Comfortable, practical, perfectly fitting into modern interiors, suitable for any windows, roman blinds for the kitchen, living room, nursery, bathroom today at the peak of popularity. Unfortunately, in the finished sale, it is far from always possible to find an option suitable for a particular situation and fully satisfying our requests. The way out in this case will be the master classes "Do-it-yourself Roman blinds" published below. They are simple, understandable, and although fundamentally different in technology, both are suitable for both experienced and novice craftswomen. The resulting curtains are also different. In the first case, the folds on them are hard, geometrically even, and in the second, they are soft, smoothly sagging towards the center.

General steps for all methods

There are many ways to make Roman blinds with your own hands, but they all have two common steps: measuring and calculating folds.

P1 Taking dimensions

Layout of curtains relative to the window
  • Outside. To obtain the length of the panel in this case, you need to decide at what height the cornice will be located, and measure the distance from the top point of its attachment to the window sill. To obtain a value for the width, measure the width of the window opening and add 12-16 cm to it, or take the width of the window sill as a basis, including its parts protruding beyond the opening. This is to ensure that the fabric covers the window completely.
  • Inside. To obtain the value of the length of the curtain when fastened inside the opening, measure the distance to the window sill from the upper slope of the window. To calculate the width, it is necessary to measure the width of the window opening in several places, as it may not be too even. The calculation is based on the smallest value obtained and subtracted another 2 cm from it. This is done so that the curtain can easily rise and fall without touching the slope.
  • On window frame... In this case, measure the length and width of the transparent part of the window (glass). So that the curtain completely closes it, but does not interfere with the functioning of the sash, the distance from the glass to the base of the handle, multiplied by 2, is added to the width, and to the length of 10-12 cm.Another way to get the value of the length of the curtain when it is attached directly to the window frame is to measure its height ...

P2 Calculating folds

Any Roman shade consists of identical horizontal folds, gathering one above the other when lifted. After the main dimensions curtains, you can start calculating their number and depth. There can be as many folds as the length of the fabric will allow, but most often from 5 to 9. A smaller amount will simplify the design of the curtain, and a larger amount will make it unnecessarily lush.

Calculation procedure

To make a Roman blind, the number of folds and their depth are selected in each case individually, based on the height of the window opening or window.

Take a curtain with a length of 145 cm as a sample.

Find out the length of the fabric for laying the folds. Suppose top padding = 5 cm, 145-5 = 140 cm.
Using the selection method, we calculate the height of each fold. To do this, divide the resulting length by numbers, starting with 5.

140: 5 = 28 cm;
140: 6 = 2.3 cm;
140: 7 = 20 cm;
140: 8 = 18.5 cm;
140: 9 = 15.5 cm.

We choose from the results obtained the one in which, in your opinion, the curtain will look most impressive.

Roman blinds from blinds without sewing

Almost all the ways of how to sew Roman shades with your own hands, as a rule, require a sewing machine. In contrast to them, the master class offered below tells step by step how to make beautiful and high-quality Roman curtains on your own without sewing in 2-3 hours and is suitable even for people who have never held a thread and a needle in their hands. What is its essence? First, the fabric cuts are processed with adhesive tape rather than machine stitching. Secondly, the traditional lifting mechanism for Roman blinds is being replaced by inexpensive plastic blinds, which further simplifies the process of making curtains. It is also convenient that the blinds for Roman blinds according to our master class do not have to be new. They can be used and, despite this, the curtain will look beautiful and neat.

Necessary materials

To make a do-it-yourself Roman blind based on blinds, you will need:

  1. A set of plastic horizontal blinds for the width of your window;
  2. A piece of dense, well-shaped fabric;
  3. Adhesive tape on a paper base, 1 - 2.5 cm wide;
  4. Fabric glue or any all-purpose glue;
  5. Brush;
  6. Scissors, tailor's chalk;
  7. Roulette or centimeter, ruler;
  8. Iron and gauze.

Operating procedure

We look at the procedure in P1 of our article "General steps for all methods of sewing Roman blinds." We add 5 and 12 cm to the resulting width and length, respectively.

Step 1: making measurements

Step 2: We begin to make the curtain ourselves

Cut off a piece of fabric according to the dimensions obtained and process the bottom and side cuts. This can be done in two ways:

  1. We turn the edge to be treated on the wrong side by 2.5 cm, place adhesive tape between the layers of fabric and fix it with an iron.
  2. On the seamy side of the fabric, at a distance of 2.5 cm from the edge to be treated, draw a line with chalk. We turn the fabric right side up, apply adhesive tape to the edge with the paper base up and iron it. Turn the fabric over and fold the edge with the glued tape up and iron again. We bend the edge inside out again to the marking line, iron the fold, remove the paper and glue (iron) it completely.

