What to carry winter gear? Of course, on a sled, on a children's plastic sledge, called in the fishing environment "KARYTO". On the shelves of stores, now not only children's goods, but also for anglers, there are several sizes of such sledges. They can vary in size, shape and profile of the bottom.

If your company has been going fishing by car for years, then it makes sense to purchase completely the same type of “trough”. Having folded them according to the principle of nesting dolls, you can very noticeably minimize their volume by putting them in the trunk or in the cabin. Or even by placing "troughs" on the external trunk or arcs.

I must say right away that I was not the first to come up with the idea of using them for fishing. The theme of ordinary children's sleds was developed more. Tried to put them on skis. They glued fiberglass boxes with their placement on fluoroplastic "slips". But when I first saw children's sleds on the ice, I realized that they surpassed my technical searches in all respects.

Why are they so attractive?
Are made of frost-resistant and shock-resistant plastic.
Can be stored in any conditions.
Being deformed during storage, after removing the load, they return to their shape again.
They do not require special care, they are light, and there is enough internal volume for winter luggage.
A large footprint allows you to carry a fairly heavy load even on loose snow.
They can be used in conjunction with a backpack or fishing box.
And most importantly, they can be somewhat modernized, bringing them even closer to our fishing needs.

He didn’t stupidly copy what he saw, but immediately ran to the store to get them, and when he brought them home, he first of all listened to the malicious mockery of his family. Like: “What kind of mermaids are you going to ride fishing?” or “You rarely bring so many fish!”

But the plan for their tuning in my head was already ripening, therefore, having taken essential tool I got down to business. The first is the towing eye. For this, steel wire (preferably stainless steel) with a diameter of about 2.0-3.0 mm is best suited.

For the manufacture of technological loops on the sides, after several trial options, I took segments of a stainless steel steel cable with a diameter of 1.5-2.5 mm. The holes for the eye and loops are perfectly melted with a hot nail on a gas burner, the diameter of which is equal to two diameters of the workpiece wire, that is, 4-6 mm.

To attach the tow rope, I used a carabiner, so the diameter of the eye ring is arbitrary. To limit movement and not to break holes in the plastic, I used two lock washers. The fixation of the eye from the wire occurs by bending the ends of the workpiece in different directions (such as a "mustache").

In the manufacture of side loops of wire, I proceeded from the size of the hook of the elastic shock absorber. The stopper for the loop is a flattened small piece of thin-walled metal pipe.

During transportation, the trough is empty, but on the ice there is a folding chair and a backpack. In order not to lose all this on the road, I use elastic shock absorbers.

A real, experienced angler always has additional equipment. For winter fishing, it is desirable to have a tent, an ice screw, a fishing rod, a box, and so on. In this case, a lot depends on the fishing conditions of a particular region. If the reservoir is somewhere nearby, then there are no special problems. In such conditions, you can hide from the weather at any time and return to take what you accidentally left at home.

If you need to get to the reservoir for a long time, then you need to have a device that could facilitate the process of movement.

The fact is that it is very difficult to move around in winter, and even in all the equipment. Not only do clothes restrict movement, you also need to carry equipment. But if you have a sled for fishing in winter, then this problem can be solved. In addition, if you correctly approach the solution of this problem, then the sled can have more advanced functionality. For example, a sled can serve as a stool or tent.

There is a huge variety of different designs sled just for fishing. Sleds on metal skids are very popular. Sledges can be both folding and solid. Unfortunately, such sleds move well on ice, but on snow, and even with a load, this is a problem. Alternatively, instead of runners, children's skis can be adapted, then there will be no problems with moving through the snow.

In this regard, many anglers have begun to switch to plastic structures with wide skids that do not sink in the snow. At the same time, such structures have low sides, which can be attributed to a disadvantage, since it is necessary to fix the load additionally. Despite this, this factor suits many fans of winter fishing.

How to make a do-it-yourself fishing sled

Anyone can assemble such a structure. The main thing is to decide what kind of sled is needed and with what functionality. If you need a sledge in order to deliver fishing accessories to the fishing place, then they can be made on the basis of wood, plastic, aluminum or iron. It all depends on the capabilities of the fisherman and the purpose of the sled.

