The power of mechanisms

Steampunk is a new trend in design. This style is not yet very well known and not very widespread, but the ranks of its admirers are growing day by day. The features of steampunk can be traced in the art of the entire 20th century, but it was not until the late 80s that it had a name. Next, the characteristics of this current were determined and systematized. They started talking about him, they began to pay attention to him, he had an army of fans. A new style emerged. However, as everyone knows very well, the new is the well-forgotten old. Steampunk was born not born, but reborn.

Steampunk - retro futuristic style. Someone will say: yes, this is a combination of the incongruous! Either it's retro with pictures of the past, or it's a look into a fantastic future. Can these two worlds become one? They can, and an example of this is steampunk!

The retro component of steampunk is a stylization of the Victorian era, an imitation of the reality of the second half of the 19th century. Futurism lies in fantasies about the development of so-called steam technologies. What would the world look like if the steam engine remained the main one?

Steampunk is pictures of a fantastic future from the point of view of a representative of the Victorian era. The people of the 19th century saw prospects not in electronics, but in mechanics. Therefore, their imaginary robots are, in fact, large clockwork toys. The vehicles of the future are advanced airships, airplanes, steam locomotives and fast cars powered by steam and electronic engines.

Steampunk reflects an alternative future - the way a man from the 19th century saw it.

The main characteristics of steampunk: sci-fi, urban, industrial, combining retro and futurism.

Sources of inspiration: industrial revolution of the 19th century, pictures of an industrial city, works of science fiction of that time. First of all, these are books by Jules Verne with his love for various kinds of mechanisms.

Steampunk style in details and materials

Materials: steel, copper, brass, bronze, darkened wood, brick, leather.

Key: sepia, soot, smoke, smog.

Details: gears, levers, springs, rollers, cylinders, etc. Objects resembling an airship, a car, a steam locomotive.

Steampunk style in art

The time of action in the works can be both the 19th century and the present day. Or even the distant future. After all, the main thing is the characteristic atmosphere and mechanisms.

It is believed that the first striking examples of steampunk (or retrofuturism) were the films Metropolis in 1927 and Brazil in 1985. Just shortly after "Brazil", the current got a name. But whether these films specifically relate to steampunk is an open question for many. Be that as it may, the style itself became more and more popular.

A considerable number of new films reproduce the atmosphere of steampunk: for example, The Prestige (2006), Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes, Around the World in 80 Days (2004). The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003). In some steampunk films, only the entourage (urbanism, gloom, smoke, steam engines), while others focus on technology, including fantastic ones.

From computer games the so-called quests based on riddles and puzzles with various details and mechanisms stand out. Luxurious representative of the steampunk style - legendary game "Siberia", created by the famous Benoit Sokal. There is a lot from steampunk here: the gloom of the atmosphere, the effect of soot, mechanical toys and robots, a real clockwork train. Artist Sokal combined art nouveau and steampunk styles in the game, because at the end of the Victorian era, art nouveau was just coming into vogue. The result of the combination of these styles is a magnificent fantasy world, addictive and exciting.

Steampunk has also found expression in fashion. Many admirers of vintage outfits found themselves in the ranks of adherents of this style. Crinolines, corsages, top hats, leather and suede jackets and pants, studded belts, long gloves, retro goggles for driving - it's all steampunk. Toilets are complemented by many details, such as rivets, buttons, zippers, belt fasteners, pockets, metal spikes and decorative overlays.

Steampunk style in the interior

Steampunk interiors- brutal, youth, conceptual. Steampunk décor is most suitable for decorating boys' rooms, bachelor's quarters and apartments of young couples who are passionate about retro fantasy.

steampunk colors

Steampunk is accompanied by soot and smoke, so the colors are mostly dark: gray, black, dirty brick, rusty. The use of other colors, of course, is not forbidden, but it is preferable that they be smoky shades: not blue, but smoky blue, not, but "Mounbatten". The presence of the color of steel, copper, brass or bronze is desirable.

Steampunk in the interior: materials

Most suitable species finishing - this, board, saving "naked" concrete wall, rough plaster, stone, floor tiles with imitation of cobblestone pavement. This urban set can be spruced up with checkered, striped, or gear-and-spring-like wallpaper.

If art nouveau and steampunk styles are combined, the place will be luxuriously finished with wood paneling and parquet.

Steampunk furniture

Sofas, armchairs, chairs - leather, including those with rivets. Elements in the Victorian style will fit in perfectly - for example, leather, wooden bureau, etc.

