Do-it-yourself metal bench is inexpensive, practical and fast. Gardens and parks are designed for relaxation, the comfort and aesthetic design of such areas is always given to furniture and decor. It is always pleasant to spend time outdoors, sitting on a bench in the shade of trees.

Metal benches are used for landscaping streets, parks and suburban areas.

Such functional decorations are suitable for any suburban or suburban area, perfectly fit into the interior and become an effective solution. Moreover, if they are made by hand, then the cost of their purchase is reduced, and they are quite simple and unpretentious in maintenance.

How to make a garden bench

Portable benches are very popular, because their manufacture does not take much time and money. In terms of physical properties, such metal structures are sufficiently stable, but if desired, they can be further strengthened in specially designated areas.

Before starting the manufacturing process, it is important to think through all the details and decide on the shape, type and sketch of the future bench. For the efficiency of the entire manufacturing process of such a product, it is better to prepare drawings with applied dimensions in advance. Such careful preparation will allow you to calculate the consumption of the required materials and use them economically in the construction process. After all, any option can be chosen: from a simple U-shape to an exquisite broken semicircle of an arbor bench.

most practical and universal choice can become a bench with a metal frame. And for greater convenience and additional attractiveness of the appearance of such a model, it is proposed to equip it with a back and seat made of wood.

This is a fairly simple form of a rectangular bench, but in an exquisite design, it will require a minimum consumption of basic materials, tools and construction time.

What you need to make a reliable shop

For a long time, in the manufacture of benches from metal, such a laborious and time-consuming process as casting has not been used. Market building materials offers the widest selection of metal products for every taste, universal purpose and quite easy to use.

After the shape and size of the product is determined, it is important to understand what materials and tools will be needed in the manufacturing and assembly process. A metal bench will require materials and tools such as:

  1. Bulgarian and circles for her. The tool is used for cutting metal composite and grinding sharp protruding corners of the structure.
  2. Pipe square shape. The choice of this material is due to its exceptional physical and technological properties. A square pipe can withstand heavy loads, it is quite pliable when working with it. Unlike analogues, channels and corners made of metal, it has high strength and is less prone to rust.
  3. Apparatus for welding. Welding is carried out at the attachment points of the front legs, backrest and additional ribs for structural stability under vertical loads.
  4. Pipe bending tools. With a solid back side of the product, even a slight bend in the metal frame can give a rather simple form of the product a sufficient degree of elegance and originality. It should be borne in mind that the most ergonomic is the angle of deflection during bending no more than 12-15 °.
  5. Drill and tape measure. Universal tools, indispensable in the process of working with materials such as metal and wood.
  6. Screws and bolts with nuts. It is these minor details that will ensure the strength of the bond between wood and metal, the reliability and durability of the entire structure as a whole.
  7. Beam or boards. The main structural details protruding and facing materials giving original appearance the whole product.
  8. Varnish, stain and brush for their application. Means of protection for the wooden parts of the bench.
  9. Anti-corrosion and decorative paint to choose from. The processing of the metal frame of the product with these materials will ensure its long service life and excellent appearance.

Handmade things carry a special charge of energy. They create an atmosphere of warmth and comfort in the interior of any room. The same applies to landscape design. Here are opportunities for implementation creative ideas even more: garden paths, podiums, flower beds, gazebos. Or such a pleasant and useful landscape item as a metal bench for a summer residence: it will not be difficult to make it yourself, with some experience and great desire. It will not leave your guests indifferent and will become a favorite place to relax while walking in the garden.

The advantages of benches made of metal and wood

most comfortable and practical materials for the manufacture of benches - wood and metal:

  • They lend themselves well to processing at home with their own hands and require minimum application special tools.
  • They allow you to make structures of wood and metal of complex configuration, assembled using standard fasteners.
  • They are available and relatively inexpensive materials.

Making a bench from solid wood and metal has several advantages:

  • Durability and reliability.
  • Durability.
  • Originality.
  • Convenience.

Design requirements

If you have little experience in making benches with your own hands, it will not be easy to come up with a design on your own. But even a good artist with a developed imagination may not take into account all the nuances that provide the necessary operational and technological qualities.

The "correct" bench should be stable, durable and collectible. Failure to comply with the requirements will make the wooden bench dangerous to use or simply will not make it possible to mount it. Let's dwell on them in more detail.