Both the one and the other procedure is repeated with the other edge and bottom, and the top is left unprocessed. The second method is more difficult, but its result looks neater, since the slices are hidden in the hem.

Step 3: preparing the blinds

We need to shorten the blinds to the required length and remove the extra slats from them, leaving only a few pieces. To do this, open them to their full length and lay them out on a flat surface.

We cut thin threads along the entire length. They serve to rotate the slats around the axis and regulate the luminous flux and are not useful in our Roman blind. Do not confuse these with the thicker threads used to raise and lower the blinds and run through each bar.

As a result, we get blinds with slats freely moving up and down.

Step 4: calculating folds and removing excess lamellas

Before stitching a Roman blind, you need to decide how many folds we want to lay on it. Lamellas, if you do not take into account the weighting bar, will require one less. We calculate the number of folds according to P2 of our article "General steps for all methods of sewing Roman blinds", but in principle, you can make their number, as well as the depth, whatever you like. The following rules are usually followed:

  • 6 folds are laid on curtains up to 145 cm long. In this case, 5 strips are left;
  • On curtains up to 225 cm long, 7 folds are laid and 6 slats are left;
  • On curtains longer than 225 cm, 8 folds are laid, for which, respectively, 7 slats are required.

In order to remove the extra lamellas, take out the plug on the weighting bar and cut off the knot on which the cords are tied.

Then we remove the weighting agent, leave the required number of lamellas, shorten the cords, if necessary, return the weighting bar to its place, tie the cords and install the plug in place.

This is how the blinds will become in the end

Step 5: glue the top of the canvas to the cornice

You can also do this in two ways:

  1. With glue.
  2. With Velcro tape.

In the first case, we glue the upper end of the cornice and apply the upper edge of the curtain to it, slightly wrapping it over the cornice. In the second, we glue Velcro tape in pieces on the end of the cornice and the upper edge of the curtain.

Step 6: glue the slats and the weight bar onto the fabric

We did the hardest job. Now you need to evenly and accurately distribute the slats over the fabric. The size of the interval between them can be calculated using the formula S = L: N - H, where S is the required interval, L is the length of the curtain, N is the number of lamellae, H is the height of one lamella.

Having made the necessary calculations, we mark the locations of the lamellas with chalk, apply glue to them with a brush and glue them to the fabric. When doing this, it is important to ensure that no adhesive gets on the adjusting cords. Finally, glue the bottom of the curtain to the weight bar.

Step 7: Reinstall the curtain

Above the window, our roman blind is installed in the same way as the mini blinds on the basis of which it is made.

We do the following: screw the grooves for the upper bar to the window opening, and then insert the bar itself into them.

Our Roman blinds are completely finished

Soft (European) Roman blind

Roman blinds are not necessarily strict geometry and asceticism. There are also more romantic variations of them, when there are no transverse slats in the canvas, the folds are not kept in a strictly horizontal position and sag smoothly towards the center. Outwardly, they resemble Austrian or English counterparts, but they differ from the "Austrians" in that they consist of only one section, and from "Englishwomen" by the absence of vertical bow folds and lateral sagging.

As a result, do-it-yourself soft Roman curtains, according to the step-by-step instructions offered below, look stricter and more modest than their closest counterparts, but more romantic than models with rigid inserts and fit perfectly into a cozy home environment.

The sewing guide for European Roman blinds is extremely simple. Even a novice craftswoman can make them. It is also nice that not so much fabric is required for such a model, and even if you choose an expensive option, such curtains will turn out to be quite budgetary.

Bathroom and window for which our curtain is intended before and after cosmetic repairs

It is advisable to choose fabric for any curtains (and Roman ones are no exception) based on the peculiarities of their cut and design and the purpose of the room in which they are planned to be hung. Below we offer an option that is best suited for a bathroom or kitchen made of thick cotton fabric, if possible impregnated with a composition that repels water and kitchen odor. But this is just a recommendation, and the final choice depends only on your vision.

Necessary materials

In order to sew Roman blinds with soft folds according to our master class, you will need:

  1. 2-3 meters of fabric for the front side (depending on the height of the window and the depth of the folds you choose);
  2. 2-3 meters of lining fabric;
  3. sewing machine;
  4. scissors;
  5. threads, needles;
  6. safety pins;
  7. furniture stapler;
  8. plastic rings;
  9. 3 hook screws;
  10. nylon cord;
  11. wooden barok for installing curtains;
  12. wooden slat for the bottom.

Operating procedure

Step 1: Before we start sewing Roman curtains with our own hands, we take measurements

In our case, it is supposed to hang the curtain on plastic windows outside the opening. How to take measurements is described in P1 "General steps for all methods of sewing Roman blinds". To the obtained dimensions on the front we add 4 cm from the sides, 2 cm from the top, and 8 cm from the bottom to the seams and hem, and on the lining, respectively, 2 cm, 2 cm and 8 cm.

