Devices that do not require a permanent connection to the mains, but work at the expense of a battery, are more convenient in terms of mobility than network counterparts. But for the sake of autonomy, you have to sacrifice functionality, performance and often put up with the large weight of the tool. However, you can always choose the optimal combination of parameters. Especially if you choose products from well-known brands. Popularity of a manufacturer does not necessarily mean high cost. Models of the budget class can quite cope with the task, if they are chosen correctly.

Features of cordless saws

Cordless electric hacks have the same functions as their online counterparts. The main advantage of such tools is the ability to work autonomously, without requiring a constant connection to the source electric current... In addition, it is more convenient to work at height with a reciprocating saw with a battery, since the cord does not interfere and does not distract attention.

The disadvantages include less power, and, accordingly, performance. It should be borne in mind that the battery makes the instrument heavier, and if there are several, even more so. Heavy weight can restrict movement (after all, the tool is hand) and lead to rapid fatigue.

Experienced experts generally believe that the term power is incorrect to apply to electric hacks of this type. It is more correct to evaluate the efficiency in terms of battery performance. The operating time of the tool depends on the battery capacity, which is measured in ampere-hours.

As a rule, new tools are powered by removable batteries. This significantly increases the service life of the electric hacker, because the failure of the non-removable battery will lead to the need to replace the tool completely. In addition, removable batteries do not need to be interrupted while recharging.

When choosing an electric hacker with a battery, first of all, you need to decide whether the power tool will often be used, what amount of work will have to be done with it. For light loads, a not very expensive cordless reciprocating saw will do. As a rule, these options come with kits of basic consumables, but very rarely such tools are supplied with batteries. Usually batteries and chargers have to be purchased separately.

If you need to work in low-light conditions, a rechargeable electric hanger can be useful, which has lED backlight on the front.

Another important criterion is the type of engine. There are two options to choose from: brush (collector) and brushless (brushless). The second option has a significant advantage in terms of longer tool life.

Value of technical characteristics

The average weight of battery-powered electric hawkers ranges from 1 to 3.5 kg. Typically, professional grade models are heavier than compact household tools. In expensive quality units, durable materials are used, as well as various add-ons to expand functionality. All this naturally increases the mass of the reciprocating saw.

Modern high-quality models from reliable manufacturers can last up to 5 hours on a single charge. But you should always remember that the battery charge can run out at the most inopportune moment. It can be a good idea to bring extra batteries for your reciprocating saw with you, especially if there is a lot of work ahead. For ease of use, some models of rechargeable electric hacks are equipped with a charging indicator. It can be placed either on the battery itself or directly on the tool body.

The best batteries include lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries, which have no “memory effect”. You can charge them in any condition. In addition, these batteries are protected against overcharging and overheating. The 10.8V Li-ion batteries are charged from minimum to maximum in approximately 3.5 hours. The operating time of the tool with such a battery will be about 2 hours. During this time, you can have time to cut from 30 to 190 branches with a diameter of up to 60 mm. A budget reciprocating saw on a 3 A * h battery can work for about 1 hour. More precise values \u200b\u200bare indicated in the operating instructions for each specific model.

The best reciprocating saws manufacturers

When choosing an electric hawk, it is quite reasonable to give preference to manufacturers that have proven themselves on the positive side. A quality tool will last a long time and will not present unexpected unpleasant surprises.

First of all, you should consider cordless reciprocating saws from trusted companies with a long history and good reputation.

The German company Bosch is heard by many. Almost everyone has used some tool from this manufacturer. Bosch appliances are traditionally distinguished by their reliability and functionality, comply with internal quality standards and are able to satisfy the needs of the most sophisticated consumers. In the lineup of Bosch reciprocating saws, you can find both budget and quite expensive models.

Japanese manufacturer Makita is deservedly considered a giant in the field of power tools. This is not to say that every reciprocating saw of this company is devoid of flaws. Owners of budget models often complain about a lack of power, or even the wrong parts. But on the other hand, professional-class electric hackers are considered one of the best, both in terms of ease of use, and in terms of productivity and, of course, reliability.

The German quality of Metabo electric hacks speaks for itself. There are practically no complaints about this manufacturer's saber saws.

Products of one of the oldest German firms in the production of power tools Aeg are rightfully included in the list of the best in quality. The disadvantages noted by owners of budget models from this manufacturer, as a rule, are the result of using the tool not in accordance with the manufacturer's recommended loads.

