If plaster is used to finish the facade, then its smooth surface, even painted in the original color, may look a little boring.

More original and interesting design will help you make rollers for decorative plaster. Their relief surface will leave a textured pattern on the external wall, but at the same time the entire house will also be reliably protected from large amounts of precipitation and temperature changes by a layer of plaster.

In order to create a decorative finish on the wall, various sponges, stamps, combs and applicators are used, but they can be used if the scale of work is small. A roller allows you to quickly cover a large area. There are several types of textured rollers in the assortment of stores:

  1. According to the material with which the moving cylinder is covered.
  2. Based on the drawings that are created during work.

There are also several ways to apply decorative plaster using a roller. In the first option, a textured roller is passed over the still damp plaster (both painted and regular gray) and the necessary pattern is created, which can be additionally painted. In the second case, the tool is dipped into the solution and the texture is applied to a prepared, flat surface.

What are textured rollers?

If previously paint was applied to a plastered wall with a metal cylinder, now a roller can do various functions. It can be used to apply primer, paint, and even plaster solution, and it will also help you create an original design on a large surface.

Considering all the functionality, rollers for textured plaster are produced from various materials, such as:

  • foam;
  • leather;
  • plastic;
  • tree
  • silicone;
  • textile;
  • rubber;
  • Styrofoam.

Foam tool

If you choose a tool of this type for work, you should know that the foam rubber must have fairly deep pores, and their diameter can vary significantly. With such features, a pattern will remain on the treated surface that will resemble burst bubbles or lunar craters.

Applying decorative plaster with a foam-coated roller should be done easily; you should not put too much pressure on it, because the soft base, shrinking, will smooth out the entire pattern. Also, you cannot use such a tool if plaster with solvents is selected. These components will easily disrupt the structure of the foam rubber and its particles will remain on the surface of the plaster.

In order to apply decorative plaster with a regular foam roller, you can wrap it with ropes of different thicknesses, vegetable netting, or cut out the desired pattern on it. This will be a roller for decorative plaster with your own hands. It will help bring a truly original idea to life.

Fur or fleecy rollers

If fur rollers are used for work, the result is a surface that imitates a “fur coat”. An important point is the length of the villi. If you need a more pronounced effect, you should choose options with long pile. There are different tools on sale, the length of the pile ranges from 2 mm to 25 mm.

Both natural materials (natural fur) and synthetic fibers can be used as material for the manufacture of these rollers. You need to choose such a tool very carefully; the pile should not be pulled out of the base. Otherwise, when applying the pattern, the base will be spoiled by the presence of unwanted fibers.

Leather roller

A leather-coated tool will help make the surface similar to natural stone or marble. It is most often used in conjunction with Venetian plaster.

You should choose a product made from natural material, since synthetic analogues may be of poor quality and can ruin expensive plaster.

Plastic

Textured rollers for decorative plastic plaster are considered the most budget-friendly options.

They may have bulges or depressions on the surface various shapes. This material is not durable; after some time, chips or cracks may appear on the surface of the roller, which will cause defects in the design.

Tree

Textured plaster can also be applied using a wooden roller. This tool can perfectly replace the most popular and durable rubber one. It leaves a high-quality pattern when correct use. Moreover, the tree is quite inert material, and does not interact with chemicals plaster.

Its disadvantage is considered to be hygroscopicity. During operation, it can absorb water from the solution and, as a result, swell. This changes the size of the picture. To eliminate this drawback, you need to pause work and thoroughly dry the instrument.

Rubber roller

This tool is most often used to create complex textures:

  1. Geometric shapes.
  2. Plants.
  3. Animals.
  4. Murals.
  5. Brickwork.

It is used by professionals in their work because the material is durable, easy to care for and convenient to work with.

Styrofoam

This material is just as good as rubber for applying complex textures and patterns. But due to the fact that the material is easily damaged during operation, when processing large surfaces you will need to change the tool several times. If the owner wants to finish a small surface, then this will be an alternative to expensive options.

Operating rules

Before you start decorative finishing walls, you need to prepare the surface. To do this, the walls are cleaned of all contaminants, well primed and leveled. If the base is not even, the design will not be of high quality and uniform, and will not look aesthetically pleasing.

After the leveling layer has dried, you can begin decorative finishing.