Many pieces of furniture can be forged: tables, chairs, beds. An iron cabinet will be a good purchase for an interior in the steampunk style. Kitchen set can be covered with steel lined. Radial facades also emphasize the futurism of the chosen direction.

In steampunk interiors, riveted furniture (wooden, leather or wicker) looks authentic, as well as items in colonial style. Accessories - colors of brass, copper, bronze.

Steampunk decor

One of the main symbols of steampunk and the main element of decoration- it's a gear. She is present everywhere. Walls, furniture and decor items are decorated with decorative gears. They also create original panels.

Elements that repeat the shape of an airship are typical: it can be a ceiling structure, lamps, and original ashtrays. It is possible to actively use any items similar to the parts of a steam engine, car, steam locomotive or submarine.

Wall, floor and a table clock- Another important unit of style. The design of the watch is complicated by many additional details.

The following items will help create a steampunk atmosphere:

  • valve-shaped door handles
  • antique globes
  • huge round wall clock
  • round false windows imitating a porthole
  • riveted chests
  • chubby refrigerator in vintage style
  • wall retro telephones
  • any antique machinery, including, for example, a radio or gramophone
  • posters and photos in sepia
  • toy railroad
  • various objects made of wood and metal with rivets

Steampunk panel

Many fans of this style have an interesting hobby - they give a steampunk look to modern items. Such, for example, as a laptop, TV, toaster. The design is based on a combination of vintage and futuristic. The objects look old, but at the same time they seem to be stuffed with a lot of incomprehensible mechanisms. As if they were made in a factory from an alternative future. Having chosen the steampunk style for decorating your home, you can also get carried away with this interesting activity.

Some prefer a quiet environment and decorate their home with simple decor, while others seek to express their taste and personality in the interior. Steampunk style is just for the latter. He is original and relatively little known, although he already has many followers around the world.

Remember the amazing cafes J&M, Truth Cafe and Joben Bistro, whose photos we cited in the article ? They are an example of a collision elegant design the Victorian era with the industrial inventions of the time, which gave rise to the concept of steampunk style. What are its features and how are they used in the interior of dwellings? Learn more!

A bit of history: how did the steampunk style appear?

Science fiction writer C.W. new work. The image of the constant struggle between the adoption of new technologies and the fear of its consequences has resonated with many people. Gradually, steampunk became a subgenre in the world of science fiction and a way of life for its fans.

Steampunk wallpaper and clothes

Like any other, the steampunk style can manifest itself in different ways in interior design. Most often, his images are inspired by steam engines of the 19th century (“steam” = steam in translation from English.). Various mechanisms and pipes are used as decor items, wallpaper patterns or furniture fittings. Among other fantasies that can serve as a source of ideas:

  1. Post-apocalyptic world in the spirit of the films "Wild West" or "Mad Max: Fury Road";
  2. Retro-futuristic inventions of the 19th and 20th centuries, which express the idea of the people of that time about the world of the future;
  3. Fictional or never realized machines: light airships, Charles Babbage's Difference Engine, analog computers, etc.

Don't jump to conclusions. The steampunk style would not have become so beloved among modern interior designers if it had only mechanisms. They are just the highlight or the tip of the iceberg. The secret to steampunk's appeal lies in their pairing with elegant and chic jewelry, including Victorian designs.

Luxury interior design in steampunk style

In other words, steampunk is a combination of steam engine aesthetics and classic gothic decor. How can you embody this strange style in the design of your house or apartment? Here are some tips and tricks for you!

10 ways to design steampunk in the interior

Not everyone can feel comfortable surrounded by mechanisms, leather and rusty metal. Therefore, if you want to "moderately" use the steampunk style in the interior of the room, then you can limit yourself to using 1 or more ingredients from the following list:

1. Utility mechanisms as room decoration

Among the items that are ideal for creating a steampunk style in the interior: huge dials and clocks with Roman numerals, gears, wheels and levers from old cars, pipes, early TVs and telephones, as well as other details and mechanisms that could be throw it away, sorry.

2. Metals that a steampunk interior cannot do without

Copper, bronze, brass, iron - all of these materials can be used to decorate rooms in a steampunk style. With them, they not only make furniture, lamps and small interior items, but also select a similar design of tiles and wallpaper for walls.

3. Rough finishing materials and textures

Leather, solid wood, raw stone and brick always help to emphasize the industrial design of the room and make it more spectacular.

4. Interior decoration in dark colors

Typical shades for a steampunk interior are grey, brown, black and red. But you can also consider using colors like:

  • Ivory, beige and cream;
  • Luxurious blue or lilac;
  • Dark green;
  • Any tone with a metallic effect.