Product stability

This is a safety issue: the bench should not tip over when it is sat on. Stability is ensured in various ways, which are taken into account at the stage of drawing development. They depend on the types of products that can be portable and stationary.

Stationary garden benches are firmly fixed in place. In the design of their legs, you need to make additional mounting elements:

  • If the bench is installed on a hard and even surface (asphalt or concrete), then it can be fixed with anchor bolts. For this purpose, brackets with holes are welded to the legs.

  • When installed on the ground, the legs are fixed using local concreting. Their length must be calculated taking into account the part that goes underground. Rods are attached to the legs of finished products that were not installed permanently, increasing their length.

A portable bench is convenient because it can be used anywhere and on any surface without resorting to installation. But this is also its minus: it becomes much more difficult to ensure stability.

It is necessary to ensure that the bases of the legs are located in the same plane parallel to the seat. For precise installation, you will need to do it yourself or purchase ready-made fixtures. You can also use ordinary clamps, a bench square and a large workbench with a flat surface.

Advice! To increase stability, it is better to make the legs with a slight angle of inclination (8 - 15 degrees) in the front and rear directions. This will help avoid tipping over.

All specified parameters should be strictly adhered to: lengths, distances, angles, alignment, etc. Therefore, it is better to use drawings prepared by professionals. Finding them on the Internet is not so difficult. And if you want to make an exclusive with your own hands, it is much easier to do this by making changes to the finished assembly scheme. No one discourages you from realizing your creative potential, but by working according to the model, you will make fewer mistakes. Having a lot of options before your eyes is useful for developing your own ideas.

To make furniture truly stable with your own hands, you need to pay special attention to its strength.

How to make a durable bench

The stability and durability of the finished product depends on the strength. Design solutions and the choice of ways to connect parts help to ensure it. Details made of metal and wood are quite durable. But assembling them into a single whole, you need to monitor the rigidity of the structure.

Non-separable joints (welded or riveted) do not guarantee high strength: If the contact surface of the mating parts is too small, they may break off under load.

When assembling with rivets, one must not forget that two adjacent parts must be connected at least at two points. The more you make the distance between the points, the harder the pairing. This rule applies to bolted (screw) connections. Here also, remember to take measures against spontaneous unscrewing and use lock nuts or lock washers.

Advice! Determine in which direction the greatest load will act between a pair of assemblies, and position the holes for bolts or rivets so that the line between two adjacent points points in the direction of this load.

But it is not always possible to increase the mating surface or the number of connection points of parts, and sometimes it does not make sense at all. In such cases, stiffeners are used, transverse bars or additional supports are introduced into the structure.

To prevent the metal legs from “moving apart”, their connection only with the base of the bench is not enough: they need at least one more common point, which can be obtained with the help of transverse strips that combine the front leg with the back, and the left side with the right.

Advice! If the wooden bench is very long, it may sag under load in the central part. An additional pair of legs will effectively cope with this problem.

Collectability of the structure

An important point may be overlooked by the designer - the issue of collection. But if you have planned to make a bench with your own hands, you need to remember this all the time.

Sometimes what is drawn on paper cannot be realized technologically. Therefore, when preparing sketches of a future product, pay attention to such points:

  • If the design uses metal pipes that need to be bent, the drawings include radii corresponding to the nomenclature of the pipe bender rollers. Arrange bolted and riveted connections for easy tool access.

  • Consider the location of the technological bases used to control the angles and distances between the mounted parts. Accurately calculate all dimensions and lay down tolerances for deviations, otherwise during assembly you may expect an unpleasant surprise in the form of parts not matching.

  • Try to think over the entire manufacturing process so that the components arrive at the assembly as prepared and processed as possible, without the need to sharpen, drill and bend in place.

In some cases, it may be better to do certain operations at the installation stage. For example, if you cannot accurately determine the location of a hole on a part in a free state, then drill it already at the time of assembly. Be sure to provide for this possibility in the design of the product.

Action algorithm

To make original benches for a summer house or a garden from metal and wood with your own hands, you need:

  • Decide whether your product will be stationary or portable.
  • Decide on the overall dimensions.
  • Prepare preliminary sketches in which to take into account design elements.
  • Pick up drawings of furniture similar in design and modify them according to the sketches.
  • Purchase material and fasteners.
  • Produce the manufacture of parts specified in the specification.
  • Execute assembly.