  1. A solution of special decorative plaster is made according to the recipe indicated on the package.
  2. Next, the mixture is applied to the wall, up to 5 mm thick.
  3. In order to get a clear drawing, you need to wait a little for the solution to begin to harden on the wall. About 10 minutes will be enough. If you wait longer, then a thicker solution will cling to the tool, and if less, then a clear imprint will not be made on a liquid base. You also need to remember that the plaster has completely hardened. Do not make a large amount of solution. If you don't use it right away, it will harden in the container. And if you apply it all on the wall, then it will not be possible to treat it with a roller. It is better to work in pairs - one applies the plaster, the other works with a roller.
  4. They move from top to bottom.
  5. The embossed plaster roller should not be pressed too hard. Movements should be smooth, sliding.
  6. Each subsequent strip runs close to the previous one. It is not allowed to use a whip, since the drawing will be distorted.
  7. The first few stripes should be checked using a level or plumb line. If they are not even, it is better to redo them right away to get quality result.
  8. If the pattern turns out to be excessively embossed, after drying it can be smoothed out a little using a grater and a sanding mesh.
  9. If the surface area being treated is very large, you need to monitor the condition of the roller, especially if it is made of soft materials. When they wear out they need to be replaced.
  10. After the decorative plaster has completely dried, you can begin painting, if necessary. If paint needs to be applied to protruding parts, use a short-haired roller or brush. If the plaster must be completely painted with a roller, then it is better to use a tool with long pile.

Decorative plaster is a finishing material that is extremely attractive not only in terms of its technical characteristics.

This coating has opened up wide opportunities for both designers and ordinary people who want to give their homes a stylish personality.

Using a roller, you can recreate many types of surfaces.

A textured roller will help to imitate wood, a slab of cut stone, fur, leather, and even animal paw prints if animal motifs can be traced in the interior. This seemingly simple video contains enormous design possibilities. All you need to do is select a roller with the desired texture and master the technique of use.

Rollers differ from other tools for adding texture to plaster primarily in their purpose. Applicators, stamps, sponges, decorative tampons are designed for spot work or decoration of small areas. Using a structural roller for decorative plaster, you can process large surfaces and increase productivity significantly.

All numerous types of rollers can be divided according to two criteria: the type of material from which the working surface is made, and the pattern that they leave on the plaster.

Types of rollers according to working surface material

Foam rubber

Foam rubber for such a roller should have deep pores of various diameters, which, depending on the size, will leave marks on the plaster in the form of burst bubbles or “moon craters.”

There is no need to press the roller with force, otherwise the plaster will lie in a regular, even layer, without any relief.

You should also pay attention to the following points:

  • Decorative plaster should be finely dispersed.

Embossed does not cope with the stretching of large particles, and the effect of the desired surface is blurred

  • You cannot work with plaster containing solvents.

These substances easily dissolve foam rubber, fragments remain on the surface, creating an unesthetic appearance.

Foam

A cheaper analogue of a rubber roller. With its help you can also work with various types plaster and recreate many patterns, but such a roller will not last long.

Polystyrene foam is a fragile material that is prone to deformation, so such a roller will have to be changed more than once during the work.

Additionally, patterns on foam tend to flatten, creating a pattern that is not what you'd expect.

As an option, you can use a foam roller with a flat surface, but, unfortunately, it is not able to give the plaster an interesting texture.

Rubber

The most preferred tool option. On the flat surface of the roller there are protrusions or indentations that create a pattern.

Suitable for creating a clearly defined texture: brickwork, painting, patterns of various types.

In some cases, the plaster may stick to the surface of the roller. To avoid this, it is recommended to wet the roller in a soap solution, but it is unknown how such manipulations will affect the appearance of the final coating.

Leather

A roller with a leather surface can create one of the most commonly used effects - a marble surface. Due to its elasticity, the skin creates beautiful marble “stains”.

Most often, this tool is used to work with Venetian plaster.

The choice of roller must be approached carefully: it is better to use natural leather.

Artificial material can only cause disappointment, since low-quality leather will, at best, slide over the plaster without leaving any marks, and at worst, it will dissolve and ruin expensive plaster.

Wooden

One of the simplest rollers, which has all the advantages of rubber. However, such a tool additionally guarantees the environmental friendliness of the coating, because the wood will not enter into a spontaneous chemical reaction with the ingredients in the plaster. Therefore, wooden rollers are often used to decorate walls in children's rooms.

However, over time, wood can absorb water from the plaster and swell. At the same time, the picture becomes less clear. The fix is simple: just dry the roller and it will be ready for further work.

Plastic

A plastic roller is positioned as a cheaper analogue of a rubber roller. Allows you to create a variety of textures and patterns. On sale you can find plastic rollers with holes and holes for creating bulges on the wall. This version of the surface is non-trivial.