The American company DeWalt, which specializes in the production of various power tools, is also widely known. The company is actively introducing innovative solutions into its products, which cannot but arouse interest.

The reciprocating saw is unique in its capabilities. Most building and finishing materials made of metal, stone, plastic and wood are subject to the sharp teeth of the electric hacker. A narrow, sharpened blade at the end is able to go through a blank wall: the length of the cut reaches 35 cm. But this is not the most interesting ...

Due to the design features, it can cut a pipe or other protrusion flush with the wall. Neither a jigsaw, nor a grinder, nor a circular saw can cope with such a task. A toothy predator will be able to accurately cut an opening of a complex shape in a masonry made of foam concrete blocks or even bricks. And the "saber" is also light, it is convenient to wield it on top: for example, standing on a ladder, trim the upper crowns or cut thick branches in the garden.

What's in the teeth with a reciprocating saw

Power is one of the main characteristics of a reciprocating saw. When choosing a tool, it is advisable to represent the range of tasks ahead. So, for cutting firewood, caring for garden trees a power of 400-500 watts is quite enough. For sawing wood with nails, trimming structures made of metal, plastic, composites, you will need a stronger engine.

The most powerful models often belong to the alligator class: in them, the working body is two or even several saw blades moving in opposite directions, which significantly increases productivity. Of course, a powerful tool gets it done faster. On the other hand, the more power, the greater the weight of the saw, the higher its cost.

Reciprocating saw selection by parameters

When choosing a reciprocating saw, you should pay attention to the parameters of the stroke (its frequency, length), the presence of a pendulum stroke, the method of adjusting the speed. The parameters of the cut are also important: they usually indicate the depth of cut of wood and steel, plus the diameter of the cut of the steel pipe.

The length of the working blade stroke in different models is in the range of 19-32 mm. For wood processing, it must be greater than for metal.

The pendulum motion (by the way, it is not available in all models, and there are solutions that allow you to turn it off) is needed mainly to increase the speed of cutting wood, with its help the saw makes fast and rough cuts. If necessary, this function allows you to make a reverse movement, for example, if you need to slightly change the cutting path, free the working area from sawdust.

Speed \u200b\u200bcontrol

Most models provide the ability to adjust the speed, that is, the selection of the optimal cutting mode for each specific material. The adjustment can be carried out in a stepless way - with a sensitive travel button. The harder the operator presses on it, the more powerful the cut is. Pressing harder - sawing faster. In this case, most often the tool runs at maximum speed, which quickly wears out the engine.

With stepwise adjustment, the engine speed is set before starting work, taking into account the properties of the material being processed. The parameter is set by turning the wheel or by the trigger. In some household models, divisions indicate not the number of revolutions, but the materials with which you can work.

Constant electronics - the best option adjustment. Depending on how the cut is going, the machine itself selects the required rotation speed, which allows it to work effectively even with difficult materials.

Reciprocating Saw Cutting Depth

To adjust the cutting depth, the reciprocating saw has a movable stop: the so-called support shoe, or platform overhang. The main purpose is to limit the length of the saw blade to the size of the workpiece, which reduces tool wear and makes the cut more accurate. The stop slides along the saw blade and locks into position. Adjustment is carried out either with a key or by pressing a button.

In advanced models, the thrust device can change tilt, rotate in different planes. In a word, it makes it possible to optimally prepare for work with a workpiece not only of a certain thickness, but also of almost any complex shape. Conveniently resting on the body of the tool and using the found stable position, it is easier to make accurate, even sawing.

Sometimes you need to cut a workpiece that is too wide. That is, a longer saw blade is required than the manufacturer of that particular model allows. You will most likely be able to pick up the equipment and cut it, but it should be borne in mind: the quality of the cut will deteriorate. Constant work with larger tooling can lead to rapid tool wear.

Saw blade features

The saw blade is a replaceable working unit and is mounted in a chuck. According to the method of attachment, the tool shanks (the non-working part, which is responsible for fixing in the chuck) are divided into original and universal. The latter are suitable for any brands with a universal type of attachment.

Each material, be it wood, wood with nails, metal, concrete or plastic, has its own canvases. The choice of a headset also depends on the requirements for the quality of sawing.

If you plan to work with different materials, then the possibility of changing the tooling without using a key will reduce the preparation time. In these models, the saw blade is inserted into the chuck or removed by pressing a button on the body. On alligator saws, the saw blades are changed as a whole set.

