Transition from analogue television broadcasting to accepted quality federal standard within the territory of Russian Federation digital DVB-T2 has influenced more than just the computer TV tuner industry. The park of TVs either without support for digital broadcasting, or with support for the first version of DVB-T turned out to be more than impressive, while many models simply did not have time to become obsolete in terms of diagonals and resolutions. A solution was found quickly enough, they became standalone TV tuners (in the future we will use the well-established term "receivers"), connected to TVs, usually via HDMI or a composite interface, less often supporting SCART (optionally with RGB), while the retail price of such devices allows them to be considered available even in modern conditions domestic market.

The company was one of the first manufacturers to present such solutions, one of which with the heavyweight name BBK SMP137HDT2, based on the current chipset, we will consider further in the text.

Contents of delivery

The compact box has the traditional BBK blue and white color range, explanatory labels are localized.

In addition to the receiver itself, the kit includes:

  • remote control;
  • composite cable 3 RCA - 3 RCA for analog connection video and audio signal;
  • user guide.

Design and specifications

The manufacturer claims the following features of the BBK SMP137HDT2:

  • uSB 2.0 port for connecting external USB-compatible devices;
  • support for MKV (Matroska) and TS containers;
  • dolby Digital support.

The device is available in two colors - black (Black) and dark gray (Dark Gray), the second version was tested. BBK SMP137HDT2 is a compact (device dimensions 174 × 158 × 42 mm, weight 370 g) parallelepiped with rounded corners. On the front panel, in addition to the name and several logos, there is a two-color (red in standby mode, green during operation) LED indicator and a USB port.

The rear panel houses an IEC antenna connector, an HDMI connector and three RCA connectors for composite video and stereo audio.

The receiver has a built-in power supply, the cable cannot be disconnected.

On the bottom you can see ventilation holes and 4 legs, 2 plastic and 2 rubber.

The sticker informs about the version number 2.0.

Alas, the retail origin of the test sample did not allow photographing the printed circuit board, so we will limit ourselves to listing the microcircuits used.

The BBK SMP137HDT2 is based on the ALi M3821 single-chip system (system-on-a-chip, SoC), introduced in summer 2014. According to the manufacturer, the combination of the M3821 with the company's MxL603 RF unit provides a high level of protection against interference caused by 4G / LTE, Wi-Fi and FM signals. This bundle is complemented by a 64 MB DDR3-800 memory module.

The receiver was tested with a Samsung LE40B530P7W TV using an AVerMedia Live Gamer HD card for capture.

Remote control

BBK SMP137HDT2 comes with a 43-button remote control labeled RC-SMP712.

The remote is quite comfortable in the hand, but the size of many buttons could be increased, and the response could be made more informative.

List of terrestrial channels during testing

Digital broadcasting in Samara is carried out at a frequency of 522 MHz with M-PLP technology (Multiple Physical Layer Pipes - several physical layer channels), allowing different schemes modulations and different levels of error resilience for different streams in a multiplexed DVB-T2 signal.

Connection

Connecting devices of this class is extremely simple, except for the antenna in the case of a TV with an HDMI input, an appropriate cable is sufficient, however, due to the lack of one in the delivery set, a potential user is better off looking for a cable in advance.

Composite video output and analog audio outputs work simultaneously with HDMI, video modes with 24, 25 and 50 frames per second in the settings correspond to the PAL standard, with 30 and 60 frames per second - to the NTSC standard.

Customization

The BBK SMP137HDT2 user interface has its own name InErgo.

As it turned out, such a pretentious name hides the usual hierarchical menu of basic settings.

The subsection "Menu language" of the system settings section contains not only the setting of the same name, but also the teletext setting and the choice of priorities if there are several audio tracks in the stream.

There are two subsections in the image settings: "Video output", in which the resolution and frequency are selected (1080i_25, 1080i_30, 1080p_50, 1080p_60, 1080p_25, 1080p_30, 1080p_24, "original", "on TV info", 480i, 480p, 576i, 576p, 720p_50, 720p_60, defaults to 1080i_25), and Aspect Ratio (Auto, 4: 3 PanScan, 4: 3 Letterbox, 16: 9 Normal).