Step 2: cut out the front of the curtain

Making paper patterns is not required. Smooth the fabric with an iron, fold it along to the required width, cut off the excess along the entire length. If the fabric is more than two times wider than the window opening (in our case, the width of the window in the bathroom is 80 cm, and the fabric is 190 cm), it will be needed, respectively, two times less. Cut the canvas in half width and join in one long piece.

Before attaching the parts on a typewriter, do not forget to carefully and accurately align the drawing, as shown in the photo below.

Step 3: cut out the lining and connect it to the front

If the lining fabric is more than 2 times wider than the future curtain, we first perform the same procedure as above: we cut the fabric across the width, and then we begin to sew the resulting pieces together into one long canvas. Do not forget to iron each seam well on both sides.

Then we sew the lining to the front of the curtain along the side and top seams. To do this, we combine in sections both canvases with the front sides to each other, chop off with safety pins and sew on three sides, departing from the edges by 2 cm.Then remove the pins, turn the curtain on the front side and smooth the seams with an iron.

Step 4: shape the bottom seam

Tuck the bottom of the curtain 2 cm, iron it, sew it, tuck it another 6 cm and sew and iron it again.

Step 5: Sew on the fold rings

With safety pins, on the sides, in accordance with the calculations of the folds, we mark the places where the rings will be located and sew them by hand.

After the rings are sewn, we pass nylon cords through them.

Step 6: Prepare a bar for installing a Roman shade over the window opening

To make the block look aesthetically pleasing, we wrap it in a lining fabric and fix it with a stapler. The curtain itself on a refined bar can be fixed in two ways:

  1. Staples with a stapler (as shown in the photo below);
  2. Using Velcro Velcro tape, sticking one part of it on the bar, and the other on the upper part of the curtain from the wrong side.

The second option is convenient in that the curtain can be easily and easily removed for washing and hung back in place.

Step 7: insert the screw rings

Screw rings-screws into the block at the same distance from the edges as the plastic rings and thread nylon cords through them. The lifting mechanism is ready.

Step 8: styling the bottom edge

In the drawstring made by us at the bottom of the curtain, we insert wooden lath... It will help the bottom of the curtain to keep the strict "Roman" shape. The strip should not be visible, so its length should be 2 cm shorter than the width of the curtain.

Step 9: Install the structure over the window opening

You can install a curtain over the window, just like a roll one, or you can use metal corners pre-fixed above the window opening.

Our do-it-yourself kitchen or bathroom is completely ready.

Making Roman curtains with your own hands video

[Rated: 14 Average rating: 3.9]

On the Internet and on Youtube, you can find many master classes on how to sew Roman blinds yourself. But, as a rule, these methods require some sewing skills, a sewing machine and preparation. various materials for their manufacture. But for those who do not know how to sew, who do not have a sewing machine and who are not ready to pick up everything necessary fixtures, we have prepared step-by-step master class about how to quickly and efficiently make roman blinds with your own hands with little or no sewing.

  • What is the essence of the usual methods? The first step is sewing curtains, then several slats are sewn to the canvas, 3 rings are sewn to each slat, then ropes are passed through them from top to bottom, taken out through the hooks-rings on the upper cornice, and finally, they are pulled out through the side hook. Thus, by pulling on these strings, the curtain can be raised and lowered. The fabric is attached to the cornice with a Velcro tape, and the cornice itself is made of a wooden block. This method has its pros and cons: you need to prepare slats, a block, a bracket with self-tapping screws for mounting, a furniture stapler, nylon ropes, etc.
  • What is the essence of making Roman blinds with your own hands without sewing and homemade cornice? Firstly, in this master class, we propose to process sections of fabric with an adhesive spider web, and not sewing. This solution is just right for curtains and will be no worse than the "line". Secondly, we will replace the "set" of bars, rods, ropes, rings, etc., which are inexpensive (150-500 rubles) and are sold everywhere. So you don't have to look for lumber and various accessories, and such a curtain will look very neat and beautiful.

What needs to be prepared for work?

Before you start, you need to buy and prepare:

  1. Cut of fabric - the fabric should be dense so as not to sag and keep its shape;
  2. Cobweb adhesive tape 0.5 mm-1 cm wide on a paper base;
  3. Auxiliary materials: chalk, scissors, ruler, tape measure;
  4. A brush and glue for fabric (sold in any sewing store, but you can also use Moment for Shoes or Moment Crystal glue);
  5. Any plastic blindsthat are suitable in width to your window (old blinds will fit even with chips and broken slats, the main thing is that the lifting mechanism is in working order);
  6. Iron and gauze as an iron.