On a note

You should not trust the figured cutting of a reciprocating saw (the processing accuracy will be extremely low). Its main purpose is destruction; the electric hawk will serve as an excellent assistant when you need to quickly remove the old fence, dismantle window frames, heating radiators, etc.

By the way, power for a household tool is not such an indicative characteristic. After all, for home master does not have of particular importance, he will saw off the pipe in 35 or 45 seconds.

If the plans include sawing thick wood, for example, a bar with a cross section of 100 x 100 mm, then the presence of the pendulum stroke function will increase productivity by about a third, and, accordingly, with large volumes of work, it will save your time. The tool will perfectly cope with sawing boards without this function.

Powerful or even more powerful?

Like any other power tool, reciprocating saw manufacturers offer models that are tailored to different consumers. Often, home craftsmen prefer professional equipment, believing that it is more reliable. They are not always right. Household electric hackers are lighter, more compact, cheaper, and in terms of capabilities they are not much different from professional ones. Sometimes they even compete in power. The difference is that the "professional" engine is designed for longer loads. When making a choice, evaluate in which mode and for what purposes you will use the tool. Here it must be borne in mind: the reciprocating saw is held in weight and guided by hands, therefore the less its weight, the more convenient it is to work.

For models with high power, it is important to have a soft start function - a dynamic increase in the load on the power grid at the moment of switching on. For long periods of time, a low vibration level is important.

Comfort comes first

Choosing an electric hacker only by technical characteristics and a picture on the Internet is like choosing a car by color. Before you buy a saber, hold it in your hands.

A test drive is also needed here. The models differ greatly both functionally and ergonomically.

Notice how many different configurations of designs and shapes of handles. The D-shaped handle is comfortable when working in different planes, contributes to a secure hold.

There are models in which the tooling can be inserted with the teeth up and down, which in some cases can be very beneficial.

And, of course, there is a fundamental choice: the network model versus the battery model. Rechargeable batteries are mobile, however, when work intensively requires frequent recharging.

Saw Blades Marking - Alloys:

"Cutting" alloys and blades

HCS - high carbon steel. Saw blades made of it are used for wood processing, wood-based panels, plastic

HSS - high-speed steel. Goes to the production of fittings for processing mild steel and non-ferrous metals

Bim - bimetallic compound from HCS and HSS.

It is used in the manufacture of canvases for professional processing of wood and metals, it is characterized by increased wear resistance

NM - vanadium carbide alloy. Copes with the task of processing fiberglass, ceramic tiles, aerated concrete

CV - chrome vanadium steel. CV saws for teeth in wood and plastic (differs from HCS in greater wear resistance)

Reciprocating Saw Applications

Tell me, what is such a sawing-cutting tool in the arsenal of our domestic craftsmen besides the usual mechanical hacksaw? Most often a jigsaw or "grinder". Try using just one of these tools to flush the protruding fittings and punch a large, neat hole in the wall. Will it work? As they say, if you suffer for a long time ... But the reciprocating saw will do both at once!

The sharp, powerful reciprocating saw blade crushes concrete, iron, not to mention wood. The range of tools with longitudinal motor and saw blade is wide. There is a household and professional tool, mains and battery, and even hybrid. Application features are primarily related to the hardness of the processed material, quality requirements and cut shape.

Sawing a tree with a reciprocating saw

For work mainly on wood, you can choose a low-power reciprocating saw, but with a saw blade tolerance of the order of 30-40 cm, in a word, with long equipment. The pendulum function will also be useful, allowing you to speed up the cutting of wood. However, when this option is enabled, the cut is rough.

Actually, there are plenty of power tools for working with relatively soft wood. The chain saw is indispensable for felling trees and preparing firewood. The circular cuts lumber up and down. Without the precision of a miter saw, it is difficult to achieve accuracy when installing plinths, cornices, etc. But the saber is unique in that it can do it all together, albeit a little! He will cut a beam, brushwood and a young log for firewood, he will help to adjust the same skirting boards ... It will cope, except perhaps on the scale of a professional finisher. And he will also remove the old fence by sawing the boards together with nails. In "omnivorousness" she has no equal.

Universal clearing saw

The medium-sized segment (about 1,000 W) is intended mainly for cutting metal, plastics, and composites.

