    In the field of water treatment and purification, there is one very serious problem - any filter material periodically becomes clogged, which means that it needs to be replaced or cleaned (regenerated).

    In order to minimize cartridge or bulk material costs, self-cleaning water filters have been developed.

    Such systems are still able to purify the liquid only from mechanical particles. Individual industrial models may more regenerate the properties of bulk filter materials by washing them under pressure.

    This approach significantly increases the service life of the filling material and the operation of the filter as a whole.

    Types of self-cleaning filters

    At the moment, the assortment of most companies offering products for water treatment includes self-cleaning filters of the following types:

    1. With manual washing. Here, manufacturers assume under the “manual flushing method” both the physical removal of the filter element with its washing outside the housing, and the cleaning procedure without disassembling the housing, and sometimes even without stopping the water supply in the line (if the pressure for washing is sufficient to ensure that the surface of the filter element cleared).
    2. With semi-automatic flushing system. "Semi-automatic" here is to manually start the automatic cleaning process. The cleaning itself can proceed in different ways, depending on the type of filter element and technical solutions applied by the manufacturer.
    3. With automatic flush. The most advanced and as a result expensive solutions. Here, the cleaning process can be initiated without human intervention, for example, if a pollution sensor is triggered or a timer is simply triggered according to a predetermined schedule (schedule).

    The last two types (semi-automatic and automatic) self-cleaning filters are used most often in the main high-loaded water supply.

    These are productive water treatment and purification complexes, for example, for servicing large swimming pools, equipping a manufacturing enterprise, connecting entire cottage settlements to water supply, etc.

    Self-cleaning filters may differ in the material of the housing.

    They are made:

    1. Made of plastic (polypropylenes of high or low pressure);
    2. From metal (brass, bronze, steel, etc.).

    As a self-flushing element can be:

    1. Disc elements which, under pressure, form a monolithic porous structure;
    2. Mesh surface made of plastic or metal with a given cell size;
    3. Backfill material, which is compacted under pressure in the same way as the disk version, forming a homogeneous material with pores for water.

    If we talk about household self-cleaning filters, then most often discs and grids are used as a filter element, they are easier to maintain and more durable.

    Self-cleaning filters can be equipped with additional equipment.

    So you can meet:

    • self-cleaning filter with pressure gauge(it is convenient to monitor the pressure in the system, for example, if it increases relative to the pressure while maintaining water consumption, this may mean clogging, which means it is time to flush it);
    • filter with pressure reducer (additionally protects the water supply system from pressure surges at the inlet).

    Working principle and advantages

    Let us dwell in more detail on self-cleaning filters used in everyday life (mesh filters). In order to properly use such water supply units, you need to know their principle of operation.

    Let's analyze the operation of the mesh self-cleaning filter in order.

    During normal operation, water enters the inlet and, passing through a fine mesh in the filter bowl, leaves small mechanical particles on its surface.

    After a period of time, the accumulated dirt will have to be washed off. To do this, it would be necessary to stop the water supply, unwind the filter housing, remove the mesh and rinse it under water pressure, then assemble the system in the reverse order and resume the water supply.

    But in the case of a self-cleaning filter, all these procedures are not needed. It is enough to open a special drain ball valve and the plaque of mechanical particles will be washed away by pressure from the surface of the grid.

    It should be noted that it is first necessary to substitute a container for drained water or organize a special channel for the outflow of liquid from the drain tap into the sewerage system (this can be provided for at the stage of installing the plumbing system).

    The benefits can be summarized as follows:

    1. Significant savings on plumbing work on periodic cleaning of the sump.
    2. Saving service time.
    3. Budget savings due to the lack of replaceable cartridges, which quickly become unusable and require mandatory replacement.
    4. The possibility of continuous operation of the system even during flushing (depending on the model).
    5. Some manufacturers allow you to change the filter element and achieve the required quality of incoming water purification, for example, you can put a mesh for finer cleaning.

    Should I buy a Honeywell self-cleaning filter or pay attention to analogues

    The most popular among those involved in the installation of plumbing systems are products under the Honeywell brand. It has earned its popularity due to the high quality of all components, the ability to replace individual parts, as well as excellent reliability and service life of products.