5. Sci-fi and sci-fi decor items

Vintage barometers, telescopes, globes, geographic Maps, plant and anatomical illustrations, herbariums, etc. things will emphasize the sci-fi setting in your home.

6. Elegant Steampunk Furniture

Give preference to velvet or leather upholstery, metal fittings and wooden cases. If possible, invest in a sophisticated sofa, wardrobe, or armchairs with subtle Victorian-era finishes.

7. Expressive wallpaper for walls with a pattern

Nothing too. This simple rule is not difficult, but it is very important to follow when designing a steampunk interior. If you focus on mechanisms, metal and use a lot of such decor (furniture) in the room, then choose a calm and elegant background for them in the form of wallpaper with Victorian patterns. Conversely, choose bold ones with drawings and mechanisms to emphasize simple furniture and accessories.

Steampunk style in the interior. Invasion of industrial design into the classics updated: December 9, 2016 by: Margarita Glushko

There are interior styles that both delight and frighten at the same time. Being very original and attractive, they at the same time seem too difficult to implement and poorly suitable for life. However, if you look deeper into the topic, it turns out that talented designers from all over the world have already found many options to create an interior in the desired style, while maintaining an authentic atmosphere. In general, everything is not so difficult when professionals get down to business.

Interior Design and Crafting: Alexander Schlesier

Steampunk is a prime example of this style. We already wrote about it earlier in the article "", in which we talked about the philosophy of style and its salient features. If you don't know much about this unusual art direction, we advise you to start your acquaintance with the first review article. Today we will continue to study steampunk in the interior and talk about how it can be put into practice using various methods.

The most important thing is to accurately determine the measure means of expression comfortable for a particular customer. For some, this is a complete immersion in the world of techno art, when furniture and decor become part of the scenery and a theatrical effect is created. For someone - individual elements, built into other styles, with a fair amount of eclecticism. For someone - the level of half-hints and motives, unobtrusive and subtle, but nonetheless understandable and working for the desired perception of space.

Depending on the quantity and quality of expressive means, the following types of steampunk with conventional names can be distinguished:

1. "Orthodox steampunk."
Mainly represented by public interiors. There are not so many residential areas, but there is a steady trend towards the design of individual rooms - mainly the study and the kitchen.

2. "Easysteampunk.
The most extensive group of interiors, characterized by a variety of decorative solutions and relative ease of implementation.

3. "Steampunk motives."
Spaces decorated using themes and images typical of steampunk. There is some liberties in the interpretation of the main ideas of style.

So, let's look at each variety and its specific means for creating a steam interior.

Orthodox steampunk

These rooms are predominantly in dark colors, with subdued light, an abundance of objects and a clearly traced historicity. Typical examples are cafes and bars from the Romanian studio The 6th-Sense Interiors and the apartment building of steampunk spouses from the USA - Bruce and Melanie Rosenbaum, working under the ModVic brand. The main feature is historicity, Victorianism, retro fantasy. Everything works for her: natural shades of walls and things; wall and ceiling decoration with metal, wood, leather, wallpaper with classic patterns (damask, ornaments); historical or industrial furniture, heavy dense textiles, Victorian floor lamps and Tiffany lamps, a lot of mechanical decor and antiques.

The saturation of space sometimes goes off scale, the abundance of details can be tiring. The photos below show just such an unbridled "revelry" of steam fantasy in all its glory. It seems that this is a visualization, but in fact the interior is real. All items are made by a talented craftsman named Alexander Schlesier, who lives in Germany. Even the incredible samovar lamp with six flasks is not just a figment of fantasy, but a real decorative object made of metal and glass.

The orthodox approach to steampunk is also implemented in separate rooms of residential buildings, made in a different style. First of all, these are offices and home offices. They are distinguished by the same retro style and the general heaviness of colors, textures and furnishings. Some of them resemble noble offices of the 19th - early 20th centuries with entourage writing instruments, typewriters and antique-styled computers in a wooden case with brass inserts. The other part looks like laboratories or workshops with scientific details such as ancient anatomical atlases and flasks for chemical experiments.

Kitchens are also a fertile field for steam masters. Kitchen front modding involves decorating with characteristic metals (copper, brass, bronze, iron) or using appropriate paints to create imitations. You can find ready-made kits kitchen furniture, very stylistically consistent, for example, from the manufacturer Officine Gullo. To complete the picture, all sorts of things and little things are still required that remind of the beauty of movement - the central idea of steampunk: gears, pressure gauges, valves, steam devices and the like. More about these artistic means can be read in our previous.

