The standard configuration is, in principle, suitable for the widest range of applications, but with decent power, it comes with a corresponding weight and price. When choosing a tool mainly for processing pipes and profiles, pay attention to the cutting parameters. For a steel pipe and a steel plate, they will differ (of course, for wood too). By the way, the smaller the stroke length and the cutting depth specified by the manufacturer, the more favorable the ratio of price and quality of the tool. Sometimes craftsmen try to "cheat" the situation by setting the blade to the desired length to the detriment of the cleanliness of the cut. But one way or another, you will have to fork out for equipment when working with different materials.
hybrid technology
Hybrid saws are able to solve a special range of tasks. Some, like a jigsaw, are “sharpened” to famously cut out intricate shapes, others are ideal for shaping the crowns of trees and bushes. Third, the most interesting - alligator-class models - have high performance. They are equipped with two saw blades that move in opposite directions. Such “gnaw through” (grind) both the trunk and the stone. However, such a saw set is wider than a conventional reciprocating saw, which limits the ability to use the tool in uncomfortable narrow places. And such a saw blade does not have a pointed end that can pass through a thick and strong wall.
We cut stones
To work with concrete and brick, a corded reciprocating saw with a power of more than 1 kW is required. A frisky, but heavy tool in weight will help speed up masonry work, and during reconstruction, it will immediately destroy extra walls or make new openings in them. For a powerful tool, it becomes important to have a soft start function, so that the reciprocating saw will not cause an overvoltage in the network when turned on.
Specialized hybrid alligator models are also good for working with stone. However, when choosing between a powerful conventional electric cutter and an "alligator", one must keep in mind that a hybrid tool, firstly, is not universal; secondly, it differs in the original cartridge, and the price of its equipment is twice as much as usual.
Adapt to the place
Due to trimming tasks, a convenient horizontal surface is not always expected. Working on weight, and even in cramped conditions, precise movement, helps a movable stop. (Its other names are the support shoe and platform overhang.) In most models, the device is movable, takes the desired slope, allowing it to rest in a comfortable and stable position for work. In addition, the support shoe simply slides forward to adjust (reduce) the length of the saw blade to the size of the workpiece, resulting in a clean cut. Fixing the stop in the desired position is carried out by pressing the button or turning it, tightening it using a key.
Adjust to the material
The engine speed adjustment function allows you to choose the optimal mode of working with the material. The simplest way stepless adjustment - the stronger the pressure on the start key, the higher the speed - favorably affects the price of the tool, but requires operator experience. It is more convenient for a beginner to increase speed and speed up the process, however, this manner of work provokes rapid wear.
Step adjustment allows you to set the required speed before starting work by moving the lever or wheel, taking into account the properties of the material. For wood, less revolutions are required, for metal, more. To simplify the choice, manufacturers often schematically indicate the materials themselves on the case, rather than numbers.
And finally, equipping the tool with electronic engine speed control or constant electronics allows you not to think about the effect of material resistance on the motor at all. The equipment itself adjusts to the load, which is especially important for working with heterogeneous materials, for example, when dismantling buildings.
Chuck
The saw blade is attached to the chuck by pressing a button or using a key. The button is undoubtedly more convenient, it simplifies the replacement of equipment. But here the type of cartridge matters more. The universal cartridge differs from the original in the breadth of opportunities for acquiring equipment from various manufacturers, and there are many of them on the market. Its official name is “universal 1/2″ locking mechanism”, which should be indicated on the package. Having a tool with a universal mount, the master chooses the equipment, only on the basis of the tasks ahead, without being interested in the shape of the shank, that is, the part responsible for mounting in the chuck. Incidentally, among original systems mounts are also found such that 8 fully justify their name. For example, the tool can be inserted into the chuck in different positions, that is, both up and down with teeth.