    Particular attention should be paid to models with a transparent body, which allows you to visually assess the degree of contamination. As well as devices with additional functionality - Honeywell filters equipped with pressure reducers and pressure gauges.

    The only drawback of this product is the high cost.

    And here it is necessary to try to find an analogue that satisfies all the same quality and functionality requirements as Honeywell self-cleaning filters.

    HONEYWELL WORK VIDEO

    The following products from the group of self-cleaning household filters are presented on the market:

    1. Self-cleaning filter Valtec(equipped with two filter meshes, one inside the other, mesh cartridges, as well as from Honeywell, can be purchased separately. The disadvantages include the lack of models with pressure reducers and a transparent body).
    2. Production of the company TIEMME (Italy). The range includes filters even with a transparent housing, but not with pressure reducers.
    3. Itap filters are equipped with two pressure gauges - at the inlet and outlet, which is very convenient. With a large pressure difference, it is immediately clear that the filter mesh is clogged.
    4. The German manufacturer SYR also offers semi-automatic household options. Models are available for both cold and hot water.

    And it's far from full list Honeywell's competitors in the market.

    Of course, each product has its own advantages and disadvantages. But the consumer always votes in rubles.

    General technical data

    For this vacuum gas oil hydrotreatment, we recommend several identical filters for continuous operation. While one filter vessel is backwashing, the flow is distributed through the others.

    We offer identical filter containers according to filter specifications. Also provided is a backwash receiving tank for collecting sludge (a mixture of backwashed liquid and solids).

    In the event that a technical service engineer states an improper or incomplete assembly (kit) that prevents him from completing his task, we reserve the right to recall him until the the necessary conditions for commissioning. Additional costs associated with this are to be paid by the customer.

    Technical description of the backwash filter

    Process description

    The entire filtration plant consists of 4 identical filter tanks, 1 backwash receiving tank and 1 gas stabilization tank to provide backwash gas. The backwash cycle is automated.

    If the pressure drop over the filter elements reaches the allowable maximum differential pressure, one filter container is automatically isolated and temporarily disconnected from the line for the backwash stage. The remaining filters continue to work and filter the entire stream.

    For this application, the best solution is the "reverse solution" with a metal backwash filter, which contains tubular sintered porous metal plate elements with cells, screwed to the tube sheet at the top of the vessel (hanging upside down). During operation, the process of supplying a liquid containing solid particles is fed into the filter under the tube sheet (dirty side) and flows from the outside to the inside of the filter elements. Solid particles collect on the outer surface of the elements and the filtrate passes through the elements to the outer surface. After collection of particulate matter inner surface filter elements should be backwashed to remove particulate matter.

    With a solids concentration of 200 ppm in the feed process stream, the calculated average operating time to the maximum allowable pressure drop over the filter elements is approximately 6 hours. The backwash flow must be fast to ensure that there is sufficient residual solids trapped in the filter medium. The backwash starts when the 2" automatic ON/OFF valve is opened and the filter volume is evacuated. The entire backflush cycle typically takes less than 1 hour, which includes the time required to pump out the filtered gas oil, slowly fill the reservoir with impregnation fluid (not applicable here), and the time to perform a high speed oil flush.

    Technical comments:

    • Combustible gas (for the backwash process) is required for the combustible gas stabilization vessel at a minimum pressure of 13 barg;
    • Feed oil is required for filter tanks at a minimum temperature range ( must be reported).
    • Impregnation Fluid (if applicable): For maximum performance, it is recommended to use a light cycle oil for the filter system in order to start the saturation cycle after backwash cleaning, if necessary.
    • Nitrogen is needed to flush tanks and pipelines before opening.

    Specification of filter tanks

    Liquid/solid separation filters link the filtration process from outside to inside. At the end of each filtration cycle, the solids are backwashed with inner wall elements and are released as concentrated sludge. More details on liquid/solid separation filters.

    To heat the filter tank, it is necessary to provide electric heating around the tank.