You will be surprised, but bathrooms and bathrooms are made very successfully in steampunk. Moreover, the style in them is implemented very consistently, ranging from harsh brown walls, copper sinks and brass faucets and ending with rivets and porthole mirrors.

A little apart is the topic of interior styling under interior spaces submarine. Here industrialism comes to the fore: metal as the main material for decoration and furniture, the priority of industrial lamps, demonstrative “rigging” with pipes and all kinds of maps and diagrams, decoration with details of a diving suit.

Light steampunk

Here, the original color scheme and the consistent selection of all elements in a single style direction do not play an important role: steampunk things become separate focal points in the interior. One piece of furniture, such as a table with gears, or a pair decorative panels with toothy metal fish, or a coffee maker with a patinated brass case, or a clock framed by copper pipes - all as catchy art objects.

Steam details are embedded in modern styles: contemporary (modern urban style), loft, industrial - and historical: neoclassical, English style, colonial, gothic, modern. The characteristic metals are preserved. In contemporary, the composition is built on the contrast of new and old, in industrial styles - on the basis of a common techno-aesthetics, in related historical ones - on the similarity of retro aesthetics, characteristic of steam and other areas.

In light steampunk everything is simpler and bolder. In an ordinary living room, they freely take root here tube bookshelves and a friendly family of steampunk gizmos above the TV, and in the bedroom there is an absolutely incredible bed with colored stones in a homemade iron frame.

The ability to integrate steampunk aesthetics into other styles greatly expands the possibilities of its application in interior design. Steampunk functions through a few recognizable details against an overall neutral background that can be light, empty, and straightforward. The result is an eclectic mix that creates a calm atmosphere that is lighter and more versatile than heavy orthodox steampunk.

Steampunk motifs

This method is intended for those who are not an ardent supporter of the style, but generally favor it. In the interiors of this group, steampunk is limited to planar images on surfaces, usually vertical. This includes wallpapers and photo wallpapers, ceramic tile, a fragment of a wall with a painting, posters, maps, posters, textiles. The circle of plots is represented by characteristic images, for example, it can be balloons, a typewriter, a fantastic reality in a 3D picture, graphic silhouettes of gears, or even an advertising poster with a portrait of the legendary engineer-inventor Nikola Tesla.

The subjects range from stylized images, like on the wallpapers offered by RADform, to realistic paintings and photographs, like on decorative pillows by Zazzle. Steampunk in very small doses manifests itself even more easily and universally than the previous two varieties. Here we can already talk about the blurring of style, about the freedom in interpreting the main ideas, when the idealization of mechanics and alternative reality is replaced by pure decorativeness and ambiguity of the artistic image. The phenomenon of image ambiguity is of particular interest, because it is in line with the advanced trends in the development of modern design.

The required “dosage” of steam elements for this group: one or two parts per room, including local colors that are characteristic of the style.

Thus, by increasing or decreasing the number of steam things and images in the interior, you can get different degrees of steampunk "intensity". Keeping the "face" of the style in any version allows its bright individuality, which manifests itself in a space saturated with mechanics, and in several magnificent devices, and in the pattern of ceramic tiles.

When a substantive conversation about steampunk comes up, sooner or later the question arises: where can I get it? If decoration and furniture can be easily sorted out by finding manufacturers working in historical or industrial style, then steampunk decor is always handmade. You can "take" them to order from private craftsmen or small manufactories, widely represented in thematic communities on Facebook and Vkontakte, as well as on the portals of the Fair of Masters and Steampunker.ru. With interior designers it is more difficult, but we managed to find two Russian specialists with experience in steampunk interior design: designer Dina Shaneva, St. Petersburg, and architect-designer Mikhail Izyumsky, Moscow.

Tells Dina Shaneva: “The steampunk apartment was an isolated case. The style is really interesting, but in my opinion it is more suitable for public spaces.” It remains to add that among the three types of steampunk that we talked about, the most promising for private housing should be considered the second option, which we called “light steampunk” - the integration of characteristic elements into more versatile and calm styles. Experience speaks in favor of this foreign designers, as well as the level of skill that domestic steampunkers have already achieved in the manufacture of individual items and modding electronic devices and household appliances. Orthodox steampunk, as the designer rightly noted, is heavy for residential premises and is most successfully implemented in public interiors or in the homes of passionate Steammasters.

In the 60s - 80s of the twentieth century, a socio-cultural steampunk movement (sometimes steampunk) appeared among lovers of alternative history. The ideological essence of steampunk lies in the version of the development of civilization based on steam engines. It is logical that the influence of steampunk manifested itself not only in fiction but also in architecture, design and interior design.

