Quality finish

Among the wide variety of finishing materials for ceilings - expanded polystyrene tiles, due to their low cost and ease of installation, are quite common. Moreover, the surface to be glued does not need careful preliminary preparation. It can hide many irregularities and defects. It is attached to the ceiling with glue.

How to glue with your own hands, and what kind of glue to glue ceiling tiles to be nice and cozy in the house?

Product types

Several types

For finishing the ceiling, manufacturers offer several types. They vary in quality, durability and cost.

This:

  • stamped- simple look. The manufacturer presses polystyrene granules under low pressure. The quality of the material does not stand out among others, which is the reason for the lowest price on the market. The material is fragile, and its front side is decorated with a three-dimensional pattern.

  • - the quality is higher than stamped. It is stronger and denser. in various shades water-based paint.

extruded

  • — strong, long term of operation, moisture resistant. It can be washed and cleaned. On the front side, most often laminated, therefore, operation in the bathroom, kitchens and bathrooms is possible.

Any type is produced by the manufacturer with dimensions of 50 * 50 cm. The thickness may vary. In addition to tiles, skirting boards and rosettes are available for complete renovations.

Advice! For dry rooms, a simple foam plastic is suitable. And for rooms with high humidity, you should choose a tile with a laminated coating, which is easy to wash and clean. It does not require additional coloring, as it is sold in different color scheme. For this material, glue for the ceiling master is suitable.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the products

So:

  • It's easy to work with her. No complex tools or fixtures required.
  • The coating can reliably imitate gypsum stucco, or other materials, if we are talking about laminated models.

  • If you have, then glued tiles will only slightly reduce the height, as opposed to hanging ones.
  • Has high sound and thermal insulation which allows you to make your home comfortable.
  • The material is not harmful to health, which allows the use for decoration in rooms for children and allergy sufferers of varying degrees.
  • A large assortment.

  • Variety of patterns, plus for finishing you can choose various options according to their financial capacity.
  • Possibility to lay on any surface.

Ceiling tiles, perhaps, have only two drawbacks. Cheap material burns perfectly, and high-quality compounds only melt - in both cases, toxic substances are released. The second drawback is complete vapor tightness.

Preparatory activities

Before sticking the tiles, you need to prepare the material and tools for work. We just need: a sharp knife, a ruler, a tape measure, a clean rag, optionally a glue gun.

  • Tiles should be bought from the same batch, because they may differ from each other, and a discrepancy between the parameters by a couple of millimeters already leads to a run-out of the seams.
  • Since the material has standard sizes, then it is quite simple to calculate how much it is required. We measure the length and width of the room with a tape measure. We multiply these values and divide by the area of one tile, which is exactly a quarter of a square meter.
  • You need to buy with a small margin, making a calculation for pruning. In order to give the repair a complete look, purchase skirting boards and sockets for chandeliers.
  • Choosing an adhesive composition. Everyone decides the best glue for himself, but we will consider them in the next chapter.

Advice! When cutting the tiles to length, first measure the desired dimensions and transfer them to the material, taking into account the orientation of the pattern. Having placed the tile on the table with the wrong side up, cut off the necessary pieces along the marked lines.

Which glue to choose

Before sticking the ceiling tiles, you need to remove the dust, otherwise there is a high probability of peeling off.

Adhesive for these purposes must meet the following requirements:

  • It must be highly adhesive. Since it is glued to the ceiling, and not to the floor, it is necessary that the glue sets quickly.
  • Possess viscosity, because the tile will not be able to stay on the ceiling with liquid glue. And it will also drip from the ceiling.
  • It is better if the glue is transparent or white color. In this case, the joints will be invisible.
  • In the process of gluing tiles, it is required to connect surfaces of different properties. Therefore, the adhesive must be suitable for any gluing different materials(glass, wood, concrete, drywall).
  • The composition of the adhesive should not contain a solvent. When it hits the tile, it is deformed.

Adhesive options:

  • Universal glue. The composition contains polymer components, with the help of which various materials are glued together. Its consumption is small. Universal adhesives have bad smell so the room should be ventilated. They have good viscosity, and this allows you to make quick tile laying. This type includes glue Master, Titanium, Mounting and others. Instructions on how to use it are on the packaging.

  • polyvinyl acetate compounds. These include PVA glue and bustilat. They do not have a strong smell, which is different from universal ones. The tiles on them are easily glued, but the consumption is much higher. For a strong fixation, both surfaces are coated with glue completely. After that, press the tile to the ceiling and wait for the glue to set. In terms of time, laying tiles with PVA takes longer than with universal glue.

  • Liquid Nails. The best adhesive for ceiling tiles. Convenient and reliable glue in work. It can be used to seal joints, seams and cracks. For gluing, it is better to use a gun, which will facilitate the work. In the process of gluing, it is applied dotted in the center and in the corners. Reliably sticks tiles even on uneven surfaces. It is used less often in work, so there is a large expense, so the price of repairs increases.

  • Acrylic putty - suitable for gluing any tile, including for fixing skirting boards. It is applied in a thin layer. After you need to press it to the surface and wait until the element is fixed. This results in beautiful, even seams.
  • Instant glue. It is called so - Moment, for a very quick grasp. This is convenient if you have a full hand, and you can immediately set the cover elements in the desired position. But the price of Moment is higher than that of other adhesives.

Preparing the surface for work

In order for the repair to take place with ease and without damage to the material, a small preparatory process should be carried out.

Before gluing, the old tile is removed. If the ceiling is whitewashed, then everything must be washed off. Remove crumbling layer of plaster. Large chips re-plaster and dry. If the ceiling was covered with wallpaper, then they should be removed and the surface cleaned of glue. After cleaning the entire surface, prime it and dry it.