Step 1. Making measurements and cutting the fabric

To cut the fabric, you need to measure the window opening, but first you need to decide how you want to hang the curtains:

  • Inside the window opening - in this case, the finished curtains should be 2 cm narrower than the window opening. That is, if, for example, its width is 150 cm, then we need ready-made curtains 148 cm. To the desired width we add 6 cm to the hem along the edges and get the width of the fabric cut 154 cm. The length of the cut is calculated as follows: subtract from the height of the window opening 2 cm and to this number we add 3 cm (on the bottom hem) and the height of the eaves (usually 4 or 2 cm).
  • Above the window opening - in this case, the measurements of the window must be done in the same way as on ordinary curtains, but we measure the fabric for cutting according to the following principle:
  • Width of the fabric cut = desired width of the finished curtain + 6 cm hem allowance at the edges;
  • The length of the fabric cut = the desired length of the finished curtain unfolded + 3 cm of the bottom hem allowance + the height of the cornice (you need to measure, usually 2 or 4 cm) + a couple of centimeters so that you can wrap the cornice, and there was no ugly cut of the fabric it is seen;

According to the obtained measurements, we cut out the fabric, and then iron it.

Step 2. We process the side edges

Now we need to process the side sections of the fabric.

Method 1: just fold the edges once to a width of 3 cm, put the cobweb (you can take it without a base) between two layers of fabric as shown in the photo and fix it with an iron. If there is a sewing machine, then the sections can be pre-arranged with an overlock. We repeat this procedure for the other side and the bottom of the curtains, and do not touch the top for now.

  • The spider web should be ironed with a well-heated iron with steam, and preferably through a cotton cloth or gauze. The main thing here is not to overexpose the iron, but also not to rush so that the glue has time to melt and grab onto the fabric, then the curtains will serve you for a long time and will not require gluing after several washes;
  • Beforehand, it is better to practice and test the cobweb on an unnecessary piece of fabric.

Method 2, which is a little more complicated than the first, but the edges will look neater, since the crumbling sections will be hidden in the hidden hem:

  1. We put the fabric with the wrong side up, make an indent from the edges of 3 cm and mark a small dotted line along the entire length of the canvas with a ruler;
  2. Now turn the fabric face up and place it on the ironing board. Then we apply an adhesive spider web to the very edge (with a paper base top) and begin to iron it right along the base, lingering at each section for 10 seconds. Attention! You don't need to peel off the paper yet;
  3. Are you finished? Now we turn the fabric over to the wrong side and bend the same edge with the cobweb up, and then it turns out that the paper base "looks at you". We iron it to the end again and do not peel it off yet;
  4. Now we fold the edge once again to the inside out, but already with an indent of 2 cm, that is, right to the line of our marking. We simply iron the fold of the fabric again without removing the paper layer from the cobweb;
  5. But now, when the fold is formed and ironed, we can safely tear off the paper and seal it completely.
  6. We repeat the procedure with the other side of the fabric and with the bottom, and do not touch the top for now.

Step 3. Glue the top of the fabric to the cornice

  • Before gluing, read the instructions of the glue manufacturer - sometimes it is enough to smooth the fabric, and sometimes you need to put a heavy press on the gluing place for a while;
  • Before applying the adhesive, be sure to test it on an unnecessary cut of material.

Step 4. Remaking the blinds

For now, we leave the fabric alone and start redoing the blinds - this is done quickly and easily, so even a child can handle it. Our task is to shorten the blinds to the required length, and most importantly, to remove the extra slats and leave only a few pieces. To do this, cut the rope that connects the slats to each other as shown in the photo below; it is important not to confuse it with the control cord.

Done! Now we take out the cut rope and get blinds with lamellas freely moving along the cords, as can be seen in the next photo.

  • For short curtains (up to 145 cm) small windows need 6 folds. In this case, you need to leave 5 lamellas (excluding the lower weighting bar);
  • For standard curtains (145-225 cm) you need 7 folds. In this case, we leave 6 lamellas (excluding the lower weighting bar);
  • For long curtains (over 225 cm) you need 8 folds. In this case, 7 slats should be left (excluding the lower weighting bar).

To remove the extra lamellas, unfasten the plastic plug on the lower weight bar and untie / cut off the knot of cords as shown in the photo.

Then we remove all the extra slats, leaving only 5, 6 or 7 pieces and, guided by the length of the curtains, cut off the excess cords, if any. Now we put the weight bar back on these cords, tie the knots and attach the plugs.

Step 5. Glue the lamellas to the bar

  • To do this more accurately, you can calculate the spacing using the formula: spacing between slats = (length of finished curtains / number of slats) - (minus) the height of each slat (usually 1, 27 cm or 89 mm).

We make the marking with chalk, that is, we mark where we will glue the lamellas, then we apply glue to them and press them against the fabric (according to the manufacturer's instructions). It is important to glue the lamellas without touching the adjustment cords.