Since steampunk is based on steam engines, the steampunk interior is associated with the Victorian era. Experts determine that steampunk can be an independent style, but can be used as an addition to vintage, retro and modern styles.

The color of steampunk is aged in brown tones, from dark beige to almost black. Many details are painted to imitate copper and brass. In accordance with colors the backlight is also selected, the main requirement for which is warm and muted tones. Aerobatics in steampunk is considered to be an imitation of the scattered yellowish light of gas lamps, as a rule, gas discharge lamps are used for this.

Steampunk walls in the interior

Since steampunk is seen as a kind of projection of the Victorian era, the walls in the house should also look like the walls of a Victorian house (experts often use the term natural country). As a material, both natural stone and wooden or metal panels can be used. Sometimes metal strips with rivets are used to imitate the inner skin of a submarine, like the Nautilus from Jules Verne. As an alternative, stylized as a worn-out type can be used brickwork or fabric upholstery in Victorian style.

Floor and ceiling in the steampunk interior of the apartment

Natural natural wood, varnished. Only such a floor in the interior of a steampunk, however, it is not very expensive, and since the style is quite democratic, less expensive can be used flooring imitating expensive varieties natural wood. It is recommended to lay tiles in the color of natural stone in the kitchen and bathroom. As an extremely radical expression of style, the floor in the bathroom is lined with street cobblestones, it makes a strong impression and conveys the essence of the style as much as possible. As for the ceilings, they should be high and vaulted, while asymmetry in the form of various steps and arches is welcome.

Arches, columns and niches are required in steampunk

Steampunk furniture

There are two approaches to choosing furniture in a stipanka: Victorian and futuristic. In the first option, the furniture is selected massive, maximally imitating the furniture of a bygone era. Genuine leather or heavy fabrics are used as upholstery. Many details of such furniture contain metal elements, most often copper or brass. In the futuristic version of the furniture, one of the main components is metal pipes, which give the room an unreality and at the same time hint at its own functional purpose. Often there are no shelves in the rooms, pipes are used instead, both for storing books (shelves) and for storing kitchen utensils.

Steampunk decor

As designers sometimes joke, a steampunk house risks turning into a museum. Indeed, a variety of objects from a past life are used as decor. Only in such a house can you find a typewriter or a landline phone. Everything from nuts and bolts to pistons, valves and geographical maps is used as decor. According to observations, romantic and creative personalities, who are often called physicists and lyricists, live in houses and apartments stylized as steampunk, which does not prevent them from being original and bold.

We continue to tell you about such an unusual interior style as steampunk. The first part of the article:. In it, we looked at how to create the basis for a style - finishes, colors and lighting. Furniture and decorative elements truly reveal this style, and we will talk about them.

Furniture

There is a close connection between Victorian style and steampunk in the furniture. All chairs, armchairs and sofas will be reminiscent of that era. The most classic will be brown leather upholstered furniture with brass or bronze details.

Another variant upholstered furniture for steampunk reflects its futuristic part. The metal upholstered armchair fits perfectly.

The rest of the furniture follows the same principle - wooden and antique or brutal metal. Often cabinets are turned into strange steam engines decorated with valves and gears. And for books the best place- a shelf of water pipes.

To implement steampunk in the kitchen, cabinets are often made to look like stoves or steam locomotive fireboxes. stylized the best choice for such an interior.

Decor

In steampunk, even the usual technique, without which you can’t do without, will become a decor. Computers, TVs and Appliances, stylized as mechanisms - a feature of this style.

For many, steampunk is associated with nuts, gears and other details. And, indeed, this is one of the most striking symbols of style. In decor, gears can be used as part of watches, lamps and other functional items, or simply as an art object.

Antique mechanisms, such as barometers, gauges with dials and arrows, typewriters, would be appropriate to put on display.

Pipes can not only serve as shelves, but also be used to decorate the room in all sorts of ways. Valves, pistons - there too. The main thing is that everything should be made of copper, brass or metal artificially aged with bituminous varnish or patina.

Steampunk refers us to an era when long-distance travel was just becoming possible. Therefore, globes and ancient geographical maps will be appropriate in the interior. In many images you will see hats of a characteristic style - also a detail of that time.

Models of locomotives, airships and submarines are a great addition to the decor. Sometimes things go beyond the scale of the model: this is illustrated by a dirigible apartment in New York.

Since submarines play a big role in steampunk, it's no surprise that octopuses and huge fish often adorn these interiors. Three Rings Design for their office in San Francisco, made an original ironic interpretation of steampunk. A huge sofa in the shape of an octopus and numerous references to this sea monster became the highlight of the solution.
