Ornamental deciduous houseplants: what are they?

What is it and how to define this group if there are two names. Ornamental-leaved and ornamental-deciduous houseplants - how correctly and how do they differ? Both names are correct and denote the plants that are bought primarily for their beautiful leaves or colors. The accepted division into decorative-flowering and decorative-leaved is based only on visual perception and has nothing to do with botany. You can find out the name of decorative leafy plants on this page, where the most popular crops are offered.

Look at the decorative foliage plants in the photo, where specimens of unusual shape and color are presented:

Along with many attractive decorative flowering crops, there are no less decorative leaf species that are also able to decorate any home due to interesting shapes and colors of various leaves.

From the point of view of science, most of the decorative leafy species belong to flowering plants. All plants that propagate by seeds bloom, although their flowers may be completely inconspicuous.

Since all our indoor crops, which are called decorative leaf crops, come from warm countries, they bloom with us very rarely or do not bloom at all. If the plants do bloom in your room, then in this way they demonstrate that the conditions created fully meet their needs. Many of these species are large trees at home, but in a pot and in other climates they retain the size of young plants. So, decorative leaf species are primarily distinguished by their leaves, which, depending on the accessory or variety, can be small or large, velvety or leathery, smooth, embossed or rough. Often they are decorated with a chic pattern or stand out with an unusual shape.

Ornamental deciduous houseplants include more than 150 varieties, united into one group according to a common feature: the presence of beautiful, spectacular foliage. These plants bloom 1-2 times a year, but the flowers of most species are not particularly attractive. Deciduous species in themselves are an adornment of any interior, they often become a magnificent backdrop for flowering specimens.

Indoor plants with variegated and openwork leaves give the interior a festive and elegant, and at the same time, an unusually refined, sophisticated look.

Ornamental foliage plants include a huge group of flowers with interesting and attractive leaves. various shapes, sizes and shades. The color of the leaf plates is varied: rich green, yellow, red, purple, violet. In some species, the shade of the leaves changes depending on the light or the season.

The leaves can be large, like dracaena, monstera or begonias. On other flowers, such as nephrolepis fern, Benjamin's ficus and asparagus, the foliage is small but equally attractive. The leaf plates can be very unusual in shape: strongly dissected, lobed, serrated, wavy or jagged edges.

Ornamental deciduous plants are less demanding on lighting conditions compared to flowering species. But for them timely and uniform watering, temperature and humidity are very important. Improper care can lead to drying and darkening of leaf tips. Often decorative view is lost due to lack of nutrients.

Among deciduous indoor flowers, specimens with openwork leaf plates and flowers with variegated leaves decorated with a pattern of lines or spots, yellow, cream, purple or white stripes are especially appreciated for their extraordinary attractiveness. Such variegated plants are also called variegated.

Variegated (variegated) plants

Variegated plants are highly decorative and are highly valued by flower growers. But it is quite difficult to grow them, since most of the species are capricious and whimsical. They require constant attention and care, they are sensitive to the slightest changes in environmental conditions.

The fact is that light stripes and spots on leaf plates are caused by a change in the normal genotype. Deviations from the genetic norm weaken the plants, as a result of which their susceptibility to external conditions increases. That is why variegated plants require increased attention and special conditions of detention.

Interestingly, variegation is not a species trait and is not always transmitted to daughter plants, even during vegetative propagation.

Care features

Variegated indoor flowers require competent care: providing a suitable level of illumination, temperature and humidity. Also, the development and growth of plants is affected by the composition of the soil mixture, the availability of nutrients.

Illumination

Most species prefer bright, diffused light. At lunchtime, these plants need to be shaded. Failure to comply with the light conditions leads to the fact that the variegated leaf plates become completely green.

Temperature regime

Depending on the temperature that plants prefer, they are divided into three groups:

  1. cold-hardy - in winter they require a temperature drop to 8–12 ° С (oleander, some types of palms, hosts, agaves);
  2. growing at any positive temperature (ficus, dracaena, tradescantia);
  3. thermophilic - should be kept annually at a temperature of about 25 ° C, not lower (Kentia, date palm).

