This article is taken from another site of mine called "The healing power of the resin." I see no reason to write about the same thing, so I publish it only by adding and reworking it a little.

Here is another small list showing what benefits the seeds of this nondescript-looking plant, which many simply consider a useless weed, bring to the body:

  • With prolonged use, the body is cleared of most toxins, toxins and nitrates
  • The body receives a powerful replenishment of nutrients, trace elements, vitamins
  • With impaired bile secretion, it returns to normal
  • Reception of milk thistle seed promotes weight loss, as metabolism is normalized
  • Seeds lower blood sugar
  • The work of the entire digestive system is normalized

In addition to direct treatment, milk thistle seeds are recommended to be taken in the following cases:

  • As a restorative after chemotherapy or radiation therapy
  • In the process of treating alcoholism and even drug addiction
  • Simultaneously with taking medications that affect the liver. This technique helps the liver to better tolerate the shock doses of chemical drugs and eliminate possible side effects that often occur when using them.
  • As restorative agents after the treatment of liver diseases

Interesting fact! On the basis of flavolignans, which are abundant in milk thistle seeds, preparations have long been created for the treatment and prevention of hepatitis and toxic liver damage. These drugs are known all over the world: in Russia it is Silibor, in Bulgaria - Karsil, in Serbia - Silibinin, in Germany - Legalon.

Chemical composition of seeds

The benefits of milk thistle seeds are obvious. More than 200 different useful substances were found in their composition.

Macronutrients Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Iron
Trace elements Copper, zinc, manganese, selenium, boron, chromium, iodine and others
Vitamins Retinol, D, tocopherol acetate, K
Essential oils, beneficial resins and esters They have a positive effect on the body, helping it to fight diseases, increase the level of platelets in the blood

Flavolignans Silybin, silicristin, silidianin

Contraindications to the use of milk thistle seeds

The huge advantage of this kind of treatment is that it has almost no contraindications. There are some restrictions, but even then, in agreement with the doctor, exceptions are possible. So, it is advisable to refrain from treatment with milk thistle seeds:

  • If the child is under 12 years old (although if you use a decoction of seeds in milk prepared according to a special recipe, then it is perfect for treating childhood diseases
  • If the patient has epilepsy, chronic pancreatitis, or cholecystitis
  • Gallstone disease (milk thistle can promote the movement of stones)
  • Individual intolerance or allergy to seeds or the plant itself

Instructions for the use of milk thistle seeds for medicinal purposes

So, it will be assumed that the seeds have already been purchased from you. What to do next and how to take them for medicinal purposes. There are several options, you can choose any of the ones you like:

  • Grind them in a coffee grinder and
  • Prepare a healing broth
  • Make alcohol tincture
  • Make a decoction in milk to treat children
  • Make meal

I'll go through each item.

Powder

Preparing milk thistle powder is perhaps the easiest option. To do this, you need to grind the seeds in a regular coffee grinder. This powder is taken in dry form. You can also prepare decoctions from it.

Very important! Ground milk thistle seeds cannot be stored for a long time, because of this, their medicinal properties are very quickly lost. Therefore, grind only the amount that you plan to use per day!

How to use:

There is a universal reception scheme. For almost all diseases, milk thistle seed powder is taken 1 teaspoon, 5 times a day, at regular intervals (4-5 hours).

In especially severe cases, such as cirrhosis, 1 gram of powder is required (the same rule applies to meal) for each kilogram of the patient's weight.

Reception scheme: the total is divided by 5 and taken every 5 hours. The course of treatment depends on the severity of the disease. This is usually 20 days. If necessary, repeat it, but with a break between courses of 3 weeks.

Milk thistle seed decoction

The broth is also prepared quite often. It is not made from whole seeds; you will also need to grind the required amount using a coffee grinder.

Recipe:

  • We take 30 grams of powder in 0.5 liters of water, put on fire and cook.
  • The broth is ready when exactly half of the water has boiled away. This is determined by eye, visually.
  • Take a decoction, in most cases 1 tablespoon, one hour after a meal.
  • The course of treatment is individual, but no more than 2 months without interruption.

Alcohol tincture

Alcohol tincture from milk thistle seed powder, prepared according to the same recipe as tincture from meal. A bottle of vodka is taken for 50 grams of powder, infused for exactly 2 weeks in a dark place. The tincture needs to be shaken daily.