The disadvantages of this material include the fact that over time the plastic becomes deformed, becomes covered with cracks and chips, which does not have the best effect on the final result.

fleecy

Creates the effect of a “fur” wall. The pile material is varied - from natural fur to polyamide threads. The length of the pile varies from 2 to 25 mm. The longer the pile, the more “shaggy” the wall will be.

When purchasing, you should be careful and check the quality of attachment of the pile to the moving cylinder.

A low-quality roller will ruin the surface, littering it with loose fibers.

Types of rollers according to the final texture

The texture of the rollers can be completely varied and imitate brick, marble, wood, textiles, fur and even more complex patterns (braids, oriental patterns, waves, etc.)

Each of them allows you to create a specific surface. The richer the final texture should be, the deeper the pattern is cut on the roller.

It is worth noting that for each room it is necessary to choose its own wall texture and, accordingly, its own type of roller.

Imitation brickwork will look good in the hallway or work area kitchen, but completely out of place in the bedroom. Therefore, a roller with replaceable attachments would be a very convenient option.

DIY roller for decorative plaster

Despite a more than wide range of factory-made rollers on sale, many prefer to make the tool themselves.

There may be several reasons for this: the desire to save money, which was already spent on repairs a lot, or the lack of availability of a roller with the desired pattern, or the desire to give the interior individuality with exclusive wall texture.

Whatever the reason, you can make a structural roller yourself in several ways:

  1. To imitate brickwork, a foam roller is used as a basis. Using an ordinary stationery knife, recesses are cut out in the shape of bricks. It is a mistake to cut out the bricks themselves, since after smoothing the plaster they will not be convex, but pressed into the wall, which will deprive the imitation of realism.
  1. In order to reproduce a textile fabric, there is nothing better than the textile itself. A regular foam roller needs to be wrapped with a tape made of canvas fabric with a rough texture and secured with threads.
  1. To imitate a marble surface, a plastic roller lined with a piece of genuine leather is ideal. It is better to sew casually, with folds.
  1. To give the surface the effect of a natural board, you need to wrap a plastic roller with a narrow piece of dense textile or cover it with crinkled fabric.
  1. To create a specific pattern, it can be cut out on the surface of the auxiliary roller. Foam or foam rubber is best suited for these purposes. It is worth considering that the foam rubber must be hard.

In some cases, various massage rollers and kitchen utensils (rolling pins, etc.) were used as a textured roller.

Roller technique for decorative plaster

In order for the final texture to meet expectations, the roller should be worked in compliance with a certain technology:

  • movement should go from bottom to top, chaotic movements should not be allowed, otherwise the structure will not be clearly defined;
  • for the same reason, the strips drawn with a roller should be located close to each other, but not overlapping;
  • the first stripes must be drawn using a building level, otherwise there is a chance that they will “fill up” relative to the floor and ceiling;
  • work must be carried out taking into account the drying time of the plaster. Even slightly dried, it becomes much less plastic. It may be worth applying decorative plaster with a roller in fragments, then working the surface with a roller and only then proceeding to the next section of the wall;
  • The rollers are subject to wear. In case of long-term work with a roller made of short-lived material, it must be replaced on time.

The structural roller is one of those tools that, in its simple design, contains a wide range of possibilities. To obtain the desired structure of decorative plaster, you just need to use a high-quality roller and follow the technology.

In the old days, plaster was used only as a base for paint. The walls were decorated with paint. But progress does not stand still, and today it is fashionable to cover walls with decorative plaster. The process of creating a surface using such plaster is not difficult.

If you strictly follow the technology and use structural rollers, you can do decorative plaster with your own hands. If previously only fur rollers for painting work were used as a tool, today rollers for decorative plaster have appeared, with which you can create walls with different textures.

Textured rollers, which are now used for decorative plaster, appeared here thanks to Europe. It was there that they began to be used to create three-dimensional images on plaster, reminiscent of plaster stucco. With their help, various textures with volume and depth are created.

A roller is a tool that consists of a handle on which a coated cylinder is attached. The cylinder can have a plastic, silicone, metal or rubber base. Fabric or foam rubber can be used as a covering.

There are leather textured rollers and piece-made wooden ones. Rollers for decorative plaster can have different widths and are used depending on the tasks that need to be solved.

On a textured rubber roller, the pattern is closed on the surface of the cylinder. At one time, these rollers were used to apply paintable impressions on wallpaper.

Later they began to produce wallpaper with ready-made designs, so this tool was no longer needed. With the advent of decorative plaster, demand for them has reappeared.

True, they cannot be used for applying a textured pattern due to uneven application, since the pattern on them is not clearly expressed.

