The bedroom is the intimate place throughout the house. The entire interior of the room should be conducive to tranquility. Of course, curtains play an important role in all this. When choosing curtains for the bedroom, certain rules must be followed.

What curtains to choose for the bedroom

First of all, the fabric must be of high quality. Its density directly affects the amount of light in the room. You should also pay attention to the color scheme. Curtains should not be too different from the rest of the color scheme in the bedroom.

Some try to match the curtains to match the bed linen. However, this choice will be a bit costly, as the bed is changed at least once every few weeks. Curtains will not be replaced so often.

The most common types of curtains in the bedroom are the following.

Curtains with lambrequin

Lambrequin is a horizontal strip of dense fabric that adorns the upper part of the curtain composition. Complemented with various decorations such as tassels, flounces or cutouts. If earlier a lambrequin was considered an indicator of luxury, today it is a very common type of curtains in the bedroom.

It is best to choose natural fabrics: silk, linen or cotton. Ecology is very important in the bedroom, as it is responsible for our sound and healthy sleep. As for the length, here you have to choose everything individually.

If for you the bedroom is associated with twilight, then the best option there will be long curtains with a lambrequin. By type, lambrequins are divided into hard gang and soft piles. The first option is a rigid non-woven fabric of various shapes.

Soft piles are pieces of fabric that smoothly descend along the curtains. They are in perfect harmony with the main material and the result is a seemingly solid composition.

Roman and roll

The most economical type of curtains, as they include the least amount of fabric costs. Great for small bedrooms, where such curtains do not contribute to the weight of the entire interior. Often used in a minimalist style. Made from natural fabrics. The length usually reaches the windowsill.

Roller blinds are similar to Roman blinds. The main difference is that the fabric is impregnated with a special solution that protects the curtains from fading from sunlight.

They are used as an independent element of decor or in combination with other curtains. They do not require careful personal care. It is enough to wipe them with soapy water using a soft washcloth.

Curtains on grommets

Eyelets are metal or wooden rings that can be either pressed into the fabric itself or placed on the outside of the curtains. The main advantage of such curtains is that they can easily move in different directions.

This is very convenient for the bedroom, where it is necessary to regulate the flow of daylight into the room. A cozy atmosphere is set by wooden eyelets on wooden cornice. The fabric is quite thick for these curtains. It does not gather into folds, but hangs down evenly and beautifully. The pattern on such curtains is also varied.

Combined

Such curtains perfectly serve as an independent bedroom decor. In this case, it is necessary to correctly combine the texture and color scheme. Mostly shades of the same color are used. Another option is to combine with neutral color: white, pastel colors, sand. For more extravagant people, you can play with contrasts. Then such curtains will attract all attention to themselves.

Short

They are gaining more and more popularity. The main advantages of such curtains. the length reaches the window sill, thereby freeing the radiators during the heating season. This makes it easier for heat to enter the room.

short curtains easier to wash and no need to suffer when ironing. Ideal for curtains if the bedroom has a balcony. Short curtains are most often used in country or Provence style. It is better to choose curtains with a printed pattern, which will better protect from sunlight.

Blinds

Modern design blinds will perfectly decorate any bedroom. In addition, they have significant advantages over fabric curtains. Do not require washing. Simply wipe with a damp sponge.

You can smoothly adjust the passage of sunlight into the bedroom. Do not fade in the sun. They keep the heat in the room. Protect from the penetration of noise from the street.

Tulle

Gives the bedroom airiness and comfort. Due to its transparency, it makes the room visually larger in area. As a general rule, the length of the tulle should be two to three times the length of the cornice. This will create a beautiful drapery.

However, do not pleat too often if the tulle is embroidered or printed. Most often, the material for tulle is organza, viscose, veil. This type of tulle, such as kisei, is beginning to enjoy increasing popularity.

The combination of curtains with other interior items

A well-chosen version of the curtains should be in harmony with other details of the bedroom interior. Otherwise, there will be an imbalance.

It is recommended that the curtains and bedspread be made from the same type of fabric and also match the rest of the room's design. The fabric should be thick enough so that in the evening it is not visible from the street to the entire environment in the room.

A very strong effect is obtained if the curtains have one ornament, and the bedspread repeats the shade of the pattern. This principle also works vice versa.