Reception: using an ordinary pipette, we measure 25 drops (for an adult of average build), dilute them in a small amount of water and drink half an hour before meals, as well as in the case of the powder 5 times a day, that is, every 4-5 hours.

Broth in milk

A decoction in milk prepared according to this recipe can be used to treat liver diseases in children from 8 years of age. When preparing this broth, you do not need to grind the seeds, they are taken as a whole.

Recipe:

1 tablespoon of whole seeds is washed and poured over with 1 cup of hot, but not boiled milk and put on fire. The broth is brought to a boil, but not boiled. As soon as it boils, it is turned off and left to infuse for at least 12 hours. It is best to do this in the evening and leave it on overnight. In the morning, the milk broth is brought to a boil again and turned off. After cooling and filtering, you can start treatment.

Reception scheme:

  • Take 1/4 cup at least 4 times a day, about an hour after meals.
  • The course of treatment is according to the situation, but not more than 20 days without interruption. If required, repeat the treatment after a 2-3 week break.

Conclusion

Of all the treatment options, it is the most preferable, since neither oil nor meal is able to give such results. All nutrients are fully contained in the seeds! They are also present in oil, but in smaller volumes.

Meal is nothing more than a secondary product of processing all the same seeds. In addition, we often sell very low quality meal and it is not possible to visually determine this quality. Powder is powder.

Therefore, if you need meal, make it yourself, at home, from milk thistle seeds. Believe me, this is not as difficult as it seems at first glance. So you will get a guarantee that your product is 100% high quality, and not a powder mixed with anything.

Update: October 2018

Milk thistle, which is also called milk thistle, is a one- or two-year-old medicinal plant, a representative of the Asteraceae family and the Milk thistle genus.

Milk thistle is native to the Mediterranean countries, the Pyrenean and Balkan Peninsulas. The culture has spread widely throughout the world, grows in Africa, Eastern and Western Europe, America and Central Asia.

In the wild, it grows in weedy areas and belongs to aggressive weeds. It is actively cultivated to obtain valuable medicinal raw materials in the southern parts of Russia, Ukraine and China. The medicinal properties and contraindications of milk thistle are well known today, therefore the plant is a medicinal raw material for the pharmaceutical industry.

Morphological description

The cultivated species is an annual and the wild is a thorny biennial.

Reaches a height of up to 1.5 meters. The stem has a simple or branched structure, glabrous. Large elliptical or pinnate leaves are arranged alternately. There are yellowish spines on the edge of the leaf, and veins below. The leaf plate is green and has white spots on it. The surface of the leaf is shiny.

The flowers are pink, purple, or pure white. Collected in spherical single baskets with a wrapper, which consists of thorny leaves. The inflorescence bed has a fleshy structure and is covered with hairs. The flowers are tubular, bisexual. The fruit is a tuft achene with a bitter taste. Flowering occurs in the summer months, July-August.

Collection, procurement and storage

Milk thistle seeds are harvested from August to October. seeds ripen unevenly. The formation of a white cannon in the baskets indicates the readiness of the seeds - to obtain them, the baskets themselves are cut using the secateurs. They are laid on a sieve in one layer, under which clean paper is spread and dried in this way. It is important that the room is sufficiently ventilated, but without drafts, since the seeds are small and can simply fly away. After drying, the thorns are cut off from the baskets, break them and shake out the seeds, which are dried on paper. Store in fabric bags in the dark and dry for 3 years.

The collection of roots is carried out in the fall - they are dug up, washed with water and prepared for drying: they are crushed and dried in an oven at T up to 50 degrees, or indoors. Store their glass in jars and for 1 year.

The leaves are also harvested in the fall - they are laid on a cloth or paper in a thin layer and dried under conditions of sufficient ventilation. Store in glass jars for 1 year.

Milk thistle juice is harvested during the period when the plant throws out the arrow - the first baskets open. To obtain it, 5 of the largest leaves are removed from each stem, crushed and squeezed out. The valuable product is preserved as follows: for 1 liter of juice - 50 ml of 70% alcohol, mix and store in the cold.