But they are good to use for applying a design to the finished surface, when the plaster dries a little, about 20 minutes after applying the coating.

In order for the drawing to print well, you must follow some rules. Movements should be uniform and directed from top to bottom.

Each subsequent strip must begin from the place where the previous one ended so that the drawing is not interrupted.

Imitation of various surfaces

Using textured rollers you can create a marbled texture, brickwork, various floral ornaments, abstraction, etc., for this you just need to select the right tool. Therefore, you need to figure out how the appearance of the surface of decorative plaster will change from the selected relief roller:

  • a roller covered with lint creates a fur-imitation surface. The shorter the pile, the smoother the surface will be. If the plaster is applied to brick or concrete, it is better to use a roller with a pile of at least 1.8 cm;
  • if it is necessary to obtain a three-dimensional pattern that will protrude above the surface, then the pattern on the cylinder should be pressed in, applied in the form of indentations;
  • if you need to get an extruded pattern on the wall, then the working surface of the cylinder should have a convex image;
  • to create a longitudinal texture, patterns in the form of waves are applied to the cylinders; there is a wide variety of such patterns;
  • The imitation of natural stone is created by a roller with loops in the form of ears applied to it.

To get an imitation of brickwork, you need to apply channels on a rubber roller that has a flat surface that will divide the surface of the cylinder into three equal parts. Then, to obtain an imitation of one brick, transverse notches are made in a checkerboard pattern.

If you take a roller with a nozzle made of crinkled fabric or leather, the plaster will look like a marble surface. When applying a drawing, you should move evenly over the surface, trying not to tear yourself away from it as long as possible.

You can get an imitation of wood fibers by winding a rubber cord around a rubber roller, winding the turns in different directions. By changing the direction of the turns, you can get different patterns.

Implementation of textured cladding

Currently, construction stores offer a wide selection of different tools for applying decorative plaster; they differ in the material used and the clearly applied pattern.

Applying a certain pattern to plaster is a creative process, so it’s always nice to do something yourself and realize your fantasies in the form of unique patterns.

To implement this idea, you need to prepare a rubber roller, a piece of rubber a centimeter thick. You can use ordinary erasers, but this is in case there is no rubber. In addition, you will need a special glue for gluing rubber products.

Various figures and patterns are cut out from prepared rubber or erasers. For example, you can cut out a shape in the shape of a plant leaf.

These figures are glued to the roller, taking into account that there will be a continuation of the drawing. As a continuation, you can cut out a flower and glue it next to the leaf, this way you can create any ornament by adding stems. It is important that the design is applied continuously over the entire surface from edge to edge. The machines, which consist of a roller and a metal rod, are available in different sizes:

  • short up to 30 cm;
  • average from 30 to 50 cm;
  • long over 50 cm.

For ease of use, tools are manufactured with long handles from 70 cm to 4 meters.

To ensure a high-quality drawing, it is better to round the edges of the rubber figures. In this case, the glued figures will sink into the plaster smoothly and will not spoil the applied pattern with sharp edges.

You should not apply a pattern to a surface that has just been covered with plaster, as the liquid solution will clog into narrow cracks and remain on the roller. Therefore, it is better to wait 10 minutes (depending on the decorative plaster used) so that the solution dries a little.

You can cut out any patterns on a foam roller; this is a rather labor-intensive process, but the result is impressive.

An interesting texture is obtained by wrapping the roller overlapping with rope or thin cord. You can get a unique pattern on the plaster if you wrap the cylinder with a plastic bag or regular vegetable net.

Technique for applying cladding and design

For application finishing material the surface must be prepared. Clean it from the previous coating. Then it should be primed, preferably with a deep penetration primer.

If it is intended to apply two layers of plaster of the same shade of different saturation, then first the surface is leveled and the first layer of the desired color is applied.

Next, a decorative layer is applied. If there is a need to emphasize the exact boundaries between layers, you can use masking tape. Before applying a layer of decorative plaster, the composition should be well tinted and brought to the required consistency.

Plaster application technique

Apply layers with smooth movements directed from top to bottom.

When working with a roller, in order for the design to be applied efficiently, the following rules must be observed:

  • Do not put too much pressure on the roller when working, as this will interfere with the creation of a textured and voluminous pattern;
  • movements should be smooth and sliding;
  • if desired, the protruding parts can be coated with acrylic paint. Depending on the color range used in the interior, you can cover the depressions or protruding parts with gold or silver paint. It is best to apply acrylic paint when the plaster is completely dry after about 48 hours.