    Heat tracing and insulation should be provided around the tube packing to prevent oil from blocking the instrument tubes when the vessel is idle. This heating, tank and pipe insulation not included within the scope of this offer.

    Painting / surface treatment

    • Inside: carbon steel + 3mm corrosion tolerance
    • Painting according to the manufacturer's standard, is discussed.
    • Since the container material is not stainless steel, no chemical cleaning, staining or passivation is necessary.

    Backwash Receiver Specifications

    The filter unit is equipped with an automatic backwash system. The backwash is regulated by delta P. The cycles are activated when the pressure drop across the filters reaches a certain value of 1.05 bar. A higher delta P allows longer filtration cycle times to be achieved. The receiving tank is sized to accommodate 2x (duplex) or 3x (triplex) backwash volumes of a single filter. The receiving tank is emptied after each backwash cycle and has a level control for safety. The backwash sludge is pushed out of the receiving tank with compressed nitrogen or fuel gas.

    To prevent solids from caking at the bottom of the backwash tank, pumps are often installed to keep the slurry particles circulating with the fresh cycle oil while the mixture is drained from the tank. Electrical heating is also provided by the Customer on the backflush liquid receiver to ensure that the oil can circulate without problems.

    The backwash receiving tank is designed in accordance with the attached specifications in Annex 1.2. ASME Design and Manufacturing Code VIII Section 1 unprinted.

    Gas Stabilization Tank Specifications

    A dedicated gas stabilization tank is required to provide sufficient fuel gas at the correct pressure to provide backwash.

    The pressure of the combustible gas present is too high in real time to be injected directly into the filter container. A pressure regulator is needed to reduce the pressure. (needs confirmation).

    The gas stabilization vessel is designed in accordance with the specifications in Appendix 1.3. Designed and manufactured in accordance with ASME Code VIII Section 1 without printing. The vessel is loaded cyclically depending on the backwash cycles, so a fatigue stress analysis is provided.

    Filter element specifications

    The filter elements are made of 1 porous metal tube (1000 mm long), fully welded. Each filter element has a mounting threaded plug and a closed end plug, as well as gas tungsten welding, specifically on each filter element.

    Filter media specification

    The filter elements are made of stainless steel (AISI 316L). The powder particles are bonded by sintering (not fasteners or adhesives) at temperatures well below their melting point, providing a fully cohesive granular structure and forming a stable (hard) filter media (material). Sintering provides the form, stability and property of a self-contained strong structural element.

    The pores are mechanically fixed taking into account the size and position, thus the medium (material) is dimensionally stable, resistant to changing mechanical loads, can be used in high temperatures and corrosive environments.

    Medium (material) is selected for the following application:
    Filter medium: 20µ
    Material: AISI 316L 1.4404
    Maximum operating temperature: 700°C oxidation / 500°C reduction, atmosphere

    KIP

    Instrumentation is designed, calculated and selected in accordance with the standard.

    Wherever you take water from, it will contain various impurities: sand, small stones, as well as waste that is generated as a result of our life. If the water contains debris particles, the pipes will begin to clog and deteriorate, which means that the plumbing will need to be repaired. To prevent such problems, water must be purified using special washing filters.

    From this article you will learn:

      What is the working principle of the washing water filter

      How to install such a filter

      What needs to be done to make the wash filter last longer

    What is a water filter for?

    Main flush filters are necessary to remove various clogging particles that are suitable for all water temperatures. The cleaning result directly depends on the size of the cells in the wash filter.

    How the mesh washing filter works, we think, is clear to everyone. It consists of:

    1. Cases with openings for the inflow and outflow of water.
    2. A filter mesh in the form of a cylinder.

    The main disadvantage of using such washing filters is the clogging of the mesh itself. Pollutant particles settle on its surface, which becomes slagged over time, and, as a result, water does not pass well. For cleaning, it is necessary to rinse with water in different directions, and then the debris accumulated after such treatment is removed through a hole with a tap.

    There are forward and backwash filters. In the first, the water that removes contaminants from the grid moves in one direction - from top to bottom. Cleaning occurs due to the strong pressure of water, which washes away all the slags into the container. This process stops after turning the valve lever. The second type of washing filters for cleaning involves the movement of water while removing contaminants from the bottom up.