Chemical composition

The roots, leaves and seeds of the plant contain about 400 substances, including:

  • Silymarin is the main nutrient that makes milk thistle so popular. It is a biologically active component (hepatoprotector), a protective and restorative effect on cell membranes, activating the growth of new cells and the synthesis of protein molecules, increasing the production of bile and neutralizing the effect of toxic substances;
  • Fatty and essential oilsparticipating in the regeneration of cells and tissues, normalization of metabolic processes and elimination of inflammation. They have an anticarcinogenic effect, normalize the function of the central nervous system, increase the motility of the gastrointestinal tract and promote wound healing;
  • Phenolic compounds lignans (silicristin, silybin, silidianin) contribute to the elimination of toxins, excess cholesterol, normalize the balance of hormones, accelerate metabolism and normalize the central nervous system;
  • Proteins are involved in the synthesis of hormones, enzymes and antibodies, as well as in the transport of hemoglobin, normalize hormone levels, and strengthen the immune system.
  • Flavonoids strengthen capillaries, normalize blood pressure and heart rate, participate in neutralizing free radicals, stimulate the function of the adrenal cortex, have an anti-inflammatory effect;
  • Alkaloids (Taxifolin) normalize blood circulation, reduce the severity of pain, excite the central nervous system (in small doses) or inhibit it (in large doses);
  • Resins have a disinfecting effect, destroy pathogenic flora, increase the protective potential of the body;
  • The mucus has an anti-inflammatory effect and accelerates wound healing;
  • Saponins enhance the secretory function of the bronchial glands, activate the synthesis of corticosteroids, regulate water and salt metabolism, relieve inflammation;
  • Organic acids activate metabolic processes, increase appetite, strengthen immunity, participate in detoxification of the body;
  • Micro and macro elements (selenium, manganese, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, iodine, zinc, boron, copper) and vitamins (groups A, D, B, F, E, K and group B) have a complex immunostimulating, anticarcinogenic, strengthening effect on the body and a normalizing effect on all metabolic processes.

Useful properties and application

All parts of the plant (seeds, leaves, roots) have medicinal value.

  • The roots and seeds are used in the preparation of decoctions used in the treatment of diseases of the stomach, liver, edema and urinary retention, convulsions and sciatica, etc.
  • Milk thistle seeds are used to prepare butter, powder and flour. These forms enhance the work of the gastrointestinal tract, are effective in diseases of the liver and spleen, prevent salt deposition and strengthen the vascular wall.

This applies to all spheres of human activity and especially health. In pursuit of him, people are trying to have time to acquire new-fashioned promising drugs, forgetting that the path to healing can sometimes be found in the simplest things - flowers, fruits, plants, herbs. An example is the wonderful herb milk thistle, which can help a person get rid of many diseases and become a miraculous elixir for maintaining health.

  • organic acids;
  • biogenic amines;
  • saponins;
  • resin.

In total, the plant has about 300 useful substances that can affect almost all organs of the human body, destroying diseases and maintaining health.

What it looks like and where it grows

Milk thistle has many names, but the most famous, which most people in Central Russia know, is thistle, and it belongs to this genus. The plant was first discovered in Mediterranean countries such as Egypt, Turkey, France, Israel. Even in antiquity, it was known in Albania, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and the Iberian Peninsula. Now the grass has "captured" the West and East European countries, Britain, South African lands, the central part of the African continent, Central Asian regions, southern regions of Russia, the Caucasus, and southern Siberia.

Milk thistle is perceived as an ubiquitous weed that quickly takes root and grows. Usually its height is about 1.5 m. The grass has a bare and straight stem with large leaves that can grow up to 80 cm, green and elliptical in shape. They grow alternately and have small thorns with a yellowish color at the edges.

In July and August, the thistle blooms with white, pink or purple flowers, collected in a kind of bowl, which is "wrapped" in thorny green leaves. The inflorescences themselves resemble a fluffy ball.

Milk thistle, although it seems a completely non-cute plant, is of great benefit. According to legend, the Mother of God herself told people about the amazing healing power of the herb.