As for the combination of curtains with wallpaper, the situation here is a little more complicated.

Here are a few rules of harmony:

  • It is important that one element is lighter or darker than the other. However, this transition should be smooth.
  • One color scheme is allowed, but a different ornament or pattern.
  • The color is the same, the texture is the opposite: matte curtains, but glossy wallpaper.

It is also possible to combine curtains with furniture upholstery. This is an easy combination. It is enough to choose a fabric texture for one thing, and make all other elements from the same fabric.

In addition to color, you can make the same pattern. And with a strong desire, you can combine both color scheme, so is the drawing. However, you should be careful not to overdo it. Then the interior will look too heavy and uncomfortable.

Color

shades of brown or beige colour create a cozy atmosphere. This color is very often used in bedroom decor. Brown shades go well with other colors: blue, green or gold. Besides, Brown color visually enlarges the room. Great option for a small bedroom. Causes a feeling of calmness and security. The color looks elegant and expensive.

Green color associated with harmony. A bedroom with such curtains is filled with peace. Looking at this color, the eyes rest. Shades of green will perfectly fit into any interior style.

purple shades in combination with green and gold colors create a magical atmosphere in the bedroom. Curtains of this color rarely find their connoisseur.

Pink color acts as a stimulus. Bright colors are not recommended to hang in the bedroom - a place of rest and tranquility. However, if you choose combined option, like light-colored tulles, and curtains with bright pink tint the room will appear richly decorated.

black curtains can create the illusion of darkness and gloom. With the right combination of this color with other shades, the bedroom will take on a very elegant look. The room must have good lighting.

Black color is not the best option for a children's bedroom or kitchen.

shades of blue Colors give the room austerity. It is best to dilute this color with golden or white.

Orange or yellow brings joy. Such curtains are suitable for a child's room.

What material to choose

The material of curtains for the bedroom is very important. It depends on how the curtains will look and whether they will form folds. Depending on the style of the interior, the material of the curtains can be chosen both airy and more dense.

You should also correctly combine the fabric when combining several types of curtains. All materials can be divided into two types: natural and synthetic.

Natural fabrics are primarily linen, cotton. Linen curtains do not fade in the sun for a long time and do not shrink when washed. The main disadvantage is that they wrinkle very easily.

Cotton material will fade in sunlight. Therefore, its composition includes polyester. Silk is also a natural material. To prevent such curtains from fading too quickly, they are supplemented with a synthetic lining. Silk curtains look expensive in any interior.

Synthetic material used more often for curtains. The main type of fabric is viscose. It allows you to make various folds that give airiness to the interior. These curtains look great classical style.

Ideal for combining several types of curtains. Synthetic curtains are of good quality, while the price for them is less than for natural materials.

Modern curtains in bedroom design

To date, varieties of the following types of curtains are very popular:

London. When such curtains are raised, a beautiful fold forms in the middle, and bows on the sides. This season's trend is a Scottish plaid with a floral pattern.

French. This type of curtain is made from silk or organza. They have beautiful folds. The predominant style of application is baroque.

Roman. Great option for small bedrooms. The length to the window sill allows you to use the space for additional storage space.

Curtains for a small bedroom

Not everyone can boast of a large bedroom area. Therefore, it is very important to create an atmosphere of lightness in such a room. Plain curtains will look harmonious in a small bedroom. Drawing or embroidery is not welcome on them. It is also best to avoid voluminous folds. They visually reduce the room. It is best to choose curtains with horizontal stripes.

Curtains for a bedroom for a teenager

Children's room should be cozy and comfortable. Curtain material should be light and easy to care for. It is also better to refuse synthetic fabrics. They often accumulate dust, which can cause allergies.

All colors should be in harmony with each other and not be flashy, as this can cause excitement and aggression in a teenager. If the window is located on the sunny side, it is necessary to protect the room as much as possible from overheating and bright light.

Most often in modern design for a teenager's room, Roman or roller blinds are used. They easily control the flow of daylight into the bedroom. At the same time, they require a minimum of personal care.

DIY bedroom curtain ideas should match the style of the entire room. This, along with all other elements, is an important detail of the interior.

So, for classics, it is appropriate to use classic complex curtains with drapery or lambrequin. For those who adhere fashion trends, you can take a combination consisting of Roman and roller blind, blinds and curtains.