Watering and moisture

In spring and summer, plants are watered abundantly, but only after the topsoil has dried to a thickness of 5 cm. In winter, the frequency of watering is reduced. To maintain soil moisture between waterings, wet moss, expanded clay or pebbles are placed in a pan with a pot. It is especially important to have a pallet with a moist substrate for plants that form aerial roots - philodendrons, monsters.

Plants prefer moist air. You need to spray them with soft water up to 2 times a week and wipe the leaves every 7–10 days.

Priming

The soil should be light and porous, air and water permeable. Also, the soil must be moisture-absorbing, retain moisture well. For planting variegated decorative deciduous species, you can purchase a special ready-made soil or prepare a soil composition yourself by mixing:

  • sod land (6 parts);
  • sheet soil (2 parts);
  • peat substrate (2-3 parts);
  • coarse sand (1 part).

By themselves, variegates develop very slowly, and on dense ground their growth almost completely stops.

After preparing the soil, you need to check its acidity using a litmus test. The mixture for growing these plants must be neutral (pH 6.0 - 7.0).

Top dressing

Variegates respond well to:

  1. mineral fertilizers - nitrophosk, nitroammofosk (applied in the phase of active growth every 2-3 weeks);
  2. slow release granular mineral supplements;
  3. diluted infusion of wood ash (applied once a month if peat is present in the soil to reduce the acidity of the soil mixture).

With an excess of nitrogen fertilizers, leaf plates may lose their variegated color.

Openwork plants

The main feature of openwork plants is the presence of many small, very beautiful details that you want to admire endlessly. The most famous fishnet species are ferns. But this group also includes other species with a complex patterned structure of leaf plates, small-leaved flowers, plants with the finest stems.

Correctly selected openwork plants completely transform the interior.

Openwork flowers can revive any interior space, focus on a separate area, or, conversely, divert attention from an unsightly detail. A home flower with lace leaves looks especially impressive when placed at the level of countertops, coffee tables. But when choosing a place for such plants, it is important to take into account their important feature: even compact specimens strongly conceal the space, visually reduce it.

As for leaving, then general rules for this group, no, since openwork plants include plants of the most different structure, character and growth form. And the requirements of each species for lighting, watering, temperature, humidity and other conditions of detention will be different.

Common types

The group of openwork plants is very extensive, but some of them are more common than others in home floriculture.

  1. Corokia cotoneaster. A densely branching shrub with a lush spherical crown from 30 to 80 cm high. The plant is openworked by zigzag growing thin branches intertwining with each other. Young twigs with a dense white edge darken over time, but the image of an openwork grayish cloud remains. The leaves of the corokia are very small, rather dark on top, and almost white on the bottom.
  2. Home (indoor) fern. An extensive group of plants, among which there are compact classic species and large exotic specimens. Most often, flower growers grow maidenhair (hair venus), selaginella, nephrolepis, davallia, pellei, pteris.
  3. Grevillea. A tree-like plant with dark green glossy leaf plates covered with a silvery or bronze bloom. The effect of lace is created by highly dissected leaf plates arranged in tiers. In indoor conditions, the tree reaches a height of 50 cm to 1.5 m, while in nature the grevillea can grow up to 50 m. Grevillea does not tolerate neighborhood and requires a lot free space around. It is usually placed on the floor in spacious rooms, offices and lobbies.

Openwork grevillea.

The group of decorative deciduous plants includes a huge number of species. These are tree-like forms and ferns, climbing plants and vines, false palms and many others. The conditions of their maintenance may differ significantly, but the common invariable feature of all specimens is curly shoots or amazingly beautiful leaves: bright motley, light lace, large lobed or strongly dissected. These plants do not need to bloom. Their magnificent appearance, even without buds, serves as an excellent decoration for any interior space.

It would be just silly to have a piece of land and use it only for garden planting. Even on a small piece of land, you can find a place to organize a recreation area, plant ornamental plants for the garden, put up a gazebo or at least a comfortable bench.

The choice of beautiful and unpretentious plants is so great that they can be selected for any climatic conditions, plot size and according to your preferences. These are trees, shrubs, perennial flowers and herbs.

