Device

How this or that model works depends on its type. Below are the names of the main elements with description:

• Brackets or hangers to secure the base... The set usually comes with 2 or more pieces, depending on the length of the curtain rod. Two brackets (hangers) are installed on the sides, and at least one supporting one is installed in the middle.
• Base for hanging curtains... With regard to the type of cornice, it can be a rod, string or profile;
• Flairons (if provided). Basically, curly lugs are installed at the ends of round bar curtain rods.

In some cases, the structure will consist of only one solid part, for example, a tire when attaching a tire cornice to the ceiling.

Views

All models can be divided into two large groups according to the mounting device: ceiling and wall:

1. Ceiling options mount directly to the ceiling. Ceiling structures are able to visually increase the height of the room, make it more majestic. In combination with the large width of the cornice - from wall to wall - they create a truly solemn atmosphere in the room. Ceiling cornices are also installed in cases where it is not possible to fix wall-mounted ones (for example, if the wall material is drywall or the distance between the ceiling and the window opening is too small). Ceiling options are inferior to wall ones in the ability to withstand a large weight of curtains, as well as in the choice of options for mounting curtains (ceiling models, as a rule, are installed only of two types - bus and profile).
2. Wall mounted options offer ample room for imagination... Such cornices have been popular for several years and do not plan to surrender their positions. Most often, the installation of wall cornices is chosen in the presence of stretch or suspended ceilings. Depending on the curtain model, only ceiling or only wall curtain rods are suitable for fastening it. So, Roman shades can only be hung on wall options in order to achieve their snug fit to the window. Depending on the configuration, both ceiling and wall cornices can be presented in the following variations.

Round

Round cornices are the most traditional and familiar type. Currently, there is not only a single-row, but also a two-row round version with rods of different diameters, located parallel to each other. Round bars are supplemented with special tips - finials - on each side. At first, they did not carry any decorative functions, but after some time, designers began to make them curly: in the form of flowers, petals, animal heads, and not so long ago, finches decorated with rhinestones and enamel appeared.

The choice of a round cornice imposes certain obligations: the fastening elements of the curtains, as well as the various decor of the curtains, must be performed in the same design with the tips and the rod itself. For example, when ordering curtains with eyelets, not only the eyelets themselves, but also the curtain hooks must be made in the same color scheme with the cornice and using the same materials. Strings

String designs look very modern and minimalistic. They do not take up much space and are almost invisible, but their presence adds the necessary shocking to the room. The same cannot be said about the fixing devices, they usually loosen under heavy curtains, which leads to the "sagging" of the entire structure. Most often, string cornices are used in interiors of modern styles: Hi-tech, Minimalism, Modern. In traditional interiors, they will look more than out of place.

Tire

The busbar is a structure equipped with a special groove into which fastening mechanisms are installed so that the curtain slides between two parts of the cornice. This was often installed earlier in the USSR, so most people, by inertia, choose it. The number of rows is usually limited to two, but variations are possible. This is due to the fact that it is not customary to equip tire cornices with additional pompous details such as lambrequins or bandos: the insufficiently majestic design of the cornice itself does not allow this from a stylistic point of view. But the use of light curtains in combination with a thick sliding curtain is not prohibited.

A big plus is that on the tire cornice the curtain is attached close to the ceiling, and there is practically no gap left. Therefore, it is the tire ones that are chosen as ceiling mounts: so the ceiling of the room seems even higher.

Baguette

The baguette is complemented by a carved strip. The plank not only covers the entire "filling", which is responsible for the ability to move the curtains, but also acts as a decorative element. The relatively low price of a baguette cornice allows you to choose different types of coatings: from plastic trim wood grain and finishing with natural leather. Often there is a place under the bar for lighting, which gives the curtains a special charm.

Properly chosen lighting further enhances their beauty. As a rule, a conventional bus structure is hidden under the bar, so that the baguette version is a combined type.

