Devices that do not require a permanent connection to the mains, but are powered by a battery, are more convenient in terms of mobility than network counterparts. But for the sake of autonomy, you have to sacrifice functionality, performance and often put up with a large weight of the tool. However, you can always choose the optimal combination of parameters. Especially if you choose products of famous brands. The popularity of the manufacturer does not necessarily mean high cost. Budget-class models can quite cope with the task, if they are chosen correctly.

Features of cordless saws

Cordless electric saws have the same features as their corded counterparts. The main advantage of such tools is the ability to work autonomously, without requiring a permanent connection to the source. electric current. In addition, a reciprocating saw with a battery is more convenient to work at height, as the cord does not interfere and does not distract attention.

The disadvantages include less power, and, accordingly, performance. It should be borne in mind that the battery makes the tool heavier, and if there are several of them, even more so. A fair amount of weight can limit movement (after all, the tool is manual) and lead to rapid fatigue.

Experienced specialists generally believe that it is wrong to apply the term power to electric cutters of this type. It is more correct to evaluate the efficiency in terms of battery performance. The duration of the tool depends on the capacity of the battery, which is measured in ampere-hours.

As a rule, new tools are powered by removable batteries. This significantly increases the service life of the electric saw, because the failure of a non-removable battery will lead to the need to replace the tool completely. In addition, removable batteries do not require interrupting work while recharging.

When choosing an electric saw with a battery, first of all, you need to decide how often the power tool will be used, what amount of work to be done with it. For small loads, a not very expensive reciprocating cordless saw will do. As a rule, complete with such options are sets of basic Supplies, but very rarely such tools are supplied with batteries. Usually batteries, as well as chargers, have to be purchased separately.

If you need to work in low light conditions, a battery-powered electric saw with LED backlight on the front.

Another important criterion is the type of engine. There are two options to choose from: brushed (collector) and brushless (brushless). The second option has the significant advantage of longer tool life.

Meaning of specifications

The average weight of battery operated electric cutters is between 1 and 3.5 kg. Typically, professional-grade models are heavier than compact household tools. In expensive quality units, durable materials are used, as well as various add-ons to expand functionality. All this, of course, increases the mass of the reciprocating saw.

Modern high-quality models from reliable manufacturers can last up to 5 hours on a single charge. But you should always remember that the battery can run out at the most inopportune moment. It's a good idea to take spare reciprocating saw batteries with you, especially if you have a lot of work ahead of you. For ease of use, some models of cordless electric saws are equipped with a charging indicator. It can be placed either on the battery itself or directly on the body of the tool.

The best batteries include lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries that do not have a “memory effect”. You can charge them in any state. In addition, these batteries have protection against overcharging and overheating. 10.8V Li-Ion batteries charge from minimum to maximum in approximately 3.5 hours. The operating time of the tool with such a battery will be about 2 hours. During this time, you can cut from 30 to 190 branches with a diameter of up to 60 mm. A budget reciprocating saw on a 3 Ah battery can work for about 1 hour. More accurate values are indicated in the operating instructions for each specific model.

The best reciprocating saw manufacturers

When choosing an electric saw, it is quite reasonable to give preference to manufacturers who have proven themselves on the positive side. A quality tool will last a long time and will not present unexpected unpleasant surprises.

First of all, you should consider cordless reciprocating saws from trusted companies with a long history and a good reputation.

The German company Bosch is well known to many. Almost everyone has used some kind of tool from this manufacturer. Bosch appliances are traditionally distinguished by their reliability and functionality, meet internal quality standards and are able to satisfy the needs of the most sophisticated consumers. In the model range of Bosch reciprocating saws, you can find both budget and quite expensive models.

The Japanese manufacturer Makita is deservedly considered a giant in the field of power tools. This is not to say that each reciprocating saw of this company is devoid of flaws. Owners of budget models often complain about the lack of power, and even the wrong details. But on the other hand, professional-class electric saws are considered one of the best, both in terms of ease of use, and in terms of performance and, of course, reliability.

The German quality of Metabo electric saws speaks for itself. There are practically no complaints about reciprocating saws from this manufacturer.

The products of one of the oldest German power tool manufacturers Aeg are rightfully included in the list of the best in quality. The disadvantages noted by the owners of the budget models of this manufacturer, as a rule, are the result of using the tool not in accordance with the loads recommended by the manufacturer.