After the preparatory work done, you can start pasting.

Installation

There are several options for stickers, but for those who do it for the first time, it will be easier to install it parallel to the walls.

Laying the first tiles, start from the center of the ceiling or from the place where the chandelier is located. We cut a hole under it with a clerical knife. You can not care about the evenness of the edges, since in the future this place will be closed with a rosette.

  • It is important at the same time to stick the first rows evenly, because the distortions cannot be eliminated. If, nevertheless, the rows go crooked, you will have to tear off the tile and stick a new one, which will lead to additional costs. In order to avoid this, make markings on the ceiling. Draw a few lines to guide you as you work.

Glue titanium

  • Apply glue dotted along the edges, in the center and diagonally. Try not to miss corners.
  • After you apply the glue, you need to wait a few minutes and then press the product to the ceiling. In the case of installation on liquid nails, it can be glued immediately after application.
  • Since the material is quite fragile, you do not need to do much effort, otherwise dents will remain or it will break and deteriorate. appearance.

  • All other products are laid in even, parallel rows. Leave a minimum gap between them. Remove excess adhesive immediately with a damp sponge. If seams occur during the process, they can be sealed with an acrylic sealant or putty.

For the snake in the center, mark a point, and from it draw two lines that cross diagonally. The first tile will be located at an angle to the center.

The remaining tiles in a spiral in two colors are glued around it. The chess arrangement also starts from the center. But the tiles are arranged, alternating colors, parallel to each other.

What kind of glue is better to glue, see above.

Advice! In order for the appearance of the ceiling to be beautiful and serve you for a long time, you should not save on the quality of the material. Choose a reliable and high-quality glue. Styrofoam is a fragile material and when choosing low-quality products, it will quickly become unusable.

In the photo - installation of ceiling plinths

  • After the entire ceiling is covered with products, install the skirting boards. Firstly, they will hide the defects between the wall and the ceiling, and secondly, they will add comfort and give a complete look to the room.
  • Now let the glue dry. After two or three days, apply a primer to the ceiling and baseboards, let it dry again and now you can paint the surface in any color you want.
  • In this case, it is better to use water-dispersion paint. If you have used laminated tiles, no surface painting is required.

After you have learned the whole process of gluing, and what to glue the ceiling tiles on, you can now easily do it yourself. You just need to be careful in your work. For a more complete presentation, watch the video.

Ceiling cladding with foam boards - cheap way renew the surface of the ceiling and give it a beautiful appearance. The richness of drawings and patterns and colors allow you to choose the best option that you like.

What you need to consider when choosing a material and how to properly glue the ceiling tiles, you will learn by reading the material to the end.

Types of foam materials

There are three types of tiles to consider when choosing. They have a different texture and differ not only in price, but also in surface quality.

extruded

Made of expanded polystyrene, it is characterized by high density and strength. There is a wide choice, including in terms of color, there are imitations of wood or marble. So even so cheap facing material may look rich and interesting.

It does not make sense to paint additionally such plates, moreover, the surface does not absorb paint due to high density. The paint just "rolls off". The thickness is only 2-3 mm.

Styrofoam

Large porosity, graininess is visible and looks more loose. Strength is achieved due to the thickness of 6-12 mm. Under pressure, a relief pattern is applied to the foam sheet. The low price is the advantage of the material, which determines its popularity.

injection

It has a clear pattern, there is a wide choice. It is baked in a special form, that is, you can choose an interesting relief. Good value for money makes injection material a popular cladding.

What is taken into account when choosing?

  • Correct product geometry. Make sure all corners are 90 degrees, there are no ripples at the edges, and the pattern is clearly visible. Remember: the miser pays twice, so don't try to save money on such a cheap cladding option.
  • The material from which the board is made. It should not break under its own weight. If you took it around the corner, then the plate should not crack in your hands. Increased porosity and brittleness - negative properties future cladding. It will be hard to work with it, besides, the lining will not last long.
  • A product with a smaller grain size is considered to be of higher quality, because it has a greater density and, consequently, strength.

How to calculate how much is needed?

  • Measure the area of the ceiling. To do this, the width of the room must be multiplied by the length, so you get the number square meters that need to be lined.
  • Decide on the format of the tile, the most commonly used size is 50x50. You can see what size suits you to avoid a lot of unnecessary trimming.
  • Material is always taken with a small margin for trimming and in cases of defective fragments or force majeure. Take 10% more.
  • If you want to combine two or more shades or textures of foam boards, you can calculate how many tiles you need per piece. Draw a laying pattern on paper and you will find out how many shades you need.

Choosing glue

  1. There are special adhesives for working with foam ceiling tiles. They are sold in small buckets in the form of mastic. Practical and economical option with low consumption. In addition, installation is simplified, and the foam quickly adheres to the base.
  2. Also popular are "liquid nails", superglue "Moment", as well as "Titan" and "Econaset". When using "liquid nails", be prepared for the fact that it will take several minutes with outstretched arms to stand and hold the plates so that they adhere securely and lock in the correct position. The "Moment" is the fastest to seize.
  3. If the ceiling is uneven and there are differences of more than a centimeter, of course, a plaster screed is required. Buy gypsum-based putty, such as Perfilks glue. Installation of foam will be carried out on a small layer of putty.

Foundation preparation

How to glue tiles on the ceiling? Where to begin? Before starting work, you need to prepare the ceiling, on which the durable ceiling cladding and ease of installation depend.