  1. a few photo examples to determine the direction;
  2. wish;
  3. patience and perseverance;

With one-sided folds, it is equal to 3, then an allowance of 6 cm is added to this number, which is necessary for processing seams and shrinkage of the material.
The shape of the bottom of the lambrequin can be different:

  • Under the fold.
  • With oblique trim.

  • 1.3 cm recedes from the outer edge of the part, a hem line is outlined. For this, a ruler and a pencil are used.
  • Similar lines are drawn along the sides of the part, at the same distance of 1.3 cm from the edge.
  • The inner edge of the product is bent by 6 mm.
  • The distance of the product between the side hem is measured. The resulting value is divided into an even number of sections. The width of the elements will also depend on the width: the wider the sections, the larger the teeth will be.
  • The boundaries of the sections are marked with points along the pencil line of the outer hem.
  • When decorating a scalloped frill on the top of the curtain, the number of teeth should be a multiple of the number of loops or rings used to attach the curtain to the cornice.
  • Another line is applied to the part, parallel to the line of the outer hem. Between these lines there should be a distance equal to the height of the teeth, to decorate the frill.
  • Points are placed for the teeth on the second line.
  • Points located on opposite lines are connected, while not going beyond the intended boundaries.
  • 1.3 cm of stock is added to the edges of the teeth applied to the fabric.
  • A frill is attached to the curtain, for decorating with cloves, cuts are combined and chopped off with pins.
  • When decorating the upper part of the curtain, its side allowances are doubled.
  • Together with the edge of the curtain is cut out with cloves decorative detail, while the scissors move along the zigzag line previously marked with a pencil.
  • The serrated edge of the frill is hemmed. All allowances are tucked and stitched, the seams are ironed.

  • The frill is ironed on the front side.
  • The frill is again applied to the curtain, the details are chipped off with pins and attached.

  • Rake, shorter than curtains.
  • Finishing tape - Velcro and braid.
  • Carnations are small.
  • Rings plastic or metal with a diameter of 12 mm.
  • Nylon cord, the length of which is equal to one curtain width and two lengths.

To start making Roman blinds, the width of the window is measured, the future width of the curtain. 5 cm is added to the resulting value.
The length includes the height of the window plus the 12 cm allowance required at the bottom edge for double hem and the seam at the top. On the wrong side, on the ironed fabric, hem lines, lines where the folds are located and points where the rings are sewn are marked.
From the line of the lower edge for the first fold, you need to set aside a distance equal to half the width of the fold. All the following lines are located at the same distance, it is equal to the width of the fold.

Now most housewives prefer to order the manufacture of curtains in workshops. This is because many people find sewing curtains too complicated. In fact, sewing curtains for the bedroom with your own hands is quite simple. And such work will not take much time.

Pattern for sewing curtains.

Usually, it takes only 2-3 free evenings and minimal cutting skills to make multi-layer curtains decorated with a lambrequin or a frill. If you know some of the nuances and rules of tailoring, then even a novice craftswoman will cope with such work.

DIY bedroom making

Tailoring of any product, including curtains for the bedroom, begins with the choice of model. It should be borne in mind that curtains serve not only as window decor. They also bring coziness and comfort to the room. Therefore, you should not stop your choice on too fanciful ideas. Pay attention to fairly simple and concise models.

Scheme of the Austrian curtains.

In addition, it is not at all difficult to make such curtains for the bedroom with your own hands. Before sewing curtains, carefully consider their appearance. You must initially present the finished result.

Sewing curtains for the bedroom begins with taking the necessary measurements. You will need the following dimensions:

  1. The distance from the eaves to the floor.
  2. Cornice width.
  3. The width of the window opening, taking into account the section of the wall that will be covered with ready-made curtains.

The dimensions of the curtains are calculated based on these parameters. For the formation of beautiful folds, the width of the curtain panel is increased by 2.5-3 times. If you want to sew curtains consisting of 1 solid panel, then its width should be equal to the length of the cornice with a supply of material for folds. For separate panels, this parameter is divided by 2.

Roman blind design.

This rule is also true for decorative details, such as frills or lambrequins. Do not be afraid to take on the tailoring of such seemingly complex details. After all, you can not only sew curtains with your own hands, but also decorate them so that you get a truly exclusive model.