Trees and shrubs

Planting such plants allows literally in a matter of hours to turn a former construction site or wasteland into a multi-colored oasis, if shrubs or ornamental trees for the garden are bought already grown, in tubs, and transplanted with a lump of earth. The main thing is to study their requirements for soil quality and the degree of frost resistance, and choose the ones that will feel best on your site.

All trees and bushes are divided into three types: flowering, evergreen and decorative deciduous plants for the garden.

Flowering shrubs

Such flowering ornamental shrubs for the garden, such as acacia, rose hips or lilacs, are known to everyone and need no introduction.

Let's talk about others with a more exotic look.

  • Rhododendron. It blooms in spring with whole bunches of flowers, which, depending on the variety, can have a very unusual color. Incredibly beautiful, but very picky about temperature regime - may freeze in winter. Therefore, it is grown only in the southern regions. To the climate middle band few varieties have been adapted.
  • Camellia. An even more thermophilic evergreen plant that begins flowering in autumn. Camellia has a very beautiful dark green glossy foliage that provides all year round.

Council. Try growing camellias as a potted crop if you have somewhere to take them for the winter.

  • Forsythia. It blooms very early, when foliage does not appear on all trees, so spring pruning is unacceptable. The entire bush is covered with large yellow bells, behind which no branches are visible. Looks especially impressive on.
  • Tamarisk. This plant will decorate your decorative garden with its unusual appearance: in spring it will be covered with pink fluffy frost from small flowers... After flowering, it is recommended to form a bush, and in the fall to prune diseased and dry branches.

  • Spirea. It blooms very profusely - the ends of the branches are completely covered with flowers. The flowering time of different varieties is different, which makes it possible to enjoy the beauty from spring to autumn, if you plant several plants of this species.

Evergreen shrubs and trees

These primarily include conifers - decorative spruces for the garden, pines, thuja and other representatives of this species. They will not please you with flowers, but at your dacha all year round there will be greens.

Of course, ship pines and blue spruces are suitable only for large areas, and for small ones or for organizing a compact recreation area, it is better to choose slow-growing and dwarf plants.

For instance:

  • Mountain pine. A very unpretentious undersized tree that can live on the most scanty soils.
  • Dwarf cedar... The same applies to pines, but it grows not so much in height as in breadth, creeping along the ground, therefore it requires a fairly large area. It tolerates severe winters well.

  • Yew. Excellent choice for small areas - grows very slowly, thrives in shade. But it is thermophilic and can die due to the high standing of groundwater, since it does not tolerate constant high soil moisture.
  • Tsuga - original coniferous plant with an unusual crown shape in the form of umbrellas. It can be kept neat by periodically doing a haircut with your own hands. Grows best in areas protected from the wind.

How to choose perennials

All herbaceous plants very demanding on the composition of the soil, illumination, and other growing conditions.

When choosing decorative flowers for the garden, first of all, pay attention to this.

  • Sun-loving plants should be planted in open areas, most of the day illuminated by sunlight.
  • For shade-tolerant flowers, areas on the western or eastern side of buildings are suitable, as well as flower beds located near tall trees that do not cast a thick shadow.
  • Shade-loving plants, on the contrary, feel better where the sun rarely looks: under the crown of bushes and trees, in the shade of the north side of the house.

Another selection criterion is the height of the plants. For example, tall ones are used for the back or central part of flower beds and beds, for decorating unsightly fences and outbuildings. And creeping (ground cover) - to create tree trunks, create alpine slides and other compositions with stones.

Especially carefully choose decorative cereals for the garden - not all of them are able to live in a harsh climate, and require complex care. Such herbs include brown and beige sedge, cortaderia, impera.

But the droplet, soddy pike, feather grass or sesleria are quite unpretentious, and at the same time they can become a decoration of your garden.

Council. If you plan to grow flowers and herbs from seeds, choose seeds in plain bags - local breeders' products adapted to your climatic conditions.
The price of a beautiful package with bright colors on it is usually much higher, but the result rarely matches the picture.