Collection and storage

Thistle bears fruit in small baskets that remain on the stem after the flowering period ends (from mid-August to early October). This is due to the different climatic conditions of the regions where the grass grows. Not only seeds should be harvested for medicinal needs, but also leaves and roots. Each part of the plant has its own collection rules:

  1. The seeds are harvested from August to September. At this time, soft white fluff appears at the place of the inflorescence, which signals the time of fruiting. Such baskets must be carefully trimmed with scissors. Then carefully lay out on thick parchment or wire rack in a dry and ventilated room. However, it is important to avoid strong air currents. seeds can be scattered with their parachutes. After the capsules have dried enough, they need to be opened and the seeds removed from there, spreading the last to dry out already in the "released" state.
  2. The leaves of the plant are recommended to be harvested in the fall, when fruiting ends. The choice should be stopped on healthy parts that have no traces of obvious damage, tear them off the stem, rinse and dry in a single layer on paper under a canopy or indoors. You can also dry the raw materials in an oven or dryer, but the processing temperature should not exceed 40 ° C.
  3. The roots of the plant are harvested already in October, after the seeds have scattered on their parachutes. These parts of the milk thistle must be dug out without damaging their integrity, washed thoroughly and dried in the open air or in a dryer.

Despite the different terms and rules of procurement, there are general recommendations for collection:

  1. Choose plants that grow away from highways and industrial plants.
  2. Select healthy specimens with no damage and traces of the vital activity of various pests.
  3. Collect raw materials in dry weather.
  4. Dry the product thoroughly, following all recommendations.

It is best to transfer the finished dry parts to a glass container that closes tightly. But cardboard boxes or canvas storage bags are not excluded. The only exceptions are polyethylene and plastic or plastic. As for the timing, they are slightly different. So, seeds can be used for 3 years, but leaves and roots are stored for only one year.

With proper adherence to all the tips, milk thistle will definitely bring all its benefits and solve many health problems.

A nondescript weed or a unique healer? The answer to this question is worth looking for, having familiarized yourself with all the possibilities of a medicinal plant, and they, thanks to the richest composition, are really impressive. Beneficial features:

  • treatment and prevention of liver diseases;
  • restoration of damaged liver cells;
  • elimination of toxins and toxins;
  • strengthening the cardiovascular system;
  • normalization of lipid metabolism;
  • weight regulation;
  • lowering sugar levels;
  • strengthening the body's immune system;
  • obstacle to aging processes;
  • activation of bile secretion and acceleration of the process of its excretion;
  • improving the work of the gastrointestinal tract, by removing the inflammatory processes of the mucous membranes;
  • diuretic effect;
  • elimination of constipation;
  • wound healing property;
  • prevention and treatment of ulcers;
  • anti-burn therapy;
  • diarrhea treatment.

And this is only the general effect of thistle, and it also has the ability to influence the body depending on the sex and age of the patient. Therefore, for the female, male and child body, the herb has targeted benefits.

For women

Women are weak and vulnerable creatures, and therefore their body needs additional protection and prevention of various diseases. In addition to its main capabilities, milk thistle will help the fair sex to normalize the nervous system, protect the liver, including from the consequences of taking hormonal and contraceptives, get rid of certain gynecological diseases (vaginitis, erosion, etc.), lose weight , increase sex drive, protect against cancer, cleanse the skin, prolong its youth, and strengthen hair and nails. In addition, during menopause, the plant will provide prevention of osteoporosis.

All of the above properties of milk thistle make it indispensable for the restoration and maintenance of women's health.

For men

Since milk thistle is a natural and powerful hepatoprotector, and men like to relax over a glass of intoxicating drink, they are simply made for each other. The fact is that thistle perfectly protects the liver from the harmful effects of alcohol, thereby leveling the harm to health.

But that's not all! The product has a positive effect on potency, increasing it, relieves hemorrhoids, constipation, radiculitis, minimizes the effect of harmful substances on the human body. Also, the herb will help restore strength and increase endurance. So men, especially lovers of alcohol and beautiful women, should take a closer look at the thistle, and not bypass the "thorn" side!

During pregnancy

Each expectant mother, carrying her baby, takes care of his correct and safe development. Therefore, women carefully monitor everything that surrounds them, that gets into their daily diet, and also carefully study medicines that can not only benefit, but also harm the child. And here milk thistle has exactly a double effect.

The plant is able to relieve or reduce the manifestations of toxicosis, improve metabolism, eliminate constipation, normalize the nervous system, protect the liver and heart. But, unfortunately, the plant is not recommended for use in such a state, because the composition contains potent substances that can harm the developing person. This is especially dangerous in the early stages. Although sometimes in the first trimester, doctors still prescribe a thistle for admission, but at the same time they calculate all possible risks for the mother and baby. Also, the product can be used in the third trimester, but only strictly according to the indications and prescription of the doctor.