Expert advice

When choosing a reciprocating saw for woodworking with a pendulum function, give preference to models with the ability to turn it off. This will allow you to work in two modes, coarse and clean cut. In the case of multipurpose use, it makes sense to buy a tool with average values \u200b\u200bof the main characteristics.

The standard configuration is, in principle, suitable for a wide variety of jobs, but with decent power, it has a corresponding weight and price. When choosing a tool mainly for processing pipes and profiles, pay attention to the cutting parameters. They will be different for a steel pipe and a steel plate (of course, for wood too). By the way, the shorter the stroke length and cutting depth specified by the manufacturer, the more favorable the price / quality ratio of the tool. Sometimes the craftsmen try to "outwit" the situation by setting the desired length of the blade to the detriment of the cleanliness of the cut. But for equipment when working with different materials, one way or another you have to fork out.

Hybrid technology

Hybrid saws are capable of solving a special range of tasks. Some, like a jigsaw, are "sharpened" to dashingly cut intricate shapes, others perfectly cope with the formation of crowns in trees and bushes. The third, the most interesting - models of the "alligator" class - have great performance. They are equipped with two saw blades that move in opposite directions. Such "gnaw" (grind) both the trunk and the stone. However, such a saw headset is wider than that of a conventional reciprocating saw, which limits the ability to use the tool in awkward narrow places. And such a saw blade does not have a pointed end that can go right through a thick and sturdy wall.

To work with concrete and brick, a network reciprocating saw with a power of more than 1 kW is required. Frisky, but heavy in weight, the tool will help speed up masonry work, and during reconstruction, it will destroy unnecessary walls or make new openings in them. For a powerful tool, it becomes important to have a soft start function, so that the reciprocating saw does not cause overvoltage in the network when switched on.

Specialized hybrid models of the alligator class are also good for working with stone. However, choosing between a powerful conventional electric hacker and an "alligator", one must keep in mind that, first, a hybrid instrument is not universal; secondly, it differs in the original cartridge, and the price of its equipment is twice the usual one.

Adapt in place

Due to pruning tasks, a comfortable horizontal surface is not always assumed. Working on weight, and even in cramped conditions, precise movement is assisted by a movable stop. (Its other names are support shoe and platform overhang.) In most models, the device is movable, takes the desired slope, allowing you to rest in a comfortable and stable position. In addition, the support shoe simply slides forward, thereby adjusting (reducing) the length of the saw blade to the workpiece for a clean cut. The stop is fixed in the desired position by pressing the button or turning it, tightening it using a wrench.

Adjust to the material

The engine speed control function allows you to select the optimal mode of work with the material. The simplest way stepless adjustment - the stronger the pressure on the start button, the higher the speed - favorably affects the price of the tool, but requires the operator's experience. It is more convenient for a beginner to increase the speed and speed up the process, however, this manner of work provokes quick wear.

Step adjustment allows you to set the required speed before starting work by moving a lever or wheel, taking into account the properties of the material. Wood requires less revolutions, metal - more. To simplify the choice, manufacturers often schematically indicate the materials themselves on the case, and not numbers.

And finally, equipping the tool with electronic control of engine speed or constant electronics allows you not to think at all about the influence of the resistance of materials on the motor. The technique itself adjusts to the load, which is especially important for working with heterogeneous materials, for example, when dismantling buildings.

Chuck

The saw blade is attached to the chuck by pressing a button or using a key. The button is undoubtedly more convenient, it makes it easier to change the equipment. But here the type of cartridge is more important. The universal chuck differs from the original in the breadth of opportunities for acquiring accessories from various manufacturers, and there are many of them on the market. Its official name is “1/2” universal locking mechanism, which should be indicated on the package. Having a tool with a universal fastening, the master chooses the equipment, only based on the tasks at hand, without being interested in the shape of the shank, that is, the part responsible for fastening in the chuck. By the way, among original systems there are also such mounts that 8 fully justify their name. For example, the tooling can be inserted into the chuck in different positions, that is, teeth up and down.

Selection of paintings

The choice of a saw blade is determined by the hardness and structure of the material, as well as the requirements for the quality of work. When a smooth cutting surface is important, be it wood, plastic pipe, metal channel or foam block, it is recommended to work only with tooling designed for the specific material. To simplify the task, manufacturers mark the tooling for its intended purpose and indicate the grade of the cutting alloy by which the specialist can also navigate. In addition, the required saw blade can be selected according to the article, using the catalogs of equipment from leading manufacturers.