Profile

A profile cornice is in many ways similar to a tire cornice, except that the rows of a tire cornice are divided among themselves and represent, as it were, separate slats, while the profile is a single flat piece. Profile models are made of flexible materials, so that they can be installed even along the contour of a figured window. A huge advantage of profile options is just their flexibility. For example, by installing this option on the ceiling, you can round off its edges, "hiding" the unattractive sidewalls.

Profile cornices serve as a good alternative to wall-mounted baguette ones, since they can also be equipped with a hood - a strip with various patterns that covers the curtain fasteners. The hood is not a very wide element, but the possibilities of decorating it are quite large: from embossed patterns with gilding to fabric coverings. The three-row profile version is usually supplied complete with a stretch ceiling. It allows you to hang curtains, curtains and a soft lambrequin at the same time.

Telescopic

As the name suggests, telescopic models can be folded in and out. Unlike conventional tubular curtain rods, they do not need to be filed to fit the desired size: just fold them a little. This function allows you to use telescopic cornices not just once, but in different rooms after various repairs.

Mini-cornices "cafe"

The stained glass mini-cornice is attached directly to the frame. These models have a relatively small diameter and are usually supplied in pairs. Spacers

Spacer models are somewhat similar to telescopic models, with the exception of a few significant differences. The spacer cornice is a stick with a spring inside. The spring pushes the ends outward. Thus, the installed cornice "rests" on the walls, without the need for additional support in the form of brackets. When choosing this type, you need to be careful, since if the wall material is not strong enough, it can severely damage them. For example, drywall walls will not withstand pressure. It is also not recommended to hang heavy curtains on the spacer cornice. Despite the fact that the design is quite reliable, it cannot cope with heavy weight.

For roman blinds

Such designs are installed directly on the window sash, allowing the curtain to be lifted vertically, like a blind. The size window frame must ideally match the size of the curtain rod, otherwise installation will become impossible.

Which is better?

Depending on the functional purpose of the room and whether it is residential or non-residential, its general style depends on which option should be preferred. For non-residential premises, it is better to prefer simple, reliable structures. For example, when choosing a suitable option for a balcony, decide what effect you want to achieve. To create a cozy home environment, you should give preference to round cornices.In a room that serves as a living room or bedroom, you can choose any option, it all depends on your preferences and the style of the room. In particular, modern styles are "friendly" with string or profile designs, and for the more traditional baguette or tubular models are suitable.

Attic rooms are of particular interest. For the roof window located on the ceiling, you can choose both mini-eaves "cafe" and for roller blinds. It all depends on how much you want to darken the room. Ordinary curtains will not fit as close to the glass as rolled curtains, therefore more light will penetrate the room. There are no good or bad curtain rods, each of them has its own merits. There are suitable and unsuitable designs. Components

Eaves are usually complemented by a variety of fittings. Mounts are of two types: bracket and hanger... Their division is extremely conditional and depends on what exactly the structure is attached to - to the ceiling or to the wall. So, suspensions are used for ceiling structures, and brackets for wall structures. The brackets are open and closed. The open holder allows you to simply put the bar on top of the mounts and just as easily remove it. This type is generally not useful for ceiling mounts.

A closed fixture means that the rod will be threaded through it, then attached to the wall or ceiling and left right there. There is no talk of any disconnection.Therefore, when choosing curtain fasteners, this fact must be taken into account. There are all kinds of curtain attachments: eyelets, hinges, ties, hooks, rings, magnets, and so on. The choice of each is determined by the type of cornice, as well as whether the closed or open type of fastening is used. For example, the curtain on the eyelets cannot be placed on a closed type cornice, since it will not be possible to remove it for washing in the future without disassembling the cornice completely. Cornices are made of various materials, ranging from quite expensive to the most affordable:

Such models can even be hidden behind the ceiling, creating the illusion that the curtains are not attached to anything and just float by themselves. A similar solution is applicable for simple, modest interiors, but bright solutions can also be found.

• Recently, it is possible to glue plastic structures with a special material, imitating various coatings: wood, leather, even metal. It is not clear from a distance that this is a fake, but upon closer inspection it becomes obvious. Plastic and even more so metal-plastic curtain rods can withstand a fairly large weight, however, when ordering, it is worth clarifying this issue separately.