Metal sledges can be made both collapsible and non-collapsible. More recently, other structures simply did not exist. The metal structure is a rigid and durable base, on top of which there is a platform made of wooden planks or plywood. This is the so-called cargo area, which serves to transport cargo. Their only drawback is the difficulty in operating in snowy areas. Due to the fact that the runners are narrow, they fall through the snow and a person needs to expend a lot of effort to move them, and even loaded ones.

Similar plastic sleds are made in the form of a trough. They have good performance characteristics. They move without problems both on ice and on snow. In this case, you should pay attention to the dimensions of the structure and the quality of workmanship. Although many argue that such a design is not difficult to do on your own.

Wooden sleds are very popular. This is the most affordable and easily processed material, and structures made from it will last for many years. The main thing is to have the following tools and materials on hand:

  • pine boards;
  • glue for wood;
  • sandpaper;
  • jigsaw;
  • electric drill, etc.

Manufacturing technology

  1. You need to take two boards, from which two skids will be made. On them, draw the appropriate shape and cut with a jigsaw.
  2. The runners need to be fastened together. For this, cross bars of the appropriate size are used. The connection may consist of glue and round spikes.
  3. To strengthen the design, additional transverse strips are attached to the front and back of the skids, planted on glue and on spikes.
  4. For more aesthetic appearance, all excess is cut off and cleaned well.
  5. The board, which will later serve as a cargo platform, is prepared for subsequent fastening by cutting out all the necessary grooves and drilling the appropriate holes.
  6. An additional bar for fastening is fixed on the back of the 2 runners.
  7. The places of rounding of the runners are reinforced with strips of aluminum or iron. This is necessary so that various obstacles do not spoil the runners of the sled.
  8. Before final assembly, it is better to check all parts for compliance with the dimensions. At the same time, you need to make sure that all the elements are sanded and coated with a waterproof varnish.

After the sled is assembled, they should be tested for strength by laying on them all the devices that are used in winter fishing. Only after that, it makes sense to take them with you.

Factory made fishing sled

For those who do not want to spend their time making sleds, there is an opportunity to purchase ready-made ones at a retail outlet.

  • It is light and, at the same time, strong sled, weighing 10.4 kg.
  • Roomy and have dimensions: 165x81x43 cm.
  • Relatively high sides.
  • Well transported on the ice surface.

This is a very light sled, weighing 3.6kg, which is easy to transport by hand. They are made of polyethylene, which is not afraid of sub-zero temperatures. Due to the presence of wide skids, as well as a low center of gravity, they are stable under any operating conditions.

Some anglers use children's sleds for their fishing needs. If they are available, there is no need to specially make or buy sleds. Unfortunately, in the presence of a tangible snow cover, problems arise with their operation. In addition, these sleds are not intended for fishing and you will have to come up with additional elements.

This is the most simple design which is very easy to transport as they take up very little space. Unfortunately, these sleds do not fit many accessories needed for winter fishing. In addition, inflatable parts are not particularly reliable.

Such sleds have a number of advantages. Firstly, they are quite roomy, and secondly, they will easily pass over any surface, due to the wide plane of contact. The main material is plastic, which is not afraid of frost. They are easy to move on ice or snow with a regular rope. These sleds have high sides, which securely holds the load inside the structure.

Due lung application material, the sled itself is not heavy, which means it is convenient to use. There are structures that are attached to the snowmobile. This is especially true when there is a long hike ahead. Naturally, such conditions require more capacious sleds, up to 2 meters long.

How to make a do-it-yourself drag sled

Sledge sleds are not at all difficult to make with your own hands. For this you can use any available material, from wood to metal. The simplest design is wooden. For this, it is done wooden frame, consisting of two skids and two bars connecting these skids. A sheet of plywood is attached to the bars on top or stuffed ordinary boards. A metal handle or hitch must then be attached to the structure so that the sled can be moved using the snowmobile. If you use metal instead of wood, then the structure will turn out to be much stronger, given that you have to move quite far.

In this case, special attention should be paid to the strength of the coupling mechanism. For its manufacture, you can use two pieces of pipe, one of the ends of which should be attached directly to the frame of the sled.

Mounting option for drag sleds

  • Holes are made around the entire perimeter of the sleigh.
  • Metal cables with a special fastening should be inserted into each of the holes. Moreover, rubber bands must also be used in fasteners, which always guarantee reliable fastening of the entire contents of the sled.
  • For ease of use, you will need a rope that is attached to special bolts attached to the frame of the sled. The rope can be folded in four, and its length can reach about 20 meters.