Marking of cutting alloys and special equipment

HCS - high carbon steel, ideal for cutting wood, plastic, laminate and fibreboard

HAS - high quality cutting steel suitable for processing non-ferrous metals, light types of stones and wood with nails

HSS - high speed steel for processing mild steel and non-ferrous metals

BiM - bimetallic joint of HCS and HSS, used for processing wood, metal plates, pipes, profiles and corrugated materials, it is characterized by increased wear resistance and flexibility of the saw blade

CV - chrome vanadium steel with high wear resistance, used for woodwork and plastic

HM / CT - an alloy of vanadium carbide, characterized by an increased service life, intended for processing fiberglass, ceramic tiles, aerated concrete and other building materials

All purpose - involves the use of equipment for any purpose, when the quality of the cut is not of particular importance

Flexible - flexible canvas for works in limited access

Progressor - progressive saw blade for splinter-free sawing

Pendulum principle

RECIPROCATING SAWS - REPRESENTATIVES OF THE POPULAR CLASS OF ELECTRIC SAWS, IN WHICH THE RETURN-PENDULUM (PENDULUM) SAWING MECHANISM IS USED. SUCH MECHANISM ALLOWS TO PRODUCE ACCURATE CUTTING ON A COMPLEX TRAJECTORY.

Saws based on a reciprocating mechanism have been known for many decades. In general, this class of tools is very extensive and includes, in addition to reciprocating saws, various alligator saws, jigsaws and other saws, which we will not touch upon in this article. Note that there are other names for saber saws: electric hacksaws, hacksaws, etc.

Abroad, saber saws are used very widely, in our country they have long remained a relatively uncommon type of tool. They were more or less in demand only among professional builders, and in everyday life people in the old fashioned use either a hand tool or a universal mechanized one (for example, a "grinder"). IN last yearshowever, the situation is changing, and interest in reciprocating saws is growing among non-professionals. Fortunately, there are many models of such a tool for household use, relatively affordable (3-4 thousand rubles).

The main advantage of reciprocating saws is the ability to perform cuts in tight spaces, in particular when dismantling wooden or reinforced concrete structures or water pipes. A reciprocating saw requires very little space; This is perhaps the only type of saw that can cut the protruding parts of the workpiece flush with the wall.

LONG ENOUGH

In addition to dismantling works, reciprocating saws in combination with the corresponding blades are widely used for cutting blocks of aerated and foam concrete, porous ceramics, etc.

In terms of productivity, reciprocating saws are inferior to circular or chain saws and have some restrictions on their use. With their help, for example, you cannot make blind cuts. But reciprocating saws have their own advantages. They can perform neat and precise cuts (much more accurately than with chain saws) to deeper depths than standard circular saws can do. Depending on the model, the maximum sawing depth of wood for reciprocating saws can be 350 mm, here, perhaps, only chain saws... And, of course, with the help of reciprocating saws, as well as with the help of jigsaws, you can make complex curvilinear cuts - here no other tool can keep up with them. The reciprocating motion of the canvas requires a certain accuracy from the master.

Under no circumstances should the saw blade rest against the work surface (for example, if the material is too thick) or against any other obstacles. Reckoning in the form of a broken blade usually comes quickly. Perhaps this is why manufacturers of power tools are in no hurry to establish the production of reciprocating saws for domestic use. In everyday life, by the way, saber saws are used most often for gardening. There, lighter and more compact models are in demand, which are convenient to hold on the weight with one hand.

FIVE IMPORTANT FEATURES OF THE RECIPROCATING SAW

The most important technical characteristics of reciprocating saws include the following.

Maximum cutting depth.

This value is indicated for different materials (usually for wood and metal). It corresponds to the length of the saw blade. Compact saws can be equipped with small blades (150 mm), and more powerful and heavy tools with files, usually up to 250 mm long, but there are files up to 450 mm long. Stroke frequency (stroke / min). Have different models the maximum stroke rate is 2500-3000 strokes / min. The maximum stroke rate determines the performance of the tool.

Stroke size (mm).

The amplitude of the saw blade stroke is different models from 20 to 30 mm. This parameter, together with the frequency, determines the linear speed of movement of the cutting blade relative to the material being processed. So, if the blade stroke is 30 mm, and the maximum frequency is 3000 strokes / min, then the maximum blade movement speed will be 90 m / min.

Power.