The process of obtaining different designs can be a lot of fun, because thanks to this you can decorate the walls so that the room will have its own individual style. You can involve the whole family in this process so that everyone can show their imagination and contribute to the design of the room.

To create a picturesque finish on a small scale of work, all kinds of sponges, combs and other devices are usually used. In cases where large areas need to be treated, the plaster is applied using rollers, which reduces the time required to complete this procedure. This tool can be purchased at a hardware store or made with your own hands at home.

Specifics of textured rollers

High-quality finishing gives the room an unusual and stylish look; these days, among the large number of materials, decorative plastering of walls or coating them with paint stands out. For this purpose, professionals use a variety of means, but structural rollers are especially popular.

When working with them, it is not necessary to have certain skills and craftsmanship; even using this method for the first time, you can get quite a decent result. Tools have certain qualities, advantages and differ in their types.

Design Features

Rollers for painting walls have a very simple design; they can be made from a variety of different materials, their cylinders are secured to the handle by means of a metal rod. With the help of these devices, complex ornaments and original designs are created that can decorate not only classic, but also modern interior.The tool includes the following components:

  1. 1. Clasp, which is a supporting element and is the basis of the roller. It has a curved configuration, thanks to which a kind of cylinder is fixed on one side, and a handle on the other, which gives the instrument integrity.
  2. 2. A handle that is held in the hand during work, usually made of rubber, plastic or wood. To make it comfortable to hold and prevent slipping, the part has special grooves.
  3. 3. Roller, which is main part roller and made in the form of a cylinder. It is located on the side of the clasp, opposite the handle, and has the ability to rotate with ease. For its production, plastic or metal is mostly used.
  4. 4. A coat placed on top of the roller and intended for direct application of paints and varnishes. It is made of velor, foam rubber or fur.

This simple design improves productivity and reduces paint consumption. When working with this kind of tool, there are practically no streaks or splashes, and the end result is much more effective than when painting with an ordinary paint brush.

Types by material of manufacture

Rollers differ from other devices that create texture on plaster in their purpose. Using applicators, decorative tampons, sponges and stamps, spot work or decoration of small areas is performed. The structure roller is designed for processing large areas of the surface.

There are many types of these instruments. But they are all divided into two categories: according to the pattern created on the plaster and according to the material with which the surface of the driving cylinder is covered. They also differ from each other in the width of the roller.

Foam rubber

When choosing a tool of this type, you need to know that the foam rubber must have pores of sufficient depth and different diameters. These features allow you to leave a pattern on the treated surface that is similar to craters on the Moon and burst bubbles.

When applying decorative plaster with a roller with such a coating, this should be done easily, without pressing on the device, which will prevent the soft texture from compressing, resulting in a smoothing of the pattern. It is important to remember that upon contact with solvents, the structure of polyurethane foam is easily destroyed, so you should not choose types of plasters containing such substances to work with it.

Experts advise, before applying decorative plaster, to wrap the foam cylinder with ropes different thickness, a vegetable net or simply cut out a pattern on it. Such a solution will make it possible to implement very original ideas.

Fur (pile)

To make the fur coat of such rollers, natural or synthetic fur, such as polyamide or acrylic, is used. Its pile has different lengths (from two to twenty-five millimeters), on which the relief depends - the longer it is, the more lumpy the surface will be. When purchasing these tools, you need to pay special attention to the quality of the pile. If it crumbles, the bristles will remain on the plaster, thereby damaging the appearance of the coating.

Leather

Rollers with this structure make it possible to create surfaces identical to marble or natural stone. In work, they are usually used to apply Venetian plaster to the wall.

Plastic

Rollers made from this material can be called the most budget models. The options for their surfaces are very diverse, since concavity and convexity have all sorts of shapes.

The disadvantage of such material is its fragility. During use, cracks and chips appear on them, which affect Negative influence on the quality of the drawing.

Wooden

When applying decorative plaster, you can use wooden rollers. In terms of functionality, this tool is superior to even the most common rubber analogue due to its ease of use, since the degree of adhesion of the plaster to the surface of the material is much less.

When using this tool, following all the rules, you can get a very high-quality result. In addition, due to its environmental friendliness, wood is not capable of entering into a chemical reaction with the composition of the plaster. This property is very important when carrying out finishing works in areas for children. The disadvantage of wooden rollers is their ability to swell due to prolonged contact with water, which affects the size of the design. To prevent this from happening, it is recommended to carefully rinse and dry the instrument after each use.