Advice! Making furniture for a summer house with your own hands, you can save a lot if you develop a sketch based on the materials, accessories and tools available.

Forged garden bench do it yourself (2 videos)

Garden bench - perhaps the most common furniture in the world. suburban area. This is natural, because the garden involves relaxation and enjoyment of nature. And it is best to admire the surrounding vegetation while sitting on a comfortable bench.

Description and dimensions

The simplest metal bench for a summer residence consists of two supports and a seat. For greater comfort of vacationers, a backrest is provided.

Thematic material:

Benches made of metal without the use of other materials (wood, plastic, etc.) are classified as anti-vandal.

However, it is irrational to install such furniture in a home garden. After all, metal has dozens of times greater thermal conductivity, sitting on it is uncomfortable and even harmful to health. Therefore, it is better to build a country bench according to the formula: metal carcass+ wooden seat with backrest.

Bench scheme from profile pipe section 25x30 mm and wooden beam 60x30 mm.

The size of the bench is selected individually. But there are a few rules to keep in mind:

  1. The length of the bench is determined at the rate of 0.6 m per person.
  2. Width - at least 30 cm.
  3. Back height - from 30 cm.
  4. The angle between seat and back is from 105° to 120°.
  5. The height of the bench is determined by the length of the tibia (up to the popliteal fossa). Usually it is 38-45 cm.

If the bench is above 45 cm, then the legs hang down, when below 30 cm - the knees are bent at an acute angle, which impedes blood circulation and manifests itself in the form of an uncomfortable sensation of stiff legs. Another nuance that requires attention when designing is the relative position of the back and seat. If the angle between them approaches a straight line, then you will have to sit, as if swallowed by scrap. From a physiological point of view, it is good for the spine… But it is inconvenient.

Options for the location of wooden parts

There are two ways to place the bars - along and across. There is much less work with the longitudinal one, but the transverse one allows you to make a more homely and comfortable bench.

The location of the bar across - 1, along - 2

Given that the frame is the same in both cases, additional work required only for drilling holes and making wooden elements.

In case of damage, it is much easier to change transversely located lamellas, and such repairs are cheaper.

Bench protective cover

Wood and metal are treated separately. For the frame, it is better to use a primer. IN ideal- minium lead, which will protect the metal frame from corrosion for decades. Especially when you consider that in the country such garden furniture for six months is under the snow.

The tree can be simply painted. But if you pre-oil it, let it dry for a couple of days, then apply varnish in two layers, then such a coating is guaranteed to protect the wood from environmental influences.

In any case, color compatibility and design ideas are important. For example, if the frame is covered with Kuzbasslak, then it is better to pierce the wooden parts, this will emphasize the natural texture of the material.

To make the protection of the bars effective, the processing is carried out before fixing to the skeleton.

Frame raw material

Depending on the type of metal base, the following types of garden benches are distinguished:

  • forged;
  • from a professional pipe;
  • from corners;
  • from scrap metal.

Forged benches

  1. machine (cold) forging;
  2. artistic (manual).

In the first case, the finished product is welded from elements subjected to machine processing (casting, stamping, rolling). To create a garden bench from such components, a drawing is required on which all the details and their locations are marked. The elements are fixed by welding. Then the seams are cleaned, polished, and the finished product is primed. Such a bench for a summer residence will cost 5 times cheaper than that made by artistic forging.

But a hand-forged shop without special skills cannot be made. Sidewalls can be bought separately and the seat can already be fixed on them. On the one hand, this is a good solution, because you can independently adjust the length of the bench, but on the other hand, such pleasure is expensive. It takes a blacksmith a whole day to make one element. This is reflected in the price. Forged garden bench - a very expensive thing.

But we are in a hurry to notice that if you scrupulously, without deviating one iota from the drawing, assemble a bench from machine forged elements, then carefully process and paint the welds, then 99% of people will not distinguish such a garden bench from a more expensive one, forged by hand.

Bench made of profiled pipe

This is the most comfortable material to use. For the manufacture of the frame of the bench, a pipe of square or rectangular section is used. Its advantage is high resistance to physical impact, ease of assembly and low price.

Pipes with a wall thickness of 2-3 mm are sufficient to support weights up to 300 kg. It is only necessary to correctly draw up a drawing and select elements from wood of the appropriate thickness.