Classic reciprocating saws with mains power usually have a power of about 1 kW. You can find models with a power of 700-300 W, and more powerful ones (up to 1.5 kW). For intensive activity, of course, it is advisable to choose a more powerful tool, but it will differ in its large size and weight.

Tool weight.

The lightest models of reciprocating saws will weigh 1.2-1.3 kg, and the heaviest - up to 3.5-4 kg. Of course, there is always the temptation to choose a powerful and high-performance tool, but remember that you will have to keep it on weight most of the time when working with it!

ADDITIONAL OPTIONS

Pendulum stroke. When the pendulum stroke is turned on, the saw blade makes oscillatory movements not only up and down, but also along the cutting axis. This option is not available on all reciprocating saw models. It allows you to significantly increase productivity, but the quality of the cut deteriorates. In addition, the pendulum motion cannot be used for precise curved cuts. Overload protection. Automation that prevents the reciprocating saw from breaking when overheating. This option is equally useful both for professionals (when the load on the instrument is large) and in everyday life (an inexperienced user may accidentally overload the instrument).

Vibration damping.

In most tools, the main vibration dampers are the soft pads on the saw handles. For long-term, professional use, this is clearly not enough, therefore, in professional models there are vibration damping systems using counterweights.

Network cable.

The nature of the dismantling works involves a lot of movement around the facility, so the longer the supply cable (4-5 m or more), the better. Even more convenient is the cordless tool, which is now actively replacing network models.

CHOOSE SPEED!

When working, it must be remembered that for each type of material there is its own optimal blade speed. For plastics and laminates, a speed of 40-50 m / min is recommended. For soft and hard rocks

Saw blades for wood - from 50 to 90 m / min. And for metals in general, there is a large spread in speeds, depending on the type of metal or brand (steel). For example, ordinary steel can be cut at 50-90 m / min, aluminum at 80-110 m / min, and cast iron only at 30-50 m / min. In general, it is better not to try to set the maximum speed of the blade, as this significantly increases the risk of overheating and damage to the file.

In reciprocating saws, it may be possible to limit the maximum stroke frequency. For this, the instrument has a corresponding regulator, for example, in the form of a rotary wheel with a digital scale from one (minimum speed, several hundred strokes per minute) to six (maximum speed).

SAWS

The blade for work is selected by the type of material being processed, as well as by the pitch of the teeth and by the type of shank. Depending on the material being processed, there are several types of canvases:

  • dismantling (for working on wood with nails);
  • wood and plastic;
  • for metal;
  • for cast iron, abrasive metals, fiberglass;
  • universal;
  • various types of special blades for working on cardboard, frozen materials, drywall, etc.

It is also possible to note special models of blades, for example, for cutting pipes or flexible blades for flush cutting. There are also attachments for reciprocating saws, which can hardly be called canvases. For example, the Milwaukee HACKZALL and SAWZALL Reciprocating Saw Blade Kit includes 38mm and 75mm scrapers to remove very sticky silicone residues, putty, paint and rust, and a blade to remove damaged or spoiled grout between tiles.

Tooth pitch (usually the number of teeth per millimeter or inch, such as tooth per inch, TPI) is important when cutting thin sheets. For high-quality cutting, it is necessary that at least three teeth be immersed in the material being cut. For thin (up to 10 mm) metal plates or bars, it is recommended to use blades with a tooth pitch of 14 TPI, for metal blanks with a thickness of 10-20 mm, 10 TPI blades are suitable, etc. Variable pitch blades (eg 10/14 TPI) can also be used and are recommended for cutting hollow metal parts (eg water pipes). The material from which the blade is made is indicated on the packaging of the file. Sometimes this is just an indication of the type of material (for example, Bimetall - bimetal), sometimes a more detailed decoding is given (for example, Bimetall with a cobalt content of 8%). Detailed decoding allows you to more accurately select the blade for the metal being processed. Thus, a bimetal with a cobalt content of 8% is well suited for processing steel with a hardness of up to 45 HRC and soft non-ferrous metals and alloys. A bimetal blade with 11% cobalt content is used for cutting hard steel, stainless steel, titanium alloys.

The second handle is made in the form of a rifle forend near the thrust platform.