Rubber

All kinds of recesses and convexities located on the roller of such a device allow you to create the most complex textures on the surface. These can be animals, plants, geometric shapes, paintings and even brickwork.

Typically, rubber rollers are used by professionals. This is due to the fact that when working with such a tool, certain skills are required.

From foam plastic

When it comes to applying intricate patterns and complex textures, this material is absolutely not inferior to rubber. However, due to its ability to be easily damaged when machining large surfaces, repeated tool replacement will be required. More the best option for foam rollers will work in small areas.

Operating principles

According to the texture of the finished pattern, rollers are divided into textured and textured (structural) types with the corresponding name. The former transfer natural materials to the surface, while the latter are capable of applying complex patterns. Before you start painting walls with a textured roller, you should carefully study all the intricacies of this process. There are a number of certain rules, following which you can achieve an amazing effect:

  • It is recommended to start painting from the corner of the room located near the window;
  • for paint, you need to purchase a special tray with grooves, the size of which will allow you to comfortably dip the roller;
  • after applying the first layer, you need to wait for it to dry completely, then you can start applying the second;
  • When painting a wall, paint should be applied from bottom to top and then in the opposite direction.

Working with texture rollers requires mandatory adherence to all technologies and time intervals necessary for drying the materials.

DIY methods

It's no secret that many finishing tools are expensive. Therefore, making them with your own hands will be budget option allowing for significant savings.

Experts say that in order to construct a textured roller with your own hands, it does not require much effort and time. The main thing in this process will be imagination and patience. There are several ways to carry out such an undertaking, which will require an old and broken tool.

Based on worn fixture

To do this, you need to find an old roller made of any material and of any size. The main thing is that the tool retains its handle. The remaining elements for its configuration can be easily found in every home.

To do this, you will need a little dense fabric to form figures from it; you can also twist all kinds of flaps from its segments, reminiscent of your appearance origami. All prepared elements are attached to the roller using pins or a special stapler.

Using a rope

In order to make a roller, you need to find a clothesline or similar cord and wind it around old design. The density of the pattern will directly depend on the frequency of the wound cord.

Winding can be carried out using various methods and intersections, as a result of which an original pattern is formed. Before starting work with a roller of your own making, you need to check its performance on a sheet of plywood.

Using a knife and foam rubber

In the case when from finishing work The roller with the foam cylinder remains in satisfactory condition; it can be made the basis of a textured tool. To do this, various geometric shapes of any size are cut out with a knife with a sharpened blade. But it should be remembered that the size of the texture of the picture will correspond to the dimensions of these figures.

The same method can be used to process foam plastic tools. If you have a product made of foam rubber, you can re-tighten it with a thread, thereby promoting the formation of wrinkles on the surface of the fur coat.

By means of a plastic bag

This method is one of the simplest and least expensive. To do this, you will need to secure the crumpled bag on the old roller with tape. The result is a complex and unique pattern consisting of relief stripes.

In addition to the bag, you can use hair bands, thick paper, pieces of fabric or vegetable netting. All of these simple items are perfect for making your own texture roller.

From a rubber tool

A device for painting walls can be built using an old rubber roller. To do this, first the desired pattern is applied to it using copy paper, and then cut out with a knife. For this purpose, it is allowed to use ordinary rubber having a thickness of five millimeters.

It is necessary to ensure that the pattern on the roller is a single whole and has wavy lines. At the end of the work, the rubber with the prepared relief is attached to the workpiece.

From foil

To make a textured device you will need thick foil, a crochet hook and acrylic putty. First of all, the foil is cleaned of possible contaminants of various origins. Then a pattern is applied to it, which will later be transferred to the surface to be painted.

Using a crochet hook or a similar object of a similar shape, three-dimensional designs are extruded onto the foil, according to the previously drawn lines. There must be the necessary intervals between the relief strokes, otherwise the pattern will turn out blurry; the ideal value in this case is five millimeters. Acrylic putty is applied to the back of the roller, and after it dries, foil is glued to the tool.

Made of silicone sealant and rubber

This option requires a sheet of thin rubber, a marker and silicone sealant. First, the rubber surface is cleaned and degreased. Then the desired design is applied to it using a pencil or marker and, according to the resulting markings, sealant is applied.

For this method, the best image of waves or simple geometric shapes. When making such a roller, you can use interestingly embossed buttons, plaster objects or artificial leaves. The selected element is coated vegetable oil, the rubber is covered with a layer of silicone sealant, and then an impression is made. After the sealant has dried, the rubber is glued to the roller.

Having available materials at home, you can create rollers for decorative plaster and realize almost all the planned surface structure options.