Details from a professional pipe can be bent independently. Before bending, the pipe is densely filled with fine sand. And the finished structural elements are fixed either by welding or by bolts.

Special requirements are placed on fasteners that connect wooden elements. They should have rounded hats to prevent damage to clothing.

Benches from the corner

It is as convenient to work with this material as with a professional pipe, bolt fixation is simple. It's just harder to bend the corner. A drawing for the manufacture of an elementary bench can be sketched by hand, the main thing is to maintain symmetry and maintain dimensions.

In the country, such furniture looks organic, especially if you paint it in the same style with the surrounding objects.

Scrap shop

This is the most creative direction in the manufacture of furniture for summer cottages. There can be no exact drawings. Only general design ideas limit the owner's imagination.

You can use any metal that comes to hand. The main thing is to clearly imagine what you want to see in the country - a practical bench or a futuristic miracle that attracts the eyes of guests and passers-by.

Shop - an item that should be on everyone personal plot. However, it is not always possible to allocate funds for the purchase of a metal bench. Therefore, you can make a bench with your own hands from a profile pipe.

Advantages and disadvantages of a profile pipe

The profile pipe may have different shape sections:

  • oval;
  • diamond-shaped;
  • square
  • rectangular.

It is made of carbon and low-alloy steel, so it is very often used in both civil and industrial construction. Such a pipe can be easily cut, welded and bent. You can make beautiful out of it. garden gazebo, swing and sliding gates, children's swings, carousels, different kinds fences and other small architectural forms for a personal plot. Including a bench.

The professional pipe has:

  • increased level of resistance to high physical and mechanical loads;
  • a fairly reasonable price;
  • light weight of the finished bench design.

At the same time, it is very easy to work with her.

Pipes with a round (oval) section have a high degree of resistance to mechanical stress, so they are best suited for the manufacture of a metal yard bench. It is recommended to choose thin-walled pipes with a thickness of 1 to 4 mm, as they are easier to work with at home. The material is inexpensive, and the metal structure will be quite light.

A significant disadvantage of such a pipe is its susceptibility to corrosion, so the benches will need to be regularly painted with oil, alkyd, epoxy or polyurethane paint with preliminary priming and removal of the old coating and rust that has appeared. But if you properly care for such a product, then it will serve you for a long time.

Tools and materials for work

Metal pipes are not the only material that will need to be used to make a bench with your own hands. You will need:

  • pine boards for the arrangement of the base of the seats and backs;
  • powerful welding machine;
  • pack of electrodes - 3 mm;
  • angle grinder (or hacksaw);
  • powerful drill (for drilling wood and metal);
  • file or sandpaper;
  • exact level;
  • tape measure or regular meter;
  • planer for grinding work;
  • paint and primer for metal;
  • goggles (mask for welding) and gloves;
  • paint on wood (you can take varnish or stain);
  • reliable hammer;
  • large pliers;
  • wood bolts with nuts.

To bend the pipes, you will need a special tool "Snail", which can be used as a regular brake disc from the car. It will not damage the material.

How to make a metal frame for a garden bench with your own hands

Before proceeding with the manufacture of a bench of any type, it is necessary to carry out preparatory work, in particular, it is recommended to study the technology of bending and welding pipes in advance.

Metal pipe bending

In order to create bent elements, it is necessary to plug one end of the pipe with a cork, and pour fine sand into it, and then close it on the other side. Then place it in the bending device, clamping it between the protrusion on the brake disc and the pin, and then bend it to the desired angle.

If the pipe does not bend well enough, then you can use a blowtorch and heat the bend.

For the manufacture of various elements for the bench, it is best to take pipes with a round or oval section, as they lend themselves best to bending.

The sequence of manufacturing a house adjoining bench without a back

A bench without a back is a very simple design, so for its manufacture it will be necessary to make three rectangles, which are connected to each other by pipes that act as a seat.

To make a shop, you will need to take:

  • a metal square or rectangular pipe 11 meters long (rolled section 30x30 mm);
  • 2 pieces of profile pipe 2.3 meters each;
  • 6 pieces of 60 cm;
  • 6 pieces of 45 cm;
  • 8 wooden planks 6 cm wide;
  • 24 bolts with nuts.