Step 6. Process the bottom

Almost ready! It remains only to glue the bottom edge of the curtain to the weight bar, as shown in the photo, and install the cornice. This can be done using ours or the manufacturer's instructions.

DIY Roman blinds: step-by-step instruction tailoring

It takes ~ 3 minutes to read

    Save

Roman blinds always look austere and elegant. They suit any interior style. They will be appropriate in any room: in the nursery, living room, bedroom or kitchen. Their convenience lies in the fact that they significantly save space, while effectively protecting the house from hot sunlight or prying eyes. Using such curtains will help visually expand a small room. Plus, you won't need to leave space for a pretty drapery. In this article, we will look at the step-by-step instructions for sewing with your own hands.

Of course, they are plentiful in stores. But you can show your design talents and sew them yourself. Sewing them on your own is a simple and exciting experience. Even a novice needlewoman can handle it. However, there are a few things to be aware of.

What to make of? Choice of material for curtains

    Save

Before making them with your own hands, you need to choose a fabric. They can be sewn from almost any fabric. If your curtain's top priority is to protect from the sun, choose thick curtain fabrics. Try to keep the material rigid enough. Then it will keep its shape perfectly, and when raised, form beautiful folds.

The texture and colors of the fabric should overlap with the design of the room. For rooms in an antique style, cotton, linen or burlap-like fabrics are suitable.

For modern and hi-tech, it is better to choose unusual, shiny, space fabrics.

The consumption of material for their pattern is small. Therefore, you can pay attention to even the most expensive design materials. They will look gorgeous.

Pay attention to the transparency of the fabric. If you want as much as possible to enter the house sun rays, but at the same time hide the situation from prying prying eyes (this is very important for residents of the first floors), choose a translucent material. If you want to protect yourself from the sun as much as possible, look for a material with a special impregnation - black out. They are absolutely opaque and do not fade even in bright sun.

    Save

You need to be especially careful in choosing if you are sewing such a curtain in the kitchen. Even with the use of modern technology, it is not always possible to avoid droplets of grease, burning and soot. Therefore, all kitchen textiles should absorb dirt as little as possible, be washable and wash well. For kitchens, you can choose special fabrics with dirt-repellent properties. They will keep their appearance, and thanks to a special impregnation, dirt is easily washed off from them even at low temperatures. In addition, this type of fabric does not absorb odors, which is very important for the kitchen.

If you prefer naturalness to technological progress, choose fabrics of mixed composition. They are made from natural linen, cotton and silk with minor amounts of synthetic fibers. The threads are selected in such proportions so that the finished fabric is as beautiful and easy to clean as possible.

Roman blinds can be single or double. Single ones are best made of light translucent materials that transmit light well: tulle, veil, organza. It is advisable to make doubles from dense fabrics in order to prevent burnout of the inner layer.

The photo below shows a single translucent organza curtain. pay attention to perfect combination styles, colors and textures.

And, of course, it is very important to choose the right color and pattern. They must definitely match the design of the room. Universal option - plain fabrics. They will fit into any style. Abstract paintings will perfectly complement avant-garde styles, and floral motifs - rustic, country or Provence style. And variations on a gastronomic theme will be appropriate in any kitchen, regardless of style.

Dimensions

    Save

Before you sew it yourself, think about the type of fastening and determine the dimensions. It should perfectly follow the shape of the window. For this, it is very important to correctly measure and cut the fabric.

Before measuring, decide on the type of attachment. There are three of them:

After determining the sizes, you can start creating patterns and sewing. The master class is given below.

Master class: how to sew yourself?

In this master class, step by step sewing of a curtain will be described, consisting of one canvas.

There may be several towels. In this case, each piece of fabric will need its own curtain rod. Sewing such a product is much more difficult. Therefore, if you are sewing it yourself for the first time, start with a single model.

    Save

Prepare everything you need first.

Materials

  • The cloth. A double curtain will also need a lining material.
  • Velcro tape. Its length corresponds to the width of the curtain.
  • Frame rods. They can be plastic or steel. Their diameter is about 5 mm, and their length is 3 cm less than the curtain width. They will need 7 or 8 pieces. It is ideal to find special plastic curtain rods. They are sold in curtain shops or tailoring shops. You can buy a whalebone, which is sold in sewing stores and is used for sewing underwear. You will have to pre-straighten it by heating it with an iron, or putting it under a press. If you don’t find any of this, you can take a regular stainless steel wire. But it is not very comfortable, since the sharp edges can easily damage the fabric. You can also use round wooden blocks.
  • Plastic rings with a diameter of about 1 cm - 10-12 pieces.
  • Nylon cord. You will need three cuts equal to two lengths plus one curtain width.
  • Weight bar.
  • A wooden block that will act as a cornice. You can use a ready-made cornice with a lambrequel strip already attached.
  • Screws and hooks on the screw foot.