You can change these dimensions as you wish. All details in the proposed example are cut in the form of simple rectangles. Accordingly, sewing curtains for your bedroom will not be difficult.

Sewing curtains for the bedroom

Before sewing curtains according to the proposed example, it is not necessary to make patterns. All necessary sizes and marks are applied directly to the fabric. This is best done from the wrong side with a piece of chalk or dry soap.

In order to sew curtains, you will need the following tools:

  • centimeter tape or construction tape;
  • tailor's scissors;
  • pins;
  • sewing machine;
  • threads and needles for basting.

When marking curtains, do not forget about hem allowances. Usually, 1.5-2 cm are left on the sides, 2-3 cm from the top edge, and 5-7 cm from the bottom. The same allowances are left for processing frills.

After the curtain is marked, it must be cut. It is wiser to cut all the elements at the same time. So you can be sure that there is enough material for the entire selected design.

Now you need to sew curtains. First, the side cuts are processed. They are tucked, ironed, cleaved with pins and machine stitched to the edge, 1.5-2 mm from the fold of the fabric. Remember that the thinner the material, the shorter the stitch should be.

After the side edges are stitched, you can do the hem of the top. Usually it is made out in the same way as the side sections. Only the hem allowance should be wider. If the curtain fabric is thin, then the allowance must be duplicated with an adhesive pad. Lastly, the bottom of the product is processed.

How to sew curtains from thin fabric

Table of volumes of fabric for sewing curtains.

As a rule, it is not difficult to make curtains with your own hands from dense fabrics. It is more difficult to process thin materials. But it is these curtains for the bedroom that look especially impressive. But even with this task you can easily cope if you know some tricks.

After measuring the required height and width of the sheer curtain, carefully cut off the top edge of the fabric, aligning it. Bend the material to a width of 1.7-2.5 cm. It is this hem that will hide small stitching errors. If you decide to sew curtains for the bedroom from a material containing a high percentage of artificial fibers, then the hem should not only be ironed, but also swept away. Otherwise, the fabric will slip, and the seam will turn out uneven.

Make sure that the tension of the top and bottom thread was the same. Otherwise, the tulle may go in waves. The stitch should be medium. Set the regulator to 2.5-3.

Spread the curtain on the floor, preferably on a carpet, aligning the bottom edge of the fabric with the edge of the carpet. Smooth out the material and measure the desired height in several places. Mark it with pins and baste the fold of the top edge. Next, the curtains for the bedroom need to be checked for the degree of sagging. To do this, the canvas is fixed on the wall or hung on the cornice, forming a drapery (giving the curtain the look that it will take in the end). Make the necessary changes to the hem of the top. Only then tuck it completely, iron, baste and delay.

If you sew curtains with your own hands, and do not buy ready-made ones, then do not be too lazy to do all the work as accurately as possible.

Only then can you be sure of a perfect result.

Making fasteners in the form of a loop

Scheme of wide fabric loops.

Before sewing curtains, think about how they are attached to the eaves. You can use curtain tape, clips or eyelets for this. But hinged curtains look no less impressive. In addition to attractive appearance they have other benefits as well. For example, such fasteners do not make noise when the curtains are pushed or pulled apart, which is important for a bedroom.

For the manufacture of loops, trimmings left over from cutting the main curtains are useful. The blank for the loop should be equal to the diameter of the cornice with the addition of 5-7 cm allowance for a loose fit. Also, don't forget about the hem allowance. The width of the loop depends entirely on your desire. Usually, when folded, this parameter is 4-6 cm. The loops can be made so that both of their edges are sewn to the curtain. Or one edge can be left open by processing a loop on it. Then the curtain can be easily removed from the eaves.

When cutting out the curtains for the bedroom, make blanks for the loops. They are sewn on after the top edge of the curtain is completely finished. If you want to hang multilayer curtains on hinges, then all the elements must be swept together and the top cut must be processed as a single piece. If you have chosen a thin fabric for curtains in the bedroom, then this will not be difficult. Dense material can be edged with an oblique trim.

Production of pickup for curtains

Pattern of pickups for curtains.

Tieback is a small but important element in the design of curtains. He not only holds the curtains in open form, but also forms them with a beautiful drapery. You can not sew this part, but buy it ready-made. For example, curtains for the bedroom, made in a classic style, are ideally combined with tiebacks in the form of bronze or silver hooks mounted directly into the wall.