To make an ordinary bench without a back, it is necessary to weld 3 rectangles prepared in advance, and then connect them together with two guide pipes, which will serve as a frame for the seat. Further work should proceed according to plan:

  1. Long support segments must be placed horizontally, and shorter ones must be mounted vertically.
  2. In the process of welding the cut pieces of pipes, it is necessary to maintain the angles of the supports, since they must be exactly 90 degrees.
  3. After carrying out all the welding work, it is necessary to clean all the seams well with a special grinder or an ordinary file.
  4. Then the seams must be well primed.
  5. After the frame is welded, on each of the supports you need to drill 8 holes (symmetrically located) for attaching the boards.
  6. To prevent the appearance of rust, the frame of the bench must be coated with paint for metal.
  7. Wooden boards are recommended to be impregnated with wood stain.
  8. If desired, wooden boards can be replaced with rectangular pipes. They just need to be welded to the structure and also painted with anti-corrosion paint.
  9. In order for sharp corners not to interfere, the slats can be laid in a specially prepared metal frame. It will take 1.2 m of pipe.

How to weld a bench frame with a small back

You will need:

  • profile pipe with a section of 25x25 mm (8 m);
  • pine boards (thickness 30 and 25 mm) for the seat and backrest.

For the frame device, you need to prepare in advance:

  1. Profiled pipe - 1.55 m. To create a jumper between two supports.
  2. 2 bent pieces of pipe 78 cm each. Supports for the back of the bench.
  3. 2 pieces of pipe 35 cm each. For making the base for the seat.
  4. 2 pieces of pipe 39 cm each. For the front supports.
  5. 2 pieces of pipe 20 cm each. To strengthen the front supports.
  6. 4 steel plates 40x40 mm. For the manufacture of stands for supports.
  7. 2 bent steel strips 45 cm each. For connecting future supports.

To make the seat you will need:

  • 3 pine boards: length - 1.6 m, width - 6 cm, thickness - 3 cm (for the base of the seat);
  • 3 boards: length - 1.6 m, width 6 cm, thickness - 2.5 cm (for the back);
  • 24 bolts with nuts.

The work on making a bench consists of several stages:

  1. First you need to weld the crossbar and two pieces of pipe 35 cm long. The jumper should be exactly in the center of each of the pieces and at an angle of 90 degrees.
  2. It is necessary to weld two bent pieces of pipe 78 cm long to this design. It is necessary to weld at the place of the bend.
  3. Then the front elements of the supporting structures must be welded to the workpiece. In this case, the location of their connection should be 9 cm from the base of the bench.
  4. In order to increase the strength of the bench, the front supports must be welded to a pipe, which will serve as a transverse jumper.
  5. Next, you need to weld 2 arcs between the supports and fix them at the ends of the legs. The finished product must be well polished in places of welding seams.
  6. Then metal structure must be primed and painted with a special anti-corrosion paint.
  7. On the finished structure, it is necessary to symmetrically arrange wooden boards, which will serve as the basis for the seat.
  8. Before fixing the boards, they must be treated with varnish or stain. Boards are attached to the design of the bench with the help of special bolts with round flat heads. Thicker and stronger boards are used for the bottom, and slightly thinner for the back. If necessary, they can be painted with any oil paint. If there are no wooden boards, then the same metal pipes with a rectangular section can be used for the seats.

For convenience, you can make metal armrests on the bench. To do this, you need to take two pieces of pipe 75 cm each and simply bend them at an angle of 90 degrees, and then weld them on the sides to the metal frame. Process the seams with a grinder or file. The armrests can also be painted.

If you make rounded soles at the legs, then on such a bench you can also swing.

Finishing the bench after its assembly

After the whole structure is assembled, you can simply paint it with a special paint for iron. With the help of varnish or stain, it is recommended to process the wooden planks of the seat and back, and then the bench will acquire a beautiful natural color. Such a bench will look great on any personal plot. The decor is chosen taking into account landscape design.

You can independently sew soft comfortable pillows and bedspreads for the back. Children and the elderly will be very comfortable to sit on them on warm summer days.

Video: how to make a bench from metal pipes without a diagram

Whatever design of the street bench you choose, profile metal pipes can significantly reduce the cost of the finished product, while its appearance and strength will remain at the highest level. These benches will look great on the backyard. country house or cottage.