The choice of saw blade is determined by the hardness and structure of the material, as well as the quality requirements of the work. RECIPROCATING SAWS ARE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE POPULAR CLASS OF ELECTRIC SAWS WHICH USES A REVERSIBLE (PENDULUM) SAWING MECHANISM. SUCH MECHANISM ALLOWS TO PERFORM ACCURATE SAWING ON A COMPLEX TRAJECTORY.
Reciprocating saws have been known for many decades. In general, this class of tools is very extensive and, in addition to reciprocating saws, also includes various alligator saws, electric jigsaws and other saws, which we will not touch on in this article. Note that there are other names of reciprocating saws: electric saws, hacksaws, etc.
Abroad, reciprocating saws are used very widely, but in our country they have long remained a relatively uncommon type of tool. They were more or less in demand only among professional builders, and in everyday life people in the old fashioned way managed either with a hand tool or a universal mechanized one (for example, a “grinder”). IN last years, however, the situation is changing, interest in reciprocating saws is growing among non-professionals. Fortunately, there are many models of such a tool for domestic use, relatively affordable (3-4 thousand rubles).
The main advantage of reciprocating saws is the ability to perform cuts in cramped conditions, in particular, when dismantling wooden or reinforced concrete structures or water pipes. Reciprocating saw requires very small space; this is perhaps the only type of power saw that can cut the protruding parts of the workpiece flush with the wall.
LONG ENOUGH
In addition to demolition work, reciprocating saws in combination with appropriate blades are widely used for cutting blocks of gas and foam concrete, porous ceramics, etc.
In terms of performance, reciprocating saws are inferior to circular or chain saws and have some limitations in use. With their help, for example, blind cuts cannot be made. But reciprocating saws also have their advantages. They can perform accurate and precise cuts (much more accurately than chain saws) to a greater depth than standard circular saws allow. Depending on the model, the maximum depth of saw cut in wood for reciprocating saws can be 350 mm, here they can compete, perhaps only chain saws. And, of course, with the help of reciprocating saws, as well as with the help of jigsaws, you can make complex curvilinear cuts - here no other tool can keep up with them. The reciprocating motion of the canvas requires a certain accuracy from the master.
In no case should the saw blade rest against the work surface (for example, if the material is too thick) or against some other obstacles. Retribution in the form of a broken blade usually comes quickly. Perhaps that is why power tool manufacturers are in no hurry to start producing reciprocating saws for domestic use. In everyday life, by the way, reciprocating saws are most often used for gardening. Lighter and more compact models are in demand there, which are convenient to hold on weight with one hand.
FIVE IMPORTANT CHARACTERISTICS OF THE RECIPE SAW
The most important technical characteristics of reciprocating saws include the following.
Maximum cutting depth.
This value is indicated for different materials(usually for wood and metal). It corresponds to the length of the saw blade. Compact saws can be equipped with blades of small length (150 mm), and more powerful and heavy tools with files, as a rule, up to 250 mm long, but there are files up to 450 mm long. Stroke frequency (stroke/min). At various models the maximum stroke rate is 2500-3000 strokes/min. The maximum stroke rate determines the performance of the tool.
Stroke size (mm).
The amplitude of the saw blade stroke is different models from 20 to 30 mm. This parameter, together with the frequency, determines the linear speed of the cutting blade relative to the material being processed. So, if the blade stroke is 30 mm, and the maximum frequency is 3000 strokes / min, then maximum speed blade movement will be 90 m/min.
Power.
Classic mains powered reciprocating saws usually have a power of around 1 kW. You can find models with a power of 700-300 W, and more powerful ones (up to 1.5 kW). For intensive activity, of course, it is desirable to choose a more powerful tool, but it will differ. big size and weight.
Tool weight.
The lightest models of reciprocating saws will weigh 1.2-1.3 kg, and the heaviest - up to 3.5-4 kg. Of course, it is always tempting to choose a powerful and high-performance tool, but do not forget that a significant part of the time when working with it you will have to keep it on the weight!