Pickups can be fantasy. Details collected from beads, woven from braid or made from lace look very interesting. With curtains sewn from coarse linen, rope tiebacks are perfectly combined. They are an ordinary piece of thick cotton rope, decorated at the ends with an intricate knot or tassels. But if you decide to sew the curtains with your own hands, then it is more logical to make the tiebacks yourself.

If you do not know how to sew evenly, use an iron to iron the future stitching of the seams. This will make the edges even, and give you the confidence to work with your own hands.

If you wish to include a decorated ribbon in the curtain model, it is recommended to take 2 strips 18 cm long, where 2-3 cm will go to the reserve. Fold the ribbons in half and sew with a grip. After that, prepare a strip 20-22 cm long and, having folded it two in length, stitch and turn it inside out. The finished material must be cut into 3 equal parts.

The edges of the tape, which remained unprocessed, need to be bent with your own hands and stitched to the canvas with loops: 1 in the center and 2 along the edges. We pass the decorative strip through the loops, and sew the ends to the side edges of the product. When everything is almost ready, it is necessary to assemble the curtains together and use the grip to make a drapery. The grip, in turn, should be attached with a hook or other auxiliary element to the wall.

Ready-made curtains for the bedroom, sewn on your own, should be carefully ironed with a steam iron to smooth out all the seams. Then they can be hung on pre-fixed cornices with loops.

If you have a desire to contribute to the creation of style and comfort in the bedroom and try something new in life, then you should not be afraid of time-consuming and painstaking work. At first it may seem that it is impossible to sew curtains on your own and without experience, for example, as in the photo, but as soon as you start, this creative process will captivate you with incredible force. As a result, you will not only have a good time, but will also proudly admire your work for a long time to come.

How to sew curtains with your own hands in the bedroom is of interest to many owners of apartments and houses. If the first products were made from animal skins and closed the exit from a hut or cave, now there is a huge variety of such elements for interior decoration.
How to make curtains can be seen in the video. This article offers a few suggestions for getting the job done.

With the independent manufacture of beautiful products, the main advantage will be the lower price of curtains.
To start making them, you need:

  • Find models and attractive design. Each room of the apartment has its own version of their design and tailoring.
  • The texture and color of the fabric should be chosen in accordance with the overall color of the interior of the room for which it is intended.
  • Shape is taken into account and general form curtains (see), which can significantly affect the design of the room.

Tip: When choosing products, you need to take into account all the recommendations and use them rationally.

  • You should not take a lot of bright colors, sew extra details to the curtains that will create additional volume.
  • Bulky curtains look especially ugly in a small room. Here it is enough to come up with something unusual to distinguish them from the general interior of the room, but so that it is an addition to it.

Tip: For a kitchen, living room or bedroom that has classic interior, only curtains made in a classic style are suitable. Their popularity is the greatest and they are used more often than others.

What are classic curtains

There is no strict definition of curtains. These are most often straight curtains made from traditional fabrics with the addition of tulle fabric with light curtains, as shown in the photo.

This is the most simple model, which any hostess can sew. In addition to the classic models of curtains, lambrequins are used to cover their upper part.
You can sew lambrequins different ways. Straight with pleats are one of the most popular types. Recently, lambrequins with an unusual lower part of the cut have gained popularity.

Tip: It is better to start sewing curtains with lighter models, and then gradually move on to more complex designs that, at first glance, even seem impossible. It is especially important to choose the right fabric.

How to choose the material for sewing curtains

When choosing a fabric for sewing curtains, everyone thinks differently:

  • Most often, textiles are taken with patterns, gold or dark green. The latter must be chosen so that it is combined with the color of the bedspread and the color scheme of the room where they will be used.
If a beautiful fabric for curtains is selected, then the products will turn out to be excellent, it will be hard to take your eyes off them.
If there are bright saturated colors and various ornaments, large patterns in the decor of the room, you need to take a plain, discreet fabric for curtains. With a calm interior of the room, and decorating the walls with inconspicuous patterns, you can use a fabric of bright color.
In this case, beautiful and original curtains will perfectly complement the room and attract the attention of the entire decor of the room.
  • Curtains made by yourself should not merge with the environment that surrounds them, which requires very careful consideration of this issue.
  • You should not use satin or silk fabric for sewing curtains. It is better to use velvet, velor, cotton, linen, organza, jacquard and brocade, taking into account the curtain fabric.