If there is a thick layer of whitewash on the ceiling, it is better to remove it. Styrofoam slabs weigh a little, but if the whitewash itself is already poorly held, then over time everything can fall off. You can clean off the whitewash layer with a small spatula or brush, after wetting the surface with water first.

The surface to be clad with expanded polystyrene boards must be relatively flat, clean and primed. Priming is mandatory to improve adhesion and further strengthen the base if it is loose. In this case, deep penetration primers are suitable.

If the whitewash holds well, you can prime it with a deep penetration primer, which will strengthen the base. After that, you can install the tiles on the old whitewash, which will save time.

Marking and choosing the method of placing tiles on the ceiling

The most common options for how to stick ceiling tiles are gluing in rows or diagonally. The sticker parallel to the walls is faster, a beautiful and regular geometry is created.

The right advice: how to properly glue ceiling tiles without seams - video

A diagonal sticker requires more trimming, but the seams are more difficult to see, and the pattern turns out to be intricate and interesting.

How to markup:

  1. You need to find the center of the room. To do this, take diagonally opposite corners and beat off the line. After that, repeat the procedure with another pair of corners. The intersection point of the corners will be the center of the room. If you plan to mount the slabs diagonally, then you already have guide lines. If you need lines for mounting in rows, beat off the line between opposite walls through the center of the room.
  2. Often the laying of plates starts from the chandelier. The corners of the plates are cut to make room for the wire, then the cut will hide the chandelier socket.
  3. Visually how to make markup is shown in the photo below.

You can choose not only plain tiles for the entire ceiling, but also combine several colors. Among the combined options are popular:

  • chess order;
  • snake;
  • alternating or intersecting diagonals;
  • darker shades of tiles are used around the perimeter of the ceiling.

It should be noted that the setting combined option is no different from installing plain tiles. It only takes a little attention so as not to confuse anything, as well as pre-calculate how much of which tile will be needed.

How to glue boards

Laying tiles on the ceiling is possible in two main ways. It all depends on the surface, on how smooth it is. Such a ceiling cladding is designed cheaply and angrily, to hide surface defects.

About the types of marriage or what to look for when buying - video

Often foam lining is considered as a temporary measure, and then you can easily remove it and make it more expensive and beautiful. stretch ceiling, For example. Depending on the differences, the method of fastening depends.

On a flat surface

In this case, adhesives for foam or polystyrene boards, we wrote more about possible materials for gluing above.

The technology of how to glue ceiling tiles with your own hands is as follows:

  • Glue is applied along the perimeter of the plate and diagonally. A thin layer is enough, no slippers are needed, no need to apply glue to the entire surface.
  • The tile is mounted in the right place, after which it must be held for several minutes until the glue “grabs”. Depending on the adhesive that you have chosen, you need to hold the tile from a few seconds to a minute or more.
  • We mount the next part of the cladding in the same way: we apply it to the right place on the ceiling, and then hold it so that it is securely fixed. You need to make sure that the pictures match. The result should be a solid picture, so make sure that there are no gaps and gaps between the tiles, and the pattern matches.
  • If there is a need for trimming, use a pencil and a paint knife for this. Mark with a pencil the dimensions you want to cut. Do not cut on the fly, but lay the tile on a level surface.

note

If it becomes necessary to touch up an already glued board, use a small wooden plank. Gently press it against the edge of the plate and try to move it to the desired distance. Do not do this by hand, because the foam materials are fragile and brittle, so you can easily break off a corner or the plate will crack.

On an uneven ceiling

Mounting on liquid nails or foam glue on a ceiling with visible irregularities will not work. There will be too much consumption, and these materials are not intended for leveling uneven bases.

In this case, putty mixtures can be used, which one depends on the magnitude of the differences. If they are within 5-7 mm, you can use finishing putty, if more - use starting rough mixes.

Video tips for pasting the ceiling with foam tiles with your own hands

How to glue ceiling tiles on an uneven ceiling:

  • Dilute the putty to the consistency of sour cream.
  • Apply the solution to the ceiling, using a notched trowel, remove excess. Notched trowel will save glue consumption and minimize the layer thickness. The solution is applied to the area of several fragments, after which laying begins.

    Do not apply too much solution at once, so that it is comfortable to work with, and it does not have time to set and dry.

  • Lay the first tile on the applied mortar, press it down to make sure it is fixed on the surface.
  • Align the edges of adjacent plates so that there are no gaps, check that the pattern matches.
  • You can check on the plane of the plate with a building level. With gentle movements, you can press the tile, which frankly protrudes. If this fails, remove the tile and remove the excess layer of putty underneath.

If the surface of the foam plates is embossed, then visually the differences will not be so noticeable. But still, watch the joints and check the plane with a level.

The advantage of this fastening method is that the cladding adheres immediately, so that the tile does not need to be pressed and held, and then wait for it to fix.

note

Do not lay tiles on a layer of putty more than the maximum indicator, otherwise everything may collapse.

Grouting

Ceiling tiles are laid by applying glue or putty to the front surface of the cladding. Immediately remove all remnants of adhesive mixtures, dried glue will be much more difficult to remove.

Fresh mortar is removed with a fiber, sponge or soft cloth. Pre-check the rag for the absence of lint and inability to shed. If it turns out that, despite your efforts, gaps have formed between the plates, they should be repaired.

Use putty that may have remained for this, or white acrylic sealant. Gently apply sealant to the seam, and remove excess with a wet finger or sponge. Acrylic will mask the gaps well, besides, it is in excellent contact with the foam.

Outcome
Styrofoam ceiling covering is an inexpensive but practical option if you need to improve the interior quickly and inexpensively. There are a lot of tips on how to stick tiles on the ceiling, we have given only some of them, you have the right to choose interesting option and implement it on your own.

