paper or wallpaper;
  3. Each element must be signed;
  4. Mark the connection and fastening points of the transformation mechanism.

Frame assembly

To assemble the frame, you need to know the exact dimensions of the proposed bed. They depend on the size of the bed and on the type of bed: single or double. The frame requires 2 side plates located along the frame, 2 side plates for fastening along the width of the bed, as well as a rear base. The back wall will occupy the entire area of the so-called closet, so it should be larger in size than the mattress that will be on the bed. Based on these considerations, it is recommended to make a frame 15 cm larger in width and 40 cm larger in length (a margin in length is necessary for the possibility of folding).

Having decided on the size of the side plates and the back wall for the frame, you must:

  1. Make a cut on a chipboard panel or on a furniture plate, using patterns for this;
  2. Cut out the details with a jigsaw, sand them carefully, turn over the edges;
  3. Prepare markings for fasteners, transferring data from patterns to plates;
  4. Connect the shield with furniture screws, for the reliability of fastening of which, pre-drill a hole with a drill with a drill with the possibility of preparing a groove for the hat and fasteners (the connection with screws should be carried out every 25-35 cm).

Mattress box

Creating a box for a mattress yourself is the most difficult thing in making a wardrobe bed. When cutting, cutting out parts from furniture boards (or from other materials), you should carefully follow the numbers indicated in the drawing. Thanks to this, it will be possible to create a box that will correspond to the dimensions of the frame.

To make a box you need:

  • Two side walls that can be diagonal;
  • One side wall
  • bottom (most suitable material for manufacturing is plywood).

How to make a box:

  1. It is necessary to cut and cut the plywood bottom in the same way as the back wall for the frame;
  2. Make the back and side walls, process their edges with sandpaper and edging tape;
  3. Using furniture screws, attach the side and back walls to the plywood bottom. It is worth adhering to a distance of 25-30 cm between the screws;
  4. Along the perimeter of the resulting structure, it is necessary to lay a wooden beam, which will serve as a support for the mattress pad. It is advisable to use a beam measuring 50 * 50 mm. It is attached with wood screws to the side walls;
  5. To create a mattress pad device, edged boards are used, which are fastened with screws to wooden beam. The length of one board should be such that it reaches from one edge of the beam to the opposite. They are placed in the same plane as the plywood bottom. The distance between the boards is 10-20 cm.

Installation of the transformation mechanism

The lifting mechanism performs the function of moving the box in relation to the immovable frame.

How to mount:

  1. The hinges of the hinge mechanism are screwed onto the bed frame and onto the frame. In this case, the main support should fall on the frame, because it is immovable;
  2. The dimensions of the box and frame are adjusted to each other, and the mechanism is connected;
  3. This work must be done with an assistant;
  4. After mounting the transformation system, it is necessary to raise the box, check its compliance with the dimensions of the frame;
  5. For a level installation of the hinge mechanism, it is necessary to use a level so that the bed rises evenly and thus securely stays on the same plane with the frame. A single line should be achieved at the junction of the upper edge of the frame and the lower edge of the box.

To facilitate the transformation, you can use additional parts that simplify the movement of the mechanism (gas shock absorbers, counterweight). Such mechanisms are especially necessary if a children's or teenage bed is made. It is not recommended to allow children to fold and unfold the folding bed on their own, but even in this case, it is necessary that children can unfold the bed on their own without assistance, so the transformation system built into the closet with your own hands should be easy.

Create a headboard

The head of the transformer cabinet should be made of soft material, especially if the bed is intended for children. It is desirable to make soft not only the headboard, but also the lower part of the side walls of the frame. The easiest option for a soft headboard that you can make yourself is soft foam upholstery. The role of foam rubber can also be performed by a synthetic winterizer.