The Auto mode failed to determine the aspect ratio under test conditions, and the best results, oddly enough, were demonstrated by the 4: 3 Letterbox mode.

In the digital audio output settings, you can select LPCM or BS Out, the receiver supports bitstream when connected via HDMI, which allows you to use the device as a media player with an external decoder.

The BBK SMP137HDT2 does not have an external display for displaying the time, but the correct setting may be required to use the scheduler. The DVB-T2 standard supports the transmission of time, but the user can select the region, time zone or manual setting when the GMT setting is disabled.

The screen settings allow you to adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, hue and clarity.

Parental control is supported (you can set the minimum age of 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 years, the restriction also applies to recorded programs), there is a firmware update point via USB (at the time of testing, no updates were found on the manufacturer's website), information about the firmware our instance is presented below.

The Other subsection includes settings for additional antenna power, channel display and automatic standby.

BBK SMP137HDT2 interface provides ample opportunities for channel tuning.

In addition to automatic search in the OIRT frequency grid (178 - 226 MHz, channels 6 - 12 and 470 - 860 MHz, channels 21 - 69), per-channel search with a range selection and a frequency search with manual input and bandwidth selection are available (6, 7 and 8 MHz).

Signal level and quality values \u200b\u200bin percent are displayed immediately after entering the frequency.

Auto search allows you to skip scrambled channels if available.

Channels can be sorted by Unique Assigned Numbers (LCN) and Service ID in the order they are transmitted in the stream. In addition, sorting can be disabled.

The list of channels can be edited (contextual operations are carried out with colored buttons on the remote control), sorting by name in forward and reverse order, displaying open / encrypted, blocking,

renaming

and moving in the list.

BBK SMP137HDT2 supports Electronic Program Guide (EPG).

The timer for 8 positions, the transition to the setting of which can be carried out from the EPG window, supports both recording and viewing, during testing the device was taken out of standby mode and went into standby mode after the completion of an active task without any complaints.

Teletext is processed correctly.

A USB storage device is required to record broadcasts and to work with Timeshift. The manufacturer recommends a volume of 4 to 500 GB and the FAT32 file system, however, the use of a 750 GB HDD with NTFS during testing did not affect the operation in these modes.

A folder ALIDVRS2 is created on the connected drive, for each recorded fragment, its own folder with the date in the title is created, the recording is carried out in TS format, and two service files with * .dvr extensions are created.

During direct recording (Record button on the remote control), pressing the button again allows you to set the recording time. The end of the recording with the stop button requires confirmation, which excludes accidental interruption; when the deferred viewing mode is active, the recording is made from the moment it is turned on.

Recorded fragments can be renamed, password-locked and deleted.

The built-in media player is capable of displaying recorded files, video files, sound files and image files.

AVI / *. Avi, MKV / *. Mkv, MPG / *. Mpg, * .ts, * .m2ts, MP3 / *. Mp3, Vorbis OGG / *. Ogg files, H.264 MP and HP @ L4 video codecs are supported .1, MPEG-1,2,4 SP ASP @ L5, audio codecs MP2, MP3 (up to 320 kbps), AC3, ADPCM, AAC, HEAAC, OGG (up to 192 kbps). The maximum resolution and bit rate are 1920 × 1080 and 20 Mbps, respectively. Despite the lack of support for FLAC in the official specifications, such files are also playable.

Support for Dolby Digital and bitstream increases the functionality of the device as a media player; during testing, the receiver coped with all the files within the stated specifications.

Devices of this class do not have absolutely correct support for the playback of 24p video materials (23.976 and 24 frames / s), however, the negative effect can be minimized to a comfortable level by selecting the video mode.

Quality

The image quality when working with DVB-T and DVB-T2 is determined by the operator in the range from low resolutions with a low bit rate to HDTV. DVB-T2 channels are currently only available in standard definition.