In many apartments and houses you can see tiles on the ceiling. It is the most affordable and simple finishing method. How to glue ceiling tiles, what kind of glue to do it - we'll talk about this today.

What is this article about

What is ceiling tiles

Ceiling tiles are a very common method of cladding ceilings in residential and public buildings, offices and retail outlets. Typically, polystyrene products are used for these purposes. They are available in square or rectangular shapes with 90° corners. Polystyrene (aka polystyrene) is very easy to install, tolerates moisture well, and is environmentally friendly. Plates of this material can be smooth or with a relief pattern. On some copies, the front surface is finished with a film with the texture and color of the fabric, natural wood or stone. The edges of the tiles may have bevels.

Different models of products have different properties, require special methods of care. The tile with a film is well washed with water, without a film it is cleaned with a vacuum cleaner or a dry cloth. Expanded polystyrene products are available in several versions. They differ in manufacturing methods and appearance. Ceiling tiles can be:

  • pressed;
  • extruded;
  • injection.

The pressed tile is made from block polystyrene. In its manufacture, the stamping method is used. The thickness of the finished product is 6-8 mm. Extruded ceiling materials are produced by pressing from strip polystyrene. They have a glossy smooth surface. The colors of the products imitate natural wood shades, the colors of marble and stone. Injection products are manufactured by sintering the feedstock. They have the correct shape and a deep pattern on their surface. The thickness of such tiles is 9-14 mm.

In order for the gluing of ceiling tiles to take place efficiently and quickly, when buying material, you need to pay special attention to its dimensions. The form must be absolutely correct. Any deviation from it is a product defect. Correctly gluing tiles with marriage is impossible. There must be gaps between separate elements, which will have to be covered up, and this will lead to additional costs and damage to the aesthetic appearance of the ceiling. The individual grains of the material must be of the same size. The smaller they are, the higher the quality. The edges of the tiles should not crumble. If you take a quality product around the corner and lift it, it should not break. Cuts and dents are not allowed on the surface of the pattern.

Material Quantity Calculation

How to stick tiles on the ceiling correctly? To do this, you need to calculate required amount. In a rectangular or square room, this is quite easy to do, it is more difficult in a room with an irregularly shaped ceiling. For calculations you need to prepare:

  • paper;
  • pencil;
  • measuring tape.

When performing calculations, one should remember the following rule: we glue the ceiling tiles from the center of the ceiling to its edges. On paper, you need to draw the location of each tile. It should be noted that the rows of material can also be located diagonally. The side of the tile is usually 50 cm. Other sizes can sometimes be found. Whole tiles are quite easy to count. It is more difficult with trimming near the wall rows, especially when you have to combine the elements of the picture. In order not to make a mistake when buying, it is better to take the number of tiles per 10 percent more than the norm. With the cheapness of the material, this will not be very noticeable.

The choice of glue for work

Many owners of apartments and houses believe that it is possible to mount a ceiling covering with any adhesive composition. You can attach tiles to the ceiling with high quality only with good glue. Manufacturers of facing products have long developed special formulations for gluing various materials. For different types polystyrene ceiling products have their own adhesive composition. What glue to glue the ceiling tiles, how to choose it correctly? To make a choice, you need to know some indicators:

  • the adhesive composition must fasten the finishing material with the base so that later the work does not have to be redone;
  • tiles must adhere quickly;
  • glue consumption should be quite reasonable: the higher the adhesion, the lower the consumption;
  • the adhesive should be well applied both in a very thin and thick layer.

There is a tile adhesive with minimal consumption. It is based on liquid rubber. Any adhesive composition should be applied to the surface of the facing material and slightly dried. Many use the following compositions:

  • "Eco-naset";
  • "Titanium";
  • "Moment";
  • "Liquid Nails".

These compositions well and quickly glue the tiles to the ceiling. It just needs to be pressed and held for a few seconds. The glued tile material is held very firmly. "Eco-naset" and "Titan" glue tiles made of PVC and other materials well, but dry for a very long time. It is better to use the domestic "Moment". It dries up in a few seconds. The same can be said about the Liquid Nails glue.

How to glue the ceiling tiles? The surface of the ceiling must be prepared. The quality and speed of installation of the cladding depends on the quality of the preparation. The old coating must be completely cleaned off. If the ceiling was covered with wallpaper, they should be removed without fail. From the surface covered with lime, it is necessary to completely wash off its layer. You can leave only a layer of paint if it does not peel off. If the paint cracks, it is also removed completely with a spatula. The ceiling has been cleared. Now it needs to be primed. It is better to use a deep penetration primer to perform this operation. The primed surface dries for at least a day. You cannot work during this time.

The dried ceiling should be carefully examined again. If they show up dark spots, various recesses, then the ceiling should be puttied. After the putty has dried, apply another layer of primer and dry again. A day after that, proceed to the installation of tiles.

Gluing tiles

How to glue tiles on the ceiling? First, let's prepare the necessary tool:

  • roulette;
  • building level;
  • pencil;
  • paint cord;
  • sharp knife;
  • ruler;
  • high table;
  • brush;
  • putty knife;
  • glue.

The tools are ready. How to glue ceiling tiles with your own hands? It is necessary to mark on the prepared surface of the ceiling. Laying is usually carried out from the center. To determine it, you need to stretch the cord from corner to corner diagonally. The intersection of the two cords will be the center of the room. Often a chandelier hangs in this place. If this is the case, then the corners of the tile need to be cut a little. This place will later be covered with a figured glass, which is on each chandelier. 4 elements are lubricated with glue and applied alternately to the ceiling. Then other tiles join them. At the wall they will have to be cut. This is done with a sharp knife along the ruler. A cut piece of tile is placed against the wall.