How to make a headboard:

  1. Fold the softening material in several layers;
  2. This material must be sheathed with a beautiful fabric with decorative elements or quilted stitching;
  3. For ease of care, you can create a detachable cuff with hidden zippers. It will be easy to take it off, wash it and put it on again;
  4. The height of the upholstered headboard should be at least 60-70 cm, and preferably about 1 m. This will ensure the presence of soft upholstery under the back of a seated person at the head of the bed. For the same reason, the same softening upholstery should be prepared for the side walls of the frame;
  5. The height of the foam cushion on the side walls of the frame should match the height of the same upholstery at the head;
  6. The prepared upholstery can be attached to the frame or to the wall using screws and fabric (or made of elastic) loops. If the upholstery is not removable, then the back of the fabric cover can be attached with a stapler.

legs

The legs for such a bed must be movable and turn around at least 180 ° C. In such cases, it is convenient to use metal legs connected together and representing a metal bar with appropriate bends.

How to fasten:

  1. Take measurements of the height of the box above the floor, determine the height of the legs;
  2. Measure the width of the box. Calculate the length of the metal bar;
  3. Weld, grind, varnish a leg or order a finished one;
  4. Prepare holes for mounting on the box and on the leg;
  5. Such legs are attached to the bottom bar of the box so as to attach to a wooden beam in the middle;
  6. Check leg rotation.

When unfolding the transformer, the legs must be rotated 180 degrees and the bed placed on them. When lifting the box, the legs are tucked up so as to be hidden inside the so-called cabinet. In addition, a metal bar that connects two legs (or a straight bar of a cast leg) simultaneously performs the task of holding the mattress on the mattress topper. Thus, its movement during folding and unfolding of the bed is excluded. For the same purpose, you can install limiters at the top edge of the mattress pad. Limiters can serve as horizontal bars. There may be several legs, but in this case the unfolding process becomes more complicated. The leg must be strong in order to support the weight of the box, mattress, bed linen and sleeping people.

Decoration and accessories

With the help of decorative elements, you can completely hide the presence of a transforming bed in the room. There are many ideas for decorating the bottom plank of a bed frame that looks into the room. One of the most beautiful and simple options- this is to create an imitation of a three-door or four-door wardrobe.

Imitation of doors can be done using wooden planks and handles, supposedly designed to open such doors. A mirror can be placed on one of the doors.

Another a good option hide the presence of a transforming bed in the room - mount this wardrobe in the furniture wall, creating a bed from furniture plates of the same color as the wall. Next to other parts of the wall, the cabinet will look quite natural, especially if you add decorative elements such as handles and slats. At the same time, adjacent cabinets in the wall can be used to store bed linen, which will greatly simplify the process of cleaning the bed every morning.

It is not always possible to equip your home the first time. Sometimes it takes years to make repairs in the apartment to achieve the desired result. It is very difficult to create comfort and coziness in small rooms of small apartments. The solution to the issue can be completely unexpected - this is a bed in the wall or in the closet, which can make the room not only functional, but also beautiful. A bed built into the wall is very popular in apartments where there is not enough free space.

Like any other furniture, a folding bed has its advantages and disadvantages.

  1. Saving usable space is the main task of the built-in bed. When assembled, the furniture looks like a closet, and at night it turns into a comfortable sleeping place;
  2. A variety of models - furniture developers have come up with several styles and types of similar models. It is easy to find an option in the old classic design or high-tech style. The surface of the product on the outside is sometimes decorated with mirrors that visually increase the volume of the room. This technique is very successful for small rooms;
  3. The functionality of the product - at the base of the bed, special partitions serve as supports, which, when the bed is raised, are transformed into shelves;
  4. With the help of a built-in bed, you can change the interior of the room, disassembling and assembling the bed.

Along with the advantages, there are several disadvantages of the product:

  1. High cost - this is due to the installation of expensive lifting mechanisms in the design of furniture. The price of a bed consists of several factors: product frame material, upholstery, mattress, installed lifting mechanisms;
  2. The need for daily transformation of the bed;
  3. The unreliability of the lifting mechanism in low quality models. Some owners of such furniture have a fear that the bed can be assembled at the most inopportune moment - when a person is sleeping;
  4. On folding furniture, unlike stationary, you can not sit down at any moment. To rest, you have to disassemble it.

Kinds

Bed that retracts into the wall or closet appearance is no different from a regular cabinet. Handles are installed at the bottom of the bed base, and decorated with surrounding furniture.