• Wooden curtain rods - timeless classics, allowing to give any room a regal look. There are both tubular and baguette cornices made of wood, and both types look great. You need to be careful when choosing a wooden baguette cornice. The design looks quite massive and is not suitable for window decoration in a small room with a low ceiling. Wooden models themselves are bright decoration rooms, so you need to plan their use even at the planning stage of the interior design in order to correctly fit them into the situation in the future. Wooden cornices are able to withstand quite a lot of weight (especially wall models). They go well with classic heavy curtains made of solid fabrics like brocade, jacquard, tapestry, but can also enhance the beauty of light curtains.

Metal curtain rods are the most expensive. They are distinguished by durability, an expensive look and a large selection of different options.

Metal structures are available in different coatings:

• White;
• The black;
• Gilded;
• Brass;
• Copper.

The texture can be matte or glossy: matte cornices are more suitable for modern interiors, and glossy ones for classic ones. However, there may be exceptions to this rule. Curly cornices are especially loved and popular. You can buy a ready-made forged cornice, or you can order an individual design. Individual models are more expensive for two reasons: they are made in an exclusive version and, as a rule, by hand. Iron curtain rods are heavy on their own, so they require high-quality, reliable wall mounting.

Dimensions

The length of the mini-cornices depends on the width of the window sash: the cornice should be slightly narrower than the sash.The same goes for swivel and Roman blinds. The diameter of the mini-cornices is approximately 1 centimeter. The diameter of the iron rods varies from 10 to 40 mm, depending on the purpose of the pipe. Single models are typically 25mm in diameter. In double-row, the bar for curtains is 28 mm, and for tulle - from 10 to 16 mm. Lengths usually range from 160 to 360 cm, but you can buy a one-piece rod 28-50 mm in diameter and 6 m in length.

The diameter of the wooden rod is 28 mm as standard. Models are produced with a diameter of 16, 28, 25 mm and a maximum length of 2 m.It is possible to make a barbell up to 50 mm in diameter to order, then its length can reach 4 m. Plastic tires reach 4 m in length and can be up to 8.7 cm in width depending on the number of rows. The decorative strip is 5 or 9 cm as standard, but models with hoods have wider strips up to 300 mm. The diameter of the standard plastic rod is the same as the wooden one - 28 mm. In the case of forged options, decor, on the contrary, is welcome. The most recent trend is the stylization of the cornice for a plant branch. It can be just a bare branch, or maybe with leaves. Curtain rod length

The total length of the curtain rod includes the length of the bar and the two decorative caps. But before you start measuring the length of the cornice, you need to determine where it will be and how it will be attached.

• When choosing a curtain rod for curtains that cover the entire wall with a window as a whole, the length of the curtain rod itself should be two to three centimeters less than the distance from the wall to the wall. At the same time, keep in mind that there should be at least three attachment points for such a long cornice!
• If the cornice is located exactly above the window, then the brackets on which it is attached must be behind the window opening, otherwise you will not be able to fully open the window, and the drawn curtains will cover part of the glazing. In this case, the length of the cornice should be thirty to forty centimeters longer than the width of the window opening.

Brackets

Please note that the brackets are of different lengths. If this length is greater than the distance from the window opening to the ceiling, the bracket above the window will not fit. Sometimes in such cases they are fixed below the level of the window opening, this placement is called "partially above the window". If the cornice is more than two meters long, then it must be fastened to three brackets, if less, two are enough.

The distance between the brackets should ideally not be less than one and a half and more than two meters. In this case, the cornice will hold tight, its rods will not deform, and the curtain will not sag.

Cornice dimensions

In order to choose the right curtain rod for curtains, its structure and position, the following measurements must be taken (in cm):

• The length of the wall with a window from one side wall to the other.
• The width of the window itself.
• The distance the curtains will be from the wall.
• Height from the window opening to the ceiling.

Types of fasteners

Each type of window curtain rod has its own attachments for hanging curtains. Let's consider the most common options.