Thus, the ban on taking herbs during pregnancy is conditional, however, due to the lack of sufficient information about the effect of the plant on the fetus, doctors recommend abandoning preparations containing milk thistle in order to avoid possible irreversible consequences. In any case, before taking the product, you need to consult a specialist!

When breastfeeding

During the period of breastfeeding, women take care of the quality, fat content and quantity of breast milk, because it is on him that the health and correct formation of the baby depends. Milk thistle does help increase milk production, but its use during the lactation period is contraindicated. This is due to the fact that a small organism has just begun its final formation, and therefore the effect of the herb can affect it negatively. At the same time, the degree of risk has not been reliably studied, and the consequences may not be predictable.

In this regard, young mothers need to consult with a specialist and only then start taking the drug. If one is appointed, it is necessary to strictly observe the recommended dose in order to avoid possible risks of health complications of a small, still fragile child's body.

For children

The younger generation needs more protection than the adult population of the planet. Milk thistle will help children strengthen immunity, normalize metabolism, improve bowel function, regulate the nervous system, protect the liver, cope with skin problems, get rid of constipation, restore flora, help with pigmentation disorders.

However, taking the drug is indicated after the child reaches 12 years of age. Usually, experts prescribe it in a capsule version twice a day. They also give a decoction or meal. The latter can be consumed from the age of 3 to 0.5 tsp. twice a day. The broth is drunk with milk from the same age as the meal. But at the same time, the treatment must be necessarily agreed with the doctor, who will accurately establish both the dose of the drug and the need for its use. Self-administration of milk thistle can lead to negative consequences, because the growing organism continues the process of its formation, therefore the effect of the plant is unpredictable.

When losing weight

Most women and men who seek to acquire the figure of their dreams by losing weight run the risk of harming the body, lacking important nutrients, and also disrupting the balance of functions in the body. Reception of thistle has a positive effect during the period of weight loss:

  1. The calorie content of the product is 335 kcal per 100 g of powder, which makes the plant a dietary and healthy product.
  2. The elimination of toxins and toxins helps to start the process of weight loss.
  3. The herb maintains the condition of the skin, which can become flabby during the diet.
  4. Cleansing the liver with milk thistle prevents fat deposition.
  5. Eating the plant helps to normalize hormones, thereby eliminating a possible cause of excess weight.
  6. The laxative effect also accompanies the cleansing and the fight against extra pounds.
  7. The normalization of metabolism also leads to the achievement of ideal body parameters.

All these amazing properties of milk thistle help those who lose weight achieve positive results much faster, without harming their health, but only supporting and protecting it in a natural way.

Why is milk thistle honey useful?

Milk thistle not only has beneficial properties and acts as a weed, but is also an excellent honey plant. Unfortunately, honey from it is a rather rare product; nevertheless, it is unique and useful, like the plant itself.

Milk thistle honey is transparent. It can be yellow-white, gold or dark amber. Its aroma is tart and floral, but not very obvious. The taste may not be very sweet or sugary, but in both cases it is tender and soft. Within 2 months, the sweetness thickens, acquiring a cream or pale yellow color. You can't eat a lot of it, but adding it to tea or cottage cheese, you can feel the whole magnificent gamut of taste.

Thistle honey has a very wide list of beneficial substances, which include:

  • vitamins of group B, A, K, C;
  • tocopherols;
  • potassium;
  • sodium;
  • manganese;
  • selenium;
  • copper;
  • phosphorus;
  • flavonolignans;
  • flavonoids;
  • tannins;
  • resin;
  • antioxidants;
  • organic and inorganic acids;
  • tyramine;
  • histamine.

The calorie content of the delicacy is considered lower than that of the usual varieties, and is only 300 kcal.

The peculiarity of such a product is precisely in its composition, with which other varieties cannot compete. It is this difference and other nutrients that have endowed honey with the following properties:

  • strengthening of immunity;
  • improved metabolism;
  • restoration of intestinal microflora;
  • elimination of inflammatory processes;
  • elimination and reduction of pain syndromes;
  • normalization of the nervous system;
  • wound healing property;
  • treatment of purulent inflammation;
  • improvement, restoration and treatment of the liver, as well as the regeneration of organ cells;
