Making a metal chair

How to make a metal chair yourself, at home? A chair is made of duralumin or steel pipes with a diameter of 18-22 mm. In the case of using steel pipes for the frame of the chair, the rear legs (detail D) are not necessary. frame metal chair can be assembled from two halves by connecting them together using wooden or metal bushings (bougie). The bushings must fit tightly into the connected ends of the tubes. They are fixed with through metal studs with a diameter of 2-3 mm.

Some difficulty is the bending of the frame of a metal chair. Bending is most conveniently carried out using the device described in and the plaza.

On a sheet of plywood in cells, redraw the shape of the chair in two projections (side and top). It will be plaz. Before flexible pipes don't forget to fill them tightly with sand.

By bending the tube, adjust it along the contour on the plaza. Only in this case you will be able to quite simply and easily achieve the desired shape of the chair frame. Reinforce the frame with two crossbars and rear legs from the same pipes. The crossbars and legs are fastened with screws using wooden plugs.

Sew the seat and back of the metal chair from durable upholstery fabric. The back is sewn in the form of an easily removable cover. At the seat, on four sides, they are stitched with a double seam of support. Before final assembly of a metal chair, the seat is put on the frame, and only after that the details of the chair are finally fixed.

The profile pipe is a very multifunctional material. In addition to its widest use in industry, the pipe finds active use in private construction. When erecting small forms, craftsmen prefer material with a smaller section than in industrial use. The most popular are pipes with a cross section of 100x50 and 80x80 mm, from which frames are constructed for houses, outbuildings, gazebos and sheds. Erected from profile pipes also fences with gates. In addition, recently, furniture made from a profile pipe, which is made from thin-walled elements with a section of 40x25 or 20x20 mm, has been very popular. How to make a table and a chair from a profile pipe, we will tell in our today's article.

It is not surprising that profile pipes are so actively used for the construction of country and home furniture - they have a number of undeniable and significant advantages.

  • Thin-walled elements weigh a little, so the final design has a slight weight.
  • Thanks to the stiffening ribs, a table made of a profile pipe (or other piece of furniture) will be very durable and will withstand fairly high loads. You can even make a workbench from profile pipes - and it will transfer almost any work for which you will use it.
  • The masters also consider the geometric shapes of profile pipes to be very successful: thanks to the rectangular or square section, they are compact for storage and transport, easy to mount and provide an optimal connection to the planes. Which, we note, guarantees high stability of the structure as a whole.
  • The relatively low cost of the material cannot but rejoice, which makes it possible to save on details without losing quality and aesthetics.
  • Another attractive side of chairs and tables from a profile pipe is the ease of installation. Elements can be connected both with bolts and by welding. And for the last option welding machine you don’t have to buy or rent: household equipment is enough to process a profile pipe.
  • Wear resistance and indifference to aggressive influences (temperature changes, atmospheric precipitation, etc.) allows the use of furniture made of profile pipes in the open air.
  • Products made from this material are durable. Even without additional treatments, the frame will serve for several decades. And if you protect it from corrosion - then almost forever.

The only disadvantage of a profile pipe is the difficulty in obtaining a bend. However, this problem can also be solved: in the absence of a machine, the element can be given a given curvature by filling with sand during bending.

Good start: the simplest table

Do-it-yourself table made of profile pipes

If you have never taken on the manufacture of furniture from this material, we advise you to start with the most primitive option. It may not be very aesthetic, but you can practice on it at work, and then use it as a workbench or give it to your schoolboy son as a desk - teenagers simply “burn” furniture, and even a hyperactive child will not be able to break such a table.

To cut the elements you need a grinder

Action algorithm

  • Creation of a drawing indicating the dimensions of all elements of the planned product.
  • Cutting profile pipes into parts. In the simplest version, four legs-racks, two short struts and one long one are required. If you don’t like the “extra” elements under the countertop, you can make two short and two long parts from the corner, which will be fixed directly to the surface.
  • The frame is welded or bolted with a mandatory check for right angles between the elements. If you prefer the “invisible” option, the rectangle on which the tabletop will be laid must be additionally reinforced with corners.
  • The tabletop can be cut out of a fiberboard, you can - from thick plastic, you can take it ready-made by removing it from the old table.