You can glue the tiles on the ceiling in another way. Work begins from the wall opposite the door. Glue is applied to several sheets of material and aged for some time. This time is indicated on the package. Then the tiles are glued to the base one after another. Lastly, ceiling plinths are attached.

Other Mounting Methods

How to glue ceiling tiles in other ways? You can combine colors. Most common options: intersecting or parallel diagonals different color, snake, gluing panels of different colors in the center of the ceiling or along its perimeter, gluing the ceiling with dark and light tiles in a checkerboard pattern.

How to glue foam ceiling tiles? You can stick it directly on the whitewash:

  • by primer;
  • along the partially scraped ceiling.

The old whitewash on the ceiling is covered with a primer. It adheres well to the base. After it has completely dried, glue the foam tiles. You can partially scrape off the whitewash with a spatula. Then apply a layer of glue on the product and glue the tile, holding it for several minutes with your hands.

Conclusion on the topic

Updating the coating on the ceiling is a rather difficult task. You can use different facing materials: suspended and tension structures, panels of mirror panels different shapes. But the most common finishing material is foam ceiling tiles, how to glue and different ways to place it on the ceiling were discussed above. The matter of choice for each individual owner is how to glue the ceiling tiles. This business also depends on the financial capabilities of the family. The tiled ceiling in the apartment is the decoration of the house. It is possible to glue ceiling tiles correctly only on a specially prepared base. Styrofoam tiles stick well only on a flat surface.

How to stick ceiling tiles - this question worries many. This is a very light material that does not weigh down the structure of the ceiling. When to stick tiles on the ceiling: before wallpapering the walls or after? This is also a challenge for many. The pasted ceiling will not cause any harm to the walls. Therefore, it is better to start repairs with it. We also learned how to properly glue ceiling tiles and what kind of glue to use. It remains to prepare tools, materials and start repairs. After installing the tiles, you will have no questions about how to stick the tiles on the ceiling. White sealant can be used to seal the joints if the tiles are white. And most importantly, everything can be done by hand.

Expanded polystyrene tiles are one of the most popular types of ceiling coverings. Therefore, the question of how to glue ceiling tiles is of interest to many novice craftsmen who plan to do the finishing work with their own hands.

How to choose a tile for finishing the ceiling?

The great popularity of this decorative material due to its following advantages:

  • simple installation - everyone can handle gluing tiles;
  • easy care - foam tiles can be washed with any non-abrasive agent;
  • the ability to hide small defects in the base;
  • speed of finishing - a small base (for example, a ceiling in a bathroom) can be easily decorated in a few hours;
  • low cost - prices for ceiling tiles are quite low, so everyone can afford such a finish.

For successful completion repair work 3 questions need to be answered:

  • how to choose a facing material so that it lasts for many years;
  • how to glue the selected finish option so that it does not fall off;
  • how to properly glue ceiling tiles so that the ceiling is not only reliable, but also attractive.

In the domestic market, ceiling tiles are presented in a wide range. Various Models differ among themselves in color and texture design, production technology, geometric dimensions, quality of expanded polystyrene and cost. Therefore, before gluing tiles to the ceiling, you need to choose the right finishing material.

According to the production method, ceiling tiles are divided into 3 types:

  1. Injection. It has a low density and, accordingly, strength, and therefore it costs less than other types of finishes. Its thickness is no more than 14 mm. Such a tile is made by sintering foamed plastic, which is why it is called foam.
  2. Stamp. It is characterized by a denser structure and mechanical strength. The thickness of the product is 6-8 mm. It is made by pressing polystyrene foam at high temperatures.
  3. extruded. It is the most expensive and highest quality tile. With high density and strength, its thickness is about 3 mm, which saves extra millimeters when finishing free space. During the production process, the tile is covered with a laminated layer, which not only improves its appearance, but also protects it from the harmful effects of moisture. This allows you to use the material in rooms with high humidity (bathroom, kitchen).

By choosing suitable type products, its color and pattern, you need to check the quality of the material and its geometric dimensions. The first step is to inspect the edges of the sheets - they should be dense and consist of small granules. The smaller the granules, the better. Then the strength of the material is checked. To do this, from the selected batch, you need to take one element by the edge and shake it a little. If at the same time it does not deform or break, then its quality is good.

Each tile must have the correct geometric dimensions. For example, if it is a square, then all the edges must be the same length and the corners must be 90°, that is, they must not be rounded or flattened. Only in this case you will be able to finish the ceiling without seams.

Choosing a ceiling tile adhesive

When answering the question of how to glue a ceiling tile, one cannot ignore the glue, which is the connecting link between the base and the finishing material. The adhesive composition for cladding ceilings must have the following properties:

  • strength and reliability;
  • quick grasp;
  • good adhesion;
  • environmental safety;
  • the ability to lay down both thin and thick layers.

If everything is more or less clear with the first four points, then the last one needs a little pause for clarification. Most old-style apartments do not have flat ceilings; they can have height differences of more than 15 mm. How to finish in this case? There are two ways to get out of this situation: before facing, level the ceiling or use glue that can be applied in a thick layer. The first option is not optimal, since it requires additional financial investments from the contractor. That's why the best option is the application of the adhesive composition in a thick layer, thereby simultaneously leveling and finishing the ceiling base.

Gluing tiles on a flat ceiling can be done using adhesives such as liquid nails, "Moment", "Eco-naset" or "Titan". They have excellent adhesion to any coating, be it plaster, wallpaper or other material, and a fast drying time, which greatly facilitates installation work.