In the furniture industry, two types of built-in products are produced:

  • horizontal;
  • Vertical.

The first option provides for single and one and a half models. The dimensions of the berth are made smaller than the overall size of the bed so that there is room in the upper part for the shelves. They are used to store various things. Vertical lifting beds are wider than horizontal ones. Given the length and weight of the product, the model is mounted to the wall of the room. The wall must be strong and reliable to support the weight of the structure. Walls out drywall sheets and cellular concrete will not work. Modern ways production allow you to create various options design of furniture products.

By type of construction, the following types of folding beds are distinguished:

  • A bed with a lifting vertical mechanism built into the wardrobe with a headboard against the wall;
  • Built-in bed with horizontal mechanism side to the wall;
  • Wardrobe bed with sliding halves that cover the assembled bed.

According to the type of bed, built-in beds are:

  • Single beds - differ in a narrow mattress, within 80-90 x 180-200 cm;
  • Lorries are wider, they can comfortably accommodate an adult or two children. Dimensions range from 120-140 x 180-200 cm;
  • Double - options that offer a full bed with a width of 160-180 x 190-200 cm. You can choose an option that consists of two halves of 70-95 cm wide;
  • Three-sleeping - are a two-level design with an upper bed of 70-90 cm and a lower bed of 120-160 cm;
  • Bunk - most often installed in children's rooms. The width of the products is in the range of 80-120 cm, the length varies from 150 to 200 cm.

All of them are equipped with a spring or foam mattress. The frame of the furniture is made of wood fiber board. medium density(MDF) or laminated chipboard (chipboard). Usage natural wood in lifting products increases total weight construction, and therefore requires the installation of reinforced lifting mechanisms, which affects the cost of furniture.

Folding bed

This kind upholstered furniture is in great demand. The main requirement is the practicality of the product. Rollaway beds within small room help create the image of a bedroom combined with a living room or a children's room.

The strength of such products is their ability to simultaneously create comfort and save space. Furniture can be folded and disassembled, saving the interior from congestion. The type of folding bed is vertical or horizontal. A folded bed makes room for other activities.

In appearance, the folding design is completely different. In stores you can see budget options, and quite expensive copies. If furniture is still not possible to buy for various reasons, then it is easy to do it yourself. It just needs to be properly prepared. desired material and fixtures. For the installation of the structure, the walls must be reliable and durable, made of a material that can withstand heavy loads. Do not use drywall walls or partitions as a base for installing a folding bed, as well as light wooden walls.

Built-in closet

Beds built into wardrobes, according to the size of the bed, are divided into:

  • Double;
  • Single;
  • Lorries.

Sometimes they install two beds built into the body of the furniture set. In small rooms often use a closet with a bed on lifting devices. The cabinet doors move apart, the bed lowers, while the headboard remains only three dozen centimeters inside the cabinet, which does not interfere at all. The main disadvantage of this design is that the opening of the cabinet sash blocks neighboring furniture. This is very inconvenient, because if you need to take something from the shelf, you will need to raise the bed again and close the closet.

To avoid this, they came up with one trick - a wardrobe with triple doors, each of which has its own guide. All doors sliding along the rails are moved to one extreme position, opening the bed for use and sections for linen or things. It is advisable to install this design in small rooms. However, open cabinet doors do not always have an aesthetic appearance.

No less interesting will be the built-in bed model in the closet. The result is a practical and multifunctional building. During the day it can be used as furniture for relaxation, and at night you can sleep on a full double bed. Such furniture is conveniently placed in the living room and hall.

In the children's room there is always not enough space for games. With age, the baby needs more and more free space. A folding bed in a wall or closet or a bed built into the closet is the only godsend for loving parents. On the back of the base of the bed, you can securely fix photos of children or any paintings. After lifting the base and placing it in a vertical position, the decorated surface of the imaginary wall will open.

If two kids live in the apartment - it doesn’t matter, you can safely install two built-in beds at once so that you get a bunk model. In the lower tier, you can mount drawers for linen, and in the design of the stairs leading to the upper bed, provide secret lockers. It will be convenient if lifting mechanism fasten on the side of the bed, then it is easier to open.

