How to make your own Christmas wreath?

Decorating your home for the New Year holidays is becoming a popular tradition. Included in this preparation is the expectation of miracles and magic. One of the main symbols of Christmas and New Year is New Year's wreaths. You can purchase a ready-made attribute in a specialized store. But you can make a wreath with your own hands, involving children and older children in the manufacturing process and joint creativity.

The history of the Advent wreath tradition

Decorating an apartment or house with a Christmas wreath is a tradition borrowed from Western countries. The wreath of fir branches is complemented by 4 candles. According to Catholic custom, the candles are lit one at a time on each Sunday of Advent, the fast that lasts 24 days before Christmas.

Lutheran theologian Johann Hinrich Wichern from Hamburg took in children from poor families. During Lent they asked when Christmas would finally come. To make it easy for children to count the days until the holiday, Johann made a wreath in 1839, the base of which was an old wheel, and the decorations were 24 small red candles and 4 large white candles. The morning of each day began with him lighting one red candle in a wreath, and on Sunday also one white one. Over time, only 4 large candles remained from the original version, one for each Sunday of Advent. True, in the Catholic tradition they are colored: one pink and three purple.

The symbolism of lighting candles signifies growing anticipation for Christmas. The round shape of the wreath symbolizes the globe or eternal life, and 4 candles represent the 4 cardinal directions, the universe. The green color of pine needles is the embodiment of life.

The main thing in a wreath is its base. The base is created from any object suitable in shape. You can use natural materials: straw, twigs, vines or the rim of a wooden wheel. You can also use wire, wires, a hose, thick cardboard, bundles of newspapers, rolled fabric, etc.

  1. While walking in the yard, trim a couple of spruce branches.
  2. Prepare a round base shape and dark green wire in advance.
  3. Attach a couple of branches to the base in the shape of a wreath and wrap them with wire around the base.
  4. Repeat step 3 until the entire form is covered with pine greenery.
  5. Carefully trim the bases of the branches so that they are invisible.
  6. Show freedom and imagination in the process by adding decorations to the wreath. You can secure your Christmas tree decoration using a small piece of wire at the top of the wreath.
  7. Hang a wreath on your front door and look forward to the New Year!

Don't forget about the color that will create a special mood. Silver and blue shades match the winter mood. In this option, blue spruce branches dusted with artificial snow will look great. The combination of green branches and gold decorations looks elegant. Bright red berry accents are a win-win. Try combining different textures and shades to liven up the composition. An electric garland woven into a wreath will create a special atmosphere of magic for you and your guests. This will look especially impressive in outdoor decor: on the front door, gate or gazebo.

When making a wreath with your own hands, do not use a large number of elements. Do not weigh down the side parts; place massive decorations on top or bottom. Before gluing the decorations to the wreath, first put together all the elements of the composition and evaluate the result, then proceed to the final stage.

The site “KnowKak.ru” has prepared for its readers a detailed master class on how to make a New Year’s wreath from polyethylene and ordinary light bulbs. This decoration will be an original addition to holiday decor and the cheapest.

You will additionally need the following materials:

  • cardboard base,
  • bubble wrap,
  • glue gun,
  • scissors,
  • spray paint,
  • dry twigs,
  • metal covers.

Step 1. Prepare a ring-shaped wreath blank. It can be anything, but with a flat and durable base. Thick cardboard is suitable for it.

Step 2. Choose the color of polyethylene depending on the overall New Year's decoration. In this master class it will be white. Flatten the bag on your work surface and cut it into rectangles. Choose their size according to the desired “fluffiness” of the wreath. That is, the greater the width of the figure, the longer the decor will become.

Step 3. Mark a center on each rectangle. Make a knot in this place and tighten it well.

Tie all polyethylene blanks in a similar manner.

Step 4. Warm up the heat gun and glue the prepared decor to the base. This must be done at the site of the nodules. Start attaching bows to the inside of the circle.

Try to place the figures as close to each other as possible so that there are no gaps between them.

Glue the entire inner edge of the cardboard in this way.

Then move to the outer part of the circle.

And only then fill the middle of the base with blanks.

Step 5. Christmas balls can be made from light bulbs that have already burned out.

Spray paint is the fastest way to apply different colors to the glass surface. Use the same shade, but with different textures. To prevent the paint from smudging, place the light bulbs on the box to dry. Or paint them straight away in this position.

Step 6. Glue the glass decor onto the wreath base. Carefully pull apart the polyethylene, apply glue and press the light bulb base to the cardboard.

Then return the pieces from the bag to their original position. This way the oblong part of the light bulbs will not be visible.

Step 7 Bend the edges of the metal lids in different directions using pliers.

Step 8 Prepare dry twigs. Glue the curved lids to them.

Step 9 Paint them with the same paint you used for the light bulbs.

Step 10 When the branches are dry, secure them to the wreath.

Step 11 Add pieces of bubble wrap to the plastic. Cut it into small triangles and glue it to the cardboard.

Every morning one small candle was lit in the wreath, and on Sundays a large one was added to them.

The symbolism of Christmas wreaths has several main meanings. At first, the addition of fire and light in the wreaths symbolized the growing anticipation of the birth of Jesus Christ - the light of the world. To everything was added the interpretation of the round shape, the symbolism of the wreath, determined by the spruce greenery, the colors of candles and decorative ribbons acquired additional meaning. Thus, Christmas wreaths and four candles began to be associated with the meaning of the globe and the four cardinal directions. The circle is considered to be a symbol of eternal life, which Sunday gives, the green color is the embodiment of life itself, and candles are the light that illuminates the world on Christmas days. In Christmas traditions, wreaths are usually decorated with three purple candles and one pink candle, which corresponds to the liturgical colors of worship during the Advent period. The second layer is woven in the opposite direction, which will help give the product volume.