What to glue foam tiles on an uneven ceiling? In this case the best option the usual putty and glue for tiles or drywall acts. These compounds can be applied in layers up to 40 mm, thereby leveling even large height differences.

Preparatory work

Every renovation process starts with preparatory work. And finishing the ceiling with tiles in this regard is no exception. Before gluing this material, you must do the following:

  • choose a laying scheme;
  • calculate the required number of tiles;
  • prepare the ceiling for finishing.

There are different ways to place tiles on the ceiling relative to the walls, the most popular are (Fig. 1):

  • rows;
  • in a checkerboard pattern (with a shift);
  • diagonally.

Each styling option allows you to create a specific pattern that is best suited to a specific design idea.

To calculate the required amount finishing material it is necessary to make drawings on a piece of paper in a box in the selected scale, which indicate the dimensions of the room and the layout of the tiles. It should be noted that the standard dimensions of the ceiling tiles are 50x50 cm. You can start laying from the center of the room or from the wall opposite the window. If there is a chandelier in the center of the ceiling, then it is recommended to start finishing from it (Fig. 2).

After that, according to the drawing, the number of whole tiles and the number of elements that will be cut off are counted. If gaps remain near the walls, the width of which will be less than the width of the tile (less than 25 cm), then in this case 1 element will go to cover two rows. If the size of the gaps is more than 25 cm, then you should buy tiles at the rate of 1 piece per 1 row.

How to glue the tiles so that they do not fall off over time? To do this, it is necessary to properly prepare the finishing surface. First, the ceiling is cleared of poorly held old finish and treated with a deep penetration primer. If the base has deep cracks and chips, then they should additionally be repaired with putty. Before finishing, it is recommended to prime a ceiling made of chipboard or plywood with a special mixture with abrasive additives that increase the adhesion of the material. After the primer dries, you can glue.

How beautiful to glue the ceiling? First you need to correctly draw the finishing base and designate its center. For this, two cords are taken, which are pulled from opposite corners diagonally. The point of their intersection will be the center of the room. Then they retreat from this point by 25 cm (half of the tile) and draw lines along which the first element will be glued.

Do-it-yourself tile gluing

Before gluing the tiles, you need to prepare the following tools and materials:

  • ladder;
  • spatula, if a drywall mixture or putty will be used as glue;
  • roulette;
  • stationery knife;
  • mounting gun;
  • tiles;
  • adhesive composition;
  • white sealant.

How to apply glue to the tile depends on what composition will be used. If gluing will be done using putty or cement mixture, then the glue is applied pointwise so as not to increase the weight of the finishing material. If it is planned to use "Titan", liquid nails or another similar composition, then it is applied around the entire perimeter of the tile with a thickness of 20-30 mm, and a small spot is also made in the center.

After applying the glue, you need to leave the tile alone for a few minutes so that the glue dries a little. After that, the finishing material is applied to the ceiling along the markings and pressed with uniform efforts over the entire area. Before mounting each subsequent element, it is applied dry to its place to see how it will lie down and whether it will spoil the drawing. The tiles in the last row, if necessary, are cut with a clerical knife on a hard surface. At the last stage finishing works ceiling plinth is glued.

Before gluing tiles, all windows and doors in the room must be closed to prevent drafts, because they adversely affect the strength of the hitch.

If for some reason small gaps have formed in some places, then you should not be upset, as they can be sealed with white sealant. After the sealant dries, it will need to be painted over.

There is nothing complicated in gluing ceiling tiles. The only thing that can cause difficulties is the marking of the ceiling, since it must be done as accurately as possible. If everything is done correctly, then the do-it-yourself ceiling will look no worse than if the installation work was carried out by the repair team.

One of the most economical ways to finish the ceiling is to glue the ceiling tiles. This process has a number of nuances, so it is important to learn the basic rules for gluing tiles with your own hands, as well as how to lay them.

Types of tiles

All models of ceiling tiles differ in their density, texture, and composition. Consider the main types.

plastic

Plastic tiles are quite durable and of high quality, but they are far from environmentally friendly. It is easy to care for such a ceiling: plastic can be washed and cleaned different ways. It has the ability to fade, so this material is not suitable for rooms flooded with sun.

extruded

Such material has a smooth surface without particularly convex relief elements. As a rule, extruded boards have a thickness of no more than 3 mm, although the material is dense. Manufacturers present models of different colors. Some of them imitate marble and wood.

Extruded tiles should not be painted. because the paint does not adhere well to the surface. The stores offer a wide selection of models with different patterns in different colors. Extruded tiles are made from expanded polystyrene. She is easy to care for. It does not create difficulties in the gluing process.

The only downside to extruded tiles is their high price.

Styrofoam

In another way, it is called stamped or PVC. In composition, it is more loose. The surface of such tiles is grainy and porous.

The presence of a large number of pores on the surface makes it difficult to care for foam tiles. They get clogged with dirt, the color of the tiles fades. To avoid this problem, such material is often coated with paint. But water-based formulations are not suitable. It is advisable to use acrylic dispersion paints for painting such ceiling tiles.

In thickness, each plate is from 6 to 8 mm, depending on the specific model. The pattern on it is squeezed out using the technology of a large press. This tile has a huge drawback: it is loose, quickly breaks, deteriorates, translucent. Difficulties cause her pruning. Therefore, you should purchase such models with a margin. The big advantage of foam tiles is the low cost.

injection

Such varieties are made from polystyrene foam, which is baked in a certain shape, creating the desired pattern on the surface. The drawings are clearer than those of previous analogues, the texture is more interesting. This material has an average cost and quality. Manufacturers allow painting this material. With the help of such tiles, you can make a completely seamless ceiling, so it is in demand.