Hidden

The use of a hidden structure in the interior of an apartment is considered the most effective and convenient method of solving the shortage square meters. Modern standard beds occupy almost the entire area of the room. Because of this, there is nowhere to install other furniture, and there is simply no place for everyday pastime. The hidden bed solves this problem.

Sleeping area very quickly hides in a special recess in the wall. Moreover, when assembled, it almost does not differ from the surface of the entire wall or cabinet. The outer side of the hidden furniture is matched to the tone and quality of the surrounding material. The furniture wall next to the bed will not differ in any way, but will look like a single whole. Designers have developed many practical ideas creating hidden furniture. For example, when rising, the bed turns into a shallow closet with shelves. Or an option when a large mirror is fixed to the bottom of the product from the outside, which in a vertical state increases the space of the room.

On the surface of the furniture, you can apply a drawing or fix the original picture. They will serve as part of the decor of the interior of the room.

Transformer

A convertible bed that folds into a wall or closet includes two types of furniture - this functional wardrobe and a comfortable bed. In the assembled state, the bed does not interfere with anyone and is not visible. If necessary, the design lowers and opens a sleeping bed, where you can relax. In addition, drawers for storing things are often added to the design of the bed.

There are models of beds in which, when raised, the bottom transforms into a storage system. Here shelves can be folded down, holders for hangers can be pulled out. After folding, things on the shoulders are neatly folded into a niche under the mattress.

A built-in transforming bed is a good solution for using free space in apartments with a small living space. Stopping on the choice of this type of furniture, before you buy it, you should carefully study the types of transformable furniture products from various manufacturers.

Mechanism types

Furniture production does not stand still and is constantly evolving. Popular models become obsolete over time and new ones come to replace them, which are also gaining wide popularity. Beds built into the walls and wardrobes have not lost their position for many years and remain in demand. They gained their fame thanks to special mechanisms that allow them to be lifted vertically without much effort.

The lifting device is an important element in the design of a transforming bed. Thanks to these modules, the entire structure, which weighs several tens of kilograms, easily rises and turns into a vertical fragment of a cabinet or wall. Separate several lifting devices:

  • Manual way;
  • Spring mechanism;
  • Gaslift.

The first option is the cheapest, but also the most capricious, requiring periodic adjustment and some effort when lifting a piece of furniture. The mechanism does not contain additional springs and shock absorbers, the lifting is carried out completely by hand.

The second method is less labor intensive. In the spring version, there are already special shock absorbers in the form of twisted springs, which allow you to raise the base of the bed without much effort.

Coiled springs are made of durable carbon steel wire. The service life of such mechanisms reaches 70 years, and this is with the daily transformation of furniture. The only drawback of the device is the appearance of noise during operation. Springs can stretch over time and need to be replaced.

The third option is the most convenient and difficult. The operation of the module is based on the action of piston devices filled with compressed air. When changing the position of the folding bed, the lifting mechanism smoothly changes the position of the furniture. At the same time, you don’t need to make any special efforts, the device will do everything by itself. The gas elevator is by far the most expensive of all types of devices.

There are models of devices equipped with an electric drive with remote control. This is a great way to transform furniture for people with handicapped or those who appreciate everything man-made.

An extra bed in an apartment has never harmed anyone. However, not every resident of a city high-rise building has the opportunity to allocate private room or even a fixed bed. In such a situation, a folding bed will help out a lot, which, if necessary, can also become a camping bed. A do-it-yourself folding bed is quite possible. You will learn how to design it and what is needed for this from the article.

Folding and folding

Folding beds - the concept is broad. Among them there are:

  • folding;
  • folding;
  • transformers.

You can make any type of clamshell with your own hands, and materials for it can be found in hardware stores and furniture fittings.

Folding bed

This is a very convenient option! At night, someone sleeps on a folding bed, during the day it rises and is fixed - about the same as it happens in a train with upper shelves. When there is no passenger on the shelf, it is fastened using special devices. Before you make a folding bed with your own hands, choose its type.