Profile systems

The aluminum profile has guides, one or more, along which hooks slide - curtains cling to them.

Pros. Aluminum is strong enough, but at the same time plastic, it is possible to make rounded cornices from it for decorating niches, bay windows, lancet or other non-standard windows. In addition, it is the profile cornices that are usually supplied with automatic control systems for the position of the curtains, which is very convenient, especially if the room has high ceilings.

There are also profile systems made of plastic, which attract a low price. They are suitable only for light fabrics, as heavy curtains cause their deformation by their weight.

The hooks for profile systems are made of transparent plastic, so they are less visible. On top of the system for decorative purposes, planks "like a tree", "like a stone", "like a leather" are usually attached. Installation and assembly of such structures is simple and does not require much time.

If you need multi-row options for curtain rods, profile ones are the best choice. They can consist of curtains in two, three, or even four rows. For example, on the profile closest to the window, a transparent tulle is attached, the next one carries a dense curtain, and the extreme one - a lambrequin. Or you can fix transparent tulle on all rows different colors, which will make it possible to vary the mood of the luminous flux density and its shade.

Roller blinds, Japanese curtains, Roman curtains and blinds, which are popular today, belong precisely to the profile systems, and have a common basis, although there are structural differences between them.

Classic cornice

The most traditional type of window cornice is tubular structures. They can be made from wood or metal pipes. The larger the diameter of the cornice, the heavier curtains it can withstand.

Mounts for such curtains can be as follows:

• Magnetic clips that serve not only as fasteners, but also as decoration. They can be of various shapes and colors.
• Cloth loops.
• Eyelets (holes in the fabric, edged with metal or plastic).
• Rings made of wood or metal, to which the curtains are attached with hooks. Tulle and organza can tear against fasteners, but it will not hold dense fabrics, this option is suitable only for fabrics of medium density.

When choosing eyelets or rings as a fastener when choosing a curtain rod for curtains, check the diameter of the curtain rod - it must be less than the diameter of the fastening ring, otherwise the curtain will not slide along the guide.

Usually, classic cornices have one or two tubular structures - you can hang tulle and a blackout curtain on them. It is also possible to replace one of the structures with a string - the most suitable mount for tulle and cut. Classic curtain rods are suitable for any interior, it is only important to choose the right material from which they are made.

Forged cornices

If you want to choose a curtain rod that will decorate a room in the Baroque, Rococo, Empire, Country or Provence styles, stop your attention on forged products... Depending on which tips they end with and what fabrics are used for curtains, such curtain rods look completely different.

Graceful empire curls and velvet or satin curtains will create an atmosphere of luxury in the Baroque style, and plant elements of forging and “chintz” curtains in small flowers will transfer you into the sultry summer of Provence.

Forged cornice brackets are interior decorations in themselves. The ideal option is to order them individually in order to express your personal preferences as much as possible and create a unique look for your home. Forged cornices are used as guides metal pipes or twigs, and in this they are similar to the classical ones. There can also be several guides, usually no more than three.

String cornices

String cornices are used as guides a stretched metal wire - "string". Fasteners for curtains - the same as in the classic curtain rod, but smaller in size. Magnetic clips look best on this design. Plastic strings are also used - they are suitable for light curtains made of tulle or organza. Such a cornice is practically invisible and there is a feeling that the tulle is floating in the air without any support.

Of all the options for curtain rods, this option is the most "lightweight" - it will not hold heavy curtains. More than others, it is suitable for decorating rooms in high-tech, minimalism, modern, and combined styles. Such cornices, with the correct selection of accompanying elements, are most suitable for masking room imperfections.

Baguette cornices

Baguette cornices are similar in design to profile ones, but in them the fasteners are always covered with a decorative strip - a baguette. The baguette can be wide or narrow, of various shapes, sizes, colors.

Curtain profiles can have from one to three rows. In the first row, a Velcro strip is often placed to secure the lambrequin. When choosing a baguette cornice, be guided by the color and shape of the baguette itself - after all, it is the main decorative element, and should organically fit into your interior.