The American company DeWalt, which specializes in the production of various power tools, is also widely known. The company is actively implementing innovative solutions in its products, which cannot but arouse interest.

The reciprocating saw is unique in its capabilities. The sharp teeth of the electric saw are subject to most construction and finishing materials metal, stone, plastic and wood. A narrow blade, pointed at the end, is able to pass through a blank wall: the cut length reaches 35 cm. But this is not the most interesting thing ...

Due to the design features, it can cut a pipe or other protrusion flush with the wall. Neither a jigsaw, nor a grinder, nor a “circular” can cope with such a task. A toothy predator will be able to carefully cut an opening of complex shape in the masonry of foam concrete blocks or even bricks. And the “saber” is also light, it is convenient to wield it at the top: for example, standing on a stepladder, trim the upper crowns or cut thick branches in the garden.

What's in the teeth of a reciprocating saw

Power is one of the main characteristics of a reciprocating saw. When choosing a tool, it is desirable to represent the range of upcoming tasks. So, for sawing firewood, caring for garden trees quite enough power of 400-500 watts. For sawing wood with nails, trimming structures made of metal, plastic, composites, you will need a stronger engine.

The most powerful models often belong to the “alligator” class: in them, the working body is two or even several saw blades moving in opposite directions, which significantly increases productivity. Of course, a powerful tool copes with the task faster. On the other hand, the greater the power, the greater the weight of the saw, the higher its cost.

Choosing a reciprocating saw by parameters

When choosing a reciprocating saw, you should pay attention to the parameters of the stroke (its frequency, length), the presence of a pendulum stroke, and the way the speed is adjusted. The cut parameters are also important: they usually indicate the depth of the cut in wood and steel, plus the diameter of the cut in the steel pipe.

The stroke length of the working canvas in different models is in the range of 19-32 mm. For wood processing, it must be greater than for metal.

The pendulum stroke (by the way, it is not available in all models, and there are solutions that allow you to turn it off) is needed mainly to increase the speed of sawing wood, with its help the saw makes quick and rough cuts. If necessary, this function allows you to make a reverse movement, for example, if you want to slightly change the cutting path, release working area from sawdust.

Speed control

Most models provide the ability to adjust the speed, that is, the selection of the optimal sawing mode for each specific material. Adjustment can be carried out in a stepless way - sensitive travel button. The harder the operator presses on it, the more powerful the cut is. Pushed harder - sawed faster. In this case, most often the tool runs at maximum speed, which quickly wears out the engine.

With step control, the engine speed is set before starting work, taking into account the properties of the material being processed. The setting of the parameter is made by turning the wheel or by the trigger. In some household models, division does not indicate the number of revolutions, but the materials with which you can work.

Constant electronics - best option adjustments. Depending on how the cut is going, the machine itself selects the desired rotation speed, which allows you to work effectively even with difficult-to-pass materials.

Reciprocating saw cutting depth

To adjust the depth of cut in the reciprocating saw, there is a movable stop: the so-called support shoe, or platform overhang. The main purpose is to limit the length of the saw blade to the size of the workpiece, which reduces tool wear and makes the cut more accurate. The stop moves along the saw blade and is fixed in the desired position. Adjustment is carried out either with a key or by pressing a button.

In advanced models, the thrust device can change its slope, rotate in different planes. In a word, it makes it possible to optimally prepare for work with a workpiece not only of a certain thickness, but also of almost any complex shape. By comfortably resting the tool body and using the found stable position, it is easier to make an accurate, even sawing.

Sometimes you need to cut too wide a workpiece. That is, a longer saw blade is required than is allowed by the manufacturer of this particular model. It is likely that you will be able to pick up the equipment and cut it, but you should keep in mind: the quality of the cut will deteriorate. Constant work with larger tooling can lead to rapid tool wear.

Saw blade features

The saw blade is a replaceable working unit and is mounted in a chuck. According to the method of fastening, the tool shanks (the non-working part, which is responsible for fixing in the chuck) are divided into original and universal. The latter are suitable for any brand with a universal type of attachment.

Each material, be it wood, wood with nails, metal, concrete or plastic, has its own canvases. The choice of headset also depends on the requirements for the quality of sawing.

If you plan to work with different materials, then the ability to change tooling without using a key will reduce preparation time. In such models, the saw blade is inserted into the chuck or removed by pressing a button on the body. On alligator saws, saw blades are changed as a whole set.