How to make straight curtains

Direct products can diversify ideas with their own hands.
To many, this option seems not quite beautiful and even boring. But it is not so.
Direct elements can be constantly modified:

  • With a specially sewn braid, you can collect the top of the curtains. The shape of the folds on the main fabric depends on its type.
To select a braid, you need to look at the catalog of finished products to imagine how they will look with the selected part.
  • First you need to determine which is better to take the finish on the curtains. It can be brushes, ruffles.
  • Then additional decorative elements are selected.
  • You can sew classic straight curtains yourself without a pattern. In this case, it is enough to take measurements from the window and, depending on its length and width, calculate the amount of fabric for sewing.

Tip: If the selected fabric has a pattern, you will need a little more of it so that the patterns look symmetrical on the window.

  • When choosing a material, you need to remember about the seam allowances at the top and bottom of the canvas. Therefore, its length should be slightly larger than the dimensions of the window.

How to sew curtains

Instructions for sewing curtains includes:

  • The amount of fabric needed is determined. For this, dimensions are taken from the cornice, by measuring its length, and the length of the product from the cornice to the floor is determined.
In the manufacture long curtains it is necessary to add another ten centimeters to this size. This will be the seam allowance for the top and bottom.
The width is chosen depending on the taste of the owner of the room. For curtains with many folds, the length of the cornice is multiplied by three, for not too lush products, multiplied by two.
  • If there is a large pattern on the fabric for curtains, it must be bought with a margin to match the pattern. Then the curtain will look like a solid canvas.

Tip: To get a solid pattern, you need to fold the canvases with the outer side to each other and sew.

  • On the sides, the edges are folded inward twice: by 1 cm, then by 2 cm and sewn on a typewriter.
  • The lower part is also folded inward twice: the first hem is 3 cm, the second 5 cm and is also sewn.
  • The folded edges iron well.
  • The top edge is processed as follows:
  1. bends three centimeters inward;
  2. from the side of the inside, a braid is pinned with pins;
  3. one centimeter recedes from the top fold.

Tip: The braid must be purchased six centimeters longer than the curtain width in order to provide three centimeters of allowances on both sides.

  • From the wrong side of the braid, the ends of the cords are pulled out and tied together. Then you need to tuck the left allowance of braid inward.
  • The same is done with the second edge of the braid on the other side. But the ends of the cords are not tied. This is the outer edge.
  • The braid is attached along its edges - upper and lower. The folded edges of the braid also need to be sewn.
  • On the outer edge, the ends of the laces should not be sewn.
  • After that, the folds of the curtain are formed. To do this, the curtain is pulled together with laces to the desired length, then the laces are tied.
  • There are loops on the curtain band. Hooks can be inserted into them at approximately the same distance between them. The number of hooks should correspond to the number of folds on the curtain.

Tip: When making curtains, you should not rush and sew the seams immediately on the typewriter, if you make a mistake, when steaming the seams, visible marks may remain on the fabric, which will not be very beautiful.

How to sew a curtain "with teeth"

Curtains decorated with cloves look great in the kitchen, bedroom and children's room.
For self-production you will need:

  • Decorative fabric, pins, threads for sewing to match the fabric.
  • Sewing machine.
  • Scissors, pencil, ruler.
  • Colorless nail polish.

Tip: Before starting work, you should find the right patterns for curtains for the bedroom with your own hands, which will facilitate further operations.

  • A piece of fabric is taken, from which a jagged border will be sewn, according to the size of the curtain and its edges are processed.

  • Together with the edge of the curtain, a decorative detail is cut out with teeth, while the scissors move along the zigzag line previously marked with a pencil.
  • The serrated edge of the frill is hemmed. All allowances are tucked and stitched, the seams are ironed.

Tip: To prevent the threads from unraveling, you need to carefully coat the figured section with a colorless nail polish and let it dry.

  • The frill is ironed on the front side.
  • The frill is again applied to the curtain, the details are chipped off with pins and attached.
  • The serrated edges are sewn by hand.
  • The curtain is finally stitched together.

A frill cut with cloves can decorate the curtain along the inner or upper edge. Beautifully selected curtains in the bedroom will decorate it and give more comfort.