Finnish fishermen widely use such sleds, while domestic fishermen do not really recognize them. The design consists of a chair, which is located on the skids. Its advantage is that you can sit on it both while driving and while fishing. They are very convenient for moving fishing equipment.

First you need to provide yourself with tools and materials:

  • Prepare sheet steel.
  • Wooden bars made of pine or other wood.
  • Metal rod with thread on both sides.
  • Metal overlays.
  • Tires.
  • Bolts.
  • screws.

The assembly of the sled contains the following steps:

  1. Steel leaves are bent on both sides.
  2. In front of the formed skids, two holes are made for a metal rod.
  3. At the back, where the angler will stand with his feet, rubber pads are mounted. They will prevent slipping under the action of snow.
  4. The dimensions of the structure must be proportional. The top bar, in size, should be shorter than the distance between the runners.
  5. At a distance of 1 meter from the curved edge, it should be welded on both sides along the bar. To do this, you need to use beveled bars with self-tapping screws.
  6. Horizontal posts should be welded to the rod, in the center of the metal sheets.
  7. The seat and back are best made of wood. If you use your imagination and ingenuity, you can make a real masterpiece for winter fishing.

If you have a snowmobile, then you need a sled. The fact that the sled is a useful thing, many fishermen were convinced. The main thing is to decide which design is more suitable for specific fishing conditions. These can be drag sleds or classic sleds on two runners.

As mentioned above, such sleds can be made at home. By the way, if you try, you can make a snowmobile. There are a lot of interesting and unpretentious designs on the Internet that are easy to repeat at home.

Purchased sleds, as a rule, require some modifications, although not significant ones:

  • To prevent ice from accumulating on the inside of the sled, it should be treated with a silicone-based lubricant or ski wax.
  • For driving at night, reflective elements should be fixed on the sides of the sled.

Two truths are unconditionally accepted by all members of the forum and are not subject to discussion. First: let the sled barely fit in the trunk, taking up all its space. And second, the sled must not tip over on snow-covered ice. How are these two requirements related? Answer: the wider and longer the drag, the more resistant it is to overturning. You can, of course, buy the largest sliding trough and attach it to the roof of the "fish car". Then the problem of the trunk loses its relevance. Everything else, down to loops and knots, the composition of the mounting rubber and the size of the hooks on it, as well as the length of the “leash” on which the sled is pulled, is actively discussed.

DIY

On all the pages of the branch, the decision to make a sled with one's own hands is mentioned only once. This is probably the real example of amateurism - making devices for your hobby, not using anything ready-made, buying only materials in the store. The master from Zhodino bent 8 mm. plywood by steaming it in a home bath. Treated the hull with ship varnish. Put the sled on aluminum skids. All 150 kg. the fisherman's luggage entered the sleigh. And the “trough” itself fit in the trunk. Assures that the canopy slides over the hummocks like clockwork. And it also serves as a table in a tent for a modest fishing meal. We repeat, humble. A true lover will never allow himself such a state when instead of a snack they send a nozzle into his mouth.

If the local stream is small, then the main testing ground for the delivery of equipment for ice fishing is on large rivers or reservoirs. For example, in the area of Borisov, on the Berezina. Local amateurs often try new sleds there. Craftsmen do not leave the purchased ice boats the same. An amateur from Minsk attached strong loops around the entire perimeter of the finished sleigh at a distance of 10-15 cm from each other, and through them he wraps the body with rubber strips, fixing the tension with hooks. And the established ice fishing groups are advised to purchase “troughs” of the same size in order to put them one into the other, then there is much more space for equipment in the trunks.

What sled to choose and buy

Battles take place over the choice of types of sled. Some argue that firms that report some special qualities of their products, such as "the box does not retain moisture inside," are just advertising that has no practical value other than inflating prices. We are completely satisfied with the simple Belarusian sled “for 400 thousand squirrels”. Others cite long-term use of imported sleds, proving their durability. They buy "land" sleds for snowmobiles and ATVs, with their super-carrying capacity and maneuverability. Some “locomotives” pull a couple of sledges with belongings along the ice for all cases of fishing unpredictability.