The time from turning on the device until the image appears is about 15 seconds.

The receiver provides good reception of digital channels, switching between channels takes about 2 seconds, between channels in different PLPs - about 3 seconds.

BBK SMP137HDT2 is typical representative modern DVB-T / DVB-T2 receivers and released by a well-known brand. The device does not stand out in anything special, but it copes with the performance of its functions, has no significant drawbacks, and its availability in retail, the manufacturer's reputation and the availability of authorized services can tip the scales in favor of this model.

To watch digital broadcasting channels on an analog TV, you need special equipment called a receiver, tuner or set-top box. BBK Electronics has succeeded in digital equipment. The market offers BBK set-top boxes of decent quality and functionality. BBK receivers not only accept signals of the DVBT2 standard, but can also record selected programs into memory for later viewing.

The main feature of a digital set-top box is that there is no need, as for satellite TV, to worry about installing a bulky antenna or laying a cable. For this device to work, it is enough small indoor antenna and connecting the BBK set-top box to the TV.

While the number of available channels is significantly less, it is limited to 20 terrestrial TV channels versus a couple of hundred channels for other solutions. But digital TV broadcasting with the introduction of new multiplex equipment will eventually expand their number, HD and even 3D TV channels will appear.

BBK digital tuners match satellite receivers in functional terms:

  • high image quality;
  • the ability to record the planning of the inclusion of programs;
  • pause and rewind.

User reviews of brand models in to a greater extent positive. The most commonly noted is a friendly, intuitive interface.Users are satisfied with fast channel switching, the TV Guide (EPG), thanks to which skips of your favorite programs are excluded. The ability of the device to save videos and photos to small USB drives is noted, the quality playback in FullHD format.

Connecting and configuring a BBK TV box

The method of connecting the device to the TV depends on the availability of the corresponding connectors on the TV receiver. An old TV can be connected using tulip cables via the component output of the set-top box (AV, CVBS). A more modern TV receiver with an HDMI connector is logical to connect via hDMI cable through the corresponding port of the set-top box. If your TV does not have the above connectors, but there is a SCART port (in the form of a comb), you will need to purchase an adapter. The plug from the indoor or outdoor antenna must be inserted into the antenna socket of the set-top box.

Rf out port on TV box can be used to transport analog signals to the TV. To set up the BBK prefix, you need to do the following.

  1. Make sure the set-top box is connected to the TV correctly.
  2. Connect the digital receiver to the power supply and turn on the BBK set-top box without a remote control (on the body there is a power button) or by means of a remote control (if there is no power button on the body).
  3. When you turn on the receiver software for the first time, it will display a welcome window, offering to select the interface language, broadcasting region, and determine the screen parameters.
  4. Then, to initiate the channel search, press the "OK" button.
  5. When the search is finished, the found channels are automatically saved.

If you need to reconfigure the device, you can get to the initial settings window after restoring the factory settings. The path to the mode "Main menu" → "Settings" → "Factory settings".

In more detail, the procedure for the initial setup / reconfiguration of the digital tuner is described in the instructions for each specific model.

Ways to solve connection problems

During operation of digital electronics, malfunctions can occur. If the tuner does not respond to the remote control, the first thing to try is to replace the batteries. If it does not help, the remote control may be defective and will need to be replaced.

Crashes happen when the set-top box does not catch channels... You can try the following solutions to the problem.

  1. Restart the device (turn off the power and turn it back on using the power button on the device itself).
  2. Start automatic channel search. The method is fraught with resetting the manually sorted channels. But arranging the channels in the right order is not difficult after solving the problem.
  3. If the first two options do not give the desired result, you can restore the factory settings and reconfigure the device from scratch. The sequence of pressing the buttons must be seen in the manual for a specific model of the console.

Advice! Before proceeding with the above steps, you should make sure that the receiver is not actually finding channels due to a software malfunction, and not due to a problem with the local repeater.