    Measure the window opening. To the width of the opening add 5-7 cm on each side to the seams, and in height - 10-15 cm.

  • Prepare the fabric for cutting. To prevent the curtain from shrinking during further washings, "plant" it in advance: soak it in warm water, dry it and iron it with an iron. It is not necessary to wash the fabric in a typewriter, since without processing the edges can crumble a lot, and the fabric itself can stretch diagonally.
  • Spread the fabric flat on the floor or table. Draw a small outline of the future curtain. Mark the folds immediately. It is important to respect their dimensions precisely. This is one of the main sewing secrets. Dimensions and quantity depend on the length of the curtain and are shown in the table.
  • We mark the lines of the folds and the place of installation of the rings - holders for the cord. The resulting pattern will look like the picture.
    • Save

    Work the sides by folding the fabric twice. Watch the thread tension. The line should not tighten the material, otherwise the finished product will bulge ugly.

  • Attach Velcro tape to the underside of the curtain rod. This can be done with glue, furniture stapler, or screws.
  • Fold and finish the top edge. Sew on the second piece of Velcro. This is done so that the finished rim is easy to remove from the cornice and wash.
  • We process the bottom edge. Make a "pocket" on it, in which the weight bar will be located. A thin wooden beam or a piece of aluminum profile can be used as a weighting agent. If the fabric is translucent, paint the bar in the desired color in advance.
  • Sew decorative tape from the inside out. Make the pockets for the twigs at the same time. Insert the rods in their places. Be careful not to let them catch or pull on the curtain fabric. Sew the pockets on one side. With the second, you will take out the rods when you remove the curtain for washing.
  • Sew on the rings by hand according to the markings. For fixing lifting mechanism three rings must be placed on the cornice. Do this with regular screws or hook screws. The rings should be symmetrical about the middle and at least 5 cm from the edge.
  • Attach the curtain to the eaves using the Velcro.
    • Save

    Thread the cords through the rings. To do this, tie them in a knot around the bottom rings. For reliability, you can fix the result with glue. Then, from the bottom up, go through all the rings, including the topmost ones. Pass all the cords through the top row of rings to one side.

  • Pull all the cords, straighten the tabs on the curtains. Secure the folds with ribbons.
  • Attach the curtain rod. Untie the braid and lower the shade. Equalize the tension of all cords and knot them behind the outer ring.
  • Pass the cords through the shade lifting handle. Tie the second knot at a distance of 40-50 cm from the first knot. Cut off the remaining free ends of the cord. To prevent the edges from crumbling, you can melt them over the fire.

For the manufacture of Roman blinds with your own hands, it is allowed to use fabrics of any texture. It all depends on the intended functionality and the degree of darkness that you would like to create in the room with their help.

Black out curtains

This is a variety modern materialswith the highest degree of light protection. Fabrics of this category are treated with a special impregnation, which allows you to completely block the penetration of sunlight, and also prevent heating of the air in the room and prevent furniture from burning out.

Curtains made of natural materials

Blinds made of natural fabrics (linen or cotton) have an average light transmission, so they are more appropriate to use in living rooms or dining rooms. Linen and cotton curtains are non-electrifying, highly durable and look very elegant. However, when choosing natural materials, you need to make allowances for the fact that after the first wash, the fabric may shrink. When measuring, this moment must be taken into account.

Synthetic fabrics for roman blinds

Curtains made of synthetics or with a high percentage of artificial thread are very convenient both in sewing and in use. They almost do not wrinkle, do not shrink and wash well. And if in production they were treated with dirt and moisture-proof liquids, such canvases hardly get dirty and do not accumulate dust. Synthetic products are optimal for the kitchen, balcony or windows on the loggia. The variety of colors and additional accessories allows you to design a window in any style. The main thing is that the direction of the design coincides with the interior decoration of the room.

Synthetic Roman shades

Roman shades made of mixed fabrics

Blended fabrics, in the production of which yarns and fibers of different composition, both natural and artificial, are used, are perhaps the most the best option for sewing home textiles. They have excellent performance properties, are resistant to damage, tearing and tightening. Often such materials have a bright color that does not lose its intensity for a long time, and a large selection of the degree of density will allow you to choose a canvas specifically for your needs.

So, we figured out the choice of fabric. Now it remains to decide what tools and materials we need in order to sew a Roman blind with our own hands.

Required tools

To sew yourself, you must have in stock:

  • a piece of canvas from which you will make a curtain. If your goal is thicker curtains with good light protection, also purchase a lining fabric;
  • a wooden plank, the length of which should be equal to the estimated width of the product, the width should be 5 cm, and the thickness should be about 2.5 cm;
  • thin wooden or metal strips that will be sewn into the fabric horizontally. Their length should be a couple of centimeters less than the width of the canvas, and the number depends on how many folds you want to make on a classic Roman blind;
  • weighting agent - a wooden block or metal plate with a length equal to the width of the curtain;
  • synthetic lace (preferably nylon). Its size should be at least 5 times the length of the curtain;
  • furniture stapler;
  • a roll of Velcro tape;
  • a skein of a finishing border, about 2 - 3 cm wide;
  • plastic or metal rings;
  • cord clamp (bracket or hook);
  • needle, thread, scissors;
  • sewing machine.