The big advantage of this composition is fireproof and environmental friendliness. Such material has good sound insulation and does not deteriorate from high humidity. However, it is always produced in white, so it is often dyed with different compositions after installation.

Most types of ceiling tiles are produced in 50 by 50 cm squares. But there are also non-standard rectangular tile models.

By edge type

Exist different types ceiling tiles, which differ in the type of edging. There are models:

  • with straight edges without a seam;
  • having clear edges between each plates;
  • with curvy edges that look more interesting.

A different type of edge does not affect the gluing of the ceiling tiles, it only changes the appearance of the ceiling.

according to drawing

Models are divided according to the type of drawing. Eat interesting views tiles with:

  • geometric print;
  • floral ornament;
  • lace motifs;
  • imitation of plaster moldings;
  • concise lines.

A neutral option is a smooth tile without a pattern. From the rich selection presented by modern manufacturers for sale, you can choose an option for finishing the ceiling for every taste and budget.

Surface preparation

Before gluing the tiles, it is necessary to carefully prepare the surface of the ceiling. In order for the result of the work to please, and the tiles to stay on the ceiling for a long time, a number of rules must be observed. The ceiling must be cleaned of old coatings. The whitewashed ceiling should be thoroughly washed off, the plastered layer, wallpaper and paint should be peeled off and removed. Depending on the type of coating, a spatula or a perforator can be used for this.

Then it is necessary to correct the defects that remained on the cleaned ceiling. More often, cracks, bulges and depressions appear on it. To fix an uneven ceiling, putty should be used. With the help of this composition, defects can be grouted. Putty is able to correct defects of any complexity.

After the putty has dried (after about 12 hours), it is necessary to start priming the ceiling. It is better to apply the primer in several layers, observing a certain time interval, so that each layer dries completely. The primer will improve the adhesion of the tile to the ceiling surface and make such a coating more reliable.. It will make the overlap homogeneous due to penetrating power.

An exceptional option for surface preparation is when the whitewash is in good condition and securely adheres to the ceiling. In this case, the ceiling is not cleaned of whitewash, but immediately primed. However, it is worth considering: on such a basis, the tiled coating will not be able to hold on for a long time, over time it will move away, it may be deformed. This solution should be resorted to only if you need urgent cosmetic repairs.

Surface preparation with a primer is different depending on the type of ceiling:

  • For concrete ceiling should apply special compound called betonokontakt.
  • Gypsum ceiling is best treated with a deep penetration agent.
  • If the room is damp, it is worth treating the surface of the base with a primer with an antiseptic effect in order to exclude the appearance of an environment for microorganisms.

If the ceiling is loose and loose, it must be primed. After the preparatory composition is absorbed, you can proceed to gluing the tiles.

Adhesive selection

For gluing, standard types of glue are usually used ("Titan", "Moment" or "Naset"). These compounds are quite common and have an average cost. However, some of them create difficulties in the gluing process. For example, after applying the adhesive, the tile must be pressed against the ceiling for 5 to 10 seconds and fully held.

Moment glue has the fastest action of these compounds.. It sets in about 3 seconds. Before gluing the ceiling tiles with it, it is necessary to keep the composition in the air for a certain time. After that, the fragment should be firmly pressed to the base. Ceiling tiles are often glued liquid nails. They are able to fix coatings well, they are also used for the reconstruction of ceilings.

For gluing ceiling tiles often use a special mastic. It is sold in buckets and has a pasty texture. Such glue is much easier to use because it is flexible: each element of the coating is immediately fixed on the ceiling, it does not need to be held for a long time. Mastic and tile adhesive are used only for ceilings with a flat surface.

If there are defects or irregularities on the ceiling, gypsum-based putty is used for pasting. Besides her you can stick coatings on an uneven ceiling using a composition called Knauf. It is suitable for 5mm height drops. For large defects, the ceiling should be initially leveled.

Sticking schemes

There are several common options for laying tiles on the ceiling.

Classic scheme

It involves placing tiles in rows close to each other along the walls. Sticking starts from the central part. This solution is resorted to if a seamless tile for the ceiling is used. By gluing tiles according to the classical scheme, you can create an integral surface.

Classic styling has a second interpretation. In the process of gluing, the tiles are applied with a shift so that each row is half the slab ahead of the previous one. So the ceilings become lighter and airier.

It is better to choose types of gluing depending on the height of the ceiling in a particular room.

Diagonal (oblique)

This is the most common option, it is universal, because it is suitable for any size rooms. To lay tiles in this way, mark up diagonal lines in advance so that the tiles run along them. However gluing diagonally involves a large consumption of finishing material. You will be left with a lot of scraps.

Visually, placing tiles diagonally (rhombus) looks more presentable. Seams with such styling are almost invisible. Placement of tiles diagonally must start from the chandelier. It is important to control the correct laying in such a way that all the plates go strictly along the lines.

Diagonals can be drawn using threads, marking them with their help.

There are a number of rules that should be followed in order to properly tile the ceiling diagonally:

  • The first element must be positioned so that it is at an angle of 45 degrees from each wall of the room.
  • Then the following tile elements must be attached closely to the central element.
  • After that, it is necessary to make an even docking of all subsequent elements until the entire surface of the ceiling is covered with tiles.

If you follow these rules, you can carry out an elegant and interesting styling.