On a note

Figured cutting with a reciprocating saw should not be trusted (processing accuracy will turn out to be extremely low). Its main purpose is destruction; an electric saw will serve as an excellent assistant when you need to quickly remove the old fence, dismantle window frames, heating radiators, etc.

By the way, power for a household tool is not such an indicative characteristic. After all, for home master does not have special significance, he will saw off the pipe in 35 or 45 seconds.

If the plans include sawing thick wood, for example, a beam with a section of 100 x 100 mm, then the presence of the pendulum stroke function will increase productivity by about a third, and, accordingly, save your time with large amounts of work. With sawing boards, the tool will do just fine without this function.

Powerful or more powerful?

Like other power tools, reciprocating saw manufacturers offer models for different consumers. Often, home craftsmen prefer professional equipment, believing that it is more reliable. They are not always right. Household electric saws are lighter, more compact, cheaper, and in terms of capabilities they are not much different from professional ones. Sometimes they even compete in terms of power. The difference is that the engine of the "professionals" is designed for longer loads. When making a choice, evaluate in what mode and for what purposes you will use the tool. Here it must be borne in mind: the reciprocating saw is held on weight and guided by hands, so the smaller its weight, the more convenient it is to work.

For models with high power, it is important to have a soft start function - a dynamic increase in the load on the power grid at the time of switching on. Low vibration levels are important for long-term work.

Comfort above all

Choose an electric saw only for technical specifications and a picture on the Internet - it's the same as a car - by color. Before you buy a "saber", hold it in your hands.

Here, too, you need a test drive. Models are very different both functionally and ergonomically.

Pay attention to how many different configurations of designs and shapes of handles. The D-shaped handle is convenient when working in different planes, contributes to a secure hold.

There are models in which the equipment can be inserted with teeth both up and down, which in some cases can be very beneficial.

And, of course, there is a fundamental choice to be made: a network model versus a battery one. Rechargeable batteries are mobile, however, with a high intensity of work, frequent recharging is required.

Saw blade marking - alloys:

"Cutting" alloys and blades

HCS- high carbon steel. Saw blades from it are used for processing wood, wood-based panels, plastic

HSS- high speed steel. Goes to the production of a headset for the processing of mild steel and non-ferrous metals

BIM- bimetallic compound from HCS and HSS.

It is used in the manufacture of canvases for professional processing of wood and metals, it is characterized by increased wear resistance

NM- vanadium carbide alloy. Handles the task of processing fiberglass, ceramic tiles, aerated concrete

CV- chrome-vanadium steel. CV file on the teeth wood and plastic (from HCS it is more wear resistant)

Reciprocating Saw Applications

Tell me, what is there in the arsenal of our home craftsmen in addition to the usual mechanical hacksaw? Most often a jigsaw or "grinder". Try, using only one of these tools, flush cutting the protruding rebar and make a large, neat hole in the wall. Will it work? As they say, if you suffer for a long time ... But a reciprocating saw will do both at once!

The sharp, powerful saw blade of a reciprocating saw crushes concrete, iron, not to mention wood. The range of tools with a longitudinal arrangement of the engine and saw blade is wide. There is household and professional tool, mains and battery, and even hybrid. Application features are primarily related to the hardness of the material being processed, the requirements for the quality and shape of the cut.

Sawing a tree with a saber saw

For work mainly on wood, you can choose a reciprocating saw of low power, but with a saw blade tolerance of about 30-40 cm, in a word, with a long tool. The pendulum stroke function will also be useful, which allows you to speed up the cutting of wood. However, when this option is enabled, the saw cut is rough.

In fact, there are plenty of power tools to work with relatively soft wood. A chainsaw is indispensable for felling trees and harvesting firewood. The circular saw cuts lumber along and across. No Precision miter saw it is difficult to achieve accuracy when installing skirting boards, cornices, etc. But the reciprocating one is unique in that it can do all this together, albeit a little! The timber will be cut, brushwood and a young log will be used for firewood, the same baseboards will help to adjust ... It will cope, perhaps not on the scale of a professional finisher. And he will also remove the old fence, sawing the boards along with the nails. In "omnivorous" she has no equal.

Universal undercutter

The average power (about 1 thousand W) segment is intended mainly for cutting metal, plastics, composites.

