What is the Crimean Tatar language? What grammatical features does it have? Is the Tatar language related to it? We will look for answers to these questions.

Crimean Tatars

The Crimean Tatar people are often identified with the Tatars living in Russia. This delusion has been going on since the existence Russian Empire when all nomadic Turkic-speaking peoples were called "Tatars". This also included Kumyks, Azerbaijanis, etc.

Tatars in Crimea represent the indigenous population. Their descendants are various ancient tribes inhabiting the Northern Black Sea region. A significant role in ethnogenesis was played by the Turkic peoples, Polovtsy, Khazars, Pechenegs, Karaites, Huns and Krymchaks.

The historical formation of the Crimean Tatars into a separate ethnic group took place on the territory of the peninsula in the XIII-XVII centuries. Among its representatives, the self-name "Crimeans" is often used. According to the anthropological type, they belong to the Caucasoids. The exception is the Nogai subethnos, which has features of both Caucasoid and Mongoloid races.

Crimean Tatar language

About 490 thousand people speak the Crimean language. It is distributed on the territory of Russia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Romania, Turkey and is one of the common languages in the Republic of Crimea.

In writing, the Latin alphabet is usually used, although writing in Cyrillic is also possible. Most of the native speakers live in the Crimea (almost 300 thousand people). In Bulgaria and Romania, the number of Crimean Tatars is about 30,000.

The Tatar language is his "relative", but not too close. Both languages belong to the Turkic and are included in the Kypchak subgroup. Further, their branches diverge. Tatar was strongly influenced by Finno-Ugric, Russian, and Arabic. The Crimean Tatars were influenced by Italians, Greeks, Cumans and Kypchaks.

Dialects

The Crimean Tatar people are divided into three main sub-ethnoses, each of which speaks its own dialect. In the northern part of the peninsula, a steppe dialect was formed, belonging to the Nogai-Kypchak languages.

The southern, or Yalyboy, dialect is close to Italians and Greeks living on the southern shores of the peninsula. The dialect contains many words borrowed from their languages.

The most common is the middle dialect. It represents an intermediate link between the other two. It belongs to the Polovtsian-Kypchak and contains many Oghuz elements. Each dialect includes several dialects.

Classification and features

The Crimean Tatar language belongs to the Turkic languages, which, in turn, belong to the Altaic group along with the Mongolian, Korean and Tungus-Manchurian languages. However, this theory also has opponents who deny the existence of the Altai group in principle.

There are other difficulties in the classification of language. As a rule, it is attributed to the Kypchak-Polovtsian subgroup of languages. This is incorrect, because then its connection with the Oguz languages, which is observed in the middle dialect, is not taken into account.

Taking into account all the dialectical features of the Crimean language, it is classified as follows:

History and writing

Dialects of the language arose in the Middle Ages. At that time, a large number of nationalities lived in the Crimean lands, which influenced the formation of the language. That is why the Crimean Tatar language differs significantly in different parts of the peninsula.

During the period of the Crimean Khanate, the population was forced to speak Ottoman. During the Russian Empire, the culture of the Crimeans was in decline. Its restoration began in the 19th century. Then thanks to the literary Crimean Tatar language appeared. It is based on the southern dialect.

Until 1927, the letter was written in Arabic characters. The following year, the middle dialect was chosen as the basis for the literary language, and the writing was translated into He was called "yanalif", or "a single Turkic alphabet."

In 1939, they tried to make it Cyrillic, but in the 90s, the return of the Latin script began. It differed somewhat from yanalif: non-standard letters of the Latin alphabet were replaced by symbols with diacritical marks, which added to the similarity with the Turkish language.

Vocabulary and main characteristics

Crimean Tatar is The meaning of words and phrases does not change due to endings, but by “gluing” suffixes and affixes to words. They can carry information not only about lexical meaning words, but also about the connection between words, etc.

The language contains eleven parts of speech, six cases, four types of verb conjugation, three forms of verb tense (present, past and future). It lacks the gender of pronouns and nouns. For example, the Russian words he, she, it corresponds to only one form - “o”.

At present, it is very easy to find a book, dictionary and translator into the Crimean Tatar language on the Internet. Therefore, getting to know him will not be difficult. Below are some examples of standard phrases and words of this language:

Elder sister

Arsen Bekirov
“People hate each other because they are afraid of each other; afraid because they don't know anything about each other; they don’t know because they don’t communicate,” said human rights activist Martin Luther King. It so happened that the Crimean Tatars know the mentality of the Slavs better. The Crimean Tatar in the Slavic team is a frequent occurrence. The opposite is rare. If you, a Russian or a Ukrainian, find yourself in the company of Crimean Tatars, some simple advice from Respublika will help you avoid misunderstandings.

national character
Crimean Tatars are a European people, but with Asian tricks. The national character is a combination of European rationalism with Eastern reverence for traditions. Crimean Tatars are very kind to the elderly and children. It is customary to address elders with “you”, even if the age difference is small. The word "efendi" is added to the male name (translated approximately as "sir"), and to the female - "khanum" ("ma'am"). But only young flowering women are called that. It is better to address older ladies as "beta" - grandmother. Often to male names add "agha" (pronounced in a guttural, "Ukrainian" manner). Literally translated, it means "brother", and is more respectful than "effendi". By the way, the stress in almost all words of the Crimean Tatar language is on the last syllable.
However, you may not use these words-prefixes. Most importantly, remember: to the elders - "on you." Although such a manifestation of respect for age, especially if a person is unfamiliar, is natural, regardless of nationality. But what is really important is the ability to listen to elders. The fact is that among the Crimean Tatars (especially men) it is not customary to interrupt the speaker - especially if he is gray-haired. Listen, and then express your opinion - and demand the same attitude towards yourself.