Checkerboard

To finish the ceiling in this way, it is necessary to purchase materials in two different shades. Usually choose contrasting color solutions. Sticking comes from the center of the ceiling. In this case, the edges of the tiles are placed parallel to the side walls. Gluing occurs by the method of alternation. This creates a checkerboard effect on the ceiling.

The advantage of this type of gluing is the fact that it is able to hide the unevenness of the base.

Snake styling

This styling scheme is a combination of two shades. Colors can be contrasting and similar. Sticking is carried out starting from the center of the room in such a way that a graphic-type image of a snake is obtained. Usually they try to simplify this process by acquiring a plain tile, and only then, after laying, they paint it with water-based paint in different colors.

Calculation of the amount of materials

Calculating the amount of material that will be spent on finishing the ceiling is quite simple. It is necessary to find out the surface area of the ceiling. If the room is rectangular, you can multiply the length by the width of the room by measuring the walls with a tape measure. When the room has non-standard outlines, it is necessary to measure all the walls separately.

It is desirable to display them on the plan in the form of a picture. After that, the resulting drawing must be divided into rectangles and squares and the area of each figure must be calculated on a scale. Then you need to add the area dimensions of all the obtained elements. So you will find out the surface area of the entire ceiling in a non-standard room.

If you chose a standard 50 x 50 cm tile for decoration, the area of such a product will be 1/4 sq. m. Accordingly, four tiles will cover 1 square. m. ceiling. To simplify the calculations, you can divide the total area of the ceiling by the area of the ceiling tile. As a result, you will get the amount of material needed for gluing.

Now manufacturers present models whose size varies: 40 x 40, 60 x 60, 30 x 70 cm and 30 x 60 cm. Calculations in this case should be approached with more seriousness, calculating the area of the tile to buy the right number of packages. Even after making calculations, tiles must be purchased with a margin so that it is enough to cover the entire ceiling and trim. This is especially true when you plan to place it not according to the classical scheme.

Do not forget that in the process of gluing it may break or deteriorate. Need to buy about 10% more tiles than what you calculated.

pasting process

The easiest way to glue even ceilings. For this type of surface, foam or polystyrene tiles are perfect. First you need to spread the adhesive on the surface of the tile. It is necessary to follow a certain technology: glue is applied around the perimeter of the tile and diagonally. The entire surface of the tile should not be covered with glue.

Before gluing, markup is drawn to make it easier to place tiles on the ceiling. Then the tile must be applied to the place allotted for it. Having applied the tile, you need to smooth it over the entire surface with light hand movements. Then you need to wait a few seconds. Exact time depends on the type of adhesive chosen.

Further, gluing is simplified. Each next tile must be attached clearly to the edge of the element already fixed on the ceiling. If there are patterns on the surface of the plate, they must be combined and joined correctly. First you need to adjust the pattern, and only then stick the rest of the plate. The joint must be perfectly level.

The surfaces must be completely adjacent to each other, otherwise the ceiling will be uneven. Each edge must be aligned with an accuracy of 1 mm, otherwise, even due to such a small unevenness, all coatings will move, the ceiling will look bad, there will be gaps. This procedure must be repeated with all tile elements. When you get to the walls, you need to trim the extreme elements. Before trimming, it is better to try on and draw markings on the stove. You need to cut the tile evenly so that there is no gap between the outer tile and the side wall.

The minimum gap at the wall can be hidden ceiling plinth. If in the process of gluing tiles you notice that 1 square does not fit very evenly to another, there is a small gap between them, you need to carefully move these elements. For this, it is better to use a wooden plank. It must be strongly pressed against the free edge of the tile and smoothly (with pressure) move, removing the gap. If you start moving the tile with your hands, you will simply break the coating.

Upon completion of the laying process, you can proceed to painting the tiles, if necessary. The easiest way to cover this material is with acrylic-based water-based paint.. To qualitatively coat the tiles with paint without gaps, you need to work with a foam roller.

The paintwork must be applied in 2 or 3 layers, depending on the desired saturation of the shade. In order for the paint to lay down smoothly and efficiently, you need to apply a layer of primer to the surface of the tile.

How to glue the ceiling tiles, see the next video.

Seam putty

In the process of gluing, not everyone succeeds the first time to qualitatively arrange the seams between the elements of the ceiling coverings. Often there is a gap between them. If small gaps were formed during the work, after laying the tiles they can be covered with white acrylic sealant. It must be gently squeezed into the cracks so that it fills them. After that, you need to get rid of excess glue.

Sealant is sold in the form of spray cans with an elongated nozzle. So the composition can be easily squeezed out exactly where it is needed. A thin tube easily penetrates even the thinnest cracks. To cover the seams with sealant, you must use a gun. Sealant must be distributed evenly so as not to stain the surface. This tool will not only cover the seams, but also fix the coating on the ceiling.

Some craftsmen claim that gluing tiles to whitewash is unacceptable. They indicate that the lime layer quickly peels off together with the tile after some time. They advise getting rid of the chalk before sticking. During the gluing process, it is usually difficult to cover the ceiling along the edge at the walls. It is important to ensure that the extreme rows are of the same size and run strictly parallel to the walls when it comes to classic installation.

In order for the tile to always look beautiful, you need to properly care for it. Tiled ceiling (especially embossed) accumulates a lot of dust. The surface darkens and loses its former gloss. That's why it is necessary to carry out dry cleaning at least once a month with a vacuum cleaner or a soft brush.

Wet cleaning should be done every two months with a mop. To clean such a ceiling, it is necessary to use only the most gentle detergents. A mild soap solution is ideal for this. At the end wet cleaning the ceiling must be wiped with a dry cloth to remove moisture and stains.