    Wash filters are simple and complex. The cleaning of those that are simpler is started by the user. More complex equipment, as a rule, is equipped with special devices and can be automated. Devices can show time and pressure, as well as independently switch to flushing mode.

    We want to note the backwash filter. Its design allows you to clean the mesh without stopping the process of water purification. Flushing should always be of the highest quality, therefore, manufacturers of cleaning systems also offer devices for:

      suction of contaminants;

      automatic washing;

      manual washing.

    Filters can be cleaned for a certain time (by a timer) or according to the indications of a special device that measures pressure. Flushing water filters with a pressure gauge are able to automatically switch to backwash mode in case of significant clogging.

    The washing filter is applied to cold and hot water.

    Nets for washing filters are made from:

      steel sheet;

      woven threads;

      polymers.

    The durability of mechanical washing filters is influenced by the quality of the mesh itself and the reliability of the entire structure for water purification. Reliability depends on the following indicators:

      cleaning quality;

      slip coefficient.

    Irregularly shaped particles can slip through, which are sometimes located in such a way that the grid does not hold them. The flush water filter will not be reliable enough if the angle between the mesh and the flow is straight. With an increase in the speed of water movement, the resistance of the washing filter mesh increases. This indicator affects the quality of the device used for cleaning.

    As the water velocity increases, the likelihood of a breakthrough increases, and therefore, fewer debris particles fall on the flush filter mesh. To reduce the speed, you can increase the grid area, but this is difficult.

    You can use laser punching, then the washing filter will purify the water more efficiently. The mesh must prevent the formation of rust, since the filter is necessary to purify water of various temperatures. If there are substances in the water that contribute to the dissolution of metals, the likelihood of corrosion on the grid increases.

    Stainless steel meshes are often used for both industrial and domestic flush filters. The polymer mesh is less strong, but debris particles will not stick to it, which means that it is easier to wash it, and the device itself will work more efficiently.

    How to install a water filter

    Firms producing flushing water filters, in the documents attached to these devices, describe all the stages of their installation.

    The installation of a flush water filter requires compliance with safety regulations when carrying out work related to the installation of main flush water purifiers, as well as hygiene standards and technical requirements for the filtration system. The flushing filter must be installed in a heated room to avoid water freezing. The device is installed with the flask down, the pipeline can be horizontal or vertical. It is necessary to comply with the conditions of installation and construction. In addition, it is very important to pay attention to the direction of the water flow (this information can be seen on the filter cover). When installing a device with automatic flushing, it must be connected to the mains.

    How to clean the water filter

    The main flushing flow filter for water has an additional hole (at the bottom of the flask). There is a rotary valve on the lower outlet, which is closed during normal operation of the appliance. When dirt accumulates in the flask, impeding the movement of water, the valve must be turned. This increases the flow of water, and the blockage goes into the drain from the grid and from the bottom of the flask. After the flushing filter has been cleaned, the valve must be turned again and left in this position until a new flush is required.

    Sometimes an empty bucket is placed under the hole, but more often they do it differently. Now they produce such washing filters, to the hole of which a hose can be connected (for this, the design implies the presence of a fitting). From the hose, water goes straight into the sewer. This cleaning scheme makes this process as simple as possible, you just need to turn the valve a couple of times, and the water itself will wash everything.

    Important! Often, one or two pressure gauges are included in the design of washing water filters. The dial of this device, located at the top of the filter, is not a decorative element. When water passes through the filter, its head and pressure decrease somewhat. With an increase in the pollution of the grid, the water pressure at the outlet decreases. The degree of contamination can be determined by the difference in pressure at the inlet and outlet. If this value is more than 0.5 atm, the filter must be washed. This is very important when the flask is opaque and otherwise it is unlikely to be able to determine whether cleaning is needed. However, such a check can also be done empirically: observe the water pressure in the tap. But this method does not always give an adequate assessment, since the water pressure can change due to the fault of the local water utility.