In a similar way, you can make any other product. The only thing that is required at the initial stage of furniture manufacturing is detailed drawing. All parts in it can initially be wooden, you simply replace them with elements from profile pipes.

For masters who have reached perfection: a loft-style table

With a lack of space in the room or unwillingness to clutter up the space in the room, we suggest building a two-legged table “fastened” to the wall. The manufacturing principle is the same, with some deviations from the topic.

  • Two legs are prepared, spacer structures can be completely abandoned.
  • The other two posts are replaced by sturdy brackets screwed directly into the wall.
  • All elements are checked for perpendicularity.
  • A tabletop is installed on the resulting frame.

advice from experienced craftsmen: if you intend to use furniture made of profile pipes in the house, buy nozzles for legs in a hardware store so as not to spoil the flooring.

Original solution: wall table

seats

A table without seats is not very functional. The simplest of them is a stool. In principle, its production is basically consistent with the already described algorithm. However, for greater strength and ease of use, some subtleties must be taken into account when drawing up a drawing.

  • The frame under the seat must be sure that the stool can withstand the weight of a person of any size.
  • If the stool is high, like a bar stool, the racks must necessarily have a spacer frame. It can be welded either at a distance of 5-10 cm from the floor, or so that the seated person can put his legs on the crossbar.

When you master the manufacture of a stool, you can move on to the production of chairs and even armchairs. The base remains the same (if you made a stool with straight legs). To get a chair, it is enough just to cut off one of the pairs of racks of greater length and take care of the crossbars between the backrest supports.

Making chairs will require more complex calculations. All legs will have to be lengthened, but one pair is larger, the other, which will serve as racks for armrests, is smaller.

Bar stools must have an additional frame at the bottom

With experience, the master is able to make a solid dining set

garden set

For suburban area, if you spend a lot of time on it and like to have tea in the fresh air, a table with a bench made of profile pipes with your own hands would be a good solution. The set can be placed both directly in the garden and in the yard next to the house.

To make such a set, you will need:

  • Pipes with a section of 40 × 25 mm with a wall thickness of 2 mm with a total length of 370 cm;
  • Pipes with a section of 25 × 25 mm with a wall thickness of 2 mm with a total length of 570 cm;
  • Board 25x80 mm in the amount of 11 pieces, if the length of the element is 124 cm;
  • Self-tapping screws in the amount of 50 pcs. (we take with a margin).

Of the tools, a grinder, a drill with drills for metal, a welding machine, and a tape measure will come in handy. Step by step production is as follows.

  1. Pipes with a cross section of 45x25 are cut into the required number of elements.
  2. From the parts by welding, 2 brackets are made, from which a folding table should be made.
  3. The ends are welded with steel plugs using the mentioned apparatus.
  4. At the next stage, careful measurements are taken and holes are drilled in the right places.
  5. In accordance with the scheme, both types of profile pipes are cut - blanks are made under the bench.
  6. Frame parts are welded.
  7. The spacer is mounted.
  8. Pipes with a cross section of 25x25 mm are cut; of them is formed folding leg. It is done with the letter P.
  9. The seams of the frame are cleaned and treated with an anti-corrosion compound.
  10. At the same time, boards are sawn into elements of the appropriate length. They are sanded to smoothness and impregnated with antiseptics.
  11. Finished elements of the tabletop are attached to the frame.

Lastly, the stops with the axes are fixed and the pipe ends are expanded.

Plastic pipe furniture

Also a very popular idea: such tables with chairs are very cheap, and they move without difficulty at all, since they are made of extremely light material. Craftsmen from plastic pipes are able to assemble anything from a shelving unit to a two-story bed. But it is recommended to start with something extremely simple. For example, from an elementary stool, consisting of a basic frame with legs and a seat. If desired, you can turn it into a chair by lengthening one pair of racks, as we did when making furniture from profile pipes.

Stages of work:

  • cutting plastic pipes according to the drawing;
  • frame assembly;
  • installation of legs;
  • installation on the seat frame. The basis is taken thick plywood, from which you need to cut a blank of the appropriate size. The "stand" is fastened with self-tapping screws;
  • welding of legs with a frame.

The final touch is to check the design for strength. If desired, a pillow is attached to the seat for the comfort of spending time on the chair.