DIY Roman blinds step by step instructions

Having prepared all the necessary elements, you can get to work.

Step 1. Measurement and pattern of fabric

If you chose the option of a curtain located inside the opening, then the window measurement scheme looks like this:

  • L (length) of the curtain = the distance from the upper slope of the window to the window sill plus 7 - 10 cm for the fold (bottom and top);
  • B (width) of the curtain = the width of the window opening plus the seam allowances (5 - 7 cm) and minus 2 - 3 cm, required so that the finished curtain does not cling to the side panels.

When decorating a window by mounting curtains on a wall or ceiling, that is, outside the opening, adhere to the following values:

  • L (length) of the curtain = the distance from the intended place of attachment of the cornice to the window sill plus hem allowances (about 10 cm). Usually, when wall location, the suspension is attached at a distance of about 10-15 cm from the upper slope of the window group;
  • B (width) curtain = desired width of the finished product, plus 6 cm for the side seams. Most often, with the option of mounting from the outside, the Roman blind is made about 5 - 10 cm wider than the window opening.

After taking all the measurements and adding centimeters to the seams, be sure to wet the fabric in warm water, wring it out and iron it so that it does not shrink after the first wash. Spread the material on a horizontal surface, measure the required length and width, and cut.

Step 2. Calculate the folds

All the beauty of the Roman classic curtains consists in a beautiful drapery that appears when the product is lifted. For your curtains to look neat and fold in even stripes, it is very important to correctly calculate the width of the folds, depending on the height of the window.

For convenience, we have compiled a table that will help you make a calculation.

Window height (cm) Number of folds Interval between warehouses (cm) Window height (cm) Number of folds Interval between warehouses (cm) Window height (cm) Number of folds Interval between warehouses (cm)
7 19,3 180 7 24,0 215 7 28,7

7 23,3 210 7 28,0 245 8 28,8
250 8 29,4

Mark on the seamy side the places of future folds and fold lines.

Step 3. Fabric processing

  • We turn the fabric on the sides by 3 cm from each edge, sew;
  • We process the upper edge of the canvas with an overlock, make a fold of 5 cm, and sew a Velcro tape across the entire width;
  • After that, we are engaged in the lower edge - we make the so-called "pocket" into which the weighting agent will be inserted;
  • Make the same "pockets" using a trim, sewn on the wrong side of the material in those places where you marked the warehouses;
  • We sew rings on the border through which the laces will be pulled to lift the canvas. Place the parts symmetrically, starting from the center of the fabric and stopping at a distance of 5 - 10 cm from the edge;
  • Slide the weight and frame battens along the curtain. Sew the holes on the sides.

Step 4. Attaching the curtain

  • To the bar on which the curtain will be attached, using a furniture stapler, we nail the Velcro tape;
  • On the reverse side of the timber we nail the rings, the location of which must exactly coincide with the position of similar accessories on the fabric;
  • With the help on a bar;
  • Pass the laces through all rows of rings, fixing their ends at the bottom with the help of knots, and at the top, bring them to one side and connect to each other;
  • Pull the cord to assemble the curtain. Check how nicely the warehouses are laid, if necessary, align the rows.

Step 5. Fixing to the window

  • If you install the product inside the opening, use tape brackets or types that are attached directly to the frame or sash;
  • For installation above the opening - attach metal corners at the required height, and on them already install a wooden beam with a curtain;
  • Screw a hook (bracket) to the frame, which will serve to wind the lifting cord that fixes the curtain in the assembled position.

Dissolve and raise the curtain again to make sure that all the actions performed are correct. As a result, you should get an even and neat curtain that can be gathered with a cord into beautiful warehouses.

Learning how to sew do-it-yourself Roman shades , you can decorate your home with original and unusual products that will give your home a unique charm and personality. If the style of your choice allows the use of decorative elements, decorate the curtain with metal fittings, ribbons or fringes along the bottom edge, or on the sides. Similar designs look very impressive, complete with other types of curtains - for example, with heavy curtains or Italian curtains, which are distinguished by an asymmetrical arrangement of grabs.

We hope that our master class on sewing Roman curtains will help even the most novice dressmaker to be proud of the results of her labor. After all, not a single thing will bring so much joy and satisfaction as one that is made by hand.

it step by step guide with a photo will help you sew classic roman blinds with your own hands.

In this master class, a method is described in detail in which not a single stitch of a stitch will be visible from the front side of the curtain. This will give the product a neat look and look like the work of a true professional.