Expert advice

When choosing a reciprocating saw for woodworking with a pendulum function, give preference to models with the ability to turn it off. This will allow you to work in two modes, rough and clean cut. In the case of a multi-purpose application, it makes sense to buy a tool with average values of the main characteristics.

The standard configuration is, in principle, suitable for the widest range of applications, but with decent power, it comes with a corresponding weight and price. When choosing a tool mainly for processing pipes and profiles, pay attention to the cutting parameters. For a steel pipe and a steel plate, they will differ (of course, for wood too). By the way, the smaller the stroke length and the cutting depth specified by the manufacturer, the more favorable the ratio of price and quality of the tool. Sometimes craftsmen try to "cheat" the situation by setting the blade to the desired length to the detriment of the cleanliness of the cut. But one way or another, you will have to fork out for equipment when working with different materials.

hybrid technology

Hybrid saws are able to solve a special range of tasks. Some, like a jigsaw, are “sharpened” to famously cut out intricate shapes, others are ideal for shaping the crowns of trees and bushes. Third, the most interesting - alligator-class models - have high performance. They are equipped with two saw blades that move in opposite directions. Such “gnaw through” (grind) both the trunk and the stone. However, such a saw set is wider than a conventional reciprocating saw, which limits the ability to use the tool in uncomfortable narrow places. And such a saw blade does not have a pointed end that can pass through a thick and strong wall.

We cut stones

To work with concrete and brick, a corded reciprocating saw with a power of more than 1 kW is required. A frisky, but heavy tool in weight will help speed up masonry work, and during reconstruction, it will immediately destroy extra walls or make new openings in them. For a powerful tool, it becomes important to have a soft start function, so that the reciprocating saw will not cause an overvoltage in the network when turned on.

Specialized hybrid alligator models are also good for working with stone. However, when choosing between a powerful conventional electric cutter and an "alligator", one must keep in mind that a hybrid tool, firstly, is not universal; secondly, it differs in the original cartridge, and the price of its equipment is twice as much as usual.

Adapt to the place

Due to trimming tasks, a convenient horizontal surface is not always expected. Working on weight, and even in cramped conditions, precise movement, helps a movable stop. (Its other names are the support shoe and platform overhang.) In most models, the device is movable, takes the desired slope, allowing it to rest in a comfortable and stable position for work. In addition, the support shoe simply slides forward to adjust (reduce) the length of the saw blade to the size of the workpiece, resulting in a clean cut. Fixing the stop in the desired position is carried out by pressing the button or turning it, tightening it using a key.

Adjust to the material

The engine speed adjustment function allows you to choose the optimal mode of working with the material. The simplest way stepless adjustment - the stronger the pressure on the start key, the higher the speed - favorably affects the price of the tool, but requires operator experience. It is more convenient for a beginner to increase speed and speed up the process, however, this manner of work provokes rapid wear.

Step adjustment allows you to set the required speed before starting work by moving the lever or wheel, taking into account the properties of the material. For wood, less revolutions are required, for metal, more. To simplify the choice, manufacturers often schematically indicate the materials themselves on the case, rather than numbers.

And finally, equipping the tool with electronic engine speed control or constant electronics allows you not to think about the effect of material resistance on the motor at all. The equipment itself adjusts to the load, which is especially important for working with heterogeneous materials, for example, when dismantling buildings.

Chuck

The saw blade is attached to the chuck by pressing a button or using a key. The button is undoubtedly more convenient, it simplifies the replacement of equipment. But here the type of cartridge matters more. The universal cartridge differs from the original in the breadth of opportunities for acquiring equipment from various manufacturers, and there are many of them on the market. Its official name is “universal 1/2″ locking mechanism”, which should be indicated on the package. Having a tool with a universal mount, the master chooses the equipment, only on the basis of the tasks ahead, without being interested in the shape of the shank, that is, the part responsible for mounting in the chuck. Incidentally, among original systems mounts are also found such that 8 fully justify their name. For example, the tool can be inserted into the chuck in different positions, that is, both up and down with teeth.

The choice of canvases

The choice of saw blade is determined by the hardness and structure of the material, as well as the quality requirements of the work. When a smooth cut surface is important, whether it be wood, plastic pipe, metal channel or foam block, it is recommended to work only with equipment designed for a particular material. To simplify the task, manufacturers mark the equipment for its intended purpose and indicate the grade of the cutting alloy, by which the specialist can also navigate. In addition, the required saw blade can be selected according to the article, using the tooling catalogs of leading manufacturers.