Do-it-yourself furniture made of plastic pipes can be built collapsible using fittings. This option is especially successful for country use: when cleaning for storage, tables, chairs and other furniture will take up a minimum of space.

Having mastered the basic techniques of working with plastic pipes, you can make real masterpieces.

A rocking chair will require a high degree of craftsmanship

Wood furniture has always been popular. But there are times when its use is inappropriate. The metal is strong and durable, and the manufactured furniture is stylish and elegant. Working with this material is not very difficult. It is only necessary to have experience with welding and the required materials.

How to make metal chairs yourself

To assemble metal chairs, you will need a pipe bender. It can be assembled by hand. Why fix two bars on the workbench in the workshop. Between them you need to leave a gap where it is inserted metal pipe. Fill it with sand, insert wooden plugs at the ends and then you can give the blanks the desired shape.

Attention! Before you start work, you need to draw up a detailed drawing. Draw the required chair model. Specify the dimensions of all furniture items. According to the drawing, make a full-size stencil from a plywood sheet, according to which you can later verify the accuracy of the workpieces made.

Which metal to choose

Metal is the most durable material for making furniture. When properly processed, it is not afraid of moisture or moisture. sun rays. There are 3 types of metals suitable for making chairs:

Necessary tools and materials

For work you will need:

Metal chairs: step by step

Today in interiors there are usually high chairs on an iron frame, which are called bar stools. Products can also be made with a small back and armrests.

Attention! For the manufacture of this furniture, steel tubes with a cross section of about 22-27 mm will be required. Also a welding machine, metal shears, a tape measure and a pencil, a grinder or sandpaper. To cover the chair you will need paint or varnish.

Work is done in the following order:

The seat of the chair is prepared. Next, start making the legs. Why from square profile with a section of 4 cm, you need to cut 4 parts of the required size. The height of the product must be determined independently, taking into account the needs. The seat must be approximately 45 cm below the level of the table.

Prepared legs are not strongly welded to the body. Evaluate whether the chair is level, only then complete the welding. This chair needs a footrest. Mark the area where the substrate will be located. The optimal distance is approximately 32-37 cm from the seat. Cut pieces of the required size from a steel pipe, install between the legs, and secure with a welding machine.

Metal chairs fit perfectly into the interior of any room and can be used as garden furniture. Metal only seems “heavy”, but designers prove the opposite with their examples of work. And if this is not the only piece of furniture, but several, made in a common style and located in the same composition, then this will be a real decoration of any room.

The author at work left a lot of steel square pipes, which he decided to appropriate. From such a beautiful material, it was decided to make a chair. The author is working with metal for the first time, so this article can help other DIYers who are not yet experienced in this type of activity.

Materials and tools for homemade:

Materials:
- square steel pipes;
- a wooden panel or other material for the manufacture of the seat itself;
- plastic plugs for square pipes;
- metal primer and paint;
- putty for metal;
- beeswax;
- glue for wood;
- screws.

Tools:
- Bulgarian;
- welding;
- drill;
- hammer;
- screwdriver;
- sandpaper (80, 100, 150, 240 grit);
- clamps;
- putty knife;
- disk;
- if you make the chair round, it is advisable to have a jigsaw.

Chair making process:

Step one. We cut blanks
First you have to decide on the size of the chair, make it according to your height so that it is comfortable to sit. After that, you can cut the blanks. You should have four long legs, four long bottom struts, and four short struts at the top. The most difficult thing in this business is to correctly mark and cut off the corners. The author worked hand tools, so he didn’t get it very accurately, but this is not critical, because then the welds are still cleaned, processed with putty and painted, they are not visible.

Also at this stage, clean the pipes of rust and other contaminants.
If you look from another angle, the chair is obtained from four figures in the form of "A".

Step two. We weld blanks
Next, we take welding and weld the workpieces. In this case, it is important not to rush so that the chair is even. Do not try too hard on the quality of the welds, because they will still be processed. The main thing is that everything is strong.

When everything is welded, take the grinder and clean the welds. They need to be made smooth, aligned flush with the pipes. This can also be done manually using files and sandpaper, though it will be more difficult.

At the end of this step, the author drills mounting holes in the top four pipes. The author chose a hole diameter of 4 mm to securely fasten the seat with screws. There are 8 screws in total, two in each pipe. Although in principle, four is enough.