Textured surface finishing is one of the possibilities to add individuality to the interior design. It is performed with special painting tools - textured and textured rollers, with which you can decorate the walls with artistic paintings or create interesting decorative effects on them.

The quality of this type of finishing depends on how carefully the base was prepared, the coating technology was followed, and the roller itself was chosen correctly. Let's look at the types of embossed painting tools and how to use them.

Features of application

There are two ways to use a roller to decorate surfaces.

  • In the first case, it is used as a tool to stamp various designs: from the simplest to the most complex fantasy ones, similar to how, when sticking wallpaper, the canvases are joined to each other to continue the pattern. The roller can be pressed with different forces, resulting in a more or less pronounced relief.

  • In the second case, using a rough roller or a tool with a patterned coat on the wall, they imitate the texture of various materials: brick, wood, marble or stone, and also make glazing - spectacular blurry spots.

To create a designer wall decoration, you can purchase a ready-made decorative roller or build it yourself. So that you can better navigate the range of textured painting tools, let’s take a closer look at their varieties.

Kinds

The design of a standard roller includes a metal holder rod with a cylinder and a handle. The bases of the cylinder can be metal, plastic, rubber. Structural patterns with a pattern include a rotating cylinder that collects the coloring composition, in combination with a rubber nozzle, on the surface of which a pattern is carved to create impressions. The main difference between paint rollers is the coating of the cylinder.

Materials

The production of coatings for cylinders is carried out various materials, depending on what it can be:

  • Rubber or silicone with many notches and protrusions various sizes, due to which a variety of decorative effects are created, imitating brickwork or relief with a pattern.
  • Foam rubber who are comfortable working with water-dispersion paints and painting small areas. Its disadvantages include poor painting of uneven surfaces, the formation of splashes when pressed intensely, and fragility.

  • Foam- This is a cheap analogue of a rubber roller. The downside of foam plastic is its susceptibility to mechanical stress, so such a tool will need to be repeatedly replaced with a new one during operation.
  • Leather– with its help you can achieve a very beautiful effect that imitates a marble coating. Venetian plaster is best applied with a natural leather roller, as it copes perfectly with this task.
  • Wooden– since wood is an environmentally friendly material, it is advisable to use such rollers for decorating children’s rooms. They allow you to obtain a beautiful convex ornament on a surface treated with paint.

  • Plastic– when using it, the decorative mixture will lie as it should only on an absolutely smooth surface, so it is impossible to do without careful preparation of the base. In addition, plastic is prone to cracking due to prolonged use.
  • Fleecy (fur)– both natural and artificial fur can be used as a covering – polyacrylic and polyamide, which have different lengths of fibers. The degree of roughness and depth of patterned inclusions on the treated surface depends on the length of the threads.

Invoices

Decorative rollers are distinguished by a variety of structures, due to which the final ornaments are obtained. The purpose of some tools is to imitate the texture of natural materials, while others are to simply create an arbitrary pattern.

According to the method of application they are:

  • Textured products. For their manufacture, hard or soft rubber is used. When a damp plastered surface is rolled with such a tool, it acquires relief. Using rollers with different patterns or just a rough cylinder, you can get the texture of a variety of materials from fur and wood to textiles and stone chips and even bamboo fiber. A fur coat provides the effect of multidirectional fibers, imitating a natural stone allows a roller with a rubber coating, where a special looped pattern is cut out, and the sponge tool leaves traces of bubbles.

  • Structural adaptations. With their help, a complex repeating pattern is applied to the plaster, which is exactly what a roller with a stencil is designed for. A special feature of use is the application finishing coating on an already finished surface, for example, a painted or evenly plastered wall. Decoration begins when the surface is completely dry. The most beautiful ornament is obtained if you use a figured roller with a certain pattern.

Effects

Decorative surface finishing offers endless possibilities for creativity. Of course, for these purposes the easiest way is to use ready-made textured design rollers, which will be ideal assistants for creating all sorts of complex and very beautiful decorative effects:

  • “Diagonal” is an unusual abstract pattern of slanted lines.
  • “Blots” are picturesque spots with arbitrary outlines, reminiscent of spreading drops of liquid.
  • “Rain” - despite the name, due to the presence of chaotic lines and branching patterns on the cylinder, visually this effect looks like a bizarre floral pattern.

  • “Frosty morning” is an original ornament reminiscent of the pattern of frost remaining on the glass in winter in frosty weather.
  • “Rhinestones” are a symmetrical pattern of large imitations of precious stones arranged in rows.
  • “Blossoming meadow” is a spectacular fantasy floral ornament.