The folding model can be:

  • vertical;
  • horizontal.

The vertical one is attached to the wall along a short edge. This option is suitable for adult single and double beds. But if you need to make a bed for a child, a horizontal model is more suitable - it reclines very easily, even a preschooler can handle the procedure.

Transformer

Such a bed serves as a bed at night, turns into a closet or table during the day. If you need such a do-it-yourself clamshell, it is best to look for drawings in specialized publications. The option is convenient, compact, versatile, but requires a good ability to work with wood and a large number of all kinds of accessories. For example, in a set for a bed, you can do:

  • bookshelves;
  • wardrobe for bedding.

Important! If the transformer turns into a closet, then it is best to put a second one next to it exactly the same, but not folding. You can also make it yourself.

Folding models

A do-it-yourself folding bed can also be foldable - this is the simplest and most popular model. If you decide to start making furniture, but have not yet acquired sufficient skills, you can start with it. There are several types of such folding beds:

  • folding two and a half times - that is, with a folding headrest;
  • straight on folding legs;
  • straight on removable legs.

The first option is the most classic clamshell. Most often done on metal frame. With the help of springs, the fabric is stretched on it.

Important! You can make something similar from wood, abandon the springs, and simply sheathe the sides of the frame with a cloth. You will get an excellent camping bed, which will be good for fishing, and for a long picnic, and on the balcony or in the room.

camp bed

How to make a folding bed with folding legs? It consists of three parts:

  • two identical crosses forming goats;
  • actually the bed, on which the fabric is stretched.

To make goats, you will need:

  • pine bars of rectangular section 50x70 mm;
  • metal bolts with a diameter of 8-10 mm;
  • nuts;
  • nails;
  • screws;
  • drying oil;
  • furniture varnish.

Textile

For the bed you need a very dense fabric that holds mechanical loads well. It could be:

  • tarpaulin;
  • technical capron;
  • technical lavsan.

Important! The tarpaulin is hygienic, but rather heavy and absorbs moisture. It is suitable for a folding bed in the room, but not very good for fishing. Kapron and lavsan are durable, but do not let air through. But they dry quickly and are more suitable for outdoor use.

In addition to the material, you will need threads:

  • kapron for polymeric fabrics;
  • durable cotton - for tarpaulin.

Where to begin?

A do-it-yourself camping bed begins with the manufacture of a bed. You can make it for a specific person (for example, a child) or make it universal. Anyway:

  • The width of the bed should be 60-80 cm for a single bed and 160 cm for a double bed.
  • The standard length of an adult bed is 190 cm.

But, of course, if you are making a bed for a two-meter guest, the length will need to be increased.

  1. Choose 2 bars without knots, chips or cracks.
  2. Cut with a margin of 15 cm on each side (that is, for a bed 190 cm long, bars 220 cm long will be needed).
  3. Sand them down with sandpaper.
  4. Slightly round the ends so that there are no splinters, burrs.
  5. Cut out a rectangle from the fabric, the length of which is 190 cm plus fold allowances, and the width is twice the width of the bed, plus allowances, plus about 15 cm for natural sagging.
  6. Overcast the edges to the width.
  7. Fold the fabric in half crosswise and sew it into a cylinder.
  8. Turn inside out - the seam should be inside at the bottom of the bed.

Important! If you do not have a single piece of fabric of such a large size, you can make a bed from separate patches, but first you need to sew them into a rectangle, and only then cut the part for the clamshell.

Making goats

They are not much different from the goats on which the log is placed when sawing, well, except perhaps in a smaller size:

  1. From a bar of the same section that was used for load-bearing structures bed, we make 4 identical legs 70 cm long.
  2. On the wide side, find the middle of each of them.
  3. Drill holes for the bolts.
  4. Connect the legs in pairs with bolts, temporarily securing with 1 nut.
  5. Cut 2 bars 190 cm long.
  6. Attach them in pairs to the lower parts of the legs of the crosses, 1 on each side, stepping back 20 cm from the ends - the bars should go parallel to the bed and connect the legs in pairs: they must be fixed with screws.