ADDITIONAL OPTIONS
Pendulum move. When the pendulum stroke is turned on, the saw blade oscillates not only up and down, but also along the cut axis. This option is not available on all reciprocating saw models. It allows you to significantly increase productivity, but the quality of the cut deteriorates. In addition, the pendulum stroke cannot be used for precise curved cuts. Overload protection. Automation that prevents the reciprocating saw from breaking when overheated. This option is equally useful for professionals (when the load on the tool is large) and in everyday life (an inexperienced user can accidentally overload the tool).
Vibration damping.
In most tools, the main vibration dampeners are soft grips on the saw handles. For long-term, professional use, this is clearly not enough, therefore, in professional models, there are vibration damping systems using counterweights.
Network cable.
The nature of dismantling involves a lot of movement around the facility, so the longer the power cable (4-5 m or more), the better. Even more convenient is the cordless tool, which is now actively replacing networked models.
CHOOSE THE SPEED!
When working, it must be remembered that for each type of material there is its own optimal web speed. For plastics and laminates, a speed of 40-50 m/min is recommended. For soft and hard rocks
Saw blades for wood - from 50 to 90 m/min. And for metals, in general, there is a large spread in speeds, depending on the type of metal or grade (steel). For example, ordinary steel can be cut at 50-90 m/min, aluminum at 80-110 m/min, and cast iron at only 30-50 m/min. In general, it is better not to try to set the maximum frequency of the blade stroke, since this significantly increases the risk of overheating and damage to the file.
Reciprocating saws may have the option of limiting the maximum stroke frequency. To do this, the tool has a corresponding regulator, for example, in the form of a rotary wheel with a digital scale from one (minimum speed, several hundred strokes per minute) to six (maximum speed).
FILS
The blade for work is selected according to the type of material being processed, as well as the pitch of the teeth and the type of shank. Depending on the material being processed, there are several types of canvases:
- dismantling (for woodworking with nails);
- for wood and plastic;
- for metal;
- for cast iron, abrasive metals, fiberglass;
- universal;
- various types of special blades for working on cardboard, frozen materials, drywall, etc.
Special blade models can also be noted, such as for cutting pipes or flexible blades for flush cutting. There are also attachments for reciprocating saws, which can hardly be called blades. For example, the Milwaukee HACKZALL and SAWZALL Specially Shaped Reciprocating Saw Blade Set includes 38mm and 75mm scrapers for removing very sticky silicone, putty, paint and rust, and a blade for removing damaged or damaged grout between tiles.
Tooth pitch (usually stated as teeth per millimeter or per inch, such as tooth per inch, TPI) is important when cutting thin sheets. For high-quality cutting, it is necessary that at least three teeth are immersed in the material being processed. For thin (up to 10 mm) metal plates or bars, it is recommended to use blades with a tooth pitch of 14 TPI, for metal blanks with a thickness of 10-20 mm, blades of 10 TPI are suitable, etc. Variable pitch blades (e.g. 10/14 TPI) can also be used and are recommended when cutting hollow metal parts (e.g. water pipes). The material from which the canvas is made is indicated on the packaging of the file. Sometimes this is just an indication of the type of material (for example, Bimetall - bimetal), sometimes a more detailed decoding is given (for example, Bimetall with a cobalt content of 8%). Detailed decoding allows you to more accurately match the canvas to the metal being processed. So, a bimetal with a cobalt content of 8% is well suited for processing steel with a hardness of up to 45 HRC and soft non-ferrous metals and alloys. A bimetal blade with a cobalt content of 11% is used for cutting hard steel, stainless steel, titanium alloys.
The second handle is made in the form of a gun forearm near the thrust platform.