The assembly technology of the bench is simple: a metal frame is made in stages by welding, and then wooden bars are bolted to it. The beam is pre-planed, sanded, painted or simply varnished.

A profile pipe differs from a simple (round) section: a rectangle or a square. Profiles are massively used both in national and private households (the foundations of light buildings and trade stalls, awnings for cars, park and country swings, verandas, fences, gates and gates, garden benches). This material contains a description and a photo - video guide on how to independently make a simple bench from metal profile and a wooden beam, with a wooden back.

Materials and tools

We will consider the simplest and most inexpensive design.

To create it without fail, we need the tools and materials listed below.

Pipe profile, round head bolts, and wooden blocks, come in handy and the simplest machine for bending pipes (see Do-it-yourself pipe bender for a profile pipe).

  1. Profile-25x25.
  2. Bar 40x80 - seat.
  3. Beam 20x60 back.
  4. Welding inverter, F3 electrodes.
  5. Corners grinder (Bulgarian), saw.
  6. Electric drill with polishing wheel, semi-circular and flat files.
  7. Locksmith angle, level and tape measure.
  8. Plane.
  9. Brushes, paint for metal.
  10. Paint on wood, light varnish.
  11. Button head bolt, washer and nut.
  12. Pliers, metalwork hammer.

Basic drawing and parts manufacturing

Making a bench from square profile does not require large material costs and significant time costs.

Below are the drawings - sketches, benches from a bar and a profile.

To make such a bench, you will need 6 meters of profile - 20x25 or 25x25 mm, as well as bars for the lower part of the bench - 40 mm and bars for the back - 20 mm, 5 meters each.

From metal pipe you need to make a frame.

  • 1 Profile - pipe - 1500 mm (horizontal crossbar between the legs).
  • 2 x 750mm lengths of pipe bent at 30 degrees (one-piece back and rear legs).
  • 2 Pipes 360 mm each (seat).
  • 2 Pipes 400 mm each (front legs).
  • 2 Pipes 220 mm each (kerchiefs of the front legs).
  • 4 Plates 30 x 30 mm or large washers from Ф 32 mm (pyataki under the legs).
  • 2 Curved metal strips 4 x 25 and 500 mm (rigidity of fastening legs and seat on each side)

In the manufacture of the wooden part of the bench, bars of the required length will be required.

  • 3 bars - 1650 mm, in width - 80 mm and in thickness - 40 mm (lower flooring).
  • 3 bars - 1650 mm, in width - 60 mm and in thickness - 20 mm (backrest flooring).

Connect the frame to the board with rounded bolts, washers and nuts - 24 sets.

Step by step assembly sequence

When all parts of the future bench are prepared, all that remains is to connect them. You need to start with the seat frame:

  1. First of all, it is necessary to weld a transverse tube and two blanks of 360 mm each. The transverse profile must be placed exactly in the middle of two 360mm blanks, at a right angle.
  2. Then, two 30-degree curved profile sections of 750 mm each are welded to the resulting part. Place of welding, under the place of bending.
  3. Further, to the already assembled part, the front legs are cooked. It should be noted (see drawing) the place of welding of the front legs to the seat is shifted by 10 cm from their beginning, the connection is made at an angle of 15-20 degrees.
  4. The front legs of the future bench are connected to the transverse profile with scarves (blanks 220 mm each) for structural rigidity.
  5. And now the frame is almost ready. It remains to weld 2 arcs (blanks from a strip of 4x25x500mm) between the legs and nickels on the legs.
  6. The finished part is ground (welding joints and seams), primed and painted with exterior paint. At this stage, a country bench made of metal should look like in the photo below.

Then it remains only to symmetrically place on this part the prepared bars for the back and seat. Treat the bars with a planer, stain with a stain and open with varnish or simply paint with paint for outdoor woodwork - you need to do it in advance. A thicker beam - 40 mm goes to the seat, and a thin one - 20 mm to the back. Fasten the beam with a drill with a drill for metal and a pair of bolts on both sides of the beam.

How to make a more complex, but much more beautiful shop yourself, is shown in detail in the video.

At the end of this article, it would be reasonable to note that the example of assembling a bench for garden plot is just the baseline. Having assembled the first bench, you may want to make a more complex design with decorative curls and other improvements. The country shop will become a favorite place to relax and unwind in the air.