Assembly preparation

The next step is to put the pieces together. This will require a fairly large space:

  1. Lay out the bed on a flat surface.
  2. Insert the longitudinal rails of the bed into it.
  3. Straighten the fabric and spread the slats.
  4. Fix them temporarily in any convenient way.
  5. Take crosses with rails screwed to them.
  6. Install them so that the rails connecting the crosses are parallel to the longitudinal rails of the bed, and the angle formed by the legs of the crosses facing the stock is slightly more than 90 °.
  7. Using a ruler and a square, determine the length of the elements of the crosses facing the bed so that they are connected to the bed rails end-to-end.
  8. Mark the lines on the legs where they need to be sawn off to ensure they adhere to the bed rails.

Assembly

A wooden folding bed with your own hands is almost ready - it's time to start final assembly. Before final stage the fabric should be stretched over the longitudinal bars of the bed:

  1. Attach the crosses to the longitudinal elements of the bed, first on one side, then on the other with screws.
  2. Put the structure on the legs, which should be moved apart.
  3. Fasten the fabric to prevent it from slipping along the structure on the longitudinal rails, for which it is best to use wallpaper nails or screws with washers.
  4. The lower parts of the legs can be filed so that they are parallel to the floor.
  5. Check the strength of the structure - when a person lies on it, the bed should be level, without swaying.

Important! Under the weight of a person lying on a bed, the crosses should try to move apart - then everything is assembled correctly.

With removable legs

The described model simply folds in half. But if necessary, you can make the bed removable. The structure does not change. Just bars connecting the crosses, in this case we fix by inserting U-shaped metal brackets screwed to the legs of the crosses with screws.

To prevent the rails from slipping out of the mount, you can make through holes passing through the brackets and through both rails. For example, thick nails are inserted into these holes.

In order for the bed to be removable, the crosses are attached to it with the help of metal brackets attached to the rails of the bed from the outside. In this case, the bars of the bed rest on stops in the form of wooden bars, fixed with screws on the inside of the legs of the crosses.

Important! In order not to confuse the legs during assembly or disassembly, you can use color marking.

wooden bed

You can make a folding bed from a single piece of wood or chipboard, and with a headrest. For this you need:

  • bars of the same section as in the previous case;
  • thick plywood, wooden shield or chipboard according to the size of the bed;
  • lifting mechanism (step);
  • door hinges for cabinets.

The main manufacturing steps will be the same as in the previous case, only, of course, no fabric needs to be stretched anywhere. First you need to saw off a piece of chipboard for the headrest:

  1. Sand down all the details.
  2. Saturate the bars with stain and varnish - it is not necessary to do this with a bed.
  3. Make goats, as described in the previous case, and fix a bed on them.
  4. Attach the headrest with several door hinges(you need at least two, but 3 or 4 is better).
  5. Attach a step-by-step lifting mechanism to the side bars of the bed and the headrest (a strip or a half-ring with notches is attached to the headrest, a pin to the bed).

Mattress

For a folding bed made of fabric, a mattress is not needed, but a pillow is needed, since the described design does not have a headrest. However, the bed sags slightly, taking the shape of the body, so it is possible that nothing will be needed under the head. But not everyone can sleep on a wooden bed without a mattress.

You can buy a standard mattress or make your own. Suitable as cover fabric:

In a word, a do-it-yourself clamshell, as well as all the necessary accessories, is quite affordable and even interesting. There are a lot of clamshell designs, and if you wish, you can invent your own.

Have you started a renovation in the most secluded and cozy place in your home - the bedroom? Want to find original solution? Or you just can't find the bed option that's right for you? A sleeping place is a very important aspect, because this is your place of rest.

If you can’t find what you like in any way, then a do-it-yourself sliding bed is a great solution!

Many have faced the problem of acquiring good, reliable and high-quality furniture many times, which is why this issue is so relevant. In the bulk, most stores and online catalogs present very flimsy models that are not original and not interesting in their texture. Therefore, if you decide to make a bed with your own hands, you will ensure yourself high quality, durability of furniture, originality of design and will be able to perfectly fit the bed in all respects so that it is suitable for your bedroom. There is another significant advantage - a do-it-yourself bed will cost you much less than buying a ready-made one.