No less beautiful effects are obtained when using rollers in combination with other tools for decorative and finishing work. For example, to decorate a wall with a cute polka dot pattern, a standard roller is used together with a stencil - purchased or made independently from thin plastic.

To create a “bamboo” effect, the base is covered with a white decorative mixture using a trowel. It is also used to form a background pattern. While the base layer is not dry, use a trowel or spatula to create a pattern imitating bamboo shoots. Then the wall is treated with decorative wax using a paint roller. And at the end they place accents with decorative varnish silver color to give the drawing more expressiveness.

Glazing - blurred spots of deep shades, characterized by saturation, is done by painting the wall with a base color and winding a chaotic pattern with dry or wet cloth or cellophane. To create original textures, you can use a sponge to create a soft spotted pattern or a brush for spectacular splashes.

An interesting effect is obtained from arbitrary prints of your own palms on the wall.

How to choose?

Variety of painting tools for decorative painting can complicate the choice of roller. To avoid mistakes when purchasing, we suggest using tips from craftsmen who have been engaged in decorative and finishing work for many years.

What should be done:

  • Check the quality of the working part of the roller and its resistance to deformation. To do this, you need to noticeably crumple the fur coat, and then assess the condition. Severe dents on the fur coat are a reason to refuse to purchase such a roller.

  • When choosing a long-nap roller, you need to visual inspection coats for loose fibers that will definitely stick to the painted wall, which looks unattractive.
  • Make sure that the clasp - the bracket that acts as the basis of the tool - is reliable. Soft clasps deform faster, which not only shortens the service life of the roller, but also negatively affects the quality of the finish.

For painting walls, a product with a standard short handle is quite suitable, while for finishing the ceiling it is worth purchasing a tool with a special telescopic handle.

What to look for when purchasing:

  • Structural rubber roller - in this case it is important to evaluate the quality of the rubber and the operation of the cylinder. Good tool has an elastic coating and an easily scrolling, non-vibrating roller. Optimal solution to create the perfect pattern - a tool that has a lubricating cylinder and a hopper, which allows you to draw the entire pattern without having to stop to saturate the fur coat with paint;
  • A textured tool with a foam rubber coat - here you need to make sure that the selected sponge coating has pores of the required diameter to obtain the decorative effect of burst bubbles or lunar craters;

  • Leather embossed roller - since it is used primarily for working with Venetian plaster, try to consider only those products that have a natural leather covering. Using devices made from synthetic analogues, it is impossible to make prints on a plastered base - one, and they can dissolve - two;
  • Pile roller - here you need to be guided by the length of the piles, which ranges from 0.2 cm to 2.5 cm. The effect of a strong “shaggy” wall is created with a long-pile roller;
  • Pattern tool – great importance has a figured stamp design: the most beautiful ornaments are obtained thanks to the combination of thin lines and bridges present in the pattern.

You can buy a stencil or texture roller or make your own. The usual painting tool is equipped with a homemade cloth, suede, paper or sponge coat, securely fixing it with threads. This device is good for applying chaotic spotted patterns.

Surface preparation

Painting walls is a type of finishing work that anyone can master, the main thing is to properly prepare the surface. If you neglect the pre-treatment of the walls, then you can’t count on the quality and durability of the finish.

Work order:

  • Clean the surface from old coating, for example, wallpaper.
  • Smooth out unevenness in plaster or concrete base sander.
  • Prime the wall and seal cracks, sinkholes, and chips with a plaster mixture.

  • Level the base with finishing putty and sand.
  • Dust the surface with a vacuum cleaner or grass brush.
  • Re-treat the base with primer to increase adhesion to the decorative coating and reduce its consumption.

When the wall is completely dry, you can start decorating.

Applying paint

For many beginners just entering the world of renovation, it seems that using a paint roller, given its simple design, is as easy as shelling pears. However, working with paint and varnish materials(LMB) requires some knowledge, without which perfect finishing, alas, is impossible.

So, first, paint the corners using a brush or corner roller. The paintwork materials are thoroughly mixed with a construction mixer at low power. Fill the ditch with paint and roll the roller in it with back-and-forth movements so that the coat properly picks up the paint. At the end, a tool is passed along the inclined corrugated base of the ditch to remove excess coloring composition and distribute it evenly over the working part of the roller - the fur coat.

To determine the area of coverage of the working surface with the amount of paint that the roller absorbed at a time, you need to roll out the paintwork on the wall to make a square. In your mind you need to break it down into several strips, focusing on the width of the fur coat. Let's assume that we are dealing with five stripes.