    Flushing flow-through main water filters can be self-cleaning, but the mesh may deteriorate during operation. Small particles of debris will accumulate in the device, which over time will lead to the formation of a large number of clogged cells, the throughput will decrease. In this case, simply turning the valve will not solve the problem.

    The most extreme measure in this case is the replacement of the washing filter. Some manufacturers sell fixtures with spare grids. In addition, the grid can be cleaned on its own, but its original characteristics will never return to it. There are filters with backwash, they are not afraid of clogging the cells. In the process of direct flushing, water moves down along the grid, and during reverse washing, it flows from the inside of the grid to the outside. Water has such a pressure that the slag is washed out of the cells, and then it is removed from the flask through the drain fitting.

    The backwash mechanism, which cleans the filter when water moves from the inside of the mesh to the outside, can be implemented in different ways.

    Wash filters for mechanical cleaning are different. There are universal models that can be used to clean hot and cold water, their body is made of brass or bronze. Also, wash filters can be designed only for hot or cold water. In devices for low temperatures, the flask is transparent, made of plastic, which allows you to visually determine whether cleaning is required at the moment. The plastic from which the filter bowls are made is durable and can withstand pressures up to 16 atm. Models with brass bowls are suitable for both hot and cold water.

    Important! It is necessary to approach the cleaning of the washing filter carefully, it is necessary to control this process: open the valve in time and drain the water with the collected dirt. It is possible to make this process carried out completely independently.

    And it's real! In fact, you can choose a model of a water flush filter that has an automatic flush drive built into it (the filter must be connected to a sewer outlet). You just need to set the required interval, and the system will switch to cleaning mode on its own. Power is supplied from the mains or from batteries.

    Optionally, a differential pressure switch can be connected. It will measure the difference in water pressure between the inlet and outlet of the flush filter and automatically turn on the flush drive when this parameter exceeds a user-defined value.

    What you need to know in order for the washing filter of mechanical water purification to last a long time

    Always make sure that the temperature of the treated water matches the operating conditions. The flush filter should not be installed near heating systems (over 35–40 °C).

    It is very important to monitor the working pressure. If the norm is exceeded, the entire system can be damaged, and a lot of financial costs will be required to repair it.

    The filter should be cleaned at least once every six months. You can determine the need for it both by the difference in water pressure, and visually, simply by looking at whether the flask is transparent.

    To clean the wash filter, you must use the amount of water specified by the manufacturer, passed per unit of time in a safe mode. Do not exceed this value, otherwise there is a high probability of equipment failure.

    Washing water filters can be purchased in various configurations, while prices will also differ. In addition, prices may not be comparable for the same products from different manufacturers. Therefore, if you want to purchase the most economical option, choose high-quality equipment.

    On Russian market There are many companies that develop water treatment systems. It is quite difficult to choose one or another type of water filter on your own, without the help of a professional. And even more so, you should not try to mount a water treatment system yourself, even if you have read several articles on the Internet and it seems to you that you have figured everything out.

    It is safer to contact a filter installation company that provides a full range of services: specialist advice, analysis of water from a well or well, selection of suitable equipment, delivery and connection of the system. In addition, it is important that the company provides filter service.

    Such is Biokit, which offers a wide range of reverse osmosis systems, water filters and other equipment online that can return tap water to its natural characteristics.

    Biokit specialists are ready to help you:

      connect the filtration system yourself;

      understand the process of choosing water filters;

      select replacement materials;

      troubleshoot or solve problems with the involvement of specialist installers;

      find answers to your questions over the phone.

    Entrust water purification systems from Biokit - let your family be healthy!

    From mechanical impurities - one of the most common things that can be encountered when consuming water, even from a water supply system (which has already passed the stage of water treatment, ideally) There are many options for how to deal with such pollution.

    1.1 Types of filters for cleaning from mechanical impurities

    Another model of flush type filter, inlet diameter ½ inch

    The main types are as follows:

    • Methods are used coarse cleaning(remove particles ranging in size from 20 to 100 microns);
    • Fine purification methods are used (they purify water from particles of 1-5 microns in size).