What should you know before starting work?

Bed size chart.

First of all, decide on the choice of mattress. After all, a do-it-yourself bed is made for a mattress of a certain size. It is better to buy a mattress even before you draft the bed itself. Nowadays, mattress manufacturers offer a wide variety of sizes of their products, so you risk wasting the lion's share of time, effort and money in vain in search of a suitable mattress, making a bed first.

Pay special attention to the choice of materials for the manufacture of the bed frame. Don't skimp on materials! Chipboard and fiberboard, of course, are much cheaper than wood, but you run the risk of waking up every morning not fresh and rested, but with a headache, shortness of breath and many other unpleasant sensations, since these materials contain harmful substances(resin). If you still decide to buy cheaper material, then be sure to ask the seller to present you with an environmental certificate for the products and read it carefully.

Remember that the pull-out bed should not resonate with the overall look and style of the room. Try to think over the project in advance and make any necessary amendments at this stage. If you do not take care of this, the interior of the bedroom will undergo significant changes, perhaps not for the better.

A few words about the design of the future bed

Drawings of a pull-out bed.

The easiest way is to go to several stores before drawing up a project and look at approximate options in order to determine the requirements for a future bed. It is better to do this in a store, and not on the Internet, as you can touch the furniture, evaluate the reliability different designs, take pictures of some particularly vending little things. You can calculate the required amount of materials very easily by downloading special program on the Internet, where it is freely available.

Most best material- this is a tree. You can buy an array or furniture boards from different breeds wood: spruce, pine, oak, ash, larch. Shields are much cheaper than solid wood since they are made from timber. Such a bed will be safe and good in operation. Important point: before shields are made from timber, it is dried, so you will be protected from possible future deformations of the bed. The array may not be very well dried, and after 3-4 months of operation the bed may be deformed.

How to equip a bed?

Retractable niche bed.

Using an electric jigsaw, it is necessary to dissolve the boards 40 cm wide, process the cut with an electric planer. Then remove a small radius on one side on the edge of the board, and grind the surfaces of the boards with a grinder with a sandpaper attachment or with a conventional grinder to give a gloss to the wood. From these boards you will get guides for the backs of furniture. Boards 30 cm wide also need to be dissolved, cut crosswise on them and cut in half to make the legs of the bed.

Holes are made in advance for fastening in the upper part of each future leg. Next, you need to connect the legs and guides of the backs with an overlap. Make it better with glue and screws. After that, the structure (it will look like the letter “P”) must be left for a day in some warm and dry place so that it dries.

At this time, you need to make guides from the tabletops that will connect the backs of the future bed into a single whole. Then make markings and drill holes for self-tapping screws at the ends of the boards.

Pre-make blanks for metal corners with a grinder and drill holes for fasteners. Keep in mind that the head of the screw must be "drowned" in the cavity of the angle. Whether or not to paint these blanks is a matter of taste, since they will not be visible anyway. Mark in advance the places where the corners will be cut in the headboards and on the end boards, and the metal parts should not protrude beyond the material (wood).

How to assemble a frame?

On the inside of the back, it is necessary to fix the bars, on which plywood will then be installed. It is better to strengthen the frame with an additional beam so that there is no sagging of plywood and mattress. The beam is installed along the entire bed and fastened with corners and screws on the end boards.

The plywood must be secured to the rails inside the frame. This will provide not only support for the mattress, but also additional rigidity. Do not forget about ventilation: for this, round holes must be made in the plywood. You can make convenient boxes on wheels in which you can store things. Then you need to connect all the parts with screws and actually lay the mattress on top. If the bed is sliding apart, then install wheels on the bottom of this part to make it more convenient to use the bed.

Finishing the bed depends entirely on your taste preferences and on the overall interior of the room. You can simply varnish or paint it, or you can make a carved back if you have the skills, or attach a mirror to the head of the bed. It all depends on your imagination!

So, everything turned out to be not at all difficult and easily accessible even to non-professionals! A do-it-yourself bed is easy and practical. Have a nice dream in your new place!