Marking of cutting alloys and specialized equipment

HCS- high carbon steel, ideal for cutting wood, plastic, laminate and fibreboard

HAS- high quality cutting steel, suitable for working non-ferrous metals, light types of stones and wood with nails

HSS- high speed steel for mild steel and non-ferrous metals

BiM- bimetal joint made of HCS and HSS, used for processing wood, metal plates, pipes, profiles and corrugated materials, characterized by increased wear resistance and flexibility of the saw blade

CV- chrome vanadium steel with high wear resistance, used for wood and plastic work

HM/CT- vanadium carbide alloy, characterized by an extended service life, designed for processing fiberglass, ceramic tiles, aerated concrete and other building materials

All purpose- involves the use of equipment for any purpose, when the quality of the cut does not matter much

flexible- flexible canvas for work in limited access

Progressor- progressive saw blade for splinter-free sawing

According to the principle of the pendulum

RECIPROCATING SAWS ARE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE POPULAR CLASS OF ELECTRIC SAWS WHICH USES A REVERSIBLE (PENDULUM) SAWING MECHANISM. SUCH MECHANISM ALLOWS TO PERFORM ACCURATE SAWING ON A COMPLEX TRAJECTORY.

Reciprocating saws have been known for many decades. In general, this class of tools is very extensive and, in addition to reciprocating saws, also includes various alligator saws, electric jigsaws and other saws, which we will not touch on in this article. Note that there are other names of reciprocating saws: electric saws, hacksaws, etc.

Abroad, reciprocating saws are used very widely, but in our country they have long remained a relatively uncommon type of tool. They were more or less in demand only among professional builders, and in everyday life people in the old fashioned way managed either with a hand tool or a universal mechanized one (for example, a “grinder”). IN last years, however, the situation is changing, interest in reciprocating saws is growing among non-professionals. Fortunately, there are many models of such a tool for domestic use, relatively affordable (3-4 thousand rubles).

The main advantage of reciprocating saws is the ability to perform cuts in cramped conditions, in particular, when dismantling wooden or reinforced concrete structures or water pipes. Reciprocating saw requires very small space; this is perhaps the only type of power saw that can cut the protruding parts of the workpiece flush with the wall.

LONG ENOUGH

In addition to demolition work, reciprocating saws in combination with appropriate blades are widely used for cutting blocks of gas and foam concrete, porous ceramics, etc.

In terms of performance, reciprocating saws are inferior to circular or chain saws and have some limitations in use. With their help, for example, blind cuts cannot be made. But reciprocating saws also have their advantages. They can perform accurate and precise cuts (much more accurately than chain saws) to a greater depth than standard circular saws allow. Depending on the model, the maximum depth of saw cut in wood for reciprocating saws can be 350 mm, here they can compete, perhaps only chain saws. And, of course, with the help of reciprocating saws, as well as with the help of jigsaws, you can make complex curvilinear cuts - here no other tool can keep up with them. The reciprocating motion of the canvas requires a certain accuracy from the master.

In no case should the saw blade rest against the work surface (for example, if the material is too thick) or against some other obstacles. Retribution in the form of a broken blade usually comes quickly. Perhaps that is why power tool manufacturers are in no hurry to start producing reciprocating saws for domestic use. In everyday life, by the way, reciprocating saws are most often used for gardening. Lighter and more compact models are in demand there, which are convenient to hold on weight with one hand.

FIVE IMPORTANT CHARACTERISTICS OF THE RECIPE SAW

The most important technical characteristics of reciprocating saws include the following.

Maximum cutting depth.

This value is indicated for different materials(usually for wood and metal). It corresponds to the length of the saw blade. Compact saws can be equipped with blades of small length (150 mm), and more powerful and heavy tools with files, as a rule, up to 250 mm long, but there are files up to 450 mm long. Stroke frequency (stroke/min). At various models the maximum stroke rate is 2500-3000 strokes/min. The maximum stroke rate determines the performance of the tool.

Stroke size (mm).

The amplitude of the saw blade stroke is different models from 20 to 30 mm. This parameter, together with the frequency, determines the linear speed of the cutting blade relative to the material being processed. So, if the blade stroke is 30 mm, and the maximum frequency is 3000 strokes / min, then maximum speed blade movement will be 90 m/min.

Power.