Such, for example, is the design of saws Bosch PSA 700 E, Makita JR3050T, INTERSKOL NP-120/1010E, Hilti WSR 900-PE, Milwaukee SSD 1100 X SAWZALL. There are, however, other layout options. For example, for Bosch PFZ 500 E, Black & Decker RS890K electric saws, the handles are located above the axis of the pendulum stroke. An even greater variety of forms is observed in small one-handed saws. In them, the handle can be located both perpendicularly and at a slight angle to the axis of the pendulum stroke; be moved to the rear of the body or located in its middle part. In general, there are many options, and therefore it makes sense to evaluate the convenience of the design on your own, and not from the picture. You need to take the saw in your hands, check its balance, evaluate whether the handles are comfortable enough, how good the plastic is from which the non-slip pads are made.

As for the shank, now almost all models of reciprocating saws use a universal 13 mm shank, which means that blades from any manufacturer will be interchangeable (in some compact models of reciprocating saws, jigsaw files can be used - with T-shank shank).
LOOKING AT THE CASE
The classic design of the body of a two-handed reciprocating saw resembles the design of a hammer drill. In it, the main handle is moved back and is located perpendicular to the axis of the pendulum stroke and below it.
Check the convenience of the saw blade fixing mechanism. It should not be too tight, so that you do not have to make great efforts to turn the locking piece. Evaluate how easy it is to insert and remove the file.
In this case, the mechanism should not be too weak, there should not be any backlash of the saw blade.
To work in cramped conditions, you need the most compact tool possible. An important characteristic for him is the length of the body. For the most compact models, it does not exceed 300 mm. For example, the Milwaukee HACKZALL C12 HZ-0 cordless reciprocating saw is only 280 mm long.
SUPPORT SHOE
The design of the support shoe can be sliding. By moving the stop along the saw blade, we adjust its reach. This allows you to use the resource of the saw blade more carefully, and it can be more convenient for work. It is good if the base plate can change the angle of inclination for cutting parts at an angle.
All sliding and pivoting parts of the shoe mechanism must be easily fixed in position with the clamping screws. Moreover, the fixation must be reliable, without play. Therefore, when choosing a reciprocating saw, pay attention to the reliability of the design of the support shoe.
BATTERY MODELS
Cordless reciprocating saws are produced, as a rule, in a lighter, “one-handed” version, although there are also classic, powerful models for intensive work, such as the Hilti WSR 22-A, Milwaukee HD28 SX-502C, Bosch GSA 36 V-LI, etc.
In such models, powerful batteries of 18-36 V are used, which allow you to work with the tool for several tens of minutes without recharging. However, professional cordless reciprocating saws are quite expensive. Less powerful "one-handed" cordless models are cheaper. Professional equipment (Makita, "blue" Bosch, Milwaukee, Metabo, Hilti) will cost about 7-15 thousand rubles, while household and semi-professional models can be bought for 4-7 thousand rubles.
When choosing a cordless tool, it is pointless to try to save on the battery. It should be, if possible,
more powerful. For continuous operation, you must have at least one battery in reserve, as well as a quick charger that can charge the battery in 1-3 hours.
For all-season work, you may need cold-resistant batteries. Such now exist - for example, some modifications of lithium-ion batteries easily tolerate frosts down to -20 ° C.
ALLIGATOR SAW
Separately, we will mention saws that use not one, but two saw blades moving along the saw bar in counter-movement to each other. Alligator saws are mainly used for cutting wood and building stone. Similar saws are available from DeWALT and Bosch. The main advantage of an alligator saw is the absence of a jerk when starting work. If the reciprocating saw must be applied to the workpiece so that the supporting sole necessarily rests on the workpiece, then the alligator saw can cut without jerking with any part of the blades. The disadvantage of alligator saws is their relative bulkiness (for example, the length of the DeWALT DWE399 model with the blade bed exceeds 90 cm, and the weight is 5.5 kg), so these saws are clearly not suitable for work in cramped conditions. In addition, alligator saws give a less accurate, wide (about 5 mm) slot and are not suitable for fine, “curly” work.
SIX ADVANTAGES OF RECIRCULAR SAWS
- Even, smooth cuts can be made in confined spaces.

- You can cut almost any material, from plastic and wood (with nails) to stone, brick and metal.
