With these words of the prayer, other words from the teaching of St. Macarius on prayer are peculiarly echoed: “The true foundation of prayer is this: to be attentive to thoughts and to pray in great silence and peace. A person who is praying needs to direct all his efforts to thoughts and what serves as food for evil thoughts, then cut off, and aspire with his thought to God and not fulfill the desires of thoughts, but gather the whirling thoughts together from everywhere, distinguishing natural thoughts from the evil ones. The soul under sin is likened to a great forest on a mountain or a reed on a river, or some thicket of thorns and trees, therefore those intending to pass through this place should stretch their hands forward and with effort and difficulty push the branches apart in front of them. So the soul is surrounded by a whole forest of thoughts inspired by a resisting force, which is why great diligence and attentiveness of the mind are needed in order for a person to distinguish alien thoughts inspired by a resisting force.

Second Prayer of Saint Antiochus to our Lord Jesus Christ

... In this prayer of repentance, a whole list of sins is given that we sin daily; In order for this daily repentance to be sincere, one should delve into the essence of the sins confessed here, into their connection and difference. Some of them deserve special mention.

…I swear by your name… Here are the words of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself: You also heard what was said of the ancients: do not break your oath, but fulfill your oaths before the Lord. But I say to you: do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God; nor the earth, for it is His footstool; nor Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great King; do not swear by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black. But let your word be: yes, yes; no no; and what is more than this is from the evil one(Matthew 5:33-37). Undoubtedly, the words of the evening confession of sins speak not only of an immediate oath, but also of any violation of the 3rd commandment of the Law of God - about worship and commemoration of the name of God in vain (note that the violation of the same commandment includes catechism and inattention in prayer - like saying name of God with violation of reverence and deceitfulness).

... "Whoever the spirit of blasphemy worries about and who wants to get rid of him, let him know for sure that it is not his soul that is guilty of such thoughts, but an unclean demon ... Therefore, we, despising him and imputing his thoughts for nothing, will say to him: Get away from Me, Satan: I will worship the Lord My God and serve Him alone (cf. Matt. 4:10); let your words turn against your head!” ( Saint John of the Ladder)

Saint John also points out the mysterious inner cause of blasphemous thoughts: this is pride. "He who has triumphed over this passion has cast off pride." “Let us stop judging and condemning our neighbor, and we will not be afraid of blasphemous thoughts: for the cause and root of the second is the first.” The prayer-confession also draws our attention to these sins, internally connected with blasphemy, against our neighbor:

…Or whom I reproach; or slander whom with my anger, or grieved... It speaks of a direct reproach ( reproach), about a passionate unfair condemnation ( slander whom with my anger); finally, even “just” and unspoken anger somehow upsets our neighbors ( saddened). The prayer of repentance turns us to the root of these sins against our neighbor: ... or what are you angry about… Anger is one of the eight major passions. Anger is permissible only at demons and at oneself.

…Or saddened my brother… It would seem that this sin has just been discussed; but above it was a question of sadness caused by manifestations of anger, and my brother can be saddened by inattention, and unreason, and simply my general sinfulness.

This evening prayer is all aimed at chastity, at the confrontation of lust - dark sweets. Expressions such as: striving for passions and kindling the uprising of the bodily, should not be translated into modern Russian: in Church Slavonic they are more understandable, because they point to the whole worldview imprinted in them. Modern Christians live in a world that is literally in the grip of prodigal madness, so even for a married lay person who wants to live with God, the struggle to live chastely deeds and words, in its own way no less tense than for a monk. Prayer is an indispensable weapon in this struggle.

This prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos is the cry of a man who has realized how little his will for good can counteract sin. The Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos, beginning with this kontakion, was written in the 7th century in Constantinople. This is the first (and most beautiful) of the akathists, which has become a model for all subsequent ones. All 12 ikos of the akathist end with multiple “rehashings” of the Archangel’s greeting to the Blessed Virgin – “rejoice!”, the final of which – We magnify the heavenly purity of the Unsophisticated Virgin, who indescribably gave birth to Christ our God, and in Her purity “Most Honorable Cherubim” Bride Not bride appears before us as the greatest warrior with the forces of evil - Chosen Governor, having an invincible power.

If we turn to the Greek language in which the akathist is written, we will see that all these three words, translated with literal accuracy into Church Slavonic and included in our religious consciousness, should have been perceived by the Greeks somewhat differently than we perceive them.

rejoice- the greeting of the Archangel Gabriel, brought to us by the Gospel, - both before the Nativity of Christ and after it was in Greek the usual greeting - the same as our “hello”. In the appearance of the Angel, in his wondrous and mysterious words, the inner meaning of the greeting, forgotten in everyday life, of course, was renewed and shone with all its might; akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos (and every later inspired akathist), all permeated with these “rejoice!” and sparkling with the joy of magnificence, also resurrects the meaning of the Greek word, dormant in everyday language. But in Russian (and Old Russian) they greeted each other not with the word “rejoice”, but with the word “hello” (in which we usually forget the wish for health). “Rejoice” remains for us a word always richer, more special – a conscious word about joy, a unique greeting for the Blessed Virgin Mary and the saints of God.