Classic mains powered reciprocating saws usually have a power of around 1 kW. You can find models with a power of 700-300 W, and more powerful ones (up to 1.5 kW). For intensive activity, of course, it is desirable to choose a more powerful tool, but it will differ. big size and weight.

Tool weight.

The lightest models of reciprocating saws will weigh 1.2-1.3 kg, and the heaviest - up to 3.5-4 kg. Of course, it is always tempting to choose a powerful and high-performance tool, but do not forget that a significant part of the time when working with it you will have to keep it on the weight!

ADDITIONAL OPTIONS

Pendulum move. When the pendulum stroke is turned on, the saw blade oscillates not only up and down, but also along the cut axis. This option is not available on all reciprocating saw models. It allows you to significantly increase productivity, but the quality of the cut deteriorates. In addition, the pendulum stroke cannot be used for precise curved cuts. Overload protection. Automation that prevents the reciprocating saw from breaking when overheated. This option is equally useful for professionals (when the load on the tool is large) and in everyday life (an inexperienced user can accidentally overload the tool).

Vibration damping.

In most tools, the main vibration dampeners are soft grips on the saw handles. For long-term, professional use, this is clearly not enough, therefore, in professional models, there are vibration damping systems using counterweights.

Network cable.

The nature of dismantling involves a lot of movement around the facility, so the longer the power cable (4-5 m or more), the better. Even more convenient is the cordless tool, which is now actively replacing networked models.

CHOOSE THE SPEED!

When working, it must be remembered that for each type of material there is its own optimal web speed. For plastics and laminates, a speed of 40-50 m/min is recommended. For soft and hard rocks

Saw blades for wood - from 50 to 90 m/min. And for metals, in general, there is a large spread in speeds, depending on the type of metal or grade (steel). For example, ordinary steel can be cut at 50-90 m/min, aluminum at 80-110 m/min, and cast iron at only 30-50 m/min. In general, it is better not to try to set the maximum frequency of the blade stroke, since this significantly increases the risk of overheating and damage to the file.

Reciprocating saws may have the option of limiting the maximum stroke frequency. To do this, the tool has a corresponding regulator, for example, in the form of a rotary wheel with a digital scale from one (minimum speed, several hundred strokes per minute) to six (maximum speed).

FILS

The blade for work is selected according to the type of material being processed, as well as the pitch of the teeth and the type of shank. Depending on the material being processed, there are several types of canvases:

  • dismantling (for woodworking with nails);
  • for wood and plastic;
  • for metal;
  • for cast iron, abrasive metals, fiberglass;
  • universal;
  • various types of special blades for working on cardboard, frozen materials, drywall, etc.

Special blade models can also be noted, such as for cutting pipes or flexible blades for flush cutting. There are also attachments for reciprocating saws, which can hardly be called blades. For example, the Milwaukee HACKZALL and SAWZALL Specially Shaped Reciprocating Saw Blade Set includes 38mm and 75mm scrapers for removing very sticky silicone, putty, paint and rust, and a blade for removing damaged or damaged grout between tiles.

Tooth pitch (usually stated as teeth per millimeter or per inch, such as tooth per inch, TPI) is important when cutting thin sheets. For high-quality cutting, it is necessary that at least three teeth are immersed in the material being processed. For thin (up to 10 mm) metal plates or bars, it is recommended to use blades with a tooth pitch of 14 TPI, for metal blanks with a thickness of 10-20 mm, blades of 10 TPI are suitable, etc. Variable pitch blades (e.g. 10/14 TPI) can also be used and are recommended when cutting hollow metal parts (e.g. water pipes). The material from which the canvas is made is indicated on the packaging of the file. Sometimes this is just an indication of the type of material (for example, Bimetall - bimetal), sometimes a more detailed decoding is given (for example, Bimetall with a cobalt content of 8%). Detailed decoding allows you to more accurately match the canvas to the metal being processed. So, a bimetal with a cobalt content of 8% is well suited for processing steel with a hardness of up to 45 HRC and soft non-ferrous metals and alloys. A bimetal blade with a cobalt content of 11% is used for cutting hard steel, stainless steel, titanium alloys.

The second handle is made in the form of a gun forearm near the thrust platform.