Sled-sleds: is everything so simple?

You won’t understand right away - jokingly or seriously optimists - amateurs talk about a parachute on a sled as a draft force. Maybe this is quite real? Especially on large crossings and with a fair wind. And pessimists remind that such snowmobiles need a device to control the slings and a braking system. More helpful tips.

There are a large number of different designs and modifications of winter sleds for fishing. The most popular today are designs on metal skids.

They can be both solid and folding. For a very long time, fishermen gave their preference to this particular type of transportation in winter time.

But if you put both gear and equipment on the sled at the same time in snowy areas, movement will be difficult. Whereas on ice and knurled crust - they show themselves well.

That is why plastic structures, which are distinguished by convenience and practicality, have become an alternative. They have wide skis, which does not allow the structure to fail in the process of movement. Although there is a small downside. Such a device is characterized by low sides, which makes it necessary to additionally secure gear and equipment. But even with such inconvenience, their popularity does not decrease.

Anyone can create their own winter sled. You just need to pre-select the desired homemade option.

If you are interested in a quality transport mechanism for the delivery of fishing tackle in the winter, you can make wooden, plastic, aluminum or metal sleds. It all depends on the materials you have.

This kind of metal sled can be both non-separable and folding. Just a couple of decades ago, only such units existed. This mechanism has a large load capacity, its design is very rigid and powerful.

In this case, fishing tackle can be laid out on a cargo platform made of wooden boards, plastic sheets or chipboard.

The negative side of using this kind of winter sled for fishing is their poor movement in snowy areas. The skis are provided quite narrow, and with a large thickness of snow this brings inconvenience. Whereas the surface of the reservoir with a low layer of snow or just ice is ideal for the movement of this unit.

plastic sled

Plastic sleds, made in the shape of a trough, showed themselves well on fishing. They have frost-resistant characteristics, transport fishing tackle through the snow without any interference and do not cost that much. It all depends, of course, on their size and the quality of the base material used.

Although most fishermen are advised to make plastic structures for winter fishing on their own. They make sure it's easy.

wooden sled

Wooden sleds will good choice for your hike. They will be able to deliver all the gear to the right place without any difficulty and will serve you faithfully for many fishing trips.

Necessary materials and tools:

  • boards, best of all pine;
  • glue for wood;
  • sandpaper;
  • jigsaw;
  • drill and more.

Step-by-step instructions for their manufacture:

  1. Take two boards, which will later act as skids. Using a compass, draw semicircles on them, and cut them out with a jigsaw.
  2. To fix the cross bars on the runners, holes are drilled. Their connection is recommended to be carried out using round spikes by gluing.
  3. To reinforce the resulting structure, spiked transverse strips are laid in front and behind the skids.
  4. To make the design aesthetically attractive, it is necessary to cut off the excess after everything has dried.
  5. On the board, which will later act as a seat and at the place of installation of the tackle box, grooves are cut out for their further connection with the skids.
  6. Bars are also glued to the back of the skis for reinforcement.
  7. At the bottom of the rounding of the runners, a strip of aluminum or steel is screwed with screws.
  8. Before there how to proceed final assembly design, it is best to view its individual parts for the accuracy of the connection. Plus, all parts are sanded and coated with waterproof varnish.

After all the work is done, be sure to put all your fishing tackle in the sled and check the homemade product for strength. After all, I didn’t want the sled to break while fishing.

Large Sport 1630

  • they are durable, but at the same time not heavy (10.4 kg);
  • very overall (165 × 81 × 43) cm and roomy;
  • frost-resistant;
  • have high sides;
  • good for transportation on winter slippery surfaces.

That a sled for a snowmobile is a useful thing, most fishermen were convinced. But first, everyone should decide what kind of transport he likes. After all, it can be both drags and conventional structures with skids.

Most interesting options were considered earlier. Moreover, you can make a sled for a snowmobile yourself, and by the way, like the snowmobile itself, you can do it yourself. After all, this is a fairly simple design.

Tips for upgrading a store-bought ice fishing sled:

  • to inner surface the sleigh did not have icing; it is necessary to lubricate the bottom with silicone grease or special wax for skis;
  • if the trajectory will take place at night, it is recommended to attach reflective strips along the edges of the sled;
  • in addition to the sled, put also a folding chair. You can secure it with a rubber band.