Bride Not bride is a direct, literal translation of two Greek words. Church Slavonic bride corresponds to the Greek word νύμφη "nymph", which means not only a girl-bride, but also a newlywed wife and a young woman. New Testament(and the Greek translation of the Bible) gave this word a great mystical depth: the Bride of the Lamb in the Revelation of John the Theologian (Rev. 19:7; 21:9; 22:17) is not only destined for Him, but also is with Him in a mysterious marriage; this is an image of both the Mother of God and the Church (in her we recognize the bride of the Song of Songs and the prophetic books of Scripture). And the Greek word ανύμφευτος, translated by the Slavic word not bride is the negative form of the first word, meaning "unmarried"; this word was quite common in Greek. For Greek, but not for Slavic! After all, in the Slavic bride- this is exactly non-slave, an unknown (that is, just what the Greek non-bride corresponds to) a girl who did not marry, although she was destined for him; the word itself carries the meaning of purity. Inside the Slavic language the word not bride inexplicable. It brings a new shade of meaning to the expression of the akathist: Pure Bride, but - not bride, not ordinary, not comparable to any other bride.

The need for daily repentance for sins committed throughout life is explained by the words of St. Anthony the Great: “Say that you are sinners, and mourn everything that you have done in a state of negligence. For this, the favor of the Lord will be with you and will work in you: for He is good and forgives the sins of all who turn to Him, whoever they are, so that He will not remember them anymore. Preserving and constantly renewing repentance for the sins of our life, not forgetting about them, we should not at the same time “convert them in our mind”, re-experience, cling to them with memory. This is one of the manifestations of the art of "invisible warfare", the middle "royal" path, which a Christian should follow.

This prayer helps to consider daytime sins and maintains the memory of those committed earlier - all the days of life. Let us recall that sins sincerely confessed in the Sacrament of Penance are completely forgiven by the Lord, but this does not mean that we should forget about them. Sins remain in memory for humility and contrition about the deed.

Both at confession in the Sacrament of Repentance, and at daily confession to God, one must confess one's sins separately, consciously. Therefore, let us dwell on the sins mentioned in the prayer and indicate what deeds, deeds, words and thoughts can be meant by them. St. Ephraim the Syrian expands the concept of idle talk: “And what is an idle word? A promise of faith not kept in practice. A person believes and confesses Christ, but remains idle, does not do what Christ commanded. And a bad review of another is an idle word, because it retells what has not been done and what it does not see.

Despondency. This sin is often directly related to idle talk:

Laziness, as we see, is closely connected with the passion of despondency. The Orthodox catechism lists “laziness in relation to the teaching of piety, prayer and public worship” among the sins against the 1st commandment of the Law of God.

Rebuttal. “Bind your tongue, furiously striving for contradiction, and seventy times seven times a day fight with this tormentor,” the holy fathers teach in the words of John of the Ladder. “Whoever in a conversation stubbornly wishes to insist on his opinion, even if it is fair, let him know that he is possessed by a diabolical illness; and if he does this in conversation with his equals, then perhaps rebuking the elders will heal him; but if he treats those who are big and wise in this way, then this disease from people is incurable.”

Disobedience. “The one who disobeys the word without a doubt does not obey the deed, for whoever is unfaithful in word is adamant in deed,” – this is how St. John of the Ladder connects disobedience with contradiction. Everything in the Church is built on obedience; we must obey everyone and everyone whom the Lord has placed over us. Complete obedience in matters of spiritual life is necessary in relation to the spiritual father, in general, to pastors and spiritual teachers. But complete and unquestioning obedience (in everything that does not contradict the faith and the Law of God) should be rendered by the wife to her husband, the children who have not yet created their own family - to their parents. Obey your superiors.

slander- a direct violation of the 9th commandment of the Law of God ( Do not bear false witness against your neighbor– Ref. 20.16). Any slander, any gossip and gossip, any unfair censure is slander. Almost certainly leads to slander condemnation of a neighbor, directly forbidden by the Lord: Judge not lest ye be judged(Matthew 7:1).

Acquisition. Covetousness... is idolatry, - says the apostle Paul (Col. 3, 5). Acquisitiveness is the passion of greed, which is one of the eight main passions, in action: any hoarding, addiction to various objects, stinginess and, conversely, wastefulness.

Theft. This concept includes not only any theft, but also any use of what is “badly lying”: for example, “read out” a book in the library or with friends. A particularly severe type of theft is sacrilege - “appropriation of what is dedicated to God and what belongs to the Church” (see “Orthodox Catechism”), that is, not only the direct theft of sacred objects, but also: to take, without asking for the priest’s blessing, donated on the eve or brought to the temple by benefactors for distribution, etc.

untruthfulness- any lie with a word. Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who speak the truth are pleasing to Him(Prov. 12:22).

We must remember that there is no "innocent" lie, any lie is not from God. “A lie, in which there is no intention to harm one’s neighbor, is impermissible, because it does not agree with love and respect for one’s neighbor and is not worthy of a person, and especially a Christian, created for truth and love,” says St. Philaret in his “Orthodox Catechism.”

bad business- making a profit, profit in a bad, unrighteous way. The concept can include any body kit, measurement, deceit, but also any earnings that bring evil to people - for example, based on the satisfaction or incitement of sinful passions. The falsification of any documents and the use of forged documents (for example, travel tickets), the purchase of stolen goods on the cheap are also bad business. This also includes parasitism, “when they receive a salary for a position or pay for a business, but they do not fulfill their positions and deeds and, thus, they steal both the salary or pay, and the benefit that labor could bring to society or to the one for whom they should have worked. ” (see “Orthodox Catechism”).

mischief- covetousness, greed mshela- gain. This includes all types of extortion and bribery. And, since this sin is included in the prayer of repentance for all Orthodox Christians, you should carefully consider your life and discover its manifestations in it.

Serious sins committed during life, from among those that are not directly named in this prayer, should be included in it, and not “summed up” under one of the points (for example, blasphemy, grumbling against God, or attempting suicide, or killing the unborn children - abortion, etc.).