Step three. Putty welds
To hide shells after welding and other defects, the author uses putty. Apply a small amount to the joints and let the putty dry completely. Finally, sand these areas well with sandpaper. Now there is a feeling that all these pipes have always been a solid structure.

Step four. Finishing the legs
Even with fairly accurate calculations, it can turn out that the chair on a flat surface will swing due to the different lengths of the legs. This is not scary, because we have the task of aligning the legs so that the chair is level. We mark, cut off, process the edges.

Step five. Painting
Before painting, thoroughly clean the metal, removing all rust and dirt. It is also advisable to take a rag, wet it with acetone and wipe the pipes if there are traces of oil on them. Now the metal can be painted, instead of paint, you can use a primer. The author decided to paint his chair black. To make the chair sparkle, the author varnished the primer.

Step six. seat manufacturing
To make the seat, the author bought a pine wood panel. It was cut into squares measuring 30x30 cm. To make the seat durable, the author glues these two sheets with wood glue, clamping them well with clamps.

When the glue is completely dry, you can cut out the circle. Draw it on the workpiece, and then cut it out with a jigsaw, well, or with a manual jigsaw.

Next comes the grinding stage. First use coarse sandpaper, and then finer and finer. Your task will be to make the tree as smooth as possible.

At the end, the wood will be impregnated to protect it from moisture, moreover, this way the tree will be more beautiful. The author initially made the wrong decision and impregnated the tree with mineral oil. The thing is, this oil never dries out. In this regard, a layer of beeswax was also applied on top to create a film that does not allow mineral oil to pass through.

To do the right thing, use linseed oil, and preferably boiled (natural drying oil). Also, some people mix linseed oil with beeswax and saturate the wood as well. Buff the seat with a cloth to make it shine.

Step seven. Chair assembly
Finally, you just need to attach the wooden seat to the steel frame. Here you will need self-tapping screws or screws. If you use screws, drill holes in the wood for them.

Chairs and stools on a metal frame began to be produced at the beginning of the 20th century and immediately won the sympathy of consumers. The base of the metal is able to withstand a lot of weight, which makes such furniture practical and durable. In addition to the frame, chairs, as you know, have a seat and a back. Today, there are many options for their execution, depending on the purpose of the premises in which they will be located.

Furniture on a metal frame for the kitchen is made of aluminum or steel pipe, which can be given the most various forms depending on the imagination of the designer. The final product is covered with several layers of chrome or paint. Often chrome legs are decorated with additional decor elements from smaller diameter tubes.

The mysterious sheen of metal adds elegance and solemnity to the interior of the room. It works great in combination with others. finishing materials. There are models of frame chairs, where the upholstery is used only for the seats, and there are options where the frame is completely hidden under a decorative cover.

Manufacturing features

The service life of a metal product depends on the method and material of manufacture. Aluminum structures are considered more durable, so they cost more. Steel pipes with a diameter of 15-25 mm are more affordable and can be made with sharp corners or smooth lines.

There are two main ways of fastening the components of frame furniture:

  1. Welding The method is mainly used in mass production.
  2. Made. This method uses bolts, nuts and a pipe bender. With their help, craftsmen assemble chairs with their own hands.

Plastic

A variety of, sometimes even unexpected materials can be used as a finish for the seats and backs:

  • The combination of plastic seats and metal legs in furniture is the most practical and one of the most common options for the kitchen. These materials are easy to care for, are not afraid of moisture and high temperatures. Modern technologies allow you to give plastic the most unexpected bends and shapes. Pleased with the choice and color palette plastic seats. This a good option not only for a city apartment, but also for a summer cafe, as well as an open veranda country house. One type of plastic is polycarbonate. Products from it last years are becoming more and more popular. It is considered a more durable material than plastic. Chairs made of polycarbonate can withstand a person weighing about 200 kg.

Tree

  • Wooden backs and seats can be a single integral structure or two completely independent parts. They can be decorated with openwork carvings or simply varnished or painted. Italian products are especially appreciated. It is durable, non-toxic and adds comfort and warmth to the room. Wooden chairs go well with kitchen set the same texture.