Sledges for winter fishing - an irreplaceable thing. Having loaded all the equipment on them, you can comfortably get to the place of fishing, while saving energy. If you have to carry a lot of belongings with you, it’s enough to try such sleds in action once - and you won’t want to carry all the necessary fishing accessories without them. If you get to the fishing spot by snowmobile, drags that can be attached to the vehicle will also come in handy.

On sale you can find ready-made models of various designs, metal or plastic, but many make sleds for winter fishing with their own hands. If you approach it thoroughly, a self-made structure will last for many years or even decades.

Good sleds for winter fishing can be made of wood. To make them you will need:

  • self-tapping screws;

    jigsaw or electric jigsaw;

    screwdriver;

First, take two boards to make skids from them. On them, using a compass, you need to make markings, and then cut out semicircles with a jigsaw. Then you need to drill holes for the transverse boards, on which the load will be located, and fix these boards with self-tapping screws.

To make the structure stronger, you must also use self-tapping screws to mount two vertical cross bars in front and behind. The lower part of the runners must be upholstered with strips of thin metal so that they do not wear out, then the self-made sled for winter fishing will be durable. The next step is to attach lugs to the front of the skids for attaching the rope, which can be made from wire. Another option is to drill holes in the skids through which the rope will be threaded. It remains only to cover the structure with varnish or waterproof paint in several layers - and the sled is ready.

WITH do-it-yourself anchors for winter fishing aluminum

Lightweight and durable sleds can be made from aluminium. To do this, you need an aluminum sheet and an aluminum profile. Such a sled consists of three parts - runners, bottom and walls.

The first step is to cut out the bottom from the aluminum sheet, as well as the walls of the future sleigh. To make the side walls and the heel counter, you need to prepare a strip of material and then fold it twice. For this, it is best to use a bending machine. If it is not there, a metal corner and a mallet will do. It is better to immediately bend the upper edges of the walls so that it is impossible to cut yourself on them.

The next step is the manufacture of skids. It is necessary to cut two blanks of a suitable length from an aluminum profile, make cutouts on them and bend them. After that, it remains only to securely connect all the parts. To do this, you can use any fasteners, the easiest option is bolts with nuts.

Sleigh with box

Another option is to take an ordinary sled and place a box on it, in which you can place all the fishing equipment. The first step is to cut the bottom out of plywood and fix it on the sled with self-tapping screws. Then, using the same screws and corners, you need to mount the plywood side walls.

The lid is best made of durable material, then you can sit on it without fear of breakage. You can also fix foam rubber and leatherette or other suitable materials on it. They are easy to fix with a furniture stapler. So that the seat is not cold, the same foam will fit.

The lids and the wall of the box placed on the sled can be pasted over from the inside with thin foam. In this case, an insulated structure will be obtained, in which neither bait, nor lunch, nor a catch will freeze.

Sled with frame on metal skis

This version of the ice fishing sled consists of a metal frame to which skis are attached on racks. To make them, the first step is to rivet the frame. Skis can be cut from strips of duralumin or other suitable material. Their optimal width is not less than 80 mm, they must exceed the frame by 150 mm or more in length, in which case the sled will be passable and very stable.

To assemble the sled, you need to turn the frame upside down and put the skis next to it. Then, 50 mm must be retreated from the front and rear ends of the frame and marks on them for attaching the racks. The next step is to cut out racks and fastenings for them from a metal sheet, and then drill holes in the racks for attaching luggage. After that, it remains only to rivet the entire structure - and the sled is ready. On the frame you need to put a sheet of the same duralumin or plywood.

Do-it-yourself sled-drag refinement

Among those who do not want to make do-it-yourself ice fishing sleds, plastic sleds are widespread. They are affordable, light in weight, tolerate frost well and last a long time. But such sleds have a big drawback - they do not have any fastenings for fixing luggage. To make them convenient to use, this defect must be eliminated independently.

One of the best options- fasten loops of steel cable on the drags, into which it will be possible to thread the rope. To do this, drill 4 holes on each side and thread a cable through them, fixed with standard fasteners.

The best way fasten the pulling rope on the drags - fasten two eyebolts in the front part. The towing rope itself can be attached to it on carabiners, quickly putting it on or taking it off as needed.
