Once Grigory honestly admitted to Natalya that he did not love her. Only the children many years later served as the bridge that connected him with Natalia. Even if he never loved her like Aksinya, he never appreciated her devotion as Aksinya's, but she was the mother of his children, he lived with her for many years. Unwittingly, people who have lived side by side for many years become family. The death of Natalya could not break Grigory, like the death of Aksinya, but it was the death of a close, very close person. Maybe Grigory himself did not expect that he would experience the departure of Natalia so hard. And he never fully realized how attached he was to Natalya. He never felt that the steady light of her love had warmed him for many years.

He loved these two women. One - as a lover, the other - as the mother of her children. Although, if you look from the other side, after all, Aksinya gave birth to a girl for him, and Natalya was his lover. Apparently, each of them individually could not give Gregory what a man expects from a woman. Together they made his life full, full-blooded. The fate of Gregory is inseparable from these two tragic destinies dedicated to him.