    Separately, the so-called “mud filters” (including industrial ones) are considered, the task of which is to keep dirt from entering the system (here we are not talking about fine cleaning, they can be used when water is supplied from a well).

    In this case, the filters are mounted mainly at the outlet of the well. This is done so that the water is purified on the approaches from the well, and already enters the system in a usable form.

    In the case of using a well as a source of water, coarse cleaning will be indispensable in the water treatment system (as well as fine cleaning products).

    Filter cleaning methods are divided into:

    • Flushing (usually - main);
    • Non-flushing (usually a cartridge is used).

    A feature of filters in which a cartridge is used (including fine cleaning) is precisely the inability to rinse the filter cartridge; after the end of its service life, it must be replaced.

    At the same time, cartridges for filtering hot and cold water are not interchangeable, since the temperature is higher than that for which the housing is designed, deforms it or the cartridge.

    In addition, it must be taken into account that the life of the cartridge may vary depending on the composition of the water, and if it is necessary to replace it, the water supply will have to be shut off.

    The flushing filter (including the main one) involves certain methods of cleaning the filter element.

    The same blocks for hot water are usually opaque and metallic. The transparent housing of the filter for cold water sometimes allows you to "assess its condition by eye".

    2 Which wash filter for mechanical cleaning should be chosen?

    If you buy a main filter for hot or cold water using coarse or fine cleaning methods for domestic use, a model with the possibility of backwashing will be more convenient (also suitable for supplying water from a well).

    Despite the fact that the main filter can be washed in one way or another without shutting down the system, it is recommended to flush the mesh separately (that is, still turn off the system for a while), but this is done much less frequently than you need to change the cartridge.

    If we compare the types of filters (regardless of whether they are designed for hot or cold water and what methods they use) - mesh or disc - it is often mentioned that the disc type of filter under similar conditions has greater performance due to the larger filtration area.

    But, only the difference in the size of the filtration unit can provide a big gain, and with similar sizes, both the mesh and disc filters show the same indicators for the water passed through them (including in the case of fine cleaning).

    At the same time, a coarse or fine disc filter may be more demanding on the pressure of incoming water than a mesh one, and also be more expensive.

    Before buying, you should decide on the parameters of the system on which the filter will be installed using coarse cleaning methods, and it is planned to use it for hot or cold water.

    If the main filter is installed separately, it is necessary to check that the pipe connections and the diameter of the pipe and filter connections are compatible (or take care of their fitting).

    If a cartridge type filter is installed in a block filtration system, care must also be taken to ensure that all blocks are compatible.

    Accordingly, the choice is based on the following parameters:

    • Is the filter standalone or will it be installed in a multi-stage system. Sometimes the main filter is installed on the pipeline in a separate apartment, for example;
    • What type of filter will be installed and whether it is compatible with the piping system (filter working methods);
    • Depending on the type chosen, the manufacturer and cost are determined.

    Directly from the products of various manufacturers, we can mention filters (coarse and fine cleaning) Honeywell or Atlas, and from the manufacturers of the CIS countries - the Russian Geyser.

    The products of the Danish company Honeywell are distinguished by reliability and build quality. Filters of the described type from Honeywell are usually equipped with a backwash system. And also from Honeywell filters, you can expect additional equipment (with a built-in pressure gauge, for example).

    Honeywell filters are also highly resistant to wear and pressure surges because the filter housing is made of solid brass (a feature of this Honeywell product). The downside here can only be the cost, that is, less Honeywell filters are less available.

    Water purification filters from the company, according to the manufacturer, compete with European counterparts and are used both in Russia and in European countries.

    Under the brand name Geyser, both separate types of filters for mechanical cleaning, as well as entire systems for various purposes (complex water purification for cottages and country houses, purification technology for enterprises).

    As a result, several specialized Geyser solutions compete with more universal counterparts. The Geyser company produces both mesh filters and filters where a cartridge is used. The comparative advantage of the Geyser is also the price (compared to the previous manufacturer).

    Thus, Geyser products will be more budget option. Therefore, when choosing between Geyser and Honeywell, we will prefer Geyser in terms of cost, and Honeywell in terms of quality.