In addition, you do not risk ruining your curtain with uneven stitching, which happens quite often.

Of course, the amount of manual work and the time spent will be a little more, but the result is worth it.

What you need:

  • a piece of fabric for the front side (thick material is best suited);
  • a piece of fabric for lining (it is best to use white chintz);
  • needle;
  • threads;
  • ruler;
  • scissors;
  • pencil or special marker for fabric;
  • sewing machine;
  • (traditional wooden or ready-made mechanism);
  • frame rods and weighting agent.

Step 1. Removing the dimensions

First of all, you need to measure the window and calculate the dimensions.

You need to decide how exactly the curtain will be located: inside the window opening or outside.

Inside the opening

If you chose the first option, then the curtain height is measured from the upper slope of the window to the window sill.

To calculate the exact width, you need to measure the window opening in three places, as it can be uneven. The smallest value obtained must be taken as a basis and another 2 cm must be subtracted from it so that the curtain passes easily and does not rub against the slope.

Outside the opening

In the second case, to determine the height of the curtain, you need to decide at what level from the window niche the cornice will be located. Mark the top attachment point for the eaves and measure down to the windowsill. This will give you the final height.

There are two ways to get the width:

  • take as a basis the width of the window sill
  • or measure the width of the window opening and add 12 cm to it.

Choose either of these two measurements to get the width of your shade.

Step 2. We count the number and height of folds

Now that you have the height and width of the future curtain, you can do all the calculations.

Usually 5 to 9 folds are made, depending on the height of the curtain. But you can make any odd number if needed.

Calculation example:

Curtain height: 124 cm
Top padding: 5 cm

Amount of pleat fabric: 124 - 5 = 119 cm

  • divide by 3: 119: 3 = 39.6 cm
  • divide by 5: 119: 5 = 23.8 cm
  • divide by 7: 119: 7 = 17 cm
  • divide by 9: 119: 9 = 13.2 cm

The calculation shows that 7 sections of 17 cm will look best.

For 7 sections, 3 rods are required.

Step 3. Calculate the amount of fabric for the front side

The length of the fabric for the front side = the length of the finished curtain + 5 cm for the top fold + 9 cm for the bottom fold.

Step 4. Calculate the amount of fabric for lining

The width of the cut of the lining material will be equal to the width of the finished curtain. This is due to the fact that when the curtain is ready, the width of the lining, taking into account the folds at the edges, will be slightly narrower. Therefore, you do not need to add additional centimeters.

Lining length is calculated taking into account the top and bottom twist and hem pockets.

Lining length = finished curtain length + 2cm for top hem + 2cm for bottom hem + 2.5cm for each twig pocket.

For example, if you should have 3 twigs, then you will need to add 7.5 cm.

Step 5. Preparing the lining

Cut to size for the lining and iron it well with an iron.

Then measure 2 cm on each side, fold them inward and iron the hem.

Measure with a ruler where you want the twig pockets to be. Step back 1.25 cm (half of 2.5 cm) from this line and draw a second. You will need to make a line along this line to form a pocket.

Fold the fabric along the line where the pocket should be. Sew the lining along the second line. This should create a twig pocket. Repeat this with the remaining pockets.

Step 6. Prepare the front side

Cut to size for the right side and iron well. Fold the sides and top 5 cm, and the bottom 9 cm. Iron the folds.

Step 7. Sew on the Velcro tape

In order for the curtain to be easily removed from the eaves, use a special textile Velcro tape - Velcro.

Sew the tape on the right side of the fabric just above the fold line.

Step 8. Connect the lining to the front side

Place the lining on top of the fabric for the right side. The lining should be 2 cm away from the edges on the sides. Secure the fabric with pins. Check with a ruler to see if the pockets line up with the front.

Fold the bottom of the face fabric in half to create a pocket for the weight. Cover the formed pocket with lining on top.

Hand-sew the lining to the face fabric using a hidden seam.

Sweep the corners, but leave room to insert the weight.

The lining in the corner should not be completely sewn on. This will allow the weight to be inserted and removed.

Fold over the top with Velcro and sew with a hidden seam as well.

Step 9. Sew on rings

The rings should be spaced 10 cm from the edges of the curtain and evenly across the entire width with an interval of 30 to 40 cm. If you are using a ready-made kit with a curtain rod, then make the number of rings according to it.

Measure with a ruler and mark where the rings should be attached.

Then sew the lining and the right side with several stitches where the rings should be attached, as well as at the point in the middle between them and at the edges.

Insert twigs into pockets.

Sew on rings according to the marks.

Step 10. Thread the cords and install the cornice

Hang the curtain rod over the window. Then use the duct tape to hang the curtain over the curtain rod.

Thread the cords through the rings and secure them at the ends with clamps or simply tie them in knots.