Such, for example, is the design of saws Bosch PSA 700 E, Makita JR3050T, INTERSKOL NP-120/1010E, Hilti WSR 900-PE, Milwaukee SSD 1100 X SAWZALL. There are, however, other layout options. For example, for Bosch PFZ 500 E, Black & Decker RS890K electric saws, the handles are located above the axis of the pendulum stroke. An even greater variety of forms is observed in small one-handed saws. In them, the handle can be located both perpendicularly and at a slight angle to the axis of the pendulum stroke; be moved to the rear of the body or located in its middle part. In general, there are many options, and therefore it makes sense to evaluate the convenience of the design on your own, and not from the picture. You need to take the saw in your hands, check its balance, evaluate whether the handles are comfortable enough, how good the plastic is from which the non-slip pads are made.

Ergonomic body design ensures a secure grip even when wearing gloves

As for the shank, now almost all models of reciprocating saws use a universal 13 mm shank, which means that blades from any manufacturer will be interchangeable (in some compact models of reciprocating saws, jigsaw files can be used - with T-shank shank).

LOOKING AT THE CASE

The classic design of the body of a two-handed reciprocating saw resembles the design of a hammer drill. In it, the main handle is moved back and is located perpendicular to the axis of the pendulum stroke and below it.

Check the convenience of the saw blade fixing mechanism. It should not be too tight, so that you do not have to make great efforts to turn the locking piece. Evaluate how easy it is to insert and remove the file.

In this case, the mechanism should not be too weak, there should not be any backlash of the saw blade.

To work in cramped conditions, you need the most compact tool possible. An important characteristic for him is the length of the body. For the most compact models, it does not exceed 300 mm. For example, the Milwaukee HACKZALL C12 HZ-0 cordless reciprocating saw is only 280 mm long.

SUPPORT SHOE

The design of the support shoe can be sliding. By moving the stop along the saw blade, we adjust its reach. This allows you to use the resource of the saw blade more carefully, and it can be more convenient for work. It is good if the base plate can change the angle of inclination for cutting parts at an angle.

All sliding and pivoting parts of the shoe mechanism must be easily fixed in position with the clamping screws. Moreover, the fixation must be reliable, without play. Therefore, when choosing a reciprocating saw, pay attention to the reliability of the design of the support shoe.

BATTERY MODELS

Cordless reciprocating saws are produced, as a rule, in a lighter, “one-handed” version, although there are also classic, powerful models for intensive work, such as the Hilti WSR 22-A, Milwaukee HD28 SX-502C, Bosch GSA 36 V-LI, etc.

In such models, powerful batteries of 18-36 V are used, which allow you to work with the tool for several tens of minutes without recharging. However, professional cordless reciprocating saws are quite expensive. Less powerful "one-handed" cordless models are cheaper. Professional equipment (Makita, "blue" Bosch, Milwaukee, Metabo, Hilti) will cost about 7-15 thousand rubles, while household and semi-professional models can be bought for 4-7 thousand rubles.

When choosing a cordless tool, it is pointless to try to save on the battery. It should be, if possible,

more powerful. For continuous operation, you must have at least one battery in reserve, as well as a quick charger that can charge the battery in 1-3 hours.

For all-season work, you may need cold-resistant batteries. Such now exist - for example, some modifications of lithium-ion batteries easily tolerate frosts down to -20 ° C.

ALLIGATOR SAW

Separately, we will mention saws that use not one, but two saw blades moving along the saw bar in counter-movement to each other. Alligator saws are mainly used for cutting wood and building stone. Similar saws are available from DeWALT and Bosch. The main advantage of an alligator saw is the absence of a jerk when starting work. If the reciprocating saw must be applied to the workpiece so that the supporting sole necessarily rests on the workpiece, then the alligator saw can cut without jerking with any part of the blades. The disadvantage of alligator saws is their relative bulkiness (for example, the length of the DeWALT DWE399 model with the blade bed exceeds 90 cm, and the weight is 5.5 kg), so these saws are clearly not suitable for work in cramped conditions. In addition, alligator saws give a less accurate, wide (about 5 mm) slot and are not suitable for fine, “curly” work.

SIX ADVANTAGES OF RECIRCULAR SAWS

  1. Even, smooth cuts can be made in confined spaces.
  2. You can cut parts flush with the wall.
  3. You can cut almost any material, from plastic and wood (with nails) to stone, brick and metal.
  4. You can make complex, curved cuts.
  5. Compact models of reciprocating saws can be operated by holding the tool in the air with one hand. Such models are very convenient, for example, for cutting branches and branches from trees in the garden.
  6. When working, reciprocating saws produce relatively little noise and dust.