Such is, for example, the design of saws Bosch PSA 700 E, Makita JR3050T, INTERSKOL NP-120 / 1010E, Hilti WSR 900-PE, Milwaukee SSD 1100 X SAWZALL. There are, however, other layout options. For example, the Bosch PFZ 500 E, Black & Decker RS890K electric hawkers have handles above the swing axis. An even greater variety of shapes is observed with small one-handed saws. In them, the handle can be located both perpendicularly and at a slight angle to the axis of the pendulum stroke; be pushed to the back of the body or located in the middle of it. In general, there are many options, and therefore it makes sense to evaluate the convenience of the design yourself, and not by the picture. It is necessary to take the saw in hand, check its balancing, evaluate whether the handles are comfortable enough, how good the plastic from which the non-slip pads are made.

Ergonomic body design provides a secure grip even with gloves

As for the shank, now almost all models of reciprocating saws use a universal 13 mm shank, which means that the blades of any manufacturer will be interchangeable (in some compact models of reciprocating saws, jigsaw files with T-shaped shanks can be used).

LOOKING AT THE CASE

The classic design of the two-handed reciprocating saw body resembles that of a rotary hammer. In it, the main handle is brought back and is located perpendicular to the axis of the pendulum stroke and below it.

Check that the blade locking mechanism is also comfortable. It should not be too tight, so that you do not have to apply great force when turning the fixing part. Evaluate how easy it is to insert and remove the file.

In this case, the mechanism should not be too weak, there should be no play of the saw blade.

To work in confined spaces, you will need a tool that is as compact as possible. An important characteristic for him is the length of the body. For the most compact models, it does not exceed 300 mm. For example, the Milwaukee HACKZALL C12 HZ-0 cordless reciprocating saw is only 280 mm long.

SUPPORT SHOE

The design of the support shoe can be sliding. By moving the fence along the saw blade, we adjust its reach. This allows you to use the resource of the saw blade more carefully, and it can be more convenient for work. It is good if the base plate can change the angle of inclination for cutting parts at an angle.

All sliding and pivoting parts of the shoe mechanism should be easily fixed in position using clamping screws. Moreover, the fixation must be reliable, without backlash. Therefore, when choosing a reciprocating saw, pay attention to the reliability of the support shoe design.

BATTERY MODELS

Cordless reciprocating saws are usually produced in a lighter, "one-handed" version, although there are also classic, powerful models for intensive work, such as the Hilti WSR 22-A, Milwaukee HD28 SX-502C, Bosch GSA 36 V-LI, etc.

In such models, powerful batteries 18-36 V are used, which allow the instrument to work for several tens of minutes without recharging. However, professional cordless reciprocating saws are quite expensive. Less powerful "one-handed" battery models are cheaper. Professional equipment (Makita, "blue" Bosch, Milwaukee, Metabo, Hilti) will cost about 7-15 thousand rubles, and household and semi-professional models can be bought for 4-7 thousand rubles.

When choosing a cordless tool, it is pointless to try to save on the battery. It should be, if possible,

more powerful. For continuous operation, you must have at least one battery in reserve, as well as a quick charger capable of charging the battery in 1-3 hours.

For all-season work, you may need a cold-resistant battery. These exist now - for example, some modifications of lithium-ion batteries can easily tolerate frosts down to -20 ° C.

ALLIGATOR SAWS

We separately mention the saws, in which not one, but two saw blades are used, moving along the saw bar in the opposite direction to each other. Alligator saws are mainly used for sawing wood and building stone. Similar saws are available from DeWALT and Bosch. The main advantage of the alligator saw is that there is no jerk when starting work. If the reciprocating saw must be applied to the workpiece so that the support sole rests against the workpiece, then the alligator saw can cut without jerking with any part of the blades. The disadvantage of alligator saws is their relative bulkiness (for example, the length of the DeWALT DWE399 model together with the blade bed is more than 90 cm, and the weight is 5.5 kg), so these saws are clearly not suitable for working in cramped conditions. In addition, alligator saws give a less accurate, wide (about 5 mm) cut and are not suitable for fine, "curly" work.

THE SIX BENEFITS OF RECIPROCATING SAWS

  1. Can make straight, smooth cuts in confined spaces.
  2. You can saw off parts flush with the wall.
  3. You can cut almost any material, from plastic and wood (with nails) to stone, brick and metal.
  4. Complex, curved cuts can be made.
  5. Compact models of reciprocating saws can be operated by holding the tool in weight with one hand. Such models are very convenient, for example, for sawing off branches and twigs from trees in the garden.
  6. Reciprocating saws produce relatively little noise and dust during operation.