Away
Take off your shoes as close to the threshold as possible - most Crimean Tatars are sensitive to the cleanliness of carpets, which, as a rule, cover the entire area of \u200b\u200bthe dwelling. It is not customary to come to visit empty-handed.
“If the hosts have children, guests are sure to take treats for them. If they want to please older people, they bring a pack of coffee. Alcohol is not taken as a present, as it may be perceived disapprovingly,” said Refat Chubarov, a Crimean Tatar politician and deputy of the Crimean Supreme Council.
Slow conversations “about life” are usually conducted over a cup of coffee. To refuse treats means to offend the owner. “Start every conversation with questions about the health and well-being of loved ones,” recommends Chubarov. Then they discuss current affairs, share plans for the future. You can show familiarity with the Crimean Tatar culture by adding the expressions “Alla verse” (God will give) or “kysmet olsa” (if luck accompanies) to the conversation. But suggesting to sing a song after dinner is not worth it - this is not accepted among the Crimean Tatars.

In joy and sorrow
If you come to a wedding or other Crimean Tatar celebration together with the second half, it is better not to sit side by side all evening, but to separate - a man - to men, a woman - to women. It is not customary to invite someone else's wife to a dance. By the way, the same applies to signs of attention that involve touching: you can skip ahead, but it’s better to give a hand when leaving the car with caution. Frankly admire the appearance of wives and daughters is not worth it. If the Crimean Tatars want to praise the hostess, they will respond well to the home environment.
Crimean Tatars may be offended if you just say "Tatars" without the adjective "Crimean". At best, you will be delicately corrected: “Tatars live in Kazan. It's a different people."

Crimean Tatar: key words

Crimean Tatars sometimes speak loudly and quickly. From the outside, it may seem that they swear or are aggressive. In fact, this is just a feature of speech, like the Spaniards or Italians.

About the Crimean Tatar "gopniks" and normal people
Eskender Eminov
The most important thing - remember: among the Crimean Tatars, as among any nationality, there is its own poorly educated stratum - those people who are commonly called "gopota" and "cattle". They know neither the rules of etiquette nor the traditions of the people. Unfortunately, such noisy guys, poorly dressed and often smelling of cheap alcohol, are the first to attract attention in public transport, discos, and anywhere they go. You should not draw conclusions about the people, based on information gleaned from communication with such Crimean Tatars. They must be avoided, as well as "gopniks" of any nationality - Russians, Ukrainians, Georgians.

The main part of the Crimean Tatars are peace-loving sedate people, open to friendship and positive conversation. Yes, it may seem strange, but making friends on the street with a Crimean Tatar is much easier than with a Slav. They are less suspicious and distrustful.
Another important feature of the people is indifference. In my experience, the Tatars are more willing to come to your aid in a difficult moment. And they certainly will not stand peacefully if someone insults a woman in their presence.

Description of the section "Crimean Tatar language"

In this section you can download for free and without registration Crimean Tatar dictionaries. The Crimean Tatar language or the Crimean language - the language of the Crimean Tatars, belongs to the Turkic languages that are part of the Altaic family of languages. Writing based on the Latin alphabet and Cyrillic.

The total number of speakers of the Crimean Tatar language in the territory of the former USSR is approximately 350 thousand people, of which about 250 thousand are in Crimea. In Bulgaria and Romania - about 30 thousand.

Traditionally, the Crimean Tatar language is usually attributed to the Kypchak-Polovtsian subgroup of the Kypchak languages, which also includes the Karachay-Balkarian, Kumyk and Karaim languages. However, as already noted, the middle dialect, on which the literary language is based, occupies an intermediate position between the Kypchak and Oghuz languages, so this classification is not entirely correct.

Be sure to download the "Russian-Crimean-Tatar Dictionary" from the site. It will help you with any difficulties in speaking and translating words.

Crimean Tatars, in Tatar krym tatarlars, called themselves the Tatar population, starting from the fore-steppe zone and up to the Black Sea coast. The Tatar population of the entire northern, steppe part called themselves Nogai Tatars (Nogai Tatarlars) or Nogais (Nogailar), and the Tatar population of the southern coast of Crimea was sometimes designated by the ethnonym Tat.

The Crimean Tatar language belongs to the group of Kypchak languages (Kumyk, Crimean Karaite, separate dialects of Karakalpak, Uzbek, medieval Kipchak languages, Kuman), which to varying degrees were influenced by the Oguz languages, in this case mainly in the field of phonetics and partly vocabulary.