Rattan

  • It is an environmentally friendly natural material. Such furniture does not require special care - it is enough to periodically remove dust from its elements with a damp cloth or vacuum cleaner. Rattan can withstand frost down to -35C, so these chairs can be safely left in summer country houses, on an uninsulated veranda and in other unheated rooms. Since rattan is not afraid of moisture, such furniture models are quite suitable for the kitchen. Given that the chairs are subjected to intense daily use, the service life of rattan products is at least 10 years.

Glass

  • For the production of furniture, not ordinary glass, which is found in daily use, is used, but a special material with increased strength. Such glass is difficult to break and even scratch, it can withstand heavy loads. If, nevertheless, the glass frame breaks, then it will be impossible to cut yourself on the fragments, because they do not have sharp edges. Such glass is used in the manufacture of automotive parts.

Leather and fabric

  • These materials are used for upholstery of chairs. Each of them is good in its own way. The seat, upholstered in fabric, is pleasant to touch with your hand. This texture is warm, does not slip and does not stick to the body. However, fabric is difficult to care for, especially since the kitchen is not the cleanest place in the house. Fabric upholstery, if these are not removable covers, should be cleaned with a steam cleaner or a simple vacuum cleaner in the absence of the first. To remove difficult stains, it is suggested to use a cleaning agent designed specifically for upholstered furniture or ordinary soapy water. Leather and its derivatives are more advantageous materials in terms of exploitation. It is moisture resistant and more durable than fabric.

Once or twice a year, for prevention, the surface of the chair should be treated with a special agent for leather products to renew the color and add gloss to it.

Folding models

  • Spare parts for them can be purchased or ordered separately. You can assemble such furniture with your own hands. The collapsible design is good for giving or a small kitchen. If there is no need, the chair can be disassembled and it will take up a minimum of space, and be reassembled by the arrival of guests.

stackable chairs

  • Such models have long been successfully used by eminent designers around the world. They stack on top of each other like a children's pyramid and save a lot of space. An example of stackable models can be seen in summer cafes.

Design variety

Kitchen chairs can be used both in the home kitchen and in places Catering. Depending on this, they are divided into several subgroups:

  • Dining. This type includes classic chairs with a back of standard height. It is believed that for a person of average height 167-173 cm will be optimal following sizes. The height from the highest point of the back to the floor should be 80-90 cm, of which 40-45 cm is the distance from the seat surface to the floor 40-45 cm, and the same is the height of the back itself. The most comfortable width of the back of the chair and its seat is approximately 43-45 cm.
  • Viennese. Their design is characterized by smooth lines, a rounded seat and high legs with a thin diameter. Despite the fact that the classic model of the Viennese chair has a wooden base, modern manufacturers offer metal versions of this design.
  • Bar chairs differ from dining options sizes. Their height is greater than the standard value and is selected individually, depending on the height of the bar itself.

There are several types of bar stools:

  • Stool. This option is uncomfortable and not intended for prolonged sitting due to the lack of back support, which you can lean back on.
  • Chair with back. At the same time, the height of the backrest can be different - from the most minimal, almost conditional, to high with a headrest.
  • Armchair. This model has a high back, and often even soft armrests, which provides him with the maximum level of comfort. This option, judging by the reviews, is most often chosen for home use.

Advantages

  • Durability and strength. The service life of such products is calculated in decades. And since they are able to withstand a large load, they are suitable for people with a problem weight.
  • If any of the components is out of order or you are simply tired of the shape or color of the chair, there is always possibility to replace seat and (or) back, which can also be done by hand. In this case, the metal base will remain the same, and you will get a completely new chair with minimal cost.
  • Folding models do not take up much space, and it is possible to use them in a small kitchen.
  • Variety of styles and colors. Depending on the finishing material, metal furniture can be used in different interiors: from modern to retro.
  • Practicality. Almost no maintenance is required for metal parts, especially if they are rigid structures without upholstery.
  • Wide range of prices. A variety of design and auxiliary materials allows you to choose chairs on a metal frame for any income. In addition, steel and aluminum are cheaper than wood.
  • Sturdy one-piece construction will not allow the product to loosen, and fastenings in the form of bolts can always be tightened.

To disadvantages of the products described can be attributed to their weight. Some models with a metal case are very heavy and difficult to move from place to place when cleaning.

The original colors are also not happy with the variety. But it can always be changed, and if you don't like the white metal legs, they can easily be repainted or decorated in some other way.
